cochisechops@yahoo.com (386) 690-6270 First thing I want to mention is the untimely, unexpected deaths of 2 very special people, Ms. Karen Shipstedt & Brother Petr Valder of the Swap Meets. Both of these folk were some of the most loving and kind hearted people that ever walked the face of this old world. Each exemplified extreme love for their friends, and even strangers. We had a joint Celebration of Life October the 22nd at Tropical Tattoo, with over 100 people showing up to pay their respects. It was evident to all there, as people begin to describe these 2, that they were not just special, but greatly loved. Karen went into the hospital with blood clots & somehow her life digressed into other things, as she was struggling to breath, and succombed to death after about one week. She is survived by her love, John Dodge, 2 sweetheart nieces and more family up North. Petr was Petr, a one of a kind man that moved here from another country, and not only loved the people here, But most importantly, Petr LOVED AMERICA! Oh, if people born here would follow his actions of true love for this nation. He was a man that worked hard everyday, as he went all over the Southeast finding Harley’s for sale. Many of them were “barn finds”, with some being one owners. Some how he & Mad Dog always brought them back to life. Petr had a heart attack while driving to pick up some parts & had passed on his way to the hospital. He was 52 years old. ********** I didn’t get out much over Biketoberfest, BUT where I went (ONLY) to my advertiser’s events, parties, etc., they were ALL GOOD!!! From Ed Walden’s Germanfest /Oktoberfest serving original German food, to the Boat Bar’s Bar BQ Buffet, it was the best! Chops 7
God’s Corner
Maybe one day the “today’s” church will get back to reading the Bible!!! I’ve studied it for 40 years and can not find the Scripture that says, “Come to our building to hear me preach! Come to our building to listen to our music! Come to our building to eat with us”! It does say not to forsake the assembling together with each other. So we should “get together” for exhortation! And I see nothing wrong with the above 3 things I mentioned, as long as we are heavily involved with doing the “Great Commission”! That is the life blood of the church, that is how a “church” grows. When was the last time you saw a church “out in the community” knocking on doors, inviting folks to Jesus (1st) and then to church (2nd)? Every church I ever pastored, I did this, with the help of many in the church. Yes, I even did it here, when we started Set Free Daytona. 1st Baptist Church, under the leadership of Bro. Bobby Welsh, grew that church into a great place of worship, because of their outreaches. They knocked on every single door surrounding their building. They went into their member’s communities & shared Jesus. Churches are dying in America, even in Daytona at a rapid pace, why? Matthew 28:19-20 “.........’GO’ & make disciples.........teaching them to ‘OBEY’ everything I commanded you...........and surely I am with you always.” You want Jesus with you “IN” church, then “GO OUT” and invite them to the feast, the “Marriage Feast”!!! When the Independent Baptist Churches, who built their congregations on outreach, stopped or slowed down their Bus Ministry, they began the slow decline of attendance, to now they have thousands of buses sitting & rusting away, & thousands of empty pews because someone, somewhere decided they were not relevant anymore, 1st Baptist Hammond, IN is one of those. My personal belief is that “IF” you call yourself a minister of any kind, your 1st job inside the building should be doing a bus ministry, this will humble you, but will propel you in what “It’s” all about. When was the last time you invited someone to Jesus?

It is always good to see some friends that come to town for the event, but for me it’s seeing the joy in many of my advertiser’s faces as they prepare to met the crowds and as they serve them. Most of CHOP’s people consider it a joy to play host to the many who show, with several really not doing anything much different, by just being themselves. Oh yeah, they may have a special band or a special food day, and hopefully they will be rewarded for their actions by making a little more money from it all. Several of the smaller bars do not raise their drink prices because they don’t go overboard with things that is out of their ordinary, and honestly they don’t put on the ritz, because they don’t have to. Their reputations for great service exceeds far beyond Daytona. etc. They are owners that love their business, their customers and the visitors, for many it’s just another week and that’s what I dig the most about them. Everything they do while an event is going on, they do every week for the locals!!! I, Cochise, love our advertisers!!! Now I understand many raising their drink prices to help defray the cost of 2 or 3 bands a day, it is just necessary and it pays off. I visited Boot Hill on Main St. 3 times & each time they had a great crowd. Sunday evening the parking lot was packed with people. Bikes were parked everywhere as people were trying to get in to listen to the best bands on Main St.!!! Speaking of best bands, OB’s has them also. The go to place in Deland is 1750 N. Hwy 17, for the coolest place to hang out. Not just for the music, but for the aura of the people and servers. The owners are top shelf. The drinks are great, the beer is cold & the food is the best. I only made it over once, as well as Sorry Charlies, but each place was packed and had great food for sale & good music. Our advertisers truly work hard for our business, so go support them. ********** Starting next month I’m going to share a series of stories I wrote on men being men! I think you will all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing them. These are from a life time of memories & all the way up to present day.

