NEWS VACCINATION/TESTING DEADLINE FOR COD STUDENTS AND STAFF EXTENDED TO SEP. 19 Bee Bishop, Staff Writer

College of DuPage students, faculty and staff must show proof of vaccination or weekly proof of a negative COVID-19 test to remain on campus for in-person classes or participate in clubs or activities as of Sept. 19. On Sept. 9 COD President Brian Caputo notified college students and staff of the mid-semester change in policy as the college moves to comply with Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s executive order requiring the shots or tests for higher education employees and students.

Caputo stated that the process for providing proof of vaccination or weekly test results, as well as procedures for requesting exemptions, are underway, with additional details to follow. He additionally mentioned that COD strongly recommends that students and staff get vaccinated.

For individuals who undergo weekly testing, Captuo mentions that additional testing may be required beyond the required weekly testing. As per the executive order, religious and medical exemptions are permitted to avoid getting the vaccine, however those individuals would still be required to adhere to weekly testing.

NEWS COD COMMEMORATES 9/11 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH “9/11 20 YEARS LATER: OUR COMMUNITY REMEMBERS” John Moore, Managing Editor

College of DuPage commemorated the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with a live event Saturday morning entitled “9/11 20 Years Later: Our Community Remembers.”

Hosted on-campus at the college’s Robert J. Miller Homeland Security Education Center, the ceremony honored the memory of the 2,996 lives lost during the worst attack on U.S. soil since Pearl Harbor.

They were in the air when the first plane struck and found out about the ongoing attacks only after landing. He reflected on how the world changed for everyone after that fateful day, then hosted a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m. to honor the sacrifice of those who lost everything.

Parks, COD’s vice president of Public Relations, Marketing and Communications, who announced COD was offering two new scholarships “to two students at College of DuPage who are laser-focused on becoming first responders.” The new scholarships are the first for the college’s HSTI division. NOTIFICATION OF STUDENTS’ RIGHTS UNDER THE FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA) The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords eligible students certain rights with respect to their education records. (An “eligible student” under FERPA is a student who is 18 years of age or older or who attends a postsecondary institution.) These rights include:

The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days after the day College of DuPage Office of Student Records receives a request for access.

A student should submit to the Office of Student Records written requests that identify the record(s) the student wishes to inspect. The College will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected.

The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the student believes are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights under FERPA. A student who wishes to ask College of DuPage to amend a record should write to the Office of Student Records, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If College of DuPage decides not to amend the record as requested, the College will notify the student in writing of the decision and advise the student of his or her right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the student when notified of the right to a hearing.

The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information or PII (not “Directory Information”) contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the College in an administrative, supervisory, academic or research, or support staff position (including law enforcement unit personnel and health staff); a person serving on the board of trustees; or a student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee. A school official may also include a volunteer or contractor outside of College of DuPage who performs an institutional service or function for which the school would otherwise use its own employees and who is under the direct control of the school with respect to the use and maintenance of PII from education records, such as an attorney, auditor or collection agent or a student assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibilities for College of DuPage.

When asked whether he is annoyed by the strategy deployed by the United States he said, “There are just so many different things going on, it’s hard to talk about it all at once.”

After 20 years, the United States has left Afghanistan in the hands of its citizens. The Taliban interim government is composed of all men. Women and men are starting to be segregated expressing doubt about the Taliban’s ability to govern the country after reports of violence against women, protestors and journalists.

Just as people came together to show support for this country and those that served after the 9/11 attacks, that same sentiment is crucial for those men and women returning home from Afghanistan. Robinson recommends any veteran struggling should seek help. Aurora Vet Center offers therapy and other assistance for veterans. According to the website, they offer group sessions, tai chi, yoga, mediation, PTSD, sleep hygiene, gardening, horse activities, woodworking and writing. There are resources and people ready to help service members with any issues with which they need assistance, including the Veteran Services at COD.

Robinson thinks the withdrawal was handled very poorly. He would like to see people take responsibility for the mistakes made to prevent them from happening again.

“Maybe have some people look over the whole situation and say, ‘This definitely went wrong here.’”

He drew parallels to Vietnam and the similarities between the two wars with the hope that America can finally learn the lessons that will prevent the same mistakes by another generation.

