cochisechops@yahoo.com or (386) 690-6270 This is for my friend, or I think he is HaHaHa, Daytona Red Gayler, an iconic biker and god of Panhead motorcycles and all the ins & outs of refurbishing, repairing and riding the chit out of them. No one will argue the point that Red knows everything about the Harley motorcycles built from 1948 up to 1965!!! Here the other day at the Shovelhead Night, he said, “You don’t even know what FLH means!” Yes I did & I didn’t. I knew what the “F” & “H” stood for but not the “L”!!! So I came home and looked it up. The “F” equates to Overhead Valve-“Big Twin”. I just knew (to me) the “F” was a big twin engine! The “L” means Wide Front Tire and Hydra Glide Style Front Forks! The “H” then stands for what? Highway / Touring, of course! I am assuming they are making these comparisons between the “Lighter” Sportster, oh by the way XL, which are the call letters for the Sporty models, well the XL stands for “Extra Light”! What about the Big Twins In A lighter chassis like Dynas & Low Riders, oh & the Superglides, as well. Check this out, they’re FX’s and FX stands for, are you ready? “Factory Experimental” This combination was referred to as the FX chassis, where “FX” meant “Factory Experimental”, The drivetrain and engine accessories were from the FLH, the front headlights and brakes were from the XLH. This use of a mixture of FL and XL parts has also been used to explain the FX designation. KOOL!!! >>>>Go To Page 61

God’s Corner Luke 2:6-14 says, While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no rooms available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Happy Birthday Jesus Christ!!!

Tom Fugle!!! Legendary Biker, Chopper Builder AND Rider, One Of The Founders & Undisputed President Of The El Forasteros M/C (As Reported In His Biography), Artist & Just One Cool MFer!!! Born Jan.10,1941, Passed On December 18, 2016!!! A True Chopper Man!!!
This was taken from Tom’s IG called The Fugile Files: If you wanted to find one photo that captures the essence of Tom... this just might be the one. Taken around 1971, this photo features Tom aboard Only One Love (never any foot pegs) cruising down the open road. The custom panhead chopper, the handmade leather on his wrist and the ragged club colors on his back. All things he loved and all captured in one great photo. Tom’s motto was , “Ride Choppers Or F@#k Off!!!” And he lived by those words up till the very end. By the way, you can not ride with the El Forasteros M/C if you don’t own and ride a real Chopper. I love it!!! Most riders who oppose Choppers, for whaever reason, usually do because they can’t or maybe just whinners that really don’t like the “other” old school way of life & stick to their FLH’s, & that’s ok!! But don’t judge them all~ Cochise

THREE DOG NIGHT - JOY TO THE WORLD Re Remembering Tommy Caldwell on this date of his birth in Nov. 9, 1949. Just a little info on him Marshall Tucker Band! Tommy’s death after an April 1980 car accident didn’t end the Marshall Tucker Band, but it changed things forever – in particular for his older brother Toy Caldwell. The pair had been playing music together since Tommy was 7 and Toy was 9. The Toy Factory, led by the elder Caldwell, became the southern-rocking Marshall Tucker Band when Tommy joined as bassist in 1972. They took their name from a hometown piano tuner in the cotton-mill city of Spartanburg, S.C., and set about recording five gold-selling albums (including four in a row starting in 1973) and the platinum smash Carolina Dreams before the end of the ‘70s. Then tragedy struck. The Marshall Tucker Band had just returned home from a concert they recorded for broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour when Tommy Caldwell’s Land Cruiser clipped a parked 1965 Ford Galaxy on April 22, 1980, in Spartanburg. Tommy’s Jeep, modified for off-road driving with oversized tires, flipped onto its side – and Caldwell suffered a head injury that would ultimately prove fatal. “It was just a freak accident,” Moon Mullins, a crew member for the band, said later. The owner of the Galaxy, who was in the car but uninjured when Caldwell struck him, was charged with improper parking the next day. Caldwell died on April 28, 1980, after lingering in critical condition at Spartanburg General Hospital for almost a week. Franklin Wilkie, a former bassist in Toy Caldwell’s pre-Marshall Tucker group, took over for Tommy – but the band never regained its commercial momentum. Tenth, the final album to feature Tommy Caldwell, was their last Top 40 album.

