Redactioneel Het nieuwe nummer van Codex is er eindelijk! Dit nummer zit propvol artikelen over ons thema: lucht. Het is een ambigu element, wellicht veel meer dan de andere elementen. We lopen met gemak door lucht, maar toch zit er in de lucht immense kracht. Stormen en tornado’s kunnen gebouwen volledig vernielen en zelfs rustige wind laat schepen de wereld rond zeilen en windmolens elektriciteit opwekken. De atmosfeer houdt alle warmte van de zon vast. Zonder de atmosfeer zouden wij allemaal doodvriezen, maar het is juist de wind die een winterdag zo ijzig koud maakt. De lucht brengt ons zuurstof, maar bevat ook ziektekiemen die ons kunnen doden. Lucht, zoals de andere elementen, is voedzaam en geeft leven, maar wanneer het beweegt kan het verschrikkelijk gevaarlijk zijn.

De artikelen in dit nummer gaan veelal over lucht in verscheidene vormen. Van de concrete interpretatie, zoals gastschrijver Laura’s artikel over een bommenwerper uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog die in het IJsselmeer is neergestort, tot de meer abstracte interpretatie, zoals Jermaine’s artikel over de rol van vrouwen in Maoistisch China. De relatie tussen mens en hemel wordt in twee artikelen besproken: Amanda schrijft over het werkelijk bestaan van de Toren van Babel, de biblische poging om de hemel te bereiken, en Ellen doet onderzoek naar de wijze waarop Vroegmoderne Nederlanders dachten over onweer. Claire werpt een kritische blik op de nieuwe Netflix-film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind en de redactie heeft de promotie bijgewoond van Caro Verbeek, een kunsthistoricus die onderzoek doet naar de geschiedenis van geur.We hebben deze keer vier gastschrijvers, wat naar mijn weten een record is voor Codex! Verspreid over het nummer is een artikelserie over de winden op zee en hoe deze de menselijke ontwikkeling hebben beinvloed.

Dit nummer is mijn laatste als hoofdredacteur van Codex. Ik zal verder gaan als een reguliere redacteur zodat ik mij kan richten op mijn studie. Ellen van Heteren zal het stokje van mij overnemen vanaf het volgend nummer. Ook al vind ik het fijn om meer tijd te hebben voor andere dingen, ik heb erg genoten en veel geleerd van mijn tijd als hoofdredacteur.

The new issue of CODEX is finally here! This issue is full of content relating to our theme: Air. An ambiguous element, perhaps more so than the other three. We walk through air easily: it’s a breeze. And yet, the air harbours immense power. Tornadoes and storms can destroy buildings and even regular winds can send ships sailing across the world or turn the windmills that helped create the Dutch landscape we all know. The atmosphere keeps in all the warmth the Earth receives from the sun.

Without it, we would freeze to death, but a breeze is never welcome in winter. We need air to bring us oxygen, but dangerous microbes inhabit it that have the potential to kill. Air, much like the other elements, is a nourishing, life-giving element, but when in motion it can be extremely dangerous.

In this issue, we have a ton of articles related to air in its various forms. From the concrete, such as guest-writer Laura’s about a World War 2 bomber that crashed in the IJsselmeer, to the more abstract, such as Jermaine’s article about women’s role in Maoist China. The relationship between man and heaven is explored in two articles: Amanda has written about the historical existence of a Tower of Babel, the biblical attempt to reach heaven, and Ellen researched Dutch attitudes towards storms in the early modern era. Claire has written a review for the film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, which was recently released on Netflix, and the editors attended the promotion of Caro Verbeek, an art historian researching the history of scent. We have four guest writers this time, a bit of a record for us.Woven through the entire issue is an article series on the various prevailing oceanic winds in the world, and how they affected human development.

This issue is the last one with me at the helm. I will be stepping down as chief editor to focus on my studies. Ellen van Heteren will be assuming that particular role starting from the next issue. I am happy to have more time for other things, but I enjoyed and learnt from my time as chief editor.

angzamerhand komt Nederland uit corona-lockdown en gaan instituties, waaronder musea (hoera!), weer open. Een aantal tentoonstellingen is al weer van start gegaan en anderen zijn verlengd. Hoewel het leuk is om weer er op uit te gaan, blijft het belangrijk om gezond en veilig thuis te blijven. Vandaar dat wij ook weer wat thema-gerelateerd lees-, luister- en speelvoer voorstellen.

God in de wolken, mensen op de grond I

n 1752 heeft Benjamin Franklin de bliksemafleider uitgevonden. Deze ontdekking verspreidde zich al vroeg naar de Nederlanden, waar het door zowel natuurkundigen als geestelijken in gebruik werd genomen.1 Snel werden er boekjes en pamfletten verspreid om zo veel mogelijk mensen te informeren over de drijfveer achter bliksem en donder: ‘eene stoffe, die men Electriciteit noemt’.2 Onweer werd de eeuwen daarvoor gezien als een manifestatie van de macht van God; dit veranderde dan ook niet meteen met de ontdekking van elektriciteit. God werd slechts een andere rol toegewezen, een ontwikkeling die zich ook had voorgedaan in de voorafgaande eeuwen.3 In de zeventiende eeuw en de eeuwen daarvoor werden onweersstormen vaak gezien als een teken van Gods toorn: mensen hadden zijn wetten verbroken of hem teleurgesteld en het onweer met alle bijkomende schade was hun straf. Het gebeurde nog wel eens dat tijdens een onweersstorm huizen in de brand vlogen of gebouwen instortten. Bijzonder hevig onweer werd ook wel eens geïnterpreteerd als een teken van de komst van de dag des oordeels. Storm, bliksem en donder hadden daardoor een hele negatieve connotatie. Gedurende de achttiende en negentiende eeuw kreeg onweer echter een meer positieve bijbetekenis; die van een zuivering.

Men dacht dat onweer een einde bracht aan hitte, de lucht filterde en een verloren evenwicht herstelde. Dat God had gekozen om dit te doen met een gevaarlijke onweersstorm, was slechts een herinnering voor zijn onderdanen aan zijn macht.

Het idee dat onweer evenwicht herstelde werd ondersteund door opkomende natuurkundige theorieën over elektriciteit.

De veranderende perceptie van onweer en zijn betekenis ging gepaard met een verschuiving in het genre waarin men schreef over dit verschijnsel.

Waar men voorheen bang was voor onweer en dacht dat God hen daarmee bestrafte, werden gedichten geschreven om de macht van God en het gevaar van de storm te benadrukken. Enkele voorbeelden hiervan zijn de werken Gods oordelen over Nederland en Gods gerichten op aarde. Beide zijn geschreven naar aanleiding van een storm die de (onbekende) auteurs schrik heeft aangejaagd.

In Gods oordelen over Nederland komt duidelijk

(I) Schoolplaat uit 1851

naar voren hoe de schrijver denkt over het ontstaan van onweer: ‘Als uw wraak door ’t overtreden, en last’ren van uw wet de strenge vierschaar spant, en uwe toorn in ernst, en hevigheid ontbrant [...] Dan kan de Donder al ’t geschaapene vernielen.’4 De dichter van Gods gerichten op aarde richt zich rechtstreeks tot zijn lezers en zegt: ‘Ontfluit uwe ooren, doch vooral uw’ hert, om, wys en welbezonnen, met mij te zoeken naar de bronnen van zulk een bitter ongeval, en, met ze aan onze zij’ te weeren, den voortgang van het kwaad te keeren.’5

Hoor, hoor, wat buld’rende geluiden vervullen lucht en ooren!6 Minstens twee overleveringen geven een beschrijving van een zware onweersstorm op 1 augustus 1674, de eerste uit Amsterdam en de tweede uit Zaandam. De beschrijving van de storm uit Amsterdam gaat vooral in op de schade die het tot gevolg had, zoals een boom, ‘staende op de Nieuwe Markt dik ontent 5 a 6 voet, is uyt de gront opgenomen, en 180 voet uyt zijn plaets gevoert’.7 Daarnaast zijn graanmolens met de grond gelijk gemaakt, is een schip weggewaaid en zijn andere omgevallen en is er schade aan de ramen en daken van huizen. De kroniek uit Zaandam geeft een veel levendiger beschrijving, niet enkel van de storm en de schade, maar ook de reactie die de inwoners van Zaandam hadden op het onweer: ‘Des savons omtrend half agt verwekte god schielijk sulken ijsselijken onweder, met donder enblixem verscheurende wint, stortende plasregen en hagelsteenen, met sulk vervaarlijk gedruijs dat veel niet anders dagte of het was den

jongstendag [= de dag des oordeels]. klijne kinderen vielen haar ouders om de hals, bekenden haar sonden en beloofden niet meer ongehoorsaam te sijn. [...] losse dronkebroers [...] bekennende hare sonden in het volle geselschap en riepen om vergevinge.’8

‘een schriekelijcke onderder en blixem, vermengt met gruwelijke stormwint’9 Men begon anders te schrijven over onweer toen het een meer positief karakter kreeg. Omdat nieuwe ideeën over de aard van onweer en de boodschap die het droeg niet van de een op andere dag bekend waren bij iedereen, werden er informatieve pamfletten en boekjes gedrukt (onder andere door de Maatschappij tot nut van ’t algemeen, een vereniging die zich inzette om het volk intellectueel en cultureel te verreiken door het beschikbaar maken van onderwijs in allerlei vormen10) om de lezer te leren over het ontstaan van onweer, om zo ‘tot wegruiming van alle redeloze vrees, en ter opwekking van dankbaren eerbied voor dat Opperwezen, dat zelf zijne donders het menschdom beweldadigd’.11 Dit stukje tekst komt uit een pamflet getiteld Zamenspraak tusschen een landheer en zijn’ tuinman, over het onweder waarin de fictieve landheer uitlegt waarom niemand bang dient te zijn voor het onweer. Een stukje van zijn redenering luidt als volgt: ‘wat herstelt dat alles beter dan het onweder van donder en bliksem, verzeld van wind en regenvlagen, welke, als zoo vele bezems der natuur, de lucht schoon vegen; terwijl de bliksem het verloren evenwigt herstelt, en schadelijke dampen verbrant!’12 Dat God onweer stuurt om zijn onderdanen te straffen, gelooft deze landheer niets van: ‘Dat God zijne magt toont is waar; docht dat hij van gramschap [= toorn] dondert, gelijkt immers nergens na! [...] God dondert door liefde en vaderlijke zorg voor het menschdom.’13 De landheer vervolgt met een uitleg van de werking van het onweer op basis van een verstoord evenwicht in de hoeveelheid elektriciteit die zich bevindt in alle dingen, die de bliksem weer herstelt. Hoewel deze benadering werd ondersteund door de uitkomst van vele experimenten, is God nog steeds een belangrijk onderdeel van de verklaring.

‘Het is niet alleen geene zonde,’ vervolgt de landheer, ‘maar zelfs pligt, dat wij het onderzoeken! En dat waarom? Om dat dit onderzoek ons altijd Gods wijsheid en almagt nog meer leert bewonderen’.14 De stijl van dit werkje is aangepast op een breed publiek dat niets afweet van deze nieuwe ideeën

Er verschenen ook uitgebreidere werken op de markt, boeken die aan een meer geïnteresseerde lezer uitlegden hoe onweer (natuurkundig) ontstond en, na de uitvinding van de bliksemafleider, hoe men zich kon beschermen tegen zijn gevaren.15 Naarmate de angst voor onweer plaatsmaakte voor een toenemend begrip, veranderde het genre waarin onweer werd beschreven. Kunstige gedichten die vol ontzag de macht van God benadrukten maakten plaats voor het soort tekst dat de lezer informeerde over onweer en een hele nieuwe bewondering voor God introduceerde. Kortom, toen de relatie tussen mens en onweer veranderde, veranderde ook de relatie tussen mens en God.

