Chopper Time was again “over the top”!!!

I believe there was 170 bikes registered and probably another 4 to 500 bikes that came & went during the day. Everyone seemed to have a great time & those who were chosen to receive an award were extremely happy, AND whether immediately or down the road our local veterans will reap the benefits of those who put their bikes in the show, but also from those who purchased a cold drink, as every penny went to them, through the “Veteran’s Support Group”. I know Mike, the one who we work through and with in this well oiled group of wonderful people, and Willie would want me to say a BIG THANK YOU, for showing up and giving back to those who gave so much for our great nation. By the way, several of these men showed up as well, and became the highlight of the day. God Bless Them And The United States Of America, AMEN!!!

A few other events that I enjoyed were OB’s 80th birthday get together, that brother sure doesn’t look 80, but what a mounumentous time.

Again, Happy Birthday OB! Sons Of Speed put on by Choppers Inc., and run at NSB Speedway was a very exciting time, as the HOT 45 Class was really rocking this year. Of course there were a couple of wrecks, with one involving Josh Owens of the Moonshiner’s TV series. Josh is just now (3/20/23) starting to move a round a bit, but still need our pryaers.

Rossmeyers Racing was a highlight for many of us locals, as Shelly rode, with the aid of her crew Rebel Glover, Chuck Kennedy & Barry Wardlaw. She finished 2nd overall, but the 1st place finisher was a polished vet, so 2nd place was a HUGE WIN for the Rossmeyer crew.

Prior to Bike Week, Tony and the girls had the Boat Bar Bike Week Kick Off Party on the 26th of Feb. Bianca, Sugar Baby, Drew & myself, with several friends went down to Port Orange to.....Page 10 Chops 7

Me Trying To Answering Questions From Others Why not more pics of the beach & skate boarders? Surfing and skating go together with bikes?

I have put in some bikes on the beach before and maybe a couple of pics of guys skate boarding. I actually had a pic on the cover of a surfer arriving at the beach on his bike, but not many bikers visit the beach. I don’t know why, because I love it, yet I haven’t been myself in a couple of years.

As far as skateboards, it just wasn’t a thing in my generation, though I remember seeing them in the early 70’s. I tried going down a long hill once, and as I got up speed, I realized, I had NO BRAKES and jumped off. Never got on one again, and this was, I believe 1975.

Here’s a hard one! Cochise, why is it that club people don’t like to be called a gang? I mean they have the same MO, with protecting their territory, shooting one group over being in/on the wrong block, town or state. If they are legal, as they say, then why does it matter? With gangs, we know they protect their turf because of drug sales, etc., but if legal, why?

My first inclination was to pass the buck, and tell this person to contact a local club member and ask him, as I am not a member of any club.

But I’ll start out with the thing about being called a gang. That word conjures up bad things in the minds of Joe Citizen, and club members do not want to be identified with street gangs or give the average Joe any reason to associate the two.

You’re question about territory is hard for me to answer without making some mad, (by speculating or assuming), and I do not want any club people upset with me, so I pass the buck on this one, and really I don’t recommend walking up to just any member and asking him about why they are so protective of the area in which they live.

I am not for sure how bike clubs got to the point of why they despise other clubs. I may ask some OG’s about this one or maybe a friend, as I would like to know myself, when the first disagreement.......Page 13 Chops 11

I’ve taken a little heat from some who are gigging me over my shirt that I sell, “Ride It Like YOU Can Fix It” because Marcus, pictured above put my FLH together, I have never claimed to be a “Builder”, as I am a “Rider”, however, I do know how to fix my bikes, when it’s NOT above my learning or having the correct tools, so there, I come clean to you all. occurred among them, and why it’s still going on in some areas. I am not 100% sure if these skirmishes have gotten better or worse over the years, but to me it appears as in most cities today, you have more than one 1%er club in it and a few smaller clubs to, meaning (hopefully) the wars have cooled down some, because, if my memory serves me correctly, and many times it doesn’t, 40 or 50 years ago, this wouldn’t have flown. Good luck on finding the correct answer.

Why is it when I see bikers riding on I-95, that most are all spread out, driving in the passing lane, yet others, though in the same lanes, stay close together? What’s the difference?

I’ve wrote on this before, but when you see a group of riders that are riding tight and fast, most likely it’s a club. These men do not mess around when traveling. I personally have rode in this tight packs, rolling at 90 MPH and wheel to wheel and handle bar to handle bar, both in clubs and with friends that I’ve ridden with for years. This is how I was taught to roll, and I still do it.

As far as motorcycle enthusiasts, and the way they get down the interstate, more than likely, they are nervous/scared, riding above their means or just haven’t been taught any difference. A car will bust into a pack of strung out riders, IF they are holding up traffic, thus causing wrecks, even death. If you feel uncomfortable riding in a pack, ask someone where the final destination is, and slow down GET OUT OF the passing lanes, and ride within your learning and means.

