Boot Hill Saloon on Main St!!! Daytona Beach, FL This place is legendary. With the famous grave yard across the street is where they get their slogan, “Come On In And Take A Seat, As You Are Better Off Here Than Across The Street”!!! The Boot Hill & Tropical Tattoo have been CHOPS Magazine’s right & left arms, holding us up, with their monthly ads & support in so many other ways. Last month I had my annual Blue Plate Special Bike Show there, (they say) drawing around 500 people, I estimated around 300 to 350 people showing up (and I don’t know how many bikes, but it was a lot) to enjoy some good free food, both from The Boot & me PLUS a great menu to choose from, & a couple of kegs of free beer as well. Karin, Al and the staff were great, everyone of them!!! So pull up a seat & order some great food and a cocktail or a choice of many beers, both bottle or draft!!! It was high noon on a Wednesday when Willie & me pulled out of the Cracker Barrel on 40 & I-95 heading North to the Smoke Out in Salibury, NC. The temperture wasn’t bad when we left but as we got furter North, the tempts went North also. It was 97 in Claxton, GA. We only rode 300 miles that day & it was the toughest 300 miles I’ve rode in a long time, the HEAT got me (and maybe my age LOL). Or maybe it was because I rode to Webster the previous Sunday, about 200 miles round trip, in again, unbearable heat. I was also riding the Shovelhead FLH that doesn’t have a windshield on it, and believe it or not, as I age, it gets a little more difficult riding without one, especially if your seat sits you up higher, as this one does. Not like the Chopper that sits low and it’s more tolerable on wind resistance. Or maybe it was hanging with a bunch of awesome folks for several hours at the Blue Plate Special Bike Show the next day, or Monday. That’s when Willie asked me if I was ready for the trip up to the Smoke Out in NC. It’s like, “What?”, I thought it was the next weekend, but here we are, bone tired and I got an almost 600 mile trip (riding back roads is a bit longer, so Tuesday I got a couple “Honey Chops 7

God’s Corner

“You may have been born in church, baptized in church, served in church, could have married in church, died in church, until you were veiled in church and still end up in hell, because you were only in the church and not in Christ. It is necessary to be born again, take up our cross and follow Jesus. Many have religion, but have no relationship with or even belong to the living God.” The Holy Spirit is opening the world’s eyes to see that we must have a relationship with Jesus Christ, be born again and that we (the body of Christ) are the church. The church (body of Christ) are to assemble together in buildings, homes, stadiums, streets, stores, schools, jobs or wherever (Hebrews 10:23-25) and express their love for the Lord, love for one another, worship, grow in the Grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, be equipped, share spiritual gifts and show gratitude to God the Father. Not just go to a building religiously and go through the motions or check the box, but get serious about following His Way!!!

Do Lists” done, before meeting Will Wednesday to leave, which pulling out at high noon wasn’t a great idea, but here we go!!! We stayed in Statesboro & got some decent rest, but I was still beat. Willie slept in, which is very unusual, as he likes to get up and take advantage of the Hotel’s breakfast. Time to get a good warm shower & hit the road North. The next (almost) 300 miles weren’t bad. We pulled into a Love’s to take a bathroom break and my partner got some fries, so I ate a few of them. It was a Hardys, and wow, even though I have never really liked french fries, these things were good and addictive, so I got some and we decided to just relax and “eat the fries”. That’s where we met a guy who reminded us of Art, or he favored him, so we struck up a conversation with the guy and enjoyed his conversing, the fries and just getting out of the sun for a bit. Hwy 601 that we were traveling on ran us right into Salisbury and as we exited I-85, (which 601 runs along with it for about 20 miles), we saw our hotel, so we got checked in and then rode over to the Rowan County Fairgrounds, the place of the Smoke Out. As usual, we saw many familiar faces as we got off our bikes, and as usual Jeff Cochran of Speed King Choppers & Photography was the 1st to give us a big hug. I’ve always enjoyed Jeff’s work, but more than that, his friendship. The next thing I knew, Willie had commendared us a golf cart to ride around on to see the folks that were already there. To me, next to the ride, this is the best part of going to events like this. Willie T. Jones was already asking local people where was the best Bar BQ around and they said the “The Smoke Pit”!, and they were not wrong, man it was GOOD!! But we didn’t make it there that night, we settled for Texas Road House instead, which is always great food. Then, bed time!!! And we were READY for it!!! The highs & lows of Friday & Saturday! The highs, seeing old friends & making new ones, plus getting to eye ball some of the nicest & coolest motorcycles anywhere. The Legends exhibition was awesome, but just as many awesome builds & choppers were sitting around outside, everywhere. The mini bike races & the dirt drags were very entertaining. Congrats Johnny 99 in winning!!!

