COD FORENSICS ACHIEVES HISTORIC WINS AT NATIONAL COMPETITION Karla Villegas Pineda, News Correspondent villegaspinedak@dupage.edu COD’s forensics team broke their record at the recent Phi Rho Pi National Tournament in Reno, Nev. on April 6-11.

Phi Rho Pi is the oldest junior and community college forensic association and honor society in the country. It is the only organization committed to providing junior and community colleges with a nationwide tournament.

COD sent 11 of the 14-member forensics team to the event. The team placed fourth in individual events, fifth in debate and sixth overall in the competition, which featured the participation of 66 schools from across the nation. As a whole, the team broke the record of most events in which members advanced to the semi-finals.

Among COD’s top student performers, student Djimon Lewis earned three individual

gold medals, and teammate Jake Fondel was awarded the Lynch-Grossman International Parliamentary Debate Fellowship Award. In addition to the numerous awards to students, COD’s Forensics Director Lauren Morgan was awarded the Distinguished Service Award.

“This was a historic showing,” said Morgan.

“It is a testament to the passion, dedication and hard work of these students, who put hours and hours of work into preparing and polishing their performances.”

COD’s forensics team will next host a High School Summer Speech Camp, open to residents of community college district 502. If you are interested in attending the camp or joining the forensics team for the next competitive season, contact Lauren Morgan at morgan@cod.edu.

THE GAYLA College of DuPage Pride Alliance hosted the third annual Gayla event, Gayla 3: Under the Sea, April 19. Over 50 students were in attendance with proceeds going back to the pride alliance’s future events.

Attendants participated in a ballroom dancing class, card games and Jenga along with dancing and music.

Event coordinator, Autumn Brose, had been planning the event since July of 2018, perfecting the underwater themed decorations first. Pride Alliance will be conducting elections for next years officers this week along with hosting a final pride pals picnic event.

“Sorry to Bother You,” 2018’s acclaimed directorial debut by Boots Riley, was a wild ride to say the least. The film is set in an alternate, dystopian version of Oakland, Calif. We follow our main character, Cassius Green (played by Lakeith Stanfield), an African American who lives in the garage of his uncle’s house, struggling to pay rent. Green, down on his luck, gets a job as a telemarketer.

With difficult beginnings in his new profession, including advice to “stick to the script,” he is told he should “talk white” to his customers. With this, Green’s career success takes off. While Green is finding success and has been promoted to “power caller,” his co-workers decide to form a union to fight for a livable wage.

Green is faced with a choice - to be loyal to his co-workers, or to join the elite “power callers” and their ethically questionable high stakes sales.

This film is hard to place it into one specific genre. While it is a comedy, it also has elements of dystopia and magical realism, presented with beautiful cinematography and meaningful dialog.

The film itself brings up many ideas prevalent in the world today: class, status, corporate greed, activism and racism.

Students for a Democratic Society at College of DuPage screened this film on April 19. Member Alexandra Westberry believes it was an important film to show students at COD. “Ultimately we wanted to screen ‘Sorry to Bother You’ because its themes are important.

Director Boots Riley uses his film to offer a radical class analysis of capitalism and what is sometimes called ‘false consciousness.’ ‘Sorry to Bother You’ has two meanings in this sense.

The film is about telemarketing workers (who often say ‘sorry to bother you...’) but also refers to ‘bothering’ a person when telling them something they might not like to hear, such as the film’s commentary on capitalism and class struggle,” Westberry said.

Overall, this film was an artistic approach to socially relevant topics we may not want to hear about but are nonetheless a real struggle that still goes on in this country.

“Sorry to Bother You” is available for streaming on Hulu.

ALL HIGH SCHOOLS SHOULD BE ELITE Kimberly Wilson, Opinion Editor wilsonk767@dupage.edu

Only seven out of 895 enrollment spots were awarded to black students this year at one of New York’s most prestigious public high schools. State officials have since proposed several plans to diversify Stuyvesant High School along with other elite public high schools in the state.

This problem is not unique to New York alone. Many minorities at Chicago Public Schools and other low-performing districts across the country do not have access to the best schools. To really solve the problem of disparate opportunities in education, advantages that come with attending prestigious public high schools should be available at all institutions.

According to an article in the New York Times by Christopher Lee, N.Y. Mayor Bill de Blasio advocated for the removal of the entrance exam students must take to gain admittance into top high schools.

De Blasio argued for the exam to be replaced by a system that would

admit top performing students from all city middle schools.

The city has also elected to expand Discovery, a summer program aimed at preparing students who narrowly miss the exam cut off point to enroll in top high schools.

