Ken Trzaska has had many accomplishments in his career in academics, and some of those tie back to his own days at College of DuPage. While he is currently the president of Seward County Community College, he was an adjunct faculty member at COD from 1994-2004. Trzaska worked in the writing center and taught English literature and composition.

“I feel there is a tremendous level of opportunity here at College of DuPage,” Trzaska said. “Being in the Writing Center on Saturday mornings, helping assess papers, ultimately direct students in where we felt the best for them would be moving forward. [Also] teaching English at Addison, Westmont and here on campus on Saturday mornings, it means a tremendous amount to me to, maybe, possibly be able to bring this full circle back here.”

Trzaska has a large emphasis on teamwork and standing out from the crowd in terms of leadership.

“Let’s not think outside the box because everyone else is doing it. Let’s eliminate. Let’s think if we want to be the COD that follows, or the one that leads. I’m all about the team, and it would be crazy if a leader wasn’t about the team, but I’m unique in how I bring that together. It is a tireless effort, as many of you saw today that’s everyday, whether it’s 7 a.m. or 7 p.m. this is what you get. This is the energy you get, the philosophy you get, and the vision that you get,” Trzaska said.

When asked about students being dropped for nonpayment, Trzaska expressed an emphasis on helping students to find a pathway to success.

“Certainly there’s a level of accountability, but you also have to understand this: If we all kind of step back from ourselves for a second and ask what vulnerabilities do we face

in our lives, what vulnerabilities are we willing to admit that we’ve faced and think about our student. It’s hard to think about our student because every single one of our students is unique, is different. A backpack on their back that invisible that’s full of all kinds of stuff that they’re trying to figure out,” Trzaska said. “So absolutely in the flexibility in the accessibility model, helping those students find a pathway to success is our responsibility. It’s got to be in your heart as a leader to make that happen. So absolutely, I would do everything in my power to help that student, and I empower my team, every single one of you, to do whatever you feel we can do to help that student. ” Trzaska said he took a similar approach to teaching his own students. “I used to tell my students when I taught, ‘listen, if we were all to leave and head to Los Angeles, Calif., some of you would fly. Some of you would drive.

Some of you hitch hike. Some of you would walk. Some of you may take the really long route, but at the end of the day, you’re all going to get to Los Angeles, Calif., or wherever you’re going.’ So there’s no particular pathway that works best for one. It’s a matter of how we facilitate that as leaders and as mentors and as citizens of our community to help every single student, no matter what their unique circumstances are, get to that goal. Period.”

Interim COD President Brian Caputo also re-entered his name to be considered for the full-time role of president. Caputo, through a college spokeswoman, announced he was dropping out of consideration last week. He offered no explanation. On Tuesday, a statement by college officials said Caputo resubmitted his name for consideration after being asked to do so by the college’s board of trustees. Caputo will participate in a public forum at 5 p.m., Thursday, in the SSC atrium.

THE TRAUMA THAT PERSISTS

HOW COUNSELING HELPS THE SURVIVORS COPE Joey Weslo, Assignment Reporter wesloj@dupage.edu Sacrificing their lives to save others, two students caught in the most recent school shootings are being hailed as “heroes.” for embodying the courage that their political representatives lack.

Kendrick Castillo, 18, died lost his life while blocking the gunmaen with three other students during the shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado, resulting in eight other students wounded.

Castillo loved engineering and was soon to graduate high school.

Riley Howell, 21, an R.O.T.C. cadet, diedlost his life tackling the gunmen during the shooting at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, resulting in one other stu-

dent killed and four more wounded.

Howell was a soccer goalie when in high school.

As College of DuPage mental health counselor Dennis Emano , a mental health counselor at the College of DuPage knows, unless properly treated, the trauma experienced by students, friends and family can have lingering and debilitating psychological effects. Emano, also a licensed psychologist, stresseds, students who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression must find the courage to seek help.

“We are professionals and know how to cope with problems arising from experiencing a traumatic

event,” said Emano. “It is wonderful, and often crucial to have a social support system of family or friends, but they are not trained in directly helping people effectively cope.”

Since the 1999 Columbine High School shooting (killing 15 people), CBS News has reported an estimated 228,000 American students have experienced gun-related violence at their school. CNN has documented 35 school shootings in this school year alone.

