cochisechops@yahoo.com (386) 690-6270 First, I am a sponsor for Midwest Motorcycle’s 30th Anniversary Bike Show Feb. 18th @ The Beaver Bar. Always a good time to be had at this great event! Second, OB’s Pan/Shovel Show was off the hook, as usual. Besides all the beautiful old iron, I think the highlight for most was the Over 50 years old Bikini Contest. Not to take away from the young girls, but you older ladies rocked it!!! Third, thank you Pat & Bonnie for the awesome & very good quality handmade pot holders that you gifted Bianca & I. We truly appreciate them, my friends! ********** As you may have read on Fake Book, B, Lucy (our new pup) and me went on an almost 3 week vacation out West, mainly to see the Grand Canyon, but we hit a few special places between here & there, and a few on the way home, which consisted of the BEST places, which was seeing our KY & TN family, especially getting to hold & love on that new GREAT Grandson, CJ!!! We pulled out of the house sometimes around 10am heading West to Ocala to stop and eat some of the best, if not the best Mexican food anywhere. Sorry, I can’t remember the name of it. I just know it’s on Hwy 40 on the Westside of town in a strip mall, made up mostly of Mexican businesses. I can’t recall where we stayed that first night, but it was in Florida. The next morning we headed to Mobile, AL to visit the USS Alabama. It was all good, except for a couple of things, it wasn’t free anymore & the volunteers treated us all like little children, BUT the biggest problem I had was they made us lock up Lucy. Ok, but then everyone else was carrying their dogs, so I left pissed off, but still enjoyed my time with B and the ship was awesome. I believe we stayed in MS that night, where we met some of the friendliest & nicest people ever! The next morning we headed towards Houston looking for Hwy 68 North Chops 7

God’s Corner

You know my folly, O God; my guilt is not hidden from you. May those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me, O Lord, the Lord Almighty; may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel. —Psalm 69:5-6 My thoughts on today’s verse While we’re all weak and sinful, we are thankful to have Jesus to atone for our sins and to intercede before the Father on our behalf. Hallelujah for that grace! However, there are still a couple of significant problems with our sins. This verse reminds us of one of them. We don’t want our sins to become a stumbling block to others or a disgrace to God and his people. Let’s avoid sin because that is what God wants us to do. Let’s avoid sin so it won’t reflect poorly on God’s people. Let’s certainly avoid sin to keep from influencing others to sin. Let’s also pray for ourselves and our brothers and sisters in Christ that God will not allow our failures to disgrace his Church, his Christ, and his cause.

to Hico, TX (pronounced HIGH CO), the place that swears Billy The Kid lived there all his life, after leaving Ft. Sumner, NM. where he lived under the alias Brushy Bill Roberts. They had a very cool small museum, for a donation only, and the people were friendly, but Lucy didn’t like the older lady working there, She had never growled at anyone, but she did this woman. We spent the night in Hico, ate breakfast at the (kind of) infamous diner, famous for it’s homemade pies, but I eat breakfast, which tasted the same there as it does here, gravy in a bag!!! It was called the Koffee Kup, I think! Now on to Ft. Sumner, where Billy The Kid was murdered, shot in the back by Billy’s friend & coward, Pat Garrett! They had a much larger museum ($5 a piece to see) there of Billy’s escapades, and swore Billy died there, as they have a burial plot with his name on it. They refuted Hico’s claims! So we back tracted a few miles and went to the cemetary. Neither place sold me on their claims, but were adament they were both correct. For me it just didn’t matter one iota! I forgot that we stopped in New Orleans for the day, after leaving our motel in MS. We found out the best way to see that city was on a sight seeing bus tour. We saw it all, then exited downtown and eat at the Oyster House, before leaving. By the way, it didn’t smell like pee, stale beer & vomit this time through, LOL!!! We had a good time there. Now it was on to Hico, TX! I believe we stayed in Clovis, NM the next night before heading to AZ. While in Flagstaff my brakes were fading, so to make it short, we spent 2 nights there, having a new Master Cyclinder put on, NOW, to the Grand Canyon. What a sight to behold! First Lucy got loose in the welcome center and thought everyone that was trying to catch her, was playing, so she just ran & ran, then peed under the table of snooty people who acted like she was a jackal or a mountain lion. Good job Lucy!!! LOL Then we went to the petrified forrest deal, it was diappointing to me, as there was no forrest and one old tree laying in a pull off area that was suppose to be petrified. By now, we were anxious to see what we Chops 10

