Redactioneel Tijd. We hebben er vaak te weinig van, of het gaat te snel voorbij. Voor historici is tijd een centraal begrip en daarom kon het natuurlijk niet uitblijven dat er eens een nummer van CODEX aan dit thema gewijd zou worden.

Voor de gelegenheid zijn we eens in onze eigen archieven gedoken. Wat heeft de tijd voor ons eigen tijdschrift gedaan? Toen bleek dat de tijd ook bij ons zijn sporen heeft achtergelaten. We hebben een koerswijziging, inclusief een nieuwe naam, ondergaan. Maar het verstrijken van de tijd bleek soms ook lastig te zijn geweest. Zo was het onduidelijk aan welke jaargang we op dit moment eigenlijk werken.

Onze redacteur Daan heeft ons archief aan een onderzoek onderworpen en ontdekte dat we dit jaar een feestje te vieren hebben! Meer over zijn bevindingen lees je op pagina 6.

Recent bleek de tijd ook een ander deel van de Geesteswetenschappen parten te hebben gespeeld.

De VU stopt met het aanbieden van de bachelor Nederlands. Als VU-alumna Nederlands brak dat mijn hart. Te weinig studenten. Te weinig jonge mensen die zich verder willen verdiepen in de cultuur van ons kleine kikkerlandje. Het mooiste vak van de wereld is niet meer aantrekkelijk. Hoe dat komt is in historisch perspectief dan weer interessant. Deze ontwikkeling is opnieuw een signaal dat we in de Geesteswetenschappen van ons moeten laten horen.

Time.We often have too little of it, or it passes too quickly. For historians, time is a vital aspect of existence, so naturally there would come a time that we published an issue on this theme.

To mark the occassion, we dove into our own archives. What did the passage of time have in store for our magazine? It turned out time also left its mark on us. We changed our course and our name. But the passing of time also proved to be difficult sometimes. For example, it turned out to be unclear which volume we are actually working on. Our editor Daan dug into our archives and found out we have a celebration this year! Read more about his findings on page 6.

Recently, time has also proven fatal in another part of the faculty of Humanities. The VU will no longer offer the Dutch literature bachelor programme. As a VU-alumna from this bachelor, this news broke my heart. Not enough students. Not enough young people interested in our tiny country’s culture. The beautiful Dutch language is no longer appealing. This development is definitely another signal to students and teachers of the Humanities must let themselves be heard.

Actualiteiten Futures Past & Present Huis Marseille, Museum voor Fotografie, toont tot juni van dit jaar het werk van de fotografen Céline van Balen, Julie Greve, Esther Kroon en Helga Paris. Deze vrouwen verwierven bekendheid in de jaren 90 van de vorige eeuw. Hun werk verbeeldt de tijdgeest aan de hand van krachtige portretten. Zo legde Paris het leven in de Duitse Democratische Republiek vast en fotografeerde ze veel later kinderen die in het nieuwe, verenigde Duitsland opgroeiden.

Canon van de Geschiedenis In 2007 presenteerde de commissie Ontwikkeling Nederlandse Canon een canon van Nederland. Deze canon geeft in 50 vensters de hoogtepunten van de Nederlandse geschiedenis weer, beginnend bij de hunebedden en eindigend bij de rol van Nederland binnen Europa. Vorig jaar kwam de bestaande canon in opspraak. De canon zou te weinig diversiteit laten zien. Behalve een discussie over de inhoud, werd ook de vraag gesteld wie zich mag bemoeien met het indelen van de tijd in belangrijke en minder belangrijke gebeurtenissen.

Op de VU Het onderzoek aan de Faculteit der Geesteswetenschappen staat niet stil. In elk nieuw nummer van CODEX vind je een overzicht van recent gepromoveerden aan deze faculteit van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

40 jaar CODEX..

Historiae De eerste 10 jaar

CODEX Historiae gaat met dit nummer haar veertigste jaargang in. Om dat te vieren heb ik besloten voor ieder van de vier nummers die dit jaar uit zullen komen een terugblik op één decennium van Codex te schrijven. Dit keer aan de beurt zijn de eerste tien jaargangen: van 1980 tot 1989.

Codex Historiae, of Galapas, zoals het tot kort heette, werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in november 1980. Het ‘subfakulteitsblad geschiedenis’, naar de nieuwe spelling van de jaren ‘70. Bijna alle nummers van Galapas zijn vrij uit te lenen van de universiteitsbibliotheek (UB) van de VU. Van het eerste decennium is de collectie in de bibliotheek helaas behoorlijk fragmentarisch. Zo zit er een gigantisch gat tussen 1981 en 1986, waarvan geen enkel exemplaar beschikbaar is. Ook ontbreken er exemplaren uit de andere jaren. Er is maar een Galapas uit het jaar ’87 en een uit het jaar ‘88. Dit komt waarschijnlijk omdat de redactie niet consequent was met het aanleveren van exemplaren (zulke dingen komen nu ook af en toe voor). Deze exemplaren bestonden wel zeker weten. Elk nummer van Galapas geeft aan dat er een volgend nummer zou worden gedrukt, al zijn die niet in de bibliotheek beschikbaar. De catalogus van de bibliotheek geeft ook aan dat er ontbrekende nummers waren.

De eerste vraag die in mij opkwamen toen ik dit onderzoek wilde gaan verrichten, is waarom Galapas überhaupt bestond Wat was de directe aanleiding voor het maken van een geschiedenisblad? Het bekijken van het eerste nummer van Galapas leidt echter tot meer vragen dan antwoorden.

Galapas had namelijk een voorganger: het blad Merlijn. Toen die niet langer werd uitgegeven bestond ongeveer een jaar het blad Annales Schandales. Waarom het geschiedenisblad van de naam Merlijn af wilde, “zal ik niet meer hoeven uit te leggen”, aldus redacteur Pauline Hagemeijer, die toelicht waar de naam Galapas vandaan komt.1 Een passage met weinig uitleg. De naam Annales Schandales “deed [de redactie] te veel denken aan de naam van een schoolkrantje.”

Waar komt de naam Galapas vandaan? Wel wordt verteld dat Galapas uit het historische fantasieboek The Crystal Cave van Mary Stewart komt. In dat boek is Galapas een reus en de geheimzinnige leraar van tovenaar Merlijn.2

Studievereniging Merlijn werkte in de jaren ‘70 nauw samen met de CPN. Opheldering over de naam kreeg ik wel van de eerste Galapas, maar uitleg waarom Galapas bestond en waarom het van de naam Merlijn afging, bleef onduidelijk. Ik besloot contact op te nemen met Jaap Jan Flinterman, bekend onder de geschiedenisstudenten als de docent die de eerstejaars oudheidvakken geeft. Hij was namelijk in de jaren ‘80 een tijd student geschiedenis aan de VU en wellicht wist hij wat meer.

Jaap Jan had zelf de vorming van Galapas niet meegemaakt, maar hij wees mij erop dat dit wellicht samenhing met de vorming van studievereniging Archimedes. Veel van die studievereniging wist ik niet af – alleen dat het een politiek neutrale studievereniging was die ontstond als reactie op het sterk linkse karakter van de vereniging Merlijn destijds.Toen Merlijn minder radicaal werd, ging Archimedes weer op in die vereniging. Na even de bescheiden stapel tijdschriften van Galapas op mijn tafel door te spitten vond ik een artikel getiteld Archimedes: de geschiedenis van een tegenbeweging in

Tussen 1981 en 1986 zijn er geen edities van Galapas in de UB. Dit is het eerste nummer na 1981 in de collectie. het tweede nummer van 1986. In het artikel van 9 bladzijden wordt een gedetailleerd verhaal gedaan over het ontstaan, de bloei en het verval van Archimedes.3 In de jaren ‘70 ging Merlijn nauw samenwerken met de overwegend linkse universitaire studentenvakbond SRVU (die destijds veel meer invloed en belang had dan nu) en de Communistische Partij Nederland (CPN). Dat maakte een aantal studenten ongemakkelijk en dus besloten zij een tegenvereniging op te richten: Archimedes. Dit gebeurde in 1979, een jaar voor het eerste nummer van Galapas.4 Het is dus aannemelijk dat het loskoppelen van het geschiedenisblad en de vereniging Merlijn samenhang had met de oprichting van Archimedes. In plaats van twee verenigingsbladen werd er dus gekozen voor een blad voor de afdeling, die voortaan ook financiering zou krijgen van de faculteit, in plaats van de vereniging Merlijn.5 Ook de keuze voor de naam Galapas is een stuk logischer, wanneer je bedenkt dat Archimedes de uil van Merlijn is (het eerste dat hij deed in het boek Arthur, koning voor eens en altijd was op het hoofd van de tovenaar zijn behoefte doen)6 – een duidelijk Merlijn-thema op de geschiedenisafdeling van de VU.

Aanvankelijk had Galapas nog geen logo.

Wij hebben ons nu lang genoeg verdiept in de ontstaansgeschiedenis van Galapas. Ik wil graag een kort overzicht geven van de dingen die ik heb opgemerkt van de bescheiden collectie edities die zijn overgeleverd van de jaren ’80. Vermoedelijk is de Galapas ongeveer vier maal per jaar uitgekomen. Het was tegen het eind van het decennium niet gebruikelijk om aan te geven welk nummer van de jaargang een bepaald exemplaar was. Gelukkig geeft de catalogus van de UB wel aan uit welke jaargangen deze nummers kwamen. Ik weet dus dat ik twee exemplaren van jaargang 1 heb, drie van 7, een van 8, twee van 9 en twee van 10. Pas in 1989 is er sprake van een volledige collectie. Kort gezegd, ik heb ongeveer één kwart van de uitgebrachte Galapassen mogen inzien.

Toen Galapas voor het eerst uitkwam was er geen sprake van een logo. Het voorblad werd gedrukt op gekleurd papier met een foto van de Gedächtniskirche in Berlijn, wat gerelateerd was aan het uitvoerig verslag van de studiereis van Merlijn naar Oost-Berlijn in 1980. Het verslag van de studiereis is niet het enige spoor van de studievereniging in Galapas. Wat opvalt uit het colofon is dat de redactie expliciet bestaat uit leden van Merlijn, Archimedes, het vrouwenoverleg (een feministische studentenorganisatie met als doel het behartigen van de belangen van vrouwelijk

personeel en studentes) of de staf, naast een paar vrije zetels. Het eerste nummer bevat ook een verslag over het introweekend van Merlijn en een uitvoerige kennismaking met het bestuur van de vereniging, compleet met de plannen voor het jaar en wie in welke commissie zit. De aanwezigheid van Merlijn in Galapas is sinds dit nummer langzaam afgenomen. Merlijn gebruikte Galapas vooral als platform om geschiedenisstudenten te informeren over activiteiten, zoals symposia en buitenlandse reizen.Wanneer zoiets niet te melden was, was er ook weinig van Merlijn te horen.

Galapas wisselde af en toe van drukker, zonder een aangegeven reden.

