It seems as each business I walk into I hear this, “Oh great you still have the magazine. Whew, we thought you had sold it?” At first I thought they meant they were interested in buying, because each time it’s happened, I didn’t know the person or persons speaking with me, but nope, they were thrilled it hadn’t changed hand, which is bitter sweet. Why? Because I do want to sell it, but grateful for the fact people love it. But why? It’s early Saturday morning and I was thinking about why do folks really like CHOPS? I believe because it’s entertaining, and it gives them something to read, other than just look at the pics, which there is nothing wrong with that either, because everyone loves seeing their picture in the magazines, or I do. Especially, my good side! LOL I try to make it entertaining, by adding anything from the 70’s and on backwards. For example, if something happened in the 50’s or 60’s that brings a memory to my mind from when I was living in the 70’s I’m going to tack it on to a page here, like the pic of The Beave, in this issue. For me it’s NOT all about the bikes/bikers of the past, but things that make everyone, say, “Wow, I remember that and it was good or fun!” And as you can tell I loved the bands from that era as well. The BEST music ever! I guess my favorite music was from 1968 to 1988! ********************************************************* I DIDN’T JOIN A CLUB TO BECOME A CRIMINAL!!! Or to walk around with a chip on my shoulder, daring someone, anyone to knock it off, and they didn’t have to do with their hands, just staring at you the wrong way, “eye balling” you, was just like knocking it off. That is NOT what I signed up for, period! It was late 1981 when I was coerced, while drunk, into probating for the Iron Baron Motorcycle Club (IBMC). I was told that night that they were a family oriented club that liked to get together and Chops 7

LISTEN UP WASHINGTON! WE’VE HAD ENOUGH & SO HAS GOD! TAKE HEED TO THESE WORDS, O WICKED ONES!!!
Psalm 37: 12 The wicked plots against the just, And gnashes at him with his teeth. 13 The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming. 14 The wicked have drawn the sword And have bent their bow, To cast down the poor and needy, To slay those who are of upright conduct. 15 Their sword shall enter their own heart, And their bows shall be broken. 16 A little that a righteous man has Is better than the riches of many wicked. 17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, But the Lord upholds the righteous. 18 The Lord knows the days of the upright, And their inheritance shall be forever. 19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. 20 But the wicked shall perish; And the enemies of the Lord, Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away.

