The first candidate to make his pitch to become the College of DuPage’s new president featured a pledge to support at least one initiative that would ease fears many students have about going into debt to get an education.

Johnny Moore, the current president at Pierpont Community and Technical College in W.V., spoke to community members at the open forum hosted by the COD Board of Trustees Monday. The presidential candidate shared his experiences as an educator and leader in the academic world and where he started.

Moore, who is vocal about free community college tuition, has 29 years of experiences in different aspects of higher education institutions, with 27 years at comprehensive two-year colleges. Moore, a first generation college graduate, has a Ph.D. in mathematics and has served in various roles in four differ-

ent states.

In terms of the COD policy of dropping students for nonpayment for courses, Moore believes the best approach is free community college tuition.

“Fight like hell at the state legislature and get a free community college bill passed so you don’t have to [worry about it.],” Moore said.

Moore’s achievements in the academic world had very different beginnings.

“I only thought about going to college as an opportunity for me to continue playing the sport I love basketball. My goal was to play in the NBA. And I know some of you are looking at me and saying, ‘Dr. Moore, you’re barely 5’10”!’ Well, it was my belief that I would grow another 6 or 7 inches like another former Arkansas young fellow, who you all love here on the Chicago Bulls, Scottie Pippen.”

Moore graduated from Philander Smith College in 1989 with a degree in mathematics.

Moore’s view on student success is individualized, with an emphasis on there being more than one right way to do things. He has 13 years of experience as the vice president of student services at other institutions.

“One of the things I’m going to say is this: there is no one-way model for student success,” Moore said.

“We have 20 million students nationally in American colleges, and our students are coming to us more diverse than ever before in terms of age, ethnicity, race, family background. They come to us with their expectations as to what they think they can get out of college. And so part of our role is to . . . get around multiple pathways to help students to be successful.”

Moore believes building strong

trusting teams in the senior and middle leadership levels has a key factor: communication and the drive and preparation for success.

“Part of my leadership style is about teams. I saw people doing outstanding things individually. You have pockets of people doing outstanding things all across the campus, but there was no unifying vision to connect all these parts. The very first talk I had with my staff I used a quote by one of my favorite basketball coaches, Bobby Knight.

He said, ‘The will to win, everybody has.’ Everybody has the will to win. He said, ‘The key is the will to prepare to win.’ Sso the theme for the year in 2016 was ‘Preparing to Win.’ Every single talk I had with my faculty, staff, people in the hallway was [sports related.] Getting them into that mode of preparing to win. Anybody can win games.

Great teams win championships.”

College of DuPage announced Dilyss Gallyot and Benjamin Wahlund to be COD’s college wide outstanding faculty recipients of 2018-2019. Gallyot and Wahlund were nominated by students who appreciate their dedication and enthusiasm.

Gallyot has been a full-time professor at COD since 2004. During her time at COD, she’s helped in the redesigning of the nursing program, developed clinical exams for eight nursing classes and helped create effective studying strategies for students taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). As a way to promote transparency, Gallyot begins class by asking students what they need for success each day.

“They’ll give me responses like let us know when tests are, or stay organized, communicate…I let them know that they’re in charge,” Gallyot said.

Gallyot believes the most import-

ant quality every teacher must have is an enthusiasm for their subject.

She also advocates for class discussion and engagement rather than note taking.

“When you start teaching, you don’t know how to do a lot of things.

You think that teaching is just discussing things and relying information, but it’s not,” Gallyot said. “I still post Powerpoint to Blackboard, but during my class we use a Socratic method. I write case studies on the board for students to work together to solve. If they’re struggling in my class, and I see that, they’ll get an individual email from me asking if there’s anything I can do to help.”

Finding positive connections with students in and out of the classroom is a skill both Gallyot and Wahlund have. Gallyot has found small gestures like remembering students’ names and asking questions dramatically improves her students’ engagement in class.

“I tell my students that it’s OK

if they’re wrong or right. I care about them, and I try to let them know that I care about them. I tell them, ‘I’m not your friend, however I will be your greatest cheerleader and I’m here to help you succeed,’” Gallyot said.