Aanvankelijk was Galapas ook een stuk meer betrokken bij het studentenleven, de politiek en de VU dan Codex nu is. De meeste artikelen gingen over actualiteiten, zoals hoe men zich kon aansluiten bij de protestacties rondom het invoeren van de tweefasenwet7 – de voorganger van de bachelor-/ masterstructuur die wij nu nog kennen. Opmerkelijk is ook het gebruik van de Nieuwe Stijl Nederlands, waarbij men woorden schreef zoals ze werden uitgesproken. Zo wordt Mozambique in een driedelig reisverslag, waarvan wij helaas alleen het eerste deel hebben, beschreven als een “tropies land” met een “burokraties overheidsapparaat”.8In een ander artikel over de gevolgen van de tweefasenwet wordt gesproken over “selektiekriteria”. 9 Ook heeft er ooit een “lezingsieklus” plaatsgevonden over de “geschiedenis en sosjale wetenschappen”.10 Zo werd ook de moeite genomen om genderbewust te spreken: men sprak over “studenten/s”, de “historikus/ka”11 en een enkele keer over “sprekers” met “sters” in de kantlijn met de hand bijgeschreven.12

Na het gat van vijf jaar in de UB-collectie zien we een gloednieuw logo, en merken we dat Galapas langzamerhand van een actualiteitenblad naar een geschiedenisblad is omgevormd. Zo zijn in het eerste nummer uit 1986 (jaargang 7) vier stukken gebaseerd op het onderzoek van studenten die het vak Diachronisch Thema volgden over gender en ideologie in de geschiedenis. Alsnog blijft de focus in dit decennium vooral op actualiteiten in de geschiedenis, zoals nieuwe theorieën en zelfs een serie reviews over populairhistorische bladen. Opmerkelijk, want in de laatste paar jaar gingen de artikelen in Codex vooral over historische verhalen en curiositeiten.

Af en toe werd er van drukker gewisseld. Galapas begon bij de drukker Julian Orton en ging bij het tweede nummer van ’86 over naar SRVU-off-set. In 1987 is Galapas weer teruggegaan naar Julian, maar vanaf ’88 zaten ze weer bij SRVU-off-set. Het grootste verschil tussen de drukkers is hoe de editie is samengevoegd. SRVU-off-set drukte net als onze huidige drukker vier bladzijdes op A3-formaat en vouwde hem dubbel met nietjes in de rug. Julian drukte alles op A4-formaat en niette het samen in een boekje. Met de methode van Julian scheuren er helaas gemakkelijker pagina’s weg, hetgeen gebeurd is met het allereerste nummer. Ergens in de laatste 40 jaar is daar de achterpagina van verdwenen. Van de nummers die ik kan bekijken wordt de drukker alleen een keer genoemd in het stuk aan de lezers (het hedendaagse ‘redactioneel’),– het moment dat Galapas voor het eerst het blad bij SRVU-offset liet drukken. Hun redenering was dat ze hoopten op

Het logo dat voornamelijk werd gebruikt in de jaren ’80. hogere drukkwaliteit voor hun afbeeldingen.13 De kwaliteit van het blad lijkt inderdaad verbeterd. SRVU-off-set kon afbeeldingen met minder contrast (dus meer gradaties in de grijstinten) printen.

Ik zou gemakkelijk nog vijf pagina’s over deze eerste tien jaren van Galapas kunnen schrijven, zoals over het sporadisch voorkomen van de eerste artikelen in het Engels vanaf 1986, of het bijna compleet gebrek aan bronvermelding, met een paar uitzonderingen. Of de terugkerende columns van de redactie of interviews met de staf. Maar ik wil deze Codex niet helemaal volschrijven met een geschiedenis over zichzelf, dus knoop ik er een eind aan. In 1989, een jaar waarin de exemplaren opmerkelijk dun begonnen te worden, verschenen er twee artikelen over Galapas zelf.

Redactieleden Günter Schaapveld en Annemarie Gehrels signaleerden crisissen: een identiteitscrisis wel te verstaan Waarom heet het tijdschrift eigenlijk Galapas? Kennelijk was ik dus niet de eerste die met deze vraag zat. Al in de tiende jaargang van Galapas wist men niet meer waar de naam vandaan kwam.14 Günter stelde een zwaardere vraag: heeft Galapas nog een toekomst? Er was volgens hem te weinig interesse onder de studenten. Ook waren er zo weinig actieve redactieleden dat als er twee mee ophielden,

het blad zou ophouden te bestaan. Hij noemt vier mogelijke oplossingen voor zijn vraag: Galapas kon verder gaan zonder te veranderen, terugkeren naar het actualiteitenblad van Merlijn, uitbreiden en gaan schrijven voor de hele letterenfaculteit, of simpelweg worden opgeheven.15 Welk van deze vier is gekozen? Was de crisis zo erg als Günter vond? We zullen het zien in het vervolg op deze terugblik, waarin we gaan kijken naar Galapas in de jaren ’90.

De zeeheldencultus: Fans en critici door de eeuwen heen Een traditie in diachronisch perspectief De zeeheld is een cultuurfenomeen dat eeuwenlang een centrale plek in heeft genomen in de Nederlandse nationale identiteit. Het bestuderen van dit fenomeen kan ons tot een beter begrip van het verleden zelf leiden, maar ook onze verhouding tot dit verleden blootleggen. Dit is een relevante manier om geschiedenis bij de actualiteiten te betrekken,

want er is genoeg commotie geweest in de afgelopen jaren rondom de instandhouding, verplaatsing, bekladding of verwijdering van monumenten, bustes en straatnamen.

Daarnaast heeft de nog vrij recent uitgebrachte film over het leven van Michiel de Ruyter opnieuw het stof doen opwaaien rondom deze zeeheld. Ook is er het bijzondere verzamelwerk Roofstaat, waarin veel misdaden uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis worden aangemeten en wordt opgeroepen tot erkenning van dit verleden.1 Dit toont aan dat de zeeheldentraditie ook vandaag nog relevant is. Niet alleen heldenverering, maar ook het leveren van kritiek hierop kunnen we terugvoeren op de geschiedenis. Een held kan geen held zijn zonder dat hij geprezen wordt, en het is precies deze verering die tegenwoordig niet meer vanzelfsprekend lijkt te zijn. Hieruit vloeien twee vragen die zowel in contextuele als in temporale samenhang moeten worden bestudeerd. Hoe is deze traditie van zeeheldenverering tot stand gekomen? En waar komen de kritische kanttekeningen bij deze traditie vandaan?

Het maken van de mythe in de 17e eeuw Aan welke eigenschappen voldoet iemand voor hij ‘zeeheld’ kan worden genoemd? Het is belangrijk om te beseffen dat ‘zeeheld’ een historisch begrip is, dat ergens in de 16e eeuw grip kreeg op het taalgebruik in de Lage Landen. De ‘zeeheldencultus’ is hoe historici de verering van zeehelden proberen te begrijpen: als een samenhang van een reeks (culturele) manifestaties die zich als onderdeel van een script door de eeuwen heen hebben bewogen. Deze cultus berust op het idee dat alle zeehelden voldeden aan dezelfde voorwaarden: kloekmoedigheid, een christelijke moraal, en trouw aan de admiraliteit en de Staten-Generaal, waarmee een plek in het zeeheldenpantheon werd verworven.2 Hoewel het begrip uit de 16e eeuw stamt, is het logischer om het beginpunt voor deze cultus iets later, in de 17e eeuw, aan te wijzen. De 16e-eeuwse watergeuzen behaalden weliswaar gewichtige overwinningen bij verschillende slagen, maar ze werden hierom alléén geprezen en er is verder geen groot spektakel rondom ontstaan. Immers, de watergeuzen zijn ook niet de helden die nog in ons collectief bewustzijn bewaard zijn gebleven. Een logischer beginpunt vinden we bij Jacob van Heemskerk (1567-1607), de eerste grote zeeheld die wel binnen deze traditie past.

Zijn dood markeert het begin van een langdurige traditie die zich langzamerhand zou gaan uitbreiden. De herinnering aan Van Heemskerk werd namelijk gemythologiseerd en dit zou zo voor alle belangrijke en bekende zeehelden worden herhaald. Zij kregen altijd een praalbegrafenis en praalgraf en ze werden tevens herdacht met een golf van literatuuren kunstproducties: prenten, schilderijen, gedichten en pamfletten, zelfs biografieën of hagiografieën (biografie van een heilige) waarin ‘het leven en de daden’ of ‘de dagen en daden’ centraal stonden.3 De vorm van deze scriptachtige traditie veranderde weinig en deze was altijd makkelijk toe te passen op andere zeeofficieren, omdat de individuele elementen ervan moeilijk te verifiëren waren. Andere grote zeehelden die we vandaag de dag nog herkennen zijn Piet Hein (15771629), Maarten Tromp (1598-1653) en Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676). Zij waren allen opgeklommen vanaf een nederig bestaan: geboren als de zoon van bijvoorbeeld een zeilmaker of bierdrager. Hiermee scheidden zij zich bovendien af van ouderwetse zeeofficieren die vaak van adellijke afkomst waren.4 Dit onderstreepte hun vakkundigheid en hun competenties. Ook stierven deze zeehelden in vrijwel ieder geval tijdens een zeeslag, op het ‘hoogtepunt’ van hun carrière, waardoor hun overlijden niet simpelweg kon worden vergeten, maar een belangrijk element werd in de herinnering aan de slag. Volgens de mythes hadden zeehelden dan ook altijd weloverwogen en moralistische laatste woorden die teruggrepen op dezelfde thema’s: kloekmoedigheid, de christelijke moraal of loyaliteit, waarmee ze hun manschappen geruststelden.5 De ene zeeheld oversteeg de ander in de 17e eeuw, wat te zien is aan de praalgraven en laatste woorden, of de hoeveelheid prentenproducties en hagiografieën. Tegen

de tijd dat De Ruyter het leven liet in 1676 was de zeeheldenverering een elementair begrip geworden onder de inwoners van de Republiek.Veel groepen probeerden via (soms) ‘agressieve lobbypraktijken’ te delen in de eer van de zeeheld: familie, de gemeente of admiraliteit en de StatenGeneraal.6 Het praalgraf en de praalbegrafenis werden bekostigd door de staat: de zeeheld was daarmee vanaf het begin een staatsaangelegenheid. Dit moet wel worden genuanceerd: er zijn veel historische anekdotes te noemen van spontane feesten op straat of in de kroeg na nieuws van overzeese successen. Inwoners van de Lage Landen in de 17e eeuw konden zich dan ook goed identificeren met deze ruwe zeebonken.7 Wat zeehelden echt tot helden maakte is dat ze steun hadden van de bevolking. Het was ook een volksaangelegenheid: de zeehelden hadden een functie binnen de maritieme cultuur.

Kritiek in de Republiek Het is zo vanzelfsprekend dat deze helden een groot aantal fans hadden, dat we dreigen te vergeten dat niet iedereen ze liefhad. De 17e-eeuwse inwoners van de Republiek vergaten zeker niet dat deze cultus erg uit de kluiten was gewassen.

