THE ACLU’S FRONTLINE BATTLE: CHALLENGING TRUMP’S OVERREACH THE LEGAL EFFORTS TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF ASYLUM SEEKERS Joey Weslo, Assignment Reporter The three mighty arms swing in precarious balance.

If one becomes too heavy, the others have responsibility to level our democracy and safeguard the constitution.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive action denying migrants the right to claim asylum unless they enter the country through legal points of entry. Arguing the asylum process has been abused, becoming detrimental to U.S. interests, Trump claimed the same national security executive powers he used to implement his

travel ban.

“The continuing and threatened mass migration of aliens with no basis for admission into the United States through our southern border has precipitated a crisis and undermines the integrity of our borders,” said Trump.

He said his action would protect the asylum system for those who have truly fled persecution.

As Trump’s executive arm swings into motion, the American Civil Liberties Union has brought his proclamation before federal court arguing the president’s action is

unconstitutional. The ACLU is dedicated to protecting constitutional rights and sees the judiciary’s responsibility to counter-balance executive overreach.

Ed Yohnka, director of communication and public policy at ACLU Illinois, believes the checks and balances our democracy depends upon do not come with self-enforcement.

“It is our responsibility to bring a challenge to court,” he said.

“When the legislature is doing oversight and the judiciary is looking into executive overreach it exemplifies a healthy democracy and the rule of law being enforced.”

Yohnka believes the ACLU’s lawsuit protecting asylum rights and opposing Trump’s travel ban is a reflection of our national values.

“We have always held ourselves

as a beacon of hope and resilience,” he said. “We have been a light for people around the world to come to when they’re in trouble.

We can’t close us off just because Trump doesn’t approve.

“I would bring every single border enforcement agent, and I would greet (migrants in the caravan) with open arms and process them in a day.”

Under the Naturalization and Asylum Act, people have up to a year to claim asylum from anywhere in the country.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, asylum requests by migrants from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras increased 25 percent in 2017, representing a total of 78,564 credible fear applications.

the U.N. Refugee Convention of 1951. This establishes a refugee as anyone who has fled persecution in their home country. This persecution can be on the basis of race, religion, nationality or country of origin, membership in a political group or in a particular social group, or their political opinions.

Trump’s intent is to deter any future migrants from crossing the border. Trump lowered the U.S. refugee admissions by 20,000 in 2017 to a total of 50,000, even though the administration admitted less than half the number.

Trump’s order requires migrants immediately claim asylum upon entry and holds them to tougher restrictions to qualify for asylum status. Those denied could qualify for a “withholding of removal,” a suspension of deportation revocable at any time.

Yohnka believes Trump lacks the authority to change the law.

“Under both national and inter-

national law, there isn’t justification for closing our borders to asylum seekers,” he said. “The U.S. is party to international treaties on the rights of refugees and displaced persons.

When you’re party to an international agreement it becomes integrated into your domestic law. You can’t say you don’t want to follow just because Trump is president. It doesn’t work that way.”

Yohnka said historically, the executive branch has exemplified latitude in how it enforces immigration. Each administration has prioritized standards for admission and deportation. The ACLU believes Trump illegally broke precedent by opposing the written law.

“What the Trump administration has done is they have decided everyone who is eligible should be deported,” said Yohnka. “If I want to look tough and deport people, I’m targeting people I know, and these are the people who have been checking in with me every six

months. By simply treating everyone the same, this doesn’t assess one’s safety, security or what their circumstances are.

“In our lawsuits, we are arguing this is not something they can do.

They can’t say they want to enforce the law and are therefore rewriting it to do so.”

The ACLU successfully challenged the Trump administration’s guidance limiting asylum on the basis of domestic abuse or gang violence in Grace v. Sessions.

Yohnka believes fierce litigation is crucial to protecting the rights of endangered and vulnerable people.

He said stories from individual migrants have painted a narrative of governments without control over gangs and violent crime. He pointed to people who are specifically targeted for what they believe, who they are, or for refusing to participate in criminal activities.

“When your government can’t protect you, and the alternative is death, it’s imperative people have a refuge and a place to travel to and feel safe,” said Yohnka. “This is what the U.S. has always been.

