FEATURES COD WELCOMES STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD THROUGH THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE INITIATIVE PROGRAM Eva Koureta, Staff Writer

College of DuPage has opened its doors to welcome 18 students from around the globe. The U.S. State Department is sponsoring the annual Community College Initiative Program (CCIP), which gives these students the opportunity to create an outstanding career in their field of interest.

“This program is not only a chance to follow your career dreams, but also to expand your knowledge in any matter,” said Kayla Chepyator, community college initiative Program coordinator.

At COD, foreign students can pursue a one-year certificate program in the field of their choice, take advantage of opportunities for professional internships and participate in service learning and community engagement activities.

Din Hodzic, a 20-year-old foreign student from Bosnia and Herzegovina, is pursuing his certificate in Mass Communication. “I am glad to be a part of this outstanding program. Even though I have been at COD for only two months, I’ve learned and developed new skills that will assist me later on in my career. I already feel like a different person, more mature and independent due to the fact that I left my country and moved across the world to chase my dreams. I am grateful and honored that COD is a part of my journey.”

CCIP provides them with all the necessities for an exciting period in their life away from their home countries. Activism, volunteering and sightseeing are just a few of the activities the program offers.

Almost every weekend the students are assigned to activities that help them learn more about American culture, such as visiting the Illinois State Capitol, field trips to Verona, Wis., and sightseeing in downtown Chicago. What students are mostly looking forward to is visiting Devils Lake in Wisconsin.

Venera Gashi, who is from Kosovo, said she’s already found a sense of belonging.

According to Chepyator, this program is not only an opportunity for academic and professional growth, but also for personal growth.

Students who are motivated and passionate are those who always succeed in this once-in-alifetime experience. COD has participated in this program since 2012 and has hosted 156 students from 15 countries worldwide. After receiving their certificate students return to their countries with a greater chance of continuing their studies or getting a job.

“The most exciting part, after a long week, is being able to meet with your new friends, I call them my second family, and just enjoy our time in America. It’s a dream come true, and I’m glad that I am a part of a great college with many opportunities like COD,” said Gashi.

As for the student’s expenses, especially when moving across the country, the CCI program provides them with apartments close to COD, which help the students attend their classes without the need of transportation , transportation

For the current academic year, the visiting students represent seven different countries: Kosovo, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, Colombia, Ghana, South Africa.

“The U.S. Department of State, specifically The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, partners with Community Colleges across the country and chooses Community Colleges that have a wide variety of programs,” Chepyator said.

“The current programs that COD offers are in Applied Engineering, Early Childhood Education, Business and Management, Hospitality and Tourism including Culinary Arts, Motion Picture Television-Media-Graphic Design, Horticulture and Agriculture, Public Safety and IT. This year we are piloting a new program in Mass Communication, due to the fact that the U.S. State Department chose COD as the college with the best programs and classes to land their brand new piloting program.”

MUSIC MY INSANE, FANTASTIC, AND INVIGORATING TIME AT LOUDER THAN LIFE 2021 Cody Wagner, Staff Writer

From Sept. 23-26 I found myself in Louisville, Ky. on one mission and one mission only — to see, hear and rock out to live music.

Presented by Danny Wimmer, “Louder Than Life 2021” was yet another music festival I attended just days after Riot Fest in Douglas Park, Chicago. The four-day festival occured at the Kentucky Exposition Center Fairgrounds, just minutes away from the city. While I could say that this was just my last music festival of the year aside from Riot Fest, this event was important to me for a special reason.

This wasn’t just another typical music fest.

This festival would forever be a landmark event that will stay with me as one of my most favored musical experiences (aside from seeing The Rolling Stones at Soldier Field in 2019).

This was the fest where I finally witnessed my favorite band perform iconic classics that any fan would undoubtedly know and understand, as two of the four days I was exposed to none other than the thrash metal, hard rock, masters of rock themselves….Metallica.

COVID-19 was handled similar to Riot Fest, requiring attendees to show either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test.

Masks were optional just like Riot Fest, and as with other music festivals, some attendees chose to wear theirs and others refused. Masks were recommended, with signs encouraging attendees to remain safe and cautious while also having a good time. COVID was ultimately not much of a concern, with the four days centering around hard, heavy and lively music.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Strengths: I was once again engulfed into the festival world just days after attending Riot Fest while also seeing Metallica in the process.

But before I touch upon the kings, I should mention some of the knights that deserve proper recognition. Besides Metallica being my No. 1 act, I was deeply impressed with Disturbed’s performance.

Disturbed brought the aggressiveness of their debut album,“The Sickness,” which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Classics such

as “Stupify,” “Ten Thousand Fists,” “Stricken,” “Down with the Sickness,” and even the Grammy-nominated tribute to Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence,” were played.

