une brings longer days, brighter light, and a sense of energy that invites us to be present. Summer has a way of slowing things down just enough for us to reflect, reset, and reconnect—with ourselves and with those who matter

most.

It also brings Father’s Day—a moment to honor the men who lead, provide, teach, and protect.

Fatherhood is more than a title. It’s a responsibility. It’s the daily commitment to show up, to guide, and to pour into the next generation.

Whether you are a father, a father figure, or a man striving to lead by example, your presence matters more than you JUNE realize.

Many of us carry lessons from the men who raised us—both what to do and, in some cases, what to do differently. Fatherhood is not about perfection. It’s about consistency. It’s about growth. It’s about choosing to be better, even when you didn’t have a perfect example yourself.

In my own journey, I’ve come to understand that leadership starts at home. The way we show up for our families reflects the man we are becoming. It’s not just about what we say—it’s about what we model. Our discipline, our character, our integrity—those are the things that leave a lasting impact.

Summer reminds us to be present. To not let time pass without intention. To create moments, build memories, and strengthen bonds that will outlive us.

That same mindset is part of what fuels Code M Magazine—a commitment to uplift Black and Brown men to lead with purpose, to grow with intention, and to build legacies that matter.

My hope is that the words and images in this issue inspire you to lead with strength, show up with purpose, and embrace the responsibility of shaping the future.

In a world caught up with distractions and drama, the confluence of arts, advocacy, and entertainment as a means to re-engage humanity on deeper, more meaningful levels is imperative.

r. Wendy Ellis Jones didn’t grow up expecting to become what she now calls “The NIL Doctor.” She grew up on the south side of Chicago with a singular escape route: running. As a skinny kid with big dreams, she found that speed could transport her beyond what anyone thought was possible.

[ LIFE ] umans create 402.74 million terabytes of information daily, of which the average American consumes up to 74 GB — roughly 200,000 words or 200 hours of TikTok — per day. Via the five senses, they can handle about 11 million bits per second, but their conscious mind can only comprehend approximately 50 bits per second.

The 24/7 barrage of news, all-consuming social media, and a tsunami of “entertainment” is leading to impaired focus, compromised decision-making or paralysis, sleep deprivation, and decreased productivity and efficiency. It’s all wearing people down, overloading them to the point of exhaustion, depletion, despair, and depression — burnout.

First appearing in the early 1970s, the term “burnout” was used to describe the emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion experienced by people in the healthcare professions. It’s now applied to every segment of society and can affect any individual, no matter what their education, profession, title, celebrity, wealth, or status.

The upshot is that burnout is the byproduct of our times.

It’s not news that Americans are living in a fast-paced, frenetic, constantly changing world. Trying to keep up with it all is extremely taxing, and the overload of information and the need to stay on top of the mountain of data is having a seriously deleterious effect on the US population.

8 seconds in 2023, comparable to that of goldfish Economists estimate that information overload costs the US $900 billion per year in reduced productivity and innovation Needless to say, burnout can have serious effects on one’s health, from an increased risk of heart disease to a weakened immune system, digestive issues, depression, anxiety, and impaired cognitive functioning.

So that’s the workplace situation concerning burnout that we’ve become more familiar with over the last couple of decades. But burnout also occurs in another way, which is with one’s mental/emotional set. This occurs when specific topics are forever in the news and on social media, the constant focus of conversations, are repeatedly advertised, and made wedge points in campaigns and causes of all kinds.

Some issues have been with us for decades — even centuries — so much so that people are truly tired of hearing and reading about them. It doesn’t matter how important an issue may be or how significantly it impacts lives — it’s become brain-numbing.

There are two ways of characterizing this phenomenon: Cognitive weariness — overload of mental stimulation or information; leads to emotional exhaustion, reduced mental resilience, and downward spiraling apathy.

Social fatigue — develops from spending large amounts of time with people wherein one feels pressed to engage in topics and issues ad nauseam; leads to feeling drained, anxious, and irritated.

The list of issues society is tired of facing is seemingly endless, but there are a few that top the list: racism, climate change and the environment, LGBTQ+ and gender, religion, cancer, misogyny and male toxicity, pornography, immigration, wealth inequality, healthcare, boomers and aging, housing, guns, crime, corporate malfeasance, corruption, and politics.