Toy Caldwell was hit particularly hard, having endured another brother’s death in a traffic accident just one month before Tommy’s. By 1984, he’d left the Marshall Tucker Band, creating a huge hole as the group lost its lead guitarist, vocalist on “Can’t You See” and principal songwriter. Toy Caldwell died in 1993, after too much cocaine stopped his heart. “Since Tommy’s death, he was there in body only,” Toy Caldwell’s wife Abbie said in 1998. “In hindsight, Toy kept an awful lot inside of him. I cannot imagine the pain he was in after his brothers’ deaths. ... Toy put up a good front for the others, but now I know he had to be torn apart inside.” Doug Gray, who sang the group’s No. 14 hit “Heard It in a Love Song,” carries on with the Marshall Tucker Band these days. Rhythm guitarist George McCorkle died in 2007, leaving Gray as the only member from the classic era defined by the Caldwells. Tommy Caldwell spoke to that lasting bond, as musicians and as brothers, in 1978. “You won’t find me in another band when this one’s over,” Tommy said after the release of the aptly titled Together Forever. “You’ll find me back in the country in South Carolina. Me and my brother have been playing together forever and, when that’s over, we’re going home. If you heard it, then you were fortunate enough to catch it. If you didn’t? Well, there won’t be another one, man.”

SMOKE ON THE WATER............ ...... On Nov. 7, 1972, DEEP PURPLE’s sixth studio album ‘Machine Head’ went Gold.
May 1972 for a further week.
Machine Head reached number one on the UK Albums Chart within seven days of its release, remaining there for two weeks before returning in
In the US, during its initial release in 1972, the album reached number 34; the album then peaked at number 7 in 1973 when “Smoke on the Water” became a hit, and Machine Head remained on the Billboard charts for over two years. NOTE: From the album, the classic single SMOKE ON THE WATER. I’ve sharpened the picture and improved the color of the original live film. First released on their 1972 album Machine Head, the song was not released as a single until a year later. The band members have said that they did not expect the song to be a hit, but the single reached number 4 on the Billboard pop singles chart in the United States during the summer of 1973 and it propelled the album to the top 10 more than a year after its release. However, by this time, Deep Purple had another album out (Who Do We Think We Are) and the Mark II lineup that recorded the song had broken apart, with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover leaving the band. The song was ranked number 434 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. ‘Smoke on the water’ took inspiration from a fire in the Casino at Montreux, Switzerland on December 4, 1971. The band was going to start Chops 52
recording their Machine Head album there right after a Frank Zappa concert, but someone fired a flare gun at the ceiling during Zappa’s show, which set the place on fire. Deep Purple was in the audience for the show, and lead singer Ian Gillan recalls two flares being shot by someone sitting behind him that landed in the top corner of the building and quickly set it ablaze. Zappa stopped the show and helped ensure an orderly exit. Deep Purple watched the blaze from a nearby restaurant, and when the fire died down, a layer of smoke had covered Lake Geneva, which the casino overlooked. This image gave bass player Roger Glover the idea for a song title: “Smoke On The Water,” and Gillan wrote the lyric about their saga recording the Machine Head album. The band was relocated to the Grand Hotel in Montreux, where they recorded the album using the Rolling Stones’ mobile studio. They needed one more song, so they put together “Smoke On The Water” using Gillan’s lyric and the riff guitarist Ritchie Blackmore came up with. The result was a song telling the story of these strange events just days after they happened - the recording sessions took place from December 6-21. “We set the gear up in the hallways and the corridors of the hotel, and the Rolling Stones’ mobile truck was out back with very long cables coming up through the windows,” explained Ian Gillan. “We tried to re-create an atmosphere in a technical sense the best we could. And when we went to write the lyrics, because we were short on material, we thought it was an ‘add-on track.’ It was just a last-minute panic. “So, the riff and backing track had been recorded on the first day as a kind of soundcheck. There were no lyrics. The engineer told us on the last day, ‘Man, we’re several minutes short for an album.’ So, we dug it out, and Roger and I wrote a biographical account of the making of the record: ‘We all came out to Montreux...’” The session where they put down the backing track took place at a Chops 53
dance club in Montreux called the Pavilion, where they tried to record after the casino burned down. The “Smoke On The Water” track was all they accomplished there because locals complained about the noise and police shut them down. The rest of the album, and the “Smoke On The Water” vocal, was recorded at the Grand Hotel. Frank Zappa, who is mentioned in the lyrics, lost all his equipment in the fire. He then broke his leg a few days later when a fan pulled him into the crowd at a show in England. This prompted Ian Gillan to say “Break a leg, Frank,” into the microphone after recording this for a BBC special in 1972.

