Learning to Swim Is Life Skill for the Whole

Spending time in the water is one of the best parts of warmer weather. Whether it is a trip to the pool, lake, or beach, swimming is a fun and healthy way for families to stay active and make memories together.

But water activities also come with real risks, especially for young children and inexperienced swimmers. Learning to swim is essential to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Swim lessons provide the skills and confidence needed to enjoy the water safely. Our programs are designed for all ages and experience levels, helping swimmers build comfort, learn essential techniques, and gain lifelong safety skills.

HERE ARE SIX THINGS TO KNOW:

1. Start lessons at a young age: Swim lessons can begin early, with programs available for infants and toddlers to introduce basic water safety skills.

2. Early skill development is critical: Children ages 1-4 can learn to follow directions and practice basic techniques, such as getting to the side of the pool if they fall in.

3. Caregivers play an important role: Watching lessons and practicing skills outside of class helps reinforce what children learn and builds confidence more quickly.

4. Use flotation devices thoughtfully: Toys and inflatable devices are not safety equipment. For boating and water sports, always use a properly fitted, Coast Guardapproved life vest.

5. Build comfort and confidence: Swim lessons help reduce fear and create a positive experience through gradual, supervised instruction in the water.

6. Active supervision is always necessary: Even strong swimmers need close supervision. Stay attentive and always avoid distractions around water.

an Essential Whole Family

Learning to swim opens the door to a lifetime of safe fun and confidence in the water. Register for swim lessons today and give your family the skills they need to stay safe and enjoy every moment in and around the water.

COLLEGE STATION PARKS AND RECREATION

The Power Of… Parks and Recreation

July is Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association that celebrates the spaces, programs, and people who help build healthier, more connected communities. This year’s theme, “The Power Of,” highlights how parks and recreation bring people together, encourage play, and support well-being for all ages and abilities.

Recreation

Parks are more than green spaces in College Station. They are where families gather, kids explore, neighbors meet, and memories are made. With 57 developed parks, eight undeveloped parks, nearly 1,900 acres, and a variety of trails, playgrounds, pools, athletic fields, and programs, our community has countless ways for you to stay active, engaged, and connected.

Together, these spaces and programs bring “The Power Of” to life in ways you can see, feel, and experience every day.

The Power of Connection is at the heart of everything we do. Parks provide spaces and programs that help people form relationships, strengthen social bonds, and feel more connected to their community.

The Power of Play is for everyone. Play fuels creativity, builds confidence, and encourages active lifestyles for children, teens, and adults. It can happen anywhere, in open spaces, on athletic fields, at playgrounds, or through organized programs, providing countless ways for people to learn, grow, and connect.

The Power of Community comes from shared experiences. Festivals, gatherings, and public spaces bring neighbors together, foster friendships, and create a sense of belonging and civic pride.

The Power of Nature surrounds us. Parks and green spaces restore, inspire, and offer opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, connect with wildlife, and learn about the environment, all while supporting sustainability and resilience.

The Power of Belonging is seen in inclusive facilities and programs designed for all ages and abilities. Everyone can feel safe, welcome, and valued, whether through accessible playgrounds, trails, or community spaces.

The Power of Well-Being emphasizes physical and mental health. Parks provide opportunities for exercise, relaxation, and stress relief, helping people of all ages feel healthier and more balanced.

This July, celebrate Park and Recreation Month by exploring your local parks, joining a program, or enjoying time outdoors with family and friends. Follow us on Facebook (/CSTXparks) and Instagram (@CSTXparks) as we share stories throughout the month showing “The Power Of” in action.

Tree-centric triumph: CS marks 36 years as Tree City USA, earns first Growth Award

Trees help reduce urban heat, manage stormwater, improve air quality, and support mental and physical health. When planted in the right places, they can also reduce traffic noise, increase property values and lower energy costs.

The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the City of College Station as a Tree City USA for the 36th consecutive year, honoring its commitment to planting, growing and caring for trees that make the community greener and healthier. Only 15 other Texas cities have maintained the designation for at least 36 years.

College Station also earned its first Tree City USA Growth Award, which recognizes communities that go beyond the program’s core standards through advanced tree care and public engagement. Efforts tied to the five-year Cooling College Station plan, which aims to reduce urban heat, contributed to the recognition.

The Parks and Recreation Department oversaw several initiatives in 2025 to expand our urban tree canopy, including:

• A Texas Native Tree Giveaway that provided 1,450 free trees, including 1,000 one-gallon and 450 15-gallon trees, to residents.

• Coordination with the Texas A&M Forest Service to distribute free seedlings at the annual Trunk or Tree-t event, which educates the public about tree habitats, urban forestry and health benefits.

• Oversight of the installation of 484 30-gallon trees, along with irrigation systems, at Sandstone Park, Edelweiss Park, Edelweiss Gartens Park, Gabbard Park, Brison Park, Lick Creek Park, Crompton Park, the College Station Police Department, the Municipal Court and Utility Customer Service.

The Tree City USA designation also aligns with the City’s recognition as a Bird City Texas by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Audubon Texas.

Since 1976, the Tree City USA program has recognized more than 3,500 cities and towns that use urban forestry to enhance livability and sustainability. To qualify, communities must meet four standards: maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, invest at least $2 per capita in urban forestry and observe Arbor Day. The program is administered in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Keeping Our Cemeteries Beautiful: Monthly Cemetery Cleanups

The College Station Cemetery, College Station Memorial Cemetery, and Aggie Field of Honor are peaceful spaces to honor departed loved ones. To keep our cemeteries safe, tidy, and well-maintained, cemetery staff conduct monthly cleanups during the last week of each month, in accordance with local ordinance.

WHAT CAN BE PLACED ON A PLOT

Temporary items such as potted plants, cut flowers, baskets, and floral decorations may be placed next to the monument on the plot, with a limit of two items per plot. Glass containers aren’t allowed, and digging is prohibited.

TEMPORARY ITEMS AND CLEANUP

The monthly cleanup, which occurs during the last week of each month, is the regular schedule for removing all temporary items, but removal isn’t limited to those dates. Cemetery staff, under the direction of the cemetery sexton, may remove items at any time if they:

• Are withered or unsightly

• Pose a safety concern

• Block maintenance work

• Are outside the owner’s plot

Items related to a funeral may remain for a reasonable period after interment, as determined by the cemetery sexton. Once removed, items should not be replaced, as the staff continues to maintain the grounds for all visitors.

2026 CLEANUP DATES

• May 25–29

• June 29–July 3

• July 27–31

• Aug. 31–Sept. 4

• Sept. 28-Oct. 2

• Oct. 26–30