When she began teaching, Gallyot found it difficult to relay information to students because they’ve all had different experiences. Once returning to business school however, she found herself in a similar position to her students, which helped Gallyot understand them better.

“I came [to COD] with 16 years of nursing experience. I had an education and my masters degree. So I’ve synthesized a lot of information, but I have students in front of me who haven’t had those same experiences yet. I had to learn how to deconstruct things, which is a hard lesson for teachers,” Gallyot said.

Wahlund is a grammy-nominated, award-winning musician and composer. He’s the director of per-

cussion at COD and a full-time percussion instructor at Northern Illinois University. Wahlund works as the percussion ensemble director for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and directs nationwide camps and workshops. When creating lessons and performances, Wahlund takes into consideration all of his students, remembering everyone has different experiences.

A student wrote in Wahlund’s nomination, “He works with his students and teaches in a manner that makes the students themselves want to raise their own standards.”

Although COD only recognizes two educators as winners of the Overall Outstanding Fulland Part-Time Faculty Member awards, numerous other educators are recognized annually for their hard work. COD also honors outstanding advisers and faculty members who make a difference in the community.

VETERANS ROCKIES ENCOUNTER For COD students who are military veterans

Orientation: Wednesday, June 19, 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Final class: Sunday, July 28, 5 to 7:30 p.m.

This adventure-based course offers a full $960 scholarship for a backpacking trek in the Colorado Rockies for students who are military veterans. It meets the Contemporary Life Skills requirement or speech requirement for AAS degrees. Selected vets explore leadership, teamwork, roles, conflict management, ecological awareness and personal development in the Colorado wilderness as they reconnect and apply skills learned in the military to civilian life.

SCHOLARSHIP: The scholarship includes air/ground transportation, most meals, lodging, backpacking and camping equipment, rafting and wilderness permits. Tuition is extra. Preference given to those currently serving or separated from uniform services within the last 10 years.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR COD’S 5K RACE Karla Villegas Pineda, News Correspondent villegaspinedak@dupage.edu As the school year draws to a close, promotion for COD’s Food Truck Rally and Sunset 5K is just beginning. The race, which is scheduled for October 5, has opened an early bird promotion for participants of the 5K— the registration fees are only $15 for the first 500 community members.

Current students of COD can register to participate for only $10.

The 5K also offers reduced prices for alumni, staff and faculty. Community members, staff and students who wish to attend the event without participating in the race are able to join the fun for free.

The event will feature more than 15 food trucks, stage entertainment and gift card prizes for top runners

of each category.

“Quote how long COD has been putting on the 5k” said Race Co-Director Ami Chambers.

Next week, on Tuesday May 14, get a sneak peek of the Food Truck Rally from 11:30 to 1pm at the north entrance (by the PACE bus stop) of the Student Resource center with pop-up appearances by “Toasty Cheese” and “Cupcakes for Courage.” Consider this a pickme-up during the stress that is final exams week.

HIP HOP SUMMIT GRAFFITI WORKSHOP Alison Pfaff, Features Editor pfaffa72@dupage.edu

From tagging alleys in Chicago, to teaching COD students graffiti-style letters, artist “Ogel”, has been drawing graffiti since the 80’s.

“I started out as a “garbage” graffiti writer in 1989, tagging on park benches and in alleys [and] garbage cans. [I] transitioned through the 90’s into being a pretty prolific “bomber” or vandal at the time, primarily CTA property and then slowly became better and better at what I did, learning from my peers and my mentors, and I just painted on everything,” Ogel said.

On May 1, students had the opportunity to show their artistic talent at a Graffiti Art Workshop as part of the inaugural COD Hip Hop Summit. The event was hosted by the Center for Diversity and inclusion, as well as Counseling and Advising Services. Students were able to choose three colors of markers, as well as a canvas to learn basic bubble letters in a graffiti style. Ogel believes this event, as well as the Hip Hop Summit in general, is a great opportunity to promote diversity and inclusion.

“One of the initiatives for this entire program was diversity and inclusion, being a part of the Hip Hop summit,” he said. “If you look at the group of participants here, you pretty much have the largest spectrum of cultures, religion, race, ethnicity, in this one room of probably about 50 participants.