came all this way for, the BIG HOLE in the ground, and we were not disappointed!!! After that we eased Northeast, going through the Navaho Nation, before crossing over into (4 Corners) CO, were it got cold(er). We stayed at the Cozy Inn, a small mom & pop motel in Cortez, CO. The next moring we got up scraped the frost off the windshield and went to Durango, were we ate breakfast at some famous restaurant. The aura was excellent as was the food. We would have walked the streets but everything was closed off for a Veteran’s Day parade. Oh shoot, I forgot we stopped in Winslow, AZ for pictures on the corner & a really good lunch. I’m not for sure if it was before or after Flagstaff, I think before. My mind is getting more foggy by the moment as I’m trying to remember what all we did. So we now leave Durango, heading to the burial plot of the STAR of the Easy Rider Movie, Dennis Hopper, in Taos, NM, where we spent the night, after visiting his burial plot. I’m going to stop here, mostly because I’m tired of typing & trying to remember!!! Big Love!!!

THE LIFE THAT MANY WILL NOT UNDERSTAND: I own a motorcycle because of a personal life choice. One day when I am very old and when I cannot ride anymore, it will be in my garage as a trophy of my memories. I have met people who taught me something and have the same spirit. I meet people now who get wisdom from me. I get wet, I get cold, And I have been hot, I was afraid, I fell, And I stood up, I even hurt myself, But also, I laughed out loud with the wind. I spoke a thousand times with myself and Still do. I sang and shouted with joy like a madman, And yes ... sometimes I cried. I have seen wonderful places because of motorcycles. I have made curves that even my dad would be proud of; other times I made curves full of terror. I stopped many times to see a landscape. I spoke with perfect strangers. I go out with frustrations inside and return home with a feeling of absolute peace in my heart. I always think how dangerous it is, knowing that the meaning of courage is to advance even feeling fear. Every time I go out to my ride I think about how wonderful it is. I learned through gestures to communicate with other riders. I spend money that I do not have, I gave up many things, but it’s all worth it... My bike is not a means of transportation but is a piece of steel, aluminum and plastic with wheels that I am blessed with, it’s part of who I am. I love my friends and the joy of great people & motorcycles! ... May the angels guard my travels, for they know the road ahead of me...

Lifelong commitment is not what most people think it is. It’s not waking up every morning to make breakfast and eat together. It’s not cuddling in bed until both of you fall asleep. It’s not a clean home filled with laughter and love making every day. It’s someone who steals all the covers, and snores, it’s slammed doors and a few harsh words at times. It’s stubbornly disagreeing and giving each other the silent treatment until your hearts heal, and then forgiveness. It’s coming home to the same person every day that you know loves and cares about you in spite of, and because of, who you are. It’s laughing about the one time you accidentally did something stupid. It’s about dirty laundry and unmade beds. It’s about helping each other with the hard work of life. It’s about swallowing the nagging words instead of saying them out loud. It’s about eating the easiest meal you can make and sitting down together at a late hour because you both had a crazy day. It’s when you have an emotional breakdown and your love lays down with you and holds you, and tells you everything is going to be okay. And you believe them. It’s about still loving someone even though sometimes they make you absolutely insane. Loving someone isn’t always easy, sometimes it’s hard (reminds me of that song). But it is amazing and comforting and one of the best things you will ever experience.

The Outlaws are an American southern rock band formed in 1972. Like other southern rock bands, they used two lead guitars. However, the Outlaws’ used three- and four-part vocal harmonies which made them different from other southern rock bands who usually had a single lead singer. Their self-titled debut was released in 1975, a few years after the Allman Brothers Band’s greatest glories and a couple of years before the untimely demise of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd. The Outlaws latched onto their Southern heritage by way of Florida, threw in some harmony by way of the Eagles, and then wrote a number of songs that played to their strengths. The result was a good classic rock & roll album. Several of their best songs are present here, including “There Goes Another Love Song,” “Green Grass and High Tides,” and “Song for You.” Hughie Thomasson only sings lead on these three songs, but since two of them were the best-known Outlaw songs, it is his voice that is most associated with the band. Although “Green Grass and High Tides” has been played a million times on classic rock stations, it deserves mention. The song still sounds fresh in the context of the album and doesn’t feel long at its nearly ten-minute length. The Outlaws’ debut will leave the listener singing along and dreaming about the good ol’ days. Chops 37

