NEWS Trump Boasts his Isolationist Policies Before an Opposing United Nations Joey Weslo, Assignment Reporter President Trump, is this the way America’s global dominance ends; not with a bang, not with a whimper, but in laughter?

President Donald Trump pontificated before the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly of having in two years, “accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country.”

Members of COD’s Model United Nations were surprised by his boast which managed to unite an often divided chamber of feuding, self-interested leaders into a cascade of light mockery. Their laughter symbolized a united opposition against Trump’s anti-globalist policies.

A populist who campaigned on the predicate of America being the laughing-stock of the world now found himself at the butt-end of his own joke.

College of DuPage Political Science Professor Christian Goergen warned of Trump’s rejection of globalization and preference of isolationism over multilateral cooperation.

“Nationalists like Trump want bilateralism because they believe they can use their nation’s power to intimidate those they negotiate with,” he said. “However, only global solutions can solve global problems. Climate change, multi-national terrorism and nuclear de-proliferation can only be addressed through multilateralism. What happens in one part of the globe directly affects another. Before WWI, bilateral treaties between European countries resulted in a situation of insecurity that was destined to collapse into war.”

Goergen founded COD’s Model United Nations club 22 years ago to inspire students to learn about international diplomacy and see the world from a different perspective.

Current club President Anna Gorman said the U.N. provides an important forum for world leaders to engage each other.

“People criticize the U.N. for not having the authority to enforce their rules, but it provides a place to discuss

global issues and propose solutions. When you’re dealing with de-stabilized regions, approaching with a united force makes a stronger resolution.

Any unilateral attempt is limited in its fundamental structure.”

Gorman said the club immerses students in the global discussion. She represented Russia on nuclear proliferation when the club visited Emory University in Georgia last year.

Club member Kevin Ashley represents the Sixth Committee, which considers all legal standings in the U.N., especially humanitarian law.

“The club provides political understanding by us representing a delegation to a mockU.N. and arguing our country’s position in front of a General Assembly,” said Ashley.

He explained the benefits of multilateral cooperation.

“With a worldwide community paying attention to events like ethnic cleansing in Myanmar, we can address issues in a more effective matter. We can hold that coun-

try’s government responsible, or involve peace-keeping units if necessary.”

Representing an existential threat to multilateralism, anti-globalist waves have led backlashes against international bodies and brought success to anti-establishment politicians. Seen in the UK’s Brexit, Trump’s victory in America, Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines and anti-immigration advocates across Europe, populists hail the call for protectionism and global regression.

“As guardians of the common good, we also have a duty to promote and support a reformed, reinvigorated

and strengthened multilateral system,” said U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres before the General Assembly.“Those who see their neighbors as dangerous may cause a threat where there was none. Those who close their borders to regular migration only fuel the work of traffickers. And those who ignore human rights in combating terrorism tend to breed the very extremism they are trying to end,” he said.

Goergen dismantled anti-globalists fear as a misunderstanding of the U.N.’s actual power.

“There’s no merit to fearing a big world government threaten-

ing nations’ sovereignty,” he said. “The operating annual budget of the U.N. is only $6.5 billion. That’s less than the city of Chicago.”

Goergen believes anti-globalists are opposing the wrong people because globalization is driven by multinational corporations who make greater profits by going global.

He believes reversing the process would be catastrophic for global stability.

Ashley agreed, “I understand Trump’s position where America needs its sovereignty and self-dependence.

However, no country has the means to be truly self-efficient in the modern global

Gorman added, “There is a danger in becoming more isolated. Historically, isolationist nations have fallen behind economically.”

Trump has implemented protectionist policies under his direction to “Make America Great Again.”

Globalists see every diplomatic concession to protect domestic industry as undermining America’s global hegemony.

As influence is relinquished, more willing nations are stepping into the power vacuum.

Goergen pointed to Trump’s withdrawal from the Human Rights Council, UNESCO, the UNRWA and the Paris Climate Agreement as setting a dangerous precedent.

“It encourages nationalist and populist countries to follow. It provides authoritarian leaders the excuse they are looking for,” he said. “However, it can unite other countries to come together and oppose such behavior.”

Ashley explained Trump’s predecessor, President Barack Obama, showed a different, more successful approach in drawing up the Paris Climate Agreement and mak-

ing it non-binding.

“That was the only way to get so much of the world to agree,” he said. “Trump made the point America was doing more for the agreement, but that was precedent to inspire other countries.

