Raising the next generation: Women Shaping Pediatrics in Miami
Family healthcare in Miami is being led by women who bring both expertise and collaboration to the forefront. This group of five professionals represent pediatric medicine, psychology, physical therapy, nutrition, and family therapy — building a network of care that gives families access to support across every stage of childhood.
By sharing knowledge, supporting one another, and building strong patient relationships, they are redefining how families experience medicine in their respective fields. Their collective vision: a healthier, more connected Miami where children thrive and parents feel supported every step of the way.
“Do what works for you. There are many ‘right’ ways to do things when it comes to raising children, and what matters most is doing what is best for you and your family. I encourage parents to take the pressure off and focus less on what they think they ‘should’ be doing, and more on all the things that they are already doing right.”
Dr. Taryn Dubin, MD Sunset Pediatrics
About Dr. Dubin
Dr. Dubin is originally from Los Angeles, California. She has lived in Miami for the past 4 years with her husband and two young children. She’s the happiest when she’s spending time with family and friends, traveling, and watching re-runs of Grey’s Anatomy (or any medical show). As both a physician and a mom, she understands the realities of parenthood firsthand and draws on those experiences to connect with the families she serves.
Known for her compassionate care and tireless dedication, Dr. Taryn Dubin has become a trusted partner to families across Miami. At Sunset Pediatrics in South Miami, she and her team provide comprehensive care from newborn visits to adolescence and young adulthood, blending evidence-based medicine with a highly personalized concierge-style approach.

Dr. David A. Ross: Miami’s Trusted Leader in Sports Medicine
In a community that celebrates outdoor living and active lifestyles, Dr. David A. Ross has become a name synonymous with excellence in Sports Medicine. From the courts and marinas of Coconut Grove to the fitness studios and running trails that line Biscayne Bay, Dr. Ross is the physician athletes and active individuals trust to keep them healthy, performing, and pain-free.
At Ross Medical Group in Miami, Dr. Ross leads one of South Florida’s top non-surgical sports medicine practices — helping patients recover from injury, optimize performance, and prevent future setbacks through science, innovation, and personalized care.
“Running through Coconut Grove is one of my favorite things to do”
A Leader in Non-Surgical Sports Medicine
Board-certified in Sports Medicine and Family Medicine, Dr. Ross brings a decade of experience caring for athletes of all ages — from elite professionals to weekend warriors. His philosophy is centered on one guiding principle: restore performance without unnecessary surgery.
“Our focus is to help each athlete recover
“Our focus is to help each athlete recover stronger”
“When
like
stronger,” says Dr. Ross. “By using advanced, evidence-based treatments and truly understanding the demands of their sport, we can help them heal faster and stay active longer.”
This personalized, prevention-first approach has earned Dr. Ross a devoted following among Miami’s athletic community — especially in the Grove, where cycling, tennis, running, and water sports are a way of life.
Running the Grove:
A Doctor who trains where his patients train: It’s not unusual to spot Dr. David Ross on a training run through the streets of South Florida. For him, these runs aren’t just exercise — they’re a connection to the same community he treats.
I’m out there running, I think
my
patients, I know what it means to miss a workout or to push through pain. My job is to help them move without limitations.”
“Running through Coconut Grove is one of my favorite things to do,” Dr. Ross says. “It’s peaceful, inspiring, and it reminds me exactly why I do what I do. I’m out here experiencing the same physical demands, the same challenges, and the same joy of movement that my patients do.”
That shared perspective influences the way he practices medicine. Dr. Ross understands how an injury can derail months of training — or how the humid Miami heat can test even seasoned athletes. His firsthand experience as a lifelong runner and fitness enthusiast allows him to empathize deeply with his patients and design recovery programs that fit their real-world needs.
“When I’m out there running, I think like my patients,” he adds. “I know what it means to miss a workout or to push through pain. My job is to help them move without limitations.”
Comprehensive Sports Medicine Services
Dr. Ross and his team at Ross Medical Group offer a full spectrum of sports medicine services, including:
• Regenerative Medicine (PRP and Cell-Based Therapies) – Advanced biologic treatments that harness the body’s own healing potential to treat joint, tendon, and ligament injuries.
• Ultrasound-Guided Injections – Real-time imaging for precise diagnosis and targeted treatment.
• Performance Optimization & Sweat Testing – Individualized hydration and recovery analysis — ideal for endurance athletes training in South Florida’s heat.
• Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation – Custom programs developed with physical therapists and trainers to prevent recurrence and improve strength, balance, and mobility.
David Ross is an incredibly accomplished runner
Regenerative Medicine: Healing from Within
A pioneer in Regenerative Sports Medicine, Dr. Ross has helped redefine recovery for countless athletes. His expertise in Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy and other cell-based techniques allows patients to heal naturally — often avoiding surgery altogether. “Regenerative medicine gives us a way to stimulate the body’s own repair mechanisms,” explains Dr. Ross. “It’s safe, effective, and proven — especially for tendon, ligament, and overuse injuries common among active adults.”