Probably from all different backgrounds, probably from all parts of the city and suburbs, with the love or appreciation for certain parts of the culture, which, to me, is the most important part about it. “[Graffiti is] art, and it’s freedom. It’s expression, and, like I said throughout the course of the summit, it’s therapy.”

FEELING NUMB TO THE NEWS? OVERCOMING DESENSITIZATION IN THE MEDIA Joey Weslo, Assignment Reporter wesloj@dupage.edu One hundred souls returned to their flesh; one hundred hearts filled again with their blood. Dismembered limbs sewn back in place, the bomb scenes erased of their mutilated corpses. Under a cloud of confusion, shattered lives once again made whole.

Yet, when the reported death toll in Sri Lanka’s recent terrorist bombings was revised down 100, to “about 253,” no joy or compassion filled my heart for the 100 lives not taken from us.

The disparity between 353 and 253 cannot be emotionally registered. Numbers do not have lives or loved ones who will forever carry the pain. When structured as attention-getting, “BREAKING NEWS” headlines, saturated numbers strip the humanity from the victims.

The constant barrage of impersonalized fatality numbers in the media has desensitized viewers

from proper anguish and empathy.

In the digitally-linked world and the 24-hour news cycle, instantaneous tragedy has turned into a perpetual, emotionless drone.

In the wake of World Press Freedom Day (May 3), we contemplate how does the reporter combat the audience’s dissociation from the true horrors of the story? How can media violence be viewed without causing a societal desensitization?

and clichéd visuals propagating our senses. Tragedies compete for our short-lived sympathy and attention span, soon to be replaced by the next daily shot of self-gratuitous, ego-driven outpourings of grief.

Our attention is triggered by fears of attacks against ourselves.

If we can relate to the victims, our sympathy is activated. Our cultural similarities caused an outpouring of grief for the 137 lives lost in the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks.

However, the cultural dissonance between America and Lebanon saw the same month’s Beirut bombings with 89 fatalities largely unreported. If we cannot empathize and put ourselves in the victims’ shoes, we fail to grieve.

ceive the attack. Americans view the Middle East as plagued with chronic violence, so the attacks barely register on our radar. We hardly hesitate our scroll through the daily news. The fact that the event happened is more important than the human value of the tragedy.

From mass shootings, to natural disasters and terrorist attacks, the pattern for reporting has become monotonous. All calls for societal change are like drops in an ocean.

The mantra went from, “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore,” to “I’m mad as hell,” to “OK, it happened. Now, what’s next?”

Of the more than 3,770 migrants who drowned in 2015 trying to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean, it took the photo of one drowned 3-year-old Syrian boy to capture people’s attention.

Alan (Aylan) Kurdi, face down in the sand, resonated on a more visceral and familial level. It was impossible not to see your own child in his lifeless figure. This bond breaks through all disparities in culture, race, class and religion.

If the assumed role of reporting is more than merely informative, how do we decide who makes a worthy victim? How do we localize and relate tragedies without trivializing them?

Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the New York Times published 2,500 personalized obituaries of those killed. The intimate details humanized the tragedy, showing even though we are geographically apart, those killed are just like my family and friends.

The numbers ceased to be numbers because they became people.

Similar efforts were made by the Associated Press in memorializing the 49 people lost in the 2016 Or-

lando nightclub shooting.

More attention was given to fiveyear old Crystal Lake, Ill. boy, AJ Freund, whom police believe was murdered by his parents, than all 253 victims in Sri Lanka. A face and a detailed story prove heartbreaking for the viewer. Social proximity and relatability triggers sympathy. As the media-world knows, sympathy triggers fear.

Fear equals ratings.

A 1984 study by psychologist Daniel Linz found when frequently exposed to material showing sexual violence, men (as compared to a non-exposure group) were less sympathetic to victims of real life sexual violence.

It is the duty of the reporter to put a face and life-story behind every numerical figure. Find what makes the person universal and relatable; find where the common-humanity exists.

A 1986 George Washington University study researching media coverage of 35 recent natural disasters showed the severity and number of deaths did not correlate to given airtime. A Guatemalan earthquake with four times the deaths as an Italian earthquake was given one-third the airtime. Our limited attention spans will only be granted to culturally relevant tragedies we can see ourselves in.

