Cochise @ (386) 690-6270 or cochisechops@yahoo.com All he ever really wanted, in the latter years of his life, was to be recognized by his peers, those he was closes to, those who he went to church with AS A BIKER!!! For some reason, he felt that “those real bikers” looked down on him. I told him he was crazy, especially after he named a couple of them. I told him, as far as I was concerned (because of my definition of what a biker is, that you ACTUALLY RIDE your motorcycle outside your zip code) he was more of a true biker than them. “Dude, you ride your bike, even though you are fighting cancer, on dialysis 3 times a week and fighting with circulatory problems in your legs!!! Who cares what those arm chair motorcycle owners say? You ARE a biker”, says me! He would mention his uncle who was a 1%er, like that would help his cause, but you and I know better. He thought because he was never a 1%er, or was a 1%er or would have never made a 1%er, that he could at least get some credit because of his uncle Wilson. JW Springer, my man, my brother, a man who knew more about what real brotherhood was about than any other individual I have meet in the last 30 years, both inside the church house and outside. He knew what it was like to be there for his brothers, as witnessed by me many, many times, from needing to borrow his truck to deliver magazines or someone to meet me in Georgia or North Florida when I was pulling a trailer back down here from KY. He was ALWAYS there and not just for me, but anyone who asked a favor of him. JW Springer was a down to earth real deal biker who exemplified true, unquestionable brotherhood!!! JW’s testimony of how he got clean off of an 18 year herion addiction starts on page 12, if you don’t want to know how or don’t believe in Jesus, just skip it. You won’t offend either of us!!! Don’t forget OB’s Pan, Shovel, Antique Bike Show on the 15h, and Happy 66th Birthday to me on the 21st!!! Be Blessed!!! Chops 7

James “JW” Springer (As Written By Himself) R.I.P. Brother, I Love You!!! Remember that Hank Jr. song “Super Man”? Well, that’s sorta how my testimony starts, “Daddy died when I was three, Momma never rocked me on her knee.” (I’ll get more into my mom’s story a little later.) When I was in my childhood it was full of negative influences. Other children were learning to spell or play games, not me. My first learning experience was when I was four years old, and my older brother was teaching me how to “huff gasoline” from my stepdads truck. My uncles were a couple of hippies and with another one being a 1%er biker out of Indiana. He was my father figure, I guess. So in my family, drugs and alcohol and “Raisin’ Hell” was the norm. I remember when I was in the 1st grade my mom and stepdad going to Vegas and leaving my two hippy uncles to baby sit me and mytwo brothers. They got high an thought it would be funny to give us LSD 2.5 on a sugar cube. This happened on a regular bases. All through my childhood, and even my adulthood I have dealt with mental problems and addictions. It seemed all of my life I have been in and out of rehabs, counseling, shrinks, on psych meds because of this, but that is not my testimony. My testimony is about heroin and forgiveness. My mother was a prostitute, strung out on heroin. When I was 7 or 8 years old her and my stepdad divorced, and she got real wild. I would watch her shoot up and sell herself all the time. So I learned to hate her. I was probably the happiest kid in the world when she abandoned us. I was 9 years old and already a man. Growing up I stayed at my grandmas and an uncles off and on while growing up. Anyway, the point is I hated my mom and believed if she ever came back I would have killed her. The forgiveness for her would not start till I was in my 30’s, when I found Jesus. See, I too became addicted to heroin at the age of 18, and stayed addicted until I was 36 years old. I was strung out bad for about 20 years, give or take. In 1998 on Christmas, my brother, his girl and my friend and me were doing “speedballs” (shooting heroin and coke mixed) and drinking Johnny Walker when my friend Tio ODed and died that night. My brother and his girl were on probation so it was up to me to deal with the police. I swore off heroin then and there, but by the time they got the body out an released me, I was “jonesing” so bad that the first place I went was to the dope house. I really wanted to get off heroin cause I felt I was next, to die. I knew the only way I could get help was through the legal system. So I devised a plan. I would go on a shoplifting spree till I got caught. Let me tell you, it’s harder to caught than you might think. It took 3 months of filling a grocery cart overflowing with expensive meat and booze and walking out the front door, not even trying to conceal it, before anyone even said anything. Everyday I did this. Chops 12