Vanaf het prille begin werden de praalgraven namelijk steeds grandiozer. Het gedenkteken aan Jacob van Heemskerk kan weliswaar als eerste praalgraf worden gezien, maar dit was nog beperkt tot een grafkelder en een knap plakkaat. De Ruyter zelf was uit marmer gehouwen, liggend op kanonnen en omringd door symbolen uit de oudheid. De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam huisvest het monument nog steeds en omschrijft het als “protestantse heiligenverering.”8 De Ruyter stond dan ook wel bekend om zijn vrome voorkomen. In anonieme pamfletten werden de helden van de 17e eeuw weleens belasterd. Zo schrijft één pamflettist dat Tromp en De Ruyter slechts “lafhartige Officieren en opgepronkte Popperuitertjes” zijn. Het waren geen dappere helden of ruwe zeebonken, slechts opgesmukte mannetjes die zich alleen bezighielden met hun voorkomen.9 Dit zijn dan vooral de zeehelden die grote nationale bekendheid hadden en ook netjes aan de randvoorwaarden voldeden om ze binnen de zeeheldencultus te plaatsen; eigenlijk haast onfeilbare iconen, die niks fout deden, althans, volgens de meesten. Er zijn ook interessante gevallen die niet helemaal binnen dat plaatje passen. Bepaalde zeehelden waren van adellijke afkomst, of werden zelfs beticht van het ontbreken aan kloekmoedigheid. Dat laatste kon weleens tot gewelddadige uitspattingen leiden, zoals in het geval van Jan Evertsen de Oude: toen hij met een beschadigd schip uit een gevecht vluchtte, probeerde een groep vrouwen hem te lynchen aan wal. Pamflettisten wisten ook direct de nadruk te leggen op zijn gebrekkige mores. De Oude overleed jaren later alsnog in een zeeslag en wist zo ook in een praalgraf terecht te komen.10 Deze kritieken geven ons een duidelijk beeld van 17e-eeuwse waarden. Vraagstukken rondom slavernij of het buitengewoon gewelddadige kolonialisme en de rol die daarbinnen was weggelegd voor de zeehelden, waren

absoluut niet de norm. Dit terwijl die een onmiskenbare rol gespeeld hebben door slavenforten te veroveren of VOC- en WIC-vloten te beschermen.Tegenwoordig gaat de aandacht van onderzoekers en het publiek meer uit naar de schaduwkant van dit verleden, wat nog op dakgevels en in kunstwerken te zien is. Dit betreft ook zeehelden en hun familie, die soms werden afgebeeld met slaven.11 Er zijn ook verhalen overgeleverd, zoals die van de slaaf ‘Jan Kompagnie’ op het schip van De Ruyter, maar het is moeilijk te onderzoeken of dit slechts verhalen zijn.12 Uiteindelijk lijkt dit allemaal minder van belang te zijn geweest in de 17e eeuw zelf, en is er maar beperkt historisch bewijs voor kritische stemmen over deze onderwerpen.

Oude en nieuwe helden in de 19e eeuw In de vroege 19e eeuw was de natiestaat Nederland ontstaan, waar zich in de 17e eeuw nog de Republiek bevond.

De herinnering aan deze republiek en de Gouden Eeuw die deze doormaakte was belangrijk voor deze 19e-eeuwse natiestaat, die niet eenzelfde grootmacht was, maar nog wel een soort nostalgische zelflegitimering onttrok uit deze tijd.

Naast de frappante casus van Jan van Speijk (1802-1831) die zijn schip opblies in de haven van Antwerpen tijdens de Belgische Opstand, waren de grote zeehelden in de 19e eeuw eigenlijk voornamelijk 17e-eeuwse figuren. Hiermee had Van Speijk een plekje verdiend ‘in het pantheon’, compleet met praalbegrafenis en prentenexplosie, maar daar bleef het ook bij. Ondanks een korte periode van verworven roem werd Van Speijk geen grote held zoals Piet Hein of Michiel de Ruyter: hij was geen grote admiraal en zijn daad was onbelangrijk.13 Niettemin heeft hij een door de staat bekostigde praalbegrafenis gekregen, wat sinds De Ruyter niet meer gedaan was. Haast alle praalgraven na 1677 werden betaald door families. Hierop was Van Speijk inderdaad een uitzondering, maar hij behaalde bij lange na niet de status van De Ruyter, wiens roem ongeëvenaard was.

Ergens na deze periode in de 17e eeuw was het karakter van de zeeheldencultus veranderd. Sommige zeehelden uit de tijd van de Republiek kregen een hernieuwde betekenis of relevantie in de 19e eeuw, soms met een nationalistisch tintje.

In de 17e eeuw had het begrip ‘zeeheld’ een bepaalde betekenis, maar dit is net zoals de Republiek zelf gaan veranderen. Vanuit demografisch opzicht had Nederland in de 19e eeuw niet dezelfde maritiem georiënteerde beroepsbevolking. Een goed voorbeeld van een nieuwe nationalistische insteek bij een oude held vinden we in

het 19e-eeuwse liedje De Zilvervloot over de 17e-eeuwse Piet Hein. Het liedje viert niet alleen de overwinning van Hein, maar Hein en de erfenis van de 17e eeuw worden op één lijn gebracht: “zijn naam is klein, [maar] zijn daden bennen groot.” De tegenstelling in het liedje past perfect bij de Republiek, dat een van de kleinste landjes in Europa was, maar tegelijkertijd een ongeëvenaarde grootmacht.

Het beklemtoont bovendien de materiële waarden van de Gouden Eeuw.14 Niet alleen oude helden worden opnieuw gewaardeerd, maar er worden ook nieuwe helden in het leven geroepen die in de 17e eeuw leefden. In 1825 schreef Gerrit Engelsbert Gerrits een ‘zeeheldenverhaal’ in de vorm van dialogen over Jan Pieterszoon Coen: Het leven en de daden van den doorluchtigen zeeheld J. Psz. Koen.15 Soortgelijke boekjes verschenen wel vaker, over de klassieke helden althans, maar dit was een heel curieuze verschijning: deze boekjes hadden expliciet het doel de deugden van vaderlandse helden aan de jeugd bij te brengen.16 Daarom biedt dit ons een inzicht in hoe het begrip ‘zeeheld’ moet zijn veranderd, wat Coen ook interessanter maakt dan bijvoorbeeld Van Speijk, en relevanter dan de grote 17e-eeuwse zeehelden.

Coen was bepaald geen held in de 17e eeuw, maar toch heeft hij ergens onderweg de titel verdiend: ook vandaag staat hij nog bekend als zeeheld.

We kunnen dit in het licht van de 17e-eeuwse traditie ook verbinden aan de fervente zoektochten in de 19e en 20e eeuw die naar de begraafplaats van Coen moesten leiden.

Hier zijn zelfs meerdere herdenkingsmonumenten en een museum uit voortgekomen.17 Hij werd bij naam zeeheld genoemd, terwijl Coen geen echte zeevaarder was, maar eerder een bureauman. Hij vocht niet op zee, maar leidde wel enkele strafexpedities als gouverneur-generaal en had in zekere zin dus ook een militaire identiteit.18 De Ruyter was voor de Engelsen in de 17e eeuw de ‘schrik van de zee’, terwijl Coen een gevreesde krijgsheer in Indonesië was.19 Hij was geen zeebonk, maar hij was nog wel ruw: zijn ouderwetse kloekmoedigheid werkte hand in hand met zijn ‘burgerlijke moed’ als een koopman en gouverneur.20 Coen was daarom de held bij uitstek voor de 19e-eeuwse Nederlander.

Hernieuwde kritiek op een hernieuwd heldenvertoog vanaf de 19e eeuw Het begrip zeeheld heeft een verandering doorgemaakt; betekent dat dat er een nieuwe basis kwam voor kritiek?

We hebben gezien hoe kritiek in de 17e eeuw afhankelijk was van het beeld dat de zeeheldencultus schepte en van de waarden van mensen in de samenleving.Voor zowel oude als nieuwe helden is het fenomeen ‘zeeheld’ versmolten met een 19e-eeuwse nostalgische herinnering aan de Gouden Eeuw. De zeeheld moest helpen de natie te legitimeren, maar die natie omvatte nu een heel andere bevolking. De zeeheld is meer een (ongenuanceerd) symbool geworden van de Nederlandse drang om te handelen en te ontdekken en ook militair op te treden waar het nodig is. Hier zien we nog een belangrijke ontwikkeling in het begrip van de zeeheld. De focus van de cultus is verschoven: Piet Hein en De Ruyter werden voorheen geëerd om hun moed, maar zijn nu onderdelen binnen een groter narratief over de Gouden Eeuw en de glorie van de Republiek.

Dit narratief maakt ook meer ruimte voor andere figuren als zeehelden, omdat zij allen te maken hadden met voortvarendheid en economische vooruitgang. Hierin zit de sleutel tot het begrijpen van ‘de nieuwe kritiek’ die zich op precies deze economische aspecten richt. Binnen dit vooruitgangsvertoog is het stichten van Nederlands grootste kolonie natuurlijk onmisbaar en dat is waar Coen het voortouw neemt. Hij is tegenwoordig zelfs een personificatie van het Nederlandse koloniale verleden geworden, zeker nu de voornaamste herinnering aan hem de genocide op de Banda-eilanden is, puur in naam van een monopolie op de specerijenhandel die later alsnog verloren werd.21 Zijn persoonlijke handelen stuitte weleens op kritiek, zelfs in de 17e eeuw. Niettemin moet meteen genoemd worden dat de kritiek op Coen in het verlengde van het kolonialisme en imperialisme van de Republiek, en het latere Nederland, pas echt opkwam nadat hij tot zeeheld was gemaakt.

Kritische stemmen hebben lange tijd ondergedaan voor de heldencultus. Toen het plan voor het standbeeld in Hoorn kwam, dat tussen 1884 en 1893 werd bedacht

en uitgevoerd, kwamen ook de kritische stemmen duidelijker naar voren. De kritiek werd in de late 19e en vroege 20e eeuw vooral belichaamd door socialistische of communistische activisten en politici, die slechts een achtergrondrol kregen als minuscule tegenhanger van de dogmatische verafgoding van Coen en het kolonialisme, dat zich zelfs manifesteerde in ‘Coenfeesten’ en herdenkingen van Coens leven en overlijden.22 In de loop van de 20e eeuw werden de mogelijkheden ruimer, toen bijvoorbeeld de bewogen kunstenaar Jan Slauerhoff in het interbellum een kritisch toneelstuk schreef over Coen. Dit mocht pas decennia later worden opgevoerd, in besloten kring door een studentengroep, nadat het steeds werd verboden door de overheid.23 Dit markeerde een nieuwe periode. Pas na de Tweede Wereldoorlog en tegelijkertijd met de dekolonisatiebeweging werd expliciete kritiek langzaamaan genormaliseerd doordat een jongere generatie geëngageerde activisten dat stokje overnam en zich bleef verzetten tegen deze conservatieve tendens. In de jaren 80 werden er bijvoorbeeld bijeenkomsten georganiseerd door die jonge generatie om Coen en de cultus rondom zijn standbeeld in Hoorn te hekelen.24 Sinds het begin van de dekolonisatieperiode kreeg de kritiek dus een breder draagvlak en gingen historici en het publiek ook met een kritischere blik naar andere zeehelden en hun rol binnen bijvoorbeeld de slavenhandel kijken. De kritieken die historisch tegen zeehelden zijn opgeworpen, zijn afhankelijk van wat de belangrijke deugden waren voor de mensen uit die tijd. Hierdoor wordt het duidelijk hoe deze kritieken vanaf de 17e eeuw tot op heden zijn veranderd in nauw verband met de ontwikkelingen binnen het bredere heldenvertoog over de Gouden Eeuw en voortvarendheid van de Republiek. Heldencultussen overleven door historische karaktereigenschappen naar het heden te verplaatsen, fouten te excuseren en een drang naar identificatie te voeden. Deze helden van het verleden bieden daarom een unieke kijk op hoe mensen hun relatie tot de staat, de natie of hun verleden begrijpen of ervaren, en hoe dit begrip en deze verhouding door de eeuwen heen veranderlijk zijn gebleven.