If tragedies carry cultural significance, like the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shooting (resulting in 28 deaths), which spotlighted the role of guns and mental health in America, the coverage is a ratings bonanza.

Attention-grabbing headlines have become more valued than stories that may be more newsworthy. While ignoring systemic issues that often lead to mass shootings, terrorist attacks or social service deficiencies during natural disasters, viewers find themselves inundated with dehumanized figures and garish graphics.

When the news couples the barrage of grisly and violent images with frequent events featuring significantly high death tolls, the psychological phenomenon called the “collapse of compassion” can overtake the viewer.

The phenomenon states sympathy will diminish as death tolls rise, and more empathy can be derived for the suffering of an individual than for groups of people. This coping mechanism helps us temper our emotional responses to situations that are incomprehensibly tragic and overwhelming. The collapse of compassion prevents us from personifying cold, reported numbers. We become dissociated from the reality of tragic events.

If the collapse of compassion is consistently required to deal with never-ending tragic events, the further state of “compassion fatigue” can set in. This represents the gradual and consistent lessening of compassion and empathy due to an over-stimulated response system from constant trauma, disasters and violence.

By perpetuating decontextualized headlines and over-saturat-

ing media markets with stories of non-personified tragedy and anguish, compassion fatigue further trivializes flesh and blood into irrelevant numbers.

It is the duty of the reporter to put a face and life-story behind every numerical figure. Find what makes the person universal and relatable; find where the common-humanity exists.

The celebrated tenets of World Press Freedom Day remind us of the inherent purpose of reporting.

The purpose is not to get bogged down by the monotony of repetitious stories, but to rise above the emotionless-drone and make people feel something. Raw emotion inspires change.

We see it in the Mexican journalists, such as the murdered Telesforo Santiago Enriquez, risking their lives documenting cartel-led corruption in an effort to bring greater security to local villagers.

We see it Reuters reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who are imprisoned in Myanmar for trying to step the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslims by capturing the murder of 10 individuals by the military.

Sri Lanka’s health services attributed the death toll’s 100-person over-calculation to the difficulty of gathering a precise figure because of the immensity of severed and dismembered body parts.

As we translate the horrors into tangible reporting, we cannot disservice the victims by trivializing their tragedies.

In the sea of inhumanity, we cannot subvert our compassion and forsake the essence of what makes us collectively human.

NEWS OPINION ‘PATHWAYS’ COULD LEAD STUDENTS DOWN THE PATH TO A NARROW EDUCATION

At the beginning of my time at College of DuPage, I was certain I wanted to major in journalism.

Like many COD students, I visited the Counseling, Advising and Transfer Services office and was advised to complete my general education requirements, which mostly included 1000-level courses.

It wasn’t until I decided on my own to take a 2000-level sociology course that realized I wanted to major in the subject instead. It’s a course I would have never taken had I been put on a Journalism “pathway.”

The Guided Pathways model will put students on a track to take specific courses in accordance with their major. COD’s website states the Guided Pathways model will help students to “clarify their goals, choose and enter pathways that will achieve those goals, stay on those pathways, and master knowledge and skills that will enable them to advance in the labor

market and successfully pursue further education.”

Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs Lisa Stock states the Guided Pathways model, which was founded by the American Association of Community Colleges, is “in response to a national drive to get more people with credentials,” as well as to “combat the students that go to school, take a couple of years and never end up with anything in the end.”

Having clear goals while attending college is important to success.

But only being able to take courses in the subject area one is majoring in will inhibit the college learning experience and prevent students from gaining a comprehensive education.

With the guided pathways model, someone majoring in chemistry would almost certainly never be exposed to 2000-level courses in the liberal arts or humanities.

This would rob them of the opportunity to learn about the fas-

cinating and thought-provoking topics dealt with in these courses. They would never be able to broaden their knowledge beyond chemistry and closely related subjects.

Professor of Philosophy Kent Richter believes a college education should be more than just the means to obtaining a job.

“There are some of us that have sort of a larger philosophical concern that we are playing a game that’s more narrowly focusing education on career training, and there are some of us that think that education is much bigger than that,” Richter said. “It’s about knowing culture. It’s about appreciating arts, and how do you fit that into a pathway?”