Many of Dr. Ross’s patients credit his biologic treatments for getting them back to the sports they love with minimal downtime.
The Grove’s Choice for Active Lifestyles
For Coconut Grove residents, activity isn’t just recreation — it’s part of daily life. Whether it’s early morning runs through Kennedy Park, sailing out of the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, or yoga in Peacock Park, staying active is integral to the Grove’s identity.
Dr. Ross understands that lifestyle deeply. His approach to care aligns perfectly with the Grove’s health-conscious, outdoors-oriented community. Patients come to him not only for injury treatment, but for guidance on performance, prevention, and longevity.
“Every patient has a goal,” Dr. Ross says. “For some, it’s running their first 5K. For others, it’s staying fit enough to play tennis or paddleboard every weekend. My job is to make sure they can keep doing what they love, safely and confidently.”
Caring for the Next Generation of Athletes
Dr. Ross is also a trusted resource for our city’s young athletes. Partnering with local schools, tennis academies, and fitness organizations, he helps educate families on safe training practices, hydration, and concussion awareness. His goal: to keep young athletes healthy, resilient, and motivated for years to come.
“Prevention starts early,” Dr. Ross notes. “When we teach kids proper movement and recovery habits now, we’re setting them up for a lifetime of athletic success.”
The Future of Sports Medicine in Coconut Grove
As sports medicine continues to evolve, Dr. Ross is leading the way in integrating regenerative treatments, personalized performance data, and holistic care. His practice reflects the very spirit of Coconut Grove — innovative, active, and deeply connected to community well-being.
“Coconut Grove represents everything I love about Miami — movement, health, and energy,” says Dr. Ross. “It’s an incredible community of people who truly value staying active, and our mission is to keep them doing exactly that.”
Meet Dr. SenemarRedefining Midlife Health for Modern Women
For Dr. Jila Senemar, founder of JilaMD Women’s Health & Longevity, midlife is not a decline, it’s an opportunity. After two decades in obstetrics and gynecology, she saw too many women navigating the years between childbearing and menopause without clear guidance or support. Her mission became simple: to bring precision, science, and empathy to one of the most transformative stages of a woman’s life.
At JilaMD, membership is intentionally limited to maintain the highest level of individualized care. Each patient receives a tailored medical roadmap that extends far beyond standard testing — incorporating advanced hormone and metabolic analysis, cardiovascular and bone health evaluation, cognitive screening, and fully integrated longevity planning. Nutrition, movement, and body composition tracking are embedded into each plan, ensuring every woman is seen and treated as a whole.
“Women
in their 40’s and 50’s deserve more than a checklist. They deserve someone who is all-in, experienced, and focused on longevity, not just symptom relief.”
- Dr. Jila Senemar
Mid-Life Matters: A Bold New Era in Women’s Health
Why the years between child-bearing and true menopause are a pivotal moment and how one specialist is redefining them.
For too long, women’s health after childbearing has been defined by fatigue, hot flashes, and the assumption that “it’s just part of getting older.” That view is changing, and nowhere more so than at JilaMD Women’s Health & Longevity, where Dr. Jila Senemar brings over two decades of OB-GYN expertise and a deep commitment to mid-life vitality.
Mid-life in women is not simply the tail end of fertility and a countdown to menopause. It is a rich, modifiable chapter; the transition from childbearing years, through perimenopause, to full menopause and beyond, where personalized care, hormone evaluation, and longevity strategies can make a transformative difference.
At JilaMD, the misconception that “menopause just happens and we hope for the best” is being replaced by data-driven, individualized plans: detailed hormone assessment, targeted support for bone and cardiovascular
health, body composition optimization, metabolic and cognitive resilience, and lifestyle interventions tuned to each woman’s unique biology and goals.
Dr. Senemar emphasizes that this isn’t generic “wellwoman care” but an intensive, deeply oriented partnership: “Women in their 40s and 50s deserve more than a checklist. They deserve someone who is all-in, experienced, and focused on longevity, not just symptom relief.”
Board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Menopause Society Certified, and soon to be one of the first Longevity Certified™ physicians in Miami, Dr. Senemar is all in, has the training, the experience and the dedication to lead this specialty. The space is moving fast: new data, new therapies, new diagnostics, and staying current demands time, energy and commitment.

A Dental Adventure Awaits
WITH DR. REBECCA LENARD AND DR. EMILIA SMITH
AT ALL SMILES PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY
Because their space is filled with playful touches—from treasure-box surprises to drawers full of toys—a visit to All Smiles feels less like an appointment and more like a dental adventure.
JJust outside Coconut Grove, along the lively stretch of US-1 in Coral Gables, sits a pediatric dental practice where every visit feels like a joyful mini-adventure. All Smiles Pediatric Dentistry has quickly become a beloved destination for families seeking warm, personalized care in a space designed to spark curiosity and comfort. Founded in 2020 by Miami native Dr. Rebecca Lenard, the practice has quickly become a trusted home for families seeking warm, personalized pediatric dental care—where kindness comesfirst, treatment plans are tailored, and kids leave grinning.
