SUNDAY - TUESDAY RECAP The main story going forward the next few days is the very cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills across northern Illinois. The wind chill warning will remain in effect across the area till noon on Thursday as we could see wind chill values between -45 and -55 degrees below zero during this period. The winds will eventually subside Wednesday evening and Thursday morning but temperatures Thursday morning could again be very cold with some model guidance suggesting -25 degrees or slightly colder. Besides the very cold temperatures and wind chills between now and Thursday morning, model guidance is coming around to the idea of a weak weather system coming through the Midwest by Thursday night. Temperatures will be very cold and any falling snow could lead to another slow rush hour on Thursday evening if this solution comes to fruition. There is finally some light at the end of the tunnel as we will see a warming trend by the weekend.

LIBRARY MEDIA LAB CELEBRATES NEW EXPANSION Madison Venckus, News Editor

The College of DuPage Library Media Lab now includes new services to assist students in developing and producing media-related projects. The expanded area opened Jan. 23 with a ceremony in the library to celebrate the addition.

The new space is 1,200-squarefeet and features state-of-the-art equipment, including audio recording booths, a video and photography production studio, creative digital workstations, and video/audio recording equipment to be used both in the library and to be checked out.

Items that can be checked out include: cassette players, CD players, podiums, microphones, voice recorders, video projectors, laptops, wireless remotes, Canon HD camcorders, flat screen monitors, overhead projectors, DVD players, white boards, laser pointers tripods and more.

The ceremony began with remarks from Interim COD President Brian Caputo, Assistant Provost in Academic Affairs Kirk Overstreet,and Library Associate Dean Jennifer McIntosh.

"We're providing our students a controlled environment in which they can create video presentations, record voice overs or craft digital designs with immediate assistance from lab staff," McIntosh said. "By giving students greater access to the necessary tools that help them with class projects, they are better prepared for post-college careers as employers want people with these skills.”

The first media lab opened in the library in 2015. The allotted space for the lab was smaller. Hours and resources were limited. With the new media lab, students working on class projects such as videos, music

or podcasts have a wider variety of resources available to them.

COD Board of Trustee members Christine Fenne and Frank Napolitano attended the opening of the lab. Napolitano stressed the importance of advanced technology with high learning.

"The industry has come so far, and we must constantly improve to give our students the skills they need to be successful,” Napolitano said. “This lab is a wonderful addition to the college and a testament

to COD's dedication to providing our students the tools they will need as they complete their studies and seek employment in a growing digital world.”

McIntosh highlighted the difference between a digital consumer and a digital producer. Students producing more content will need access to more tools.

Students, faculty and staff are all encouraged to check out the new media lab located in the lower lever of the library.

By giving students greater access to the necessary tools that help them with class projects, they are better prepared for post-college careers as employers want people with these skills.

COD BIOLOGY PROFESSOR ORGANIZES SPRING STEM CELL REGISTRY DRIVE Karla Villegas Pineda, News Correspondent In January 2000, biology professor Julie Gibbs suspected she was sick with the flu. Yet after a visit to an immediate care center, her primary care doctor called her with devastating news—Gibbs had leukemia.

Gibbs was immediately admitted into Loyola Medical Center, where she began treatment. When doctors told Gibbs she needed a stem cell transplant, she was lucky enough to find a match in her brother. However, for an overwhelming majority of those needing stem cell transplants, there is no such luck.

According to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, only about 30% of patients needing healthy stem cells

find a match in their siblings, leaving 70% of patients to depend on strangers for their livelihood. The realization that not everyone is as fortunate as her is what encouraged Gibbs to partner with Be the Match to set up a blood stem cell registry drive at College of DuPage.

Be The Match is the largest and most diverse stem cell registry in the world, working with health centers across the globe to help find matches for those in need of stem cell donations. Because patients are most likely to match with a donor of their same ethnic background, COD is a perfect place to find donors because of the school’s large ethnic diversity.

