cochisechops@yahoo.com or (386) 690-6270 Here we go again! Had to go in for a Heart Cath a couple of weeks ago, and the Doc found some NOT so cool stuff while looking around. He fixed back up my right side of my heart, but I have to go back in 2 weeks for the other side. He put in 3 more stents, but because they can only inject so much of the dye they put in me at one time, as it destroys the kidneys, is why I have to go back. He also found something that all the other heart docs missed, so that should help me out some, as the agina was getting bad. I’m ready to get to feeling better. But bottomline, as he visited me the next day while I was in the hospital, is that the Psoriatic Arthritis is what’s damaging my vessels. The funny thing was, as I got a break down of the payments, I saw were the cardiologist that told me in 2010 that I only had a year to live, was the one who read my stress tests! I sure hope he rcognized my name. Be assured the next time I see him, I will remind him, LOL. Truth is, I believe he told me that, because I didn’t have any insurance and he didn’t want to have to write the cost off anymore, so he wrote me off!!! BUT SURPRISE!!! Years ago, my uncles always said, “Jimbo, pray you never loose your health, because it’s greater than all the money in the world.” And boy oh boy, were they correct! To those who rode in the April Freedom Ride, I took several pictures, but many were blurry. It was a great day & ride. Pat’s Place hooked us all up with nice Koolies, and other than the Pizza machine breaking down, Mark took care of us with Free Hot Dogs, at Pirate’s Pub! I need a break, so as of right now, there will be no June issue or I will combine the June/July issue together and take July off. Just wanted to let you all know why. Big Love, Cochise, Bianca & S.B.

My Opinion Perhaps you tire of my rants and raves, but as you may have noticed over the last 14 years, this is my outlet, so here’s another one, Minimum Wage!!! I believe Florida voted to up the minimum wage last year or so, of course we also voted in the affirmative on keeping our clocks on Daylight Savings Time, but................ Minimum wage? Everyone says it will put mom & pop shops out of business. Perhaps some, but I don’t believe that, and I’ll tell you why. When I entered high school back in the Fall of 1968, I really noticed the way some dressed, which was in all the latest fashions. The girls still had to wear dresses or skirts, but the dudes, as long as they had on a collared shirt, tucked in with a belt on and socks, you could wear jeans, but most of these new (to me) students wore nice slacks, Bass Wigeon shoes, which at that time cost $32 a pair and shirts with “fruit loops” on the back. As time progresses, I notice those who were dressed the best, where either kids from BIG farms, these also drove Camaros, Mustangs and 4X4 trucks, OR their parents were business owners. Three or four of them‘s dads were dentist or doctors and they wore the real good stuff, not out of the Sears & Roebucks catalogue as we often did (and I was very grateful, I’m NOT complaining). Many of my HS classmates’ parents had shops downtown, like a photography studio, a dry cleaners, shoe stores, plumbing shops and the kids drove the nice fancy cars and trucks along with wearing the clothes. These also became the class presidents, Mr. & Miss Freshman, Sophomore, etc., home coming Kings and Queens, and so one. They also had indoor plumbing LOL, which we didn’t have until 1971. “So Cochise, what’s your point?” My point is, that many of these stores had been in the family for several decades and were very successful, as noticed by what they drove and wore, Chops 10
but you may say, “They worked hard for what they had”. I could argue that by saying most inherited these ways of life, but I won’t. Instead I’ll argue that unless the store was ran strictly by family members only, they had to have employees, who didn’t wear the extravagant clothes nor drove fancy cars. My point? What is my point? Okay, here it is, the majority of businesses that have been around since the 40’s and 50’s have become wealthy, while many many times underpaying their help. I don’t remember when minimum wage started, but it was for a reason, and then as a starting point. Look around our area, and tell me what you see or saw from High School. It happens right here! Just one example, T-Shirt outlets on Main St. Or the tourist traps on A1A. Go in and ask a worker what they make an hour? Then ask the owner how long he’s owned it? If over 20 years, they are successful, and have lived a nice comfortable life from it. Their kids have the best skateboards, surf boards, sunglasses, bikes, etc., while their employees struggle to buy gas for a ragged old car to get to work, and much of the time are looked down on. I’ve experienced this with my children, (for a bit and I mean a tiny bit). These successful mom & pop stores NEED to pay better, and quit using teenagers as expendable labor, paying them absolutely nothing compared to how “they” live, and justifying it by saying, they won’t be here long anyway. Why? Can you blame them? Because a minimum wage job requires you to move on and up. I want to interject here, that NOT all family owned businesses do this to their labors. I won’t, BUT can name a few here that take care of their people, and that’s why they have been with them from High School until now. To those, I salute you. I’ve not even said anything about these billion dollar stores which we call “box stores” now. Those suckers made BILLIONS during the covid thing, as they were the only ones allowed to be open, BUT how many workers were compensated by these greedy bastards? Chops 11
I think ALL fast food joints should have to pay more. McDonalds should lead the way. I am NOT saying start high schoolers off at $15 an hour, but take good care of those who are working and doing a good job. Don’t wait to long to pump up their wage, and they’ll stay, especially the managers, who put up with much, from the workers to the customers, or “Owner” would you want to do their job? Every Wal-mart worker, who works, like my sister did for them, should have been given thousands of dollar in bonus’, yep you heard me right. That is just a drop in the bucket to them. By The Way, when my sister Deanie died, Wal-Mart where she worked for most of her life, did her good. It was the older one in Owensboro, KY and they put out a small memorial at the front of the store honoring my little sister. Thank you. So HUGE cooperations should pay better, period! And mom & pop stores, you could do better. I hear everyone saying $15 a hour would put you out of business, I don’t believe that, but if you really think it will, then hire ONLY your children and family and run it yourself, just saying! When we moved here in ‘05, my son was promised a job at $12 an hour, but before he got here a retired man, who had a five figure yearly retirement check coming monthly, took the job for $7 an hour, because he was bored. We went everywhere looking for work for him, and TOP pay was $10 an hour no matter if it was mowing yards or driving a fork truck in a factory, and guess what, 17 years later, you know what the top pay is now, $10 an hour! I call bullsh*t on this. I think a good minimum wage is good for the common man, not just kids but grown men and women. Today, or even in ‘05, you can not make it on $10 an hour, and that’s why my son went back up North to TN, where factory workers start out at 15 to $20 an hour. This is just my opinion and based strictly on my observation Chops 12
over the years. I reckon my real point is, there have been a lot of mom & pops who have become wealthy through underpaying their help!!! I am very grateful for so many mom & pop shops that have long time employees, because it says, you are doing something correct. Thanks for being leaders in this messed up society we live in, and may you continue on with great blessings, you’ve earned it.