The modern calendar Another gift from the Romans

As a big fan of the Romans, I tend to look for their traces in many aspects of modern life. Moreover, being born and raised in Italy and living in a part of the world that has been heavily influenced by Roman culture for centuries does not really help me get rid of such a sentimental tendency. Yet, who can deny the many gifts the Romans handed down to us? As the parodic movie Monty Python’s Life of Brian once wittily said: ‘All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?’ The question was asked by the leader of the Jewish resistance against the Romans and, ironically enough, it sounds more like praise than an attack on the enemy. Indeed, we should thank the Romans

for many things that we take for granted today. And yet, the group of English comedians forgot one important thing, something we use daily: the calendar.

The very word calendar comes from the name of a Roman sacred day, occurring every first day of a month (kalendae). It is the same in many modern languages (calendario, kalender, calendrier, kalenteri, calendàrio). Moreover, the whole system for naming and counting months still in use today finds its roots in the Roman culture. Of course, it took centuries to acquire the precise, fixed layout we know now. So the question is: how did such a system end up being used worldwide in the 21st century?

The time of kings and pontiffs As almost everything concerning the beginnings of Roman culture, the invention of the calendar is shrouded in the mist of times. According to literary sources, the first calendar dated back to the reign of Romulus (8th century BC) and was based on the cycles of the moon. The year started in March and was divided into ten months, the last of which was December1.We still have traces of this archaic calendar in the names of the months September, October, November and December, respectively the seventh (septem), eighth (octo), ninth (novem) and tenth (decem) month of the year (fig. 1). Every month lasted 30 or 31 days, for a total of 304 days per year… far too few to cover all the seasons and the actual length of the solar year. In fact, it seems like winter was not taken into account, probably because of the lack

of agricultural activity, and left aside until spring came back.

This inevitably created great confusion and the Romans had to wait for another king to fix things up.

According to the legend, it was Numa Pompilius, the second and wisest king of Rome, who introduced the twelve months system. Following the Pythagorean theory about the luckiness of odd numbers,2 instead of adding two more months of 30 and 31 days, Numa decided to take one day from every 30-day month. As a result, there were six 29-day and four 31-day months, for a total of 298 days. To these, Numa added two additional months of 29 (January) and 28 (February) days at the beginning of the calendar, thus reaching a total of 355 days in a year (fig. 2).3 It is indeed thanks to him if today we celebrate New Year on the 1st of January. But there were still two problems. First of all, February had (and still has) an even number of days, in order to let the year have an odd number of days. However, since the month was dedicated to the februum, the annual purification, superstitious perils were safely avoided. The second problem was that there were ten days still missing to complete the earth’s revolution around the sun. To fix the misalignment with the solar year, an intercalary month of 27 days was added every other year after the 23rd or 24th day of February. This month was called Mercedonius (‘Work Month’) and it perfectly aligned the Roman calendar with the solar year every nineteen years. As a matter of fact, this system could work… if it was correctly and systematically applied.

The biggest issue with such a system was that the inclusion of the intercalary month to fill the gap was decided year by year by the pontifex maximus: the highest religious authority in Rome, but also a very important political figure. Since the terms of a political office corresponded with the calendar year, it was not unusual that a pontiff decided to “shorten” or “lengthen” the duration of a year according to his personal political agenda4. Moreover, in case of war, the intercalations were often forgotten, resulting in an irreversible misalignment with the solar year. This led to profound confusion, therefore a new intervention was necessary.

The Julian calendar When in 46 BC Julius Caesar (100 – 44 BC) was elected pontifex maximus, he promoted a reform of the old Roman calendar. Because of the pontiffs’ abuse of power between 63 and 46 BC, there had been only five intercalary months, instead of eight, and before Caesar’s election, there had not been any intercalary months for five years. Therefore, the famous Roman dictator found a way to solve this problem for good, so that the calendar could always be aligned with the solar year.

By the time he started his pontificate, Caesar had already spent some time in Egypt, where one of the most ancient solar calendars in history was in use5. Lucan, in his epic poem Pharsalia (book 10), describes the scene when Caesar, while conversing with an Egyptian wise man, decided to create a version of the calendar even better than the one created by Exodus (395 – 337 BC ca.), the astronomer who calculated the duration of a solar year.6 When he came back to Rome, Caesar summoned the best physicists to create the new calendar.7 According to Pliny, the leading astronomer of the project was indeed an Egyptian scholar, Sosigenes of Alexandria,8 indicating how important Egyptian knowledge was for the creation of the new calendar.

However, before the new system could be applied, the gap with the solar year had to be filled. First of all, two intercalary months (Intercalaris Prior and Posterior) were added to the year 46 BC, which became a 445 days long year9. Second of all, the lunar calendar was definitively abandoned to adopt a solar calendar, which means that months lasted longer.

The twelve months of Numa Pompilius’ calendar were maintained, but they were given the same number of days as they have today, and the traditional system of counting days was kept unaltered. Every month had three main sacred

May (Maius) was dedicated to Maia, the goddess of fertility, whose festival was held in that month. On the same fertility line, also the following month, June (Iunius) was dedicated to another mother goddess, Iuno.

Previously called Quintilis, as it was the fifth month of Romulus’ calendar, July (Iulius) took its current name from one of the reformers, clearly Julius Caesar, who was born in that month.18 The same happened to August (Augustus): originally called Sextilis (‘sixth month’), it was then named after Caesar’s heir, Octavian Augustus, as many significant events for his ascension to power occurred in that month.19 Finally, as said before, September, October, November and December simply retained a name that showed their original position in the 8th century BC calendar.

days, kalendae (first day), nonae (the fifth or the seventh day) and ides (the thirteenth or the fifteenth day). All days in a month were counted starting from these sacred days, counting the days that came before these festivities.

Therefore, for example, the 2nd of January (a month whose nonae fell on the fifth day) was called ‘the fourth day before the nonae of January’.

The old system of the intercalary month was abandoned as it was not useful anymore. Instead of it, an intercalary day was added to February every four years. This was called ante diem bis sextum kalendas Martias (‘the sixth doubled day before the Kalends—first day—of March’), which is why the years with a 29-day February are called today ‘bissextile’. According to the day-counting system, then, the bissextile day originally fell on the 24th of February, the sixth day before the 1st day of March. This lets us assume that the 29th of February was actually introduced later, although there are no specific sources about when this happened.

What happened next?

Even though the Julian calendar lies at the basis of the modern calendar, what we use today is not quite the Roman calendar, but the so-called Gregorian calendar. It is not surprising that another big change in time measurement was carried out by another pontiff, this time from the Catholic Church: Pope Gregory XIII. On the 24th of February (the classical leap day) 1582, with his apostolic letter Inter gravissimas, the pope introduced a “new” calendar10 (fig. 3). This reform was promoted to provide the Catholic community with a universal system to compute Easter, in the renovation climate started with the Council of Trent (but this is matter for another article). Another practical reason to replace the Julian calendar was to fix the misalignment with the astronomical seasons caused by the accumulation of too many leap days in the decades after Julius Caesar’s reform.

According to Macrobius11, problems started quite soon, as priests ‘proceeded to insert the intercalary day […] at the beginning of each fourth year instead of at its end, although the intercalation ought to have been made at the end of each fourth year and before the beginning of the fifth. This error continued for thirty-six years by which time twelve intercalary days had been inserted instead of the number actually due, namely nine’. As a result, miscalculation and discrepancies went on for centuries, thus requiring the adoption of a new system. However, the Gregorian calendar was not immediately and unanimously accepted by all Christian lands, as can be seen from figure 4. Protestant countries were initially quite suspicious about the new calendar promoted by the Catholic leader, which was looked upon as a scheme to bring the rebellious countries,

In those countries that did eventually adopt the new Catholic calendar, there was a transition period in which both the Gregorian and the Julian calendars were used simultaneously. To solve ambiguities, the notations “Old Style” (O.S.) and “New Style” (N.S.) were employed in those countries, such as Great Britain, which delayed the adoption of the Gregorian calendar for centuries13.

Still a Roman conquest Today the Catholic reformed calendar is accepted as valid all over the world, with a few exceptions. In some cases, such as the celebration of religious festivities, people in many countries still use local traditional calendars. It is the case, for instance, of the Chinese calendar, determining a different New Year’s Day among other festivities. Islamic communities still use the so called Hijri calendar to determine the proper days for religious duties, such as the annual period of fasting or the pilgrimage to Mecca. In other countries, like in India, the Gregorian calendar is used alongside the Indian National calendar, also called Shalivahana Shaka.

And yet it is undeniable that the Roman calendar, in its evolved form of the Gregorian calendar, has “conquered” all the world, replacing or coming up beside hundreds of different counting systems. In certain circumstances, we are still able to see traces of the original Julian calendar.

It is the case, for instance, of some liturgical feasts, such as Christmas, which is celebrated by Orthodox and Anabaptists on the 6th of January.14 These communities still

refuse to calculate their religious festivities according to the system imposed by the Catholic Church and keep counting days following the Julian calendar. Moreover, the Roman calendar is also used as agricultural calendar by the Berbers of North Africa (a region long dominated by the Romans)15.

However, the most evident connection we still have with the Roman calendar is the name of the months, which have stayed unaltered for centuries (see below, fig. 5).

However, it is really surprising to realize that a system invented more than two thousand years ago in a city at the center of the Mediterranean Sea has been slowly adopted practically all over the world. Een radicale breuk met het verleden Het korte leven van de Jakobijnse kalender

De kalender zoals we die nu kennen is voor ons vanzelfsprekend. Toch is het slechts een paar honderd jaar geleden dat de ons zo bekende Gregoriaanse kalender werd ingevoerd. In 1582 vaardigde paus Gregorius een bul uit waarin stond vermeld dat het na 4 oktober van datzelfde jaar in één keer 15 oktober zou worden. Zo moest de achterstand van 10 dagen op het tropische jaar worden ingehaald. De verandering verliep niet zo soepel door het protestantse verzet tegen deze katholieke maatregel. Veel landen, waaronder het huidige Duitsland en Engeland, gingen pas halverwege en aan het einde van de 18e eeuw overstag en binnen de Nederlanden waren de gewesten verdeeld, waardoor er op hetzelfde moment twee verschillende data werden gehanteerd. Het verzet tegen de katholieke kalender bleef bestaan. Aan het einde van de 18e eeuw kreeg de Gregoriaanse kalender een radicale aanval te verduren uit de hoek van de Franse Jakobijnen.