I hear politicians say immigrants should stay where they are, but then don’t want to do the work of helping these governments handle crime. We haven’t done enough to protect and strengthen the democracy in these countries. This had led to this lawlessness, and this is what these people are fleeing.”

Yohnka said some Americans have been fooled into thinking the asylum process is easy for the seeker.

After someone turns themselves in to seek asylum, Border Patrol conducts the initial credible fear exam to establish the merits of their fear of persecution claim. If successful, seekers must go before an immigration court to pursue asylum. Lawyers spend months looking for documentation and corroborating evidence to present

a credible fear case. They often receive assistance from international relief agencies and social service agencies in the countries of origin to collect the necessary evidence.

Yohnka said cases brought before judges have increasingly seen arbitrary decisions based on where one claims asylum. Success rates vary greatly based on jurisdiction.

“It demonstrates there is a perverse bias that creeps into the system depending on where someone is,” said Yohnka. “This makes it more difficult when you have judges applying different standards in different places with different levels of evidence needed.”

Legal points of entry like San Diego have wait times as long as five weeks to claim asylum. Border inspectors are processing only about 100 asylum claims a day even though 10,000 are expected to be in wait. Family detention centers are filled to capacity, stranding families seeking asylum.

In a statement the ACLU released, “We and our partners have documented numerous instances of Border Patrol agents arbitrarily and unreasonably delaying access to the asylum process by threatening, intimidating, providing misinformation, and using physical force to turn away people seeking asylum.”

The frustration grows as more migrants compete for what little resources are made available to them. “(Trump’s) administration has been choking off points of entry,” said Yohnka. “They are not placing the appropriate amount of people, and therefore, must tell people to wait. Stranded on bridges or isolated areas, people get tired of waiting and try to cross elsewhere.

These are broad swaths of dangerous desert. There are traffickers who will subject migrants to all kinds of horrors.” continued on page 6

Border Patrol agents arrested 23,121 migrant family members in October, the highest monthly total of Trump’s presidency. A further 60,745 were arrested or deemed inadmissible at the border.

In the last five years, 75 percent of asylum cases brought by citizens from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were denied.

Yohnka said Trump’s order will not affect unaccompanied minors.

They will still be transferred to the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Children accompanied by parents will be housed in tent camps along the border. Yohnka believes the administration is going to violate Flores V. Reno, which prohibits holding children in detention more than 20 days, arguing they had no other choice.

He sees Trump’s national security argument that was already upheld once in court as being the more challenging defense to dismantle.

“I think using terms like “invasion” and sending the military to the border was a political stunt,” said Yohnka. “He lied about the caravan every day. Trump thinks he suddenly has the capacity to

rewrite the constitution and birthright citizenship through an executive order. There’s not a defined, identifiable national security interest the commander-in-chief is trying to enforce.”

Yohnka said the national security defense used to uphold the travel ban before the Supreme Court was supposed to result in an analysis and improvement of vetting procedures. However, the administration has failed to comply with these guidelines.

Yohnka believes the implausibility inherent in Trump’s travel ban is even more egregious within his new order. He argues the same defense cannot be proven before a court with respect to asylum seekers.

“The reality is this president and administration doesn’t seem to have a respect for the Constitution.

We’ve sued Trump 150 times since he’s been in office,” said Yohnka.

The ACLU has challenged Trump’s executive overreach on the travel ban, family separation and restricted medical rights to youths in Office of Refugee Resettlement custody. They also filed litigation after the ban on transgender people serving in the military, and efforts to roll back rights for

the LGBTQ community.

When the ACLU perceives executive overreach, they search for people whose constitutional rights have been infringed upon. Everything is decided upon the language used in the executive order. A case must be presented proving the language conflicts with applicable law and previous court rulings.

To garner public support, the ACLU focuses on the personal story of who is harmed by the president’s actions.

“When we represented MS L v. ICE, trying to reunite an asylum-seeking mother with her daughter in Chicago, we held a rally on Federal Plaza in March with only around 100 people,”

said Yohnka. “By June, we held a rally at Daley Plaza with 50,000 people fighting for the same cause.

People’s awareness helped support grow, especially coverage like when politicians used the phrase, “kids in cages.”

Yohnka said students can become ACLU members or just follow their cases on social media. He stressed the importance of discussing these issues with friends and family and spreading the message whenever help is in need.