My previous animosity towards the band stemmed from Dave Drainman’s now-classic metal phrase“OOO AHHHH AHHHH AHHH”! But after hearing the raw vitality and heaviness of “Down with the Sickness” live, I

began to see the appeal. Their performance was surprisingly satisfying.

Gojira was another act that blew me away. It was my second time seeing the band live, after witnessing them back in 2019 when they opened up for Slipknot. What made the experience even better was the fact that their new album “Fortitude” was just recently released, and I was able to catch some of their recent tracks

live and in person. Despite performing only eight tracks, two of them, “Another World,” and “Amazonia,” were the first to be played live, making the whole performance all the more memorable. Gojira played loud, fast, in-yourface metal that instantly drew the attention of the crowd, as multiple mosh pits formed and a wave of crowd surfers emerged from overhead. Classic Gojira tunes like “Stranded,” “Backbone,” and “Flying Whales” were also a part of their set, appealing to both the newer generation, and older generation who know the band the best. Gojira’s display of energy and power erupted through the speakers, and I felt as though I was joining their world rather than staying and adhering to mine, and what a world it was.

Last but not least, the main event….Metallica.

The thrash kings played for two nights with two diverse sets. The first night I was treated to some of their classic thrasher tunes from both their early days as well as the millennial era. Classics from the bands ecstatic and lively beginning such as “Whiplash,” “Harvester of Sorrow,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “One,” and “Fade to Black,” were met with their more contemporary and hard-rock style such as “The Memory Remains,” “Now That We’re Dead,” “Moth into the Flame,” “Fuel,” and “No Leaf Clover.” This diversity left me feeling almost as though I was jumping through time, listening to some of their favorite hits from multiple distinct eras. One thing that was missing was any song from their classic 1991 “Black” album (or Metallica, since the album is known by both titles) that debuted the hit single “Enter Sandman,” but little did I know my prayers would be answered the following day.

Their second night, the final night of the festival, the band played the entire “Black” album as they celebrated its global success after 30 years while also releasing an updated and expansive version of the album now available on most music-streaming services. Their first three tracks were a mix of one of their newer tunes, “(Hardwired,)” mixed with two other classics, “The Four Horsemen” and “Welcome Home Sanitarium.” What followed was the complete Black album in reverse. Starting with the album’s final two tracks, which haven’t been performed live since 2012 and 2013 (“The Struggle Within” and “My Friend of Misery”), to their No. 1 single that vaulted them to superstardom, “Enter Sandman.” The crowd

was glued to every note, verse, riff, and beat as Metallica aimed at one thing and one thing only, to kick your ass with heavy, loud music.

Weaknesses: The craziest thing I encountered would be a concert goer who experienced an overdose. I don’t know what he was on, but all I remember was seeing a male drop to the ground with his eyes wide open, staring into the sky. I briefly wondered whether I had just seen a human being die right before my eyes. People quickly scattered to make room for medical personnel. The end result was that the guy regained consciousness and was brought to safety. I encountered another issue during both of Metallica’s sets. My cousin and I noticed that Metallica’s sound was a bit muffled, feeling almost dumbed down at times for both nights. We were amazed to hear that Judas Priest were even louder than Metallica. The answer could stem from multiple factors such as technical errors, errors with sound equipment, poorly tuned instruments, or the effects of old age has on superstars, as their sound becomes a bit diluted and doesn’t have the same feel as it once did. But nevertheless they kicked ass and looked good while doing it.

Setting aside the minor issues, Louder than Life was by far my favorite musical experience of this year. Not only was I exposed to major acts such as Judas Priest, Jane’s Addiction, and Metallica, but I also discovered newer acts that I quickly grew fond of such as Currents, Fever 333 and Avatar, that will surely be explored at some point throughout the duration of this year. Louder than Life 2021 was a thrilling, exuberant, provocative event that served the needs of music fans whose voices desperately needed to be unleashed after a whole year of depression, laziness, and anguish in the midst of COVID-19.

FEATURES ACTIVIST: HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH IS NOT INCLUSIVE Devin Oommen, Staff Writer

Since 1988 the United States has formally recognized Hispanic Heritage Month. In an online session on Oct. 7 titled “Can’t Stop Our Blackness: Black Latinx Narratives And Resisting Erasure,” activist and scholar Rosa Clemente voiced that the label is not representative of all the people intended to be included under it.

“We also need to say that this month does not represent us,” Clemente said. “Hispanic means descendant of Spain. I am not a descendant of Spain, nor do I want to be one.”

Now a doctoral student at the W.E.B DuBois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Clemente said she first heard the term Afro Latina on the campus of State University of New York when Martha Moreno Vega spoke to the campus.

Moments like this from her time in college led her to find the proper way to label her racial background as a Black Puerto Rican.