The Guided Pathways model could also inadvertently lead to the elimination of many upper level liberal arts and humanities courses at COD. Counselors would only recommend a 2000-level philosophy course to

someone majoring in the subject or a similar discipline. This could result in lower levels of enrollment for these kinds of courses and their eventual removal, which could prove detrimental to students’ overall success once they transfer to four-year institutions.

“If we hope the student will transfer as a junior, then we can’t hand somebody just a bunch of 1000-level courses.” Richter states. “Surely we have to be thinking of developing high-level skills and making sure some of those [liberal arts and humanities] courses survive and that advisors know they’re there and can recommend them.”

Stock states the guided pathway model rightly emphasizes the general education component of attaining a college degree. She believes pathways would not have any negative effect on liberal arts and humanities courses at COD continued on page 14

and that it might even “enhance” those subjects.

Associate Professor and Reference Librarian Jason Ertz also believes guided pathways may encourage more students to major in liberal arts and humanities disciplines. Ertz, who is a member of COD’s Pathways Steering Committee and Pathways Executive Counsel, said the college is making a “concerted effort” to ensure liberal arts and humanities courses are still prioritized. “We want to make a lot of history, sociology, philosophy, English, lan-

guages, these kinds of degrees, these programs, we’re trying to build transfer programs even in those fields.”

While Ertz also believes it is important for COD students to receive a well-rounded education, it is difficult to see how the Guided Pathways model would allow for

Every college student should have the chance to explore those disciplines regardless of their major. How will students truly know what they want to focus their stud-

ies on if they are never allowed to immerse themselves in the wide array of subject areas available to them?

The critical thinking and analytical skills to be gained from liberal arts and humanities courses are useful in any career. These assets are also something employers are increasingly demanding all college graduates possess. It wouldn’t just be a shame if an engineering student at COD never has a chance to experience the thrill of discovering concepts like Du Bois’ “Veil” or Descartes’ “Cogito.” It would also be a disservice.

How will students truly know what they want to focus their studies on if they are never allowed to immerse themselves in the wide array of subject areas available to them?

Those are all assumptions students have in their minds when it comes to interacting in a college classroom. College of DuPage is a place where students sit in their classes, complete their assignments, and head out to their next class or back to their daily routine without saying a word to their colleagues. On the other hand, a small-scale of COD students think of their education in a different perspective. Walking through the hallways or just sitting in class, anybody is able to recognize those students. It is clear to spot the ones that are not hesitant to create social interactions for numerous of reasons. COD students should meet colleagues in the classroom atmosphere because it develops communication skills, potential in career and networking possibilities and forms

new friendships.

To introduce, admitting to yourself that getting anxious when having to communicate with professors or colleagues can hold a burden on you. The anxiety of communications should not push away COD students to acquire a skill that is needed in the future.

Differently, the students at College of DuPage should conquer these obstacles’ and take the opportunity to practice the skill that is most needed to progress in the world.

Breaking through the first step of introducing yourself to a student that is sitting right besides, is a step closer to becoming more confident and eliminating the anxiety.

Adding on, College of DuPage accommodates numerous courses to engage students with networking that has possibilities of benefitting a students future career. It is as easy as a click or phone call away to put a COD student ahead

of their skills to communicate. As the anxiety slowly starts to fade away, any student can find their way to talk about future career development with their colleagues.

The courses provided help COD students step out of their comfort zone and be able to achieve networking skills that will guarantee to be beneficial.

Moreover, as introduced in the beginning, many can see that COD students come in and out of the campus without saying a word, since they have their technological devices to communicate with their real friends outside College of DuPage. Consider developing communication skills as well as networking, will result in expanding your social support group into long time friendships. College of DuPage is a place for students to excel in their future goals and create relationships beyond the borders of the campus.

To wrap up, it is clear for COD students to recognize the social gap on campus. Students meeting others around the campus leads to communication skills, the potential in career and networking possibilities, and forming friendships. College of DuPage strives for their students to accomplish one goal which is success. On the other hand, COD students complain about wasting their time to socialize with colleagues, but it is only a step away to visit the COD campus central located on the first floor to find more information. They will tell COD students about the excellent courses provided for students to practice their communication skills that is needed in the world. Students should take opportunity to fight through their comfort zone and break the silence in order for them to be successful in the future.