Steal and trade for heroin. THREE MONTHS DUDE!!! Finally, thank God, I got arrested. The judge wanted to release me. I told him why I did it and if he let me go, I would continue. So he sentenced me to stay in Pima County jail till a spot at a halfway house opened, where I could get the help I needed. While in jail, my cellie (top bunk) Able would try to get me to attend church with him every week, and I would decline. On May 5th 1999 a van from the 1/2 way house was supposed to pick me up as I waited outside the jail. After about 5 minutes, when they didn’t show up, I went to the Home Depot and robbed them, so I could go buy me a speedball. I was so ashamed. I had almost 2 months clean in jail and screwed it up. I knew “I didn’t want to die” and that’s what I told my probation officer when I turned myself in, “Put me in prison or back in jail, I DON’T WANT TO DIE!” He told me, “Don’t ever hide anything from me”, and gave me a break and drove to the Hedric Halfway House. I got work real quick spreading gravel in a yard and was doing great. About a month later I came home from work and found I’d been moved to the bottom bunk. Turns out Able, the kid on the top bunk from my jail stay, was my new bunkie. He was a carpenter and got me a job working with him as a laborer. Him and some other kids in the halfway house asked me to church every week. Finally, week I told Able, “God deals with people differently and when He is ready for me, He’ll say ‘JW, you round headed dummy, go to church’ and hit me in the head with a 2X4”. Little did I know, “God thinks bigger than that”! I was at work the next day hanging trusses. I would hand up an end to a guy on each eave of the house and flip the middle up to a guy on the peak. The truss flipped all the way over like a pendulum, thus hitting me on the head and knocking me off the slab. So I went to church with Able. I could feel the Holy Spirit calling me and before I knew it I was getting “saved”. I told Able and the other guys I was just going to pick up chicks. A few weeks later they asked me where these girls I’m to pick up? My reply was, “When God’s ready He’ll pick me one from the flock.” That night when we got back from church, I got a call from a girl in another rehab, named “Jill”. We got married a year later and been together 16 years. I truly believe Jesus picked her out for me, amen! So I am clean off the heroin for about 2 years and then decided to backslide, no not on herion, but Crack Cocaine. I started selling it and smoking it running around all “cracked” out of my mind, high and carrying a gun cause I was always so paranoind. One day in 2002 of May, again I got on my knees and prayed for the Lord to get me off this dope, even if you got to lock me back up to do it. The next day I got popped and spent the next 3 years in prison, with Jesus by myside, looking after me. I was released in 2005 and I have slipped up a couple of times, but I thank God for the His second chances, Amen! Chops 13

Weighting Heavy On My Mind!!! I will say it one more time, many people are ignoring people who truly love them so that they can work hard at making people like them!!! And, by doing so we miss out on some special special moments in life! BTW, I’ve done this many times in my life and regret it. Especially with my children! And may I add, children today, do their parents the same way. I see momma’s and daddy’s trying so hard to be a part of their kid’s lives, and the kids, just ignore ALL that love waiting for them. I also did my momma this way, and the moment she passed away, I regretted it, GREATLY!!! Harry Chapin said it best in a song his wife wrote about him and his relationship with his own son: My child arrived just the other day He came to the world in the usual way But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay He learned to walk while I was away And he was talking ‘fore I knew it, and as he grew He’d say “I’m gonna be like you, dad” “You know I’m gonna be like you” And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon. Little boy blue and the man in the moon. “When you coming home, dad?” “I don’t know when” But we’ll get together then. You know we’ll have a good time then. My son turned ten just the other day He said, thanks for the ball, dad, come on let’s play Can you teach me to throw, I said, not today I got a lot to do, he said, that’s okay And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed It said, I’m gonna be like him, yeah You know I’m gonna be like him And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon. Little boy blue and the man in the moon. Chops 22
“When you coming home, dad?” “I don’t know when” But we’ll get together then. You know we’ll have a good time then. Well, he came from college just the other day So much like a man I just had to say Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while? He shook his head, and he said with a smile What I’d really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys See you later, can I have them please? And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon. Little boy blue and the man in the moon. “When you coming home, son?” “I don’t know when” But we’ll get together then, dad. You know we’ll have a good time then. I’ve long since retired and my son’s moved away I called him up just the other day I said, I’d like to see you if you don’t mind He said, I’d love to, dad, if I could find the time You see, my new job’s a hassle, and the kids have the flu But it’s sure nice talking to you, dad It’s been sure nice talking to you. And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me He’d grown up just like me My boy was just like