Winds of the World The Atlantic Ocean

T

he ease of travelling over land depends a lot on what kind of terrain you might encounter; walking, riding, or driving across a flat plain is much easier and quicker than in rough mountains.Travelling over the seas is much of the same, except the terrain is not decided by the shape of the land, but the shape of the winds. Dayto-day winds can be unpredictable, but over the span of months and years, clear and reliable patterns emerge.

These patterns had massive effects on how ships, especially those with sails, could travel.This series of articles provides several brief examples.

The global wind pattern can roughly be divided into six bands of prevailing winds. In a wide band along the equator, winds (known as the trade winds) often blow towards the equator from east to west, while farther from the equator, roughly starting from the latitude of Morocco in the Northern hemisphere and Argentina in the Southern hemisphere, the prevailing winds (known as the westerlies) blow away from the equator from west, to east.

These opposing wind directions create a cycle, known as a gyre. Air reliably moves from the north coast of Africa across the Atlantic Ocean towards the Caribbean. From there, it moves farther north along the coast of North America and then east again, until it reaches Western Europe.The Atlantic has another gyre south of the equator, where the exact same process takes place: wind blows from West Africa towards South America, down along its coast, and then back towards Africa.1 These winds were amazingly beneficial to Western Europen empires, Spain and Portugal especially, because they could easily use them to travel to the New World.

In fact, following the prevailing wind patterns from Spain to the Caribbean, it seems inevitable that a conquistador such as Columbus would land on the island Hispaniola before anyplace else in the New World: The winds flow almost directly towards it. Soon after, when colonization of the New World was well underway, the ease of access to the Caribbean from Europe clearly explain the economic importance of that region. The prevailing winds also made it cheap and easy for Europeans to purchase enslaved Africans and transport them to plantations in the New World.2

Due to the reliability of the trade winds and westerlies throughout the year, trade across the Atlantic could take place at virtually any point of the year. Still, other factors played a role in the rhythm of the Atlantic, such as the timing of harvests and the migration of marine animals. For example, in northern summers, when whales returned to the North Atlantic from their breeding grounds around the equator, many sailors found employment on whaling boats, leaving relatively few sailors for trade ships.3 This is unlike the Indian Ocean, where we will see that the rhythm of ocean activity was determined by the monsoons.

Natuurbescherming als koloniale onderneming Natuurbeheer in Nederlands-Indië, 1850-1940

et het kolonialisme kwamen de Europeanen niet alleen in contact met nieuwe economische mogelijkheden, maar ook met nieuwe natuur in overvloed. De interventies van de Europese machthebbers schaadde deze nog veelal onaangetaste natuur, en in een korte periode konden de Europeanen zien hoe de natuur door hun eigen toedoen verslechterde. Sommige historici zeggen dan ook dat het begin van milieubewustzijn en de start van de milieubeweging getraceerd kunnen worden naar het Europese kolonialisme.1 Nederland verkreeg met het kolonialisme vanaf de zeventiende eeuw een machtspositie in Nederlands-Indië, en deze macht breidde zich eind negentiende en begin twintigste eeuw uit.2 Toen werden er ook regels opgesteld waarmee de natuur in het gebied beschermd moest worden.

Academici die onderzoek hebben gedaan naar het natuurbeheer in Nederlands-Indië lijken het erover eens dat er meer natuur is overgebleven dan waarschijnlijk het geval zou zijn geweest zonder het natuurbeheer.3 Toch is er in de historiografie ook een discussie ontstaan over de interpretatie van het natuurbeheer. Peter Boomgaard karakteriseert het natuurbeheer van Nederlands-Indië als koloniaal omdat de Nederlandse machthebbers in Indië ‘vreemde’ natuur beschermden. Het natuurbeheer werd gevormd naar hun eigen idee van natuur, waarbij het ging om wildernis zonder menselijke inwoners.4 Paul Jepson en Robert Whittaker zetten zich expliciet af tegen de interpretatie van Boomgaard en zien het natuurbeheer in Nederlands-Indië als een uiting van de internationale beweging voor natuurbehoud. Volgens Jepson en Whittaker was het natuurbeheer in Nederlands-Indië niet koloniaal omdat het niet zorgde voor onderdrukking van de inheemse bevolking en omdat de Nederlandse staat handelde uit morele verantwoordelijkheid met het oprechte doel de natuur te beschermen.5 Flora De eerste pogingen tot een gecentraliseerde natuurbescherming door de staat in Nederlands-Indië vonden plaats in de eerste helft van de negentiende

eeuw, maar deze waren onsuccesvol.6 Dit veranderde in 1865 met de oprichting van een Bosbeheer door de overheid in Nederlands-Indië, dat vooral moest zorgen voor een duurzame exploitatie van de teakbossen op Java. Bij de overheid in Nederlands-Indië was er namelijk angst voor het ontstaan van een tekort aan teakhout in de nabije toekomst. Vanaf 1865 tot ongeveer 1890 was het Bosbeheer bezig met het verkrijgen van gezag over steeds meer bossen en met het mogelijk maken van een efficiënt beheer van de bossen door het opleiden van personeel en het opzetten van een wettelijk kader.7

De Nederlandse staat handelde uit morele verantwoordelijkheid.

Daarnaast waren er in Nederlands-Indië zorgen over de hydrologische problemen die zouden optreden als gevolg van ontbossing. Sinds de jaren 1840 hadden wetenschappers en ambtenaren de machthebbers van Nederlands-Indië gewaarschuwd dat ontbossing op heuvels een groot probleem aan het worden was, aangezien het zorgde voor een afname van irrigatiewater en de kans op overstromingen deed toenemen. Hierdoor ging het Bosbeheer zich naast de teakbossen ook steeds

11 Nica de Korte meer focussen op wildhoutbossen en werden er vanaf 1890 ook reservaten van deze bossen gerealiseerd. In de reservaten van wildhoutbossen was kappen geheel verboden, in tegenstelling tot de teakbossen waarin duurzame productie onder toezicht van het Bosbeheer wel was toegestaan.8 Vanaf 1916 had de gouverneur-generaal van NederlandsIndië de mogelijkheid om gebieden de status van een natuurreservaat te geven, als dit vanuit een esthetisch of wetenschappelijk oogpunt gewenst was. In de daaropvolgende jaren nam het aantal natuurreservaten in de kolonie toe.9 In totaal richtte de gouverneur-generaal drieëndertig natuurreservaten op. De toename in het aantal natuurreservaten zette zich bovendien voort tot aan de dekolonisatie, en in totaal werden er ongeveer 120 natuurreservaten in het leven geroepen die bij elkaar ongeveer 2,5 miljoen hectare omvatten.10 Fauna Gelijktijdig met deze regels voor de bescherming van flora werden er in Nederlands-Indië besluiten genomen over de wettelijke bescherming van fauna. In 1909 werd er een ordonnantie gerealiseerd die niet alleen plantensoorten

maar ook diersoorten in het wild beschermde.11 Er werd veel zoölogisch onderzoek in de gehele archipel gedaan om een lijst op te stellen met diersoorten die wel en niet beschermd zouden moeten worden. Om deze reden duurde het twintig jaar om de ordonnantie te maken voordat zij in de praktijk kon worden gebracht.

Uiteindelijk werd er besloten om de zoogdieren en vogels die gunstig waren en nut hadden voor de samenleving in Nederlands-Indië wettelijk te beschermen; hierbij ging het bijvoorbeeld om vogelsoorten die belangrijk waren voor de landbouw. Veel diersoorten werden echter uitgesloten van bescherming omdat zij werden geclassificeerd als een dier met nadelige gevolgen voor de samenleving.Veel wilde dieren zoals de tijger en alle aapsoorten vielen hieronder.

De ordonnantie had daardoor niet veel effect.12 In 1924 werd de ordonnantie herzien, waarbij er meer diersoorten werden beschermd.13

Het koloniale natuurbeheer beschermde de flora en fauna door de inheemse mensen uit te sluiten In de jaren 1930 werden de laatste besluiten genomen binnen het natuurbeheer in Nederlands-Indië. Deze moesten dienen om het wettelijke kader voor natuurbescherming te verbeteren. In 1931 kwam er een ordonnantie die de dierenbescherming verder uitbreidde en een totaal verbod op de export van dode of levende beschermde dieren realiseerde. In het jaar daarop werd er besloten dat er vanaf dat moment ook wildreservaten konden worden gerealiseerd, naast de natuurreservaten voor bossen. Als gevolg werden een aantal zeer grote reservaten opgericht waar enige mate van interventie door mensen was toegestaan, aangezien dat voor sommige diersoorten wenselijk was.14 Door het grote oppervlakte van de nieuwe natuurreservaten lukte het echter niet ze effectief te besturen. Door een tekort aan personeel voor het patrouilleren van de reservaten en de economische druk van depressie, oorlog en revolutie, was de instandhouding en naleving van de regels was op sommige momenten erg moeilijk of zelfs onmogelijk.15 In totaal zou de overheid in Nederlands-Indië vijfendertig reservaten voor wilde dieren realiseren.16

toe op de inheemse bevolking in de Europese koloniën.

Het idee ontstond dat inheemse volken en hun cultuur ook verloren konden gaan door het kolonialisme.17 De Zwitserse antropoloog Paul Sarasin was een belangrijke vertegenwoordiger van deze theorie en had rond 1900 wetenschappelijke expedities ondernomen in Ceylon en Nederlands-Indië. Sarasin was een voorstander van internationale natuurbescherming en hieronder verstond hij ook deze antropologische natuurbescherming.18 Hij bracht het idee van antropologische natuurbescherming en het realiseren van speciale reservaten voor inheemse groepen in de algemene discussies over natuurbescherming in Europa. Zulke reservaten zouden ervoor zorgen dat inheemse volken onaangetast bleven en niet zouden uitsterven. Dit was belangrijk omdat er werd gedacht dat de wetenschappelijke studie naar deze primitieve groepen kennis zou kunnen verwerven over de geschiedenis van het Europese ras.19 In Nederland kreeg het idee van het beschermen van inheemse groepen in de koloniën door middel van speciale parken ook aanhang. De antropoloog Hendrik Bijlmer speelde hierbij een grote rol. In 1938 formuleerde hij een plan voor de realisatie van een speciaal park voor inheemse volken in het hoogland van Nieuw-Guinea.

Tijdens expedities in de jaren 1920 en 1930 was Bijlmer namelijk in contact gekomen met de inheemse bevolking van dit land, en deze mensen deden hem qua uiterlijk en karakter erg lijken op Europeanen.20 Nederlands-Indië werd op het moment dat Bijlmer zijn idee formuleerde steeds meer geopend voor buitenlandse invloeden, wat hij zorgelijk vond. Omdat mensen in het hoogland van NieuwGuinea altijd in isolatie hadden geleefd en geen bedreiging voor het koloniale bestuur vormde, wilde Bijlmer een speciaal reservaat voor de groepen realiseren waarin ze geleidelijk blootgesteld konden worden aan buitenlandse invloeden, zodat hun cultuur beschermd bleef en kon worden bestudeerd door wetenschappers.21

Ambtenaren in Nederlands-Indië waren van mening dat de westerse invloeden niet zouden kunnen worden vertraagd en de christelijke gemeenschap in Nederland wilde het christendom meteen naar het gebied brengen. Bovendien werd het plan niet gesteund door het parlement en vestigde de uitbraak van de Tweede Wereldoorlog de aandacht op andere zaken.22

Hieruit blijkt dat ongeacht op welke manier je het natuurbeheer in Nederlands-Indië interpreteert, er geconcludeerd kan worden dat een paternalistische toon domineerde. De koloniale machthebbers bepaalden voor alle inheemse inwoners van de kolonie hoe er met de natuur om gegaan moest worden. Bovendien hebben de genoemde plannen voor het realiseren van het ‘people park’ aangetoond dat het natuurbeheer in NederlandsIndië verschilde van het natuurbeheer in westerse landen, aangezien inheemse groepen net als de natuur als bedreigd werden beschouwd en werd gedacht de ze behoefte hadden aan bescherming door middel van isolatie.

