12NOON, SATURDAY 6TH JULY 2019 From tiny acorns the mighty oak of CoCoMAD has grown. From an over enthusiastic school fete in 1997 to the marvellous festival of music, art, dance and science that is CoCoMAD 2019. There is no other festival quite like it. You don’t need a ticket, but remember CoCoMAD isn’t free, it’s paid for by donations from you, your neighbours and the businesses that you use. There are volunteers at the festival with donations buckets and if everyone donates £3 the festival is nearly paid for! CoCoMAD is run by Friends of Cotteridge Park (FoCP), a group of dedicated volunteers. If you want to know more about FoCP, or want to join the team, visit www.cotteridgepark.org.uk, join us on twitter @CotteridgePark #CoCoMad, and visit us on facebook.com/CotteridgePark

WELCOME!
CoCoMAD 2019’S THEME IS SCIENCE
We’re celebrating all things science - especially the moon landing! It’s 50 years since humans landed on the moon and 150 years since Dmitri Mendeleev announced his periodic table of elements. Two good excuses to mix up some of the usual CoCoMAD elements of music, art and dance with a sprinkling of moon dust (and science) to make something special.
Join us at our GRAND OPENING CEREMONY for a celebration of the first steps on the moon 50 years ago. This otherworldly opening ceremony will feature a professional cast and community volunteers in a liberating lunar celebration. Featuring acrobatics from CircusMASH and floats from Off Our Trolley Arts, come dance with us under the ‘moonlight’ of the main stage. 12noon, main field. 4
SCIENCE!
BrumSciComm
The CoCoMad scientists will be roaming the festival in their lab coats hoping to bump into you and do some science busking. They will have plenty of exciting hands-on demonstrations to entertain you and ignite your interest in science. You can also join them over in the science field where they will be running activities for all ages. There will be giant bubble blowing and badge making, storytelling through demonstrations, a fun quiz, and lots of audience participation.
Next to the swings, you’ll find Science for All, BrumSciComm and their friends from universities all over the region bringing the lab to you. During CoCoMAD The Barber Institute of Fine Arts are working with the Lapworth Museum of Geology to make artistic magic with rocks and fossils. More info about the scientists on our website. 5
HIGHLIGHTS
CircusMASH present Zero 50 years ago, humans first stood on the Moon... but what did they leave behind? Circus and theatre combine in an otherworldly outdoor spectacle. Performances will be roaming the festival from 12noon-4pm. Birmingham Youth Circus present Project 42 A cast of emerging circus artists under the guidance of CircusMASH. Inspired by the theme, BYC have created a cabaret-style production celebrating life, the universe and everything in it. In the circus field throughout the day, followed by workshop sessions.
CoCoLounge in the orchard, music, massage, yoga and relaxation surrounded by apple trees. CoCoAcoustica - a treasure trove of local musical talent. CoCoMAD Forest School - dens, hammocks and getting back to nature with the National Trust and Cotteridge Park Forest School.

Festivals make a mess Please do your bit to help reduce the environmental impact of your big day out in the park. You can help our volunteers by taking all of your rubbish and recycling home with you.
If you don’t have something to carry your rubbish in we have NEW CoCoMAD/Cotteridge Park tote bags! Get them from the FoCP information stall in the main field for a minimum donation of £4. Tote design by CoCoMAD illustrator Edie Woolf Printed by Get A Grip, Stirchleybased ethical screenprinters.

Reusable Pint Glasses
When you go to the bar you will be charged an extra £1 for your first drink and for that you get a great reusable CoCoMAD pint glass. That way you get a souvenir and we all cut down single-use plastics.
Festival Funding CoCoMAD is paid for by a mixture of sponsorship from local businesses, fees paid by traders and your donations. The festival costs about £22k (most of the work is done by volunteers). If every person (adults and children) put at least £3 in the buckets we can keep CoCoMAD going. That should raise about £15k - usually it’s only about £4k. The rest of the cost is covered by the lovely organisations that sponsor the programme (please take some time to read through their adverts later), and the fees from stallholders. 8

Regular Giving Forest school, picnics, carols, wassail, running groups, dance, play and sport. Cotteridge Park is a green oasis in a busy city. Since 1997, Cotteridge Park volunteers have been organising events and activities for the local community. All activities are FREE. We believe that no one should be excluded because they can’t afford to pay to join in. In the age of austerity the grants we used to get to pay for activities and events are harder to find. It costs nearly £20k a year to run all the activities, not including CoCoMAD. Could you donate a regular amount each month to keep these activities free? You can donate securely on our website. If you are a UK tax payer you can fill in a Gift Aid form. Your donation + Gift Aid will go to straight to Friends of Cotteridge Park. If you’d like to support us, visit our stall in the middle of the main field for more information about being a regular supporter / superstar. 9
CoCoLounge In the orchard you will find CoCoLounge; sit back and relax in our very own indooroutdoor space where an array of joy is brought to you on our tiny stage. This year CoCoLounge has kindly been furnished by THE THRIFTY GENT; the items are for sale and can be bought from the shop on the corner of Midland and Rowheath Roads. Enjoy the mellow sounds of our house band RAW SAX, or the myriad of diverse entertainment aimed at creating a sense of wellbeing. Work off your stress with our bicyclepowered sound-system in a space that uses more carbon dioxide than it creates. If you would like to take your place on our stage to share your unique talent, skills, tricks, jokes or your party piece, speak to our stage managers in the orchard.
Check CoCoLounge chalk boards for details & timings on the day.

CoCoAcoustica 1—7pm
Your chance to perform! Turn up on the day, book a slot and plug in and play. It’s your chance to get up and give it a go in front of an appreciative audience. There will be a mix of emerging and established talent where most of the acts can be accommodated with the emphasis on ACOUSTIC. Contact acoustica@cocomad.org.uk for info. Find us in the glade by the skate park.
Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Fund, made possible by National Lottery Players, Cotteridge Park is rediscovering its fascinating past. You can explore the history of the park on your computer at home, on your smart phone in the park, or via a paper map which you can pick up at the FoCP stall.

After many years of hard work Cotteridge Park is going to get back its community building. Between 1937 and 1997 Cotteridge Park had a club house and toilets. It was built as part of the Sons of Rest movement which was set up in Birmingham in the 1920s to provide leisure facilities for “industrial veterans. The new community building will provide toilets, hot drinks and somewhere for the community to come together to help reduce isolation, improve mental and physical health. Some of the suggestions for activities are coffee
14
mornings, knit and natter, and board games – not to mention somewhere to sit down after all those Active Parks sessions. Building work is due to start over the summer and we hope to be open by winter. Can you help? We need: interior designers, tea and cake makers, cleaners and people to help staff the building. If you want more information, have ideas about what you want see happen in the building or can offer to help visit cotteridgepark.org.uk or come along to the Cotteridge Park information stall in the main field.