Now you see countries like China and France taking the opportunity to increase their power and show the rest of the world they can do it better than the U.S.” French President Emmanuel Macron used his General Assembly address to reassure the world of France’s global leadership.

“I do not accept the erosion of multilateralism and don’t accept our history unraveling,” said Macron.

In a statement directed at Trump’s isolationist policies, he urged world leaders not to sign trade agreements with those who don’t support the Paris Climate Agreement.

Similar commitment is witnessed in the persistence of supporting nations trying to save the Iran nuclear deal after Trump’s withdrawal and threat of economic sanctions for businesses that deal with Iran.

The U.N. was founded upon the ashes of WWII and manufac-

tured to maximize the power of the war’s victors.

Goergen believes one way the U.N. can accommodate anti-globalist fears is by reforming the antiquated Security Council. He believes the permanent members’ authority to veto any decision too often leads to stagnation.

The Security Council no longer reflects the reality of the world balance.

He believes they should increase the permanent members to include a developing-nation. The British and French seat would be replaced with a European Union seat. South America must get representation, and Asia and the Middle-East need a voice.

Also, the possibility of including the African Union could promote unity on their continent.

“With the current permanent members’ veto powers, they will refuse to submit any of their power.

This provides a moral problem for the Security Council delegitimizing their authority,” said Goergen.

The greatest problem both globalists and anti-globalists want addressed is the

U.N.’s sovereignty issue.

No country wants to give authority to an international body that can persecute its citizens.

However, the U.N. charter states each country should have and respect national sovereignty and the U.N. is established to protect it. The body’s laws and institutions have helped foster global stability resulting in a more peaceful world than 50 years ago.

Gorman stated, “If the U.N. mandated their rules be followed, nations would fail to cooperate. The point is to create a discussion between nations.

The only way the U.N. can apply pressure is by promoting economic sanctions against un-cooperating nations like Myanmar for their human rights abuses against their Rohingya Muslim minorities.

She believes anti-globalists like Trump shouldn’t fear the jurisdiction of international bodies, but should embrace their justice as a way to provide security and global stability.

Ashley said, “The U.N. only draws the line where grave abuses hurt humanity as

a whole. You cannot make yourself a nuclear power when you shouldn’t be. You can’t slaughter minorities just because they think differently than you, and you can’t sign brutal laws to increase your power while your citizens suffer in poverty. The U.N. is an observer that intervenes when necessary; it’s not an authoritarian power dictating what to do.”

Legal frameworks like nuclear disarmament in North Korea and the Iran-Nuke deal are predicated upon mutual support and trust.

“Trump pulling out of the Iran-Nuke deal was short-sighted and impulsive. With all of the nations who came together to support the deal, the U.S. cannot afford to be isolated on this issue,” said Gorman.

Goergen believes Iran has incentive to stick to the deal, and the IAEA has determined Iran has complied in the deal’s requirements.

Multilateral cooperation provides economic incentives for nations to comply.

The U.N. can pressure countries to address human rights violations by making it mutually beneficial to

comply.

Ashley insisted the Syrian civil war is a perfect example of how the U.N. can maintain global security and protect citizens against violence.

“The moment the U.N. takes up a deciding position on who should win, cooperation will halt. Their role should strictly be humanitarian; aiding the civilian population, setting up camps for the displaced, and helping refugees integrate into other countries.”

Globalists see accepting the responsibilities that come with power as a sign of strength. They see America turning away from its global commitments exemplifying its further digression into parochial policies.

Goergen believes only multilateral cooperation provides the antidote to global inequality.

“Nationalists like Trump believe nations should only look after their self-interests.

However, does power come with responsibility to help those around the world? Morally, should the strong and powerful intimidate the weak, or ashould they help (nurture) their success.”

Casual College Drinker or Borderline Alcoholic?

How the Ccollege Experience Influences Alcohol Abuse Reanna Comiso, Features Editor It is a Saturday night in Champaign, Ill. Students at the University of Illinois have come up with a brilliant idea.

Slurring their words and struggling to keep their balance, they circle a lone tree stump.

It is the center for the next big drinking game on campus, rightfully called “Stump.” The goal is simple. You take a hammer, toss it up, catch the handle midair and hammer a nail into the stump, all in one swift motion. If you drop the hammer, you drink. If the nail gets completely pressed in, you lose. And then you drink again.