People are so-o-o done with hearing about these, talking about them, reading about them, seeing expressions of them in movies, TV shows, YouTube videos, on TikTok and Instagram, and in books. Granted, they are all important issues requiring attention, input, and involvement — yet the unending focus on them has

[ LIFE ] worn people down to the point that they’re experiencing a seriously reduced quality of life.

Part of the problem is that there are a plethora of individuals, influencers, and agencies whose sole purpose is to preach to and enflame viewers and followers with non-stop diatribes, and disparaging and inciting postings, sound bites, and “reports.” They’re relying on the fact that those listening and following are so fatigued by the amount of information output that they’re barely using their critical thinking skills, if at all.

Thus, a widely employed methodology is used called mis- and disinformation, otherwise known as “fake news.” DemandSage, a company that provides data-driven solutions for business growth, reports that: Approximately 62% of online information could be false On average, 40% of content shared on social media platforms is false 44% of news consumers don’t trust news from traditional sources 93% of social media videos are now generated using AI for manipulative purposes Fake news costs the global economy $78 billion annually Combined with the deluge of constantly “streaming” news, the influx of partial, manipulated, and completely fabricated information is seriously daunting. With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), it’s becoming increasingly difficult to discern true vs. fictitious narratives, which has put many people on hypervigilant edge.

On the flip side, for many people, it’s numbed them to a degree where they no longer bother to check the veracity of the information they’re taking in, and they no longer care. The expectation is that someone else will deal with the issues and make things right.

to put their energies toward. It’s as simple as that, yet can take all of a person’s willpower to make different choices — especially if the people around them are pressuring them in any way.

Life is all about choices, and those choices create the realities people live and operate within. Burnout is solvable, and it begins with each person making the number one choice of taking care of themselves first. That can involve anything from spending less time with certain people to changing the dynamics of relationships. It also means significantly reducing the amount of time spent scrolling the news and social media. This is what’s called “setting boundaries,” which can apply to anything that garners so much attention and wears one down.

Another step to take is to assess what triggers the emotional response of shutting down mentally and emotionally. The choice is to then avoid those triggers and choose something more positive, affirming, and supportive.

One could also work with a trained therapist to determine the motivation and meaning behind those things that cause overwhelm and burnout. Then, another choice needs to be made as to what truly needs one’s attention and the depth of its importance.

Though life will always present challenges — and some challenges have been with us a long time — it’s important to work with others when it comes to the big issues. That way, a person won’t feel they stand alone but instead have the support of like-minded people. Stay attuned to those things that truly matter and know that together, we stand stronger. “In every community, there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is the power to do it.” (Marianne Williamson)

This unending scenario creates an enervating, anesthetizing, and brain-deadening inertia on individuals, communities, and the populace at large.

The antidote to overwhelm, apathy, and burnout is: choice. Every person alive has multiple opportunities each day to make choices about what they want to focus on, who they want to listen to, what to watch and read, who they hang with, and what they want

eneration Z (born between 1997 and 2012) has consistently witnessed the US entering wars and conflicts with nations across the globe. This generation lived through the Global War on Terror, which began after the September 11 terrorist attacks, when the US entered wars in both Afghanistan and Iraq. The war ultimately came to an end in 2021, when President Biden withdrew US troops from Afghanistan.

Of course, the US still maintains military operations in other countries, such as Somalia and Yemen, but the end of the “Forever Wars” in Afghanistan and Iraq seemed to offer hope for a new chapter with even less military involvement in conflicts across the globe. However, that hope did not last long.

Shortly afterward, Gen Z witnessed the rise of modern global conflicts, such as the Russia-Ukraine War and the Israel-Hamas war, which caused many members of this generation to mobilize in opposition, particularly regarding the conflict in the Middle East. Much of this opposition stems from the United States’ support of what many Americans describe as Israel’s genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.

People of all ages, but especially Gen Z, have felt compelled to protest against the United States’ funding of the war, as many are uncomfortable with their taxpayer dollars being used to support a conflict they believe has led to genocide and inhumane treatment of Palestinians.