drink, and they had an addiction to riding motorcycles, everywhere. Cool, sounded like the perfect deal for me, because I had two young daughters, (one 2 and the other 1 month old), a job and responsibilities of being a home owner, but my wife had no problem with me out riding, and if she wasn’t pregnant at the time, she rode with me. Early the next morning my phone starts ringing, and I had a bad hang over. The caller screamed at me through the receiver of the old rotary type phone, “PROBATE! Get you ass over to Champ’s house now!!!” I asked why is something wrong with him, to which he replied, “Never ever question me, just do as you’re told!” Hell, I didn’t even know who this guy was, so screw that BS, and I went back to sleep. And that is pretty much what prospecting was for me for 6 months. Screaming, hollering do this do that and so on. You have to be here by 2pm, 5 States away, so that meant riding all night, and when you arrived it was just a bunch of patch holders sitting around drinking beer and bored stiff, but they wanted all prospective members there. WTH have I got into? Hey, I wanted to ride, but not like this. I mean what fun is it if you can’t see anything? You don’t know where you’re going or why you are going, etc. Shoot fire, I’d already done 2 years in the Army (7375) and I wasn’t treated this bad, even in Basic! This is not what I signed up for, but my pride kept me in it, cause I wasn’t going to be broken and become a failure. Yet as I look back, it was a terrible decision to continue on with this. It was demoralizing!!! And some members would belittle you right in front of your woman. This never happened to me, for I wouldn’t put up with it. Not that I’m a badazz, but my up bringing told me this wasn’t kosher, not one bit. Don’t mess with my woman in a bad way nor me while in her presence. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good prank as much as anybody, and don’t mind them being pulled on me as long as it’s not belittling me. Which brings me to this part! Never become as popular or more popular than the leaders who have been there the longest. You talking about jealousy and revenge, it’s unreal. I never asked to be an Chops 10
Alpha Male, but I guess I am one, and of course other Alphas have a problem with that, not all, but in the clubs I’ve been a part of, it definitely can cause conflicts, quickly. I was popular from day one, even before I got my full patch. The other Charters loved me and the fun ways I did things, just having fun, being rambunctious, making others laugh (I sometimes think I missed my true calling, being a stand up comedienne), and it pissed my Pres off. He hated it. Plus, I wouldn’t take place in some of the stupid kid games he and others wanted probates to do, like walk around naked with just your vest and boots on all day and I’m not just talking about male members but their OL’s and people who just showed up for the party. I’d tell him, “I’ll prospect for years before I do that”. Little did I know, the upper echelon liked that about me. I recall one Memorial Day weekend, were we rode to beautiful Pigeon Forge, TN (before it became super commercialized) and camped at this scenic site, right on the river. I mean it was beautiful, and we left it in better shape than we found it, other than the oil slick left on the swimming pool, LOL. Our bikes were cutting deep groves in the entrance to the camping area, so our National President told the owner to get a load of limestone rock and we would spread it out for them. There was 4 probates there, including me, and I’ve never minded pulling my weight, but when the rock got there, I was the only one spreading it??? Actually one prospect, named Biggen left and rode back to KY by himself. His parting words, was, “I’m not doing this shit!” Other chapters said their probates were busy running errands and they figured I could do it all. Now I’m talking about a 2 ton dump truck load and the driver never even tried to spread it, while dumping. And there I was, all by self trying to do the best I could. Thirty minutes in, my back was rocking out some serious pain and as I looked around, hell, no one even noticed me, so I said “F@#K THIS and I threw my shovel down and went to get a cold beer. My prez was flipping out, so I said, “Didn’t you tell me once that you’d never ask me to do something that you wouldn’t, so here. Grab a shovel & I’ll be over there in a minute or ten!” He was livid to say the least but he didn’t know what to do, as he wasn’t well liked in the club, (rich kid). Chops 11
