A Note From Ernest Thompson “Life marches on,” you’ll hear Ethel say in On Golden Pond and the play itself is proof. When I wrote it, Jimmy Carter was president and now the first kid who played Billy on Broadway is older than the original Norman. There have been thousands of productions in the decades since, in more than 40 countries, in 30 languages. I refashioned my small story into a blockbuster, Academy Award-winning movie, a musical called Another Summer, a live TV special, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, and an all-African American Broadway revival led by James Earl Jones. And now we’re playing Vegas; what are the odds?

It never fails to please me to know that On Golden Pond is coming back to life, especially after the last two years when getting plays into theatres was such a challenge. I take pride in knowing that a new cast of actors, with their director and designers, will have explored the story and plumbed the currents beneath the placid-seeming waters. And I’m glad for audiences to experience or revisit what millions of others have, to laugh together at the human foibles these six characters manifest, to relate, perhaps, to what Norman and Ethel, Chelsea, Charlie, Bill and Billy are going through, to be moved—I guarantee that you will be—and even to be inspired to look at your own relationships and decide that experiencing and expressing love isn’t as hard as it seems.

And what a time it is do so.

We all have a special place we long to go home to, imagined or real, where life is simple and where hope, in spite of the odds stacked against it, can still take flight.

Dramaturgy Note Welcome to On Golden Pond, set in the beautiful state of Maine. This timeless play written by Ernest Thompson in 1979 first appeared at the Off-Off Broadway Hudson Guild Theatre in 1978. Produced in more than forty countries, in thirty different languages, On Golden Pond became a favorite for many and was even included in Best American Plays 1978-79. Released in 1981 On Golden Pond the film was packed with big name stars such as, Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Jane Fonda. Directed by Mark Rydell, the film became a huge success wining three Oscars, one BAFTA, three American Movie Awards, and three Golden Globes.

This American Classic continues to shine a light on the reality of aging, finding new hope and forgiveness. shows the best and worst of all of us. No family is perfect and behind the closed doors of this rustic cabin we will discover the intricate relationships between a daughter and her parents. Living through the characters, On Golden Pond shows that forgiveness can be possible if you amenable to mend bridges. While forgiveness can be hard to find sometimes our time on this earth is limited. Facing the reality of aging can be frightening but can also serve as a reminder that we are all human. Join us as the characters reflect on their lives, their love, and their regrets. Finding new hope in each other this family learns the true meaning of forgiveness. This deep dive into reality and provide a reminder to us all that as we grow, those around us grow as well. It truly is never too late to forgive, one just has to take the leap. Even if for a moment we hope you come to love this dysfunctional family and the hope they share.

Ernest Thompson Playwright Ernest Thompson has won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Writers Guild Award and a Broadway Drama Guild Award for Best Play. His work has been nominated for a Tony, an Emmy and a British Academy Award. His more than 35 plays have been seen in theatres around the world. The most enduring, ON GOLDEN POND, has been translated into 30 languages, Arabic the newest, and played in more than 40 countries on six continents.

Among other plays are THE WEST SIDE WALTZ (starring Katharine Hepburn and Dorothy Loudon), A SENSE OF HUMOR (Jack Lemmon and Estelle Parsons), AX OF LOVE, AMAZONS IN AUGUST, MURDERING MOTHER, WHITE PEOPLE CHRISTMAS, THE ELIXIR, and HUMAN BEINGS. His soon to be released anthology of 25 short plays contains the collections POLITICAL SUICIDE, THE PENIS RESPONDS, ANSWERS and VALENTINES FOR TWO, as well as THE ONE ABOUT THE GUY IN THE BAR and AMERICAN TERRORIST. In the theatre, Ernest has directed the world premieres of THE ELIXIR, THE PENIS RESPONDS, AX OF LOVE, ANOTHER SUMMER (the ON GOLDEN POND musical), and, in partnership with Rock the Vote, his darkly funny collection POLITICAL SUICIDE, which opened on Primary Night in New Hampshire 2012, and was followed by productions across the country.

Ernest began his acting career touring with Cyril Richard and Maureen O’Sullivan in THE PLEASURE OF HIS COMPANY. He has appeared on Broadway in SUMMER BRAVE (opposite Alexis Smith) and Off-Off in THE PENIS RESPONDS (with Richard Gilliland), THE VALENTINE FAIRY and ZIPLESS (both with Julie Haggerty). At the Ahmanson Theatre in LA, Ernest performed with Jean Stapleton and Charlotte Rae in THE TIME OF THE CUCKOO and has starred in other plays of his own, including THE ELIXIR, ON GOLDEN POND (at Pittman’s Freight Room, as Charlie the Mailman) and POLITICAL SUICIDE. In the ‘70s, Ernest had a long run on the soap opera SOMERSET and starred in two television series (SIERRA and WESTSIDE MEDICAL) and in two TV films across from Susan Sarandon (THE RIMERS OF ELDRITCH and THE LAST OF THE BELLES).