De bestorming van de Bastille op 14 juli 1789 wordt doorgaans als het begin van de Franse Revolutie beschouwd. Een grote groep ontevreden burgers plunderde een rusthuis waar wapens lagen en trok gewapend naar de beruchte gevangenis die voor hen symbool stond voor de politieke tirannie gedurende het ancien régime. Dat er op dat moment slechts een handvol gevangenen in de Bastille zaten opgesloten, waarvan de meesten ook nog eens van goede komaf waren, was de opstandelingen geheel onbekend. In werkelijkheid was de bestorming volgens de Amerikaanse letterkundige Lawrence D. Kritzman niet

zozeer een bevrijdingsactie, maar een tegenreactie op de militaire bedreiging van het koninklijke leger, dat de stad had omsingeld.1 De koning had ongeveer 20.000 huurtroepen opgetrommeld om de orde te handhaven, nadat er diverse rellen waren voorgevallen in Parijs.2 De Parijzenaren vroegen de gouverneur van Parijs om de wapens te verdelen en het intimiderende kanon bij de Bastille te verwijderen, maar hij weigerde. Na deze weigering nog een aantal misverstanden zag de bevolking van Parijs zich genoodzaakt actie te ondernemen en viel een menigte van ambachtslieden en winkeliers de gevangenis aan.3

Het idee van een revolutionaire kalender kwam voort uit een ideologie waarin er voor het katholicisme geen plek was.

In plaats van de complexiteit van deze historische gebeurtenis te belichten, begonnen geleerden de symbolische waarde van de bestorming van de Bastille te onderstrepen. Veel aanhangers van de romantiek, een artistieke stroming aan het eind van de 18e eeuw, maakten zich schuldig aan deze mythevorming, maar ook latere geleerden konden er wat van. Zo beschuldigt Kritzman de invloedrijke filosoof Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) ervan de Bastille te hebben veranderd in een mythisch symbool van onderdrukking dat de Franse bevolking als één verenigd wezen trachtte omver te halen.4 Gedurende de Franse Revolutie waren er ook al tegenstrijdige opvattingen over de duur en betekenis van bepaalde revolutionaire gebeurtenissen, zo stelt de Britse literator Sanja Perovic.5 Dit gaf nogal wat moeilijkheden toen de Jakobijnen, een radicale, republikeinse beweging binnen de linkse factie, in juni 1793 de macht grepen en als onderdeel van hun ‘ontkersteningsbeweging’ een nieuwe, uniforme kalender wilden introduceren.6 Welke dag moesten ze verkiezen tot het begin van ‘Jaar Eén van de Heerschappij van de Rede’? 14 juli 1789 of toch 4 augustus 1789, de nacht waarop feodale privileges werden afgeschaft?

Ook 10 augustus 1792, de dag waarop de koning werd afgezet, dong mee.7 Het idee van een revolutionaire kalender bestond al langer en was onderdeel van de ontwikkeling van een revolutionaire ideologie waarin er voor het katholicisme geen plek was. Deze ideologie benadrukte het belang van waarheid en deugd en ging uit van ‘het despotisme van de burger over het individu’, zoals Maximilien de Robespierre (1758-1794), de leider van de Jakobijnen, de onderwerping van het individu aan de algemene wil zelf samenvatte.8 Een ander onderdeel van de ideologie was een sterk antireligieuze oriëntatie die zich onder andere uitte in een ‘kruistocht’ tegen alle priesters die geen eed hadden afgelegd waarin ze beloofden loyaal te zijn aan de staat. Ook werden veel kerken gesloten en veranderd in ‘Tempels van de Rede’.9

Veel van de revolutionaire ideeën ten tijde van de Franse Revolutie, waaronder de ontkersteningsbeweging, vonden hun oorsprong in de Verlichting. Dit was een cultuurfilosofische stroming in Europa die in de 17e eeuw haar intrede deed en ook in de 18e eeuw in grote mate het intellectuele klimaat bepaalde. De meeste Verlichte denkers stelden dat ofwel de rede ofwel ervaring de voornaamste bron van kennis was, en trachtten bijgeloof te bestrijden. Hoewel veel denkers toegewijde christenen bleven, waren er ook filosofen die een heel ander soort geloofsopvatting voorstelden. Volgens Charles A. Gliozzo, emeritus hoogleraar geschiedenis aan de Michigan State University, was Voltaire een groot voorloper van de ontkersteningsbeweging. De Franse filosoof Voltaire (16941778) stelde dat God de wereld weliswaar geschapen had, maar dat hij zich niet meer rechtstreeks bemoeide met het lot van de mensen. Bovendien was de ware God niet alleen de vader van de christenen, maar van álle mensen. Hieruit volgde dat de christelijke God niet de ware God was en dat de christelijke religie ook niet het ware geloof kon zijn. Integendeel, het christendom was met zijn relikwieën, kruizen en gebedssnoeren juist de bron van een ziekelijk bijgeloof. Daarom pleitte Voltaire voor de onderdrukking van de kerkelijke hiërarchie, de afschaffing van het celibaat en de ontkenning van de doctrine van de Drie-eenheid en de Incarnatie (de menswording van God).10 Samen met andere Verlichte denkers ondergroef Voltaire de fundamenten van het katholicisme en gaf hij een aanzet tot de Jakobijnse ontkersteningsbeweging.

In de revolutionaire staat was geen plaats voor de kalender die paus Gregorius een paar honderd jaar geleden had geïntroduceerd.11 In werkelijkheid bestond er in de 18e eeuw nog helemaal geen uniforme kalender in Europa. Juliaanse en Gregoriaanse kalenders waren tegelijkertijd in gebruik.12 De keuze voor een revolutionaire kalender werkte dus ook de eenwording van Frankrijk in de hand. Het bepalen van dag 1 van de nieuwe kalender kreeg daarmee een sterk politieke betekenis.

Onder sommige groepen was 14 juli 1789 al uitgeroepen tot de eerste dag, terwijl de volkspers 10 augustus 1792 hanteerde als Jaar 1 van Gelijkheid. Uiteindelijk werd gekozen voor de symbolische datum 22 september 1792, de dag waarop de Franse Republiek werd uitgeroepen.

Toevalligerwijs viel deze dag samen met de herfstequinox, het punt waarop de zon loodrecht boven de evenaar staat.

Dit versterkte voor de revolutionairen het idee dat ze de natuurlijke orde der dingen hadden bereikt.13

De werking van de revolutionaire kalender In een poging in zijn geheel afstand te doen van het oude systeem, implementeerden de revolutionairen een kalender die in alle opzichten anders was dan de Gregoriaanse. Deze drastische omslag was vooral zichtbaar in de decimale indeling van zowel de weken als de tijd zelf. In het decreet van 24 november 1793 stond vermeld dat de namen van de dagen van de decaden als volgt moesten heten: primidi, duodi, tridi, quartidi, sextidi, septidi en octidi. De dagen werden voortaan onderverdeeld in tien uren van honderd minuten die ieder weer uit honderd seconden bestonden. In vrijwel alle onderdelen van de nieuwe kalender zat een grote hoeveelheid symboliek verborgen. Zo werden de vijf aanvullende dagen de sans-culottides genoemd, naar de sansculotten, de bijnaam van de, in grote mate geradicaliseerde, onderlaag van de Franse bevolking, omdat ze geen adellijke kniebroeken droeg. Na ieder jaar volgden deze vijf complementaire dagen, plus nog een extra dag wanneer het om een schrikkeljaar ging.

Op die manier moest nieuwjaarsdag ieder jaar samenvallen met de herfstequinox. Een periode van vier jaar werd franciade genoemd, ter herinnering aan de oprichting van het republikeinse bestuur vier jaar na het begin van de Revolutie. Iedere vier jaar moesten er dan ook ‘republikeinse spellen’ worden gespeeld om de Franse Revolutie te vieren. In 1798 werd de kalender verplicht gesteld. Werknemers die op zondag vrij wilden nemen, moesten worden ontslagen.Vooral deze vermindering van het aantal vrije dagen in een maand maakte de kalender erg onpopulair onder het volk.18

Hoewel het idee van een nieuwe kalender al sinds de oprichting van de Republiek de ronde deed, zou het tot oktober 1793 duren voordat er serieuze stappen werden ondernomen voor de instelling van de republikeinse kalender.

Ondertussen werden er belangrijke gebeurtenissen, zoals het afzetten van de koning op 10 augustus 1792, door de kalender, die pas op 22 september 1792 moest beginnen, buiten beschouwing gelaten. Bovendien zat er een gat van zes weken tussen de datum waarop volgens de volkspers Jaar I van Gelijkheid was begonnen en het daadwerkelijke begin van de kalender.14 Al deze kwesties bemoeilijkten de integratie van de nieuwe kalender in het revolutionaire Frankrijk.

De eerste publiekelijke maatregel werd op 5 oktober 1793 getroffen met het uitvaardigen van een decreet. De begindatum van het Franse tijdperk werd vastgesteld op 22 september 1792. Het huidige tijdperk zou worden afgeschaft.

Daarnaast werd er besloten dat het jaar voortaan uit 12 maanden van 30 dagen zou bestaan, plus nog 5 dagen die tot geen specifieke maand behoorden om het jaar compleet te maken. Elke maand werd in drie delen van tien dagen opgedeeld, decaden genoemd. Een volgend decreet op 24 oktober 1793 maakte de nomenclatuur van de nieuwe kalender bekend. Niet alleen de maanden kregen nieuwe namen, ook de dagen kregen allemaal hun eigen naam, verwijzend naar natuurlijke fenomenen en gereedschappen, zoals aubergines, spinazie en tonijn. Zo heette de eerste maand ‘Vendémiaire’ (wijnmaand) en kreeg de eerste dag de naam ‘Raisin’ (rozijn) toebedeeld. Het decreet van 24 november 1793 maakte de invoering van de revolutionaire kalender definitief. In de artikelen van dit decreet werden de namen van alle dagen en maanden voorgoed vastgelegd.15

Het bleek een lastige opgave om de oude tijd te vervangen door een nieuwe totaliteit.

De Jakobijnse kalender zou tot 1806 in gebruik blijven. Het uiteindelijke falen van de kalender kan volgens de inmiddels overleden Amerikaanse historicus John Hall Stewart worden toegeschreven aan het antireligieuze karakter ervan, de vermindering van het aantal rustdagen in de maand en simpelweg de tegenzin van mensen om een geheel nieuw systeem aan te leren.16 Volgens Perovic ligt de echte reden

in de vergaande ambitie van de revolutionairen om een radicale breuk in de tijd te bewerkstelligen en het begin van een nieuwe tijd aan te kondigen. Gilbert Romme (17501795), de meest prominente architect van de kalender, zag de invoering van het nieuwe tijdsysteem als een logische maatregel om de samenleving verder te rationaliseren.