Unbeknownst to me, all the other members were digging it and many full patches came over to help me, as they told my boss (ahem) to go sit down. Afterward we all sit down dropped a couple of Ludes & drank some beer, while my Boy pouted. I received my full patch later that night!! But he got me on the trip home, as all I had to wear was a sleeveless T-shirt & vest and the sun was cooking my white upper arms. I asked Champ if he had an extra long sleeve I could wear, by now my upper arms in those spots were blistering up, and he said no! He was packing a whore back home with him, saying she was going to be his new house mouse, even after every full patch had used her that weekend, minus 1, me, but he fail in love easily, I guess. Any ways, we stopped later in the evening, my arms now have water blisters on them from the sun burn, and this mfer pulls out a long sleeve denim shirt for this chick to wear because she was cold, my BP went off the charts! Brotherhood my azz!!! If it hadn’t been for my dear brother Will Spencer (RIP), I would have shot Champ that day. Now I am NOT a violent man, but I flipped out as we, Spence & me, were sitting behind a Kwik Pick convenient store. I lost all control of my senses, as I held that little 5 shot 32 in my hands and Spence kept saying, “It or he is not worth it brother, just let it go.” I remember shaking all over, as I was trying to listen to him but all I could see in the front of that store was that POS laughing with his new chick. Spencer finally shook me back into reality, when he mentioned my wife & children. So I put the pistol away, and just ignored the rich bastard the rest of the way home and a couple of months that followed. BTW, I think he got out of the club within the next couple of months, not for sure how long, but I was glad he was gone. Now back on subject; I didn’t join up to become a criminal!!! A couple of hours before I received my patches, an IBMC member that was contemplating patching over to a bigger 1% club, that he was now hanging with more than us, approached me and said let’s take a ride, so remove any club stuff from your appearance AND you’re gonna be riding bitch behind me, aah okay??? He never said why, Chops 12
but hum, I don’t know about this? Then a very cool member from South Carolina whispered in my ear that He, I won’t mention his name, was taking me to steal a motorcycle that he had been scouting out. It was sitting in front of an old trailer in an even older trailer park, and it would be a cinch to get. So I decided to question the guy that wanted me to go with him about our mission, of course the first thing I heard was, “Never question me!” I said, “Look, Sam has already told me what’s up, and if it’s true, count me out. I’m not about to steal that person’s Sportster, as I am sure he worked very hard to get that bike, like I did mine, (it took me years of scraping & saving to get my 1st Harley), and besides that, I DIDN’T JOIN THIS CLUB TO BECOME A CRIMINAL!!!” I don’t know if it was another test of my loyalty or what, but when I say I despise thieves and liars, I mean it, thus I DID NOT want to become either, and if I did the 1st thing, I’d have to become the 2nd. I refused, he got upset with me for a brief time but caused me no harm. An hour later I was asked to take my vest off, leave it with Champ and run to the local hardware store to pick up some bolts & nuts for Poppa Rob, our National President’s (a great guy) new Shovelhead, and while I was gone, that same chick sewed on my patches. It felt good, real good! So it was now time for more qualudes, beer and swimming in that “cement pond”, which made for a long, slow but pleasurable afternoon, but................... While I was out at the hardware store I stopped at this small mom & pop bar, it was so cool looking as it was made out of old logs, not the prefab kind but the real deal. I stopped, went in and introduced myself and asked them how business was, they replied, “Very Slow to be a holiday weekend”. I said would you like some business tonight? It’s the motorcycle club I belong to, and if you don’t mind I’d like to bring in 15 to 20 members and shoot some pool, play some music and drink a lot of beer, and if you’re afraid we may get out of hand, I assure you we “police” or own. Before I could finish, they said, “Yes, please!” So after my patch in party, I shared the above info to the group of Chops 13
about 50 brothers, and about 20 of us decided to go shoot pool, play the jute box and drink much, much beer. Man, I had a blast & this is what I thought the club life (brotherhood) was suppose to be, NOT sitting out in a barren field somewhere, bored to death, smoking reefer or popping ludes and drinking beer, where everyone has told the same stories of their past, over & over again. Shoot, I could do that at home. I wanted to get out and see the world and enjoy it, and as I said, about 20 of us did, but when we got back...... “Who gave you permission to stop at that bar and ask if we could come in and party?” I just said, “Oh well.....................you should have been there as we ALL had a blast & oh by the way, did you know Bro. Matt, Bill & others can really sing & play instruments? You just should have been there, instead of trying to monopolize that whore, that no one else wants, she’s yours!” Hot dang, steam was rolling out of his ears, as everyone that went to the little log cabin bar, agreed with me. And YES we had a blast, until we ran out of money!!! HaHaHa This is what I’m talking about when I say, never become more liked than the other Alphas. Champ wasn’t the only president that didn’t like the way I did things, which basically, was just having fun with my new (so called) brothers, but there was also Fat Bob out of TN. The president with the largest charter! He and his VP never went on a road trip with us. I can’t remember one time either making a trip, unless it was in a chase van or truck. The majority of the time, if they showed up at all, it was at the meeting place where our adventure was to begin, and many times that was in TN, just a few miles from their houses. (As we had already ridden 100 miles to get there.) It was always some excuse about their bikes weren’t up or the OL was sick or their work called, whatever it was, in 2 years I don’t remember riding with them anywhere. Poppa Rob would say, “You got all these guys on Ironhead Sportsters going, including Cochise (that really pissed Bob off, just the mention of my name) that’s leaking oil, blowing oil and sometimes hitting only on one cylinder, and still riding, but you two have newer FLH’s and can never make it? Come on guys, get real.” That statement put a bulls eye on my back for both Bob & his 2nd, Chops 14