Women Hold up Half the Sky Gender Liberation in Maoist China

A

popular slogan during China’s ‘Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution’ (GPCR) was that “women hold up half the sky”, a phrase attributed to Mao Zedong that stressed the importance of women contributing to the process of socialist construction.1 The aforementioned Cultural Revolution is a controversial period in modern Chinese history: it is considered a decade of great destructive chaos by the contemporary Chinese Communist Party, yet Maoists consider the Cultural Revolution to be the highest stage of socialist construction reached by humanity thus far.2 Therefore, it would be interesting to explore how gender liberation took shape during the Cultural Revolution.

The issue of gender liberation, meaning the emancipation of those shackled by gender-based oppression, has always been a turbulent one among Chinese communists before and after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Within the Communist Party there were those who stressed its importance and those who did not. The latter insisted that simply introducing women to industrial labour would tear away the yoke of patriarchy.

Some cadres, experienced revolutionaries employed by the Party, were sympathetic towards men who wanted their wives confined to the household. Meanwhile, the feminist sympathizers within the Party argued that ideological education and struggling against the ‘backwardness’ of Chinese society, which was also present among the masses, should play just as much of an important role in women’s liberation as women’s mobilisation for production would.

Unfortunately, the civil war against the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang), and the Communist Party’s need for allies and support amongst the masses forced communists to settle for compromises with the patriarchal structures of Chinese society, which were especially present in the countryside.3 When the Chinese communists defeated the Kuomintang and established the PRC in 1949, they made it clear that the Chinese government aimed for the abolishment of the feudal system, “which held women in bondage”, and granting women “equal rights with men in political, economic, cultural, educational and social life”.4 The implementation of the 1950 ‘Marriage Law’ — which

outlawed prostitution, arranged marriage, child betrothal, and the possession of concubines — was intended to further gender equality. The new law stressed free marriage, free divorce, economic independence, and other notions that the majority of the Chinese population was unaccustomed to. While women who were dissatisfied in arranged marriages considered the ‘Marriage Law’ a great boon, a significant section of the male population were less receptive to it. Men retaliated against women who sought to liberate themselves from the patriarchal household, which led to rates of murder and suicide of women high enough that it caught the Communist Party’s attention. In order to prevent further escalation, the Party decided to compromise their feminist aims with the conservativemindedness of the Chinese male population, especially those from the countryside, by stressing collective stability rather than individual freedoms.5 The Chinese government initially campaigned for the mass mobilization of women into the labour force, which also included encouraging rural women to relocate to the cities, but these campaigns ended up being supplanted by campaigns advocating “women’s domestic duties and the importance of harmonious family life”. Later, they reemerged when China needed more labourers during the Great Leap Forward Movement of 1958.6 During the Great Leap Forward, women’s participation in agricultural work skyrocketed to the point that 90 percent of rural women were involved. Because women’s involvement in labour increased, many more women were entitled to work

15 Jermaine Kanhai The Great Leap Forward In 1958, the Chinese government launched the Great Leap Forward, a campaign that intended to push the Chinese nation into becoming an industrialized and developed country. During the Great Leap Forward, people’s communes were established throughout China. These were socialized plots of land in which self-sufficient cooperatives lived and worked together, sharing the fruits of their labour. In the communes, wages and money were replaced by a ‘work points system’. Determining the amount of points a person would receive was decided democratically, but usually there was an emphasis on productivity.This meant that ‘highly productive’ men usually received more work points than women.26 Unfortunately, a combined result of governmental mismanagement, natural disasters, and the Soviet Union withdrawing all its technical support vital to China’s industrialisation as a result of the Sino-Soviet Spit (1956-1966) led to famines and extremely low rates of production plaguing the Great Leap Forward’s early years. All of these factors contributed to the result of many deaths, estimated between 16.5 million and 45 million.27 Around this time, opposition within the Party sharpened. Party members criticized Mao for the mismanagement of the Great Leap Forward, the people’s communes, and the split with the Soviet Union. Concessions had to be made which altered China’s developmental trajectory, including permitting the presence of free markets albeit on a small scale, curbing further socialization of land, and introducing material incentives such as the bonus system.28 points, which increased their economic contribution to their respective households. In fact, women’s work points were increased during the Great Leap Forward from four to six per day to seven to eight points per day by 1960 — which was much closer to the daily amount of ten work points, which the average male worker earned.7 Around this same period, communalization and the socialization of domestic work challenged the rigid structures of the family unit. The rapid and chaotic establishment of collective dining-halls, nurseries, kindergartens, sewing centres, food-processing centres and old-age homes served the Party’s goal of breaking the barrier between household and social production.8 All these changes and reforms, however, were met with

opposition from both men and older women because the increase of work points and the undermining of the family unit compromised both the ‘patriarchal household’ and the authority of elders.9 Unfortunately, the Great Leap Forward backfired to the point of compromising the gains made and experienced by women. For instance, during the aftermath

16 of the Great Leap Forward, thousands of women from the countryside found themselves sold into wedlock, with men paying thousands of yuan for brides.10 Women’s Struggles during the Cultural Revolution The Cultural Revolution emphasized the ongoing class struggle, which led to various mass organizations that did not prioritize class struggle — including the Women’s Federation — being suspended.11 Despite how women’s issues became secondary, Chinese women experienced noteworthy progress in terms of gender equality. Women enjoyed a high labour force participation rate, and they experienced greater representation in higher educational institutions, more so than before the Cultural Revolution.

Scholars argue that the Cultural Revolution’s ten year period oversimplified women’s issues by equating the struggles of women with that of men — to the point that women were “rendered masculine” and that men were used as “the yardstick to evaluate women”, reinforced by such slogans as “Whatever men can do, women can do too”.12 Unlike the West, which had its second wave of feminism throughout the same period, sexual liberalization did not play a role in China. Sex and public displays of affection remained a taboo in the PRC. The Party’s sexual mores of that period consisted of their condemnation of masturbation, and active discouragement of premarital sex and adultery. Heterosexual intercourse between

a husband and his wife was considered to be the only legitimate form of sexual activity, and even then in moderation. The Party was also involved in the marital arrangements of its members, which means that the private matters of cadres concerning intimate relationships were of party concern. During the Cultural Revolution, the party not only became more involved but they also fostered “political criteria for mate selection”, stressing that cadres should seek partners with high political consciousness.13 The Cultural Revolution’s ‘Red Guards’, politically militant students and youth, were not fond of ‘sexual liberalism’ either. They attacked the existence of pornography and other obscene materials on grounds of being part of “decadent capitalist culture”.14 Arguably, the lack of sexual permissiveness among the Chinese masses, including its revolutionaries, could not be attributed to a perceived lack of revolutionary zeal but rather to conservative Chinese cultural attitudes. When American journalist Edgar Snow interviewed a vice-director of the Women’s and Children’s Health Administration of Beijing about premarital abstinence in 1965, she argued that women experienced a radical cultural shift that reduced the importance of their relation with men. Before the PRC, women had limited opportunities and were expected to marry men at a rather young age. In the decades following the PRC’s establishment, women became increasingly less dependent on men and this was also reflected in society’s expectation of women and men not marrying until their late twenties. Quoting the interviewed vice-director, “[...] young people

17 Jermaine Kanhai China’s Cultural Revolution The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, or the ‘Cultural Revolution’ for short, was a socio-political movement in China launched by Mao Zedong in 1966. Mao kickstarted the Cultural Revolution — rousing devout civilians among the Chinese peasantry, working class, and military — in a bid to consolidate the revolutionary fervour within China.

Mao’s “Little Red Book”, properly known as Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung (1964), was an important artefact throughout the Cultural Revolution, functioning as a tool to spread radical messages and values. He also encouraged young people from the cities to go to the countryside, aiding the peasantry in the development and consolidation of socialist politics.29 The Cultural Revolution was as a response to the fierce political power struggle within the Party. Mao and his political allies identified the presence of a ‘red bourgeoisie’, a pro-capitalist opposition within the Party, represented by his rivals such as Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping. The concessions made in the aftermath of the Great Leap Forward threatened the people’s communes while simultaneously restore social divisions between skilled and unskilled labour. Mao provided political support to the ‘Red Guards’, a paramilitary socio-political movement predominantly led by students and young people. This bottom-up mobilisation of the revolutionary youth aspired to engage with the masses while combating the anti-socialist elements present within Chinese society and the Party.30 “Politics in command” became the Cultural Revolution’s grand slogan among the Maoist cadre and politicized masses, stressing the fundamental supremacy of communist political consciousness and strategy over everything else31. Ultimately, despite whatever gains made during the Cultural Revolution, the socio-political movement came to a definitive end with the death of Mao Zedong in 1976, followed by the Party abolishing the people’s communes and revolutionary committees in the succeeding years.32

were disciplined by political belief and ideals of work for society. They did not live for pleasure alone.”15 Interestingly enough, both young men and women from the cities experienced a semblance of sexual liberalization through their interactions with the peasantry, who were less anxious about human intimacies.16 The interaction between peasants and young students whom Mao urged to move to the countryside was one of two worlds colliding. Urban yet strict sensibilities were met with rural yet surprisingly permissive sensibilities. This might be the case due to the Red Guards’ political hard-lined approach to both public and private matters having less of a hold on the countryside.

Lastly, it is important to acknowledge that women were far from excluded in the process of political participation during the Cultural Revolution.Thousands of young women were part of the Red Guards.17 Not only were these female Red Guards involved in the process of agitating the masses and spreading revolutionary messages, they were equally involved in the violent excesses committed by the Red Guards as a whole. in terms of dress and mannerisms, these young women were ‘masculinized’, effectively becoming men’s equals in the literal sense. Throughout both the countryside and the cities, women were encouraged in receiving basic military training and steeling themselves for military combat, whether to defend the country from future imperialist invasions or to wage revolutionary warfare domestically.18 Despite there being less female representation in the upper echelons of the Party, Jiang Qing, the last wife of Mao Zedong, played an important political role throughout the Cultural Revolution. Aside from overseeing Party affairs as part of the Central Political Bureau (Politburo), Jiang was heavily involved in the development of ‘revolutionary model operas’ — theatrical performances, recordings and movies that sought to embody the Cultural Revolution’s widespread revolutionary fervour and represent its political messages.19 Many instances of art, literature, films, operas, and ballets produced during the Cultural Revolution portrayed women in positions of leadership or as communist militant combatants who contributed to the revolutionary struggle before the PRC’s inception.20 All these instances indicate that, despite the challenges or questionable practices, women were far from being invisible and passive subjects, especially when it concerned bottom-up initiatives such as the Red Guards: women were active socio-political actors within various spheres of life — whether it concerned politics, labour or sexuality.

18 After the Cultural Revolution After the Cultural Revolution reached its premature conclusion, the Communist Party under the leadership of Deng Xiaopeng pushed China into becoming a modernized economic superpower by reforming the country’s socialist economy. Despite having liberated China from the ‘ten years of chaos’ that was the Cultural Revolution, the emancipation of women had not experienced as many leaps as one might expect from a modern country. In fact, gender equality declined after China’s Maoist era.

