cochisechops@yahoo.com or (386) 690-6270 When I say “the way it was and still should be”, I am not just speaking about motorcycles, but my statement, from which I will adhere too, and continue to preach until my dying day, encompasses our nation as a whole. I’ve never liked change, in any aspect of my life, from things like having to learn a newer remote control (some see this as progress, I see it as “why”) to having to watch filth piped into my home, via cable TV or whatever alternative that may be available, that embarrasses me, not only in front of my daughter and grandbabies (if they happen to be here), but my wife. What happened to the “Cleavers” & Beav? Things that use to make the whole nation blush is now paraded down Main St. USA and the majority applaud it. Even in the church house! Yes the church building is a place where sinners are welcomed, but we don’t have to change our convictions to accommodate them. The Gospel doesn’t change, but some people have changed it, for what they believe is progress at reaching the lost for Jesus. “Just trying to get’em to heaven”, they say. I have a few regrets over my 67 plus years here on this earth, many that I prefer not to speak about, but one of those was liberating myself from the “old paths” of the Bible to modernize the church I began in KY in 1992. We reached hundreds, but I never compromised preaching the truth, (which American pulpits have done today). American pastors today are just different, forgetting evangelism and pushing more “self help” sermons! I didn’t mean to get off subject that much, but change or as my liberal foes call progression, is or has killed what we know as the greatest nation in the world, and we need to get back to the way it was. Here are some examples: I personally think homosexuality is wrong! But I do not hate those who practice it! I was in a revival in Ohio and “read” from a report from black men, who will not go to a church for 2 main reasons, one, they don’t like the preacher making more money than them, and their wives keep giving more and more to him (the church), and secondly, they are very displeased with churches hiring practicing homosexual men to lead the singing. I already know the liberal’s response to this, but they’re wrong. These young men very seldom get saved and as the black brothers said, NOT ME, “It gives them the impression, that it’s ok”, like the church approves it, and many do!!! A woman jumps up and leaves the service and calls the pastor to tell him I was homophobic! I just READ the report, but my point is, she can ~ Page 29

God’s Corner DEMAS!!! The Backslider!!! For you folk who have become Christians. I will use a biblical character named Demas, to ask you this question, “Where are you in following the ways of Jesus?”. (Christian means Christ follower) The name Demas means “Popular”! So we assume, he was! Are you? Because if you are, then being a believer & follower of Christ is a tad bit harder. It means you may have to give up some of that popularity to be a true follower. The Bible as we have it, is not in chronological order, or lined up in the years they were written. The majority of scholars believe James was penned first, then the 2 letters to the Thessalonians, and then Galatians, etc. So keep that in mind here. The first time we see Demas’ name is in the small book of Philemon. I. The Dedicated! Philemon 1:23-24 Mentioned with Mark & Luke. Demas was on fire for the Way, and he showed it. “A Fellow Laborer & Worshiper” II. The Dreamer! Colossians 4:14 Now, as Paul signs off, Demas is only mentioned as “and Demas”. He has started backing off of his commitment to his new life in Jesus. III. The Deserter! II Timothy 4:9-11 Demas has left Paul and the cause they were sharing all across the land, why? Because he remembered what his old way of life was like, and loved it more than this new one. Remember his name, “popular”! Was he teased by others in the same echelon as himself, how movie stars do other movie stars today, if they take a stand for Jesus or conservatism? Did he love partying more than the new life he was now living? He just simply loved the “things of the world” more!!! Where are you in your “New Life” in Christ, no matter your age or how many years you have been saved? Ashamedly, I’ve been in all three places, but now....................Are you a faithful follower, or drifting away from God’s way, (have you ever known it), are you a deserter, a backslider?

TWO DECADES OF RAISING MONEY FOR OUR VETS! It started out like any other 2nd Thursday of the month in March. It was warm and the sun was shining, so that brought out “The Choppers” for Willie’s Chopper Time Bike Week 2022. Though there were probably 40 or 50 more bikes that pulled in, that didn’t register for the show, I heard there were still about 130 chopper jockeys that did. (Some just made a $20 donation for the Vet’s Fund, but didn’t put their bike in the show). By the way, ALL the money from this great event goes to our local veteran’s home. The vendors were set up or setting up, and the visitors were rolling in, and by 11am, you either had to park next door at Party World, on the sides of the road or in the grassy areas at Walgreens, and though there was an 80% chance of rain, and had rained some earlier that morning, the people just kept coming. I saw Ms. Jean and Willie out walking around greeting the people as they came to support this effort to bring the national chopper community together in one spot for one day to honor, not only the vets, BUT the garage builder and the common people who spent all year putting together their creations to be shown off at Chopper Time. I got to walk around quite a bit myself, as I wasn’t selling anything this year. I set up with Marcus from Trailer Trash Choppers like I have for a few years, and just gave away the magazine, the newest and some back issues. I also laid out some of the Poster/Calendars for people to pick up. Since Marcus had a donation jug set out for Shaun, his partner who was in a motorcycle crash last month. (Shaun was released Chops 10

