Well, we lost another Daytona Beach brother to cancer! David Watson!!! Dave had been my friend since somewhere around 2008. He was a good brother to me and 100’s more. He. like so many fought that frigging monster so hard, but in the end it seems like it overcomes even the strongest of people. David will be geatly missed from Edgewater to Ormond, and every place in between. If you ever met him, you know what I mean. CHOPS Magazine

I believe it was 1996 when my lifelong riding bro and i struck out on a couple week trip to go to Laconia from Baltimore .We were going to go up through Pennsylvania, Finger Lakes New York, White mountains of Vermont then finally New Hampshire and Laconia (roughly 11-1300 miles). After a few days of riding we stumbled upon the Americade rally in upstate New York, It had been pouring for a day and hard riding so we were ready for a rest at what seemed like a Goldwing rally. Marios manifold was leaking like crazy and was sucking rain in and really running like piss. By this time it was like 9pm and every hotel was booked. Finally i found an Indian guy i guess i woke up to give me a room after beating on the window. In went the bikes through the door and we pulled the mattress off and i got the box spring and Mario got the mattress. We got the manifold fixed in the morning and ran from the Goldwing rally north into the white mountains. I knew a secret spot deep in the mountains were we would camp a day or two, I had been shown the spot yrs before and was excited to try to find it again deep in this beautiful forest. Somehow i found the ole’ store i remembered and we stocked up for the night. Our leather saddlebags were full with gear and our forks had our tent and sleeping bags so space was tough. But we got a six pack (which i put bewteen my legs) a frozen pizza, which i was convinced i would cook on my multi fuel back packing stove (which consisted of a 3” burner), and a supply of sweatleaf, which i was already hitting hard. So we were set! Well i found the fire road eventually, and it was hammered with rain and just beyond muddy. I obviously struck on into the adventure deeper. We raced, slid, dropped and assaulted these roads in hysterics for about an hour just echoing our pipes through the forest. Then Chops 20
i reconized the road to were i wanted to go from memory. I screamed up the hill in excitement revving my bike as i slid to the top and what did i ride into? The middle of ? 60 hippies sitting having a peace prayer circle! They were mortified and terrified a second later here comes Mario ripping up through the mud, Their reaction was like, “Finaly after an hour of hearing these assholes they found us!” I will never forget the look on there faces as i shouted sorry. We proceeded to go back down the hill some and make camp. After being shot in the eye with fuel from my cook stove we burned some pizza drank some brews and smoked a few; continuing to belly laugh about how long we were ripping our pipes through those woods and the hippies were having a peace prayer circle. The next morning we rode into town to clean off our bikes. I actually was worried about smoking my front cylinder it was just a solid cake of mud. At the local car wash a guy asked were the hell did you come from? I said a hippie party in the forest. There were many other adventures on that trip, including sleeping in a burned down hotel, Mario losing a clutch doing a burnout up the hill from Weirs Beach, numerous passengers, almost sliding off the gravel cliff on Mount Washington, a stripper staying in my room i met, and literally riding for 500 miles home in the rain, pounding so hard it was so insane and truly unbearable at 75 mph, but that isn’t all, I actually fail asleep riding 75mph in that rain when I was only 50 miles from home!!! I woke up and didn’t swere or anything, and very lucky that I didnt crash. After a full night of riding I passed out at home on my kitchen floor. Sounds like a good trip to me. ~ Ray Ray Chops

Mike Dyabelko Got a little story about me and Stick around the late 70’s. We left the clubhouse in Oakland and headed to the Sacramento area to visit an old friend from back in the Philly days, about 85 miles. Got to Rich’s house and started smokin and jokin and tellin lies. The day turned into night and we were snot slingin drunk and stoned off our asses out in Rich’s garage. Soon Rich’s ole lady came out and threw a fit. “Where’s Stick?” she hollored. “He’s out by the tree throwin up” says I. Next thing I know we are collecting our shit and leaving, she threw us out! We fired up our putts and headed back to Oakland. Here’s where the story gets interesting. Stick is up front and I miss the ramp to the freeway. I’m on the overpass turning around and my front wheel catches some gravel, so down I go. I start to pick the bike up and my feet hit that gravel, so down I go with the bike on top of me. It was at that time I passed out! I wake up to the flashing lights of a meat wagon. The guys help me up and I put the bike on it’s kickstand. I asked if they knew of a place I could camp and they had me follow them. It’s all just a blur when I arrived at some field and looked for a level place to park and sleep. Early morning comes and I look up to see two CHP officers looking back. The one says,”Are you the asshole they picked up off Chops 24
the street last night”? I answered with,”Unless there was more than one, that would be me”! “You can’t stay here”, says the one. The other asked if I knew were I was. As I looked over , I found myself at the end of the runway of a county airport! The cops let me collect my shit and I was on my way back to the clubhouse in Oakland. As I was riding on the freeway I wondered why Stick never came back to look for me. I got to the clubhouse and Stick wasn’t there yet. When he showed up he told me why. He said he had to stop in the bushes of the median of the freeway to puke some more. He then passed out and slept there all night! I actually rode past him on my way back to Oakland! Chops 25