Back in the 60s, there was a beat a few of us heard. It was the idle rythem of a Harley 74. It was Rock an Roll, Easyriders magazine, and the old B Biker movies, like Wild Angels and The Born Loosers, Hells Angels 69, and of course Easyrider itself. It was a ragged look, worn Levis, and scuffed motorcycle boots, long hair and even a Primary chain made into a belt. Those of us that heard it, danced to it, lived it. Times change, now 50 years, we are old, long in the tooth, a former shadow of what we once were. But somehow, some of us, still hear that old beat, echoing down the corridor of time. And as crippled, as old and tired as we may be, we still dance. We weren’t Wall Flowers then, and we aren’t now. Let’s dance. ~ By Ken Bradway

Just Some Tips To Keep You Alive I have been riding regularly since 1968, so 54 years and I have never been down on a bike. Yes, I know about jinxing myself, as I’m reminded each time I say this, and I respond, “I may wreck leaving here or die today, but what I’m sharing HAS kept me out of preventable accidents and UP!!! 1. If you take your eyes off of where you’re going (the road in front of you), for more than 3 seconds, you’re setting yourself up to crash. Cars will stop in front of you that quick. Don’t be a sight seer if even in the remotest amount of traffic or you’ll eat the azz end of a car. 2. If a car is in the turning lane coming toward you, the car is going to make a left hand turn, possibly in front of you. DON’T look at the driver! Look at his front tires. If they’re straight you have a second to react if he pulls out. If his tires are already turned towards the direction he’s about to turn, BE ALERT!!! 3. As you know, cars & trucks have blind spots, by now you should know where they are, so stay out of them. If your both going the same speed which causes this, speed up or slow down, or if your pipes are loud, maybe rack them, so they’ll know you are there. 4. Don’t pass a car and especially a semi and then come back in on them to close. You’re just going to piss them off and that will not end up in your favor. 5. If someone around you is driving erratically, get away from them. Stop or exit!!! 6. TRUST NO ONE!!! You are responsible for your OWN riding abilities, so do not think anyone else is looking out for you!!! 7. Cars are often times going faster than they appear, like at Samsula Rd. and Hwy 44. Don’t pull out without looking twice and if you have a newby riding with you, remember he may go with you when you pull out. 8. Don’t try to diagnose your problem (if your bikes making a noise, etc.) while rolling, unless you are on a non congested street, and NEVER on the interstate, you’ll get ran over. 9. Keep your tires fresh and aired up. I read this in an Easy Rider back in the 80’s, 35/40/7. Air pressure, 35 lbs in front, 40 lbs in the rear and check them every 7 days!