from Halifax last Friday and is still recovering from many broken bones [but thank God he is alive]), I decided to put his jug on my posters and made a note that said, please take one and if so be, how about a $5 donation for Shaun, as several had already offered a donation for the calendars. I am not for sure what kind of money was given, but I got rid of a lot of posters and magazines. Thanks to all who helped out. I saw many local friends and some that I only see maybe twice a year. I was truly enjoying the walk, the talk and just was having a good time. The cloud cover helped keep the temperature down, but soon they darkened and a big gust of wind swept through the Tropical Tattoo lot, but no rain. Then about a half hour later it started raining, not hard but continuously for over 2 hours, but guess what, no one left. Well, that’s not true, a few did leave, but the chopper cats stayed till the end. Many gathering under several 10 foot by 10 foot canopies that were erected by Willie. (Ole fake Fauci would have had a fit), but the attendees of this event, that has been going on now for over two decades, didn’t seem to mind. As I was still walking around I saw several enjoying their temporary standing place, as they were making new friends and just drinking the beer that was for sale by the Vet’s Organization. It was the first time though that we didn’t get to roll the winners of the show upon the stage for everyone to see, and to put a face with the build. It was also the only time the local mags didn’t get to take pictures of the winners, as all the photographer’s spots were occupied by wet onlookers, who were trying to keep from getting wetter. I got a few pics before my phone battery went dead, due to me videoing the Chops 11

inside of my rear pant’s pocket for 31 minutes, LOL. Not sure how that happened as I thought I turned it off, (BTW, I did the same thing at OB’s the previous Sunday!) In the end, Willie’s Chopper Time went very smooth. All the fees from the vendor’s who pay to set up, and all the alcohol sales, went to the Vets, plus the Bike Show fees. Though it rained on us, it didn’t drown us or our mission. Thanks Will, Ms. Jean and all the volunteers that made Chopper Time Bike Week 2022 another success!!! Big Love To All, Cochise P.S. Stop By Tropical Tattoo at 825 S. Yonge St (Hwy 1) Ormond Beach and say THANK YOU!!! It takes a lot of work to pull off this landmark show, but they do it twice a year. BTW, they have some of the BEST artist in town, if you want a tattoo, whether a full back piece or a small “MOM” one, or a cover up! Chops 12

call me all kinds of names, like homophobe, racist, etc., BUT if I say or read anything a bit awkward I am to be dismissed. Well thank God, the pastor dismissed her and backed me, because I just shared a truth............old school! In today’s America, if you’re a white, Caucasian, Southern Christian heterosexual, it’s okay for media to call you stupid, intolerant, insensitive, etc., even if you’re NOT, but we are suppose to keep our mouths closed towards them. They act like we have really evolved, because we have openly affectionate homosexuals in high offices and all over television, (as in the latter, I am sick of it, more later). Someone asked why I didn’t think a homosexual could be our president, here’s why, because if you think Putin runs over Biden, put one in office, and send him to Saudi Arabia to the peace talks and see what happens? That person won’t even be allowed to get off the plane there, “IF” even allowed to land a plane in those type of countries. Progressives have their heads so deep in the sand, they can’t see the here and now, much less the future. America, whom many think is evolving in the world, is in reality “crossing the line of no return” of ethics & morals, and we are getting weaker by the day, the laughing stock of the world, especially when we speak of being the greatest powerhouse or nation in the world. DO NOT take my words out of context, I don’t care if you, your kids or grand children are, but to me it’s wrong, and wrong that our schools push it. (Even nature teaches us that its wrong.) And if you can say it’s right, I can say this. Now, on to the TV thing. If I was a person who came to America for the very first time, and knew absolutely nothing about America, and sit down to watch TV, there are many things I would notice; First, white women prefer black men over white males, (and black guys only like light skinned ladies), plus these TV ads love dissing on white men, making them look stupid. (Notice who gets the coke dumped on their heads or who is painted as an imbecile when making a decision, etc., the white man). I’m speaking of commericials. Television portrays white males as stupid or criminals. Of course programs like “Impractical Jokers” doesn’t help the cause. Those guys are immature and 100% NOT funny to real men, like old soldiers. The sitcom “The King of Queens” and all shows that cast over weight white guys make them look stupid. We need more “King of the Hill”, as Hank also sees these immature men as WEAK! Honestly, there are things I would not do for $$$, like having kids pour green goo over my head just to make “you” laugh. I’m not going to belittle myself for your entertainment, and neither should Hollywood or it’s puppets, (actors for money). It ain’t worth it to me!!! (I wonder if John Wayne would have, or Clint, or the Babe or Col. West or Mr. Tibbs?)