Leonard to shoot at, and they did. I had to buy newer cases and back then your numbers on the cases had to match your State title. Since Leo was suppose to be an A+ mechanic, I hired him to split my cases and put all my stuff from the old cases into the newer ones. When I finally got word my bike was done, I was told to pick it up at Poppa Rob’s place instead of Leonard’s, I was never so hurt in my life when I spied my old Superglide in Poppa’s yard. As Byran, a new hang around & I pulled up at Poppa’s house, there laid my old Superglide laying in his yard, yes laying on it’s side. And many of my parts were missing, and the bike wouldn’t run, but at least it was legal. It was at this point, that I was through, especially if National didn’t address this. At this time I didn’t know Poppa Rob was in the hospital diagnosed with cancer & wasn’t home, and just so happens, Leonard had already turned in his patch the previous weekend. Brotherhood my ass!!! And then there was Fat Bob & his revenge! We had rode up to somewhere in Central IN, for a Pow Wow, Mountain Man Rendezvous, not sure why we went, but it rained & rained all day, all night & so own, and where we were camped, well, it was flooded. Someone messing with a probate told him to drive his small car through this big water hole that had developed, and he drowned out the engine. We all were pitching in trying to get it out, but the water was high enough it was about to fill my boots up with nasty muddy water & I said to probate, “Get out and let me try to get it going and out of the huge puddle”, as I had some common sense about these things, but no he wouldn’t let me, so I said to hell with this and went to sit down. Two weeks later Fat Bob calls a special meeting with everyone that was there that witnessed me saying f@#k it. I was being sit up by him to get an azz whipping. BTW, I was the only one from my chapter that was invited, weird. Poppa Rob was there. So Fat Bob started out on me. Criticizing everything I did. He had 10 or more from his charter, with them being in IN for what happened. I thought, I’m going to get gang rushed and beaten, but then Poppa asked to hear my side. Basically, I just said hey, “I’m a man, not a child with childish ways, and I could have taken care of that situation, BUT I wasn’t about to get out in knee deep water while someone who had never driven, Chops 15
(he had just got of the pen & had no license or even knew how to drive), tells me repeatedly, “I got it. I got it.” So I went and sit down, because I had a long ride home, and I did not want to ride with my whole body caked in mud because of some dumb azz kid.” So after hearing what I had to say, it was like everyone there turned on Fat Bob! They wanted to know if he HAD OF ridden up there with them, would he have done it? Even his own chapter ran over him, as they were fed up with their boss, who never rode. I know in my heart he had planned on beating me with his Nunchuks or whatever they are called. That was his MO! And he brought plenty of back up, about 12 to 1, but it backfired, because I just told the truth. I remember Billy being there, and him really getting pissed at FB, and though Billy was small in stature, he’d mess you up. His skill back then was an 8” bowie knife. FB rode home by himself with his tail tucked between his legs, as his ego was deflated. The sad thing was, I didn’t want to see him leave or anything bad happen to him, right the opposite of what his will was for me. I’ve never ever wanted to have enemies or even one person that doesn’t/didn’t like me. As I rode home that night, alone, about 60 miles on all back roads, many things were rolling through my mind, and the biggest one was, what am I doing? Where is the true brotherhood I’ve heard about? What happened to your brother is always right, even when he’s wrong thing? It felt good to be backed up by those men, but just like with most of our officials of today, I was guilty until proven innocent. I have experienced so much of this in my life, even today, and it’s gotten very, very old!!! Over the years of living here, it’s not much different from back then, I have had to defend myself over & over for BS that was lies or blown out of preportions. Today, I just blow it off, as many & I mean many people will believe and want to believe anything negative told about me or on me. Is it because I’m an Alpha, because I am liked, popular & they just don’t like that or me? The majority of BROTHERHOOD IS DEAD!!! Many times you can count on your friends or even acquaintances more that your bros. When I really need some help, without being judged, I call a friend or maybe on 1 or 2 brothers.