As many of you know Shaun from Trailer Trash Choppers had a bike wreck last month, here is an update via his facebook account: I fractured 18 bones. I had three separate surgeries, on three separate parts of my body. I have titanium plates holding my ribs, shoulder and foot together with over 100 screws holding the plates to my bones. I have high hopes that the pain I do feel everyday will subside in time , but it’s not going to do me any good to dwell upon it or whine about it. I do know that I will never look the same or feel the same as I did before the accident. But as I said many times before. I’m alive, I’m not crippled, and I still have all my marbles. For that I thank God. Chops 53
Cadillac Sin. So the younger man was left the 56 Cadillac Coupe DeVille by his grandfather in his last will and testament. It was a well kept treasure that his Grandpa had bought late in 1956 as a dealership leftover that the dealership couldn’t sell. It was a special order car, with a 3 speed manual transmission, and was painted a bright Vernillion Red with a white top. Black wall tires, and very plain wheel covers. Somehow the special order was cancelled and the dealer was stuck with the car for over a year. The dealer was frantic to sell the eyesore off his lot to the point he had considered a repaint to a more proper color for a Cadillac. Remember, this was 1956, and late in the summer, he had a whole lot full of stoic respectful high class 57s to move. He considered such a car this color and build to be a sinful sign of disrespect for the Cadillac name. And along came the Grandfather.. He was an old Italian immigrant, who came to America after the war, and started working as a laborer in the concrete business. And the man worked hard, he learned English, he became a US citizen, and was very proud to be an American. He married and raised a family, and eventually started his own concrete business, and was doing very well. As part of his success was to own and drive a Cadillac. So one Saturday afternoon he visited the Cadillac dealership and began to inquire about buying a new car. He was well dressed, and we’ll spoken, and the sales crew welcomed him. He walked the lot, but he didn’t like the 57 model very much, he felt the hoods were to short. Then he spied the forlorn red 56 in back lot. It impressed him, and he bought it on the spot. It required a day or two to clean the 56 up, and finish the paperwork, tho there wasn’t much, because he paid cash. So on that following Tuesday afternoon, the Granfather was heading to the dealer to pick the car up, but he was on the job, and Chops 54
there was a big pour that day going on. Just as he was about to leave for the dealership, a wooden form broke loose sending fresh concrete everywhere. The grandfather jumped into the ditch and began straightening the broken form, sending concrete all over his shoes and pants. The other workers jumped in and they got things under control quickly. After the pour was finished the Grandfather headed off to get his prized car. As he entered the dealership the sales people were surprised to see him all concrete stained and dirty, They felt insulted that a mere laborer was there to buy a car, but there he was, cash in hand and he bought the car. Again the dealer felt this was the ultimate sin that a construction worker should be buying one of his cars, but then again, it was the one nobody wanted. So he swallowed his pride and made the sale final. The grandfather had his Cadillac. Years later the grandson inherited the 56. It had been driven a lot, the paint was faded, and the upholstery was worn. The grandson had the car sent to a quality restorer to have the car redone, and again the statement came up, what color to repaint the car? The grandson said bright Vernillion Red, just like Grandad would have wanted, rebuild that awesome V8, and that very cool 3speed on the wheel. Even tho, it was a Cadillac Sin. ~ By Ken Bradway

Andytown was an interesting spot, with a friendly name, at the corner of US 27 and Alligator Alley in Broward County. It was not really a town, just a truck stop owned by a guy named Andy. Right after World War II Andrew “Andy” Poulos bought an existing business and surrounding ten acres for $50,000. Under Andy’s reign, the truck stop slowly expanded on its pumps and coffee shop with a bait shop and a bar. It was never officially a town. But it was called so by those venturing north or south on two-lane U.S. 27, or west or east on two-lane State Road 84. It was a place you could get food and a cold drink. Fishermen and gator hunters frequently stopped there. In 1972, Poulos died on a trip to his native Greece and was buried there. His nephew, Konstantinos Tsanos, and a partner took Andytown over for the next seven years, until it was bought by the state for I-75, which required the land for its interchange. Chops 56