De kalender markeerde volgens hem het tijdperk waarin de geschiedenis van de Franse Revolutie samenkwam met de natuur zelf. De Gregoriaanse kalender moest worden ontdaan van zijn religieuze symboliek en er moest een waterscheiding komen tussen het prerevolutionaire ‘ancien régime’ en de contemporaine tijd. De kalender bleek echter niet in staat om deze radicale breuk te verenigen met het begin van een nieuwe tijd. Een kalender garandeert regelmaat, coördinatie en een cyclisch tijdverloop. Het nieuwe, historische bewustzijn van het leven in een nieuwe tijd kon niet in cyclische termen worden uitgedrukt.

Doordat maanden en dagen naar natuurlijke verschijnselen en niet naar historische gebeurtenissen verwezen, verdween de geschiedenis naar de achtergrond. De breuk met het prerevolutionaire tijdperk was dan wel succesvol verlopen, maar het bleek nog een lastige opgave om de oude tijd te vervangen door een nieuwe totaliteit.17 Hoewel de republikeinse kalender geen lang leven was beschoren, spreekt het idee van een radicaal andere tijdsindeling nog steeds tot onze verbeelding. Zo toont de Wikipediapagina van de ‘Franse republikeinse kalender’ ons precies welke datum het vandaag zou zijn als we die kalender nog steeds hanteerden. De drastische wijziging boeit ons, omdat ze in zekere zin symbool staat voor de Franse Revolutie zelf en het de ultieme poging was om af te doen met het verleden en met een schone lei te beginnen.

Terwijl Kritzman latere wetenschappers ervan betichtte het begin van de Franse Revolutie in een mythe te hebben veranderd, waren de Jakobijnen zelf ook niet vies van een sterk staaltje symboolpolitiek. Het uiteindelijke falen van de kalender is dan eigenlijk weer een metafoor voor de onmogelijkheid om ooit definitief met het verleden af te rekenen.

Lord, I still do not know what time is De overpeinzingen van St. Augustinus

Sint Augustinus (354-430) was onder andere bisschop, filosoof en theoloog. Zijn grote liefde voor God heeft hij weergegeven in een aantal werken, waaronder de Confessies1. Dit boek is de autobiografie van Augustinus, waarin hij zijn weg van zondaar naar christen beschrijft en God prijst voor de hulp die hij hem hierbij heeft geboden. Het resultaat is een monoloog aan God, waarin Augustinus hem constant vraagt hem te leiden en gefocust te houden. Augustinus probeert een aantal grote vragen te beantwoorden, onder andere over belangrijke kwesties rondom tijd, die ertoe dienen om het bestaan van God te bewijzen. Hij vraagt zich af wat tijd te maken heeft met de creatie van God en de schepping; hoe verleden, heden en toekomst zich tot elkaar verhouden; en hoe we tijd kunnen meten. Terwijl Augustinus dit alles beschrijft, realiseert hij zich één ding: “I confess to you, Lord, that I still do not know what time is.”2 Augustinus begint bij het begin: de schepping. Bestond er zoiets als tijd voor de schepping? Augustinus denkt van niet.

Hij zegt dat God hemel en aarde niet binnen het universum heeft geschapen, omdat er voor de schepping nog geen universum was.3 Hetzelfde geldt voor tijd: God heeft tijd gecreëerd met de schepping. Dit betekent dus dat de schepping niet op een bepaald moment heeft plaatsgevonden en dat het niet lang of kort duurde. De schepping had geen ‘waar’ en ‘wanneer’, omdat er geen plaats of tijd bestond voor God besloot plaats en tijd te scheppen.4 Augustinus vindt het daarom ook vreemd als mensen vragen wat er was voor de schepping of wat er daarvoor gebeurde. “...if time did not exist before heaven and earth, why do people ask what you were then doing? There was no ‘then’ when there was no time.”5 Als er geen plaats en tijd bestonden voor de schepping, hoe heeft de schepping dan plaats kunnen vinden? Dit is het volgende waar Augustinus zich over buigt. In de Bijbel staat dat God het universum heeft geschapen met een woord, maar hoe kan dat? Een woord neemt plaats in de tijd, het duurt een bepaalde periode om het uit te spreken, de klanken komen en gaan. Dit moet volgens Augustinus betekenen dat God niet een normale taal sprak, zoals wij

die op aarde kennen. Daarom moet het woord dat God gesproken heeft oneindig zijn geweest. Het moet continu gesproken worden en onveranderlijk zijn. Er gaat niets aan vooraf en wordt door niets gevolgd. Dit woord “… is said in the simultaneity of eternity.”6 Augustinus gaat verder met het definiëren van tijd door het op te splitsen in verschillende onderdelen: verleden, heden en toekomst. Hij beschrijft de toekomst als dingen die komen, het heden als dingen die zijn en het verleden als dingen die weg zijn gegaan. Dat betekent eigenlijk dat zowel verleden als toekomst niet bestaan, anders zouden zij het heden zijn. Wat zijn verleden en toekomst dan?

Augustinus lost dit probleem op door beide te relativeren met het heden. In het heden hebben we namelijk een idee van wat zal komen: een verwachting die we nu hebben van de toekomst. Ook hebben we herinneringen van dingen die zijn geweest, die we herbeleven als we eraan denken. Dit betekent dat zowel verleden als toekomst alleen bestaan in het heden. Maar wat is dan het nu? Het is moeilijk om dit te bepalen; omdat elke bepaling van tijd – zoals jaren, maanden, dagen enzovoorts – nog steeds een bepaalde duur heeft.

Daardoor bestaan zij gedeeltelijk uit verleden en toekomst.

Het heden heeft volgens Augustinus geen duur.7 Hoe kan het dan, vraagt Augustinus zich af, dat het wel lijkt alsof we tijd kunnen meten? Dingen met een bepaalde duur liggen niet alleen in het heden, maar ook in de toekomst en het verleden, die beide weer enkel bestaan in het heden.

Tijd kan misschien worden gemeten op het moment dat het door het nu flitst, maar er is geen objectieve manier om deze duur te bepalen.Wellicht kan tijd dan worden gemeten aan de hand van hemellichamen, zoals we dat als doen wanneer we het over maanden, dagen en uren hebben.8 Dit kan volgens Augustinus ook niet: “for when a body is moved, it is by time that I measure the duration of the movement, from the moment it begins until it ends. […] I am unable to measure except for the period from the beginning to the end of my observation.”9 Aan het eind van Augustinus’ gedachtegang over het meten van tijd komt hij tot een conclusie:“I therefore see that time is some kind of extension.”10 Maar wat voor uitstrekking is

dit precies? We kunnen tijd niet meten, maar we kunnen wel zeggen dat iets ‘kort’ of ‘lang’ duurt. We ervaren tijd in onze geest. Daarom zegt Augustinus dat tijd plaatsvindt in onze ziel. Onze ziel ervaart zowel verleden, in de vorm van herinneringen; de toekomst, in de vorm van verwachtingen; en het heden. Dit heden snelt in een flits voorbij aan de ziel, maar de ziel leeft in een oneindig heden. Onze geest is daarbij het meetinstrument dat we gebruiken om deze tijd toch op een of andere manier te meten. “The impression which passing events make upon you abides when they are gone. That present consciousness is what I am measuring...”.11

De conclusie van Augustinus is dat het om een uitstrekking van de ziel gaat, die zich in een oneindig heden bevindt.

Deze tijd meten we met onze geest en hiermee herinneren we ons het verleden en verwachten we ook een toekomst.

De tijd zelf is een van de vele bewijzen die Augustinus geeft voor het bestaan van God. Daarmee behoort hij tot een groter geheel van filosofen en theologen die hebben geprobeerd hun visie hard te maken.

Time travel

Scientific theories in modern fiction It may be a surprise to some that the philosophy of time travel is a genuine academic subject within physics, especially in theoretical physics and quantum mechanics. Einstein’s theory of relativity from 1915 in particular has made the reality of time travel theoretically attainable. It suggests that by manipulation of spacetime, time travel is possible. This notion was not only common amongst Einstein’s peers: modern scientists are also researching the possibilities, as is illustrated by a publication in Classical and Quantum Gravity as recent as 2017. In this article, Canadian physicist Benjamin Tippett and American astronomer David Tsang have described how to build a real time machine.1 The notion of time travel is much older than modern science. It has lived inside the imagination of people for centuries. Myths, religious traditions, folklore and fables worldwide are all full of stories about time travel of some sort. For long, there were two popular traditions. In Asia especially, regular people would travel to mythical places where time passed at a different pace. Upon return back on earth, they would find themselves in the future. In Eurasian religious traditions from the first century BC onwards, stories began circulating about people who fell asleep and woke up hundreds of years later.2 This type of story remained popular well until the 19th century and was the subject of many famous works; such as Irving Washington’s

The concept of time travel by way of a machine was only popularized by the book The Time Machine in 1895, also written by Wells.3 These stories are not just about the means of time travel, but also deal with the experience of the people making the journey. That theme is still utilized in the 20th and 21st centuries and in the modern media that have since entered our lives – movies,TV and even popular songs.With the rise of modern science and the lack of successful time travel, producers and singers use scientific theories to portray what happens to their characters and their surroundings.

In this article, I would like to address the most popular of these theories and treat some of the most interesting examples.

The butterfly effect The most popular theories about time travel deal with the more general rule of causality, namely that everything has a cause and an effect. Theoretical physicists believe that small events can have large, widespread consequences.

Mathematician Edward Lorenz coined the ‘butterfly effect’ theory in 1969. Adopted by popular culture, it has become a metaphor for the existence of seemingly insignificant occurrences in the past, that, when changed, could ripple outward to vast changes in the future.4 The name of the theory was lent to the 2004 movie The Butterfly Effect, but features in many other movies, such Star Trek First Contact (1997). However, the most popular film franchise to depict this theory is Back to the Future.

Changing insignificant occurrences in the past could ripple outward to vast changes in the future The franchise is comprised of three movies, released between 1985 and 1990. It follows the adventures of high school student Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox) and his eccentric scientist friend, Dr. Emmett L. Brown– or ‘Doc’, as Marty calls him (played by Christopher Lloyd). The latter has converted a DeLorean car into a time machine.

Marty lands in a shed in his fictional hometown of Hill Valley on the evening of November 5th 1955. Only the following day does Marty alter the entire course of history, when he interrupts the event in which his parents would have met and fallen in love with each other.

Later, after he has successfully paired them, he returns to his own reality, that has tremendously changed due to his interference. Marty’s father George McFly, for example, used to be a docile and gullible man, domineered by his boss and former high school bully Biff Tannen. On top of that, his mother Lorraine used to be overweight and drunk and his siblings seemed to not be going anywhere in life, both working dead-end jobs. After Marty’s interference in his parents’ early romance in 1955, his family turns out happier, wealthier, more successful and confident when Marty returns to 1985.5 The grandfather paradox The ‘grandfather paradox’ is named after the easiest example by which to describe it: “If I go back in time and I kill my grandfather before my parent’s birth, how is it then possible that I still exist and go back in time?” It was alluded to for the first time in stories published in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Like the butterfly effect, the grandfather paradox

deals with many kinds of different inconsistencies caused by time travel. However, in modern media, it is utilized mainly to depict the endangering of a character’s existence by way of time travel.6 The grandfather paradox occurs for example in the earlier mentioned Back to the Future franchise. In the first movie, Marty has altered the course of time in such a way that his mother does not fall in love with his father. Disrupting his parents’ first meeting, they may never get together and they will never have children. Thus, Marty has endangered his own existence. A photograph that he has taken with him from the future of himself and his elder siblings exemplifies this danger: he, his brother and his sister gradually disappear from the photograph, meaning that the future is changing by his interference in 1955.7

If I go back in time and kill my grandfather, how is it possible that I still exist?

