The small, but perfectly formed, festival in Cotteridge Park

Saturday 7 July th

CoCoMAD is run by Friends of Cotteridge Park (FoCP), a group of dedicated or foolish, volunteers.

From tiny acorns the mighty oak of CoCoMAD has grown. From an over enthusiastic school fete in 1997 to the marvellous festival of music, art and dance that is CoCoMAD 2018. There is no other festival quite like it. You don’t need a ticket, but remember CoCoMAD isn’t free, it’s paid for by donations from you, your neighbours and the businesses that you use. This year you can put cash in a bucket or text donations. If everyone donates £3, the festival is nearly paid for!

TEXT PARK20 + the amount you want to give to 70070 100% of your donation, plus any Gift Aid, will go to Friends of Cotteridge Park. Your standard text costs will apply.

If you want to know more about FoCP or want to join the CoCoMAD team, see our website www.cotteridgepark.org.uk, join us on twitter @CotteridgePark, #CoCoMad, and visit us on facebook.com/CotteridgePark.

DON’T DRIVE TO COCOMAD THERE IS NO PARKING

See page 7 for details bike parking, trains, buses & walking routes 3

Colour Me CoCoMAD Colour-in a CoCoMAD poster - or why not make your own? When it’s done, cut it out, stick it in your front window, take a picture, put it on facebook and/or twitter & #cotteridgepark or email the picture to info@cotteridgepark.org.uk - we’d love to see it!

On 7th July get your very own CoCoMAD temporary tattoos at the Cotteridge Park Info Stall, Main Field

Grand Opening Ceremony! The procession is dead, long live the procession! In the grand tradition of CoCoMAD not resting on its laurels, the procession from Cotteridge to the park has passed into the annals of history. This year we have a brand new opening ceremony, celebrating 250 years of modern circus.

Celebrating all things freakish and talented From 12pm in the Main Field – don’t miss it. Birmingham Opera will be using the power of voice to draw you to the Main Field. We love the unusual, the outsider, the different. There is no normal - except what you decide is normal for you!

In 1768 Philip Astley opened the first circus ring which led to displays of riding tricks, acrobatics, ‘comedic entertainments’ and the very first ringmaster. To celebrate this anniversary CircusMash are launching their new adventure – Cirqaville. Explore circus pop-ups and installations, no circus ring in sight. Workshops, performances and more than a few surprises; join the celebration #circus250. Look out for the painted animals! 5

CoCoMAD forest school – come and chill out in the hammocks and dens with National Trust and Oak Adventures. Selly Oak Nursery School is providing an Under 5’s area. We’re committed to being green! This year we are trying to eradicate single use plastics at CoCoMAD. We have lovely reusable pint glasses! They are £1 - and yours to keep. Available at the drinks stalls; Two Towers Brewery, Hogan’s Cider (our wonderful glass sponsors), and Cuffufle Cordials!

We understand that at family festivals, finances can be a barrier for many of us. CoCoMAD has challenged traders to have something for children to buy or a game to play on their stall for 20p - so that £1 pocket money can go much further at CoCoMAD. Look out for the 20p signs.

DON’T DRIVE TO COCOMAD THERE IS NO PARKING

BIG BIRMINGHAM (COLOU

The joy of a festival in your favourite local park is that you don’t need to drive to it – which is a good thing as there’s NO parking. CoCoMAD is a great festival for cyclists. There’ll be a supervised bike park and a variety of FREE cycling activities.

COLOUR REFERENCE

If you don’t cycle, Bournville Train Station is five minutes walk from the park and there are many buses that stop nearby. For info: journeyplanner.networkwestmidlands.com

FESTIVAL FUNDING It’s really important that as many of our activities as possible are FREE. We want you to enjoy the day without too much regret or pestering. CoCoMAD is paid for by a mixture of sponsorship from local businesses, fees paid by traders and your donations. If every person (adults & children) puts £3 or so in the bucket then we can continue to offer good value fun. Forest school & picnics, carols & wassail, running groups & dance classes, play, art, science and sport. Cotteridge Park has created a green oasis in a busy city. Since 1997 the Cotteridge Park volunteers have been organising events and activities for the local community. All of these activities are FREE because we believe that no one should be excluded because they can’t afford to pay to join in.

8

TEXT DONATE If you haven’t brought any money along for the buckets, you can donate by text. Text PARK20+ the amount you want to give to 70070. Standard text costs will apply.

REGULAR GIVING In the “age of austerity” the grants we used to get to pay for activities and events are getting harder to find. It costs nearly £20k a year to run all the activities (& that doesn’t include CoCoMAD). Could you donate a regular amount, each month, to keep these activities free for everyone? You can donate securely on our website. If you are a UK tax payer you can fill in a Gift Aid form. Your donation + Gift Aid will go to straight to Friends of Cotteridge Park. If you’d like to support us, visit our stall in the middle of the Main Field for more info about being a regular supporter / superstar.