Burton Cummings (Front Man For The Guess Who) Burton Lorne Cummings OC OM (born December 31, 1947) is a Canadian musician, singer, and songwriter. He is best known for leading The Guess Who during that band’s most successful period from 1965 to 1975, and for a lengthy solo career. Cummings has been inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has been cited as one of the most influential performers in Canadian rock music. He has also been named as an officer of the Order of Canada and Order of Manitoba. The Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg is named in his honour. (Burton was John Lennons favorite singer!!!) Cummings was born and raised in Winnipeg by his mother and maternal grandparents, after his father left the family during his infancy. He attended St. John’s High School but dropped out at age 17 to pursue a career in music; the school granted him an honorary diploma in 2010. In 1964 Cummings joined local R&B band the Deverons (not to be confused with an American group called the Devrons) on piano and vocals. The Deverons released two singles locally in Winnipeg. In early 1966, shortly after his 18th birthday, Cummings joined another regionally successful band, Chad Allan & The Expressions, to replace departed keyboardist Bob Ashley. Cummings also took on lead vocal duties in conjunction with group leader Chad Allan. This group had been subjected to a record company publicity stunt in which their 1965 hit single “Shakin’ All Over” was released anonymously with the message “Guess Who?” to trick listeners into thinking it was by a famous British Invasion band. Disc jockeys announced the single as being by someone called “Guess Who?”, forcing the group to accept the nickname; their latest releases had been issued under the name Chad Allan & The Expressions with “Guess Who?” displayed Chops 56
We have a new shop in town, one that is sitting up a Machine Shop, to do engine work & repair. Ken Is trying hard to get established here in our area, and we always have room for a good machinist, so give him a call. prominently on the covers. With The Guess Who Just a few months after Cummings joined Chad Allan & The Expressions, Allan left his namesake band, leaving Cummings as the sole singer. The band’s name was changed to simply The Guess Who, with Cummings becoming one of the band’s primary songwriters in conjunction with guitarist Randy Bachman. Their first album under this name was It’s Time in the summer of 1966. The band became internationally successful upon the release of their album American Woman in 1970, which reached the top ten in several countries and made The Guess Who the first Canadian band to achieve a number one single in the United States.Bachman then left The Guess Who, and Cummings continued to lead the band through several more internationally successful albums. Cummings and drummer Garry Peterson were the only consistent members of the band during this era. Cummings disbanded The Guess Who in 1975 due to songwriting disagreements with guitarist Dominic Troiano. Chops 57

So in 1971 the Harley Davidson Super Glide FX was born. (I had a 1973 SG)! Spawning many FX models like, the FXB which was the first Harley-Davidson with both primary and secondary belt drives, and it joined the list of successful “factory custom” Big Twins of the 1970s: the FX (1971), FXE (electric start, 1974), FXS Low Rider (1977) and FXEF “Fat Bob” (1979). These models all bore Willie G.’s personal ideas for a totally revamped HD factory bike. (Side Note) One bike is the Sturgis FXB Low Rider. It wasn’t exactly new in 1981; in fact, it was introduced in ‘80 as a nod to the annual Black Hills rally. ********** I wasn’t planning on taking up “my” page for all this great info, but anyways, I did & I hope you enjoyed it or appreciated it! There are a few pics of it in here, but I didn’t get any picks of the bikes, as I was too busy talking. The 3 Knuckleheads there were very kool, as were so many beautiful (original) Panheads & Shovelheads, this is some hard judging. But, for me, Wino’s was spot on, a 1983 FXDG or a Disc Glide! They were only a few made in ‘83, from what I understand. Anyways, there were a few truly stock Shovelheads there, like Royce’s ‘82 FLT & Marshall’s FX. There were others, but I can’t remember now. And the Panhead’s were all off the chain! Thanks OB’s for doing this show!!! ~ Cochise Since We Had Great Success With The 2022 Poster/Calendar, We’re Now Doing The ‘23, Want In?