Dr. Rebecca Lenard
The team expanded in 2024 with the arrival of Dr. Emilia Smith, another Miami-born talent whose gentle approach and heartfelt connection with children make her a natural fit. Together, the doctors bring a blend of expertise, compassion, and hometown pride to a practice built on joy.
THE GROVE GIRLS: ROOTED IN COMMUNITY
Both Dr. Lenard and Dr. Smith grew up walking the same leafy streets their patients stroll today. Their stories begin just blocks away from the office—stories of long school days, favorite local treats, and a deep love for the neighborhood they now serve professionally.
DR. REBECCA LENARD: THE HOMEGROWN VISIONARY
Born and raised in Coconut Grove, Dr. Rebecca Lenard is as Grove as it gets. A Ransom Everglades alum, she spent countless afternoons
at Cocowalk, grabbing treats with friends after school. Today, she lives in the neighborhood with her husband and two boys—often spotted on weekend morning walks or savoring an iced latte from Navi.
Her son is a frequent companion on gelato runs to Narbona, a family ritual that captures their playful, easygoing spirit.
Beyond her local roots, Dr. Lenard brings impressive credentials: Barnard College, the University of Florida College of Dentistry, a pediatric specialty, chief residency, board certification, hospital appointments, and leadership roles including spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. After more than a decade of caring for Miami’s children, her mission remains simple: create joyful, confidence-building dental experiences from the very first tooth.
Dr. Emilia Smith
Drawers full of toys and engaging ways to learn about dental hygiene.
And yet, she’s still the girl whose perfect Friday night involves a Claudio pizza from Mister O1 followed by movie night at Cinépolis with her husband.
After several years practicing general dentistry in Miami, Dr. Smith discovered her calling in pediatrics. Her ability to connect instantly with children, including those with special needs or dental anxiety, sets her apart. She brings warmth, approachability, and an innate sense of joy to every visit—along with advanced training in sedation dentistry for patients who need extra support.
DR. EMILIA SMITH: THE COMPASSIONATE CONNECTOR
Dr. Emilia Smith-Alvarez grew up attending Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart before heading to
NYU and graduating cum laude. Her academic path—from Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine to a toptier pediatric specialty program in the Bronx—reflects her passion for excellence.
IA standout feature is the cozy circular seating nook—a playful spot perfect for relaxing, snapping a photo, or keeping little ones comfortable. Rumor has it the dentists love it just as much as the kids!
NSIDE THE PRACTICE: WHERE CHILDHOOD AND CARE GROW TOGETHER
All Smiles Pediatric Dentistry is built on a simple belief: every child deserves a positive experience at the dentist. That philosophy guides every aspect of the practice—from the welcoming environment to the individualized care each child receives.

Grove Smiles, Genuine Care
The Art & Heart of Dentistry with Dr. Dargham and Dr. Puentes
A practice where whole-body wellness, aesthetic excellence, and patient comfort all begin with a smile.
Ina sunlit corner of Coconut Grove, where music drifts through stained-glass windows and patients are welcomed like old friends, Dr. Dargham has built more than a dental practice—she has cultivated a sanctuary of trust, artistry, and whole-body wellness. For her, dentistry has always been far more than perfecting a smile; it’s about restoring confidence, function, and the joy that comes from being truly seen and cared for.
From childhood, she knew she was destined for the healing professions, first imagining life as a surgeon, then a psychiatrist, and eventually discovering the calling that perfectly blended
science, artistry, and human connection: dentistry. While studying at the University of Miami, a pre-med mentor encouraged her to shadow him. He happened to be a dentist. “I resisted at first,” she laughs, “but what I witnessed surprised me. He was practicing the art and science of dentistry, but also laughing with his patients—friends he’d known for years.”
Her formal training at the University of Florida College of Dentistry and later at the Miami Veterans Administration Hospital shaped her approach into one rooted in harmony— between health and beauty, science and creativity, patient and provider. “You can’t build a beautiful home on unstable ground,” she says. “A smile’s long-term beauty depends on a strong foundation of bone, soft tissue, and systemic health.”
Inside her practice, founded over 40 years ago and infused with a welcoming, music-filled
atmosphere, patient comfort is paramount. Natural light pours in, rock and roll hums in the background, and patients choose their own soundtrack while settling into treatment with warm blankets, pillows, and the assurance of a team whose priority is calm, safety, and empowerment.
Alongside Dr. Dargham is associate dentist Dr. Puentes, whose global experience and patient-centered philosophy further enrich the practice. With a decade of clinical work across Spain, England, and the United States, she is known for her compassionate approach, meticulous attention to detail, and commitment to minimally invasive, evidence-based dentistry. Her expertise spans cosmetic and restorative care, prosthodontics, Invisalign, implant restorations, endodontics, minor oral surgery, and comprehensive treatment planning, supported by advanced education, DEA licensure, and CPR/BLS certification.
That level of care is echoed by the generations of families who remain loyal to Grove Smiles. One longtime patient shares: “Dr. Dargham and the entire team at Grove Smiles are an incredibly caring and professional group… They never let you walk out until you feel completely comfortable, and they genuinely welcome your feedback.”