“Judges make decisions based on laws and the constitution, however, they also can’t help but be moved when there are 50,000 people standing and protesting outside their door.”

EDITOR’S NOTE - UPDATE: 11/20/18 – U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar in San Francisco issued a temporary restraining order against Trump’s executive order to deny migrants the right to claim asylum who enter the country illegally.

The restraining order will remain in place until a December court hearing brought by the ACLU, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Center for Constitutional Rights against Trump’s executive order can be argued.

BABY SHARK TANK Madison Venckus, News Editor COD student and mother, Ashley Spratt, strives to keep her children safe and healthy as any mom would. After trying a variety of different over-the-counter medications and supplements, Spratt took it upon herself to create a healthy alternative to generic medications.

She looked to elderberries for the answer.

Spratt looked to elderberries when she began to see products advertising their ability to relieve cold and flu symptoms along with strengthen the immune system. Unfortunately, she found the elderberry products to be too expensive for her and other parents in her neighborhood so she decided to create her own syrup and sell it. Her business pitch to a board of judges at the annual COD pitch contest won her $2,000 that she plans to put back into her business.

Sponsored by COD’s Innovation DuPage, E2 Emerging Entrepreneurs program and Entrepreneurship Club, the pitch contest occurred Nov. 14 as eight finalists were selected to showcase their business pitches. Business Professor and Entrepreneurship Club Adviser Peter James hosted the contest with hopes that the participants will get long-term benefits from the experience whether or not they’re pronounced the winner.

"It challenges participants to stretch themselves outside of their comfort zone and seize this moment in order to move one step closer to their dreams. This is the true definition of entrepreneurship,” James said.

Both COD students and students from area high schools were encouraged to participate in the event. Twenty-seven applicants applied for a finalist spot with only eight advancing to the final round.

Scholarship winners included third place winner, Jared Galler with a password locked safe that duals as a display case, second place winners Jonathan Arnold and Jack Young with Ground Coffee Compost Soil and first place winner Ashley Spratt with Elderberry Syrup.

Naperville North High School seniors, Arnold and Young, were inspired for their business when working together on a school project that prompted them to create a product to improve the community.

Their idea to use post-brewed coffee grounds mixed with compost to make an eco-friendly compost soil soon became a reality. The two found that coffee grounds are relatively rich in nitrogen that provides bacteria the energy needed to turn organic matter into compost. The two hope to further sales and sell their product at local farmers markets and hopefully someday see their product in ACE Hardware stores.

“We recently competed in another pitch contest last the spring and won $7,000 there; so now we have a lot to work with,” Arnold said. “Hopefully we can grow the business by finding larger areas to work and produce the compost.”

Third place winner Jared Galler pitched an idea and demonstrated his prototype of a password locked safe that duals as a display case for owners’ guns, money and other various valuables. He was awarded a $500 scholarship that he plans to use to patent his idea and build more safes the sell to customers in the future.

James along with the Entrepreneurship Club hope to continue the COD Pitch content tradition and make it an annual contest for aspiring entrepreneurs hoping to get the word out about their product.

THE IRONY OF REQUIRED VOLUNTEERING Reanna Comiso, Features Editor Volunteering has become the gold star to place on your resume and college applications. It shows you are a well-rounded, caring individual, sure to make you stick out to college admission counselors and job recruitment agents.

Now more than ever, volunteering is done less out of selflessness and more in hope of gaining a reward, such as getting admitted into your top college or landing your dream job. Has volunteering lost its meaning?

I do not spend enough time giv-

ing back to my community. I have the opportunity and privilege to give back to those in need. But like many other students my age, I grew up being required to volunteer. And, in a way, it left a bad impression of what volunteering means.

From working food drives to planting trees in my community, I have done my fair share of volunteering. Though, I cannot say it was out of my own free-will. I spent time volunteering because I had to. I grew up in a Catholic

household and spent my childhood years undergoing religious education. In order to “graduate” religious education, I had to make my confirmation. And in order to make my confirmation, I had to complete a mandatory 20 hours of community service.

I enjoyed my time volunteering, but I would be lying if I said it didn’t feel like a chore. Instead of doing it because I wanted to, I did it because I had to. If I didn’t, I would be punished and “exiled” from my community. I would be judged by my peers and teachers for not completing my volunteer hours. I had no choice.