In 2015, the Princeton Review ranked the U of I one of the largest party schools in the nation. But the school is just one example of the collegiate drinking phenomenon.

College and binge-drinking go hand-in-hand. It is nothing more than a little fun to relieve the stress of being a college student. According to Michael Spell, a junior at Illinois State University, drinking is just part of the college experience.

“Some people say,

‘the weekend starts on Wednesday’ at ISU,” said Spell. “There are people walking around [on campus] from place to place all night, and you can tell they are looking for parties.”

Imagining herds of drunk college kids wandering the night searching for their party is uncomfortable, but not surprising.

About 40 percent of modern college students fit the medical diagnosis for Alcohol Use Disorder under the definition given by the latest Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders used by mental health professionals.

In past editions of the DSM, addiction fell in two categories: substance abuse and substance dependence.

Under the new edition, there is one diagnosis for both abuse and dependence, which is Alcohol Use Disorder.

The diagnosis can be mild, moderate or severe. Under the old diagnosis, about 31 percent of students met criteria for alcohol abuse, with about 6 percent reaching dependent status.

“Alcohol is a drug

that has a complex effect on the body,” said Richard Voss, a psychology professor at the College of DuPage.

“It acts as a central nervous system depressant.

It also lessens anxiety in a way that decreases inhibitions. A little of that can help people relax and be more social, but too much can contribute to the behavioral excesses and dangerous behavior we associate with alcohol abuse.”

Alcohol abuse on college campuses can be directly linked to binge drinking, the consumption of large amounts of alcohol in short periods of time. The Centers for Disease and Control Prevention states that one in six adults binge drinks around four times a month, with each binge consisting of an average of seven alcoholic drinks. Six people die every day from alcohol poisoning.

While it can be tricky to pinpoint which students are dependent on alcohol and which use it to relieve stress, the social climate surrounding partying can become unhealthy.

From hazing, parties and drinking games like

“Stump,” the mindless alcohol consumption can have lasting, deadly consequences.

“Alcohol is admittedly used as sort of a coping tool for stress,” said Jason Hackiewicz, a junior at the University of Illinois. “There are [students] who are legitimate alcoholics though, and it is maybe one of the most heartbreaking things to watch.”

Much of the drinking can be attributed to stress and peer pressure. Peer pressure as an emerging adult is complex. It is now manifested in societal expectations, even if they are inherently negative. The more someone is surrounded by it, the more likely it is that they will partake and go overboard, said Hackiewicz.

“I think that it is kind of a social norms thing,” said Hackiewicz. “It can be a bit difficult to tell people to cut back on [drinking] when it clearly looks like they have an issue, because you don't want to seem like a buzzkill.”

selves and their responsibilities in general. “I know tons of people who party four days in a row and still have an almost perfect GPA, and I know people who never party who do not do well in school at all,” said Spell.

Mental health professionals and psychologists feel there is less emphasis on peer pressure and more placed on the expectations of transitioning to adulthood.

“They are facing many of the pressures and expectations of adulthood, and are asked to make important decisions regarding their lives and their future,” said Voss. “Add to this the financial pressure that may make

working a part- or even full-time job necessary, and it’s hardly surprising students sometimes feel overwhelmed.”

Whether it is a personal or social problem, college drinking still has adverse community effects. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states around 1,825 college students die from alcohol-related injuries, mainly in car accidents per year.

Another 696,000 students experience an assault with someone who has been drinking.

About 97,000 students reported being sexually assaulted by someone intoxicated.

bat the drinking problem without much luck. Many schools try creative ways to curb alcohol consumption, including offering bartending classes, awarding perks to designated drivers and even giving students grants for their parties to purchase non-alcohol related items, according to TIME. While doing these things may encourage safer drinking habits, Voss said it fails to address the underlying issues.

“There are no simple solutions, but I do think it’s important for colleges to do what they can to educate students about the dangers inherent in alcohol and drug use, as well as the many healthier coping strategies that are available,” said Voss.

Voss suggests going back to the basics with increased mental health counseling, stress management workshops and teaching students about the real dangers of binge-drinking are realistic ways of addressing the issue.

There is likely no way to stop the partying, but teaching students there are other ways of coping with the stress of being a student will hold the most weight.

It is hard to tell which students will grow out of their “party” phase and go on to live normal lives, but it is important to treat every individual equally to ensure their safety and well-being are not affected by the potential dangers of alcohol abuse.

Fighter: How Domestic Violence Fueled her Advocacy.