While digital dentistry has transformed the craft with 3D scanning, CAD/CAM design, and seamless collaboration among specialists, she maintains respect for analog methods as essential to her artistic process. Yet the hands, eyes, and instincts of an experienced clinician remain irreplaceable.
“Technology evolves. Our philosophy will not. We’re here to help our
patients achieve a smile they can be proud to wear” says Dr. Dargham
Her impact also extends beyond the practice. Through volunteering with Operation Smile, she has seen how restoring oral health transforms far more than appearance—it gives people the ability to eat, speak, connect, and participate in life.
Among her most memorable patients is a man who arrived unable to smile and unable to maintain employment due to severe dental issues. Over years of care, his health stabilized and his confidence returned; today he is a thriving executive, husband, and father.
Looking to the future, she is energized by rapid technological advancements—even the possibility of tooth cloning on the horizon. Yet her core mission remains unchanged: “Technology evolves. Our philosophy will not. We’re here to help our patients achieve a smile they can be proud to wear—anywhere.”
After nearly half a century of serving the Miami community, Grove Smiles stands as a testament to what dentistry can be when science meets empathy, and when a smile is treated not only as an aesthetic feature, but as a window into whole-body health and human connection.

The Precision of Purpose: Dr. Silverman and the Art of Modern Joint Reconstruction
When Dr. Silverman talks about joint replacement surgery, his voice takes on the unmistakable cadence of someone who has found both purpose and passion in the work of restoring human movement. “Arthroplasty,” he likes to say, “is one of the best surgeries in all of medicine.” It’s a bold claim—until you hear his reasoning. For him, improving a patient’s mobility, eliminating chronic pain, and giving someone back the ability to walk, play, work, or simply live
without limitation is nothing short of transformative. And transformation, after all, has been the defining arc of his own career.
Rooted in Reading, Shaped by Science
Born and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania, Dr. ___ grew up in a community where hard work and humility were part of the landscape. He carried those qualities with him to the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State, where he studied Biology with a focus in vertebrate physiology. It was there that he first developed a deep fascination with the mechanics of the body—how structure supports function, how movement reflects health.
That early interest in anatomy and physiology naturally steered him toward medicine.
At George Washington University’s School of Medicine, he gravitated to orthopaedics and musculoskeletal health, fields that allowed him to blend scientific rigor with hands-on problem-solving. Orthopaedics wasn’t just anatomy—it was
engineering, innovation, and the possibility of immediate, lifechanging results.
Training on the Front Lines of Orthopaedic Care
His acceptance into the orthopaedic surgery residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami placed him at one of the busiest, most demanding training hospitals in the country. Jackson offered everything: high-volume trauma, complex reconstructions, sports injuries, and cutting-edge joint replacement procedures. Every day brought new challenges, new patients, and new opportunities to refine his craft.
The breadth of training shaped him, but arthroplasty captured his imagination.
Joint replacement, he realized, is a field where skill meets innovation—and where outcomes speak for themselves. “You can dramatically change a patient’s life for the better,” he says. “That’s incredibly motivating.”
Mastering the Future of Joint Replacement
After residency, Dr. Silverman returned to Pennsylvania for fellowship training in adult reconstruction at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the nation’s leading programs. Under the mentorship of pioneers in the field, he honed advanced techniques: minimally invasive hip and knee surgeries, partial and total knee replacements, complex revision procedures, the management of infected joint replacements, and the nuanced repair of fractures around prosthetic joints.
It was a year that sharpened his precision and solidified his commitment to staying at the forefront of emerging technology and surgical innovation.
Building a RoboticAssisted Practice—
and a Life—at Mercy Hospital
Today, Dr. Silverman practices at Mercy Hospital, where
he has developed a thriving program in robotic total joint reconstruction. The technology allows him to achieve levels of accuracy and personalization that were impossible even a decade ago. For patients, it means safer procedures, quicker recoveries, and the ability to return to their lives with confidence. He describes his work with
gratitude—grateful for the trust of patients, grateful for the tools that make modern surgery so effective, and grateful to build a practice alongside a supportive team and community. But above all, he is grateful for his family. He and his wife are raising three young children, a source of joy, perspective, and constant motion—fitting for a surgeon
dedicated to helping others move with ease.
Life Beyond the Operating Room
When he’s not in the OR, Dr. Silverman often heads outdoors. He’s an avid college football fan, and weekends in the fall are filled with game-day energy. Living near the water means boating, fishing, and even spearfishing have become his favorite ways to unwind— activities that keep him close to nature and remind him of the importance of balance.
The Heart of His Work
At every stage of his journey— from Reading to Miami to Philadelphia and now Mercy Hospital—Dr. Silverman has remained grounded in the belief that medicine is ultimately about restoring possibility. Whether a patient dreams of climbing stairs without pain, returning to a beloved sport, or simply taking a walk with their grandchild, he sees each goal as worthy, urgent, and achievable.