An Analogy Things at the bike club had deteriated, our long term President had lost his power and control. And those in the club had voted him out. And by those, I mean the disloyal, backstabbing and greedy bunch that I never considered brothers. Donny loaded up what little he needed on the back fender of the bone stock Sportster he rode the wheels off, since I’d known him, turned in his well faded cutoff vest, and left the clubhouse, deliberately running over the grass in front of the clubhouse, and kicking over the new sign posted by the other members, KEEP OFF THE GRASS. His straight unmuffled pipes echoing down the road, sent a angry insult to those who had turned on him. I stood around for awhile, maybe 5 minutes and observed the rest of the club, opening beers and running their mouths with just more lies. It wasn’t for me. I knew better. I left my vest on the porch, and fired my own old Sportster up and took off like a loaded B29. I opened it wide and caught Donny a few miles down the road, and we blasted on, a few minutes later, a couple more of the real brothers came up behind us, and joined in the small pack. I noticed no one was wearing their cuts. We were off, without a destination, following Donny, like always, towards a better future. ~ By Ken Bradway

Ok story time!!! I was 21 years old & broke as a joke! Rode my 77 sporty to work all one year in Baltimore. Of course the generator was bad and I had to push start it every morning at 630 am and wake up every neighbor for a block so I could get my gloves on. One weekend, Mario and I got the bikes running & headed to one of the early toy runs in Baltimore, these runs were huge! Like 25,000 people would show up back then. Well we were walking around the massive field partying after the run and I noticed under my bike there was a huge puddle of oil. “Shit, f@#k, dammit“!!! I lay down and look under and my drain plug is totally fkn gone. I am screwed as there are no vendors except Chops 44
food ones and there were no cars or trucks around. I think, “All I have is the bandana that I tied around my oil cap to stop that leak, and some electric tape, a book of matches I kept around to gap my points, screwdriver a lighter and some weed. I looked around and found a 1/2” stick snapped it into and wrapped tape around it then screwed that bitch in! So off I went for beer and oil. I asked a ton of people and found only one quart of oil. Poured it in and continued to party! I got it running later and off we went. I added more oil and that bitch didn’t leak for a week until I fixed it . True story!!! ~ Ray Ray

Sorry not old pic but old bike built by Speedy of Bandidos out of Arkansas in 70s or 80s that I bought before and restored right after his and his fiance’s death in motorcycle accident in 2012. As for a story. I graduated at 23 years old from AMI harley program. Could never put aside money for harley till divorced first wife in early 90s. Bought ironhead sportster from Road Dog Cycles in Denair California while living in Rochester NY. Took my vacation flew to San Fran. cousin picked me up took me there. Waited two days cuz ironhead kept puking oil. planned ride to Austin Texas visit lady friend then back to New York. it was April. thought it be warm. Road Dog cycles let me trade for 86 883 sportster, my first harley. shivered all way to Barstow, CA. Noticed headlight fell out. Found shop in town. fixed, rode across desert with other guy on harley for while I met on road. Snowing in desert saw airplane graveyard. finally Arizona was warmer. Met guy with shovel at truck stop. bike wouldn’t start. help him fix gave him some money get home. he gave me gloves. got to Austin realized handlebars and risers no longer attached to bike cuz riser bolts fell out. pulled over careful. used tie down straps hold handlebars on bike. next day fixed. had good time for few weeks. headed New York freezing. battery died in Memphis Tennessee at river. took bus buy new battery and back. stayed at Branson casino. rode home freezing in snow flurries. great trip for real smiles. BIKE NIGHTS IN THE AREA Bike Night at OB’s is on Wednesday Nights!!! They always have a great band, and serving up cold drinks and good food. Of course, they offer a nice portioned plate dinner for a donation ONLY! Most people drop in $5, and each time I have had it, it was tops! So, try OB’s Bike Night this week, and have FUN!!! Bike Nights on Main St. is also EVERY Wednesday evening!!! It starts around 7PM, and goes until the last person leaves.