Many Palestinians affected by the war are not affiliated with Hamas, the terrorist organization responsible for the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that killed more than 1,000 people. The Trump administration and Israeli officials have offered several different justifications for the war, including preventing an alleged Iranian threat, stopping Iran from developing nuclear weapons, weakening Iran’s military capabilities, and limiting the influence of Iranian-backed groups in the Middle East. However, critics and some lawmakers have questioned these explanations, arguing that there was little evidence Iran planned to directly attack the US. For many younger Americans who are already frustrated by the United States’ involvement in the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Iran war appears to be another example of Israel drawing the US into a conflict that many Americans view unfavorably. A recent PBS/NPR/Marist poll found that 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of President Trump’s handling of the war. The conflict has also become increasingly unpopular because of its impact on the American economy. With the Strait of Hormuz closed, gas prices across the country have sharply increased.

This has further affected President Trump’s approval ratings, which were already historically low. According to The New York Times, his approval rating has now fallen to 38%. During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump promised to lower the cost of living, reduce gas prices, avoid entering the US into additional wars, and end various military operations that took place under the Biden administration. However, many Americans feel that the opposite

While anti-war movements in recent years have often leaned more toward the political left, many young conservatives have also expressed opposition to increased US military involvement in global conflicts. As a result, the Iran war has contributed to growing divisions within the Republican Party.

In America, Gen Z’s involvement in the anti-war movement is a significant part of their broader political identity, as there are a variety of reasons why younger Americans are speaking out against US involvement in wars and conflicts across the globe.

Gen Z has become a leading force in modern anti-war activism, driven by skepticism toward foreign intervention and a strong focus on humanitarian and social consequences. Many in this generation, having grown up during the “forever wars,” tend to favor diplomacy over military action and are less supportive of US involvement in global conflicts, including those in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Their activism is also shaped by digital organizing, with social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Discord playing a key role in coordinating protests and spreading awareness. Gen Z often connects foreign policy issues to domestic concerns, including policing, racial injustice, and economic inequality. Many argue that military spending diverts resources away from essential social services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure, which

directly affects their future. Overall, their involvement is less rooted in traditional pacifism and more in a desire to reduce global instability while addressing the broader social and economic consequences of war.

Anti-war movements have been prevalent in the US for decades, with one of the most significant peaks occurring during opposition to the Vietnam War. Of course, Gen Z’s involvement in the anti-war movement is different from previous anti-war movements the country has seen. Their activism, particularly around conflicts such as Gaza, reflects both continuity with earlier movements and important differences in motivation and structure. Like Vietnam-era protests, Gen Z activism is often youth-led and centered on college campuses, where students organize demonstrations, demand divestment, and express distrust of government foreign policy.

However, unlike the Vietnam movement, which was largely driven by the fear of the military draft and direct personal involvement in war, Gen Z’s anti-war stance is more rooted in ethical concerns, human rights, and opposition to perceived systemic injustice. Their organizing is also more decentralized and digitally driven, relying on social media platforms to quickly spread information and mobilize support rather than formal, hierarchical organizations.

Additionally, while earlier anti-war movements focused primarily on ending a single conflict, Gen Z activism tends to be more intersectional, linking opposition to war with broader issues such as racial justice, economic inequality, and climate change.

Gen Z has emerged as one of the most vocal generations opposing military intervention. The rise of their anti-war activism demonstrates that younger Americans are increasingly demanding accountability and humanitarian-focused foreign policy decisions.

By organizing through digital platforms and connecting global conflicts to domestic struggles, Gen Z has transformed anti-war activism into a broader movement centered on justice and human rights. Their activism reflects a growing belief that the US must prioritize diplomacy over continued involvement in foreign wars. Much like previous generations who protested the Korean and Vietnam wars, Gen Z’s antiwar movement could leave a lasting impact on the future of US foreign policy. ●

[ COVER ] When people think about getting a job, they often miss the real goal of working. Most people assume that if they work for money, they will be happy. But, in reality, it only gets them a paycheck. What so many people miss about working is that they should pursue a career. They should pursue something they enjoy. Something that, with time, will reward them with a career, money, and pride in the fact that they are doing what they love.

Kelly Edwards was no different from most when, nineteen years ago, she was trying to figure out what to do with her life. Edwards worked in various positions and jobs, but never found anything that gave her the joy she expected.