What is an example of an actor who has become so engulfed by the character that he has become a detriment to himself in real life? This is Martin Sheen at 36. A handsome man, right? Early in his career, many remembered as another James Dean. This is Martin Sheen in one of the opening scenes of Apocalypse Now, as Captain Benjamin L. Willard. Do you see the blood? It’s true. And the anguished expression on his face? That is also true. In the scene, Captain Willard was soaking drunk, alone in a hotel room in Saigon, defeated by his own demons after spending several years in action in Vietnam. Martin Sheen was so immersed in Captain Willard’s shoes that he got soaking drunk, punched a mirror, broke it and got a deep cut on his thumb. The director, Frances Ford Coppola, ordered the cameraman to continue filming while actor Martin Sheen drunk faced his own demons. The anguish you see is so real that Sheen avoided going to see the film for several months after its release and did so in the end only at the insistence of a close friend who wanted to see it. She avoided going to see him because she was afraid to witness that scene - which she said she had forgotten. He then admitted that he remembered it well but had done his best to forget it. Captain Willard was tasked with going up a river in Vietnam and assassinating a colonel (Colonel Kurtz, played by Marlon Brando) who had driven mad people by the follies of war, and who had proclaimed himself lord of a bloodthirsty colony of savage Vietnamese nationalists. The film - shot in the Philippines, since the real Vietnam War was still ongoing - follows Willard and a small team on a PBR (Patrol Boat, River) on their journey down the river, to Kurtz’s camp. (The entrance to the camp by the river) Sheen - an athlete in excellent physical condition - wrote that he was concerned from the beginning about the intense physical exertion that the script required - in a tropical climate with intense humidity like that of the Philippines.

Chops 39

Despite his physical condition, Sheen suffered a heart attack halfway through filming. He was rushed to Manila and spent six weeks recovering before he could return to the set. I’m not going to spoil this classic movie by revealing the ending. But it’s a study of human darkness, and according to many Vietnam veterans, it did an excellent job of portraying the madness of the Vietnam War. Sheen took several weeks in Hawaii to strip off this role and return to the “real world” before returning to California. If you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s a beautiful film with incredible performances by Sheen, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper, as well as a 14-year-old Laurence Fishburne. (A little less that of Brando, in my opinion). Extra bonus: To get permission to shoot in the Philippines, Frances Ford Coppola agreed to destroy all their sets. Destruction has become the end credits of Apocalypse Now, where they film the destruction of Kurtz’s camp. Remember that there were no CGI special effects in the seventies - they are real shots from 12 different camera angles. The cameramen had to crouch down to avoid being hit by burning pieces of set flying around.

This is the Walker family cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, USA! The Walker family (13 total) lived here before there was a national park. These are the last two Walker sisters who actually lived here. The last sister died in 1966. The black and white picture was taken about 1960, when the cabin looked the same as 150 years ago. The cabin is now a tourist destination that includes some of the original furniture and tools. Elinor B. Mullin My dad worked for the GSMNP. He would come home talking about visiting the Walker Sisters. Funny how none ever married and left home. My own ancestors cabins still stand in the Park! Thank you for sharing! in 1891 – The electric tattooing machine was officially patented by a New York Irish-American tattoo artist, named Samuel O’Reilly. O’Reilly’s rambunctious, enigmatic life began in May 1854 in Waterbury, Connecticut. Both his parents were Irish immigrants, and he was the oldest of five children. At an early age, he – like so many other Waterbury residents of that era – began working in the brass industry (Waterbury is nicknamed “The Brass City”). The electric tattooing machine was officially patented on 8 December Chops 44