SAVING BLACK LIVES DeAnte Washington, Staff Writer washingtond1614@dupage.edu Some of y’all about to be real mad at me, but it must be said. We’re not new to police brutality. We can add to the list of problems that black people deal with in America today.

White people will never understand the battle black people have with their safety even when dealing with law enforcement.

For white people, it has always been taught to put their trust into the policemen, but for us, it’s about making sure we don’t get shot every time a cop pulls us over. No one but black people will truly understand the emotional and psychological aspect of being pulled over or stopped by a police officer. As we are still fighting for justice every day for our future children, there are black advocates doing everything in their power to help this problem.

I read an article on, The Root written by Jay Connor on a new way to make black people feel safer in situations like this. In 2016, Philando Castile was shot dead during a traffic stop, he was pulled over by Minnesota officer, Jeronimo Yanez. Castile stated he had a license to carry a firearm but then reached to get his ID and wallet. Yanez saw him reaching and assumed he was reaching for the firearm. He then repeatedly told Castile to stop reaching and shot Castile seven times. Castile died. Yanez was charged with manslaughter but acquitted.

If the officer had known and was sure of what Castile was reaching for instead of assuming it was a firearm, Castile would be alive today.

Jackie Carter has come up with a device she hopes will help battle

police brutality. She has created a pouch for black people to put in their car. It is used to notify police officers that a person in the car is not reaching for anything except the following listed on the pouch.

On the pouch it states “Not Reaching, Officer I’m NOT Reaching,” and has a bulleted list of “Driver’s License, Insurance card, Registration.”

As a black community, we have come to the conclusion that some policemen who we have trusted to protect us, don’t protect us but abuse that power. The saying goes, it’s truly impossible to be black and comfortable in this country, but as small as the pouch may be -it’s a start.

I believe this will open the eyes of people who don’t understand how

serious this issue is. A pouch may not have an effect or determine if a cop will let a innocent black male or female live to see another day. The purpose of it is to let the police officer know there is no reason to assume they are reaching for a weapon or anything else while in the car.

As a black man, it infuriates me how we have to go through desperate measures in order for a family to not get a call at night that their child has been killed. We’re tired of hearing that there is another Trayvon, Philando, Michael and Laquan in this world who didn’t get the justice they deserve. I believe the fight with law enforcement will only be fixed if there is an understanding that black people are human, our voices demand to be heard, and our fight will never be over.

CHAPARRAL OLYMPICS CANCELLED Vijay Kavuri, Sports Editor kavuri@dupage.edu

The Chaparral Olympics were cancelled after power was shutdown to replace a power transformer at the Physical Education Center. Matt Cousins, Manager of the Chap Fitness Center, stated that emails were sent out to the college community on Friday, May 3.

The event could not be rescheduled as College of DuPage is nearing the end of the semester. Word of this cancellation was not sent to the official Courier Newspaper email addresses, nor was word sent to any student email addresses. Cousins apologized that students didn’t receive word about the planned closure.

After polling over 40 COD students to find if any had recieved the email about the closure, which Cousins claimed he sent to the COD community, all answered that they had not.

Student Will Auolio was going to attend the Chap Olympics event, but found out it was not taking place when he turned up and found the gym was closed.

Intramurals will begin again during the fall semester.

THE NEW S-CURVE SUSTAINABILITY IN FASHION

T

he Devil Wears Prada is an admittedly overdramatized take on the fashion industry.

The audience is treated to countless references to top designer labels and an inside look at dimly lit, invite-only parties, portraying the fashion world as mostly gloss, glamour and free designer makeovers. The film follows Andy (Anne Hathaway), a recent college grad and aspiring journalist who takes a position as personal assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the infamously brutal editor of Runway Magazine, the film’s version of Vogue.

Satirical as this version of the fashion world may be, we learn something important about the in-

dustry from one monologue in particular. When Andy naively refers to a collection of designer clothes as “stuff,” inferring high fashion is unrelated to her life, Miranda cooly, mercilessly informs her that even the ugly “lumpy blue sweater” Andy chose to wear represents millions of dollars, countless jobs and important decisions made by top designers that eventually trickled down to her decision of what to wear.