The National Center for PTSD estimates one-third of people who experience a traumatic event will develop acute stress disorder, with symptoms lasting about a month after the trauma. Twenty-eight

percent of people will develop the more long-term post-traumatic stress disorder.

Symptoms beleaguering the person include excessive and often debilitating anxiety, disturbed sleep patterns, vivid flashbacks, and a disassociation from the emotional and physical realities of everyday life.

The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence reports 40 percent of children who experience gun violence show symptoms of PTSD. The nonprofit encourages lawmakers to ensure minors are denied access to firearms, especially minors who pose a threat to themselves or others.

Emano believes if these symptoms linger, the person must be willing to openly address and combat the problems they are dealing with.

Nobody should feel guilty or weaker than others for having to seek help.

Everyone copes and heals from trauma and tragedy differently.

“The biggest psychological problem people face after traumatic events is anxiety,” said Emano. “This includes avoidance of situations and social settings. Many things in the environment can trigger intense flashbacks of the trauma, leading to a sudden panic attack. Due to the fear of incessant panic attacks, they learn to avoid certain situations to protect themselves. However, avoiding social situations is not a healthy solution for the anxieties in anyone’s life. As counselors, we encourage the person to incrementally expose themselves to the situation that may cause stress. Slowly, this will help diminish the anxiety effectively.”

suffer from lingering symptoms have been made all the more real by the recent suicides of two survivors of the Parkland shooting and a father whose daughter was killedlost in Sandy Hook.

Sydney Aiello, 19, a student at Florida Atlantic University, ended her life after a struggle with what her mother called survivor’s guilt, resulting from the shooting at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School (killing 17 people). Aiello’s close friend, Meadow Pollack, was among those who perished in the carnage.

Another survivor of the attack, Calvin Desir, 16, killed himself within days of Aiello.

When an individual struggles to accept that control over external events is out of their hands, they

manifest a false -sense of control by blaming themselves. The person constantly asks, ‘What could I have done to change the circumstances?’

‘What did I fail to do when the situation arrived?’

In comparing themselves to the victims, people can internalize the frustrations into self-depreciating thoughts and anger against their self. They often ask, ‘Did I really deserve to live, while better people than me died?’

Emano said people fear if they lack control, there’s nothing preventing the trauma from reoccurring. He said the most popular evidence-based counseling technique to address this problem is cognitive behavioral therapy. The therapy includes changing the way you think about things to alter the way you feel and respond to certain situa-

tions.

“People experience grief in many different ways, often through guilt or anger” said Emano. “We help progress through stages of grief and work towards acceptance that the event happened, and you can’t do anything to change that. Using this approach, we look realistically at what your actions were during the event. We look at the limitations you were under during the event. By challenging these false assumptions, we can change the thinking around the event and hopefully reduce the patient’s anxiety.”

The American Psychological Association says the majority of people who experience a traumatic event do not develop long-term persistent symptoms and are able to address the anxiety with resiliency.

trauma, those with emotional connections, those with poor mental health histories, or those who lack proper social support, grief and anxiety can wax and wane with varying intensity.

Anniversaries, and even innocuous popping sounds, the sight of blood, or a bad dream, can cause flashbacks, and a relapse into depression, terror and anxiety.

Symptoms can become especially dangerous when the original outpouring of social sympathy and counseling dissipates into isolation.

As the social support network decreases, the individual is left with symptoms that may be getting stronger instead of lessening.

Jeremy Richman, took his life more thanover six years after the death of his daughter, Avielle, in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting (killing 28 people).

Richman, a neuropharmacologist, committed suicide in the building housing the Avielle Foundation, the violence-prevention nonprofit he created in his daughter’s memory.

The American Psychological Association identifies three phases of healing: the acute, intermediate, and long-term phase. The acute phase, immediately following the trauma, is often characterized by denial, shock and disbelief. The intermediate phase, lasting several days to weeks after the trauma, often includes fear, anger, anxiety, difficulty paying attention, depression and disturbed sleeping habits.

While most people find resiliency and abatement from the symptoms by then, those whothat enter the long-term phase, suffer from debilitating anxiety, flashbacks, and are susceptible to self-medicating to escape their anxiety and depression.

Emano said, by using cognitive behavioral therapy, counselors and therapists can help strengthen the

NEWS NEWS patient’s responses to both external and internal challenges and help build greater resiliency.