Many students preparing to apply for colleges have plenty of volunteer hours under their belts, purposefully to make their college applications better, or because they were required to complete volunteer hours. For example, students

join service-based groups like the National Honor Society for application merit. One of the big requirements of being initiated into NHS is completing mandatory service hours.

Many students note that completing the mandatory volunteer hours was nothing more than a chore. Rather than being excited to give back to the community, it became something to dread.

“I was required to do volunteer hours for NHS, and I hated it,” said Ahnnabella Kolacki, a student at Valparaiso University, one of the local universities that prides itself on being a service-based school. “It definitely made volunteering feel like something I had to do rather than something I wanted to do.” continued on page 10

Alex Bacon, another local student from the University of Illinois, cites only completing service hours because it was a requirement for NHS. “It seems like the majority of people do it just for the hours, not for the act of helping,” said Bacon. “Usually I was just doing it for hours as well. So in a sense, I would [say] that it kind of defeats the purpose of service work.”

The modern college climate requires students to put their best foot forward and then some.

Instead of just putting in effort to get average-to-good grades, students feel they need to partake in various honor societies and extracurriculars to impress colleges. With some of the most competitive schools in the country residing in the Chicagoland area, like the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, students looking to get into the best of the best schools need to do more than ever before to increase their chances of admission. Upon getting into their school of choice, students often stop volunteering.

It is not until students get involved in a particular organization they enjoy that volunteering doesn’t end up feeling like a total burden. Initially, required volunteer hours give volunteering a bad rep. When students have access to causes they believe in, they are more likely to feel excited about the work they are doing.

Janine Bussler is a COD student who has a passion for giving back to children with cancer.

Love Your Melon is a company that produces hats and clothing and donates half of all proceeds to nonprofit partners to benefit children suffering from pediatric

cancer. Bussler is the captain of the COD Love Your Melon Crew, an organization that visits child oncology units, volunteering at Make-A-Wish events and takes part in other opportunities to help children with cancer.

“I got involved with Love Your Melon because at the age of 10 I was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease and chronic kidney disease, which meant I was going to need several kidney transplants over my life,” said Bussler. “I was exposed to all the hardships that a life-threatening illness has at a very young age, just like the kids that we do all our work for.”

Bussler found a group she believed in and turned it into a passion for service and helping children in need.

Kolacki also notes that attending a college that encourages volunteering rather than requiring it has helped her develop a passion for community service.

“My school encourages a lot of volunteering,” said Kolacki.

“We get two weeks off for spring break because they stress attending a service trip for the first week. I didn’t think I would ever volunteer this much.”

Despite poor experiences with required volunteering in the past, students have been able to move past the poor image of volunteering they once had to give it a new meaning. Volunteering at all is never a bad idea, even if required. But don’t let required volunteer hours hold you back from uncovering the gratification that comes with giving back.

GIVE BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON DONATE TO THE FUEL PANTRY With the holidays approaching faster than ever, it is easy to forget the true meaning of the holidays - the gift of giving. Giving back to the community does not have to be a chore. Instead, you can donate to the College of DuPage Fuel Pantry, the on-campus food pantry for all students, staff and faculty members on campus.

Research done by Phi Theta Kappa in 2015 showed 100 out of 750 COD students reported having access to one-to-two full meals a day or less. To combat food insecurity, PTK members decided an on-campus food pantry was a necessity and made it their annual campus-wide project in 2015. The Fuel Pantry opened on campus in 2016.

The Fuel Pantry currently serves 120 students, ensuring they have access to free and nutritious food items.

The pantry is available to all students, staff and faculty members who have a valid COD ID, which can be filled out for free in the Office of Student Life located in SSC 1217. Students and faculty can access the pantry almost every day classes are in session.

The Fuel Pantry is always looking for volunteers.

“Students and community members can get involved in the pantry by volunteering. They can email ptkfuelpantry@gmail.com to set up a training session,” said Rachel Matug, vice president of the Fuel Pantry.

For those unable to volunteer, the pantry is always accepting donations. Donations can be dropped off at Fuel Pantry in SRC 1000, next to the campus bookstore. They can also be brought to the Phi Theta Kappa office in SSC 2212 and the Office of Student Life.