Chops 10

More highs were being a part of two 69 year old men HEE HAWING in the hotel room at 11 o’clock at night laughing like 2 teenagers over who was passing the worse smelling gas. LOL I think it was a tie!!! The last time I remember doing this was in Boot Camp in the Army, 1973, when the guys were holding cigartte lighters up to you know what & letting one rip. Listen, Boys Will Always Be Boys! Another high for Willie, was telling our waitress at the Mexican Restaurant it was my birthday, so I got to wear a sombero, heard the HBD song, and then got a face full of whipped cream! The lows? Ordering a greasy pizza at 10:30pm, eating it & going to bed, by 4:30am, I was rolling in pain from a belly ache & it didn’t stop until about 10am, and Willie just laughed. LOL Sunday morning as we pulled out, we picked up another rider heading our way, Gary Raphael, and though we always ride alone, cause we really understand each other’s ways, like we know one another’s moves, but it was good having a new person riding home with us. I’m not sure when we decided to ride straight through, coming home, but we did, and it was a good ride. Again, running the secondary roads, it’s a tad short of 600 miles, not bad for a couple of older cats, plus our new buddy was 75 years old. Thanks for encouraging us Gary to know we can do it for another 6 or more years like you!!! Also, on the way home we were looking for a Bar BQ place, can you believe that? So I pushed us about 125 miles between stops to Statesboro so the Boss Man could eat at Uncle Shugs, but they were closed, so we pushed on, and thank God, because we found a place in Jessup, GA called Captain Joes. One of the best salad bars I’ve ever eaten, even Will liked it. The seafood was good and huge servings. Jessup also has a Drive In theater. After we left there, we shot for home and busted azz to get here. The only downfall was Gary & Willie had a hard time seeing at night, especially on a crowded I-95, but we all made it and waved good bye to each other as we all exited at 3 different exits. It was a good time! Chops 11

An Old Ad From Easy Riders And They Sold Many LOL

LIFE LESSON 1. Don’t lend money to your family. Give it. 2. Never shake a hand while sitting down. 3. Stop telling people more than they need to know. 4. Never eat the last piece of something you didn’t buy. 5. Don’t throw your friend under the bus to impress someone. 6. Never insult the cooking when you are the guest. 7. Don’t use the urinal next to an occupied one. 8. Don’t take out your phone during a conversation. 9. Never take credit for work you didn’t do. 10. Listen, nod, and most of all make eye contact. 11. Don’t make fun of your friend in front of his kids. 12. Never let emotions overpower you. 13. Never beg for a relationship. 14. Dress well no matter what the occasion. 15. Why would anyone bring their family here for vacation? I mean all we have to offer them is, driving on the beach and the rules are so heavy, it’s not worth it. We have a live TV program called REELZ showing crime here every Friday night! It appears the local government doesn’t care about anything at all East of the river. Isn’t the above photo awesome? I remember when it looked like this and it was packed everyday from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with visitors enjoying what “The World’s Most Famous Beach” had to offer, and spending BIG money, but now..............NOTHING! We went to listen to a band last Saturday night at the band shell, and we parked on Main St. and walked down to the music venue, thus causing us to walk the length of the boardwalk, and there is nothing there anymore, or maybe 2 or 3 stores, & that’s it. So if you don’t want to ride the sling shot deal or the other ride on the other side of the street, all you can do, is look at the ocean. SAD Chops 13