“By helping to influence the patient’s thoughts and behaviors, we hope to reduce the anxiety so patients no longer have to avoid certain stressful situations,” said Emano.

“We explore the patient’s assumptions, interpretations and beliefs about returning to places where the trauma occurred. We discuss and challenge the notion that another shooting is likely to occur and they have no power to alter their future.

We help them recognize the distortions in their cognition. By restructuring these thoughts away from false assumptions, we can focus on healthier thoughts premised on facts and reality.”

Emano said when the 2008 Northern Illinois University shooting occurred, killing six people, the school solicited outside licensed counseling volunteers to help their students. They outreached to the community because the demand for support overwhelmed the school. In a similar situation, College of DuPage would likely seek outside help.

The college employs two mental health counselors, and based on demand, limits the amount of personal sessions to six meetings with each student. If a breakthrough cannot be made in six sessions, or the student’s symptoms are too severe, the student is referred for outside help.

“We want to know what you are experiencing and assess what troubles you are dealing with,” said

Emano. “We then explore their social history. Is there any history of psychological treatment; have they been on medication in the past?

Family history can also contribute.

We try to develop a full picture of the person’s history to understand what they are currently dealing with. We then ask them what they are looking for. Some students only come here because they were told by a teacher or a parent to come.

It’s hard to breakthrough with the student unless the student has a motivation for counseling and improving.”

Emano said the college’s counseling services tries to reach out to students through forums and mass -emails. Faculty often tells students that counseling is available if need-

ed. He stressed, people need to make the choice to come in,; and they will always be here to help.

For students looking to make a career out of helping others through psychology or counseling, Emano said empathy is the most important quality to possess.

“It can be difficult trying to breakthrough with a patient,” said Emano. “If you can be empathetic, you can help create safe-space for the student to disclose their personal feelings. You have to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and understand what they are experiencing and feeling. If you can make the patient feel they are being heard and cared about, your understanding and compassion will help alleviate their suffering.”

TOO RIPPED TO BE A RIPPER Madison Venckus venckusm1845@dupage.edu

The new Netflix film, “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” tells the story of the serial killer, Ted Bundy, who’s played by Zac Efron. Unlike previous Bundy films, the movie follows his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kendall, who’s played by Lily Collins.

The film was very well-done, but casting Efron as Ted Bundy was a mistake. Efron is notorious for his good looks and charisma, which over sexualized Bundy’s violence and murder.

Efron has recently starred in movies such as “Baywatch,” “Neighbors” and “Dirty Grand-

pa.” Everyone familiar with his movies knows Efron usually plays the buff jock, so casting an actor surrounded by that stigma for the role of a serial killer goes too far. Yes, the real Ted Bundy was charming, but there are plenty of other attractive actors who haven’t played the role of a fraternity brother or shirtless lifeguard.

The addition of Kendall’s point of view throughout the story added an interesting twist to the plot line. The film’s producer, Joe Berlinger, wanted the audience to invest in the relationship between Bundy and Kendall and to believe

that relationship might last.

“When she [Kendall] finally holds him accountable, I wanted the audience to also feel the same level of disgust that she’s feeling because, for the first half of the movie, you were almost lulled into a sense of, well, maybe he’s not such a bad guy. I want people to feel revolted at the end,” Berlinger said during an Esquire interview.

Besides poorly casting Bundy, the film itself was very impressive.

I watched the Netflix documentary, “Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes,” which goes through Bundy’s criminal life

in greater detail. Being already familiar with the plotline, I was impressed with Berlinger’s accuracy in including both details from Bundy’s life and on his crimes.

Overall, I was impressed with Berlinger’s “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.” I still don’t believe sexualizing murderers is appropriate. With that being said, I’ve already seen the film three times, so I would definitely recommend it to any movie buffs and documentary fans.

BEING MUSLIM IN TRUMP’S AMERICA Karla Villegas Pineda, News Corespondent villegaspinedak@dupage.edu Living in an era where the president of the United States has supported and campaigned upon ideas of hate and division, especially surrounding the Muslim community, has vastly changed the way civilians perceive Muslims.

Amira Abuarqoub a Muslim student at the College of DuPage noted that since the beginning of the Trump administration, she has dealt with microaggressions in everyday life.

“I work at Starbucks. Sometimes I’ll get people that say God bless you, or Jesus loves you, just the smallest comments that don’t need to be said but wouldn’t have been said if I wasn’t wearing this [hijab],” said Abuarqoub.