Nothing really gave her the money either.

The young Edwards decided she wanted a position that she could sink her teeth into and make a career out of it. She saw an opportunity to get into construction and jumped at it.

“I decided to join Hard Hatted Women and the rest was history,” Edwards said.

Hard Hatted Women is a program that exposes women to the life of construction. When Edwards joined the program, she did not know that it was going to lead to a 20-year career, but she knew that construction workers made good money and had long careers.

“It is such a wonderful organization. It is like a family.” Edwards continued, “We would go to places and help other people with their construction needs. By helping them, it helped us because we got the opportunity to learn on the job, get real training, and develop our skills into a real job.”

Typically, when someone goes into construction, they have a choice of what area they want to focus on. They can work in several different areas.

Electrician: Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical power, communications, and lighting systems.

Plumber: Installs and maintains piping systems for drinking water, sewage, and drainage in residential and commercial buildings.

Brick/Stone Mason: Constructs and repairs walls, walkways, and decorative features using bricks, concrete blocks, and natural stone.

Carpenter: Installs frameworks, doors, cabinetry, and other wooden structures.

Edwards decided to focus on pipefitting.

“I was not too interested in getting electrocuted, so I decided to try pipefitting,” Edwards said.

A pipefitter is a highly skilled tradesperson who lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs, and maintains high-pressure mechanical piping systems. These complex networks transport critical materials like steam, chemicals, gases, and hydraulics in industrial environments such as power plants, refineries, and manufacturing facilities.

Pipefitter vs. Plumber While both trades work with pipes, they deal with entirely different systems: Pipefitters focus on heavy-duty, high-pressure, commercial, and industrial systems (e.g., steam pipes, acid lines, and heavy hydraulics). Their work requires advanced knowledge of metallurgy and mathematics.

Plumbers typically concentrate on lower-pressure systems for tap water, sewage, and drainage in residential and commercial buildings.

Core Responsibilities A pipefitter’s daily duties rely heavily on precision and safety: Blueprint Reading: Interpreting technical drawings to layout and plan piping routes.

Fabrication: Cutting, threading, bending, and welding pipes (often using steel and durable metal alloys).

Edwards mastered her position quickly and became a reliable source for construction companies looking for quality pipefitters in the area. In 2020, she met Lonnie Coleman, from Coleman Spohn, and that launched her into the career she has today.

these massive projects are reshaping the region's transit, entertainment, and waterfront districts. Transportation & Infrastructure Cleveland Hopkins International Airport Terminal: A $1.6 billion, multi-year project to build a brand-new terminal. The first phase—a 6,000-space parking garage and relocated RTA station—is scheduled to open by 2029, with the final terminal opening in 2032.

“Over the next ten years there is going to be over 10 billion dollars of construction in the city of Cleveland, and we are excited to participate in that incredible span of construction,” Edwards said.

“Lonnie Coleman and Coleman Spohn changed my life. His leadership and trust have allowed me to reach my full potential and thrive within the company,” Edwards said.

Today, she manages a team of forty-six and oversees a 160 million project for the Cleveland Clinic. That four-year project will come to a close soon. She will continue to manage the project to make sure the building is turned over in working order. Edwarda and Coleman Spohn have many other opportunities that they are working on, where Edwarda and her team will continue to manage and build infrastructure in and around Northeast Ohio.

I-90 Innerbelt Modernization: A multi-billion-dollar, decadeslong project by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). A $328 million phase along I-90 from E. 9th to Carnegie Avenue is already underway and is expected to replace pavements and bridges by 2032.

Stadium & Entertainment Brook Park Browns Development: The city is shifting its entertainment focus with a massive $2.6 billion project in nearby Brook Park. Plans include a new domed stadium for yearround use, 1,500+ residential units, hotels, and public open space, representing a monumental regional shift.

The trails and park loop are scheduled to open between 2027 and 2029.

Downtown Office-to-Residential Conversions: Cleveland continues its national trend of turning obsolete office buildings into housing.

Edwards and Coleman Spohn are excited to be able to participate in the growth of Cleveland.

“We think Cleveland is a very good place to live, and to compete with other major cities, we must keep up with the global demands that are coming. It is an exciting time to be in construction here,”

Edwards said.

