It’s 6:32 p.m. in the Student Life Lounge.

There’s a small group of individuals huddled around a stage, chatting with each other. Angel Jones is not among them. He has no idea who these people are or what they do. He only knows why they are here, because he’s here for the same reason. One by one he watches them go up, state their name, and deliver their piece until at last, he’s the one holding the microphone. He takes a deep breath, in front of all these strangers.

“My name is Angel Jones,” he says, “and I have something to say that’s been in my head for a while.”

This past Tuesday, Nov. 9, the Writers of COD club held their first Open Mic Night.

The club feels the event was a success and looks forward to having more events in the upcoming semesters.

Open Mic Night is an event where people can share their written works that they have created to an audience. Everything from skits and comedy to short stories and essays. It gives people the space on stage to speak what is on their mind and present those ideas to other people. When asked to describe the event, Ariko Kaba, one of the performers and vice president of the Writers of COD club, said, “It’s a safe space to be yourself, as long as you’re

not openly harming people with your words.

It’s a good place to be open with other people without the fear of being judged.”

Club President Aurora Troncoso agreed.

“It gives students a chance to express themselves especially from any field,” they said. “If they don’t have the time commitment to make it to the club, they still have the opportunity to speak their minds.”

Writers of COD is a club that was founded during lockdown last year. It is composed of students who have a passion for creative writing.

The club advisor, Trina Sotirakopulos, describes the club as a, “very healthy environment, and a very safe, professional writing club.”

Students will present a piece of writing they are working on and receive feedback from the other club members. One day, a member decided she just wanted to share a piece with the group and not receive any feedback on it.

“It started a conversation about what else might we be able to change and other things we can do beyond just reading things out loud for ourselves,” Troncoso said.

The event is not limited to people who are in the club, of course. Jones was a performer who had read about the event through posters the club put up to announce the event.

“I saw a flyer on campus, and I thought I should go,” he said, “It was very liberating.

It was very refreshing. It’s been a while since I’ve been on stage, especially with COVID-19 happening. Yeah, it was very fun for me.”

Kaba also talked about the importance of the event.

“I think it’s good to put ourselves out there,” she said. “It helps people who are more reserved with their writing. It helps with their shyness.”

This past event was the first one hosted at COD, but the club sounds very excited to stage another one in spring.

“I would attend again,” Jones said. “And I would encourage others to come to the event.”

For those who would be interested in any upcoming events, Writers of COD would be delighted to have new performers for the next events.

“Open Mic is a platform for people to share their talents,” Sotirakopulos said. “We wanted to help the community and create more of a collaborative with the community.”

FEATURES NAPERVILLE DEVASTATED BY THE DEATH OF TWO ASTROWORLD VICTIMS IN THE COMMUNITY Jona Padua, Staff Writer

What was initially supposed to be a night full of excitement and fun for two best friends ended in tragedy at rapper Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival this past week. There are current reports of at least ten people deceased from the event, two of which being Franco Patino and Jacob Jurinek from Naperville. Astroworld soon became “one of the deadliest concerts in U.S History,” the Houston Chronicle states.

Families, friends, and other concert-goers were devastated for the victims who lost their lives, especially in the Naperville community.

Patino and Jurinek were best friends who grew up together and graduated from Neuqua Valley High School. Patino graduated in 2018, where he was a three-sport athlete and a student mentor on the football team. Patino played football with Jurinek, who was a year younger than him, and even coached him while being best friends in high school together. Upon graduation, they both went to different colleges.

Patino attended the University of Dayton in Ohio, and Jurinek attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

The festival was a way they could finally reunite again to celebrate Jurinek’s 21st birthday. However, the event soon descended into chaos. During the event, it only became more packed in the crowd, making it difficult for even first responders to make their way through the hundreds of people. Each person was pushing to get out, with videos continuously being uploaded of attendees being pulled from barricades. Patino and Jurinek were caught in the crowd surge.

Patino’s family sent out a statement through the University of Dayton upon hearing of his death. “Franco was a beloved friend, cousin, nephew, brother and son. He was loved by so many because of the loyal, loving, selfless, protective, funny and caring person he was,” his family said on Monday. “We will miss the big heart Franco had and his passion for helping others.”

Jurinek’s family said he was known for his boundless energy and contagious enthusiasm.

“We are all devastated and are left with a

huge hole in our lives,” said Jacob’s father, Ron Jurinek. “We’re comforted by the fact that hundreds of people Jake touched over the years will carry a piece of his spirit with them.”

Neuqua Valley High School Principal Lance Fuhrer sent out a letter to families saying that once individual services for the two victims occur, “we will invite students, staff and alumni to honor the friendship of Franco and Jacob with a shared memorial service at our school.”