In the case of Marty McFly, the grandfather paradox is utilized by the authors to create tension and excitement for the viewers. In the more recent TV series Timeless (2016-2018) the consequences are much more emotionally charged.

In Timeless, a series of trips through time starts when criminal Garcia Flynn (played by Goran Višnjić) steals a time machine and travels to major events in the past to alter the course of American national history. A three-headed team, consisting of history professor Lucy Preston (played

by Abigail Spencer), U.S. Army Delta Force operative Wyatt Logan (played by Matt Lanter) and programmer Rufus Carlin (played by Malcolm Barrett) is put together by the government to stop Flynn.8 Their employers plead with them to let history occur as it has, fearing the complicated consequences if the past is changed. But this poses some moral and ethical matters more than once: do they have to let dozens of people perish to keep everything in the future the same? Or do they save them, with the danger that their own reality changes? From the first episode onwards, due to their own personal choices, but also their reactions to Flynn’s actions, history is altered, with incredibly emotional and personal consequences for the crew. For example, Lucy’s mother, who was initially suffering from lung cancer in the first episode, is healthy again after Lucy’s first trip to the Hindenburg disaster. On top of that, she appears to have a fiancé she does not know. But worst of all, her sister Amy no longer exists and nobody around her has ever known her.9

The do-over-principle and the time loop According to the ‘do-over principle’, we can go back in time to start over again with the foresight of what we have done wrong the first time around. The notion has been popularized by the classic Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol (1843). After having seen his fate on Christmas yet to come, the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, wakes up from a long slumber and changes his miserly ways.The principle is also used in many videogames, namely when your character dies and you get to do the level over again. Now that you know where the traps and dangers lie, you will probably do better.10 A lesser-known example is the Dutch song Tijdmachine, by Amsterdam-based rapper Dio.11 In his song, Dio sings that the wants to go back in time to alter both the past and the present that derives from it.

He looks back on his own personal history with a feeling of shame. The singer relates to his troubled character as a youngster and his consequentially deteriorated relationship with his mother, he deals with the absence of his father and his inability to successfully commit to his romantic partners in his adult life. Speaking from the present, he expresses his desire to go back to change things, because in doing so, he would firstly no longer have to look back on his actions and feel conflicted about them, and things would have secondly turned out better for him.12

The principle of doing things over in the past are featured in A Christmas Carol and many popular videogames But then in the final couplet, the singer confesses that he actually believes that travelling back in time will be to no avail. He comes to terms with his own humanity and sings that if he were to go back and could do everything again, he would still be the same person and therefore nothing would change: he would be the same troubled kid and be the pain in everybody’s backside. In fact, he thinks he would probably be even worse than he had already been. Therefore, it’s better to just try and make the best of the here and now.13 In story writing, an exaggerated version of the do-overprinciple is named a time loop or temporal loop. This

principle is often used as a plot device in which periods of time are repeated and re-experienced by the characters.

Often in the end of the story, the cycle of repetition is broken.14 The device has been adapted in movies like The Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and series like Russian Doll (2018).

The film Groundhog Day (1993) in particular has become something of a cult classic.The plot deals with Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray) who is staying in a small town in Pennsylvania to cover the festivities of the locally celebrated Groundhog Day. After doing so once, he keeps waking up on the same day. He does everything he can to break the loop, but to no avail. In the process, though, he becomes a better man and improves the lives of those around him.15

The Novikov self-consistency principle The complete opposite of the previous theories is the socalled ‘Novikov self-consistency principle’. According to this principle, time travel is self-sustaining, and a time traveler’s actions inevitably cause a future in which they travel to the past when, in fact, they have already been there. Instead of a time traveler’s actions rippling outward in time, all of history is already set in stone, including the effects of time travel. If this principle was true for Marty McFly, instead of interfering with his parents’ relationship, his actions would inevitably lead to them getting together and having him. The principle was developed by Russian physicist Igor Dmitriyevich Novikov in the 1980s.16 The theory lies at the basis of the time travel conducted in the movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent adventure (1989) and Outlander, stories that were developed around the same time as Novikov’s publication.

Outlander started as a book series in 1991, written by Diana Gabaldon, and was turned into a television series in 2014 by Ronald D. Moore for the network Starz. It is about the time travels of World War II nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall (played by Caitriona Balfe). On a trip to Scotland with her husband Frank Randall (played by Tobias Menzies) in 1945, she mystically travels back to the year 1743, during

the end of the Jacobite rising. In order to survive, she is forced to marry highlander Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan). Stifled by the mindset of the era and saddened by her longing for her original husband Frank, she tries to go back to her own time. She changes her mind, though, when she finds herself falling in love with Jamie.17

Dmitriyevich Novikov believed that history is already set in stone, including the effects of time travel Jamie and Claire become embroiled in the Jacobite Rebellion and because Claire knows the devastating outcome of the war for the Scottish people, together they try to alter the outcome. But they gradually find out that this is impossible.

Gabaldon throws Claire’s lack of knowledge into the mix here: although she frequently uses her knowledge to help Jamie and his clan, she has some shortcomings. During the rebellion there is so much plotting going about by third parties that they cannot possibly control everything. Thus, the outcome cannot be reversed.18 Gabaldon also demonstrates that the grandfather paradox can be solved with the self-consistency principle. In the story, Claire’s husband Frank is the great-great-great-grandson of one Mary Hawkins and Jack ‘Black Jack’ Randall. The latter becomes Claire and Jamie’s worst enemy in the 18th century. However, Claire is alarmed when she witnesses the developing relationship between Mary Hawkins and Black Jack’s younger brother Alexander Randall. She believes that the grandfather paradox will occur and Frank will never be born. Her sabotaging the relationship turns out to be to no avail, because everything was meant to happen the way it does: it turns out that Alexander and Mary had consummated their relationship before marriage, resulting in a pregnancy. Alexander dies before the birth, though, and on his deathbed, he gives his blessing to Mary’s marriage to his older brother Black Jack. Under those circumstances, Alexander and Mary’s child legally becomes Jack’s and he still is the assumed ancestor of Frank.19

Of course it remains to be seen whether time travel will be possible in the future and what the consequences will be.

For historians, whose core field of research is time in the end, the developments taking place in the field of physics will be interesting to watch. Until they make a breakthrough, it equally as beguiling to see how time travel will be portrayed in the media.

Two minutes to midnight

Environmentalism’s struggle against the clock The world shook in early august 1945 as the two most devastating weapons ever to have been used in warfare were dropped by airplane over the span of three days on Japanese cities to bring an end to the Second World War. The age of the atom had begun. During the early 20th century, the world came to understand the horrific potential of the industrialized state to destroy nature and human life on a scale and at a rate never before seen, but the atomic bomb surpassed even these in its potential for wreaking havoc. Now, with the single press of a button, the world could end. The world was gripped by this notion. Everyone was acutely aware that in the Cold War that followed the Second World War, they were living ‘in the shadow of the bomb’ and that their lives could end in a nuclear fire if international diplomatic relations ever deteriorated. Music, literature and films were filled with stories of life during and after the apocalypse. A group of scientists created the ‘doomsday clock’, meant to show humanity how close it was to destroying itself. Yet for all this attention, the truly destructive force used in August 1945, and had been in use for decades before, was not recognized: the engines that powered the airplane.

Not just airplane engines, but any engine or device dependent on fossil fuels to function contributes to this force, along with massive cattle farms, mass deforestation, and so on.While the nuclear bomb could destroy the world in an instant, the exploitation of these resources has a much slower, more insidious effect: that of environmental and climate change. The complex system that is the Earth has been increasingly disrupted by human activities over the last two centuries. Humanity’s innate need to survive and thrive coupled with her innate knack for innovation into the creation of inherently destructive systems. To satiate the needs of people in capitalist society, factories were built to create cheap goods. To power those factories, engines were developed which required fossil fuels to power them, and massive amounts of natural resources to create consumer

goods, such as clothing. People left the fields they had tilled for centuries to work in the cities as machines began replacing their labour as well, allowing but a few farmers to produce as much food as it took hundreds to do just a few decades before. Europeans conquered the world to feed the ever-hungry factories, which over time created the abundance the western world is now used to experiencing.1 All this activity has put a strain on the Earth’s resources, which began to dwindle ever further and ever faster as time went on. These effects did not go unnoticed. Indeed, already at the advent of the Industrial Revolution criticism was being levelled at the polluting effects of the primitive machines that powered it.2 These criticisms were the deep roots of what would become the global environmentalist movement. This movement’s history is what this article is concerned with: her desperate struggle against the clock to preserve the environment. In the conclusion, I will offer a verdict on the successes and failures of the movement.

The roots of environmentalism The world of the 19th and early 20th century was a rapidly changing one, especially in Europe. Within a short period of time, often a single generation, hundreds of thousands of people left the countryside for the city in search of work.

The cities swelled and at the same time deteriorated, as overpopulation and pollution from industry began affecting age-old buildings, such as blackening once-white walls with soot. The old centres became surrounded by districts for the new working-class. The urban rich were confronted with a city that was decaying and becoming ever-more separated from nature. They considered historic buildings and landmarks and, in Britain, common pastoral land that became encroached upon, to be the common heritage of the nation. Destruction of such relics of the old world which Europe was rushing away from would deprive future generations of their enjoyment of these features, and early environmentalists sought to prevent this.3 The

environmentalist movement would mostly remain exclusive to members of the upper and middle class until the second half of the 20th century, as the lower class was often in such poverty that it had more pressing concerns. The movement also remained confined to relatively local concerns – pressing government to change policy to preserve local monuments, buildings and wildlife. In the middle of the 20th century, however, the environmental movement would become a global one.4 The emergence of global awareness In the mid-20th century, concerns for global environmental collapse began to emerge as the global population grew at an alarming rate. The ideas of Thomas Malthus - who wrote in the early 19th century about the ratio of population to resources and the disastrous consequences of a population that grew too large, known as a Malthusian trap – received newfound attention from those concerned about this explosive growth. In the course of the 19th century, the world population had doubled, and continued to increase so that where there were one billion people worldwide in 1800, there were over two and a half billion people in 1950 and three billion by 1960.5 By all accounts, this was getting out of hand. Neo-Malthusians painted horrific images of a world famine unparalleled in human history, as the bulk of the world’s human population growth took place in the developing world, where the technology did not exist to produce the food required to support that growth.6 Influential neo-Malthusians argued that the West could not help the developing world, because any allocation of aid to starving people elsewhere were resources that the West could not use for its own population. Some even claimed the world was already doomed, and that the governments of the world should forcibly keep people from having more than two children, to keep the population from growing further.7 But there were no worldwide famines killing hundreds of millions. The population has more than doubled since the 1960s, and yet global access to wealth and, more importantly, food, seems to have improved. Indeed, there have been fewer famines in the half-century since the ‘60s than in the half-century before. Giant leaps in agricultural technology, now known as the Green Revolution, staved off a Malthusian crisis of global proportions. New strains of crops provided higher yields, and the liberal use of pesticides and artificial fertilizer doubled and tripled food production. Massive fields were created with single crops, known as monoculture. Huge amounts of water were required to feed all these crops, so dams were created wherever necessary, with massive irrigation systems to

distribute the captured water throughout the fields. This revolution allowed the human population to keep growing with little fear of global starvation.8 The Green Revolution did not come without a toll, however.The new technologies made mass scale agriculture the norm. Giant fields of single crops sprawling as far as the eye can see, in spaces where previously all sorts of flora grew. The pesticides that kept these crops safe from harm by poisoning insects inadvertently began affecting the fauna in the area as well, as creatures like birds ate the affected insects and were in turn eaten themselves, polluting their bodies and those of their predators. Fertilizer was often swept away by rain and transported by rivers into the sea, where its nutrients made it a hotbed for algae blooms.