Twenty percent of seats at each specialized high school would be reserved for students who participate in the Discovery program. The program is estimated to “roughly double the number of black and Hispanic students” at specialized high schools over the next two years.

Schools like Stuyvesant often give its students a leg up in their educational and career aspirations. Elite high schools are known to be gateways to a world class education, a myriad of invaluable opportunities and admittance into the country’s best colleges and universities. From internship opportunities to recommendations from influential people, the benefits to attending a specialized high school are considerable.

Students who do not attend these

schools are at an inherent disadvantage. Even if elite high schools eventually increase the number of black and Hispanic students they admit, there will still be thousands of students in other public schools in N.Y and all over the country who won’t have access to the benefits elite high school students enjoy.

That’s not to assert there shouldn’t be a push to increase diversity at these schools. Being surrounded by people who are different comes with a plethora of benefits. Increased diversity allows students to learn how to work well with those who hold differing opinions than their own.

It can also increases empathy and introduce students to a broad range of perspectives.

It’s important to give people from all backgrounds equal opportunities to learn at top institutions. This will aid in decreasing the level of inequality that still permeates much of American society. Many argue those who do not attain the requisite score for entrance into elite high

schools simply do not deserve to attend. But studies show a student’s educational success largely depends on their parents’ income and level of education.

Many students who barely miss the cut off point are no less deserving or hard working than those who meet the requirements. They have just not had access to the same resources other families utilize to ensure their children receive the best preparation for the exam.

Parents shouldn’t have to feel as though they must send their child to an elite public or private high school for them to have the best chance of success. All public high schools should have the same or similar opportunities available to their students. A more equal educational system is truly what is needed to even out the playing field. The best opportunities should be accessible to all, not just a select and privileged few.

SOCIAL MEDIA STARS SHAPE OUR CONSUMER LIVES

Since creating her YouTube channel in 2017, 17-year-old blogger, Emma Chamberlin, has accumulated over 8 million subscribers and 900 million views. She gets an average of 1.5 million views per day across a variety of social media platforms, generating an estimated revenue of $6,000 daily. She has partnered advertisements with brands such as curology, audible, Louis Vuitton and Zaful. Unfortunately for these rising icons, however, being able to take nice selfies and persuade young viewers to purchase their products isn’t a talent. Influencers need companies, not the other way around. Once companies hop onto the next advertisement trend, these youtubers will be left with no education, no job and a profile full of makeup reviews.

Chamberlin is one of many influencers that began posting for fun but quickly turned her hobby into a brand. Chamberlin, similar to many other social media influencers including James Charles and Jeffree Star, has her own clothing line and sponsorships with companies. Fancy vacations, luxury cars, and mansions are all commonly expected of these young social media stars, painting a perfect yet unattainable life for their viewers. Not only are influencers’ brand recommendations insincere and fake, but their personalities are as well.

way to freely express yourself and share with friends, but it still gives users the ability to become anyone or anything they want. For social media influencers, however, becoming an icon and making life look luxurious at the same time is a full-time job.

Influencer marketing has become a multi-billion dollar industry over the past year, gaining a large amount of attention for its unique approach to product advertisement.

Modern day social media influencers aren’t the same as their predecessors. Originally, brand ambassadors included famous musicians, actors or comedians who customers found trustworthy based on an ambassador’s history with the product. Nowadays, brand ambassadors aren’t typically artistic, creative, intelligent or talented, but they’re all gorgeous.

Unlike original brand ambassadors, social media influencers gear

Making thousands of dollars for posting to social media sounds like a dream come true, but newer influencers are only becoming popular from their online appearances and not who they are as a person. This causes aspiring stars feel brand advertisement requires little to no talent.

A recent study conducted in January 2019 by telemedia shows an increased interest in social media influencing and content creation.

Participants between the ages of 11 and 16 were asked what career, if any, they’d like to pursue in the future. Doctor topped the list with 18 percent of participants choosing that while 17 percent chose YouTuber and 14 percent chose social media influencer. It was also observed during the study that 45 percent of participants parents

were unaware of the profession entirely.

Influencer agencies looking for young, promising social media stars have recently become popular. Similar to a modeling or acting agency, they work with brands outside of the company and create larger networks of influencers.

Companies will than use a social media stars following and fanbase as a target audience for their product.

Companies are partially to blame for glorifying social media users and their products. As larger companies understand and target insecurities their audience faces, they make more sales. The marketing used is deeply rooted in the brand ambassadors promoting the products, giving consumers the idea that they’ll also be like or look like an influencer.

Social media influencers and brand ambassadors are apart of the new wave of advertisement being displayed across social media platforms but as a long term career path— influencing is unreliable. Any form of media or marketing is subjected to change like it always does. Taking countless photos and accumulating likes isn’t a talent, it’s an ego problem.