Her session, part of COD’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, pointed out examples of anti-blackness and colorism she personally

experienced and that she says are purveyed by groups that are Latinx, Afro-Latinx and other cultures, as well by governments and their agencies; one specific case she mentioned was the U.S. Census and its undercounting of minority populations as a result of improper labels for racial groups.

“What we’re actually seeing right now is not only the erasure, but the marginalization of Afro, Black, Black-Latinx people within Hispanic Heritage Month,” she said.

In her session, Clemente also outlined events such as the sterilization of Puerto Rican women in the mid-to-early 1900s and the origins of the first birth control pill, which was tested on Puerto Rican women in initial trials.

“The more I learned, the angrier I got,” she said.

Clemente also mentioned the politically significant moments, such as the assassination of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton (Hampton, at the time of his assassination, was reportedly uniting groups such as the Black Panthers, Young Lords and other groups under an antiracist, anti-class, multicultural movement

called the Rainbow Coalition), colonization of Puerto Rico and American imperialism in Puerto Rico.

In pointing out these moments, Clemente named the mentors and professors she had during her college experience who showed her how to channel and direct her anger to learn more, to organize and to cause change.

Her message to Latinx and Afro-Latinx students was that while getting a degree leads to career opportunities, she hopes they also use their knowledge and experience to continue to help their communities grow and be represented.

In 2008, Clemente was the vice presidential nominee of the Green Party, running alongside former Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.

The event was hosted as a collaboration between 10 Illinois community colleges.

NEWS STEREOTYPES AND BIASES HURT GABBY PETITO’S DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE Danny Olivares, Creative Director

“THE OFFICERS HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO THEIR JOB AND THEY DIDN’T.” - PROFESSOR DARDEN

When Gabby Petito and her fiancé were pulled over due to a domestic violence incident, the Moab, Utah police officers failed to do their job and potentially save her life, according to College of DuPage criminal justice professor Theodore Darden.

Darden, in an interview, said the initial confrontation between Petito and Brian Laundrie involved a series of mistakes by the officers who responded.

“I was disturbed at what I watched, and the reason why I was disturbed was because the officers had an opportunity to do their job and they didn’t,” Darden said. “It was clear that the state law required that an individual be arrested in the situation of a domestic violence incident.” With the information the officers had at the time, Petito, as the primary aggressor, should have been arrested according to the law.

Darden says, “Regardless of what we know now at that time, they should have taken her into custody. And if they did that they probably, not saying with absolute certainty, but they probably would have saved her life because that would have set other things into motion.”

On Aug. 12, Gabby Petito and her fiancé were pulled over for disorderly conduct. As of

Oct. 12, Gabby Petito’s death has been ruled a homicide by manual strangulation. While her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, has been named as a person of interest and is currently still missing, no official suspect has been named in her death.

Her remains were found in Grand Trenton National Park on September 19, according to a Wyoming coroner, Petito died by strangulation at least three weeks before her body was found.

Darden also took issue with the way the officers handled talking with Laundrie.

“I don’t think they were as professional as they could have been in terms of asking more probing questions,” Darden said. “There’s one point where the officers and Laundrie were making light of her size.”

Darden believes the officers fell into stereotypes that allowed them to talk themselves out of arresting Petito given the information they had at the time. He believes there is a lot for other officers and criminal justice students to learn from the incident.

“Any time we have a tape we have an opportunity for a teaching moment,” he said.

“If you watch carefully there’s a lot of clues that you should be aware of: Look how nervous he is. Look how distraught she is. She was acting

more like a victim than a suspect, and he was acting more like a suspect than a victim. Her words she was describing as if she was the aggressor, but that’s not unusual for a victim of domestic violence to see themselves somehow as being a perpetrator.”

The stereotypes that men aren’t real victims of domestic abuse, and that women are weaker played heavily into the interaction the officers had with Petito and Laundrie, Darden said.

And it also allowed Laundrie to help the officers talk themselves out of arresting anyone.

“We hope that we have police who are thoughtful enough, who are professional enough and trained enough, and understand how to handle these situations without letting their biases kick in or even their frustrations,” Darden said. He pointed to telltale signs of the misjudgment in the officers’ minds from the conversation he saw in the footage of the incident. “ “‘If he goes back that’s on him,’” Darden said, quoting the video. That sounds like frustration, and we should never hear those words coming out of any police officer’s mouth. Those words should never have been uttered.”

MUSIC THE FIGHT AGAINST MANSON CONTINUES - NOW IT’S ESME’S TURN Cody Wagner, Staff Writer

Just three weeks ago one of Marilyn Manson AKA Brian Warner’s accusers, ”Jane Doe, “ reissued a lawsuit in response to charges involving sexual abuse when the two were dating from 2009-2011. The suit was initially dismissed because of limited evidence that exceeded the statute of limitations. Soon after, the judge analyzed the situation and decided to give Doe another shot, giving both her and her legal team 20 days to reissue the suit, as well as provide crucial evidence of Manson’s alleged acts.