Cheyenne Dog Soldier, 1840.
The Dog Soldiers were the Cheyenne Elite, they formed their own bands within the Cheyenne Nation, they often gave their own lives to protect their women and children, they were very much feared by the white Soldiers, and their Native American Foes, Pawnee, Ute, to name but a few, however, they where honoured Allies of the Lakota Sioux, and the Arapahoe’s, Comanche’s and Kiowa’s, the mention of the words “Cheyenne Dog Soldier”, put Fear into the most hardest of white Soldiers, they are still the most famous warrior society on Earth today.

Jay Silverheels (born Harold Jay Smith; May 26, 1912 – March 5, 1980) was an Indigenous Canadian actor and athlete. He was well known for his role as Tonto, the Native American companion of the Lone Ranger in the American Western television series The Lone Ranger. Jay was born on Canada’s Six Nation’s Reserve and was one of 10 children. He was a star lacrosse player and a boxer before he entered films as a stuntman in 1938. He worked in a number of films through the 1940s
Chops 23
before gaining notice as the Osceola brother in a Humphrey Bogart film Key Largo (1948). Most of Silverheels’ roles consisted of bit parts as an Indian character. In 1949, he worked in the movie The Cowboy and the Indians (1949) with another “B movie” actor Clayton Moore. Later that year, Silverheels was hired to play the faithful Indian companion, Tonto, in the TV series The Lone Ranger (1949) series, which brought him the fame that his motion picture career never did. Silverheels recreated the role of Tonto in two big-screen color movies with Moore,The Lone Ranger (1956) and The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold (1958). After the TV series ended in 1957, Silverheels could not escape the typecasting of Tonto. He would continue to appear in an occasional film and television show but became a spokesperson to improve the portrayal of Indians in the media. A member of the Mohawk tribe of Canada’s Six Nations Reserve, Silverheels excelled at wrestling, horse racing, football, boxing, and hockey, and became a renowned lacrosse player. With the help of actor Joe E. Brown, Silverheels obtained work as a stuntman and extra in Hollywood films. Following military service in World War II, Silverheels returned to film and landed small, often stereotypical roles as Indian warriors in Westerns. John Huston cast him as one of the fugitive Osceola brothers in Key Largo (1948), and Silverheels followed with the two roles that would define his career, Tonto and the Apache leader Geronimo, whom he would play several times beginning with the Western classic Broken Arrow (1950). Silverheels’ enormous fame as Tonto overshadowed everything else, although it did not prevent him from playing other prominent roles. Even after completing The Lone Ranger (1949) series, Silverheels continued to reprise Tonto for commercials, comic guest spots, and spoofs. Silverheels became an outspoken activist for Indian rights and a respected teacher within the Indian acting community. He appeared on talk and variety shows performing his own poetry. In later years, he began a second career as a harness racer. His health failed in the 1970s, and he died of a stroke in 1980, a beloved figure to the Baby Boom generation America. His son, Jay Silverheels Jr. has acted in television as well.