The registry drive, to take place April 16th in the Health and Science Center’s atrium and the 17th in the Student Service Center behind Starbucks, will consist of a simple online questionnaire. Be the Match will then mail a cheekswab kit to each participant’s house, where they can perform the simple test in the comfort of their home. There is no cost to register as a stem cell donor, and in the rare event a person is contacted

to be a donor—the likelihood of which is around 3%--, there is no cost to donate.

“I think a lot of students are willing to be organ donors, and they put that on their driver’s license-but most of the time to be an organ donor you have to be dead,” says Gibbs. “For students it would be exciting to think, ‘Hey, I could save somebody’s life and go on with mine.’”

DAMN RIGHT MY BOYS CAN SWIM CHALLENGING THE DANGERS OF TOXIC MASCULINITY Joey Weslo, Assignment Reporter My penis was chiseled out of marble by the hand of God himself.

When I bleed, I don’t cry. I’m no sissy. Women are conquests. Men are threats. There’s power in my stride, intensity in my stare and furor in my fists. I carry an emotion-proof veneer with distant abandon. I must hide the hollow fear and lonely isolation destroying me from within.

Is this the best a man can get?

Gillette is the latest brand to face criticism for taking a political stance. To challenge toxic masculinity, their advertisement depicts male bullying, workplace sexism, sexual harassment and aggressive male behavior.

The public backlash doesn’t surprise College of DuPage Professor of Sociology Matthew Green.

“The criticism is strong because some men feel the attack is against them personally and against their individual character,” said Green.

“When people feel their identity is threatened they fight back.”

To address male accountability, Gillette reworded their famous slogan to “The best men can be.” They highlight men confronting others on their inappropriate behavior and fathers teaching against the traditional “boys will be boys” mentality.

Gillette finishes, “It’s only by challenging ourselves to do more that we can get closer to our best.”

Green credits the #MeToo movement for inspiring social awareness and action.

“People are becoming more aware of a culture of sexual harassment. Future generations of

men are being raised with heightened sensitivity,” said Green.

Challenging men to take a long look in the mirror, the ad propositions: is toxic masculinity feminist propaganda, or is it a serious societal problem?

Critics have called for a boycott, with television personality Piers Morgan tweeting Gillette wanted men to, “take one of their razors and cut off their testicles.”

Critical voices fail to see how the toxic masculine ideal is not only detrimental towards equality for women but also is devastating upon the individual male character.

Celebrating a mythological Spartan ideal of masculinity, men and boys are suppressed and perverted into casts of societal expectations.

Boys are required to be tough, ag-

gressive, sexually potent and to eschew feminine characteristics that would make them appear weak.

In conditioning conformity over individualism, repressed emotions and anxieties can lead to depression, angst and a failure to discover our true personal identities. Vulnerability is denounced as weakness leading to social isolation and a deficiency in communicating effectively. Boys never acquire the skills to formulate healthy relationships with friends and the opposite sex.

Green believes gender identity is socially constructed and the traditional hyper-masculine ideal is an unattainable standard.

“There is a spectrum of identity, and very few people truly idencontinued on page 10

tify with the hyper-masculine or hyper-feminine personality,” said Green. “Most of society lies somewhere between. Men have been taught that to be a man you must live up to this traditional archetype. In its extremity, it leads to toxic examples of hyper-aggression, hyper-violence and sexual objectification.”

Green believes most men do not believe they’ve been sociologically conditioned, and the first step towards rehabilitation is awareness.

“As a parent, a family member or a friend, we need to communicate to boys how problematic the hyper-masculine ideal can be.

“We need to dispel that violence and aggression can solve problems, emotions are signs of weakness, and men are superior to women.

Just as they have been social-conditioned, bad behavior can be unlearned as well,” said Green.