......and those who make me happy are getting less & less.........(BTW, all of my family makes me happy).............like someone said earlier, “Today, I’m not doing people!” LOL! I’m that way many days. As in today’s society, you can’t do anything anymore, without offending someone. Friends guilt trip you for staying home (because they love you) but when you do get out, others will find fault with you on something or for something. Just being kind isn’t appreciated. One day I was called out by an advertiser for not answering a text the way they expected, yet with all I do for advertisers (including them) with their ads, I very, very seldom ever get a “Thanks Brother”! It all can be summed up by that one quote we’ve heard for years & years, “The Good We Do, No One Remembers, The Bad Things (In Their Eyes) Are Never Forgotten”! It gets aggravating BUT it should NOT stop us from continuing being good to others, whether it’s returned or not! Cochise

1%er Interview Thanks for answering some questions for me, and for hopefully giving us some insight into the 1%er world as we know it today, compared to yester year. 1%er: Your welcome. CHOPS: Have you ever heard of this little Florida Magazine, called CHOPS? 1%er: No, but I’ve heard your name a few times. CHOPS: Oh No!!! 1%er: Hey, some of it was good, and some not so good. I’ve done my own research and have concluded that you are okay, (laughs). CHOPS: Good! Now, let me ask you some questions, first, tell me the BIGGEST difference between clubs, club life, etc. Today compared to the 70’s. 1%er: This may take awhile, (laughs). There are many! The biggest one is a lack of true brotherhood. Back when I got in, it was about fun. We had fun riding our choppers, bar hopping, making runs, partying among ourselves and other clubs. People trusted people more. Back then, RATS were very few, unlike today. CHOPS: Why is that? 1%er: Because of the magnitude of drugs that has gripped the clubs. Not selling them, but rather using them. As you know, we have had a rigid rule in our Club By Laws, that NEEDLES were not to be used, and if done by a member, he was immediately thrown out of the club. But today, drugs taken by mouth or smoked are just as addictive, and when a man is addicted to a drug, you can’t trust him. That “brother” will rat out other members to keep out of jail, so he can continue his habit. I’ve seen many a good men turn on us because they couldn’t beat the demon off of their back.
Chops 34
Back in the 70’s we rode and partied mostly for self pleasure, but also to shock regular AMA type motorcycle riders, the 99%ers, as well as Joe Citizen. Yes we had drugs, but not like today. It was a weekend thing, as we drank booze the rest of the week. Brotherhood was real in the 70’s, as well as (from other older brother’s testimonies) was in the 50’s and 60’s. I wish we could go back to those days. CHOPS: Me too. I loved the 70’s. As I told someone, the 70’s were 30 years long for me. What else has changed? 1%er: The mind set of these young new members. CHOPS: Huh? 1%er: Cochise, bike clubs hate to be called gangs, right? Yet, we have a group of young members who have come in with that gang mentality. CHOPS: I am not following? 1%er: Okay, some of the M/C’s started bolstering numbers, by recruiting new members. The problem was, they chose what they deemed “tough guys” that would be fight ready, or battle tested, like the street gangs CHOPS: Okay, I’m with you. 1%er: So they get a Harley and start prospecting, or in some instances, but not in our club, are given full patches immediately. So, this is what comes into the club. A bunch of young men who aren’t afraid to throw down or shoot. The problem is, they shoot first then find out what’s up. Many times there is no trying to get out of an encounter, they just shoot. I have some GREAT brothers who are very young, but they have their heads on straight. They are brought up in the club under some righteous mentors, that show them the proper way to deal with conflicts.
Chops 35
CHOPS: So what you’re saying is, some of these street gang members turned motorcycle club members still react to situations today as they did when they were on the street. 1%er: Yes. Not all, but many. Actually, they also started the new dress code for 1%er’s like the dude in Sons Of Anarchy portrayed. The solid white sneakers and such. They also were the ones who started the “colors” thing, or I should say made it a point of interest for it, the colors, to become a reason to maim or even kill. CHOPS: Explain please. 1%er: Okay, it’s like if their colors are purple, I’m just making this up (laughs), and they see another biker wearing another color that’s not purple and riding a Harley, I’m not taking about patches here, but bandanas, hats, shirts and such, they automatically want to take their stuff and beat them up. They think you are a supporter of that other “colored” club, though you may be innocent. CHOPS: I’ve experienced this a couple of times. I was approached by a young member whose colors were, let’s say black and I had on a red do rag and he approached me and wanted to know if I was trying to make a statement, what? I had never experienced this in over 40 years of riding motorcycles. I wore a red hat in the Outlaw’s club house about 15 years ago, and no one said anything, as it was an innocent deal, and they knew it. Every member there KNEW I would never disrespect them, or anyone or club for that matter. But, I thought this young man was going to throw down on me. If it had not been for some older guys, that was with him, he would have tried me. I hate this stuff, but this is what you’re talking about, right? 1%er: Yes! Like if a Blood saw a Cript, you automatically hated him and the color blue. It’s like that in many clubs today, but was not like that in the past. I hear you had a problem like this about 10 years ago, true? CHOPS: Not sure? You mean what I just told you? Chops 36
1%er: No. Some guy out West started MFing you all over the internet, I read it on a few forums, like Cyril Huze and 1%er News, because you lived in Daytona. You remember that? CHOPS: Yes, though I try not to. He was actually hacking into a mutual friends wifi, I knew this from the IP address, and he was continually ripping me up. He told everyone I was an Outlaw M/C member and that I was the “bottom of the barrel” trash, etc. He got pretty nasty, but our mutual friend found out and shut him down, I guess. But he had me shook a couple of times with threats of bodily harm from his “bros” that where in Daytona, incognito. Just because I lived in a certain area, I was inerrantly aligned with a club, of course when I first moved to FL, everyone told everyone I was a Hells Angel, and that got pretty intense for about a year. However, I am following you quiet well, on the bringing the street gang mentality into the clubs. I never saw it, until now, well maybe I did, but didn’t want to say it, because I am not a club member or 1%er. 1%er: I hate that stuff. I gauge a man by what he is, as a man. Everyone says the patch doesn’t make the man, but the man makes the patch. I agree, but for me, I see the person first, before I notice what he’s wearing. I can’t always do that, but I try. I mean some others see me in my vest and they are on me and judging me before they can see me, as a man. Cochise, you know why a judge wears a black robe? Because it is suppose to cover his clothes, which tells, many times, his personality, so he can be neutral in judging. Of course we all know that’s bull shit many times, and of course he isn’t suppose to judge a person appearing in front of him on appearance, etc, but he does anyway, (laughs). And that is how we should all be. CHOPS: I agree. When I hug a person, I am hugging that person no matter what he is wearing. Some may do it to suck up or have other intentions, but not me. As I have said many times, “I am not a groupie to the stars”, HaHaHa!!! I know in some places, just a hug to a member of a .......go to page 42 Chops 37