In an era of rapidly advancing technology and shifting expectations in healthcare, Dr. Silverman represents a powerful blend of skill, innovation, and human connection. He is part scientist, part engineer, and part advocate for the simple joy of movement.

Embrace the change
For many women, navigating the physical ups and downs of life — whether menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, or menopause — can feel isolating. That’s where Freya Wellness Co. comes in. With offices in Miami and in-home visits available, this women-focused physical therapy practice is redefining what it means to feel supported, strong, and empowered at every stage of life.
Freya Wellness Co. was founded by Doctors of Physical Therapy Amanda Cereijo and Luly Diez-Argüelles, two clinicians who share a deep passion for women’s health and a commitment to reshaping how women experience physical therapy. But it wasn’t until Amanda’s own pregnancy that she truly understood the importance of pelvic floor physical therapy. Experiencing the benefits firsthand — then navigating the challenges of postpartum recovery — opened her eyes to how under-supported women often are. “It made me realize how critical this work is — and how many women don’t have access to the right support at the right time,” she says. It was during this season that her passion solidified: she wanted to be part of better solutions for women, at every stage of life.
Luly’s path, while equally grounded in clinical excellence, was shaped by a deep interest in movement, strength training, and restoring confidence in women who felt disconnected from their bodies. She recognized early on that pelvic health was not just a specialty — it was an essential pillar of lifelong wellness. As she began working with women from adolescence through menopause, she saw the same pattern repeated: women were often told to “live with” issues like pelvic pain, leakage, or changes in strength, instead of being
offered meaningful, restorative care. Her vision was to change that narrative.
Together, Amanda and Luly realized something profound: women of all ages — not only those who are pregnant or postpartum — need specialized, holistic care that addresses the root of their discomfort, not just the symptoms. They created Freya as a place where women could feel truly seen, heard, and cared for. “Every woman deserves to feel strong and capable in her own body,” Amanda says. “Whether it’s someone experiencing pelvic floor challenges for the first time, preparing for birth, or navigating menopause and wanting to maintain strength safely, our goal is to meet them where they are.”
At Freya, the focus goes beyond traditional therapy. The team offers personalized care, treating everything from pelvic pain and postpartum recovery to menstrual discomfort, postural imbalances, sexual pain, and the physical changes of perimenopause and menopause. Their approach blends medical expertise with empathy, ensuring every woman feels supported through her unique journey.
The result is a clinic — and a community — where women can thrive. “We’re more than therapists,” Amanda emphasizes. “We’re your partners, your advocates, your cheerleaders. Our mission is to help women build strong, healthy bodies at every stage, in every chapter of life.”
Whether you’re preparing for a baby, recovering postpartum, managing menopausal shifts, or striving for a stronger, healthier body, Freya Wellness Co. is here to guide you. It’s a space where expertise meets empathy, and where every woman can feel supported, empowered, and truly at home in her body.
Freya Wellness Co.: your body, your strength, your journey — supported every step of the way.

W Inside the Life, Legacy & Faith of Chief of Vascular Surgery at Mercy Hospital
hen Dr. Daniel E. Ramirez Jr. walks through the halls of HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, people notice. Not because he insists on it, but because the atmosphere around him shifts—urgency, calm, precision, faith. As Chief of Vascular Surgery, he handles some of the most complex and life-threatening cases imaginable. But
Dr. Daniel Ramirez Chief of Vascular Surgery at Mercy Hospital
the roots of that expertise trace back decades, to a small mountain town and a father who took a different route.
“My dad studied in Madrid,” Dr. Ramirez recalls, “and he became a vascular surgeon long before I ever understood what that meant.” When the family moved back to the Dominican Republic, young Daniel spent many nights in the operating room—not as a spectator, but as his
father’s helper. “Every time he had an emergency case, he took me with him,” he says. “I helped sterilize instruments. I watched him save lives. That’s where the passion came from.”
His father’s influence didn’t stop with him. “My dad also inspired his little brother and my uncle to become a vascular surgeons,” he adds with pride. “It became a family legacy—almost a calling.”
After completing medical school in the Dominican Republic and training in the same program his father once completed, Dr. Ramirez advanced to the worldrenowned Ochsner Medical Center in Louisiana. There, he performed his first open abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair in a hospital famous for pioneering vascular surgery. “There’s so much vascular history in that institution,” he says. “It shaped me.”
He later joined the University of Mississippi, continuing to refine his skill set—until one day a familiar voice called him home. “My dad told me, ‘Come to Mercy. Come operate with me and your uncle.’” For Dr. Ramirez, it wasn’t just a job. “It was a mission come true.”
Seven years later, he’s not only still there— he’s leading the department.
“I love this community,” he says. “I love living in Miami. I’ve built my life here.”
His wife, an infectious diseases specialist at the University of Miami, is part of that life, as is their extended family of surgeons. “My uncle’s son is also a surgeon,” he adds. “Coming from the mountains in my hometown to now having multiple generations in medicine—it’s a blessing.”