Left to speculate, Robinson isn’t sure how the United States could have handled things differently. He explains that even with the best intentions, America was unable to win the trust of the Afghans. He theorized their reluctance came from the fear of eventual community alienation and the desire to protect their families.

FEATURES GLEN ELLYN HONORS ARTIST AND COD ALUMNUS TONY FITZPATRICK Bee Bishop, Staff Writer

College of Dupage and the Village of Glen Ellyn are preparing for artist and COD alumnus Tony Fitzpatrick’s upcoming exhibition at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art with the unveiling of two murals. The event happened Sept. 8 in downtown Glen Ellyn by the recently completed pedway, as part of COD’s DuPage Public Art Project.

The colorful murals are centered around two native birds from the Chicagoland area, the cardinal and the woodpecker, surrounded by a collage of pop culture and daily influences distinctive to Fitzpatrick’s work. With the help of collaborators Danny Torres and Samantha DeCarlo, Fitzpatrick created the two 8 by 10 foot murals in the heart of downtown Glen Ellyn.

Unlike the majority of Fitzpatrick’s other works, Justin Witte, the curator of COD’s Cleve Carney Museum of Art, noted how the outdoor murals have an extra note of freedom to them.

On Aug. 26, Kanye West hosted his third listening party, promoting his new album “Donda” that began with two shows at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Atlanta and ended at Soldier Field in Chicago. The album was highly publicized but also mysterious, as many fans wondered what the artist had in store for his newest creation. But even after the release of his newly mysterious and hot-selling album, controversy continues to follow in his path, which has always been cause for concern from both fans and critics alike.

The peculiar, large-scale performance itself was greeted with anger from fans even before the show commenced, with West arriving two hours late. The act itself involved police SUVs, riot squads, backup dancers, a life-sized replica of West’s home and even West lighting himself on fire towards the end of the show. To make matters even more questionable, Kanye was joined by rapper DaBaby and shock rocker icon Marilyn Manson, both of whom currently face heavy criticism because of ignorant and impulsive behaviors and comments expressed towards fans.

The decision to have these artists appear onstage was instantly met with backlash and disgust, as pictures of both DaBaby and Manson at Kanye’s house were presented on social media. Comments on social media were met with one attendee scornfully stating, “Donda would be so proud,” while another tweeted,“I hear Cosby’s free these days.” Scornful and apprehensive comments such as these only paint a rocky road of hardship rather than a generative buzz of praise, especially in the midst of releasing a new album.

Following the album’s intro track named “Donda Chant,’’ which features West’s late mother chanting the word Donda as she entered her last breath of life before tragically passing in November 2007 from heart failure, the second track, “Jail,” featured lyrics from Jay-Z who surprisingly appeared at West’s first party. What transpired that night came with the dissipation of Jay-Z’s waning influence with his verse being replaced by rapper DaBaby, who currently faces controversy regarding homophobic comments he made at 2021’s Rolling Loud music festival.

After the comments went public, the rapper

instantly received a rejection from performing at Lollapalooza, Governors Ball and other festivals while also being dropped by his record label shortly after. DaBaby quickly responded to this growing controversy, stating on Instagram, “I want to apologize to the LGBTQ+ community for the hurtful and triggering comments I made, I know education on this is important. Love to all. God Bless.”

that Sunday. In response to Baby’s feature, West posted a screenshot of a conversation amongst him and Baby’s manager as he explained to West that the artist originally had not been cleared for the cameo.

Alongside DaBaby, former shock rocker and metal icon Marilyn Manson also attended the listening party while currently facing numerous allegations of sexual assault and rape, as well as three civil lawsuits. Alongside his appearance at the party, Manson also had a role in the creation of “Donda.” He co-wrote the track “Jail,” as well as providing additional vocals for “Jail pt.

2.” Following the event, Manson’s initial accuser, “Westworld” star Evan Rachel Wood, posted a video on Instagram of her cover of the New

During the performance she discovered the news of Manson’s appearance at both the party and on the album, stating, “I’ve been saving this but it seems like the appropriate time,” while raising her middle finger. Following the video, Woods captioned the post, stating, “For my fellow survivors who got slapped in the face this week. I love you. Don’t give up.” These words eventually inspired others to share their input regarding the situation.