By gratifying aggression and competition, boys have become conditioned to position themselves in an illusory male hierarchy. The most extreme hyper-dominant alphas are positioned on top, while boys try to ascend by proving their toughness and avoid appearing weak. Feats of strength and tests of manliness result in masculine traits being over-emphasized by the individual.

The higher their status, the more illusory power they claim over weaker males and women. This results in escalated homophobia, violence, sexism and marginalization of boys who don’t fit the archetype.

The compulsion to avoid exclusion inspires the complicity of inappropriate behavior to avoid appearing effeminate.

“The herd mentality plays upon group dynamics, and it’s very difficult to challenge the collective way of thinking,” said Green. “One must maintain the strength in their individuality and not conform to

group pressures. If you fail to follow their hyper-masculine behavior, the group often ostracizes you with attacks of weakness.”

Green argues the male-hierarchy belief is a zero-sum approach because it positions men over one another and insinuates natural competition.

Buying into the hierarchy leads men to enshrine the value of their egos. In an effort to appear tough, any affront to their ego must be met with forceful action. Failure and rejection insult their manhood leading to aggression as their only solution.

Green believes the protection of male ego plays out in the hyper-masculine expectation of sexual entitlement. As women become objectified, men feel entitled

to receive sexual favors without refusal. Affronts to their ego predictably lead to aggression. He believes this false superiority promotes lack of respect and prevents equality for all.

Sociologists label the aggression as a symptom of “identity threat.”

Studies point to an exaggeration of hyper-masculine traits when an individual feels their manhood is being threatened.

A 2013 study by the American Journal of Sociology found men were more likely to support violence, homophobia and male supremacy when their masculinity was threatened. A similar study in the Journal of Violence Against Women found individuals disproportionality blamed victims of sexual assault and exonerated the perpetrator.

Green referenced studies of men working traditional feminine occupations. Feeling emasculated, men would overcompensate with hyper-masculine traits in other areas of their lives.

“If a partner does something to affront his sense of masculinity, whether intentional or not - she could just make more money than he does the man views it as an insult against their worth,” said Green. “This often leads to eruptions, whether physically or emotionally.”

By shunning and reprimanding feminine emotions, young men are prevented from learning how to create and maintain fully-functioning complex relationships. A void of empathy results in suppression and emotional isolation.

Men are prohibited from forming empathetic relationships with other males and are kept at a distance from their own self-worth.

By building up a false hyper-masculine ideal, men fail to explore and come to terms with the truths of their real self-identity. Self-realization becomes an eternal struggle of suppression, anxiety and not knowing when, or how, to call out for help.

According to the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, suppression of emotions and anxieties leads to depression and contributes to the significant number of male suicides under the age of 45.

The male struggle with vulnerability coupled with the conditioned impulse towards unnecessary and dangerous risk-taking perverts the sense of self-worth. Personal identity and the socially-excepted ideal remain in constant conflict until a potentially devastating resolution is found.

Green referenced sociologist Emile Durkheim’s studies into the higher suicide rates among men over women in 19th century French society.

“Across generations and societ-

OPINION ies, men are prone to suicide because they are taught not to confide in others or show emotional signs of weakness,” said Green.

“This lack of social connection between others results in all their troubles being bottled inside.

“If you believe in hyper-masculine ideals, what happens if you lose your job? What happens if you cannot support your family?

Many would feel they are no longer a man if they cannot provide for their family. They are conditioned to believe, if they are no longer a man, why even live?”

Acknowledging the hazardous personal deficiencies toxic masculine ideals inspire, the American Psychological Association released its first guidelines for psychologists to help boys and men confront and challenge the traditional masculinity ideology.

Psychologists are now teaching boys to celebrate their individuality and avoid submitting to conformity.

They are trying to establish an appreciation for divergence and an acceptance for personal complexities.

Boys and men are taught to explore their self-realization and come to empathize with their true identities.

11 By teaching boys to empathize with others and themselves, psychologists hope to mollify the disproportionate risk boys face for school discipline, academic challenges and health disparities, including cardiovascular problems and substance abuse.