Alison Pfaff, Photo Editor As her boyfriend’s hands clamped down on her neck, Meggie Hernandez-Zayas started to see spots.

At the same time, her thoughts became clear.

One of two things was true. She’d never leave the Glen Ellyn apartment alive. If she did, she was never coming back. Not to the apartment. Not to the relationship.

Her nandez-Zayas did escape from that apartment. She’s spent her life since then helping other women who have not yet escaped, or are still dealing with the trauma they faced.

Fighter.

Survivor.

Advocate. These words may describe many, but not as much as they describe HernandezZayas. A paralegal student at COD, she has turned her experiences with domestic violence and sexual assault into being an advocate for state legislation, survivor support and education.

Hernandez-Zaya’s decision to return to school after graduating from North Central College in 2013 stems from her passion for to help fellow survivors.

“In 2015 I started getting involved in legislation and the state 10

government because of the budget crisis. I was trying to find out who my reps were, who my senators were and how the process of government works.

It snowballed into learning how does legislation function, how do you file a piece of legislation. What is the process from the moment it’s filed to the moment it’s signed?

How do you draft a piece of legislation?

“I started getting involved with that and the grassroots organizing,” Hernandez-Zayas continued “With filling out witness slips and creating actions in our state government.”

Her nandez-Zayas is also a survivor of domestic violence. In a four-year span, she experienced two abusive partners. Like so many women who find themselves in an abusive relationship, she tried many times to leave her first partner.

It took more than two years.

“That was a very manipulative relationship, emotionally abusive. It was sexually coercive.

There was a lot of sex abuse in that relationship, and that one I left six times. Six times was

a charm. On average, it takes a woman seven times to leave a domestically violent or dating violent relationship,” she said.

Hernandez-Zayas’ second relationship came soon after the first one, which is common for survivors of domestic violence.

“That relationship was emotionally abusive, verbally abusive and very physically abusive,” she said. It culminated in him trying to strangle me to death in his apartment in Glen Ellyn.”

Throughout all of this, she volunteered for Mutual Ground in Aurora, Ill., where she received an Advocacy Certification. Mutual Ground is an organization that educates and provides services to those affected by domestic violence and sex abuse. She also was an events planner for Women at Risk International, which gives women who have been trafficked protection through intervention projects.

“I have had this background, even though this is happening to me behind closed doors, and people who I worked with and advocated with

Meggie Hernandez-Zayas: Fighter and volunteered with didn’t know.Because of all the training I went through, and because of everything I learned and researched, and the presentations I was giving as an educator, I learned a lot about what trauma does to people and things to expect with my trauma,” Hernandez-Zayas said.

She credits this training with why she is so open with her own story, speaking at various colleges and universities, such as Benedictine University and North Central College, about her own experiences.

second partner became physical in August 2014, he squeezed her hand so hard she heard a pop.

“That was the first injury he gave me that kind of never went away,” Hernandez-Zayas said.

Following this, a cyst began to grow on her tendon sheath, located between her pinky finger and ring finger, which she had removed with surgery.

“It was very frustrating,” she said. “My hand was bandaged up, and I couldn’t play the piano, and that was always like catharsis. I am a classically-trained pianist.

I have been trained since kindergarten, and I couldn’t play piano because my hand was all bandaged up.”

Her nandez-Zayas then turned to photography, founding “Reclaiming Me,” which is a photo series where her, along with other survivors, choose a word that represents them after abuse, as well as their stories.

The first photo taken was of her on top of a parking garage in Wheaton by her husband.

“I brought my leather jacket and my motorcycle helmet and had my hand bandaged. I felt so cool and

FEATURES powerful. I had [my husband] write ‘Fighter’ across my neck, because that’s where I had been strangled.”

Reclaiming Me has continued to photograph survivors, both publicly and anonymous, with survivors choosing a word that represents them.

“We are kind of ‘defined’ by this moment [of abuse], but that is not all of us, what we are,” she said. “That is one chapter in our book; that’s not our whole book.”

Today, along with other efforts, Hernandez-Zayas as well as

her colleague Annie Wegrzyn continue advocacy by researching to propose legislation on a solution to Transcript Notation, where students at colleges and universities would have a mark on their transcript indicating if there was some type of disciplinary action taken, such as sexual assault, etc. Many survivor organizations are against this. Some of the problems with this legislation include not specifying the offense that occurred, and the risk for lawsuits if the notation bars perpetrators from getting

into the school.