Chops 29

It seems that every commercial that involves home security cast ONLY white males as robbers, why? Because if it was a black or Asian man, the TV station and the product would be protested, sued and banned. White folks don’t have a NAACP, Jesse Jackson, Al “I’m In It For The $$$” Sharpten or white liberal women to take up their cause. We did have a President that treated ALL of us, no matter the color of skin, the same, but “Ya’ll” didn’t like him. I do know we have some caucasian males that are stupid and criminals, but what I tire of is the “blanket suggestion” by the media as, only whites are! In the majority of the commercials, that has a mixed race family, it’s usually (with a few exceptions) a black father and a white mother? AGAIN, that is fine, if they’re in love and marry. I know black men who are great people, husbands & fathers, but guess what Hellywood, male guys can be good husbands and fathers too. Can you just show a couple of ads portraying such? Hey, someone has to take up their cause, just as a man of color should and has done for his people, and I applaud many for it, IF it wasn’t about money. Also, if I was a dark skinned female, I’d rebel against these ads as well! If I was new here, I’d think black men don’t care for the darker skinned women, only the lighter skinned ones or mixed race. I guess TV executives have never heard this, “the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice”. And most commercials, movies & TV shows usually only cast the lighter skinned black woman. But if they do cast (in most cases) a really dark skinned or over weight woman, it’s in a negative way, like they do heavy white men. Watch some You Tube videos and see how the plus sized girls are used as “hoes” and ridiculed. To me that’s BIG TIME prejudice. Rise up “sisters” and speak out! Hey I know many of you black brothers don’t feel this way, and if you do, you are a racist, just like if you believe, ALL white people are racist. It burns my butt up when I hear that all whites are that way! I was never racist or prejudice, until I ran into it, face to face, in the military from the blacks, but even then I pushed it aside, and now because it is pushed down my throat 24/7, on TV news, etc., it’s making me that way, and I don’t want to be. So do whatever you want in your life, marry someone of the same gender or another race, BUT television, liberals, progressives, atheists quit pushing your lifestyle down my (and my babies) throat and calling me names and labeling me as something that in reality, YOU ARE!!! YOU ARE A RACIST, NOT ME!!! Oh but wait, only white men can be racist, RIGHT!!! Second, as I watch TV, I would notice it’s okay for two men to kiss and love on one another in a sexual way, as well as women. Again, that’s fine, BUT does the majority of Americans really want to see this, I know I don’t? It’s

Chops 30

like, “Well we have to keep up with the times. This world is moving forward and it’s called progress. So get with it or get left behind.” To which, men my age says, “Move on without me. Quit pushing your lifestyle down our throat, and leave us alone”. By the way, you’d be surprised how many people support us, more than them, but they’re safe, because these are too scared to say it. Today, I do not care if their feelings are hurt as they have stepped on, no, trounced all over our’s for years now! #quitpokingthebear The 3rd thing I’d notice is, Trump and those who voted for him are retards and are all those “phobias” (to many to name and I can’t spell them anyway), and Biden is a great man. Trump is mean. Biden is passive and peace loving. Trump is rich and a bully, while Biden is a poor humble man trying to help the poor, yeah RIGHT. Who bullied Ukrainian leaders, if they didn’t fire their leader over commerce and told to give his son a million dollar a year job, and bragged about it openly, Trump or Biden? #hunterbidenisquilty I am sure there are more things I’d notice if I just moved to America, but these three top the list. TV (and schools) teaching us homosexuality is ok, and if you disagree you’re mean, all whites are racist and Trump is the devil. Finally, I speak as myself and not as the immigrant that’s watching those TV “programs” or ads, so listen “It’s alright to be white.............and brown and black and yellow and red (speaking of people who got/get treated bad, the Native Americans), BECAUSE GOD doesn’t make mistakes, Period”. It’s ok to be a MAN or a WOMAN! It’s ok to be an effeminate man or a Tom Boy! Be proud of what He made you, whatever color your skin is, or gender, BE PROUD! I promise you, the great (silent) majority doesn’t mind and will not belittle you for it. Yes their are exceptions, as “Red Necks” of all colors will pick at you, but let it go in one ear and out the other, unless it’s physical abuse. We have all, at one time or another been bullied or made fun of over, looks, language, lack of money, etc. It depends on where you are and who is doing it. There are mean people everywhere and with every color skin. Just don’t say Black Power, as that offends me or Brown Power, that offends me too, and Lord God Almighty, do not say “White Power”, because then, well you know. (LOL) I love all people (but not their actions) and I love you! ~ Cochise PS Ya’ll do know a black man helps me with the mags, Mike, (AKA Black Mike, White Mike or as I call him, Ebony Mike) and he dates one of my dearest friend’s widow, a white lady. As long as they are happy, so am I. Mike and Denise are friends and supporters, who check on my family regularly and are very much appreciated. I don’t see color, until forced to.