me And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon Little boy blue and the man in the moon “When you coming home, son?” “I don’t know when” But we’ll get together then, dad We’re gonna have a good time then. This song was just another tune back when my children were small, and when they became teenagers, I got so busy with my job, pastoring a couple humdred people, I just ignored what this song was saying and them. Those who loved me the most, that loved me unconditionally, and for what, to please some people who saw me as a “hirling”. Today this song drives a cold, hard wooden stake of emotions deep into me heart. I CANNOT listen to this sone without weeping, especially the part where the son asks his dad to play ball with him. You know how many times I too have said those words, “Not Now Son, Later”? Oh God, I so much regret those words! I believe this is why I try so hard to spend time with my grandchildren, because I too blew it with my 4 children. Mandi, Boo Boo, Zach and Em, I’m sorry and please forgive me! Dad

How many of you knew that the Band was called The Band, because they were Bob Dylans band at first? (This is what I can find on Wikipedia, so I’m thinking it is true!!!) More Facts: What does the song The Weight by The Band mean? Inspired by Buñuel but populated by Arkansans, the song is most simply about the burdens we all carry. The “weight” is the load that we shoulder when we take on responsibility or when we try to do good. (Luis Buñuel. ... Luis Buñuel, (born February 22, 1900, Calanda, Spain—died July 29, 1983, Mexico City, Mexico), Spanish filmmaker who was a leading figure in Surrealism, the tenets of which suffused both his life and his work. Born: February 22, 1900, Calanda Film: Carmen, An Andalusian Dog, Age of Gold, ... Profession: Film director, Filmmaker Died: July 29, 1983, Mexico City) Who wrote the weight by the Band? Robbie Robertson The Band’s album The Band was released in September 1969, and became a critical and commercial success. The album received almost universal critical praise, peaked at #9 on the US pop charts, and stayed in the Top 40 for 24 weeks. The Band works as a loose concept album of Americana themes, and was instrumental in the creation of the Americana Music genre. It was included in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2009. The song with the strongest cultural impact on The Band album was “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”. The song tells a fictional story of a Confederate citizen’s experiences at the end of the American Civil War, and features actual historical events worked into the song to create a larger American mythos. Although the Band’s original version was not released as a single, a cover version by Joan Baez went to #3 on the charts in 1971 and helped to popularize the song. Several other tracks from The Band received significant radio airplay, and would become staples in the group’s concert appearances. “Up on Cripple Creek” peaked at #25 in late 1969 in the United States, and would be their only Top 30 hit there. GIRLS OF YORE: ROBERTA PEDON If you have been in the biking scene at all over the last 50 years, and even the last 10 years, you’ve seen the famous pics of Roberta Pedon. You may not have known her name, but you’ve seen the pictures. Here is something I found on this mystery woman that many men, including some of you may have fantasized about for a long, long time: One of the most iconic pinup girls of the Seventies, Roberta Pedon, is lost to the mists of time and mystery, friends. Which makes her story –– or what’s actually known of it –– all the more interesting, we think. In this current rotation of ‘retro-cool,’ where the Seventies and Eighties are the current hipster darlings, Roberta is being discovered and rediscovered all over again. And with good reason. Well, two good reasons, to say the least, dig? But what makes Roberta so captivating, besides the obvious, is the complete mystery and speculation surrounding her. And please forgive –– we’re going to be using alot of “probably” and “most likely” and “apparently” and “allegedly” from here on out… Probably born in Ohio (or was it California?) in 1954, Roberta –– not her real name –– grew up in some sort of Argentinian or Latvian or Italian or Portugese Jewish household. And from what we’ve heard, her mother was an overbearing woman, so Roberta claimed her grandmother as the one adult in her childhood she was most fond of. We mention this because her mother, most likely, had much influence over the bad decisions she’d make the rest of her life… But let’s get on with it: at some point in the early Seventies, Roberta moved to San Francisco and claimed that she’d allegedly graduated from a Bay Area high school. What we do know is that she was living in the city Chops 44