Now, new information has developed regarding another one of Manson’s accusers, former Game of Thrones actress Esme Bianco.

A lawsuit filed on April 30 by her attorney, Jay Ellwanger, will proceed against the 52-year-old shock rocker. The suit against Manson stems from charges relating to instances of rape, sexual assault and sexual battery.

Manson’s legal team attempted to dismiss Bianco’s suit on the statute-of-limitations argument, similar to Doe’s case. According to Deadline the suit was dismissed by the judge, who stated, “a reasonable jury could find that the effects of Warner’s alleged unconscionable acts, including the perceived threat to plaintiff’s safety, immigration status and career, persisted years after her last contact with Warner.

Additionally, the judge also required Manson to file a formal answer in response to each of the claims made against him within 14 days.

Manson soon after decided to sell his $1.75 million mansion in response to the motion of dismissal.

Bianco also commented on the dismissal, acquired from Deadline.com stating, “My hope is that this ruling empowers other survivors to pursue justice for themselves while signaling to abusers that they cannot bully victims into silence.”

The statements made by Bianco’s testimony and legal team highlight alleged instances of abuse by means of force, manipulation and fear. Information obtained from Daily Mail UK identifies the 10-page document by Ellenwanger states Manson used drugs, force and threats to coerce sexual acts from Bianco, including while she was unconscious.The document also alleges he raped her in May 2011, and that he committed sexual battery on her, which included non-consensual “spanking, biting, cutting,and whipping Ms. Bianco’s buttocks, breasts, and genitals for Mr. Warner’s sexual gratification.”

Alongside this, the document added that,``Deadline also mentioned a quote from the formal suit stating “Ms. Bianco was well aware of the violence Mr. Warner could dole out if she fought back, having been on the receiving end of his temper many times. He also supplied drugs to Ms. Bianco and deprived her of sleep

and food in order to weaken her physically and mentally and decrease her ability to refuse him.

Mr. Warner committed sexual acts with Ms. Bianco when she was unconscious or otherwise unable to consent.”

This was also followed by an alleged scenario where Bianco tried to leave Manson’s residence one night in 2011. It was stated that once Manson was made aware of her truancy, he threatened to have her visa revoked, giving rise to the claim of human trafficking along with the multiple charges Manson already faces.

Another piece of evidence that may support the human trafficking charge involves not only Manson but his ex-manager “Tony Ciulla,” who was made a defendant in the case back in July but later dropped. He is now called upon once more, as a complaint was made against him in relation to his company’s defiance of human trafficking laws. Deadline identified that the issue of trafficking stemmed from an incident when Bianco flew from the UK to Los Angeles in both 2007 and 2011 in hopes of being included in one of Manson’s music videos and films that was never released. One section of Bianco’s suit claims she was forced to perform “unpaid labor” for Manson. That work included “serving and preparing food for Mr. Warner and his guests, cleaning his apartment, consulting on his album, providing uncredited backup vocals during the creative process for the album “Born Villain,”and being offered up to his guests and bandmates to ‘spank.’”

According to Deadline, the alleged instances of abuse, neglect, and tourture, was also exclaimed in the suit stating that, “It took Ms. Bianco years to understand the extent of Mr. Warner’s physical, sexual, psychological and emotional abuse. Her career suffered due to the deterioration of her mental health caused

by Mr. Warner. She deals with complex posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression and panic attacks to this day as a result.”

Manson and his legal team will continue to fight the suit as Manson indicated through his attorney, Howard E. King. “These claims are provably false,” King said in a statement for his client. “To be clear, this suit was only filed after my client refused to be shaken down

by Ms. Bianco and her lawyer, and give in to their outrageous financial demands based on conduct that simply never occurred. We will vigorously contest these allegations in court and are confident that we will prevail.”(Deadline)

These were just a few of the multiple alleged incidents contained within Bianco’s suit, as many alleged circumstances continued to follow.

Alongside Bianco, Los Angeles authorities are currently investigating multiple domestic cases against the rocker from a handful of women such as Evan Rachel Wood (Manson’s first accuser), who named Manson as her abuser last year. She, along with Bianco, have been major supporters of California’s Phoenix Act, which allows for an extension to the statute-oflimitations for cases of domestic abuse by five years. The act became law last year, allowing for officials to take a much deeper approach towards the charges against Manson. The Westworld actress claimed Manson horrifically abused her while they were together, adding that she “was brainwashed and manipulated into submission.”

One can only wonder what the ultimate outcome will be. This case has truly been one with major complications and a bit of confusion.
