15 year anniversary season!

SEASON 2018/2019

SEASON 2018/2019

Hello, and thank you for being here. Whether this is you’re first time at Cockroach, or you’ve followed us over the last 15 years - I welcome you. With our best-attended season-to-date at our backs, a newly engaged board of directors, a growing team of selfless volunteers, and palpable growth and energy for our Arts District and city, I couldn’t be more excited about the future of Cockroach Theatre Company and our fresh season of plays, curated by incoming Artistic Director, Daz Weller. I’m very proud of my four seasons as Artistic Director, bringing some of the most timely and sought after titles to our humble stage, and productions consistently recognized media-wide as “Best of the city.” My deepest thanks go to the immensely talented artists, designers, and tireless technicians and volunteers who were the heart behind each and every show, and to my wife Gina, for her patience, love, and support. Cockroach Theatre Company is beyond fortunate for the opportunity to name Daz Weller as its new Artistic Director. He brings real-world experience and a lofty resume to his new role that will surely raise our bar artistically. His work to date with Cockroach as an actor, director, and Associate AD speaks for itself. Most importantly, though, is his personal integrity and sense for collaboration that will serve the community well as our next AD. Now, as Executive Director, I look forward to working alongside the board, continuing to build a healthy organization, creating relationships with the community, and seeking more fulfilling ways to serve ALL our patrons. Moving forward, we’ll be asking you to engage with us in any degree that’s comfortable. My charge is to see that you and our community grow from that engagement. Let’s see where the next 15 years takes us. - Levi Fackrell, Executive Producer

Hi, I’m Darren but I go by the nickname Daz and I’m very proudly the new Artistic Director of Cockroach Theatre. Named for an insect with infamous survival abilities, this once itinerant company is now 15 years old (a lifetime in the chew-em-up-spit-em-out world of Vegas entertainment) and the name Cockroach seems a prophetic choice indeed. I arrive at an exciting time when our focus is shifting from survival alone to finding more ways to thrive. Alongside supporting our mission of producing new and neglected work, we are looking for opportunities to use our little black box as a small but mighty engine to generate work and ideas that have a life beyond our four walls: finding more ways to reach our community and offer them the uniquely profound experience of attending great professional theatre. This season starts with one of the best one man shows I have ever read, Every Brilliant Thing, a play that adresses depression but is surprisingly full of heart and humor. It could very well be a show that tours Nevada sharing it’s warmth and community spirit in tiny towns and theatres, school halls and cafeterias across the state. Then we have two plays, a musical and a new adaptation of a classic that receive their US premieres right here at CTC and will surely find other houses across the country to produce them. As well as our ever-expanding array of classes for adults, our season of plays and workshops through Cockroach Kids and our partnerships with other theatre companies, community organisations and businesses, we have some real opportunities to reach further into our community this year. Join us! We’d love to hear about ways you would like to engage with our theatre. Email me and I promise to get back to you: daz@cockroachtheatre.com And if you can take 5 nights or afternoons out of your year and spend them in a dark room engaging with stories that connect us, then please consider subscribing to our season. It’s one of the primary ways we have to gaurantee we meet our promises in the coming year. And we promise, you won’t be disappointed. When life is busy, times are tough and I begin to question why I choose to spend most of my waking hours dedicated to making theatre, I remeber this: Good theatre has the unique ability to restore our spirits and remind us of what we share in common with our neighbours, our friends, our adversaries. In a world that is constantly telling us to choose a side, live theatre, the ancient act of communing in a room to share ideas that connect us, seems not just relevant but necessary. In a way, it’s an act of survival. - Daz Weller, Artistic Director

EVERY BRILLIANT THING

BY DUNCAN MACMILLIAN WITH JOHNNY DONAHOE

DIRECTED BY JANE WALSH WITH MARCUS WEISS Ice cream, rollercoasters, the smell of old books - as a mother battles chronic depression, a child creates a list of everything that makes life worth living. As time passes, the list grows and what began as a naive attempt to deal with tragedy, becomes an epic chronicle of life’s small joys. Staged in-the-round, this touching, funny and intimate play charts the lengths we will go for those we love. We love Marcus. We love Jane. We love this play. A truly theatricical experience, Every Brilliant Thing blew us away when we read it and knowing we had our friends Marcus Weiss (O, Le Reve) an artist at the peak of his powers, and Jane Walsh, one of the biggest hearts in Vegas theatre, ready and willing to take part, we programmed it immediately.

THE DOG/ THE CAT

THE DOG BY BRENDAN COWELL THE CAT BY LALLY KATZ

Need a laugh? Well look no further. There is a little truth for everyone who has ever been in love in The Dog/The Cat. If only Alex and Albert could see their divorce through the eyes of their rap-star cat. And it takes Miracle to show Ben and Marcus that, despite their different takes on love, their friendship -- and Jerry Seinfeld -- are worth saving. Brendan Cowell and Lally Katz’s romantic comedy double bill is bittersweet but also easy to swallow between laughs. Having entertained sold-out audiences at Belvoir St Theatre in Sydney, Australia, Cockroach brings these personalities and their pets back to life for Las Vegas in brand new versions of the plays, specially for us. Come celebrate the triumphs that inevitably come with the hardships of serious relationships, whether they be with people, dogs in a park, or your cat.

ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST BY DARIO FO

in a new adaptation by JAMES SANDLIN DIRECTED BY ALLEGRA LIBONATI WITH BRETT ALTERS

ASHBY

A man has fallen to his death from a police station window. Did he jump or was he pushed? The cops want a cover up, but first they have to contend with an unlikely detective – a certified lunatic with a knack for impersonation. We are thrilled to welcome Allegra Libonati (American Repertory Theatre) to helm this glorious battle of the individual against the establishment in a hilariously biting brand-new adaptation by James Sandlin Ashby. Joing forces with one of Vegas’ favorite fools Brett Alters (LeReve, The Piff Show) this is certainly a show not to be missed.

SWEAT

BY LYNN NOTTAGE

DIRECTED BY DAZ WELLER The American Dream has its back up against the wall in this Pulitzer Prize-winning drama. In Reading, PA, there’s talk of union lock-outs, massive lay-offs, and jobs going overseas. As rumors quickly become reality, a group of life-long friends gather at their local bar to joke and blow off steam while struggling to stand together as everything else falls apart. Inspired by true stories, Sweat is a compelling portrait of pride and survival in America. Direct from Broadway we are proud to bring this powerful play to Vegas and join with some of the best regional theatres in the country to produce “Sweat” in our 2018/2019 season. “Writing at the peak of her powers,” Lynn Nottage (Ruined) has crafted “a superb, vital contribution to contemporary drama that could not be more timely” (The New York Times).