Evelyn Lee, a student at Neuqua Valley High school stated in an interview with the Courier that, “They gave them a moment of silence in the announcements. They specified their names and the fact they were graduates. I never thought something like that could happen to people from my own school.”

Patino and Jurinek left an impact even on those who weren’t in the same graduating class.

Their impact stayed with people throughout the years, even fellow students who knew them or heard about them on the football team, or in photos around the school.

“I just want people to know that my brother isn’t just a number at a concert that died,” Patino’s brother, Cesar, said in a statement to NBC 5. “He was a good, amazing person that loved to have joy and fun in his life, and wanted to be living his life to the fullest.”

MUSIC “LOVELESS” AT 30: MBV STILL HAS US GAZING AT OUR SHOES Joseph Krebaum, Staff Writer

Listen to the album on Spotify “Ten.” “Metallica.” “Nevermind.” All of these albums have turned 30 this year, and they are still loved by critics and the public alike.

But as great and insanely popular as those LPs are, there’s one rock album celebrating its 30th anniversary that deserves more attention. That album is “Loveless” by the Irish-English band My Bloody Valentine.

If you’re wondering why My Bloody Valentine, also known as “MBV,” doesn’t get nearly as much recognition as Pearl Jam or Red Hot Chili Peppers, it’s probably because they were never the sort of band to want commercial success. Their unique bxlend of sleepy vocals and disorienting guitars connected to armies of effects pedals became known as shoegazing, a term that stemmed from watching performers look down at their pedals while singing. It was this musical style of My Bloody Valentine that embodied a considerable portion of early 90s

indie rock, especially in the U.K. There may have been other bands that released material before “Loveless,” such as Ride, Lush and Pale Saints, but My Bloody Valentine were the ones who planted the seeds of the subgenre with their 1988 debut, “Isn’t Anything.” Yet for as revolutionary as their debut was, it was more like a rough blueprint for what was to come. The years that followed found guitarist Kevin Shields experimenting even further, meticulously crafting his band’s sounds until he was satisfied with them. It took two years for Shields and the rest of the band to record the final product, and, unsurprisingly, it came close to bankrupting their label, Creation.

Much of the innovative production techniques involved digital manipulation. Still, the recording process was mostly done on analog tape, making for an enticing combination of both past and future sounds.

With “Loveless,” it was all about the sonic landscapes that MBV were capable of creating.

Not to overshadow their terse lyrical messages, but with this being the quintessential shoegazing album, the guitars are amplified, distorted and treated with various effects. In this case, the most prominent effects are reverse reverb, fuzz and tremolo, the latter of which can be heard on full display in the album’s opening cut “Only Shallow.” Additionally, Shields’s idiosyncratic guitar playing led to a one-of-a-kind technique known as “glide guitar,” a wavering electric vibrato heard on the seven-minute closer “Soon.”

The end result of experimenting with all of these techniques was more than just a great shoegaze album; it was a glorious artistic statement among any genre of music.

Commercially speaking, you would never guess “Loveless” had such a significant impact on rock music, but it received unanimous critical praise at the time of its release, and it has only aged more strongly over the last three decades.

It’s amazing to hear all the different textures of this album imitated by popular alternative rock groups, such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, Deftones, M83 and Coldplay. Artists including Robert Smith (The Cure) and Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) have referred to it as inspirational. Even in the music from up-andcoming artists, it’s hard to deny the influence songs like “To Here Knows When” and “Come in Alone” have had on their heavenly atmospheres.

“Loveless” is considered by many to be the embodiment of shoegazing, but it sadly became a death knell for the movement as well. After its release, every shoegaze album would be overshadowed by it. Even My Bloody Valentine wouldn’t release another studio album for 22 years. Thus, the shoegaze movement faded away within the next few years, and while most other albums within the subgenre have unfortunately been forgotten, “Loveless” remains a pinnacle of pop culture. Even after 30 years, MBV still has us gazing at our shoes.

MUSIC LIMP BIZKIT “STILL SUCKS” REVIEW Cody Wagner, Staff Writer

Almost a decade has passed since the notorious Nu-Metal act Limp Bizkit released their poorly sold 2011 album “Gold Cobra.” It was an album that left many fans disappointed and enhanced the ``love-hate” relationship between the group and the music world. But beyond the controversy, the band made a name for themselves as one of the pioneers of Nu-Metal, combining elements of hip-hop, rap and aggressive metal into music that reflected anger, abrasiveness and heaviness and songs that made you want to get up and “jump around.” Now the Bizkit Boys are back in business and ready to take charge once more, as their newest album “Still Sucks,” released on Oct. 31, combines slower acoustic ballads with that aggressive Nu-Metal sound, reminding fans that despite all the criticism, you can’t deny that Bizkit is still one of the kings of Nu-Metal.