Do you call Bianca your Ole Lady? Yes, sometimes, and even though some other women don’t understand this “term of endearment”. she does. It means she is mine, I love her, so hands off.

Let me say here, that of all the people I’ve met and partied with, club guys were always the most respectful of my women. I’ve only one instance of a patch holder disrespecting my wife and ultimately me.

Of course I was a visitor and way outnumbered, but I stood my ground and later left, as this cat wasn’t letting up. The next day the National Prez called me and asked why I left so soon, though I told him we were leaving, so I shared with him about one of his brothers trying to pat B’s azz, the member was disciplined and I was invited back, butt................

As you now by now The Boot Hill on Main St. is celebrating 50 years as the Boot! I looked up so many rumors about this business and this building, I first learned the building started out as a barbershop, on the left side, a bar in the center room and a church on the right, yes a church.

Perfect for being across the street from the cemetery.

I’ve also seen pics of a lawyers office on the right hand side and I believe an insurance office on one side or the other, but as far as I can tell, the middle section has always been a bar. Today the left side is the T-Shirt store, and the bar has poured over to the right side and outside.

I first visited this place either in 1979 or 81, not for sure and it was very intimidating back then, but today it’s just a great “safe” place to sit, drink a cold drink & talk to friends! Look for more pics & stories in future issues!!!

The Story Of The Harley-Davidson Softail Frame.

Introduced in June 1983 as the 1984 Harley-Davidson FXST Softail, the Softail frame was not designed by the Milwaukee factory. It is the creation of Bill Davis, a Harley enthusiast and engineer from St Louis, Missouri. In 1974 and 1975 Davis worked in his garage on the concept of a rear suspension frame where a swingarm was pivoting at the bottom sprung by a top spring shock absorber placed under the seat. He built a first prototype using his own 1972 Harley Super Glide as the base. After patenting his cantilever design swingarm frame he succeeded in meeting with Willie G. Davidson in August 1976. The story says that Davidson he was very impressed by Davis’s new frame concept and replied 6 months later saying that although the company would not use the new design, it was still interested.

Disappointed, Davis continued to improve his design and got the idea

to switch his swingarm pivoting point with the shock under the frame and no more at the top, the big advantage being now to be able to place the traditional Harley oil tank under the seat. Then he went the independent route, starting with partners his own company “Road Works” to produce and market his frame design under the name of “Sub Shock”. The partnership collapsed and Harley executive Jeff Bleustein – who later became the company President & CEO – immediately contacted Davis and made him an offer to sell to H-D all his patents, prototypes, jigs and tooling.

The deal was signed in January 1982. Nobody knows, except Davis and Harley, what was the exact financial amount of the transaction, but it always has been rumored as being quite low. The frame required special shocks because working in extension, not in compression, like usually.

Launched in 1984, the first Softail model was a great success, offering a chassis close to the lines of a hardtail frame with the benefit of comfort provided by the rear suspension. The Softail line is one Harley’s best selling and redefined the cruiser genre. Many companies use the Softail style frame, at least on some of their models, from Honda to Kawasaki to Yamaha to Victory. ~ CJ Kelly

Even on his deathbed, Dennis Hopper refused to meet Peter Fonda and banned him from his funeral. Fonda visited the chapel, but Hopper’s family prevented him from entering. Here are some intriguing facts about Peter Fonda. You may be wondering, why did Hopper hate Fonda so much? Well, from what we heard from Fonda in 2014, the reasons are remarkably petty. Fonda believes that Hopper detested him because he thought he didn’t receive due payment and recognition for Easy Rider. While we don’t know how true those claims are, Fonda seems to think that Hopper was too caught up in his own megalomania. If we study his angry and paranoid behavior on set, it does seem to add up. As a megalomaniac, he probably wanted a lot more credit and attention on himself. Many people tend to let go of all hard feelings and grudges as they near death. But Hopper wasn’t one of those people. In fact, in his last moments, he was as adamant about cutting off Fonda as he had ever been. You might be shocked to know that he banned Fonda and his Easy Rider collaborators from his funeral.

Talk about being bitter! Fonda, who still didn’t see any reason to stay back, visited the chapel anyway. Unfortunately, he was refused entry

Hopper’s Unstable Antics While Peter Fonda considered Dennis Hopper a great friend, partner, and confidante, Hopper wasn’t the most stable person to work with.

Anyone on the set of Easy Rider would agree that he was a nightmare to work with. From screaming at everyone to spreading his anger and paranoia around, Hopper pushed countless people away from the production. Many people even secretly recorded Hopper’s meltdowns and tirades to gather proof against the director. Despite all that, Fonda stuck around and finished what they had started together.

If you’ve ever had a glimpse of films like Easy Rider or Cannonball Run, you must know that Fonda makes an incredible biker. He settled so well in these roles because he was crazy about motorcycles. He didn’t have to fake the enthusiasm of riding his cool bikes into the sunset.