Singer Cecilia Della Peruti stated during an interview with “The Daily Beast” that she was friends with Wood through the beginning of the abuse, and she applauded the actress for her honesty and openness in confronting Manson as her alleged abuser earlier this year. She also expressed her thoughts regarding Manson’s appearance at the event, stating, “This behavior puts victims in real danger, and perpetuates harmful reprisals for coming out about abuse by powerful men, adding yet another hurdle to the pile of shit we already have to deal with.”

Controversy isn’t a new ball game for Kanye, as his growing appreciation for religion has completely transformed the artist, both physically and mentally. The Kanye from the early 20th century who brought us jaw-dropping masterpieces such as “Runaway,” “Stronger” and “Flashing Lights” is now gone. The abrasive, yet cunning, superstar went from striking a deal with Pornhub in creating apparel to becoming what many would exclaim as “a Jesus freak” in just a matter of months. The image of rapstar Kanye is considered to be dead according to the artist as he recently decided to change his name from “Kanye” meaning one person, into Ye, which means everyone. Ye is considered to be the “other life” Kanye wishes to uphold that has come across as questionable and even whacky for many of his beloved fans. The man who once rose to fame while forever making rap mainstream in the process has entered into another way of living as he aims to show his fans the impact that has changed his perception of reality and the world around him. But backlash will always be at the forefront of the artist no matter the status of his life and personality. Kanye will always be Kanye.

MUSIC MANSON PLEADS NOT GUILTY IN NEW HAMPSHIRE CASE Cody Wagner, Staff Writer

Manson denies the allegation but continues to cooperate and abide by the terms set following his submission to Los Angeles police for the outstanding New Hampshire arrest warrant made public in August 2019. Manson’s lawyer, Howard King also made a statement on the artist’s behalf. “It is no secret to anyone who has attended a Marilyn Manson concert that he likes to be provocative on stage, especially in front of a camera,” King said. “This misdemeanor claim was pursued after we received a demand from a venue videographer for more than $35,000 after a small amount of spit came into contact with their arm. After we asked for evidence of any alleged damages, we never received a reply. This whole claim is ludicrous, but we remain committed to cooperating with authorities, as we have done throughout.”

Alongside the New Hampshire incident, Manson also faces allegations of sexual harassment, assault, and rape from multiple women. Marilyn Manson has officially entered a plea of not guilty on charges of simple assault stemming from a 2019 incident in New Hampshire. Despite the shock rocker’s plea, it does little to help both his cause and life as he currently faces intensive backlash from both this incident as well as many other incidents involving women. Marilyn Manson aka Brian Warner faces charges of up to two counts of misdemeanor simple assault following an incident at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion in Gilford during Manson’s “Hell Never Dies” tour with Rob Zombie. The incident involves Manson spitting on a videographer who was in the pit filming the performance. Videographer Susan Fountain attended the performance and recorded in the stage pit for Metronome Media, who were contracted by the venue for the concert season. Her affidavit claimed Manson veered his face towards her camera and spit a “big lougee” at both her and the camera. It was also alleged that Manson returned for a second time as he covered one of his nostrils and blew snot in Fountain’s direction. Disgusted and appalled, Fountain took action and decided to press charges against the artist in hopes of reparations and justice.

Another attendee noted that he “bent down to shoot his snot all over this woman. I can remember him just laughing about what he did.”

The security guard also claimed that, “He spit on her a couple of times and then leaned real close to the camera and blew a huge snot rocket on her. After he did that, she almost threw her camera right down on the ground.”

A recorded video brought by TMZ shows Manson’s face on a large screen as saliva is shot out the singer’s mouth onto the camera, with Manson walking abruptly away in the process.

Many fans, such as myself, are curious to see the kind of fight Manson is willing to throw down in court. It’s interesting to see the various amounts of evidence presented despite Manson pleading not guilty. Manson will need a strong defense to prove the musician’s innocence, such as credible evidence that supports the artist’s interpretation of the situation, along with conclusive testimony and video evidence. What fight will be presented?

And will it lead to victory in the end?