During the economic reform period, women — especially older women — experienced high unemployment. Their employment opportunities also decreased with the reduction of public sectors and the privatisation of the country’s economy. In 1997, “women accounted for only 39 percent of China’s workforce but nearly 61 percent of its laid-off workers”, which is a decrease of the proportion of female labour force from the late 1970s and 1980s.21 Gender discrimination at the institutional level concerning China’s educational system intensified. In others words, the proportional presence of female students in all three levels of educational institutions declined throughout this period. Scholars argue that this is the result of women’s involvements and contributions being valued less compared to that of their male counterparts.22 Additionally, sexual slavery, prostitution, and human trafficking has skyrocketed in more recent years. China’s

one-child policy, which the Party enforced from 1979 to 2015, contributed to a significant imbalance between the country’s male and female population. The persistent demand for brides in light of a dwindling female population has paved the way for the widespread re-emergence of forced marriages.23 China’s economic reforms that have shaped its contemporary market economy combined with the growing attitude towards women, especially women of childbearing age, being too economically burdensome among employers has pushed many women into illegal avenues, including prostitution. At present, women hailing from the countryside and who are relatively uneducated and unskilled comprise the bulk of the prostitution workforce. It is also worth mentioning that a small albeit growing number of university students offer themselves as mistresses to wealthy men, effectively becoming modernday concubines.24 All of this is a far cry from the days of the Cultural Revolution, in which marriage became less of a social priority and women were relatively safe from the conditions that led them being sold into either concubinage, prostitution, or slavery.25 Modern China’s female population has yet to reach the same amount of representation their male counterparts do when it comes to politics, education, and various forms of labour. Women’s rights and freedoms have improved since the founding of the PRC, but with the opening of liberal reforms, gender equality has declined significantly.

Winds of the World The Indian Ocean

T

he ease of travelling over land depends a lot on what kind of terrain you might encounter; walking, riding, or driving across a flat plain is much easier and quicker than in rough mountains.Travelling over the seas is much of the same, except the terrain is not decided by the shape of the land, but the shape of the winds. Dayto-day winds can be unpredictable, but over the span of months and years, clear and reliable patterns emerge.

These patterns had massive effects on how ships, especially those with sails, could travel.This series of articles provides several brief examples.

Trade across the Indian Ocean has been going on for millennia, far longer than trade across the Atlantic.A Roman guidebook from the second century CE, the Periplus Maris Erythraei, was written to introduce prospective traders to the intricate networks of the Indian Ocean, and traces of trade between the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia have been found, some as old as the beginnings of writing.1 Trade across this ocean has always been incredibly reliable thanks to the monsoon winds: winds that change direction between summer and winter. Unlike the Atlantic Ocean, where the wind moves in more or less the same directions in the same areas, Indian Ocean winds turn around completely twice a year. In January, wind generally blows from north to south, while in July it tends to blow from south to north.

The monsoons give the Indian Ocean trade an annual rhythm, one which traders were keenly aware of.

Guidebooks, such as the Periplus Maris Erythraei, listed the exact dates traders should plan to leave from one port to get to another before the monsoon changes. For example, travel from Muscat, Oman to Malabar, India, according to the Islamic trader Ibn Majid, should be done between the 20th of February and the 11th of April, because the winds are most favourable then. Travel outside of these dates could apparently be “suicidal” due to violent storms.2 The geography of the Indian Ocean meant that some trips could take over a year. For example, a sailor might wish to sail from East Africa to Myanmar. They would leave in the (northern) summer months to take advantage of the southern winds to reach the West coast of India, but by the time they arrive the winds would have turned. They would then sail down the coast of India and wait for the next summer, when they can continue their journey to

the north-east, following favourable winds (see the map).

Even for smaller journeys, such as from Yemen to Gujarat (in Western India), sailors would stay in both ports for months, waiting for the monsoon to change.3 Long stays in ports throughout the Indian Ocean meant that coastal societies were quite metropolitan and led to immense cultural exchange. One result of this is the spread of Islam throughout the entire Indian Ocean. Islamic traders required mosques and religious leaders to practice their faith properly in ports they arrived in. Also, with its strict rules of conduct, Islam provided traders with a system of trust. A trader could be confident a buyer would hold to their agreement because a God they both believed in was watching. It became beneficial for people to convert to Islam, because it would facilitate trust between traders and manufacturers.This helped spread Islam to places such as Indonesia, now the country with the greatest number of Muslims in the world, and China. If traders did not have to stay in port for months on end before going on a next trip, such cultural exchanges would have been far less impactful.4

The Boy who Harnessed the Wind In 2001 brak in Malawi een zware hongersnood uit. Door langdurige droogte en ontbossing hadden veel boeren te kampen met misoogsten en lage opbrengsten. De graanprijzen stegen en chaos brak los. Naast de hongersnood probeerde men in Malawi een democratie te realiseren, maar het politiek bestel was nog doordrenkt met corruptie. De 113 minuten lange Netflix original film The boy who harnessed the wind, volgt de dertienjarige William Kamkwamba en zijn familie tijdens deze roerige periode. William is een intelligente jongen die een betere toekomst voor zijn ouders en zijn dorp probeert te creëren. Maar door de misoogst kan Williams vader het schoolgeld niet meer betalen en wordt William van school gestuurd. Maar William geeft niet op. Hij sluipt de schoolbibliotheek binnen om aan zijn project te werken: een windmolen om het water uit de plaatselijke put te kunnen pompen voor irrigatie.

De film is gebaseerd op een waargebeurd verhaal. William Kamkwamba heeft zijn dorp (Wimbe) gered van de hongersnood met zijn uitvinding. In de bibliotheek begon hij boeken te lezen, waaronder over energie. Hier vond hij het plan voor zijn windmolen. Zijn bouwwerk kon water omhoog pompen, wat gebruikt kon worden voor irrigatie.

De windmolen bestond uit schroot van de plaatselijke vuilnisbelt, een fiets en een dynamo. Met deze bescheiden materialen en onderdelen werden mensenlevens gered.1 Chiwetel Ejiofor, regisseur van de film, heeft het in een interview voor de Filmkrant over de inspiratie die K a m k w a m b a ’s verhaal hem gaf voor het maken van de film. ‘Ik was zeer geraakt door Williams reis naar volwassenheid.

Vooral zijn relatie tot het onderwijssysteem vond ik bijzonder.

te genieten sprak tot mijn verbeelding.’ Ejiofor was vooral geïnspireerd geraakt door Kamkwamba’s boek, The boy who harnessed the wind (2009). ‘Het boek ving niet alleen de economische crisis en de hongersnood heel goed, maar ook de hele culturele dynamiek van die regio. Dat vond ik erg mooi, heel eerlijk ook.’2 Kwamkwamba’s verhaal is inspirerend, vernieuwend en hoopvol. Er hangt dan ook een echte feelgood sfeer over de hele film. Dit lijkt tegenstrijdig gezien het onderwerp, maar zorgt wel voor een film die makkelijk wegkijkt en laagdrempeliger is.

Het is een kwestie van smaak of de kijker, gezien het onderwerp, de feelgood vibe kan waarderen of niet.

Kortom, als je meer wil leren over Malawi en een ontroerende film zoekt, die toch een happy ending heeft, is The boy who harnessed the wind iets voor jou. De uiteindelijke boodschap is zeer hoopvol: hoe weinig je ook hebt, of hoe slecht je huidige situatie er ook uitziet, je kan eruit komen en je leven (en dat van anderen) verbeteren.

De hongersnood van 2001 Malawi is tot op de dag van vandaag een van de armste landen ter wereld en wordt nog steeds geteisterd door misoogsten en hongersnoden. Uit onderzoek uit 2007 van de VN blijkt 65% van de Malawische bevolking onder de armoedegrens te leven, en 28% in extreme armoede. In 2005 en 2006 bestond 90% van de bevolking uit zelfvoorzienende boeren.3 Deze mensen zijn voornamelijk afhankelijk van neerslag om hun gewassen te laten groeien. Dit maakt de regio nog vatbaarder voor misoogsten en hongersnoden.

In 2001 slaagde de overheid van Malawi er niet in genoeg voedsel in te kopen om een hongersnood te voorkomen. Hulp van het buitenland kwam nauwelijks op gang, door het gedeelde idee dat corruptie van het Malawische bestuur voor een hongersnood gezorgd had. Het bestuur zou in 2001, onder leiding van president Muluzi, delen van de maïs voorraad verkocht hebben aan het buitenland, terwijl een hongersnood dreigde.4 Daarnaast zouden staatslieden eigenhandig mais of graan ingekocht hebben om het vervolgens tegen een hoge prijs te verkopen aan de verhongerende bevolking.5 Toen de overheid in januari 2002 besloot in te grijpen, waren zeven miljoen mensen, ongeveer tweederde van de bevolking, aan het verhongeren.6 Tussen januari en april in 2002, zijn er tussen de 500 en 1000 mensen overleden aan de honger of honger gerelateerde ziektes.7

The New Board Introduces Itself

W

e, Indy, Iris, and Dana, would like to introduce ourselves as the new board of Merlijn for the academic year 2020/2021. We started this year with much enthusiasm. All three of us are second years’ history students. When we began our studies at the VU, we all received a warm welcome from Merlijn. The corona crisis and the associated isolation did not diminish our enthusiasm for Merlijn: we were determined to make sure the association would continue to exist and be active, so its members could meet and hang out. Especially in these trying times, it is important to get to know one another and maintain contact – albeit online.

Our first events have definitely been a success! We started the year off during the introduction days, meeting the first years, and playing an online quiz to introduce them to Merlijn. Soon after, we had our first general assembly, where all members were invited to suggest activities and to discuss our plans for this year. We were able to organize a bowling event – keeping a safe distance of 1,5 meters of course – to meet each other in person. Most recently, we played an online version of the popular game ‘The Werewolves of Millers Hollow’, perhaps better known by the Dutch title Weerwolven. Online games were a great success, so we will be playing ‘Never have I ever’ and other games at our next activity on Thursday the 19th of November at 8 p.m.

We had hoped regulations relating to the coronavirus would be lessened by the beginning of the academic year,

but sadly this is not the case. Safety in the pandemic is our primary concern, so we intend to organize more social events online. It remains uncertain whether we can organize the annual foreign trip this year. This is usually Merlijn’s biggest and most popular event. We will continue to look at the possibilities and try to organize it, should the pandemic allow it. We hope the future will be better so that we can soon meet one another in person. Until that time, we hope to see you online!

Dat ruikt naar meer

Promoveren tijdens de pandemie

O

p 27 oktober is Caro Verbeek, geurhistoricus, gepromoveerd aan de VU. De promotie kon vanwege corona natuurlijk niet op de campus plaatsvinden, dus vond de verdediging van haar proefschrift online plaats in de vorm van een Zoom-meeting. Doordat de vergadering naar YouTube werd gestreamd, konden toch ruim 130 kijkers deze bijwonen, zo ook de redactie van Codex.

Het onderzoek van Caro Verbeek gaat over het reconstrueren van historische geuren, in het bijzonder in de context van kunst. Een kunstwerk zien is één ding; het ruiken is iets heel anders. In het verleden heeft geur een belangrijke rol in kunst gespeeld. Zo werd in de futuristische kunststroming van de vroege twintigste eeuw geloofd dat geur een essentieel onderdeel was van een kunstwerk en probeerde men, omdat men dacht dat geur een elektromagnetisch verschijnsel was, geur via radiogolven te vervoeren. Eén van Verbeeks bekendste projecten is een reconstructie van de geur van de slag bij Waterloo, te ruiken bij het Rijksmuseum: op basis van informatie over weersomstandigheden, de aanwezige materialen, mensen, dieren en neusgetuigenverslagen heeft Verbeek een recreatie gemaakt van wat soldaten bij de slag hebben geroken.

Voor wie nog nooit een promotie heeft bijgewoond, die gaat als volgt in haar werk. De promotiecommissie leest ter voorbereiding het proefschrift dat is geschreven door de promovendus. Tijdens de zogenaamde verdediging beantwoordt de promovendus kritische vragen van de promotiecommissie. Promoveren is een hele ceremoniële gebeurtenis: de aanwezige doctoren hebben hun toga aan en toestemming voor de verdediging wordt gevraagd en gegeven volgens een vaste formule.Vragen van de commissie worden gesteld ‘op gezag van de rector magnificus en krachtens mijn recht’ en worden beantwoord met ‘zeer geleerde opponent, bedankt voor uw vraag...’