Hijo de gato caza ratón
—THE CHILD OF A CAT ALWAYS HUNTS RATS, DR. RAMIREZ SAYS WHEN EXPLAINING HIS PATH TO BECOMING A VASCULAR SURGEON. INSPIRED BY HIS FAMILY’S MEDICAL ROOTS AND DRIVEN BY A PASSION FOR HEALING, HE PROUDLY CARRIES THE TRADITION FORWARD IN HIS OWN SURGICAL CAREER.
Vascular surgery, unlike most specialties, often involves life-or-death decisions in seconds.
Dr. Ramirez treats aneurysms, arterial disease, venous disease, spider veins, varicosities in the leg, chronic wounds, and conducts complex endovascular and open bypass procedures, saving both limbs and lives.
“We take care of bleeding,” he says simply. But the emotional weight behind that statement is profound. “When someone comes to you at the brink of death, it’s humbling. But it’s also the most gratifying feeling—to relieve pain instantly, to restore blood flow, to save their life.”
He recalls one patient who was misdiagnosed and came in with no pulses in his leg. The situation was grim. “We opened his leg, restored total blood flow—and his pain disappeared. That moment stays with you. That’s the reason you keep going.”
His work is guided by a quiet but unwavering faith. “I pray for every case I do,” he says. “I ask God to guide my hands and protect my patient. It gives me strength and eliminates fear.”
His philosophy is simple: “Provide hemostasis with the least morbidity and
mortality. Treat the patient as a whole— not just the disease.”
He often quotes Sir William Osler: “The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.”
LIFE IN THE GROVE
When he’s not in the operating room, Dr. Ramirez enjoys the laid-back rhythm of Coconut Grove. “It’s up-and-coming, full of new people and great energy,” he says. “I love going out to dinner—Carbone is my favorite—and I enjoy the traditional steak places too.” Sundays, you’ll find him at St. Hugh Catholic Church. “The sense of community there is something I cherish.”
A SURGEON’S MISSION
From a childhood spent sterilizing instruments for his father, to leading one of Miami’s most respected vascular surgery departments, Dr. Ramirez has remained grounded in humility, gratitude, and purpose.
“I’m blessed,” he says. “Every day I thank God for allowing me to do what I do.”

In the world of metabolic health and bariatric surgery, few names carry the weight and respect of Dr. Néstor de la Cruz-Muñoz, MD. A trusted voice in health optimization and metabolic care, he blends decades of surgical expertise with a compassionate, individualized approach that has shaped thousands of patient journeys. With nearly 8,000 bariatric surgeries performed and outcomes recognized nationally, Dr. de la Cruz-Muñoz stands as a leader whose skill, innovation, and humanity have made a lasting impact in his field.
A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and a diplomate of both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Obesity Medicine, he has become a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences. His leadership is matched only by his deep commitment to empowering patients— believing that when people understand their bodies and feel supported, they make healthier choices that last a lifetime.
His journey began with a BS in Biology from Duke University, followed by his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. After completing surgical training, he began his career in 1999 and has now been operating for nearly 30 years. His path has taken him from Mercy Hospital to Cedars, to 16 years on the faculty at the University of Miami, and recently back to Mercy, where he continues to expand the boundaries of minimally invasive surgery.
Although best known for bariatrics, his expertise extends far beyond weight-loss procedures. His extensive laparoscopic and robotic experience allows him to perform advanced surgical oncology, challenging anti-reflux operations, complex hernia repairs, revision surgeries, and rare procedures such as median arcuate ligament releases—operations performed by only a small number of surgeons statewide. He also treats splenic artery aneurysms and intricate abdominal conditions that require precision honed over decades. “A lot has come off of the bariatric experience and the volume,” he explains. “It has allowed me to do things
Doctor Nestor de la CruzMunoz- Transforming Health Through Surgical Expertise
that a lot of people don’t do.”
Dr. de la Cruz-Muñoz’s approach to obesity and metabolic disease is equally comprehensive. With 75% of Americans overweight and 30% considered obese, he views weight not simply as a number but as a key determinant of long-term health—affecting or worsening more than 250 medical conditions. In addition to surgery, he offers medical weight-loss treatment, including FDA-approved medications, nutritional counseling, lifestyle planning, and ongoing metabolic management. “It works,” he says. “But patients have to put effort into it and keep up with the follow-up. When they do, the results can change their entire life.”
Despite his depth of specialty, he continues to perform general surgery as well. From gallbladders and appendixes to what he playfully calls “lumps and bumps,” he remains connected to the full breadth of his training. He also covers the emergency room when needed, ensuring that patients who arrive unexpectedly receive the same expertise and attention as those who plan their care months in advance.
Outside the hospital, life for Dr. de la Cruz-Muñoz slows down in Coconut Grove.
Though he lives farther south, the Grove has long been a weekend stop for his family, especially when his children were younger. A favorite restaurant? With a smile, he names Meraki—the Greek spot in the heart of the neighborhood.
“My wife is Greek,” he says, “so Greek restaurants tend to be our favorites.” Their visits, often after afternoons at the park, offer a quiet counterbalance to the intensity of surgical life.