The Living Legend Mr. Sheldon Davis Chops 20

Back many years ago I bought an old Harley basket case. Engine was blown up and everything needed fixed or replaced. In rural Virginia there was a Dairy farmer known for building tight and reliable engines. C.T. Wickline had been building and repairing Harley’s out of a shed on his dairy farm, for 50 years or more, (this was 1980). So I take my busted engine to him and he looks at it and decides to salvage the cases but trash the rest. So he orders an S&S 88 stroker kit, and then lays down the rules! Every time I show up to help milk the cows he will work on my engine, and I have to buy all the parts!! So I have to get up at 4:00am and drive to his farm and help milk and then clean all the equipment almost every morning for a couple months!! After milking his wife would have breakfast on the table and then down to the shed to build on my engine. S&S stroker with a Lineweber J-3 cam and a S&S Super B carb. When not working for him I stripped the frame and sheet metal and repainted. Went through the transmission and every single part of that old 72 Shovelhead! Old C.T. could out work three people and that was with a wooden leg as he lost one at Daytona in a motorcycle wreck back in the 60’s. I asked him one time why he helped teach some of us how to build motorcycles? He said each Harley mechanic should try to mentor and teach someone else before we die!! He passed away a few years later and I never forgot the lessons that old man taught me. ~ Truitt Gaines

I work for Cochise CHOPS Magazine, as a Salesman & Distributor. So far, I’ve only sold 2 ads this year, but I’ll keep on trying! Now about me personally, what I like doing best is Radio Wave Propagation. I might be referred to as a Communication Specialist. I have all Communication of Radios, including Ham Radio, which is ALL land. Also marine radio, ALL water, and aviation, ALL sky plus ALL space including 100 satellites, and the Moon Bounce back & forth to earth. My rank is G-12 DB, which is the highest rank you can get. DB means Distress Both which you have to pass 2 tests, over the 6 I’ve already passed, #7-#9 to get the DB. We Americans have an agreement with other countries called a Memoranda of Understanding, which means not to violate their rules of communication laws. I had to take about 5,000 questions and on all tests, I missed 2 on #7 & none on #9, so basically I missed 2 out of 150 questions. There is a school in St. Petersburg, FL for this but I did not go to sea school because I’m self taught, plus I managed to score the highest score in the world, a record since 1924. The highest score, after going to sea school was an 84 or a B, so how did I score so high & break the record? Well, I studied a whole lot (he reads a lot daily, Cochise) and just prayed to Jesus for help, and He came through. I can’t thank God enough for my relationship with Jesus Christ. I would like to thank Cochise, Bianca & many friends for accepting me as family. I thank God for steering me to his family. Cochise is a Christian minister & takes the Great Commission seriously, and because of that I am no longer (kind of forced to be) a loner, because NOW I know I have a family & some great friends that I can count on, and I hope they ALL know that they can count on me. Thank you ALL for standing with & loving me. I love you all, Fred “Shiny” Robinson

In Richard Kelly’s book, “The Andy Griffith Show,” Andy Griffith had the following to say about actor Howard McNear (Floyd): “Howard, first of all, was a leading man in the San Diego theatre years ago. He never was in New York in his life. He developed this comic character, I believe, on The Jack Benny Show. Howard was a nervous man and he became that man, Floyd. “Then Howard had a stroke and was bad off for a long time. He was out of our show for about a year and three-quarters. We did a lot of soft shows, that is, those that were not hard on comedy -- stories about the boy or the aunt. But we needed comedy scenes to break up things. “We were working on a script one day, and Aaron [Ruben] said, `Boy do I wish we had Howard.’ And one of us said, `Why don’t we see if we can get him.’ So right then we called up Howard’s house and we got his wife, Helen. `Oh,’ she said, `it would be a godsend.’ “Well, we wrote him a little scene. He was paralyzed all down his left side and so we couldn’t show him walking. We had him sitting or we built a stand that supported him. He could then stand behind the barber chair and use one hand. Most of the time, however, we had him sitting. His mind was not affected at all. He was with us about two years after that before he died. Finally poor Howard died. I’m sorry because there was never anyone like him. A kind, kind man.”