She also has in the past contacted former COD Trustee David Olsen to ask for his support on various bills. Olsen was supportive of her efforts and would come to her events, such as Take Back the Night at North Central College in 2017.

Reclaiming Me continues to advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and the photo series has been displayed on various Illinois college campuses throughout.

Lack of Urgency Shown in Chicago Cubs Player's Domestic Abuse Investigation Kimberly Wilson, Opinion Editor Recent accusations of domestic abuse from his ex-wife have left Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell on an extended paid administrative leave administered by Major League Baseball. The league is investigating the alleged incidences

by Melisa Reidy-Russell. But the lack of public outrage and more punitive measures by the Chicago team underlines the carelessness surround-

ing abuse accusations.

Cubs Manager Joe Maddon’s response after reading Reidy-Russell’s blog post, in which she detailed the abuse she faced, is telling.

After stating domestic abuse is “horrible” and that he felt for Reidy-Russell, Maddon went on to say, “But I don't know enough about the other side. I'm waiting for the full report to come out; then we all can draw a conclusion."

A thorough investigation of Reidy-Russell’s claims by the league is the right course of action. But just placing him on paid leave is not the ideal way to show you’re taking these allegations seriously. This is not the first time Russell’s faced them.

Last year, after Reidy-Russell accused the baseball player of infidelity, her friend commented on social media that he was also abusing her. An

open-ended investigation by the MLB followed, but Russell was never suspended by the Cubs.

The team also made the questionable decision to trade for Aroldis Chapman in 2016 on their way to winning the World Series. Chapman faced domestic abuse allegations for which he was suspended for 30 games prior to the trade.

As for the Russell investigation that’s reportedly ongoing, the MLB has not released any further updates since it began last June.

Even now, how much regret is Russell really going to feel while he sits on the sideline, waiting for this to blow over--again--while a steady stream of hundreds of thousands of dollars makes its way into his bank account?

Maddon’s response also shows the problematic attitude much of society has towards women’s claims of abuse. Too many times the default response in these situations is to not believe the accuser. Even in cases where there is damning evidence, the woman is still blamed for the

man’s actions.

How a situation like this has adversely impacted the woman is often an afterthought.

The focus is on how these accusations are going to negatively affect the man’s life even if he is guilty.

Furthermore, guilt is often seen as neither here nor there. A poll conducted by NPR/ PBS NewsHour/ Marist Poll found that 58 percent of republicans would still support confirming Brett Kavanaugh even if the sexual assault allegations against him were confirmed to be true.

It is this practice that continues to fuel women’s reluctance towards coming forward.

We’ve seen far more aggressive action taken against athletes who were standing up for their rights and the rights of millions of American citizens. One would think an accusation as serious as domestic violence should be met with a similar reaction.

There’s a clear need to reevaluate the priorities of this country when an athlete protesting widespread injustice is treated more

harshly than an athlete accused of physical and emotional abuse against his then-wife.

According to the National Coalition for Domestic Violence, one in three women suffers some form of physical abuse at the hands of an intimate partner. There is also a correlation between domestic violence and higher occurrences of depression and suicidal behavior.

A lack of liability will allow for the continuation of abuse against women. We cannot keep jeopardizing the safety of countless women in this country by having such a lopsided and laissez-faire attitude towards the perpetrators of these crimes.

Resulting from the sexism and misogyny that still permeates our society, the habit of automatically not believing female accusers must end. Movements such as ‘MeToo’ and ‘TimesUp’ have called attention to this, and we must keep advocating for women’s rights.

When we continue to fail to hold abusers accountable, we continue to fail our women.

OPINION A Bittersweet Victory for Women Everywhere, But is it Enough?

Reanna Comiso, Features Editor Bill Cosby will spend the next three to ten years in prison after being found guilty in the drugging and sexual assault of Andrea Constand at his home 14 years ago. But in the end, no amount of jail time is long enough. It will never be enough while hundreds of thousands of perpetrators walk away with clean hands.

“The day has come, the time has come,” stated Steven O’Neill, the judge who sentenced Cosby.

For the millions of women who have had their lives shattered by sexual abuse, the words echoed in that Pennsylvania courtroom were a bittersweet victory. They created a need for justice for Constand.

"Bill Cosby took my beautiful, healthy young spirit and crushed it. He robbed me of my health and vitality, my open nature and my trust in myself and others," Constand stated in her open letter to the court.