When asked about the threats towards Muslim congresswoman Ilhan Omar, COD counselor Amal Jarad, who is also Muslim, noted the difference in which Omar is treated when compared to other congressmen and women.

“For someone like a senator to be threatened like that…” Jarad shook her head. “This would never happen for someone who is Caucasian or from a different background.”

Alternately, Abuarqoub also recognized Omar’s bravery to continue to be the visible representative of the Muslim community in Congress.

“I have so many friends who are majoring in all these political science, public policy, in things that are political because we want to see the change,” said Abuarquob.

“How do we do that? We go in power and implement change.”

After devastating attacks targeting Muslims, such as the acts of terrorism at the Christchurch mosque

in New Zealand, both Abuarqoub and Jarad recognized fear and tension within the community.

“Whenever there is something that happens, especially if that thing is negative, [Muslim] students are worried about their safety. Is it a safe day to come? How do we know that this will not happen to us?” asked Jarad. “Even if it’s far away, like what happened in New Zealand, I know there are some students that stayed away because they were afraid.”

Since the start of the Trump administration, Abuarqoub recognized the need to be strong in her own self-image.

“I have to be more confident in who I am. I definitely have to look

out more and just hold myself to a higher standard. I have to look out and say, ‘How do I represent myself just without even somebody talking to me?’ It sucks that I have to do that, but it has to be done in order for me to defend my religion and to defend who I am.”

Yet, despite the creeping fear and constant frustration, Abuarqoub is stronger in her faith than ever.

“I’m not going to let a white guy tell me who I am,” she said. “This makes me want to go out and learn more about my heritage, my religion [and] my background so that when I’m faced with a situation where I need to defend myself, that I know who I am; when I hear comments, that I’m firm in who I

believe that I am and confident in myself.”

Finally, Jarad notices the solidarity of people with the Muslim community, especially since the mistreatment of Muslims has been going viral.

“This kind of behavior from the president brought out the other side—the people who used to be bystanders were pushed to take a stand,” says Jarad. “Today you will find people who will step in and say, ‘you have no right to say that.’”

THE RISE OF BLACK HAIR DeAnte Washington, Staff writer washingtond1614@dupage.edu As a young, black man, my hair was just part of what made me different in high school. Too often, that meant negative judgement.

People shamed me. Some said my hair looked “nappy,” and it drove me to the point where I cut it off so it wouldn’t be a distraction to anyone.

I’m far from the only black person who has had a negative experience because of my hair. My situation doesn’t even compare to the millions of black women and men who have dealt with far worse hatred because of their hair. But there’s new reason to hope such hatred may be dying out.

For the first time in history, Miss America, Miss Teen USA and Miss

USA are all black women. Cheslie Kryst, Miss USA; Kaleigh Garris, Miss Teen USA; and Nia Franklin, Miss America have set a milestone for women of color who have felt inferior to beauty standards.

Over decades, beauty has become a concept that is welcoming to everyone of race, ethnicity, gender, and sex. It’s important to black culture because for hundreds of years, and still today, we are challenged and judged by what we believe is beautiful.

From magazines to social media, black people are frowned upon for the color of their skin, facial features and body images. Seeing three beautiful women of color win beauty pageants brings back more than

just a crown; it’s a blow against the history of dehumanization, segregation, slavery, self hatred and everything else that was made to keep black people powerless.

Natural hair is an accomplishment. Two of the winners embraced their natural hair in the pageant.

People who are not of color do not realize the value African-Americans put into their hair and how our hair is our presentation wherever we go.

Taria Murphy, co-president of the Black Student Alliance at the College of DuPage said her natural hair is a point of personal pride.

“It’s beautiful, coily, (has) a mind of its own and needs nourishment and love,” Murphy said.

On average, it takes her approx-

imately 2 hours to have her hair done.

“I have super coily, thick hair so it takes longer than usual,” Murphy said. Like so many, she’s also experienced uncomfortable moments because of the looks she’s chosen for her hair.

“They think I don’t have the ‘typical’ black girl hair,” Murphy said.

“In middle school there was a white girl who sat behind me in class who was distracted by my hair and decided to tell the teacher about it.”

Other black women were also envious of her hair and used hatred instead of compliments.