Fonda has admitted to his love and passion for motorcycles on several occasions. Visiting his social media pages will give you a good idea of how serious he was about this obsession. Fonda is even included in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame and was an avid collector of vintage bikes. If you’ve seen Easy Rider you probably remember Fonda’s unforgettable biker persona. In the movie, the actor can be seen wearing the American Flag on his jacket and even has one plastered on the gas tank.

Since Fonda loved riding motorbikes in real life as well, he decided to take his outfit for a spin. He rode around LA looking like his character for one whole week to make everything look more worn out and real.

During these rides, he was stopped by police multiple times as they found his use of the American flag to be quite suspicious.

The Biker Revolution In 1966, Fonda starred in one of his first movies, The Wild Angels. In the late 60s, rebellion was all the rage due to the growing counterculture movement and this film was the perfect answer. The movie was directed by the legendary 60s filmmaker Roger Corman. Staying true to his love for motorcycles, Fonda plays a biker from the Hells Angels biker gang. This was the movie that launched Fonda’s career. The film was also one of the few productions that pioneered the biker film genre in Hollywood. Roger Corman had initially selected George Chakiris and Fonda to star in The Wild Angels. Unfortunately, Chakiris was hiding an embarrassing secret that would destroy his chances of keeping the role. It stands to reason that a biker film would require some serious biking skills. Unfortunately, Chakiris had failed to mention that he couldn’t ride a motorcycle to save his life. The producers eventually had to transfer his role to Fonda. They hired another actor Bruce Dern to take up Fonda’s place. In the end, the casting worked out pretty well for the movie.

Substances on Set

We’ve already mentioned how Peter Fonda was no stranger to recreational substances. Back in the 60s, the hippie movement had made people more open to the idea of psychedelics. As a part of that generation, Fonda didn’t shy away from such activities, and neither did he hide them from the public. In one scene featuring Fonda, Jack Nicholson, and Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider, the three men share a joint. You might be surprised to know that it was the real deal. In fact, Nicholson’s monologue during that scene was genuinely performed under the influence. It’s not easy to maintain your composure let alone recite full dialogues after a few hits from certain substances. But Nicholson made it look too easy. Cast and crew from the set were astonished at how focused Jack Nicholson could be under the influence of substances.

If the monologue scene is anything to go by, Nicholson was a master at his craft even then. He happened to be one of the only actors who managed to remember the script perfectly despite being high. Others on set had to improvise their lines on the spot.

Anyone as obsessed with motorcycles as Fonda has to have an affinity for danger. Zooming along on bikes isn’t the tamest hobby but Fonda was prepared for the risks and consequences. As it turns out, he broke his back on two separate occasions while riding. A back injury is no joke but Fonda never stopped riding his prized bikes until the very end of his life. Even in his old age, he prided his motorcycles collection and loved going on rides with his friends. It seems like Fonda had a love for danger even in his adolescence because he was only six years old when he broke his back for the first time.

Wrong Side of the Law We’ve already talked about how Fonda was openly involved in the hippie movement of the 60s. Being on the wrong side of the law came with the territory. In 1966, Fonda took part in the Sunset Strip curfew riots with his friend Jack Nicholson. Residents weren’t too happy about all the hippies that crowded the Sunset Strip. The city acted on these demands and imposed strict curfews on all the young people.

This resulted in mass outrage and protests by the hippies who wanted to preserve their place. Fonda was even handcuffed and arrested during the protests.

Not for Amateurs We’ve already established that Fonda was a thrill seeker and an experienced rider. In Easy Rider, he took it to the next level by riding a stretched and raked bike with apehanger handlebars. This unstable and dangerous bike is said to be for the most experienced riders only. In one of the scenes, Jack Nicholson had to ride on the back with Fonda. It was so hard to balance on the bike that Nicholson failed and ended up squeezing his knees. This resulted in a terrible accident that caused Fonda to break a rib.

Improvisation at Its Finest The set of Easy Rider was infamous for preferring improvisation over sticking to a certain script. It’s reported that Hopper and Fonda didn’t even finish writing the entire screenplay. They all just came up with the dialogues as they went. The film didn’t even have a proper crew as the director-duo preferred to hire random people from the street. This disorganized style of filming did end up working for the movie in the end. The improvisation made it all the more genuine and realistic.

I know many people despise Fonda over his statement about our President’s son, and I was vehemently opposed to his remarks, but history is history. Fonda & Hopper were in the right place at the right time to make one of the most iconic movies every, and the most iconic biker movie ever, as I haven’t found another one that even comes close to it.

I wish “they” had done a remake of Easy Riders, perhaps 25 years afterward, but it never happened and never will now. I know someone made a terrible show about the return of the “riders” back to California, but......................