Rather than building a career off of your followers insecurities, become successful through work and authenticity. The best route to success is being yourself, there are no guarantees in this industry but believability counts for a lot.

I HAVE AIR PODS AND I’M BETTER THAN YOU DeAnte Washington, Staff Writer washingtond1614@dupage.edu If you don’t have Airpods in 2019, you’re doing something wrong. I’m a late bloomer. I bought my airpods in February, but I will never forget the embarrassment I felt before buying them. It’s like having an iPhone 4s while the rest of the world is on the iPhone X. If you don’t have airpods, I suggest you get them now.

It’s not just listening to music; these wireless headphones make a huge statement. It’s insane how you can go from getting your cords caught on the doorknob to freely put both headphones in and immediately enjoy listening to music.

Haters will say it’s useless, expensive, or not worth it, but I disagree.

I remember the first time I publicly announced my airpods to my peers, they were envious. The pods are similar to the size of a triple A battery, small, slick, light and pure white. The volume and the bass compares to Beats by Dre, another expensive headphone. These pearly whites are affordable, only $170 maximum. Everyone will question you. They will ask why did you buy them? I will usually ask them which burger they prefer, a slider or a Big Mac? If the common sense proves itself cor-

rect, you would choose a Big Mac because of the quality you will get out of it, and it tastes better. That’s how I would describe Airpods, you get exactly what you pay for.

You won’t have to annoyingly go on your phone and hold the home button to ask for Siri, because a the lightest double tap on either side of your AirPod will call for her. If you are spending your day casually walking downtown Chicago or in the hallways of College of DuPage, the pods are the fashion statement. The nightmares are still recurring. I think about the years before when I was so

comfortable in headphones that were not wireless. I never saw that I was the problem. Now, with the privilege of having Airpods in my life, it is only right of me to share this with people who may not have come to their senses yet and haven’t purchased this gold.

If you are an Android user, my hopes for you were already thrown out the window, but for Apple users there is still time. It’s more than having wireless headphones; it’s a lifestyle.

SPORTS TIGER ROARS BACK AT THE MASTERS

Tiger made the ultimate sports comeback at the 2019 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga. The last time he won a major tournament was in 2008, and it has been a long road back to the top. A lot has taken place over those 11 years, from both suffering all time personal and professional lows.

The fall from grace wasn’t pretty. The climb back to the mountaintop wasn’t always easy. There was his well-publicized infidelity scandal. The result of that was a divorce from his wife, Elin Nordegren, which came to a head on the infamous night of Nov. 27, 2009 where Woods crashed his Cadillac into a fire hydrant and Nordegren smashed out one of the windows

with a golf club.

Golf fans have had mixed reactions to Woods’ success. After watching the final round, Chelsea Feldman was “happy for him and for his fans.” Feldman said those feelings didn’t extend to her personally. She hasn’t forgotten Woods’ messy personal life. She said she “thinks it’s awesome his wife beat him up with a club.

While his personal life unraveled, his professional life was damaged severely. He lost major sponsors, and the injuries piled up for a person who was unstoppable since his unbelievable run at his first Masters win in 1997. Over that time he won 14 major championships over 70 PGA tournaments. During

his last major championship win in 2008, we was playing on a torn ACL, which led to one of many surgeries over the years Those procedures included three back surgeries and spinal fusion surgery.

Doubt crept into everyone’s mind as the years went on and he played as a shell of his former self.

Chirag Shah was “happy” and “celebrated with a Tiger fist pump” after he won. Fans range across the board. Some love him. Some hate him. Some love to hate him.

All that doubt was put to rest at the 2019 Masters. What is now one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, Tiger’s legacy is no longer in doubt. He is back on top of a mountain we never thought

we would return to.

What the future holds, nobody knows, but at this moment, Tiger Woods is a 15-time major champion.

It was summed up best by Delia Jobst as she went on to say that, “regardless if you like or respect him, he had to walk through the fire to get there again.”

That he certainly did.

This song, used in the popular cartoon show “Spongebob Squarepants,” is an iconic and slightly overplayed song. However it is the epitome of a victory song, it is literally in the name. In 2018 there was a petition for this song to be played at halftime during the Superbowl.

This song was released in 2016, not long after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, where 49 people lost their lives. The song was a powerful dedication to the lives lost, and an inspirational anthem for those who survived. Although not technically a victory song, the song inspires the listener to live in the moment, live for today, and to celebrate who they are, because life is precious.

It is a reminder that those who lost their lives that day, were queer youth who were celebrating and enjoying life together. Sia sings about having stamina as a reminder to queer youth, who feel threatened in a world still full of hate, not to give up and to live as they are and as they choose.