Wegens de deftige vorm van de promotie zijn de ongemakken van online vergaderen erg opvallend. Menig maal moest bijvoorbeeld aan de sprekers worden gevraagd om zijn of haar microfoon van mute af te halen en het sprekersscherm versprong zo nu en dan naar de persoon die was vergeten de telefoon op stil te zetten. Daarnaast vond de verdediging niet plaats in een mooie zaal, maar thuis en op werkplekken; bijna iedereen had natuurlijk een boekenkast in de achtergrond. De serieuze sfeer van de verdediging werd ook gecontrasteerd door de live chat waar de kijkers, voornamelijk docenten en collega’s, hun lof uitspraken over de verdediging (en haar nagellak), uiteraard veelal in de vorm van woordgrappen over geur.

De promotie was ondanks de beperkingen van deze tijd een succes. Verbeek kreeg zeer positieve reacties over de inhoud en het belang van haar werk. Volgens haar is geur iets wat mensen opent naar elkaar, gesprekken op gang brengt en intimiteit brengt in een audiovisuele en nu digitale samenleving. Margriet Schavenmaker, artistiek directeur van het Amsterdam Museum en professor aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, complimenteerde: “U opent met uw proefschrift ons allemaal de ogen via de neus”. Het is dan ook geen verrassing dat Verbeek nu gepromoveerd is tot doctor en haar onderzoek zal voortzetten, onder andere binnen het project Odeuropa, over het Europese geurerfgoed. Zij zou ook graag een geurmuseum willen starten, waarin het erfgoed van Nederland met de neus te beleven is.

De toren van Babel

Kern van waarheid?

e Toren van Babel is één van de meest besproken verhalen in de Bijbel. Een toren zo hoog dat het tot in de hemel zou reiken, spreekt al eeuwen tot de verbeelding van het grote publiek. Christenen met een letterlijke kijk op de Bijbel zien de gebeurtenis dikwijls als het punt in de geschiedenis waarop de talenvariatie is ontstaan. In de populaire cultuur zien we deze opvatting onder andere weerspiegeld in de bekende uitdrukking ‘Babylonische spraakverwarring’. De meeste niet-christenen zullen dit verhaal afdoen als complete fictie, maar uit recentelijk archeologische onderzoek is gebleken dat deze conclusie wellicht te voorbarig is. Er zou misschien een kern van waarheid in het bekende Bijbelverhaal aanwezig zijn.

Het Bijbelse verhaal speelt zich af in de generaties direct na de zondevloed. De mens had zich na de vernietigende straf van God in een rap tempo vermenigvuldigd, waardoor ze de aarde opnieuw vulden. Deze nakomelingen van Noach migreerden vervolgens in oostelijke richting om zich te vestigen in het vruchtbare zuiden van Mesopotamië. Alle mensen spraken op dat moment dezelfde taal waardoor zij elkaar goed konden begrijpen en ook efficiënt met elkaar konden samenwerken. Vóór de zondevloed was de mens egoïstisch en schuwde er niet voor zijn zwakkere buren uit te buiten voor zijn eigen gewin. Na de zondevloed hield de mens er echter een tegenovergestelde filosofie op na: eenheid en samenwerking waren het belangrijkste streven; het individu had geen enkele waarde zonder de groep.

De kracht en efficiëntie die voortkwam uit deze eenheid maakte hen trots, waardoor zij zich al snel machtiger waanden dan God.1 Op een dag werd besloten een toren te bouwen die tot in de hemel zou reiken, om zo de mens gelijk te maken aan God, en tegelijkertijd om een centrale plaats voor de bevolking te creëren, zodat ze allen op één plek konden

blijven leven en niet verspreid zouden raken over de aarde zoals God dat had bedoeld.2 Dit symbool van hun goddelijke kracht, zoals ze het zagen, zou worden gebouwd in de vallei van het Land van Sinear. De bouw van de toren was echter tegen Gods wil in. Hij besloot hun arrogantie te bestraffen door een einde te maken aan hun vermogen om elkaar te begrijpen. Hij bracht het volk in verwarring door ze op te splitsen in zeventig verschillende naties en stammen, elk met een eigen taal. Doordat de arbeiders elkaar niet meer konden verstaan moest de bouw van de toren gestaakt worden. De groepen migreerden vervolgens in verschillende richtingen en verspreidden zich zo over de wereld.3 De letterlijke overtuiging dat de taalvariëteit van de wereld zijn oorsprong vindt in de Toren van Babel, zou volgens taalwetenschappers in strijd zijn met de bekende feiten over de oorsprong en geschiedenis van talen en wordt in de academische wereld daarom weggezet als pseudolinguïstiek.4 Hiernaast zijn zelfs in het oude testament, waarin het verhaal van de toren beschreven wordt, aanwijzingen te vinden tegen een letterlijke

interpretatie.5 In de Bijbelse inleiding van het verslag van de Toren van Babel, Genesis 11:1, staat geschreven dat iedereen op aarde dezelfde taal sprak, maar dit strookt niet met de beschrijving van de post-Noach wereld in Genesis 10:5, waar wordt beweerd dat de afstammelingen van Sem, Ham en Jafeth verschillende naties hebben voortgebracht, die elk een eigen taal hadden.6 Hoewel met hoge waarschijnlijkheid gesteld kan worden dat de taalvariëteit zijn herkomst niet vindt in de Toren van Babel, vermoeden academici dat andere aspecten van het verhaal wel op waarheid kunnen berusten. Hierbij is vooral het gebouw zelf een populair onderwerp: meerdere experts beweren namelijk te weten welk gebouw als inspiratie voor het bekende Bijbelverhaal gediend heeft.

Een gebouw zoals de Toren van Babel zou sporen achter hebben gelaten in de geschiedenis van de Babyloniërs. Er zijn daadwerkelijk verschillende Babylonische inscripties die naar het bestaan van een dergelijke toren wijzen. Een belangrijk bewijsstuk is een inscriptie waarin de Babylonische koning Nebukadnezar II, die leefde in de 6e eeuw voor Christus, de ruïnes van een toren vermeldde.7 Het tablet, ook wel de Toren van Babel stèle genoemd, geeft een Babylonische toren weer die bekend staat als een ‘ziggoerat’, een tempeltoren uit het oude Mesopotamië. Het tablet is een eeuw geleden gevonden, maar was lange tijd onderdeel van een privécollectie, waardoor het pas in 2011 voor het eerst werd onderzocht. De inscriptie bevestigt dat het gebouw een toren in Mesopotamische stijl was en het laat de zeven

lagen van het oude mega-gebouw zien.8 Na het ontcijferen van de tekst op het tablet raakte Dr. Andrew George, een expert in de geschiedenis van het oude Babylon, ervan overtuigd dat dit bepaalde aspecten van het Bijbelse verhaal bevestigde.9 Zo vermelde Nebukadnezar II in de inscriptie dat de oorspronkelijke toren door één van zijn voorgangers was gebouwd: ‘Een voormalige koning bouwde de Tempel van de Zeven Lichten van de Aarde (later naar verwezen als de Toren van Talen), maar hij voltooide de spits niet. Al sinds lange tijd, hadden de mensen hem, in totale spraakverwarring, verlaten. Later hadden aardbevingen en bliksem zijn zongedroogde leem verstrooid, waren de bakstenen van het omhulsel gebroken en lag de aarde van de binnenkant er in hopen omheen.’10 Deze beschrijving van spraakverwarring met een onafgemaakte toren als gevolg doet sterk denken aan het bekende Bijbelverhaal.

29 Amanda van Dord Archeologen zijn het over het algemeen eens dat de locatie van de toren zich bevond in de oude stad Babylon, een gebied dat tegenwoordig bekendstaat als Al Qasr, ongeveer 129 km ten zuiden van de Irakese hoofdstad Bagdad.11 De oorspronkelijke stad, die vermoedelijk gebouwd is in 2300 voor Christus, werd in 1595 voor Christus door de Hethieten geplunderd. Nebukadnezar II liet de stad in 612 voor Christus herbouwen en maakte het de hoofdstad van zijn rijk.Vervolgens droeg hij het volk op een ziggoerat te bouwen rondom de oorspronkelijke toren.12 Het zou hierbij gaan om de Etemenanki (Sumerisch: “Tempel van het fundament van hemel en aarde”) een tempel gewijd aan de Babylonische godheid Marduk. Volgens moderne geleerden, zoals hoogleraar religiewetenschappen Stephen L. Harris, zouden de auteurs van Genesis 11:1-9 geïnspireerd zijn door de Etemenanki en de onvolledige toren die beschreven stond in de Toren van Babel stele.13 Het Bijbelverhaal zou vermoedelijk beïnvloed zijn door deze bouwwerken tijdens het Babylonische ballingschap, een periode waarin het Joodse volk aanwezig was in Babylon na hun gedwongen deportatie uit Juda.14 Joden moeten de ziggoerat in deze periode gezien hebben. Een afgod vereren in een enorme tempel, en naar de hemel willen reiken: dat zullen de meeste Joden niet gewaardeerd hebben. Wellicht dat die weerzin tegen het gebouw heeft bijgedragen aan het ontstaan van het Bijbelse verhaal.

Kader Babylonische Ballingschap De Babylonische Ballingschap is de naam gegeven aan de deportatie en verbanning van de Joden uit het oude koninkrijk Juda naar Babylon door Koning Nebukadnezar II. Nadat de Babyloniërs aan het einde van de 7e eeuw voor Christus het Assyrische rijk veroverden, kwam het koninkrijk onder Babylonisch bewind te staan. Juda was op dat moment al bijna twee eeuwen een vazalstaat van het Assyrische rijk.

De ballingschap van de Joden – die voornamelijk de hogere klasse in de samenleving trof – vond plaats in drie golven van 597 tot 581 voor Christus en was het gevolg van de Judese opstanden tegen de Babylonische heerschappij. In de Bijbel wordt de ballingschap getypeerd als een straf voor de begane zonden van het volk van Juda. Zo hielden zij zich nog steeds bezig met afgoderij en werden de profetische waarschuwingen om niet tegen Babylon in opstand te komen genegeerd.

In Babylon hadden de Joden relatief veel vrijheid in hun doen en laten; zij mochten trouwen, landbouw bedrijven, een familie stichten en kapitaal vergaren. Hoewel de Joden in fysieke zin dus niet veel onder het vazalschap leden, viel de belegering en de latere plundering van Jeruzalem in 586 voor Christus, waaronder de vernietiging van de heilige tempel, veel ballingen erg zwaar. Terwijl zij onderworpen waren aan buitenlandse overheersing werd hun land, dat hen door God toegewezen was, vernietigd. Het ballingschap had op deze manier een grote invloed op de Joodse identiteit en de Joden gingen zich hechter voelen als een volk en als religieuze groep.

Met de verovering van Babylon door de Perzische koning Cyrus de Grote kwam in 538 voor Christus een einde aan de Babylonische Ballingschap. Cyrus gaf toestemming aan de Joden om terug te keren naar Juda, waarna zij Jeruzalem in de periode tussen 520 voor Christus en 515 voor Christus herbouwden. De nieuwe grote tempel werd in 516 voor Christus officieel ingewijd.18

De bovenstaande informatie lijkt te verklaren welk gebouw als inspiratie heeft gediend voor het verhaal van de Toren van Babel, maar wat echter onduidelijk blijft, is hoe de geruchten van taalverwarring de wereld ingekomen zijn.