We need to communicate to boys how problematic the hyper-masculine ideal can be. We need to dispel that violence and aggression can solve problems, emotions are signs of weakness, and men are superior to women.

Green hopes as culture evolves to appreciate greater sensitivity, our perceptions on gender identity will also change in a positive direction.

Hoping to inspire the next generation of sensitive, empathetic and complex men, Gillette has partnered with The Boys and Girls Club of America. Gillette hopes continued action and awareness will help develop young men with better social and communication skills.

Inspiring the next generation comes with one courageous act of strength and bravery at a time.

Challenging generations of hyper-masculine idealization will come with significant opposition from those who fear power being taken from their manhood.

However, only in discovering the many equal ways of expressing masculinity, can we ever discover the true strength and value of the best men can be.

STUDENT JOURNALISTS RALLY FOR FREE SPEECH ON #STUDENTPRESSFREEDOMDAY Kimberly Wilson, Opinion Editor

Student journalists all over the country will advocate for freedom of the press on Jan. 30 in recognition of Student Press Freedom Day. A student journalist’s priority is to report on issues important to them and their peers. Administrative attempts to censor the student perspective are unacceptable.

Students have a right to express their viewpoints regardless of whether or not school authorities or anybody else agrees with them.

According to The Student Press Law Center’s website, the student-run, bipartisan ‘New Voices’ movement was created to preserve the rights of student journalists.

Fourteen states, including Illinois, have enacted ‘New Voices’ laws to aid in the prevention of student censorship.

The landmark 1988 Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier Supreme Court ruling gave school administrators more power over what student journalists are allowed to publish. The court decided the school newspaper could not be characterized as a public forum and, as such, “school officials may impose reasonable restrictions on the speech of students, teachers, and other members of the school community.”

The far-reaching implications this court ruling has had must be critiqued. We are in a time when bastion news organizations are being discredited by some of the most powerful people in society. Student journalists cannot stay silent when

We are here to deliver the student point of view on important issues, and should be allowed to do this under the constitutional right to freedom of the press. such people attempt to silence our voices. Our viewpoints are just as important as anyone else's.

College is a place where students should be encouraged to consider opinions and experiences that might differ from their own. Listening to and appreciating different viewpoints is an integral part of developing effective critical thinking skills and preparing college stu-

dents to lead impactful lives.

It is important for schools to espouse an environment where students can express their opinions without reprimand. Creating an environment where only certain opinions are acceptable can have dire consequences for everyone involved. It can discourage students from speaking their minds as well as fuel bigotry and hate, things

that should have no place in educational institutions.

By dictating to students what they can and can’t say, schools promote complacency and undermine the courage young people need to challenge the failings in our world that preceding generations will leave them to fix. Letting students speak their minds develops leadership qualities. The news reminds us every day how much we need more great leaders.

We musn’t be content to live in a bubble where we only engage with opinions we like. We need to hear opinions that will challenge us to think about life in new ways, even if we never come around to agreeing with them. This is vital to increasing our knowledge as college students and therefore should not be suppressed by the powers that be.

Furthermore, it is not a student journalist’s duty to market an educational institution or create what the administration believes to be a positive image for the school.

We are here to deliver the student point of view on important issues, and should be allowed to do this under the constitutional right to freedom of the press. #StudentPressFreedomDay is a reminder that we will not and must not relinquish our basic freedoms.

Students have voices waiting to be heard and student journalists will continue to advocate valiantly for the right to tell our stories.

DEAR COD, A LETTER FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH DeAnte Washington, Staff Writer Black History Month begins Feb. 1. For African Americans, there are certain aspects that must be addressed to understand why it should be important to American society. The reality is, much of the important history is never discussed.

It’s considerate that we acknowledge the stigmas Americans have made for Black History Month and what it truly evokes. Black History Month should not be romanticized nor should we dismiss the years of dehumanization and unjust circumstances black people have dealt with. The history is nearly nonexistent in American textbooks. There are events in this country that have gone unnoticed and swept under a rug.