Edwards often refers to her coworkers and team as family because they spend so much time together.

“I think that is the best part of what I get to do every day. I never knew that when I made the decision to go into construction, I would also find a family. Edwards continued, “Because your job becomes your career, and the people around you work with you every day, these people become family and friends. We go through the battles together; it is a very special career and trade.”

There are very few women who are working at the level of Edwards. She is aware of the special meaning of what she is doing. When she can reach back and help, she does. When she can teach, she teaches. She will never take for granted the position that construction has put her.

Edwards is expected to lead the company on the next several projects that Coleman Spohn secures. Edwards thinks of her job as more of a dream than a job. And for her, she gets to live her dream every day. Job well done, Kelly Edwards.●

hen Ricardo Smythe got divorced, he knew he would have to parent all three of his kids on his own. He thought he knew his kids very well, but over the next two years he learned that parenting his daughters was completely different that parenting his boys.

As a masculine man, raised by a masculine man, Smythe understood how to raise boys. Up to the point where he got a divorce, his ex-wife did most of the parenting when it came to his daughters. Sure, he knew how to protect his girls, he also knew how to make them laugh, but all the other stuff was left to his ex-wife.

Smythe did not realize that he was not prepared to parent his girls

Smythe found out that he really did not know his girls the way he knew his son. Sure, he has been with them since birth. He helped change their diapers and saw their first footsteps, but his management of his son was quite different than his management of his girls. Smythe is not alone.

Divorced fathers all over the country are learning that they really do know how to parent girls the way the parent boys.

Yelling or intimidating to control does not work with girls. If fathers are going to parent successfully, they are going to have to become more conscious of how their daughters receive information and communicate from their level.

“I thought I had a good relationship with my girls before my divorce,” Smythe said. “But I quickly learned that I only

“I did not know what to do! My son always just did what I said. My son feared my response, my girls did not. I knew then I was in trouble.”

Fathers are responsible for protection and guidance. Moms are responsible for nurturing and patience. But when Dads start to parent on their own, they must develop the skills needed to be able to relate to their daughters.

Some men change because they feel a greater sense of responsibility to their daughters, and they want to be model examples in their eyes. It makes them want to be more chivalrous daily.

[ HEALTH ] strual cycles. They need to understand hormones changes and the emotions that come with being a female. If they are going to parent their daughters successfully, they are going to have to be able to relate to their daughters. That is no easy task.

Smythe and his girls developed a plan when they did not see eye to eye. They put in place rules of engagement so they would not fall back into their old habits when dealing with difficult topics.

Becoming a girl dad takes time. It might take up to two years to develop the skillset to parent girls successfully. There is a delicate balancing act between being a disciplined father and a nurturing one. A Girls dad knows how to adapt into an all-girls environment.

These dads know how to love and support their daughters and that makes them amazing dads. They give their daughters a sense of belonging and safety.

They also learned a lot about each other during the first two years alone. The girls became more appreciative of their dads’ attempt to connect more on their level. And they also made the adjustment of better explaining their issues so they could stay focused on solving the problem instead of worrying how it was delivered.

After a year of parenting his girls on his own, he noticed that they began to better understand how to deal with them emotionally.

He also had to develop the coping skills that they needed to be able to get past whatever was bothering them.

But Smythe also saw his girls develop some skills to deal with him as well.

“I can be a handful too, and my girls learned how to navigate my personality as well,” Smythe continued, “We learned to co-exist and once we established some ground rules, we never had another blow up.”

Smythe knew when he had his daughters that he softened himself when speaking to them and raising them. He knew that he raised his son differently than how he raised his daughters. What he did not realize is that it took him parenting alone, to make the full change to becoming a girl dad.

Dads love their daughters more to give them the mental and emotional strength to cater to the men's world out there.

It’s a hidden fear that maybe other men who will eventually come into her life will not give her love as much as they can, so they want to fill heart with love before the hard times.

“If I had to give any advice to any man who is about to raise his kids on his own, I would tell them to get ready for the battles, but also get ready for some incredible growth as a person and man,” Smythe said.

“I am a much better parent because of having to do this on my own, and I know my girls and I are in a much better place.”