48 years ago today, October 11, 1975, NBC premiered a show called NBC’s Saturday Night. It featured a cast including Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, George Coe and Michael O’Donoghue and was produced by Lorne Michaels. In 1976, NBC purchased the name Saturday Night Live and in 1997 changed the name of the show. It quickly became a staple of late night television and is obviously still running. The show has had over 130 different players. However, the ’70s cast (which eventually included Bill Murray) is thought by many to be the best.

club is considered a gesture of support, but...............what can you do, eh? I’ll give you one instance and I’ll get back to you doing more talking than me. When, I moved back to KY, I went to a Bike Night and saw many folks from my past, and one was a young man I had known since he was a kid. His whole family was into old Harley’s, etc. And they were “good people”, so anyways, he sees me and comes up and gives me a hug and then we talk. After a few minutes I noticed he had some patches on his vest, and I said what’s this? He said he was prospecting for a 1%er club now. I said, “Cool”, and that was that. Several people came up to me and asked if I knew who that was? I said, “yes”, an old friend from 30 years ago, and they said, but don’t you know he is a _________? Whatever, I don’t look at the patch, rather I see a friend, or a man that could become a friend as we have one thing in common, riding Harley Davidson’s, period. Is that a good example of what you mean? 1%er: Yes, by the way, you are a talker, aren’t you? (Laughs) CHOPS: Hey, I am an orator you know! (We Both Laugh)