The CoCoLounge This year CoCoLounge celebrates circus. We bring you “Freek/unique?”; a parade of individual talents from ordinary people, making the ordinary, extraordinary. Can you pull extraordinary faces? Can you juggle live chickens? Are you doublejointed or incredibly bendy? Can pull an egg from someone’s ear? Can you float in mid-air? Then take YOUR place on our tiny stage and share your unique skills, tricks, or appearance with the world. Speak to our stage managers on the day. Reflect or ruminate to the mellow sounds of RAW SAX or a myriad of entertainments aimed at inducing a sense of well-being and celebrating difference. Work off your stress with our bicyclepowered sound system in a space that uses more carbon dioxide than it creates. 10

CoCoAcoustica 1—7pm Your chance to perform! Turn up on the day, book a slot and plug in and play! There will be a mix of emerging and established talent. It’s your chance to get up and give it a go in front of an appreciative audience. Most line ups can be accommodated – but the emphasis is on ACOUSTIC Contact acoustica@cocomad.org. uk for more information. Find us in the Glade by the skate park.

BrumSciComm

The CoCoMad scientists will be roaming the festival in their lab coats hoping to bump into you and do some science busking. They will have plenty of exciting hands-on demonstrations to entertain you and ignite your interest in science. You can also join them over in the science tent where they will be running activities for all ages. There will also be giant bubble blowing and badge making. You can join some of the scientists in the CoCoLounge where they will be telling stories through demonstrations, a fun quiz, and maybe even some audience participation.

We want to make sure CoCoMad is as sustainable as possible. Our volunteers are teaming up with Birmingham Green Party to provide more recycling. Please do your bit - together we can keep the park tidy for everyone to enjoy!

Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, made possible by National Lottery players, Cotteridge Park is rediscovering it’s fascinating past. Are they meteorites, Edwardian garden decorations, dinosaur eggs?

The rocks are made of hard volcanic ash from a volcano in the area of Arenig in North Wales. Thanks to the geologists (volunteers and professionals) at the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Earth Heritage Trust for all their hard work.

No - the geologists all agree they are ice age deposits that arrived in the park 500,000 years ago. The rocks are spread around South Birmingham, but the park is proud to have the largest collection - thanks to the work of Edwardian amateur geologist Louis Barrow.

14

‘Arboretum’ is marked on early maps of the park, on either side of the main path from the car park. An arboretum is a collection of specimen trees chosen for their botanical interest. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Funding, Cotteridge Park’s arboretum is getting much needed TLC; spectacular new trees, vital remedial work on our existing trees, new flowers, park landscaping and new bird boxes.

History of the park The Heritage Lottery Funding is also enabling volunteers to gather documents, photos and maps to create an archive about the park. Documents can tell you some of the history of the park, but the best stories are told by the people who live here – some, for more than 80 years.

Did you know? In the past there was a large pavilion, a band stand, a small shelter, a toilet block and a club house for the bowls club. In 1937 a Sons of Rest was built to provide a space for retired members of the community. In those days it was only for men!

What we’ve learnt so far‌ There used to be lawn tennis courts, pitch and putt, crown green bowls and drinking fountains. Buildings have been in the park since the early 1900s!

History Tent at CoCoMAD Find out more about the glacial rocks and have a go at The Great Cotteridge Park Stone Puzzle. If you have stories to tell or old photos featuring the park bring them along to the tent, main field. history@cotteridgepark.org.uk

After many years of hard work by residents and Friends of Cotteridge Park volunteers, we’re near to getting back a community building. The Sons of Rest movement was set up in Birmingham in the 1920s to provide leisure facilities for ‘industrial veterans’.It was seen as important that communities had buildings where they were able to socialise.

As the members aged, our building fell into disrepair and was demolished by the council. There are plans for a 21st century version of the Sons of Rest building. A new community building in the park will provide toilets, hot drinks and somewhere for locals to come together; to reduce isolation, to improve mental & physical health.

By the end of the 1930s, 29 parks in the city had buildings - and there were 3,000 members.

Activity suggestions include coffee mornings, knit & natter, board games, and somewhere to sit after Active Parks sessions!

Cotteridge Park was part of the Sons of Rest movement, with a club house & toilets, 1937—1997.

Volunteers are needed for lots of different things from onsite to behind the scenes - can you help? Get involved

We believe that every child deserves a world class education that sparks their curiosity and love of learning. They described the school as a calm, welcoming place to be and the children are well behaved, polite and want to learn.