Divorce is tough on a family and even tougher on the kids.

Smythe and his girls worked through their differences and as a result have a much closer relationship than ever before.

Smythe is proud to be a girl dad and said it might be the best kind of dad there is. ●

[ ENTERTAINMENT ] verybody has a dream. The key to life is taking that dream and making it a reality. With the digital age, dreams are coming true more and more often. For Ronnie Holman, the dream of becoming a movie producer is in full motion and blossoming more and more with each project.

His latest project, Samuel’s Tune, pulls at the heartstrings of the audience as it details the emotional journey of a man struggling to find the meaning of life. Typically, most writers either excel in screenplays (feature films) or stage plays; Holman has found success in both.

Holman always knew he wanted to do something with his passion for writing. After completing his undergraduate degree in journalism, he started to get serious about his craft.

“I learned very early on in my career how to write both screenplays and stage plays. I developed the ability to do both,” Holman said. “If I have to choose between the two, I like writing screenplays more than stage plays.”

“I remember when I turned in my first short film to my professor.

He came back to me and asked me if I was serious. I told him yes,” Holman said. “About two weeks later, he gave me back my script full of red marks, and that began my career.”

Holman plans to screen Samuel’s Tune to a private audience in June 2026. After that he plans to take the short film on the road and enter it into film festivals around the country.

“You cannot be scared of what people are going to say about your work if you want to make it in this business,” Holman said.

“I am trying to take my game to the next level.” Holman continued, “There are levels to this, and if you are going to get to where you are making major productions, you have to be active and work hard to get audiences to your stuff.”

Holman’s goal is to, one day, be as big as any other major producer who makes films. His path to getting it might be easier today than in the past due to the advances made in technology.

And he is not wrong. Most people who create art for a living express the same anxiety about having their work published to be judged. For those who excel, develop a thick skin and use the feedback as fuel to get better. No artist, whether they make movies or music, is free from the public’s wrath if they do inferior work.

30 years ago, if you wanted to make a feature-length film, you had to find someone in Hollywood to make your movie.

You also had to find almost a million dollars in order to get the production shot. Most people did not have access to that kind of money or a way to move to California to pursue their dreams.

Holman understands this concept all too well, so he makes sure that his work represents the best of his ability. The hard work is paying off. Holman has had major success producing plays and films. His most recent play, The Case of Love, was a hit with the audiences that attended the play.

Today, you and a friend can take your two iPhones and, with the help of a few local actors, create a film for next to nothing. Someone used AI to make the world’s first full-length film, and it included no actors, production crew or location shoots to make the film. It cost him $2,000, and it took 2 months to prompt AI to create the right scenes.

Red marks for a writer can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. Depending on how you receive criticism, red marks can be seen as an opportunity to improve your writing, or you can view them as a roadblock to the next step. Holman took on the challenge and embraced the feedback.

[ ENTERTAINMENT ] Holman does not suggest anyone do that; however, he does encourage anyone who wants to create art for a living to give it a shot. Holman states that it does not have to be perfect for anyone to start; there just has to be effort.

Holman’s next fulfilled dream will be a standing ovation at the premiere of his short film later in June. For anyone who has made art, one can only hope that the audience will appreciate the effort that was put into making something out of nothing.

“This is my passion. This is my life. I went to school for it, and I intend to live out my dreams creating theater for people to enjoy,” Holman said.

If he gets his way, Holman plans to take a whole lot of people with him. Hollywood is where you make movies, and Cleveland loves to claim the rise of future stars.

So, Holman is in the right place, at the right time. If you look and see a shooting star, it might be him dreaming up his next project. ●

n the world of professional sports, an elite athlete is trained to see the finish line. But what happens when that line disappears? For Cleveland’s own Stina Aleah, the end of a track career wasn’t a stop sign — it was a starting block for a different kind of race. Today she is one of the most compelling voices in the contemporary art world. But she doesn’t just paint. She refines. She heals. She turns the lead of life’s hardships into the gold of visual masterpieces. She is, by her own description, an alchemist.

THE CATALYST: MOTHERHOOD AND THE LEAP OF FAITH For many, the decision to go full-time as a creative is a slow burn.

For Stina, it was a lightning strike delivered by the birth of her son.