The suffering she felt at the hands of Cosby is a pain many

women know all too well. For the one in six women who will fall victim to an attempted or completed rape, the familiar feeling of trauma, regret and guilt resonates throughout.

During the trial, O’Neill had decided to raise the maximum sentencing from three years to ten years, while also not allowing bail. Cosby must also pay a a $25,000 fine and reimburse the prosecution costs. Labeled by the court as a “sexually violent predator,” he must register for the rest of his life as a sex offender and attend lifetime sex offender counseling.

Cosby’s defense attorney, Joseph Green, tried to sway O’Neill’s opinion by claiming Cosby was too old and nearly blind to serve jail time. He requested house-arrest, but O’Neill followed his duty to impose a just punishment.

Cosby’s sentencing is bittersweet: it is a step in the right direction for finding justice for victims, but it is a gruesome reminder that a majority of sexual abusers will never

face jail time or punishment for their irredeemable crimes.

Many perpetrators of rape and sexual assault get off without punishment, especially those with fame, fortune and large platforms. According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, 99 percent of perpetrators of sexual violence will walk free without ever receiving punishment.

If they do receive jail time, we experience cases like Brock Turner, who was released three months into his inadequate six-month sentence.

In cases like Turner’s, where his punishment was disgustingly lenient, the well-being of the perpetrator is considered more than that of the victim.

Prison would have had a “severe impact” on Turner, but what about the impact that was left on the victim?

According to the Central Minnesota Sexual Assault Center, vic-

tims of sexual abuse are three times more likely to suffer from depression, six times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, four times more likely to contemplate suicide and 26 times more likely to abuse drugs.

Where is the concern for their well-being?

While Cosby was only convicted for one report of sexual abuse, over 60 women have come forward with their own stories.

People ask, “Why did the women not report the crime when it happened? Why are they coming out years later?” The fact of the matter is simple: solidarity matters.

Women do not come out with their stories when they are the only one being vocal. They are scared of repercussions, both verbal and violent. They are aware the chances of their abusers receiving legal punishment is slim.

of being pegged a liar, money-hungry or attention-seeking. They do not want to be told if they acted differently, dressed differently or existed differently, it never would have happened. They do not want to be made into a villain.

With the momentum of the #MeToo movement, victims of Cosby’s crimes came forward years later because they finally felt safe. They finally felt they had a platform to tell their truth. For once, they felt like

their voices would be heard. For every person accusing them of placing false-blame, there are a hundred people who support their courage.

The attitude toward sexual assault in this country is beginning to change after hundreds of years of silence.

Women are speaking out against the injustice they faced at the hands of those stronger than them, and we must listen.

Political bias in Islamic Studies is a disservice to students Professor Hesham Shehab, Adjunct Faculty, College of DuPage ern colleges, closely monitor those departments. When such departments are dominated by liberal professors, as Sunstein believes, CAIR and MSA would be successful in lobbying against any professor who criticizes political Islam and may brand that professor as an Islamophobe.

Secondly, liberal professors know that their departments may lose funding from Saudi Arabia and rich Arab Gulf states if they were to criticize political Islam. Many Middle Eastern and Islamic

Studies departments in the West receive grants from rich Arab states.

Now as a case in point is Professor John Esposito who founded the Hasib Sabbagh Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding in 1993 at Georgetown University, near Washington, D.C. The late Sabbagh; then a Palestinian tycoon, supported Esposito’s project by donating one US million dollars in order to establish the Center in the 1990s. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the Saudi Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal donated ten million US dollars to boost that center. Esposito changed the name of the center to Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.

Esposito, in his lectures and writings, promotes a skewed version of the Islamic history and culture. Students deserve a more balanced education.

world in all branches of knowledge. Much of that knowledge was discovered by Muslims while other knowledge was translated from other cultures including the Greeks and the Persians. Muslims had synthesized and transmitted that knowledge to the entire Western world after most of the knowledge of the Greeks was lost.

However, Islamism is a modern political phenomenon. It is an ideology that has been promoted by the Muslim Brotherhood and other fundamentalist since 1928. Such political phenomenon

should be dissected and presented through objective and critical methods to college students.

The Islamic culture had laid more than one good brick in the wall of the human culture.

It is a source of wealth and diversity in the American society.

Today, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies departments in the West ought to contribute to the Middle East and the Islamic World on their journey of reform and progress, not play to the tune of some rich Gulf autocrats.