Donations can include any non-perishable items, such as cereal bars, canned soups and vegetables, ramen noodles and spaghetti sauce. The pantry also accepts personal hygiene items, such as soap, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner.

Thanksgiving, as it is traditionally portrayed

DeAnte Washington, Guest Column Thanksgiving, or the celebration of inequality, is still currently a holiday set on the fourth Thursday of November each year. Like Columbus Day, or The Genocide of Indigenous People, Thanksgiving is also a controversial topic in our country. It doesn’t make it any better that there are so many stories on how it even became a holiday. The story that is relevant and told in schools is the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians made an agreement in Virginia and all sat down to eat turkey. The pilgrims didn’t even start Thanksgiving; they were just there.

Even worse, the first “Thanksgiving” originated in England, not Virginia. The website Congrega-

tion of Gods states,“The answer is a little complicated, but the bulk of it came from a pagan harvest celebration called Harvest Home, (also called harvest thanksgiving) which originated in England.”

The Pilgrims or Puritans were not the originators of the holiday. It was supposed to be a day of worship considered a “holy day,” but the leader of the Pilgrims rejected the idea and made it into a holiday.

What the teachers in our society left out was after the so-called alliance in 1621 between the two that started “Thanksgiving,” never was it mentioned how the Pilgrims gave the Wampanoags smallpox later that exact day. It is no surprise to anyone who studied U.S

So why would anyone think the Pilgrims wanted to make peace with the Wampanoags? After 16 years, the Pequot War took place and eliminated over 700 Native American men and women. Living in America, it’s not new for secrets to be kept from the citizens because it would be embarrassing to celebrate the Puritans (The majority) committing genocide on the Native Americans (Minorities).

It’s typical that history is a pickand-choose on what can be told in American society. Later in 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.

He made it important to make sure there was a focus on the Pilgrims and the Native Americans.

But Abe wasn’t always honest.

It was during that time when the Sioux tribe wanted to declare land that was rightfully theirs. Lincoln promised them the land but later decided to give them half of what they asked for.

Today in modern society, equality for Native Americans is close to none. Native Americans are still treated with inequality, being forced to celebrate a holiday that was not designed for them to enjoy when they have the background of being dehumanized from generations before them. America has done nothing but let them down continuously by taking their land, right to vote and making their culture extinct.

13 where it is acceptable to make disparaging remarks about others, hate will slither closer and closer to becoming a societal norm.

The negative and erroneous things said about various groups of people will become ingrained in millions of minds, playing on people’s fears and insecurities and feeding into preconceived notions.

It is impossible to live in a society and not be affected by its dominant ideals. Many people will internalize this negative rhetoric, and it will inevitably affect the way they treat others around them. And when hatred continues to go unchecked, our worst nightmares become our horrifying reality.

A recent article in the New York Times by Richard A. Friedman discussed the adverse effects a consistent stream of hate can have on the brain. Friedman cites a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the

Many argue against the condemnation of hate speech, positing that everyone should be allowed to say how they feel without censorship.

Even with the First Amendment right protecting freedom of speech in mind, the inherent dangers of propagating false negative ideas about a person or group of people cannot be ignored.

Whether or not hate speech is protected under the First Amendment is a hotly debated topic. Many scholars argue all hate speech is protected under the Constitution unless it is

speech that incites violence or results in harm to a person or groups of people.

With that being said, there’s no shortage of examples of the deadly consequences hate speech can inflict on a society. In the recent attack on a Pittsburgh synagogue where 11 people were killed, the gunman was motivated by an irrational fear and hatred of Jews, undoubtedly linked to the negative rhetoric against minorities in this country.

In the weeks leading up to the shooting, he posted a slew of anti-semitic remarks on social media.

He also claimed Jews were helping the migrant caravans heading towards the US-Mexico border, and he wanted all Jews to “die.”

Once an environment is created

United States of America (PNAS) that showed “threatening language can directly activate the amygdala [the area of the brain that processes threat].” He further explained hearing hateful language “...makes it hard for people to dial down their emotions and think before they act.”

It is also becoming exceedingly difficult to counter the negative and false narratives that continue to permeate our society. The media is constantly, and falsely, made out to be an unreliable news source by the country’s most powerful individuals, further allowing for the insidious denigration of millions of citizens.