Did you know? Back in the early days of his career, Sylvester Stallone was so broke he ended up homeless and unable to buy food. At his lowest point, he realized he had no option but to sell his beloved dog and best friend, Butkus, whom he simply couldn’t afford to feed. After selling Butkus to a stranger for $25, he walked away crying. Just two weeks later, Stallone saw a boxing match between Mohammed Ali and Chuck Wepner. It inspired him so much, he wrote the script for Rocky. As he started approaching movie studios, he had one request: he would star in the movie. With offers for as much as $350,000, Stallone still refused until they agreed for him to play the lead. But the compromise came at a cost, with Stallone instead receiving just $35,000 for his script. The first thing the actor did when he received the money was return to the liquor store where he had last seen Butkus. After standing there for three days, he saw the man who had purchased his dog approaching and begged to buy his dog back. It would cost him $15,000, but it was worth every cent to Stallone. Butkus would appear in the film with his owner. Rocky went on to be the highest grossing film of 1976 and won three Oscars. It also propelled Stallone to fame.

Was 1971, just out of the active Army. Got a 6 month dorp from active Army, traded for a years active Army Reserve in South Boston. It was good to be home, but everything was different. And I was different too. Went back to the old job at the transmission shop, dated the same girlfriend, and tried to pick up my life where I had left it before. But things had changed, things at the shop were different. After a fire had gutted the place, different mechanics were working there now, and they didn’t really accept my return, and the boss whom I’d always liked had become greedy and corrupt. I got quickly tired of fighting the varnished transmission oil, then the bottom man again, and the Italian North End Mafia that was slowly killing the business. Things with the first love of my life had changed, there was pressure to marry, and settle down, but I wanted some space, some freedom, and to ride and build motorcycles, and be a biker. She didn’t dig that at all. I tried to find some of my old buds, some were still around, most were veterans themselves and were as lost as I was trying to catch up with the life we lost thru the military. Some rode, the big hit bike was the Honda 450, it was fast, dependable, and would stay with a 650 Triumph. I never had one but I did have a junky 61 Royal Enfield Interceptor, (missing some parts), struts to lower it and a bicycle seat. Ape Hangers and open megaphone exhaust. I moved out of my parents house, mostly because I was coming home late at night, drunk and disorderly. My dad wouldn’t have it, and I respected that. So after some nights sleeping in my 61 Ford, I hooked up with a tall thin wispy hippie chick, named Dot, in a tiny trailer in a run down court. She had the cutest overbite, was somewhat disabled, and had a job with the new computer key punch task of parts inventory for a car distributor, she made pretty decent money. We got along, drank heavily, and it worked for awhile. I quit the Trans shop and drove a big moving van for a high school pal who inherited his father’s........Pg. 50 Chops 48

business. And we drank, she did pot, and pills, and rode on the back of the Enfield, usually falling asleep back there. Even fell off once. It was sort of cool, I was still in the reserve, a supply company, as a driver, but was bucking the Army bullshit of haircuts and sideburns. Got an Article 15, and busted to E3. I was done with that. Alcohol and a bad attitude, scrapping and just being a little asshole, was how I was. One night Dot went out for pizza & more beer, and never returned. Seems she was in a fatal head on collision, with a drunk driver. And the drunk driver was her. It was a fatal. Things sucked and needed to change. She didn’t have much family, and no one came to get any of her stuff. I threw it all out in a rage and bought some cheap used stuff, some off the trash truck I was driving then. I just couldn’t stand her things there, and she wasn’t. I blamed myself for letting her go out after pizza & beer, and felt real grief for the first time in my life. So yeah I kept drinking, for a few....Pg. 52 Chops 50

weeks, but heavier stuff, Guinness Stout, and Red Cap Ale, Colt 45. I was a working Alcoholic, and I knew it. Fall came, I sold the Enfield, and bought a 63 Panhead, ex police bike. It needed work, and I thought it would keep me busy, out of the bars and broke, which it did. I had a new dream of a chopped Pan. with a Sportster front end, sort of like the Super Glide I couldn’t afford. But as it worked out, I rode it stock, and spent my money fixing it mechanically. Rode it some and knew I couldn’t handle it drinking. So I slowed my drinking. The more I stopped my drinking the better life got, I went back to the transmission shop and made amends with the boss and the owner. I moved back home, had a long talk with my wonderful parents, and spent New Years 1973 stone sober playing Chinese Checkers with my dear mother. ‘73 was a better year. ~ Ken Bradway

*************** I Found This On The Internet, BUT Not Sure It’s Accurate??? HILLBILLY: The word originated Scots-Irish / Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland / Ulster who moved into the Appalachian Mountains in the 1700s. Billy/Billies was a term meaning “brother, friend or comrade. “Billy Boys” was the term used refering to Ulster Protestants who supported “William of Orange” (aka Billy) in invading England. They were also known to wear red sashes around their necks (coining the term Rednecks) and once the Scots-Irish migrated in droves to the US, they quickly moved into the mountains and hills of Appalachia. The “Billys”, now were comrades of the hills/mountains, and therefore became known as Hillbillies. True Or Not, I Don’t Know??? Cochise Chops 53

No one wants to go risk their lives in a war, but for some, Vietnam wasn’t optional. For this soldier, he felt that “war is Hell”, and he likely wasn’t alone in that feeling. Fortunate Son Creedence Clearwater Revival

The sergeant in the image is Jeremiah Purdie. Despite sustaining head injuries and toughing out the pain, he is still focused on helping his friend. The friend has his legs wounded and treated but lies in the filthy mud that was inescapable there. Magazines like this one were popular because most men hadn’t seen an American woman since they left home. Many had girlfriends or even wives at home and they were desperate to keep the memories alive.