Back in July, Fred Durst shocked the world with an Instagram post of his new look as an old man who appears to be in his late 50s with gray hair and a mustache. The look was a style of music that once was designed to attract the attention of unheard and angry youth But Durst and that audience have grown up since the band’s early years as it expresses a message of revitalization of the group and the genre.

Their first single introduced before the album’s release, “Dad Vibes,” was also performed at this year’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. Durst took the stage and introduced his new image to a live audience. Just two months later their newest album was released and, from listening to the album firsthand, the image resonates with what the album aims to present: a newer and much more developed Bizkit that makes an evolution from their original sound and style The tracklist itself is composed of 12 songs incorporating a mixture of heaviness along with a few ballads that truly piqued my interest.

The more somber and simplistic tracks such as “Empty Hole,” “Goodbye” and a cover of INXS’s 1982’s classic “Don’t Change” stood out from the rest. Their faster paced tunes, such as “Love the Hate,” provide the expected big middle finger to “the haters.’’ “Pill Popper ‘’ takes a straight jab at the pharmaceutical industry for its influence in creating drug addicts. In “Love the Hate,” Rappers Drake and Eminem are referenced in one of the hardest-hitting lines. It doesn’t set out

to offend the two but rather presents a dialogue of what haters of the band would presumably say about Durst’s rapping in particular.

“That motherf**ker Fred Durst / Looks like he fell out his mom’s face first / Yeah, you’re tellin’ me, he’s got no swag / His raps suck like a vacuum bag / That’s what’s up, my G / He the worst white rapper that’ll ever be / Sure as f**k ain’t no Eminem / Looks like he’s got Drake’s pubes on his chin / Yeah, he’s a punk, punk-a** b**ch.”(Southpawers) The pre-release single, “Dad Vibes,” didn’t intrigue me. It seemed too cliche and cheesy, with an approach that would be better suited for older audiences who probably would be dad’s in their late 40s to early 50s as I envisioned Durst in his newest outfit blending right into every verse that was presented. I understand what it aims to do in telling audiences that no matter how old one can get they can always get down with the groove. But Durst comes off as trying too hard to be hip with the youth while embarrassing himself in the process. The track “You Bring Out The Worst in Me” directly identifies the correlation for the album’s release being on Halloween with the opening melodic verse “It’s Halloween And I’m your ghost I promised to haunt you the most When love was dead Your heart went black(Your heart went black) And I promise you I’m comin back When you’re all alone(when you’re all alone) Be prepared Cause you might hear me

a more emotional and personal interpretation to be gained that surprised me at great lengths.

The song reminded me of another great Bizkit acoustic track, “Behind Blue Eyes,” off their 2003 album, “Results May Vary,” that shows a much more intimate and humanistic Bizkit.

But my personal favorite was the final tune off the album, called “Goodbye.” The song creates a peaceful and relieving sendoff to listeners. It has promising and hopeful messages while identifying emotions of betrayal and sadness but is somehow integrated within a peaceful and relaxing sound that almost makes you feel as though you’re on the beach vibing out to the ocean. I listened to it on repeat over and over again. The song differs from their heavily anarchic sound but it works in the end giving the album even greater status and connection amongst audiences. It’s an unexpected gem from a band whose sole purpose was, and still is, to piss people off.

Limp Bizkit’s “Still Sucks” offered varying tracks that would satisfy some more than others.

Not every track is likeable, but the ones that are especially their acoustic tunes- offer a newer and more innovative Bizkit.

Overall Score: 7/10

This then leads into a terrifying and intensified chorus that lasts about a minute leading once more into a melodic tone as this shift in sound makes it one that directly identifies with the horror themed tone.

What I loved most about this album were the acoustic tunes, especially “Don’t Change” and “Goodbye.” “Don’t Change” is a cover of INXS’s hit track off their 1982 album, “Shabooh Shoobah,” with Bizkit presenting a different sound compared to the original pop-influenced version that turned it into a hit. Instead, we get a toned-down acoustic version that exemplifies Durst’s vocals at some of its very best allowing

MUSIC TRAGEDY STRIKES AT TRAVIS SCOTT ASTROWORLD FESTIVAL Cody Wagner, Staff Writer

What was at first a night of energy, excitement and fulfillment soon turned into chaos, and ultimately tragedy. On Friday, Nov. 5, rap icon Travis Scott began his two-day Astroworld festival at NRG park in Houston, but in the middle of Scott’s set, at around 9:30 p.m.,a crowd of 50,000 concertgoers swarmed towards the front of the stage, trampling everything and everyone in their path. At 9:38p.m Drake joined Scott onstage amidst all the chaos and confusion that was boiling throughout the crowd.