Dr. George vermoed dat de aanleiding van de vernietiging van de toren te herleiden is naar de vele talen die door de bouwers, afkomstig uit de hele regio, gesproken werden.15 In de stèle werd beschreven dat er vele volkeren in dienst waren genomen om de toren te bouwen. De mythe over de vele talen zou voortkomen uit deze context. De bouw van de toren zou daarom niet gestopt zijn door het ingrijpen van God, maar werd veroorzaakt door de samenwerking van verschillende volkeren op de bouwplaats. Na een tijd zou de spraakverwarring voor problemen gezorgd hebben waardoor de bouw van de toren gestaakt moest worden.16 De Toren van Babel is slechts één van de vele voorbeelden van dit verschijnsel. Steeds vaker vinden archeologen dat bepaalde aspecten van Bijbelse verhalen in verband staan met historische gebeurtenissen. Nadat Darwin de wereld in de 19e eeuw schokte met zijn evolutietheorie, die twijfels zetten bij het verhaal van de schepping van de aarde in zes dagen, brak er een periode van onzekerheid aan. Mensen vroegen zich af wat er nog meer niet klopte in de Bijbel.

Dit zou pas omslaan nadat aan de hand van archeologisch bewijs werd ontdekt dat de Assyrische koningen, die beschreven worden in de Bijbel, echt bestaan hadden, waardoor we ons nu juist afvragen wat er nog meer waar is in de Bijbel. Het onderzoek naar de Toren van Babel kan gezien worden als een gevolg van deze ontwikkeling.

There’s Something in the Air Fighting a Mysterious Epidemic in Karain

T

hroughout the ages, many continents and peoples have faced disastrous epidemics and have experienced the worst of diseases. The devastating effects of such epidemics have necessitated scientific research for centuries, arguably even before the development of the scientific process. Finding the origins of the diseases has always been an important factor in increasing our understanding of them and our environment.1 One of these diseases is mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that develops in the mesothelium, a layer that forms the lining of some organs, such as the heart and the lungs.

Mesothelioma is primarily caused by exposure to asbestos, which is a fibrous mineral commonly used in construction, before its health risks were discovered. When inhaled, asbestos fibres cause damage to the mesothelium of the lungs, possibly leading to cancer. Worldwide, most people affected have worked with fabrics or in mines where the use asbestos was common. The Turkish village of Karain suffered an epidemic of this disease during the twentieth century.Almost all cases in Karain concern the mesothelium of the lungs.

Karain is a little village in the Nevsehir Province in Central Turkey. For years, the village had exhibited a relatively high death rate which medical authorities could not explain.

This was considered a normal condition for the village and thus was not noted until the 1960s. The first to notice the significantly higher death rate and sound the alarm was a teacher working in Karain. Despite having signalled the problem, research would not be conducted in Karain until the 1970s, because of the assumption that the higher death rate was a normal condition. It was only through the individual efforts of a professor of Hacettepe University, that this cause of deathi could be linked to cancer, and specifically mesothelioma. Professor Dr. Yusuf Izzettin Baris, who specialized in diseases of the chest, discovered this epidemic after treating patients from Karain and conducting independent field work in the small village.

He is praised to this day for his research and findings on mesothelioma itself which, as we shall see, revolutionized medicine and the sciences in various ways.2 The process of research and understanding the disease in Karain is an interesting study itself. It is already a fascinating circumstance for a rare form of cancer, like mesothelioma, to turn into an epidemic, as cancer is not an infectious

condition and so cannot spread from person to person.

Environmental factors then must explain the unusually large incidence of the disease. When Baris discovered mesothelioma in a patient from Karain being treated for the lung disease tuberculosis (which has similar symptoms to mesothelioma), he was told by the village’s headman that many of the villagers had similarly contracted ‘tuberculosis’.

This made him extremely curious. Baris had already conducted fieldwork in many villages in Central Turkey, during which he studied asbestos exposure, a common cause of mesothelioma, and endeavoured to prevent future exposure by warning government officials of the hazards of using asbestos.3 In many of these villages, patients who had contracted mesothelioma had been wrongly diagnosed with tuberculosis. So, when Baris heard about a village with a high rate of ‘tuberculosis’, he knew that it had to be mesothelioma.4

Abandoned houses where all inhabitants had died from the disease were called “Houses of Death” by the villagers.

After observing x-rays and scans of the affected villagers in various hospitals, Baris decided to start his own fieldwork and observe the village himself. Baris brought together a team of experts and set out. All his team had at their disposal was a portable x-ray machine (paid for by Baris), their expertise, and Baris’s personal financial resources.

Baris, an ex-military man, did not like the administrative hassle of his university, so he had not applied for official research permission from Hacettepe University, thus funding the project himself. His team was expected to work in these underfunded circumstances as well; they slept in their cars until the villagers took them in and gave them a place to sleep.5 Despite working in poor conditions, they were not dissuaded from conducting their research

32 to save lives. They worked tirelessly, taking and developing X-rays of patients one after another, stopping late in the evening for dinner and slept only to continue the next day.

Not long after beginning the fieldwork, they discovered that there had been no form of asbestos exposure – the most common cause of mesothelioma – in Karain. Baris suspected the epidemic was caused by a different mineral, but the question was: which?6 The two villages nearest to Karain, located in the same valley, had not experienced an epidemic of mesothelioma (or misdiagnosed tuberculosis), so it stood to reason there was some environmental factor present only in Karain.

Baris’s team conducted geographical research into Karain and its neighbouring villages. The local air, water, soil and rocks were analysed and compared. Only in Karain’s the water supply was any significant difference found. After testing the water supply by geological, biological and chemical experts, Baris’s findings showed that: “Water in Karain is obtained from: (a) the river; (b) the springs in the river bed; (c) wells in the fields; and (d) a spring in the hills behind the village which is piped to a communal tap in the village. The villagers are mainly dependent on the piped water, which has been available for over 100 years, for drinking, washing, and cooking.

The other two villages do not share Karain’s piped water supply but are otherwise similar.”7

Baris did not like the administrative hassle of his university and funded the project himself instead.

This research was crucial to exclude any cause of the epidemic related to water. Some anomalous Erionite fibres were found in Karain’s waterpipe supplies, but these were not considered as a potential cause of mesothelioma, since there was no link known between Erionite fibres ingested

in the stomach and mesothelioma of the lungs. Karain’s water supply was correctly ruled out as a possible cause of the epidemic, but as it would turn out, Erionite was actually causing the epidemic – just not in the water.8 Erionite is a fibrous mineral, not unlike the kinds of minerals which make up asbestos. This means that rocks containing Erionite contain microscopic fibres of the mineral which, when broken off, may end up in dust which can be whipped up by a breeze and end up in the air, creating a hazard much like airborne asbestos. When inhaled, these fibres can affect the mesothelium and, eventually, cause a malignant tumour to grow: mesothelioma. After much research, and drawing comparisons with two other villages elsewhere in the country where the same mysterious outbreaks of mesothelioma unrelated to asbestos were occurring, it was discovered that the Erionite fibres, found not only in the surrounding rocks, but in the stone used to construct Karain’s houses and pave the town’s streets as well, were responsible for the mesothelioma epidemic.9 The discovery of mesothelioma and Erionite in Karain

by Baris and his team constituted a breakthrough for his research and created a buzz in the scientific community.

After Baris published his findings, many scientists and scholars came to the village to conduct research. Baris teamed up with Michele Carbone, an American cancer specialist, for further research on mesothelioma in Turkey.

Carbone admired Baris’s work but was not convinced by his hypothesis. He was certain that Erionite exposure was not the only cause of mesothelioma. Carbone believed genetic factors in some families played a role in the development of mesothelioma. As Carbone would later help prove, a combination of genetic predisposition and exposure to Erionite can cause mesothelioma.10 The research team was awarded an American research grant for their work and was acknowledged throughout academia, but it would take decades before the government took the situation seriously enough to do anything about it. Baris’s discovery of Erionite as the culprit for the epidemic was made in 1978, but it was not until the early 2000s that the Turkish Ministry of Health was convinced of the seriousness of the case, the villagers were moved to other areas, where there was no Erionite exposure.

More positively, the findings in Karain resulted in the discovery of the cause of similar mesothelioma epidemics in the United States. American roads and buildings where Erionite exposure was discovered were replaced and many American and (eventually) Turkish lives were saved from death by mesothelioma.11

The cause of the epidemic was found in the very stone used to construct Karain’s houses and pave its streets.

Research on DNA and genetic predisposition led to the discovery of a gene in American families that was causing the mesothelioma in America. The gene, called BAP1, causes a very high risk of mesothelioma, even with the slightest exposure. This gene was not found in the Turkish families, however, so another factor may be involved that makes Turkish families sensitive to the disease. Carbone found that a factor in the contraction of the disease was previous infection with the SV40 virus, a virus which can cause cancer and is widespread because it infects polio vaccines, leading to millions being unwittingly infected by it.12 In Sweden, immigrants from Karain became subjects of several mesothelioma studies, which improved understanding of the disease in Europe.13 The discovery has led to a globally improved understanding of mesothelioma, genetic analysis and the functioning of epidemics and how the environment can cause even noninfectious diseases to become epidemics. The research in Central Turkey saved lives both in Turkey itself and the United States. For the global cooperation between Turkish and American researchers, the team received the first AACR-Landon Innovator Award for International Collaboration in Cancer Research in 2008.14

Winds of the World Madagascar: African or Malayan?

he ease of travelling over land depends a lot on what kind of terrain you might encounter; walking, riding, or driving across a flat plain is much easier and quicker than in rough mountains.Travelling over the seas is much of the same, except the terrain is not decided by the shape of the land, but the shape of the winds. Dayto-day winds can be unpredictable, but over the span of months and years, clear and reliable patterns emerge.

These patterns had massive effects on how ships, especially those with sails, could travel.This series of articles provides several brief examples.

Off the coast of Eastern Africa lies the huge island Madagascar, the fourth largest island on Earth. The island is inhabited by all sorts of plants and animals that cannot be found naturally anywhere else in the world. For much of the island’s existence, it has been relatively isolated from the rest of the world. Its past is shrouded in mystery. It is unknown when the first humans arrived on the island, but archaeological evidence points towards sometime during the first millennium C.E.1 The most commonly spoken language on the island, and the official language of the Madagascar government, is Malagasy, which is a Austronesian language, like Malaysian, Indonesian and Filipino. How did Malagasy speakers come to Madagascar, and when?

As you can read in the earlier article on the Indian Ocean (p. 21), wind, and thus travel by sail, is determined by the seasonal monsoons. The Southern Indian Ocean features a gyre like those of the Atlantic

Ocean (p. 8). Usually, this gyre moves in a counterclockwise direction, so that winds tend to move from Indonesia towards Africa, then towards the south along the African coast, and then east towards Australia. However, in the (northern) winter the gyre reverses direction due to influence from the monsoons.

In this gyre, winds and ocean currents moving from Africa to Madagascar are relatively rare: flows tend to “miss� the island. Despite the much greater distance, about 6700 kilometers instead of about 440 kilometers to the coast of modern-day Mozambique, prevailing winds and ocean currents make it possible to travel from Southeast Asia to Africa and more or less accidentally reach Madagascar. A lack of wind or current flowing from Africa to Madagascar has led to an ecological distinctiveness as well as a linguistic one. Because few species have been able to make the journey from Africa to Madagascar unaided by humans, Madagascar is filled with plants and animals found nowhere else.

Exactly when the Malagasy first arrived on Madagascar is still up to debate. Two questions are especially important in the academic debate: when did the first people arrive in Madagascar, and when did the Malagasy people first leave Indonesia? The first can be tackled by examining the archaeological evidence on the island, and the second by researching linguistic similarities between Malagasy and other Southeast Asian languages.