Through this exchange, Andy and the audience learn no one is isolated from the fashion industry.

Even if we aren’t all designers or fashion enthusiasts, we all play a part in how clothes are produced and purchased based on what

we choose to wear (or not wear).

There is a constant give-and-take between how the fashion market produces and how the fashion consumer buys.

Which brings us to the latest buzz word in the fashion industry: sustainability. What is becoming just as important as quality or design is how clothes are produced and purchased. On both ends of the sustainability movement, individual consumers and large organizations like Global Labor Justice, Greenpeace Detox Catwalk and Green America are calling on designers and fast-fashion companies like H&M, Forever21, Gap and Zara to take greater responsibility for their environmental impact

and treatment of their employees.

And for good reason. The fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution and has a history of exploiting labor. According to the World Resources Institute, in 2015 polyester production of textiles released 706 billion kg (1.5 trillion pounds) of greenhouse gases in 2015 -- the equivalent of 185 coal-fired power plants’ annual emissions. In most of the countries where garments are produced, toxic wastewaters from factories run directly into rivers. plier factories are too often underpaid: a 2011 study conducted by War on Want revealed a garment factory helper’s wage started at just £25 (around $28) a month – far below living wage. Female workers are usually under management of mostly-male superiors, leading to a hierarchical structure that makes it difficult for female workers to voice complaints or report abuse.

Eva Stevens, coordinator of Fashion Studies at COD, is a former designer with a range of experience in the fashion industry. Stevens said she’s seen major changes in the fashion industry.

“I designed sweaters,” Stevens said when asked if she had any memories of what the first fast-fashion brand looked like. “It took so much work and was expensive to add decoration and embroidery to sweaters. Then trade regulations changed, and everything was decorated. Walmart suddenly had sweaters with embroidery and fringes. Everything was decorated because trade was cheap.”

In the 1980s and 90’s, trade deals changed and globalization radicalized the paradigm of the fashion industry. When the U.S. loosened trade regulations, the clothing market was suddenly saturated with clothes from all over the world.

Open trade meant China could sell the same clothes made here — and with more variation — for less money. Buyers responded. Which

brings us to the fast-fashion model that dominates retail today.

“The good thing about fast fashion is it’s brought sustainability issues to the forefront,” Stevens said.

“But fast fashion is the problem.

When our trade deals loosened up, people thought, ‘Well, that’s great, why not have clothes from all over the world sold here? It saves people money and helps other countries if they sell here.’”

But negative effects of fast fashion reach further than we realize.

Boyce Avenue is a band that usually focuses on doing cover songs, with a few of their own original works, and when they decided to make a cover of Demons by Imagine Dragons I was not disappointed. They turn Demons into an acoustic cover which really works with the flow of the song, creating something soothing to listen to.

Featured in this cover is Jennel Garcia, and her beautiful voice really brings something new into the song that it missed before.

Composer John Wasson’s rendition of one of my most loved jazz songs has got to be my favourite. This version of legendary jazz musician Duke Ellington’s classic, which was featured in the electrifying finale of the critically acclaimed 2014 film ‘Whiplash,’ gives an energetic flare to the original that I very much enjoy listening to.

Percussion is also heavily featured throughout, and the dramatic jazz ending which closes the piece and follows a lengthy drum solo makes the 9:15 run time of the song extremely pleasurable.

It took me way too long to realize that this song is not the original.

“Walls”, released in 1996, was written by Tom Petty and performed

by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The lyrics are phenomenal, never failing to give me the chills. The track finds the Lumineers transforming Petty’s upbeat rocker into simple folk. With the help of an acoustic guitar, tambourine and accordian, the Lumineers executed this cover.

Can’t Help Falling In Love Ingrid Michaelson

I was stunned when I discovered that the UB40 version of this song, which I grew up listening to, was not the original. Considering my Nana’s love for Elvis, I would have thought that I would have heard the original before. However, my favorite cover of this song has to be Ingrid’s version. I sang this song at my brother’s wedding, and almost made it through the whole song without crying. I tried to emulate Ingrid’s tone and style, but I acknowledge that I never could match her near-perfect rendition.