Rest In Peace Ms. Pat, you were one of the good ones and will be greatly missed by many that knew & loved you! Thanks for loving me & being a faithful customer to the magazine. Prayers for Mike & your family , until we meet again! Ms. Pat was the former owner of Pat’s Place in Deland. She sold it right before she passed. I led many Freedom Rides to Pat’s Place & did everything I could to help their business, even more as she became ill. Two days after Pat sold her place, I dropped off some mags there & met the new owner, who said he definitely wanted to continue advertising with us, well that was several months ago, and after floating him for 4 months, and leaving a SASE at each time of delivery, he never paid us one penny. Oh, he promised to pay each time, per text message, BUT....... Someone says he owns another bar in Orange City, I don’t know about that, but he changed the name of Pat’s to The Pit Stop, and until I get my money, and I will get my $400, I’ll never sit foot in that place again nor support anything they do. --This may be a little off the wall, but just a little story about my first “chopper” around 1967 or 68... I was around 17 at the time. I didn’t do any of the work on this, I didn’t know how to do anything! A guy from out of town had traded it in to the local Honda shop on another bike, and I bought it from that dealer. It was a “chopped” Honda Super Hawk that the previous owner had made into a hard tail, and set it up with a peanut tank, and a home made seat. I didn’t know how to do anything at that time, cause the only bike I had before that was a CB160 that was just a stock little bike. --Of course the Super Hawk was a “little bike” too, but hey, I was just a kid, and even being just a 305 Honda, the bike had “the look”, ya know.... --The four of us in this picture were thick as thieves from Jr High all the way thru to 50+ years old when JP died (He’s the guy on the right end of the picture) then “Duck” (on the other end) died a few years later. So me, on the bike & Mike (next to me, giving the finger) are the only two left. Haven’t seen Mike in about 4 years. --and Here we were..... we had the world by the balls, thought we were all just “too cool” and Duck’s mom talks us into letting her take our picture. We were all show-offs anyway, so it didn’t take much coaxing. (I never really outgrew the show-off thing) --1967, 68, and those days in general were some of the best times of my life. Now I’m just one more old man with a few bullshit stories to tell to damn near anyone who’ll listen. --My next bike after that Super Hawk was a 1950 Pan head that had once been a city cop bike here in Connersville, Indiana. By 1970, I had a small chopper shop called “Custom Bikes by Bat” and started learning how to do frame molding & paint about the same time.--So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it, even if some of the details are a little fuzzy in my memory.--I hope ya got at least a little smile out of it. Thanks, ........ Bat

LONG HAIR Traditionally, long hair was always a symbol of masculinity. All of history’s great warriors had long hair, from the Greeks (who wrote odes to their heroes’ hair) to the Nordic, from the American Indians (famous for their long shiny hair) to the Japanese. And the longer and beautiful the hair was, the more manly the warrior was considered. Vikings flaunted their braids and samurai wore their long hair as a symbol of their honor (they cut their braid when they lose honor). When a warrior was captured, his mane was cut to humiliate him, to take away his beauty. That custom resumed in what is today military service. There when new soldiers begin their training the first thing they do is cut their hair to undermine their self-esteem, make them submissive and make them see who’s boss. The Romans were the ones who “invented” short hair so to speak, between the 1st and 5th centuries AD.. In battles they believed this gave them defensive advantages, since their opponents couldn’t grab them by the hair. This also helped them to recognize each other in the battlefield. Short hair on men is a relatively new “invention” that has nothing to do with aesthetics. But today we often see men being humiliated, sometimes called “gay” for wearing long hair, not knowing that short hair is actually the “anti-masculine” and is a repressive social imposition, while long hair symbolizes freedom.

In 1985, Waylon Jennings agreed to be the subject of a celebrity roast in Atlanta and he asked Johnny Cash to be part of it. Johnny Cash sent this funny letter to Waylon explaining why he couldn’t make it. “Waylon, this roast shouldn’t hurt you too much tonight, because your brain is already fried. Seriously, I wanted to be there so bad, but I’ve been told that the only way to get from Jamaica to Atlanta is to travel. I sincerely hope you will accept this honest reason. We miss you and Shooter. Did you ever find out who Shooter’s mother is . . . . . I love you, Jessi, don’t I June? Jessi, you are one of the few truly great women I have met in my entire life. As soon as we get home, we want you to find Waylon’s clothes that he is going to wear that day, then show him where the car keys are, and come to see us. Waylon, I love you, don’t I God? Just remember if you’re ever down to your last dollar, if all your old friends turn their backs on you, if you’re so low that you wish you could die, just remember, I’ll always be . . . . . . . . . Johnny Cash”