THE FIGHTING 50’s!!! It was my 50th birthday & it was Saturday evening, a time for our club meeting, and the subject came up, about what I wanted to do or go? There was a bar there called the Black Cat, a country bar that had a pretty tough reputation, but that’s where I wanted to go, just to shoot some pool and a drink a beer. The majority of the club voted no, because each time they had been there, a riot started, not by them but by others who wanted to try them, but we went any way, as I promised I wouldn’t start any trouble, so ten of us left. When we arrived at the Black Cat it was packed, and the pool tables were taken, so I put up my fifty cents to challenge whoever the winner would be when it came to my quarters. The bar was lined up with so much beer for my birthday, there was no way I could drink them, and I wasn’t a big drinker, so the brothers and anyone else who wanted a free beer helped themselves. It was all going good, as it was my turn to shoot pool, and that was one of those nights were I just couldn’t miss. I ran the table twice? Then the ladies started challenging me and was also flirting. Now these were young ladies, whose boyfriends were standing around watching all the action. None of us were flirting back, just having fun, when I went to the bar to get a beer, with the pool cue still in my hand, I was cut off by a young buck who wanted the house pool stick I was using & carrying, saying it was his stick. Being cool & careful, I told him, “Win the game against me & it’s yours.” That’s when it started! The kid asked me again for the stick and I said, NO”! So his next words were, “Give me the stick. bitch”! Oh man, I promised I was going to be good, but come on man. He said it again, so I switched the cue in my hand and cracked him hard on his head, right between his eyes. The chit was on! Blood was covering the floor and spilt beer, as one of his buddies hit me from behind with a beer bottle. He had about 12 friends there, so it was pretty fair, except for one thing, this kid NEVER backed away, nor stopped, as I kept burning that head up, with what was now a Chops 36

broken pool stick, but he kept coming forward, DANG!!! Now I could see as my brothers were doing everything within their power to stop these kids. It was kind of funny as I look back now, as Moon Dog, whose right hand was messed up from a bike wreck years ago, and now had to velcro it to the throttle to ride, was throwing pool balls at them, left handed, but he was hitting us as well, LOL. I saw Rags, measuring his licks on these now punks as they walked by him. I even saw Peter hitting one kid, as Dozer was cleaning house. He wasn’t playing. Once he even picked me up like a child & sit me outside, but when he left me there, here came this young man again, and I just kept hitting him, but he wouldn’t fall, nor stop. What the hell? My son in law knew him, & the word around town the next day was he went to the ER and got 34 stitches in his head, but??? By now the floor inside was slick as ice, as the beer & blood spilt on the concrete floor was making it impossible to stand up. I saw the owner, which we all knew, have a hold of Son’s ponytail, trying to slow him down, and Son was just swinging him around the floor by his own hair. By now we knew the police was on the way, so we backed out, with those kids still advancing on us, and got out of there heading back to the clubhouse. As I laid there on our pool table, the adrenaline stopped and I was now sick at my stomach, like I was going to puke. After I got home I noticed I had a few “raspberries” on my forehead, and a knot on the back of my noggin from the 1st hit from the beer bottle. I think all B said was, “Aren’t you guys a little old for this crazy stuff?” I told her it wasn’t our fault & had to fight our way out, and the brothers could back that up. Now, I’m not going to say that I’ve never started a fight, but not this time & I had witnesses. The fighting 50’s came from the fact, there were 5 of us who had just turned 50 that year, and I later got us all medallions to put on a chain stating such. LOL I had to leave the next morning to take a load of coils to Chicago, and had a lot of time to think about the fight. Would I do it again, of course, but not against meth fueled young cats, cause they’re tough. Chops 37

Residence of John Tom Blanton at Tribbey Kentucky, Perry County. Description says Mr. Blanton works at Old King Mining Company. He and his wife live here with 4 children, two shown in photo. They have a radio, but no refrigerator and no automobile. They live about 2 miles from the nearest general store where they sometimes walk to, to get supplies. He makes $51.70 a week as a miner, and with a small vegetable garden every year and occasional livestock, they do better than some of their time. This home design is what we always called a “shotgun” house. The rooms are in a straight line through the house. The outhouses/toilets were usually built a good distance from the house as shown here. But if you had a small house lot, they were a lot closer. Note: In the 1960’s my dad was only making about $65 per week, with a bigger family, so Mr. Blanton’s $51.70 was decent pay in the 40’s.