He acted in the feature films STAR 80 (directed by Bob Fosse) and NEXT STOP WONDERLAND and in two TV films Ernest wrote, THE LIES BOYS TELL and THE WEST SIDE WALTZ and starred in his independent films TIME AND CHARGES and HEAVENLY ANGLE. At his farm in rural New Hampshire, Ernest conducts his internationally-renowned Write On Golden Pond workshops for writers of all levels of experience and offers private coaching to actors and public speakers as well as one-on-one script analysis.

A prolific songwriter, Ernest has had the honor of working with legendary composers and singers, producing songs he’s used in his films and plays. With longtime collaborator Joe Deleault, Ernest created THE FATHER DAUGHTER DANCE, written with and performed

by Carly Simon, and the anthemic ON GOLDEN POND, composed with and featuring the award-winning Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster. Ernest has directed videos for his songs BRONTË BROOK, written with and performed by the remarkably talented Ray Porcell, and YOU ARE LOVED, with the extraordinary Justin Jaymes. Ernest’s music is available on iTunes and at Amazon and other online outlets.

One of Ernest’s newest songs, “Live Free or Die,” written with local legend Art Harriman and sung by television star John Davidson, another New Hampshire resident, will be heard as part of this year’s New Hampshire Boat Museum virtual tour and the music video featuring majestic scenery from the Seacoast to the mountains to the Lakes Region will be released soon.

In 2019, Ernest directed and—for the first time ever—starred as Norman Thayer, Jr. in a new production of ON GOLDEN POND at the charming Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Meredith, NH, close to where his iconic movie was shot. When the Covid interruption ends, Ernest will resurrect his play AX OF LOVE, recently workshopped before a sold-out NYC audience, and will resume conversations on his two newest plays, SOME PARTS MISSING and ASK/ANSWER. He’ll direct his long-awaited film sequel, HOME ON GOLDEN POND, currently out to several A-List stars, and his wildly timely, provocative and hilarious indy, PARALLEL AMERICA, in which he’ll costar with New Hampshire’s Gordon Clapp, John Davidson and Lisa Bostnar, is available to investors.

This is Sofu’s first production with Vegas Theatre Company. He is currently a theatre major at the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts and will be pursuing acting in college. Performing as Billy Ray has been an unforgettable experience for him and he is more than thrilled by the opportunity. You may have seen him most recently in Broadway In the Hood’s “The Color Purple” as Grady or LVA’s production of “Big Fish” as the Fisherman. Sofu would like to thank Daz Weller and the entire VTC team for welcoming him with open arms. He would also like to thank his family, friends, and teachers for being super supportive throughout his journey; he couldn’t have done it without them.

Erik Amblad is an actor, director, and acting coach. Acting credits on the VTC stage: Incognito, Constellations, Death of a Salesman, and Nurture. Other acting credits: Ghost[s] and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Majestic Repertory Theatre, and Elephant Man and Small Mouth Sounds with A Public Fit. Katrina Currow previously worked with the Vegas Theatre Company in “Witch” and “Still Dance The Stars”. She was in A Public Fit’s reading of “The Ghosts of Lote Bravo”. She workedon the Las Vegas strip in the show “Jubilee” and is currently a showgirl with the Vegas Golden Knights hockey team. She has performed in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and worked internationally in theater, television, and film. An alumna of the Atlantic Acting School and the Ailey School of Dance, she received her B.A. from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Gary is a veteran on stages throughout the west coast. Gary received a West Coast Regional Award for Best Actor in a comedy for Neil Simon’s, “The Good Doctor” and Best Actor in a Drama for “The Passion of Dracula”, Favourite roles include, King Henry II in “ The Lion in Winter”, Henry Higgins, “My Fair Lady, William Randolph Hearst in “ The Cat’s Meow” Sidney Bruhl in “Death Trap” and Yves Montand in “ La Mome Piaf . Gary most recently appeared in Public Fit’s “August Osage County and was the recipient of the Valley Award for Best Actor in “The Father” here at the Vegas Theatre Company as well as appeared in “The Christians”, “Frankenstein” and “Spinning into Butter” “This play has been on my bucket list for years when I got to a certain age “ and well I am there haha! Mario Peoples is an American actor originally from Detroit, Michigan.

His first acting role was portraying himself as a basketball master for the kid T.V. show Johnny Rockfit. He then went on to perform with Cirque Du Soleil‘s Zumanity for four years as an actor/dancer.

Since then Mario has starred in lead roles as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the play “The Mountain Top” by Katori Hall, Darren Lemon in Richard Greenberg’s “Take Me Out”, Captain Davenport in “A Soldier’s Play” by Charles Fuller, Rodney in Bess Wohl’s “Small Mouth Sounds”, as Sebastien in “Scraps” by Geraldine Inoa, in West Hollywood, California and most recent Jack Johnson in Marco Ramirez’s “The Royale”.