“I believe a lot of it comes from other black girls that aren’t natural,” Murphy said.”

OPINION She has always felt a connection with her natural hair due to the teaching of her mother, who encouraged her to keep it.

“My mother encouraged me to be natural. The worst thing I’ve done is straighten my hair when I was younger,” Murphy said.

She had to cut her hair, because of heat damage, and felt uncomfortable with her short hair.

“I felt like the perceptions others would have on me determined how I saw my hair. I was so used to it being long, straight and kept because it was ‘acceptable’ to people,” Murphy said. Today, Murphy is starting to see the natural hair community become larger in size.

“You can’t turn left or right without seeing someone with their natural hair, but when I was growing up it was taboo,” Murphy said. “I think people categorize black hair, if you’re light skinned you’re sup-

posed to have mixed-race hair or if you’re dark skinned it’s supposed to be kinky, forcy hair,” Murphy said.

“Your hair grows out your scalp based off your genetics, not your skin tone.”

Murphy emphasize the beauty and the importance of embracing your hair. She was excited to hear about the beauty pageant winners.

“As black women we are accepting we don’t need to have straight hair or weaves to compete with white women, even outside of beauty pageants.” Murphy said. “I believe representation matters. Win or lose they still represented themselves in whole,” Murphy said.

It may have been an uprise in the beauty industry, but in the workforce, Murphy believes differently.

“There is discrimination in the workforce when it comes to African American men and women’s hairstyle,” she said. “No one is tell-

11 ing a white woman or man their hair is too straight,” Murphy said.

“I believe that it’s people having issues of others looking different than them. The workforces have changes to do when it comes to diversity and inclusion.”

Murphy hopes black children learn to love their natural hair.

She wants black children to know the history behind it, why it is so special to her and other black men and women.

“Love it. Embrace it. If you want an afro, wear it, but know the history behind black hair,” Murphy said.

“What you have on top of your head does not define who you are.

You’re still going to be you.”

Murphy taught me a lesson about my own hair. Natural hair, and its challenges, is common ground for the whole black community. In speaking to others, I was even called out for only going to the ethnic hair

aisle in Walmart to use on my natural hair. As we laughed about dry hair, hair products, and the irritation of trying to get a slick bun I couldn’t help but see the smile on each individual’s face as they were complimenting their own hair.

I understand everyone’s hair is different regardless of their race, but it is important to black people and myself that there is recognition of our hair. White people don’t know the history behind it, and what it truly means to the black community when society is starting to embrace a part of us that was never accepted. For non-black readers, this is not to exclude but to educate others on the importance and struggles of the status of our hair in this world.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport recently ruled female athletes with high testosterone levels can no longer compete as women. The ruling came in the legal case brought against the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)

by South African middle distance runner Caster Semenya. The professional female athletes who will be affected by this decision cannot control the hormones their bodies naturally produce. They should not be punished for a naturally occurring process in their bodies.

Semanya has long been a controversial figure in the world of track and field. The IAAF argues the high levels of testosterone in Semenya and other female athletes like her such as Indian sprinter Dutee Chand give them an unfair advantage over their competitors whose testosterone levels are in the so-called acceptable range of below five nanomoles per liter (5nmol/L).

Over the years many fans of the sport have also negatively commented on Semenya’s physique. Many believe she appears to be “stronger” and “more powerful” than her opponents, and that her high levels of testosterone contribute to this.

Semenya’s testosterone levels should not be seen as more abnormal than any other natural physical advantage many other prominent athletes possess. Famous sprinter Usain Bolt’s height has been said to give him a significant advantage on the track. His 6’ 5’’ frame makes him noticeably taller than many of his rivals and allows him to take longer strides than many other sprinters.

In an article published on the Telegraph’s website by Claire Thomas, Sports Biomechanics Laboratory Director of Cardiff Metropolitan University Dr. Ian Bezodis states, “There is a balance to be found for tall athletes, which Bolt manages,

combining a long step length with a step frequency high enough to run faster than anyone else.”

Multiple-time Olympic gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps’ “proportionally longer wingspan” also gives him what many believe to be an advantageous reach. According to an article by Adam Hadhazy on Scientific American’s website, Phelps is also double jointed, which gives him even more of an edge in the water.

This attribute means his “size-14 feet reportedly bend 15 degrees farther at the ankle than most other swimmers, turning his feet into virtual flippers.” The article also states that this flexibility can be found in Phelps’ knees and elbows as well, “possibly allowing him to get more out of each stroke.”