These deprived large areas of the sea of oxygen, making them uninhabitable for aquatic life. Poor irrigation methods caused most of the water destined for crops to evaporate before arrival, leaving behind trace amounts of salt which over time increased the salinity of the soil, making it infertile.9 One of the more famous deleterious effects of large-scale irrigation projects is the disappearance of the Aral Sea. Once one of the largest lakes in the world, it was reduced in the latter half of the 20th century to four relatively small lakes surrounded by a desert. The problem of overpopulation was solved, but its solution created new issues, which would compound with the problems of industry to cause new problems and spark a new era of environmentalism.

From overpopulation to overconsumption Until about the 1950s machine industry was of relatively low impact on the world. While the machines were ‘dirtier’, polluting more than contemporary machines, which have filters and burn their fuel more efficiently, the total human output of, for example, greenhouse gasses, was limited.

Industry at this time was mainly limited to Europe, including the Soviet Union, as well as North America and Japan.10 Aside from this, consumption was relatively low. Farmers in Europe, for example, commonly used horses to plough their fields in the first half of the 20th century – there were hardly any tractors. In 1957, it was discovered that the CO2 content of the atmosphere had increased since the first time it was measured in 1890. At the time, this was considered a scientific curiosity. Indeed, the scientists who made this discovery were more interested in the potential for the slow increase of CO2 to advance the science of meteorology, than any concern for the global greenhouse effect.This was for good reason – the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere had risen from 297 parts per million (ppm) to 316 ppm in almost 70 years, a relatively small increase over a long period. In the early 21st century, there was about 395 ppm CO2 in the atmosphere. If we extrapolated from the difference between the 1890s and 1950s, this amount should not have been reached until the early 23rd century.11 This dramatic increase in CO2 in the atmosphere has a wide range of causes. To summarize, the world became globalized and commercialized. Gas prices plummeted in the mid-20th century, which made travel by car and airplane relatively cheap. Suddenly it was affordable for everyday citizens in industrialized countries to own and drive a car. Transportation by truck, rather than train, became

Airline travel became cheap enough for the middle-class to afford regular international holidays. While the prices were cheap, the environmental costs quickly began ramping up.

In the second and third world, industrialization was just beginning. Newly decolonized countries worldwide believed the best way to attain success was major investment into heavy industry, while they lacked the infrastructure to mitigate its environmental effects. It should not go without mention that these nations were encouraged to do so by the western institutions founded to help integrate them into the capitalist world system, such as the world bank.12 Similarly, the socialist countries, eager to prove their ideology’s inherent superiority over capitalism wished to outproduce the capitalist countries by developing heavy industry. The industrial society before 1950 demanded a slowly increasing amount of fuel and resources, but after 1950 the resource requirements soared exponentially.13 This development did not go long unnoticed. Atmospheric measurements continued to be carried out throughout the sixties, and this meteoric rise of pollutants in the atmosphere was noticed. This realization was what would put environmentalism prominently into the world’s social, cultural and political context until the present day. This development went coupled with a period of extreme unrest and a general questioning of authority throughout the world, and probably could not have taken place without it.The late sixties featured mass protests in Europe, the United States, and China, among other places. Some more violent than

others, as the young hoped to reform their society and do away with the old systems of authority. Racism (especially in the United States), militarism, patriarchy, and party rule (especially in China) were among the many topics that came under fire.14 The revelation that the enormous scale of human consumption in both agricultural and industrial products was destroying the environment was simply added to the list of things wrong with society that needed to be fixed.

The environmentalist flashpoint Environmentalist fervour was at its height in the early 1970s. In 1970, the first Earth Day was organized, featuring educational ‘teach-ins’, where people taught one another about the pollution created by industrialization, along with other forms of peaceful protest. Organisations such as Greenpeace were founded in the early 1970s to coordinate protest action as well as to lobby to put political pressure on governments and companies. The pressure began paying off, as governments acquiesced and created institutions to safeguard the environment. The United States was a forerunner in this respect, founding the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, which would drag American industry kicking and screaming into environmental awareness.15 Meanwhile, a team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was developing one of the most advanced computer models in history to that point: World3. This model was intended, somewhat ambitiously, to realistically emulate the Earth, in its entirety, to understand how the environment would develop in the near future.

The results were published in 1972, in the book The Limits to Growth, and they shocked the world. According to the World3 model, a global environmental catastrophe was almost inevitable. It found that the world’s carrying capacity was simply exceeded, and any further growth in either population or the economy would lead to a massive loss

of human life. In this, The Limits to Growth explored new territory, concerning itself not just with the problems of population growth, but also economic growth. A dramatic slowing of growth could delay the disaster by up to a century, according to the projection, but the only way to prevent it was by halting economic and population growth and investing considerable resources into cleaning up and preventing further pollution.16 The results shocked the world. While there had been scientific publications on the consequences of overpopulation and pollution of the environment, never before had a scientific model placed a credible expiry date on human society as we know it.17 The articulation of environmental collapse as an extremely likely doomsday, right next to the constant threat of imminent nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union, placed environmentalism at the top of politicians’ agendas worldwide. The fact that the vast majority of the scientific community supported the findings in Limits to Growth, at least to a degree, worked to strengthen the legitimacy of the crisis, and the necessity for governments and companies to work towards limiting pollution. Political parties with environmentalism as their key issue were founded. Many governments joined the United States in creating agencies tasked with the protection of the environment.18 Several issues were tackled during the latter half of the 20th century, including the growing hole in the ozone layer, the depletion of the planet’s (tropical) forests, the pollution of the atmosphere and bodies of water, and the alarming rate of extinction of species. By far the most successful of these efforts was reducing the depletion of the ozone layer.

Simply put, this layer keeps too much harmful ultraviolet solar radiation from reaching the Earth’s surface. In the 1970s, it was discovered that the ozone layer had been damaged to such an extent that a number of giant holes had formed. It turned out that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs),

used in items such as spray cans and refrigerators, were the culprits. The United States government was on the forefront when it came to combatting the use of CFCs and had banned their use in spray cans in the mid-‘70s, but it would take until the 1980s for global regulation to take over and compel industry worldwide to find substitutes for CFCs in its many applications. As CFC production dropped, the ozone layer stabilized, and it has been slowly growing again ever since.19 Calls for reducing deforestation, banning whaling, and combatting acid rain, to name a few, are other fights the environmentalism movement took on. Indeed, it seemed the world, at least the capitalist first world, was beginning to head in the right direction.

no decent alternatives for the crisis of overconsumption.

It is quite commonplace that activists who wish to change organisations from within become, consciously or not, more aligned with the interests of that organisation than their original ideology, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as the “iron will of oligarchy”. This process happened to the environmentalist movement as well.20 Institutionalization of the environmental movement had solved the ozone layer problem. Whaling was on a decline, and efforts were made to decrease atmospheric pollution and acid rain. But deforestation had not been halted, and neither had the rapid extinction rate of endangered species, let alone the crisis of overconsumption.

The failure of the movement The environmental movement became institutionalized within the industrial and political spheres, so that it could effectively bring about change, but this came with two major downsides. Firstly, the position of environmentalist agents within governments and companies meant they had to distance themselves from the radical protestors that had granted them their influence and credibility in the first place.

The environmental movement soon found itself becoming split between a majority willing to cooperate with the capitalist institutions that had a strong interest in remaining unregulated, and a minority, who refused, and so rejected taking a position of power to effect real change. Secondly, being institutionalized meant working with organizations who had no interest in limiting their growth beyond token efforts towards developing sustainable energy and reducing pollution. An actual (unilateral) transition to zero-growth would, for a government, mean disaster on the international political field, and for a company mean loss in market share, followed by loss of investor interest and possibly bankruptcy.

The global shift to neoliberalism in the 1980s did not help matters either, as politicians, convinced that governments had imposed so many regulations on industry that it had caused a recession, opted to deregulate their economies and allow market forces more control over the course of the economy. This also meant governments, to varying degrees, released control of environmental protection to the invisible hand of the market.21 Either out of genuine concern, or fear for loss of face towards their consumers, many companies did indeed invest in the development and implementation of (relatively) environmentally friendly technologies, and continue to do so. Indeed, consumer pressure has demanded and caused some important steps to be taken in the right direction, regarding the development and implementation of environmentally friendly technologies. Many of these technologies are marketed as luxury products, however, and unaffordable for the poor majority. Furthermore, for all the environmentally friendly developments that have been made, the underlying problems are the same. Methods that reduce pollution of a production process by 10% do not result in 10% less pollution, because production is continuously ramped up as the global consumer capitalist society continues to demand more and more. This increasing demand is goaded

on by investors demanding ever increasing returns on their investments. Levels of pollution often stay the same, if not continue to rise.22 In situations such as these, referred to as ‘market failures’ in economics, governments can often play an important role by forcing companies and consumers to behave a certain way for the greater good of the collective. Indeed, governments have the ability to impose the anti-pollution and anti-growth legislation required to reverse the effects of global capitalism’s industrial pollution. They even draft and sign international agreements and hold international conferences where they pledge to reduce the use of fossil fuels and emission of greenhouse gases. However, when it comes to implementing such pledges, hardly any follow through. That is because governments themselves are embroiled in the capitalist world system just as much as companies and consumers are. States are encouraged to compete with one another to attract companies and thus capital, to increase the wealth of their citizens – although this wealth has a tendency to end up at the upper strata of society. Capitalist society is simply not equipped to solve the problems posed by environmental collapse.

It has been said that it is easier to imagine an end to the world than an end to capitalism. Environmentalists willing to work with the institutions of capitalist society have led to impressive progress in technologies capable of alleviating the effects of industrial and agricultural production on the global environment. But all this progress is for naught if rampant consumerism cannot be constrained. With the recent publication of an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on the effects of global warming, it has become clearer than ever that the current global consumption pattern is untenable. Trying to work within the system that demands this pattern has yielded practically no results in over 50 years. While some crises have been averted, others continue to grow more serious.

Mass consumerism is not a human necessity. Society in the last several decades appears unwilling or incapable of imagining a different world, one where people produce and purchase whatever they need, instead of whatever they want. Imagining and then creating such a world might be our best solution to the environmental crisis. There are but a scant few minutes to midnight.