Did you ever hear about the Greensboro Massacre or Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment?

Were you ever informed that over 100 black men died as human “lab rats?” Slavery started in the early 1600’s and ended in the late 1800’s. This year marks only 51 years since the civil rights movement ended.

Just 64 years ago a black man would be lynched for looking at a white woman. Interracial marriage just became legal in the United States 52 years ago. Dylann Roof ’s Charleston church shooting happened only four years ago.

I believe African Americans have been recognized strictly for their accomplishment on Black History Month.

The rest of the history is thrown away because non-

black people don’t want to have guilt over it.

We have the shortest month of the year to express ourselves, and it’s taken as a pat on the back. Most of the events we are still dealing with are not far from the events we thought we “fixed.” Segregation never ended; it just became less fashionable to do it openly.

Black lives still don’t matter because policemen can’t fathom a place where black men aren’t a threat to society. Our power is stripped as four young black girls at a New York middle school are forced to take their clothes off because they were too “giddy.” Our black LGBTQ community is made a mockery, and every day black trans men/women are sexually assaulted, incarcerated into prisons they don’t belong in, and deal with physical and emotional abuse for being different. Black women, the strongest of the race, are the least cared for. In a country where they are the most hated group, they struggle to get their voices out. No one likes a black woman. Better yet, no one likes a black woman in charge. People who are not of color will never understand what black people go through, and it’s distasteful when they try to credit themselves for having contributed to Black History Month.

For non-black people, posting black content or quotes from MLK next month won’t justify your institutional racism or make you “woke.” It may be celebratory all February, but

please don’t go back to wearing your racist propaganda on March 1. Having one black friend and putting that forward as proof you’re not racist is ignorant and only shows you have racial bias. It’s not a month to convince your black peers that you would vote for Obama if he could do a third term. It’s about empathizing for the past African American citizens of this country who have had to risk their lives so black people can live theirs today.

In no way am I trying to divide us. It’s black history.

In America, there’s been far more years of shameful treatment than we have had of positive change but it’s made us a stronger race. Black people have to wake up everyday with internal challenges that no one but them will ever comprehend. I wrote this to call on you to not only show empathy but to see the history - all of the history. See the emotional scars of the black men whose hearts beat fast every time a police officer looks in their direction, or black women who have dealt with abuse from this country because of the gender and skin color they were born with. Take ownership for the past that can’t be changed.

Reflect on the mistakes that have been made. Acknowledge black people for who they are as a whole and the line before them. Black is the new black - that’s not going to change when Black History Month ends.

A MOVEMENT THAT SHAPED HISTORY

Black Migrations emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and subsequently to new social realities.

It has resulted in a more diverse and stratified interracial and intra-racial urban population amid a changing social milieu. It is rich in culture and has influenced industry, business, art, religion, politics and more.

The Great Migration was the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans from the rural South to the cities of the North, Midwest and West during the early 1900’s through 1970.

Impacted by severe laws and unfair economic opportunities blacks headed north to seek better opportunities. While they suffered many injustices along the journey, this resilient culture brought hard work, sense of family, the drive to grow and learn with them.

Through the Migration, African Americans influenced many

American historical conditions through literacy, art, music, religion and civil rights activism. During the Great Migration, African Americans began to build a new place for themselves in public life, actively confronting racial prejudice as well as economic, political and social challenges to create a black urban culture that would exert enormous influence in the decades to come.

2019 Black History Month, College of DuPage will explore learning through historical and contemporary experiences of a movement that shaped cultures and ideologies in America. In addition to the array of programming, COD will feature a rousing Opening Ceremony, Student lead panel discussions, arts and literature competition, and special guest speaker Chicago Native, Dr. Fredrick Douglas Dixon, Assistant Professor of African American Studies at the University of Wyoming.