If these and many other athletes are able to compete freely with the physical advantages they were born with, it is nonsensical to state

that Semenya and others like her should be held to a different standard. Testosterone has long been thought of as the hallmark “male” hormone, and it is for this reason many say Semenya’s increased levels give her an unfair advantage against other women.

Another article published on Scientific American’s website states studies have shown there is no scientific evidence high levels of testosterone actually increase athletic performance in males or females.

The article posits high testosterone levels are “not always synonymous with good performance,” and notes that several top-level male athletes even have testosterone levels that “dip into the female range.”

The side effects of the measures these women would have to take to reduce their testosterone levels are also reportedly quite severe. The same article on Scientific American states the athletes would either have to take medication that would suppress their hormones or undergo surgery to get rid of hormone producing organs. Side effects of these measures could include an electrolyte imbalance that could result in an irregular heartbeat as well as nausea and excessive thirst and urination.

There is no reason for athletes to have to withstand the serious physical and emotional toll lowering their natural hormone levels would lead to. The IAAF claims high testosterone levels give these female athletes an unfair advantage. But what is really unfair is their insistence on implementing a punitive rule against athletes who have done nothing wrong.

NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR GREG MCVEY LASTS LESS THAN A YEAR Tessa Morton, Editor-in-Chief editor@cod.edu

When Greg McVey became the athletic director at College of DuPage in the fall of 2018, he told the Daily Herald he was excited to “wave a flag and tell everyone about all of the great things that COD is doing.” After less than a year in the position, overseeing the Chaparral athletic National Junior College Athletic Association post-season probation and the related fallout, McVey has resigned. McVey will begin the fall semester as the athletic director at Garden City Community College in Kansas, officially beginning on May 27.

According to the Western Kansas News, McVey stated, “I wanted to be at the highest level that the NJCAA has to offer,” during his introductory press conference at Garden City on May 6. “There is no doubt in my mind that Garden City was the place to be.”

During his 2018 tenure at COD, McVey was not provided the opportunity to achieve this goal because of the athletic probation that began as soon as he took over the role. An internal audit and an independent review by an outside law firm uncovered violations, including inadequate documenta-

tion regarding player eligibility.

Consequently, COD athletic teams for the 2018-2019 school year were placed on athletic probation by the NJCAA. When the Courier spoke to McVey in September 2018, just months after his hiring, McVey stated he wasn’t sure the committee who hired him “knew these challenges were going on.”

He told the Courier, “When you come into a new situation, you realize there are things you are going to have to handle as an administrator. You may not know specific details about everything

that’s going on, but you know there are going to be challenges.

I’m aware that there are challenges, and I’m aware that this might have been one of the challenges.”

McVey has not responded to the Courier’s questions regarding his decision to resign from his position as COD’s athletic director.

COD has not yet issued a statement regarding McVey’s resignation. There have been no official communications issued indicating plans to hire a new athletic director for the upcoming fall semester.

NJCAA IV SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT Vijay Kavuri, Sports Editor kavuri@dupage.edu COD hosted the the NJCAA IV Softball Tournment as it started on Friday.

Number 2 seeded Joliet Junior College beat the third seeded Elgin Community College 10-2. Joliet jumped off to an early lead in the first inning as they scored three runs on hits by first basemen Megan Anthony and center fielder Laci Meurer.

Joliet added two more runs in the second with a bases clearing double

by Rachel Goff. Rachel stated that “we were able to get an early lead and added to it throughout the game.”

The game was taken over in the fourth inning as Joliet added four more runs.

Coach of the Joliet Wolves, Kerri O’Shea said “we were kicking on all cylinders, and hopefully this leads us going forward in the tournament and big things happen.”

The tournament is set up as a double elimination style, with the winning team being crowned on Sunday. In game two of the tournament, Rock Valley College dominated Elgin Community College knocking them out of the tournament, winning 19-0. In game three Joliet Junior College lost in extra innings to Rock Valley College 4-3. In the fourth game, Joliet Junior College upended Rock Valley College 6-5 to advance to the final versus Rock Valley College. The champion was crowned when Rock Valley beat Joliet 5-0. Congratulations to the the 2019 Region IV Division III Softball Champions, Rock Valley College.