Through every chapter of his career, Dr. de la Cruz-Muñoz has held to one guiding principle: patients deserve to understand their health, participate in decisions, and feel supported every step of the way. His work is defined not only by technical mastery but by the belief that education, communication, and partnership matter just as much as surgical skill.
Nearly three decades into his career, his passion has never faded. The precision of the operating room, the trust of his patients, and the belief in second chances continue to drive him. And for thousands of individuals whose lives have changed in his hands, Dr. de la Cruz-Muñoz is more than a surgeon—he is a source of hope, expertise, and the possibility of a healthier future.
“I’M A GENERAL SURGEON BY TRAINING, BUT 25 YEARS OF BARIATRIC SURGERY HAVE EQUIPPED ME TO PERFORM COMPLEX PROCEDURES MANY SURGEONS DON’T TYPICALLY ATTEMPT.”
Mental Wellness
MMental health has become one of the defining conversations of our time. Once whispered about behind closed doors, it’s now an open, accepted, and celebrated part of selfcare. But as mental health has moved into the mainstream, some are asking whether it’s also become performative—something expected rather than intentional.
For Jordyn Dooley, founder of Mosaic Therapy Miami, the answer lies in shifting the narrative entirely. Her practice in Coconut Grove represents a new movement in mental healthcare, one grounded not in illness, but in wellness.
“Therapy shouldn’t only be for moments of crisis,” Dooley says. “It should be as routine as working out or eating well, a part of caring for our whole selves.”
At Mosaic Therapy Miami, the emphasis is on mental wellness rather than pathology. Dooley’s approach reframes therapy as a place for selfdiscovery, growth, and balance, not just repair. Her clients aren’t seen as people to be “fixed,” but as individuals already equipped with strengths and potential. “We identify what’s not working and what is working,” she explains, “and build from and on what is working.”
Dooley’s background is as multifaceted as her approach. A licensed mental health therapist with a Master of Science in Art Therapy from Florida State University, she has worked in trauma centers, hospitals, veteran programs, and community health settings. Her diverse experience taught her that therapy must be personal, creative, and flexible to be effective.
She has developed innovative art therapy programs for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia in museum settings and led workshops across the U.S. and abroad—from Barbados to Sun Valley, Idaho. These experiences have shaped her belief that healing happens best in spaces that are both nurturing and empowering.
“Mosaic Therapy” was named with intention of reflecting the beauty in imperfection and the idea that our individual pieces, when brought together, create something whole and meaningful. “Each client brings their own story, and together we work to create a fuller picture,” Dooley says.
At her Coconut Grove practice, Dooley offers virtual therapy tailored for busy young adults, professionals, and couples throughout Miami. Her sessions help clients navigate life transitions, strengthen relationships, and build resilience from the comfort and privacy of their home or other convenient space.
“Many of my clients are high-achieving and always on the go,” she explains. “They’re doing amazing things in their lives, but they want more alignment between their outer success and inner peace.” Virtual sessions give them a convenient and consistent way to prioritize mental wellness without disrupting their demanding schedules.
Dooley also continues to serve clients in Sun Valley, Idaho, where she offers in-person and virtual care for teens, young adults, and couples. There, her practice provides a warm, grounded environment for exploration and healing. It welcomes clients into a community that values connection, creativity, and growth.
Across both locations, the foundation remains the same: therapy as a space for thriving, not just surviving. Her approach combines a personcentered philosophy enriched by an integrative approach that includes trauma-informed care, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, and art therapy to help clients explore their emotions, enhance communication, and develop personalized tools for navigating life’s challenges.
Dooley is deeply aware of the current cultural landscape surrounding mental health especially among younger generations. While she celebrates the growing openness around mental health conversations, she also recognizes a troubling trend toward self-diagnosis and glorification of struggle.
IN THE HEART OF COCONUT GROVE
“Therapy should normalize care, not elevate distress,” she says. “Mental wellness should empower people to grow, not label themselves.”
In a community like Coconut Grove, where wellness and creativity are part of the lifestyle, Mosaic Therapy Miami fits seamlessly into the rhythm of everyday life. Dooley’s clients come from diverse backgrounds, and are artists, professionals, entrepreneurs, and couples. They are all seeking balance, purpose, and clarity.
Her sessions often blend reflection and strategy, providing space for clients to process their experiences, strengthen relationships, and reconnect with their authentic selves. “People who come to therapy are already the heroes of their own stories,” she says. “I just walk alongside them as they write their next chapter.”
Dooley’s own story mirrors that sense of exploration. After earning her degree from the University of Florida, she spent time “trying on” different paths before discovering her true calling as an art therapist and psychotherapist. Her journey taught her the importance of listening to one’s intuition, something she now helps her clients cultivate in their own lives.
Outside of her practice, Dooley is a wife, artist, and dog mom, deeply rooted in the Coconut Grove community. She describes The Grove as a place of creativity and calm. It’s a fitting backdrop for her work. “Coconut Grove has this incredible energy,” she says. “It encourages you to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with yourself in the middle of bustling Miami. That’s what I want Mosaic Therapy Miami to offer people, a space to pause and rediscover their own rhythm.”