Mario hopes to inspire kids from his home neighborhood in Detroit’s inner city to follow their dreams and to be great in this world despite the odds and obstacles of their given circumstances.

Daz Weller is an actor and director who moved from Australia to Las Vegas in 2010 and is currently the Executive Artistic Director of Vegas Theatre Company. He graduated with a BA in Acting from the Queensland University of Technology in 1998. His U.S. directing credits include: Macbeth, Good Kids, The Crucible and The Human Comedy (Nevada Conservatory Theatre), The Thanksgiving Play, Sweat, Spinning into Butter, Seven Deadly Sins, The Father (Vegas Theatre Company), Gianni Schicchi (Vegas City Opera), The Ghosts of Gatsby, 27 and Cooperstown (Opera Las Vegas), Piano’s to the Death (The Space), The Piff the Magic Dragon Show (The Flamingo), The Small Space Festival (Emergency Arts), and Resident Director of Human Nature’s The Motown Show (The Venetian) and Spiegelworld’s Vegas Nocturne (The Cosmopolitan). Daz has also worked extensively as an actor throughout Las Vegas and with most of Australia’s major theatre companies.

Notable higlhlights include originating the role of the controversial Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in Ron Elisha’s Stainless Steel Rat in both the Sydney and London premieres and performing the role of Ray Dooley in Tony Award winning director Garry Hynes’ production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane at The Sydney Theatre Company. In 2019 he received the award for Best Director at the Vegas Valley Theatre Awards.

WHITNEY LEHN MELTZ Scenic Design

Whitney Lehn Meltz is a nonbinary Scenic Designer and artist of oddities.

Originally from Decatur IL, they relocated to the desert to pursue an MFA from the University ofNevada, Las Vegas. At UNLV Whitney designed the scenery for “Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet”, “bobrauschenbergamerica”, and “The Beaux’ Stratagem.” Other notable credits include “Witch” for the Vegas Theatre Company, “Shrek the Musical” for the Sierra Repertory Theatre, and “Mamma Mia” for the Timber Lake Playhouse. Two of Whitney’s recent designs have received recognition- “Shrek the Musical” won BroadwayWorld’s Sacramento Regional Award for Best Scenic Design of 2021, and “bobrauschenbergamerica” won First Place at SETC’s Graduate Scenic Design Competition 2022.

Jenn is an actor, musician, and composer.

She originated the role of the female Bank Manager in the 2nd National Tour of Once and has acted at numerous regional theatres, including the Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Paramount Theatre, the Ensemble Theatre Company, Mason Street Warehouse, and Bucks County Playhouse. She has also composed soundtracks for various theatrical productions. You can find her music on all streaming platforms. Jenn is currently earning her MFA in Acting at UNLV. ArianMarie Moye is from Olathe, Kansas and works in theater and film. She is currently a second-year MFA Costume Design student at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Her recent credits include Hair and Makeup Designer for “The Beaux’ Stratagem”, Costume Designer for “Ring Round the Moon” and “The Human Comedy” at the Nevada Conservatory Theater. She received her BFA in Theater and Studio Art at Tabor College in Hillsboro Kansas, where she was Costume Designer for “The Diaries of Adam and Eve” and “Antigone”. Arian would like to thank her Mom, Dad, and Ishmael for their constant love and support.

Jordan Hall is a first-year graduate student pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Lighting Design at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Originally from Fairview Heights, he received his Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. His recent design credits include, ”The Beaux Stratagem’” at the Nevada Conservatory Theatre, ”The Mountaintop” at the Hoogland Center for the Fine Arts, ”Theory of Relativity”, “Golden Boy” and “She Kills Monster” at Illinois College.

Lily E. Vetter is a Stage Manager and new to the world of Dramaturgy. From Sierra Vista AZ, Lily graduated with a B.A. in Theatre Technology and Design from Northern Arizona University. Finding a passion for Stage Management she joined the Master of Fine Arts; Stage Management program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Lily has worked as a Production Stage Manager on “Ring Round the Moon”, “The Human Comedy”, and “Orpheus in the Underworld” with Nevada Conservatory Theatre. She has also served as Production Dramaturg on “The Beaux’ Stratagem” and Assistant Dramaturg on “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” with Nevada Conservatory Theatre. Graduating this spring with her M.F.A.. Lily is excited to continue her journey at Texas Tech University in their Fine Arts Ph.D. program this fall.

M. Sohaa Smith is a recent Stage Management M.F.A graduate from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Although she is primarily a Stage Manager, she loves exploring the world of sound. She is thrilled to be making her debut at Vegas Theater Company by designing “On the Golden Pond.”

Nichole Killion is most often a stage manager for Vegas Theatre Company.

She has a BA in Stage Management, from Colorado State University. She has worked professionally as a stage manager in many fields of the performing arts including theatre, rock concerts, dance, fashion shows, and festivals. This is her debut props design for Vegas Theatre Company.