There is very little direct evidence of the first human settlers on Madagascar. Archaeologists have been able to analyse the change in landscapes and an increase in charcoal and can infer that the first humans may have arrived around 100 CE. This is not certain, since these changes might also be related to the climate becoming drier. Whether these humans settled permanently on the island is not known either, since no evidence of settlement could be found. It may be that humans visited the island to hunt but did not leave their ships for long.2 Somewhere between 1000 and 1350 CE Madagascar’s coasts became permanently inhabited: rice plantations were created, large herds of cattle were herded, and towns cropped up: the Malagasy had arrived. This fits the linguistic evidence for Malagasy peoples’ departure from Southeast Asia. Malagasy is most related to languages spoken on the southern coast of Borneo, in modern-day Indonesia. To determine when the Malagasy left Borneo, we need to look for influences from other languages, such

as Malay and Indian languages. Malagasy has relatively few Indian influences, which would imply the Malagasy left Southeast Asia before extensive trade between the two regions began, in the fifth century CE. However, some linguists argue that the lack of direct Indian influences on the language is insufficient proof that the Malagasy left Southeast Asia at this time. It is possible that some Malagasy words borrowed from other Southeast Asian languages were themselves originally borrowed from Indian languages: loanwords based on loanwords. This would mean that the Malagasy could have departed after the fifth century as well.3 Unfortunately, it is not possible to date the arrival of the Malagasy with any more certainty than a span of several centuries, somewhere between the seventh and thirteenth centuries.4

Air Combat Heritage in the Polder

The journey of B-17 Flying Fortress ‘Crazy Horse’ in WW2 O

n the 28th of May 1968, in the new Dutch Flevopolder, the remains of a World War Two bombing aircraft were found. It turned out to be the American Flying Fortress B-17 GSH-42-30280, nicknamed Crazy Horse. Its story is special for two reasons. First, because it is one of the few aircraft that participated in the Allied air assault called ‘Big Week’ and crashed in the Netherlands. Second, it is one of the few cases in which we can track down what happened to the crew.

Operation Argument or ‘Big Week’ Although air combat was already in use during the First World War, the air forces of the later Allies and Axis1 developed considerably during the Interbellum. During the Second World War, aerial warfare became especially important for Britain and the US because of their inability to get troops on the European mainland before D-Day on June 6th 1944. The Allies therefore started with strategic bombings against Germany in 1941.The aim was to cripple the German economy and war production by targeting strategic positions such as industrial areas and (rail)roads, but also submarine and aircraft factories in particular. Germany resisted Allied bombings by relying on anti-aircraft artillery on the ground and one-engine fighters in the sky to take down Allied bombers. As a direct consequence, the Germans had to remove troops and material from the Eastern front to supply the air defence at home.2 The bombings thus did not only help cripple the German economy, but also weakened the German front.

The operation Crazy Horse took part in was Operation Argument, also called ‘Big Week’. Argument was aimed at striking a decisive blow at the German air force industry in order to weaken the Luftwaffe and to gain supremacy in the air before the upcoming invasion of Normandy. British intelligence had established that German fighter strength had been growing steadily during 1943. In addition, the Luftwaffe had been developing more effective air combat tactics. These improvements were thought to be able to counter Allied assaults, so this operation was of great significance, hence the name ‘Big Week’.3 Argument was initially scheduled for November 1943, but due to bad weather it was delayed until the end of February 1944.4 When the operation finally commenced, the American Eighth Air Force went in with 3300 bombers and

2548 fighters. The British Ninth Air Force supplied 712 fighter escort sorties to accompany them.5 The success of the operation not only depended on the bombers, but on the Allied fighters as well. Not surprisingly, the Germans always attacked the Allied bombers first, so a lot depended on the Allied fighters to protect their bomber colleagues.6 Their mission was not just to passively defend the bombers, but to actively go after German fighters.7 This way, during ‘Big Week’ not only German Luftwaffe factories were damaged, but also a fair number of German fighters, in the air as well as on the ground.8 Despite this, the effectiveness of ‘Big Week’ is hard to determine. Reliable data and intelligence from Germany was scarce and crew often did not know whether they had hit their target.9 In total, German losses were 262 fighters (in the air and on the ground) and approximately 250 aircrew. Also, a fair number of Luftwaffe factories was badly damaged. Generally, military historians agree that Operation Argument was at least ‘significant’, however not decisive. The aim of gaining supremacy in the air was not reached.10 The crash One bomber that participated in Operation Argument was the GSH-42-30280 nicknamed Crazy Horse by the crew of the 8th Bomb Squadron US army air force.The US Army Air Corps was quick to add this model of bomber to its fleet and renamed it the B-17, but it gained the nickname ‘Flying Fortress’ because of its sheer size and its nine machine gun mounts. These planes made their military debut in 1941 when the Allied bombings started. The B-17 was wellfit for these kinds of missions because it could operate on higher altitudes than other bombers and fly longer distances which made it possible to reach targets deep into enemy territory. B-17s were also well-equipped to defend themselves having those nine machine guns and being able to take a brutal pounding without losing balance in the air.11 It was the second day of the ‘Big Week’ offensive, Monday morning February 21st 1944, when Crazy Horse took

off from the British Isles to drop its load on Osnabrück Diepholz airport, a Luftwaffe base.

Crazy Horse was one of nine hundred bombing aircraft that were deployed that day. Usually there were eleven crewmembers on board, but this morning Crazy Horse had two additional crewmembers: second lieutenant Barrett who functioned as an extra spotter and second lieutenant Punches, a navigator, who added some experience having already done twenty four missions.12 They reached the Dutch coastline without any sign of enemy aircraft. From their testimonies we know that the many ‘small friends’ surrounding them, made the crew feel safe.13 The German anti-air artillery only started firing when they crossed the Dutch-German border. At first, this did not bother them too much because the Flying Fortress could reach higher altitudes than the artillery fire. It did become a problem when Crazy Horse had to descend to pinpoint the exact location and moment on which to drop its load. Right after the bombs were dropped, artillery fire hit Crazy Horse and damaged two of its four engines.

Despite the heavy impact the pilots were able to maintain balance in the air and turn around. However, they were not able to re-join the safety of the retreating formation. At this point, they were losing altitude rapidly.14 To make matters worse, Crazy Horse was noticed by two German Focke Wulf hunters who were chasing the retreating formation. The German pilots were not going to let the opportunity to take down a huge Allied bombing aircraft pass. They attacked Crazy Horse headon and destroyed the third engine which then caught fire. As a result, the oxygen pressure decreased and the electricity went off. The German fighters then backed off, being certain that the bomber would soon crash. Still, the pilots managed to remain airborne and kept flying towards England with one engine. Unfortunately, the plane was losing altitude much faster than the crew expected.

At one point Crazy Horse was flying at only 1.800 meters (5.900 feet), compared to a safe altitude of 7.500 to 10.500 meters (25.000 to 35.000 feet). As this situation could not be sustained for long, it became clear that they were not going to make it back to England.15

38 At 1.800 meters it was still possible for the crew to execute a safe parachute jump. Pilot Holcombe gave the command and all twelve crewmen jumped and landed safely near the town of Harderwijk.16 Navigator Punches remembers the jump quite vividly: ‘I tried to wait until I was at 1.000 feet (300 meters) before pulling the parachute, but the temptation was too great and I pulled the chute at not even half that distance. Because of this, I was still very close to the B-17. Very quickly, I felt a hard pull like I was pulled upwards towards the sky with great strength. Immediately after that there was this peaceful quietness about which they tell you in training. Away from the engine sounds and hectic on board; it felt good and peaceful. I could still just see the aircraft before I entered the clouds. It didn’t take long before I could see the ground beneath me. At first I thought I saw shrubbery but that turned out to be trees.

Suddenly the ground approached at a very fast pace and I hit the ground. Fortunately, I ended up in an open field. I quickly got rid of my parachute.’17 In the meantime, pilot Holcombe kept flying the plane.

By the time his fellow crewmembers had jumped, the plane had dropped so low that it was not safe for him to jump after them. If he had jumped, he would inevitably have landed in the ice-cold IJsselmeer and would either have drowned or died of hypothermia. During these last moments Holcombe presumably decided to go down with his aircraft. His body washed up on the shore of Bunschoten on the 28th of April 1944 about seventeen kilometres from where Crazy Horse crashed.18 On the run The other twelve crewmen had survived and were now in danger of being arrested by the Germans.Written and oral testimonies tell us what happened to them. After landing near Harderwijk, second lieutenant Punches managed to navigate himself to a farmhouse where locals

told him where he was and how to get to Amsterdam.

Going to the capital might seem odd, but the organized resistance there could often help Allied airmen hide or even get out of the country. After walking for four hours in a southwestern direction he met a Dutchman who took him under his wing and helped him get false papers and civilian clothing. His career was immediately changed from US air force navigator to pharmacist in Amsterdam.

He joined the resistance and received information that fellow crewmembers captain Binks, sergeant Booth and first lieutenant Haupt were still on the run. Haupt had got stuck in a tree near Apeldoorn but managed to free himself and had found his way to the resistance as well.

From the source material available it does not seem that the crewmembers who joined the resistance had any contact with each other during this period. Most other crewmembers had also landed near Harderwijk, but were quickly discovered and arrested by the Germans.19 All men who had thus far escaped German capture were well-aware that them being in the Netherlands was highly dangerous. They were in a foreign country where they did not speak the language and the resistance knew that it was only a matter of time before someone would notice them and give them up. All men in hiding were supposed to somehow be transported out of occupied territory to try to go back to England or the US. This way, second lieutenant Punches ended up on farm in Belgium near Liege where he hid in a haystack for a week. He was then told that at this point it was best to wait for the advancing Allied forces. After what turned out to be a two month wait on the same farm, he was free. An army truck transported him to Paris, from where he flew to London and New York thereafter.20 First lieutenant Haupt and sergeant Booth made it to the end of the war in a similar fashion. Captain

39 Laura Brinkhorst Binks, however, was not as lucky and was arrested by the Gestapo on May 27th 1944 near Liege. He ended up in a prisoner of war camp called Stalag Luft I near Barth in eastern Germany. Conditions in the camp were harsh. His testimony states that prisoners had to use cardboard as blankets and often ate rotten food to survive. Binks did manage to survive and was liberated by the Russians in 1945.21 The same happened to sergeant Raemer, who was quickly captured by the Germans after he had landed. He too was sent to Stalag Luft and was one of the thousands of prisoners of war who walked a Death March, but managed to survive.22 This deportation method was forced on many concentration camp prisoners at the end of the war. The Nazis tried to erase traces of concentration camps by removing prisoners from the camps and sending them on these so-called Death Marches. An estimated quarter million people perished because of this.23 The wreck Compared to other crash sites in the Netherlands it is remarkable how much we know about what happened to the crew. Usually, if an aircraft was shot down above the IJsselmeer (thirty aircrafts have been found up to this date)24 its crewmembers could not get out of the plane on time before impact, or jumped too late, and drowned in the ice-cold lake. The story of Crazy Horse is, not yet over, however. On the 28th of May 1968 the water level in the polder dropped so low that aircraft wrecks from the Second World War became visible. One of the first wrecks that surfaced was Crazy Horse. In 1970 a salvage company, together with a special unit from the Royal Dutch Air Force started the salvaging of Crazy Horse.25 This process ended the debate on whether pilot Holcombe died inside the plane or whether he in the end did make the jump and perished from drowning or hypothermia. Among the wreckage a piece of a parachute harness and a piece of a life jacket were found. If he had jumped these pieces of equipment would have been found on Holcombe’s body instead of inside the plane, so he must have been inside when the plane hit the water.26 While Holcombe was the only casualty of this mission, all other crewmembers returned home after the war and most of them reached respectable ages of well over eighty years old. Many more aircraft crash sites from the Second World War can be found in Flevoland and are marked by a distinct white and blue pole with a red plane on top. They are commissioned by a foundation (Stichting Ongeland) who conducts research on them and marks the locations.

This way,World War Two heritage is being commemorated in the Dutch ‘new land’.