1891 by a New York tattoo artist named Samuel O’Reilly. But even O’Reilly would be the first to admit that his invention was really an adaptation of a machine invented by Thomas Edison—the Autographic Printing Pen. O’Reilly witnessed a demonstration of the electric pen, a sort of writing drill that Edison had built to allow documents to be etched into stencils and then copied. The electric pen was a failure. The tattooing machine was an unqualified, worldwide smash. O’Reilly’s tattoo machine worked by using a hollow needle filled with permanent ink. An electric motor powered the needle in and out of the skin at a rate of up to 50 punctures per second. The tattoo needle inserted a small drop of ink below the surface of the skin each time. The original machine patent allowed for different sized needles deliver varying amounts of ink, a very design-focused consideration. Before O’Reilly’s innovation, tattoos—the word comes from the Tahitian word “tatu” which means “to mark something”—were much harder to make. Tattoo artists worked by hand, perforating the skin perhaps three times a second as they installed their designs. O’Reilly’s machine with its 50 perforations per second was an enormous improvement in efficiency. Further enhancements and refinements to the tattoo machine have been made and the modern tattooing device is now capable of delivering 3,000 punctures per minute. Start Your Sunday Although this ride was some time ago, it obviously left an indelible impression on our memories. So, how do you start your Sundays? Do you bounce out of bed, hit the throne, then brush those pearly whites? Or, do you just flop out of bed, plop onto the throne, then brush those... oh what’s the use! Well, on this fine Sunday morning ours started like this. Up at eight am, drove our eldest grandson to work, home about eight thirty or so. Shoved one of the bikes out of the garage and onto the driveway, saddled up and headed towards Port Orange for a Memorial Day Veteran’s poker run! Hit the first three stops to begin gathering up the beginnings of another losing hand. (The poi and unscriptednt is to support the vets, not win the poker run). The third stop aimed us right towards Tropical Tattoo, not so coincidentally. We planned it that way and you’ll soon know why. Also not so coincidental, that is where the monthly Freedom Ride begins! Now, in case you’re not familiar with the monthly Freedom Ride, it’s a ride organized every month and lead by Pastor Cochise. Yes, the very namesake of the very popular and well read Cochise Chops Magazine. The ride is free and is open to anyone. The start of this month’s ride, however, offered something very, very special that Donna and I hadn’t ever experienced. Although I must admit, we have only participated in a half a dozen or so of these great rides. So, it’s not that these rides don’t often begin this way, it’s just that we may have missed some of them. Rolled into the parking at Tropical a bit later then we had intended, but we made it before the ride began. We sauntered our way around to the back of the building where the crowd of riders usually assemble. As we rounded the corner of the Chops 50

building we could hear Pastor Cochise speaking. But not just having a conversation, he was speaking and quoting from Scripture. Our eyes were met by a couple or a few dozen people, together, quiet, eyes fixed forward towards the good Pastor and seemingly hanging on his every syllable. He was holding church service for anyone who wanted to attend. We took a spot quickly just to his right so as not to wander and distract anyone else. We, too, joined the couple or few dozen people, together, quiet, eyes fixed towards the orator. Pastor Cochise spoke seamlessly for what was the last fifteen or twenty minutes of his sermon. Though we’ve spoken with him a number of times over the years, we’ve never had the opportunity to hear speak him speak from Scripture. His unwavering tone and relaxed body language exuded his complete comfort and belief is his every word. Passionate and strong yet soothing and comforting. We were both very moved and impressed! This was well within his wheelhouse! Thank You, Pastor! Then, like a well orchestrated dance, everyone engaged in a little idle chit-chat, handshakes and a few hugs, and then headed to the herd of iron steeds parked out front for the “Second” reason we were all there, (the first of coarse was the masterfully delivered service), The Freedom Ride! Great Day! Great Ride! Great Group! Great Inspiration! Now that’s the way to ..............Start Your Sunday ! Gregg Riggle

The Texas quote of the day comes from the legendary Charles Goodnight: “The cowboy of the old days is the most misunderstood man on earth. Few young people of the younger generation realize that the Western men ---- the cowboys ---- were as brave and as chivalrous as it is possible to be. Bullies and tyrants were unknown among them. They kept their places around a herd and under all circumstances; and if they had to fight they were always ready. Timid men were not known among them ---- the cowboy life did not fit the timid. Today many of the richest and greatest men of Texas were formerly cowboys. Of the hands I employed there are now at least three millionaires. Few cowboys have been tried for crimes than any other class of men.” ----- “Managing a Trail Herd,” Charles Goodnight, “Southwestern Historical Quarterly,” 1928