with some lucky dude in ’72 before a brief few months in Washington state, followed by a move to Venice Beach by early ’73. It was at some point in 1973 that she began using the name “Roberta Pedon” almost exclusively once she started modeling for an early Southern California “valley” outfit, dubiously named “American Art Enterprises.” For roughly two years, Roberta adopted the character of a free-spirited hippie for most all of her photoshoots and the few bits of film work she produced. The embodiment of the quintessential fantasy hippy chick –– the hot girl with the easy smile, the near-comic book proportions, the headband, the bellbottoms and lack of hairy armpits –– worked well for her (not to mention all the guys in the suburbs who wanted the ‘ol lady riding on the king-and-queen and the Mrs. Robinson model of Anne Bancroft all wrapped up in the same woman). And in those few short years, she’d develop a voracious appetite for drugs, sex and men –– none of which she handled with much ease or success. By ’75, she’d been hospitalized for an overdose, which led to her being let go from the rolls of A.A.E., arrested in San Francisco for prostitution and that’s where the trail starts to run cold. “Melody O’Hare,” “Roberta Weaver,” “Robin,” “Mooschi,” “Sam,” “Robbie” and just plain “Roberta” were all names she worked under in magazines ranging from outlaw biker titles to fetish books and more than a few adult monthlies, as well as a few obscure films. While Roberta tried to break into Hollywood as a legitimate actress, the closest she got was a few alleged affairs with none other than sexaholic “Hogan’s Heroes” wonderboy, Bob Crane and Moses-turned-damned filthy ape-hater/lover, Chuck Heston. But not much is known of her since the mid-Seventies. It’s been claimed that Roberta had been seen as late as ’79, when she was picked up on her way to a shoot of some ill repute in Southern California, but legend has it that she was just a shadow of her former, unbelievably stacked self: drugs and homelessness had apparently taken their toll on the hippie vixen. Chops 45
Rumors of Roberta’s death may have also been exaggerated: some claim she died in Oakland, CA in ’82, some say it was ’84 or ’85. Others claim that she’s not dead at all, rather she was involved in a bank robbery, changed her name once again and is still on the lamb. Still others state a specific date of July 30, 1982 as the day of her reckoning. What we absolutely DO know is that we love Roberta Pedon. We hope she’s still out there somewhere, reading this and laughing all the way to some Swiss bank where she’ll take out a few fat/phat stacks from her secret account, go pay for the bike Nicke‘s finishing up for her and ride it like a Mann painting off to the coast of Croatia where we’ll meet her in some underground opium den and listen to Serge Gainsbourg records and drink Moroccan tea. Here some more speculations about Roberta: Jonathan says: Roberta Pedon was born Rosma Laila Grantoviskis on May 2, 1954, in Ohio. The daughter of Jewish Latvian refugees, Pedon spoke fluent Portuguese and graduated from high school in 1972. She moved to San Francisco before eventually settling in Venice, California to pursue a modeling career. Pedon was a popular and much beloved big-bust nude model of the early 1970s. Pedon retired from acting and modeling in the mid 1970s. She died at the tragically young age of 28 from liver disease on July 30, 1982, in Alameda County, California. Uncouth Reflections says: [...] Pedon, with her signature awkward smile and early death, sums up the innocence and darkness of the 70s hippie California that spanned the Summer of Love to the Manson murders. *blah blah blah more pretentious [...] Jimmy says: The pic of her on the Panhead Chopper has been one of my favorites for years. The epitome of a Chopper and a woman!!! Mr. Bill says: God Himself must have gazed in complete appreciation of her beauty created by his masterfully loving hands! Chops 46

Just Stuff!!! Many accidents happen when a rider is distracted just long enough NOT to see the car stopping in front of them, and BAM, you rear end the stopped or slowing vehicle. Maybe the rider was looking down at his gauges or “dummy” lights to see if his turn signal is on or off, or looking for his dimmer button, or trying to find the horn button. It takes only a second to take your eyes off the road in front of you to, smack a truck or not see that left hand turning car right in front of you, and then it’s to late. Don’t tailgate (like I do), and leave plenty of room between you and the person you’re following (even motorcycles when on a ride), but back off more when you need to check your buttons, gas gauge or lights. I have also shared with others about when sitting at a stop light, about keeping your bike in gear until another car pulls in behind you, and becomes a blocker for any vehicle that may be coming to fast to stop, from hitting you. Always keep checking your rear view mirrors while sitting still, and keep your bike in gear, that way if you see a fast approaching car coming or hear squalling tires, you can pull forward and get out of the way. After you have a blocker, put in neutral. Remember, how I have said if you can see the car or trucks’s rear tires touching the pavement in front of you, then you have left enough room to always get around them if you have too. That’s real easy to do on a bike, but it works on any vehicle from a compact car to a semi. Many bikers are hitting other drivers mostly because they just got a little distracted, whether looking at what I mentioned earlier or sight seeing, and then it’s over. Pay attention when following any vehicle, and be safe! Cochise Chops 50 50 Chops