Ten people died. Those dead included 22-year-old Texas A&M student Bharti Shahan.

Shahani attended the performance with her sister, Namrata Shahani, and cousin, Mohit Bellani. According to ABC13, Bellani stated.

“Once one person fell, people started toppling like dominos. It was like a sinkhole. People were falling on top of each other,” Bellani said. “There were like layers of bodies on the ground, like two people thick. We were fighting to come up to the top and breathe to stay alive.”

Bharti was not the only one whose life was tragically lost. The youngest to die was 9-yearold Ezra Blount. As well as two Illinois natives

both from Naperville, who also died.

Blount’s father Treston spoke to ABC13 last week. He said he was holding Ezra on his shoulders as the countdown for Scott’s set to begin was in motion. The two were located in the back of the crowd because Treson thought that the area would be much calmer for the two to enjoy the concert. Once Scott took the stage “that’s when people started pushing.”

Treston remembered losing consciousness, then his son as he was trampled over by thousands of attendees in a terrifying frenzy. Once the father regained consciousness he immediately searched for his boy and rushed to an onsite medical tent. After filing a police report, Teston received a message from an officer and a picture of Ezra. Treston immediately went to the hospital to find his son had major organ and brain damage and was on life support.

Both Scott and Drake have expressed regrets and sympathy on their social media accounts “I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night,” Scott wrote. “My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival. Huston PD has my total support as they continue to look

into the tragic loss of life.”

“My heart is broken for the families and friends of those who lost their lives and for anyone who is suffering,” Drake said on Nov. 8, according to Pitchfork.

Scott also promised to give full refunds for the festival’s second-day cancellation and plans to cover the funeral costs for those whose lives were taken. But this did little to appease both fans and city officials alike, as both rappers, along with Live Nation’s promoter and organizer for the show, are currently being overwhelmed with dozens of lawsuits. According to CNN, At least 18 lawsuits had been filed in Harris County District Court in Texas related to the Astroworld tragedy.

Police continue to investigate the incident as they plan to uncover and examine all possible outcomes related to this tragedy. This includes the level of communication amongst emergency personnel, the plan for security and crowd control as well as Scott’s role in inciting or defusing any of the chaos.

In Aug. 2015, while performing at Lollapalooza, Scott was charged with inciting a crowd to jump the barricades. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and paid a fine.

There were similar incidents in 2017 and 2015.

Police chief Troy Finner told CNN reporters during a press conference the “ultimate authority to end the show was with production and the entertainer, and that should be through communication with public city officials.” Below is a link to my own personal tips to maintaining a fun-filled, yet safe, festival experience for audiences who plan on attending any large or small-scale concerts.

OPINION BLACK FRIDAY SUPPLY SHORTAGE AND HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY SURVIVE THIS CHAOTIC EVENT Eva Koureta, Staff Writer

While Black Friday sales started as an event in the United States, nowadays almost every country around the world has established Black Friday as a day when people go shopping and purchase unnecessary things. After the pandemic quarantine year of 2020, people seem to be excited to physically go on shopping sprees rather than shopping online. However, that doesn’t mean online shopping will decrease.

Black Friday might be the best day for students to purchase school and tech supplies at low prices. Who would not want to buy an iPad for half price? According to a recent questionnaire I did, 17 out of 20 students would buy an unnecessary product because it is on sale, and 19 out of 20 students will shop for their Christmas gifts on Black Friday. But what happens when there are great deals and not enough products?

If you are shopping online and you notice your Black Friday deal is stuck somewhere overseas,

don’t worry; you’re not alone. Supply shortages and higher shipping costs are affecting not only online shoppers but there is already a high shortage in stores, resulting in empty shelves and angry customers.

With this increased scarcity, potentially fueling desperation, it’s important to know how to survive a chaotic event where people are pushing, skipping lines and forgetting their manners.”

To make it through Black Friday holding bags full of deals, (if the shelves aren’t already empty), you need to be mentally prepared for it, which means you are going to interact with people and situations you probably would not have on any other day.

Second, you must be comfortable and ready to visit multiple stores. Thus, you need to be dressed comfortably and appropriately for the weather. Living in Illinois on a November day means that it may already be snowing.

Last, but not least, you should not go alone.

Accompanied by a friend or family member is the best way to start your shopping spree. More hands means more bags, and more bags means more deals.

Of course, you can avoid all this chaos by simply clicking on the online websites and still get your deals, but that is effective only if you are willing to wait weeks or even months to receive your order, if it doesn’t get lost in the shipping process.

In the end, we cannot deny that Black Friday is a day when we can find important or (or unimportant) products for lower prices that serve our needs and budgets.