The Mirage of Climate Wars

The Role of Climate Change in the Darfur Conflict ‘Will climate change lead to more world conflict?’ and ‘Heating up – How climate change can fuel wars’ are only two examples of the plethora of newspaper articles touching on the possible consequences of climate change that have been published over the course of the past few years.1 As the UN climate action summit and the Fridays for Future movement illustrate, our awareness of climate change is continuously growing.2 On top of climate mitigation measures and disaster relief programmes, the climate change discussion causes some to wonder what kind of role the climate may play in future conflicts, in particular with regard to resource scarcity.3 So-called climate wars usually describe the nexus between violence and climate change and often refer to conflicts which were provoked by environmental changes.4 As of lately, climate wars have been mainly interpreted as large-scale wars, with many scholars, most notably Marshall Burke, paying special attention to civil wars and their relation to climate change.5 One conflict that tends to be taken as a textbook example of a climate war is the Darfur crisis.6 In 2003, a civil war broke out in the region of Darfur in Sudan that has so far killed thousands of people and displaced millions.7 In academia, the role of climate change in regard to violent conflicts is very polarized, with some scholars stressing the primary importance of environmental changes in the context of violent disputes, while others dismiss the climate change aspect as a peripheral factor: one cause among many.8 This article will attempt to provide some clarity concerning the question of whether the conflict in Darfur can be labelled as a climate war or not. In a world in which climate change is pushed to the forefront of everybody’s mind, the future is often seen as a scary and unpredictable place, characterized by ideas of a worldwide scramble for resources.9 Analysing a conflict that has frequently been described as ‘the first climate war’ might allow us to gain a better understanding of what we can expect from the future and to what extent the predictions presented to us right now are realistic prospects.

Background of the Conflict The Darfur region is located in the Western part of Sudan and is made up of three different states, namely North Darfur, West Darfur, and South Darfur.10 Due to the sheer size of the region, Darfur consists of different vegetation zones; the northern area is part of the Sahel zone, while the West and South consist of different types of savannah.11 The population of the region of Darfur is ethnically diverse and can be grouped into two categories, those of African

and those of Arabic descent, and two subcategories, viz., nomadic pastoralists and sedentary farmers.

The outbreak of the Darfur conflict took place on the 18th of April 2003, when the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLA) attacked the Al-Fashir airport located in North Darfur, local police stations, and destroyed four aeroplanes and kidnapped the head of the Air Force.12 Around 75 soldiers are believed to have died. The government reacted by hiring the Janjaweed militia, a group consisting of mainly Sudanese Arabs, and providing them with weapons as well as planning and carrying out bombardments with them.13 In September 2003, the first of many ceasefires was signed thanks to the help of neighbouring Chad, though it lasted only 45 days.14 Attacks continued, now also carried out by the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), a group also in opposition to the Sudanese government. As a reaction to the ongoing unrest, the government launched a large offensive in North Darfur in the beginning of 2004, which resulted in the Sudanese president announcing the victory of the government over the rebels.15 In April 2004, a second ceasefire, in which the government, SLA, and JEM all signed, failed as well.16 The process was repeated on the 9th of November 2004 with a similar outcome.17 The fighting continued and intensified, causing many to flee their homes. Two years and multiple peace treaties later,

the government and the SLA signed the Darfur Peace Agreement in May 2006. The Agreement was intended to be the final peace agreement of the conflict, but it sadly did not put an end to the civil war.18

Government-backed militias bombarded village and committed mass rape and tortured civilians.

The reasons for the series of failed peace negotiations can be mainly located in three different areas. Firstly, the demands made by SLA and JEM, for example in the form of more national and regional political representation or ending the collaboration between Janjaweed militias and the government, were not adequately included in the various peace agreements.19 Additionally, bad governance added to the longevity of the conflict. Instead of adhering to ceasefire deals and choosing a peaceful conflict resolution approach, the Sudanese government continued to actively support and motivate the actions of government forces and government backed militias such as the Janjaweed, who bombarded villages and mass raped and tortured civilians, just to name a few.20 On top of that, the conflict sharpened ethnic enmities which were, despite occasional small-scale inter-ethnic conflicts, relatively non-existent prior to the outbreak of the civil war. However, with ethnic tensions between Arabs and Africans now much more sharply contrasted, the process of peace negotiations has become much more complicated.21 The good news is that active violence appears to have subsided over the past few years, though negotiations between the government and the rebels are still ongoing to this day.22 Environmental Changes and Their Consequences As mentioned earlier, occasional small-scale conflicts between pastoralists and agriculturalists have been the norm in Darfur for centuries, but scholars believe that

resource scarcity has aggravated the problem dramatically and contributed to the outbreak of the war. Firstly, the population of Sudan has seen exponential growth over the past few years which, in turn, resulted in ”[…] great pressure upon, overuse, and misuse of [natural] resources.”23 Partly as a result of intensive land usage and excessive deforestation, desertification has become a big issue that contributes to the escalation of land conflicts.24 For example, land degradation affects the availability of grazing land, which is essential for pastoralists and their livestock.25 On top of that, due to the level of aridity changing in the Sahel, ”[…] ecological zones shift southward or northward […], which in turn affects the competition between pastoralism and agriculture in a given area.”26 Other problems are the fluctuation of rainfall and droughts as well as changes in global temperature patterns and how that affects resource scarcity. In relation to rainfall, migration plays an important role. As De Juan pointed out, ”[m]igration has been emphasised as an essential element of the causal pathway linking environmental change to violence”.27 Generally, in areas with fluctuating climates, people are well adapted and have developed effective coping strategies.28 However, the droughts in the 1970s and the long periods of low rainfall have forced many people in the 1990s to migrate to regions with better rainfall, such as the Jebel Marra highlands.29 The environmental changes and the resulting migration caused groups to suddenly co-habit and interact with people they had no – or very little – previous contact to. Moreover, areas that experienced an influx of migrants have also witnessed an increase in local resource extraction, which consequently worsened the existing resource scarcity.30 In regard to temperature, there seems to be an increase of on average 0.4°C per decade, with the western and southern areas of Sudan being hit the hardest.31 All three factors, fluctuating rainfall, drought, and an increase in temperature, cause ”[…] crop yields [to] decline and rural incomes [to] fall, and the disadvantaged rural population becomes more likely to take up arms […]”.32

The already underdeveloped region of Darfur continues to fall behind even more.

The Role of Non-Environmental Factors On top of environmental reasons, the SLA as well as the JEM mentioned the problem of economic and political marginalisation of the Darfur region as a motive that pushed them to start the rebellion.33 This can be illustrated

42 by looking at the access to healthcare. The number of medically trained people that are present during births and the provision of immunization are both lower in Darfur than in northern Sudanese regions.34 As a result, infant mortality is high and female life expectancy low. The same can be observed when looking at the subsidy distribution.

The northern states receive twice as many subsidies than the western states and 80% of all developmental aid, which causes the already underdeveloped region of Darfur to fall behind even more.35 The marginalisation of the Darfurians in the political realm emerged out of ”[n] eo-independent Sudan [being] the result of negotiations between the British, the Egyptians, and the northern Sudanese, which consolidated the elite of the colonial period, the Northern Arab Muslims, to the head of the new government.”36 The overrepresentation of the northern elite is exemplified when looking at the region of origin of ministers in the Sudanese government between 1956 and 2000 and comparing that with the population distribution. Even though the northern region contains a single-digit percentage of the population, it had the highest ministerial representation for the majority of the 44 years that were analysed.37 Going hand in hand with the political and economic alienation of the Western region of Sudan, the attempt of the government to crack down on the local traditions is not met with euphoria either. Due to the government of the ‘neo-independent Sudan’ ”[…] regard[ing] native administration as an archaic system that was part of the colonial legacy […]” and replacing it with government-dominated institutions, local conflicts that were originally solved through traditional practices, such as reconciliation conferences or customary courts, now had the chance to erupt into something much bigger.38

Calling the Darfur civil war a climate war would ignore the other factors.

Conclusion Can we call the civil war in Darfur really a ‘climate war’?

The truth is, it is difficult to give a clear-cut answer.

Environmental changes and their consequences were not the primary cause for the outbreak of the conflict.

Fluctuations in rainfall, an increase in temperature, droughts, land degradation, and the consequences of these changes did motivate people to take up arms, but only in combination with economic marginalisation, political underrepresentation, and the destruction of local traditional administrations. Environmental changes

played an important role, but calling the Darfur civil war a climate war would ignore the other factors, whether of political, cultural, or political nature, that make the conflict so multi-dimensional and complex. It gives, in the case of Darfur, people such as the government an easy way out, because they are not held accountable for their actions that contributed to a tense atmosphere.

No one can predict the future and it will remain unclear if actual climate wars will pose a threat to humanity.

However, if there is one lesson that the war in Darfur can teach us, it is that while climate change might contribute to the emergence of conflicts, the scale is decided by other factors, in Darfur in particular by the actions of the government. Resource scarcity is an issue and might very well continue to be one for upcoming generations, but the way to climate wars is not a deterministic, pre-destined path with no alternatives available.

Winds of the World New Zealand: Humanity’s Final Frontier

T

he ease of travelling over land depends a lot on what kind of terrain you might encounter; walking, riding, or driving across a flat plain is much easier and quicker than in rough mountains.Travelling over the seas is much of the same, except the terrain is not decided by the shape of the land, but the shape of the winds. Dayto-day winds can be unpredictable, but over the span of months and years, clear and reliable patterns emerge.

These patterns had massive effects on how ships, especially those with sails, could travel.This series of articles provides several brief examples.

About 60,000 years ago, Homo sapiens left their ancestral home of Africa and spread all over Eurasia over the course of thousands of years. Humans reached Australia about 50,000 years ago and the Americas about 20,000 years ago.

An island nation off the east coast of Australia remained uninhabited by any humans until less than a thousand years ago: New Zealand was first settled by humans around 1200 CE, about 400 years before its “discovery” by European explorers.1 This made it the last large group of islands to be permanently settled by humans.

The distance between New Zealand and Australia is about 4000 kilometers.This distance is substantial, but, as the case of Madagascar earlier in this issue demonstrates (p. xx), it is not insurmountable by a group of sufficiently motivated maritime explorers. So why was there such a large gap between human settlement in Australia and New Zealand?

First, it should be made clear that there is no ethnic relation between the various Australian Aboriginal peoples and the New Zealand Maori. Instead, the Maori are more genetically and culturally related to Polynesian peoples native to islands to the north. The Maori discovered New Zealand in one of the final phases of Polynesian expansion.

Over the course of thousands of years, the Polynesians occasionally spread to other islands to colonize further out in the Pacific Ocean, sailing with the winds to reach places such as New Caledonia and Hawai’i.2

The Polynesians made use of the Pacific gyres which, similarly to those in the Atlantic Ocean (see p. 8), dictated prevailing wind patterns and ocean currents. Along the equator, between the northern and southern trade winds, the wind blew eastwards, facilitating travel and trade between the Pacific island chains. In the Pacific, the trade winds bend south to reach New Zealand, allowing the islands to be reached from the North East, but making it difficult to reach New Zealand from the West.

For millennia, the winds of the world determined the patterns of human travel, and the exchange of ideas, goods, and people. The winds determined where humans could go, and when. Two places that may seem close together were sometimes worlds apart, virtually impossible to reach because of the winds. Other lands, which may have been separated by tens of thousands of kilometers, could be relatively close for sailing ships. Hawai’i is the most isolated island chain in the world, yet humans reached it centuries before New Zealand.

Only at the close of the age of sail, when ships became powered by the mechanical power of engines rather than that of the wind, did the wind’s influence on maritime navigation lessen. However, it did not disappear. The cities that were founded in advantageous locations regarding prevailing winds have remained some of the most important and largest ports in the world. Where humans chose to settle was, by-and-large, already determined by the close of the age of sail. The wind’s influence on our world can still be felt today.