“I wanted to leave him something more than just the hustle of life,” she says. “I didn’t want him to see me going to work and being unhappy. He was my catalyst to say, ‘No more Plan B.’” That decision brought an unexpected teacher along. Her son’s perspective on the world — raw, visual, unfiltered by adult logic — reshaped how Stina sees emotion itself. “He told me once, ‘Mom, you’re dumping my bucket. You’re supposed to fill my bucket.’ As a toddler, he already had a visual for what it felt like to be hurt. That never left my head. Children see things differently until the world takes it away. My art is my way of making sure I never grow out of that.”

FROM ELITE ATHLETE TO SELF-TAUGHT MASTER

Stina’s path to the canvas was anything but conventional.

She didn’t spend her youth in art schools; she spent it on the long-jump runway. A broken leg in high school landed her in an art classroom simply because it had double doors wide enough for her wheelchair. What happened next changed everything.

Her junior year art teacher noticed a young woman struggling — not just physically, but mentally — and gently encouraged her to try a project, then another. “I fell in love with creating,” Stina says. “And I realized it was healing me mentally while I was healing physically.” That teacher lit a flame she could not put out.

She wanted to stay in art. But as a senior, she could no longer take that teacher’s class — it was offered only to juniors. In a new class, with a different teacher, the environment was anything but nurturing. That teacher placed a stronger student’s work in front of her and said, without blinking: “There’s always someone better.”

He meant it as a ceiling. She treated it as fuel.

“I have to credit my sports background,” she reflects. “I know what it takes to make it to state, to win a title, to earn a scholarship. I applied that same work ethic to oil painting and decided to get so good I couldn’t be denied.”

That discipline — the willingness to commit fully to one lane — is the lesson at the center of her story. Her father’s voice has also never left her: “There is greatness in you.

You just have to bring it out.”

So, Stina made a decision. “I decided to get so good I couldn’t be denied.”

PUBLIC MURALS AND THE MIRROR SHE HOLDS UP You’ve likely seen Stina’s work while driving through Cleveland. Whether it’s the Underground Railroad mural in Bedford or the collaborative Wear the Mask wall on Wood Hill and Mount Carmel, her public art is a love letter to her hometown. But the process behind it is as important as the finished piece. Months of town halls, Zoom meetings, and community conversations shape every stroke. “I want to make sure that when they look at the piece, they can see themselves,” she says.

[ ART ] arrived uninvited at the Black Lives Matter mural on East 93rd during the pandemic — no credentials, just a felt obligation — she free -handed lettering in scorching heat while people whispered, “Who is that?” That single bold act of showing up led directly to her first major mural commission. Opportunity rarely sends an invitation. It rewards the people who are already in the room.

REVOLUTION, REVELATION, AND THE WORK SHE WILL NEVER SELL Among her many works, one stands completely apart: a selfportrait titled Revolution or Revelation. It is the largest piece she has ever completed, and she will never sell it. “It represents the shedding of labels,” she explains. “The old self breaking away from who I really am. I’m revolting against every standard put on me — abusive relationships, the ‘black sheep’ label, the voices that tried to define my limits. That piece is the purge. It’s for my son when he grows up.”

Everything she has built, she has built with that same long-game intention. “When you are authentic, and it’s okay to be vulnerable, you build the right community — and then the right things attract to you.”

REFRAMING THE CULTURE: THE CHILDHOOD I CARRIED

Stina’s current series, a 10-part collection titled The Childhood I Carried, moves beyond trauma to recover the quiet, joyful textures of Black life. Her painting Please Don’t Bump the Ends — a Black mother standing on tired feet at the end of a long day, hot comb in hand, making sure her daughter looks right, stopped people mid-scroll. We Have Food at Home, and its companion piece, McDonald’s Money, offer the same gentle reframe: what felt like deprivation was often protection. What looked like a limitation was love in disguise.

“We are so connected through memory,” she says. “I posted that painting and people went wild. We’re so connected as a community — and I want to use that to help us find the love in what we sometimes misread as pain.” For readers of this women’s issue, that message lands with particular weight: the women in these paintings are our mothers, our aunts, our grandmothers. Stina is asking us to look at them again — and see them whole.