Ultimately, Dooley’s mission is simple yet profound: to make mental wellness as natural and essential as any other part of our health routine.
As she reflects on her journey, she smiles and adds, “I needed to meet my soul—so I know what it feels like to want to meet yours.”
Coconut Grove has this incredible energy, it encourages you to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with yourself in the middle of bustling Miami. That’s what I want Mosaic Therapy Miami to offer people, a space to pause and rediscover their own rhythm.

Dr. Maria A Barcena is a board-certified Allergist and Immunologist
Breathing Easier:
HOW
DR. MARÍA A. BÁRCENA IS RISING TO THE TOP AT TOP ALLERGY
In the heart of Miami, a quiet revolution is unfolding in the field of allergy and immunology. TOP Allergy, a boutique clinic led by Dr. María A. Bárcena alongside Dr. Rolando Núñez, is redefining what it means to treat allergies—not just with medicine, but with compassion, innovation, and genuine human connection.
A VISION ROOTED IN HEALING AND EMPATHY
Dr. María A. Bárcena brings a rare blend of expertise and warmth to her practice. Born in Colombia, she completed her medical training there before moving to the United States, where she did her internal medicine residency and then a fellowship in Allergy & Immunology at the Cleveland Clinic — one of the most respected institutions in the field.
Since settling in Miami, Dr. Bárcena has woven her international background into her work: she understands her patients’ cultural nuances and communicates in their language—not just literally, but emotionally. At TOP Allergy, she doesn’t simply prescribe treatments; she listens, educates, and builds long-term relationships. Her board certification underscores her deep technical skill, but it’s her empathy that shapes the core of her practice.
PERSONALIZED CARE FOR COMPLEX IMMUNE CHALLENGES
At TOP Allergy, no two patients are treated the same—and that’s by design. The clinic’s service palette is broad yet highly specialized, offering diagnostics and treatment for:
• Environmental allergies like allergic rhinitis and sinus inflammation;
• Food allergies, including hives, swelling, or life-threatening reac tions;
• Asthma, with lung-function testing and modern biologic therapies;
• Drug allergies, managed through careful challenge and desensitization protocols;
• Immune system dysfunction, with immunodeficiency diagnostics;
• Skin disorders, such as eczema or chronic urticaria;
• Insect sting allergies, where immunotherapy can be life-saving.
What really distinguishes TOP Allergy, however, is its Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) Center—the only one of its kind in MiamiDade. Rather than just recommending avoidance, Dr. Bárcena’s team works with patients to build tolerance. OIT, paired with the gentle, needle-free option of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), empowers patients to reclaim a normal life.
INNOVATION WITH REASSURANCE: SAFETY AND SUPPORT FIRST
Still, innovation doesn’t mean shortcuts. At TOP Allergy’s OIT Center, safety is nonnegotiable:
• Each treatment plan starts with a thorough evaluation to ensure it’s tailored to the individual.
• The clinic offers 24/7 monitoring and direct communication— so patients and families know they’re never alone.
• For SLIT, the initial doses are administered in-office under supervision. Over time, patients shift to small daily doses at home, with annual follow-ups to track progress.
Dr. Maria A Barcena
This model—the deliberate pace, the constant support—is a reflection of Dr. Bárcena’s philosophy: healing is a journey, not a prescription.
A PILLAR IN THE COMMUNITY
Located within HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, the clinic sits in a uniquely convenient spot—easily accessible from Brickell, US-1, Key Biscayne, and Coconut Grove, making it an ideal destination for patients seeking comprehensive allergy care without the stress of difficult travel. Dr. Bárcena and her team make themselves genuinely reachable, guiding patients through everything from mild symptoms, like sneezing and itchy eyes, to life-altering conditions such as anaphylaxis and immunodeficiency.
The impact is palpable: patients consistently praise Dr. Bárcena’s warmth, her deep listening skills, and her dedication. As one reviewer shared, “She’s the only doctor who has taken the time to thoroughly go over all my allergies … Her nurse … is just as incredible—caring, attentive.”
WHY TOP ALLERGY FEELS DIFFERENT — AND WHAT’S NEXT
In a landscape crowded with high-volume practices, TOP Allergy stands out for its intentional intimacy. Dr. Bárcena has not built a high-throughput clinic—she’s built a relationship-driven practice where innovation and patient safety go hand in hand. Her Colombian-American journey, her world-class training, and her deeply human approach have created a space where patients don’t just find a doctor— they find a partner in managing their health.
Looking ahead, Dr. Bárcena’s vision for TOP Allergy continues to grow. She remains committed to expanding her practice and her patients’ possibilities. Through the Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) program, she is helping shift the paradigm from avoidance to immune tolerance. She’s not just treating allergies; she’s transforming lives.
At a time when chronic conditions can feel like life sentences, TOP Allergy offers something rare: hope, progress, and the promise that breathing easier is not just a dream—it can be your reality.
