The small, but perfectly formed, festival in Cotteridge Park
Saturday 1 July st
CoCoMAD is run by Friends of Cotteridge Park (FoCP), a group of dedicated or foolish, volunteers.
From tiny acorns the mighty oak of CoCoMAD has grown. From an over enthusiastic school fete in 1997 to the marvellous festival of music, art and dance that is CoCoMAD 2017. There is no other festival quite like it. You don’t need a ticket, but remember CoCoMAD isn’t free, it’s paid for by donations from you, your neighbours and the businesses that you use. This year you can put cash in a bucket or text donations. If everyone donates £3, the festival is nearly paid for!
TEXT PARK20 + the amount you want to give to 70070 100% of your donation, plus any Gift Aid, will go to Friends of Cotteridge Park. Your standard text costs will apply.
If you want to know more about FoCP or want to join the CoCoMAD team, see our website www.cotteridgepark.org.uk, join us on twitter @CotteridgePark, #CoCoMad, and visit us on facebook.com/CotteridgePark.
DON’T DRIVE TO COCOMAD THERE IS NO PARKING
See page 7 for details bike parking, trains, buses & walking routes 3
Procession & History of Cotteridge Park This year’s CoCoMAD procession is celebrating the history of the park – from its geological origins to today.
The boulders in the park are tens of thousands of years old – they arrived in the area on a glacier from Wales during the Pleistocene Epoch.
The park was created from 22 acres of land bought between 1905 and 1909, nestled between Franklin Road and the railway line to Kings Norton (completed in 1885). Around 1912, Louis Barrow, Chief Engineer at Cadburys and an amateur geologist, collected together the boulders, found as the park was laid out, and displayed them at the Breedon Rd entrance to the park. Advised by Professor Lapworth of Birmingham University, he installed a glazed map on a plinth, showing how they had travelled to the Midlands on the ice-sheet. 4
In its heyday the park had a pitch-and-putt course, grass and hard tennis courts, a bandstand, a pavilion, rose gardens and water fountains. Not forgetting the Sons of Rest building and public toilets. During World War 2 the park was dug up to create allotments and was home to barrage balloons and an air raid shelter. Cotteridge Park hosted the Cotteridge Carnival for many years. There was a funfair, fancy dress competition and a carnival parade. CoCoMAD aims to reclaim that heritage. So this year’s carnival floats will include; glaciers, Edwardian geologists, barrage balloons and the fashions of 1997!
Local schools and community organisations will be creating the carnival floats from shopping trolleys. But the procession needs your help too. Bring a Picnic & Build a Carnival Float Meet by the shed Sunday 24th June 11.30-3pm & Tuesday 27th June 5pm–7pm
Bring a picnic and have fun in the park. Lots of helpers of all ages are needed to create the floats and costumes. Join the Parade 11am meet at the Friends Meeting House, Watford Rd, Cotteridge Saturday 1st July, 12noon the procession sets off. Don’t forget you can decorate your bike and join the procession. Children must be accompanied by adults on the procession. 5
Celebrating Neurodiversity The MAD in CoCoMAD stands for Music, Art and Dance but the volunteers thought it was about time that we reclaimed the word as a way of showing how the park, volunteering and CoCoMAD are good for your mental health. Lots of the Friends of Cotteridge Park’s volunteers got involved with the park as part of their recovery from a mental illness, as a way to improve their mental health or as a place that accepts neurodiversity. There are many, many scientific studies that show that: Being outdoors is good for your brain and mental health Volunteering is good for your brain and mental health Being part of a community is good for your brain & mental health Music, dance and art are good for your brain and mental health.
6
CoCoMAD 2017 will: Find ways to ensure everyone attending feels comfortable and welcome at the festival Have lots of free activities that are good for your brain and your mental health Challenge the stigma around mental illness by being open about how many of us struggle with mental illness
Celebrate how we are all different and have our own individual, personal experiences - and that we are not alone, and it’s good to talk about mental health with each other. Look for the brain symbol for associated activities with this topic in mind at CoCoMAD.

Keeping Activities Free in Cotteridge Park The Friends of Cotteridge Park volunteers think it’s important the activities and events provided in the park should be free. No one should feel left out. In the past there have been grants to pay for these activities but austerity means there are fewer available. Can you afford to make a regular donation to help keep the activities in Cotteridge Park FREE? Your donation will NOT be used to pay for the maintenance of the park – that’s what you pay your Council Tax for. You can donate securely at www.cotteridgepark.org.uk