We can’t afford to disregard the strong influence words can have over a population. Many prominent figures are aware of this, and manipulate words deliberately to encourage a divisive and contentious environment. We live in a society in which words have the ability to spur unthinkable actions. To deny this fact would mean being complicit in the endangerment of countless lives.

SPORTS Two undefeated units clashed on the court Nov. 15, but only one would leave that way. With the Morton Panthers on the prowl, College of DuPage’s Chaparrals were raring to run against the 4-0 Panthers invading their home court territory.

Even with Morton College presenting a team a division higher than the Chaps, they dauntlessly engaged them on the court to defend their own 3-0 record.

From the onset, the Panthers asserted their dominance, strutting out to an early 27-19 lead midway

through the second quarter and leaving the Chaps grasping for a recovery. But the Panthers would take no quarter. The Panthers looked to demoralize and shut out the Chaps as they powered through a 15-0 run to close out the game’s first half, trapping the Chaps into a 42-19 deficit.

The Chaps regrouped in the locker room. Back on the floor during the 3rd quarter, they forced the Panthers to battle to keep their lead. Gritty defensive play forced a number of jump balls, sloppy drives

15 and air balls from the Panthers. The frustration of the Panthers mounted and the Chaps turned that aggression against them as COD player No. 30, Erin Nelson, drew two charges in an effort to reverse the momentum of the game.

Despite the tenacious defensive effort and generating several scoring opportunities, the Chaps couldn’t click on the offensive end of the floor or convert on free throws at the line. They were unable to cut the lead below a 20-point deficit, leaving the score 35-57 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

With the Chap’s counterattack exhausted, the Panther’s seized their opportunity in the fourth and blew the game open. They found their rhythm again offensively, battering and capitalizing on the breathless Chaps to close out the game in a

commanding 43-86 victory.

Denise McCance, head coach for College of DuPage women's basketball team, commented on the teams struggled after the game’s conclusion, “We hustled and had stops, but we didn’t shoot well. Even our free throw percentage was pretty poor.

We had opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of. We got tired at the end, and we stopped contesting on fast breaks and at the three-point line,” McCance said. “We need execution and finishing. We had open looks; we just didn’t put it in. This is a good team. When you have an opportunity to take a shot you can’t miss it.”

College of DuPage Women’s Basketball Team’s next home match will be Nov. 29th against Waubonsee at 5 p.m.

This is such a classic ,but a handful of people may not be aware of the meaning behind the artist’s, Pat Monahan, words.

He wrote this song shortly after his mom passed away and explained in an interview, “It’s a story about my mother coming back after like swimming through the planets and finding her way through the universe, and coming back to tell me that heaven was overrated and to love this life, you know?” After listening to it with this in mind, I get the chills everytime.

On the outside, the song doesn’t sound too sad. In fact, it sounds pretty calm and relaxing at first. But on deeper examination, this song is about familial death, grief and overcoming the loss of a loved one, specifically the loss of an absent, addict mother. I don’t usually feel sad when I put this song on, but I usually end up feeling sad afterwards.

Sometimes putting yourself in a bad mood on purpose is justified for a really good piece of music.

It’s a heavy one; practically a suicide note in the form of a song. It reflects back on memories with a bittersweet nostalgia, building to a climactic hopeful outlook to the world. Adam’s Song is one of those songs you grow up with, just a lingering piece of your childhood, never knowing the meaning until you’re older. I heard it 14 years later, and it crushed me like a pile of bricks. I have a deep connection with this song because it was a beacon of hope in my darkest time. Today, when I’m feeling down, I embrace the sadness, knowing this song will bring me back up. Though it may be the heaviest song to me, it’s also the most uplifting.

Dance with the Devil by Felipe Andres Coronel, better known as Immortal Technique, tells the story about a young boy who grew up in an unsafe neighborhood with the desire to join a gang. As an initiation, the gang he joined forces him to attack and rape a woman. He commits the crime, and once he looks the woman in her face, he realizes it was his mother the whole time, and he commits suicide. It’s not until the end of the song that we learn that Immortal Technique was also a member of the gang. Dance with the Devil is both a terribly sad song and a piece of art as the artist tells his story solely through his rhythm and lyrics.

Whether or not you’re a fan of R&B music, Immortal Technique’s lyrics can be both impactful and eye opening to anyone who loves a story.