Shovelhead Dave’s 1980 Solo Trip We left off last time waking up in the tent just outside of Pueblo Colorado with the rain still coming down. Loaded the wet camping gear on the drenched chopper, kicked it over and headed up north on I-25 toward Denver. On a long stretch of highway out in front of me, I spied a big old tree with what turned out to be a chopper parked underneath it. I couldn’t exactly figure out what the chopper was doing there, but two things popped into my mind. Either the guy was broke down, or else he just stopped to admire the monsoon we were trapped in, hahaha. And that big tree he was parked under still didn’t have any leaves on it yet, cuz it was early spring, so I didn’t think he was under there for shelter. Riding up closer to him maybe 75 yards away now, I pushed in the foot clutch and dropped the tranny back into 3rd gear, let the clutch back out and the upsweep fishtails rumbled like a jake brake on a semi. Then clicked down into 2nd, then came up to the shoulder in the rain. As I pulled up behind the chopper, the first things I noticed was it was packed for the road and had a license tag down on the lower right side by the axle and that license tag said California and it was the old black and gold one. I knew right away I was about to be in the presence of something real. I pulled on up beside the chopper on the right hand side and its pilot was standing in front watching me ride in. I put it in neutral, flipped the toggle switch and it was shut off. All was quiet now except for the rain coming down. I threw my right leg over the saddle, stood up and this is what I saw: An old Panhead chopper sitting in a rigid Harley frame with Shovel Chops 36

heads on it, well worn shotgun pipes, a gas tank mounted high Frisco style, an early style kicker arm, mechanical brakes, and a wide glide front end with pull back bars. This old chopper was a true veteran of the road. So was its rider. He appeared to be maybe 10 years or so older than my 25 years. I suddenly felt like an apprentice chopper rider again, on my Newer Bowling Ball Motor with cut up aftermarket frame, hahaha. I looked at the guy and said “Hi, I’m Dave.” He said his name was Steve Kelly. When I asked him if he was having a problem, he said the water had finally gotten to his bike, both carb and points. I looked at his carb, it was an SU. And his points were not protected inside a cone like mine were, they were out in his circuit breaker getting wet. I told him I had one of those little spray bottles of WD-40 that I used on my water logged carb and told him it worked for me. I was just suggesting now, mind you, cuz there was no way I was about to tell this road veteran what to do with his own chopper,...right? But he grinned and said “Let’s give it a try.” So he pulled off the top screw cover on the SU’s dome and I gave him the can and he shot some WD down inside the SU. Then he pulled off his breather and shot some inside, then did the same with his points and condensor. I had a semi dry red shop rag in my tool bag and was using it as a shield to keep off the rain and to wipe off the excess WD40. Steve put the circuit breaker cover back on and tightened up the SU’s top screw. Then he turned the key on, gave it a few kicks and it fired right up. He got a big grin going and so did I, and he was letting it run for a while to clean itself out. And that is when I made another suggestion,...”Hey Steve, I’ve got a nice big fat joint of Kona bud with the little purple hairs. You want some?” He sez, “How can you possibly still have anything dry on you?”,...cuz we were both still dripping in the rain, hahaha. So I said “Like this” and pulled the chrome cap off the left handlebar grip and there was the Big Fattie, all nice and dry ready to light up. So we did. After I mentioned how I liked his old black and gold California tag, he asked me where I was from. I told him I lived in Dallas, until three days ago, now I live on this chopper seat right here. He asked me where I was headed, I said up to Washington State. He said he was Chops 37

headed to Coeur d’Alene Idaho and then he said we might as well ride on together, so now I had a kool new riding partner outta the blue, or right outta the rain, I should say, hahaha. So we rode on together up I-25 North until we got into Casper Wyoming. It was probably about 300 miles or so, but we stopped cuz we were dead beat. We decided no more fucking camping out that night, we got a nice big roomy motel room and there was a pizza joint and a likker store right next to it. What more could ya ask for? Hot showers and food and beer, yay! This is the only photo I have of Steve Kelly’s Panhead chopper, and this was from the next morning at the motel when it finally stopped raining. We left off last semi-thrillin’ episode,... crashin’ at a road side motel in Casper Wyoming. I now had a brand new California riding partner on a Pan/Shovel Chopper named Steve Kelly. Anybody out there remember that name or his chopper? Since I was still kinda loaded with cash, I srpung for a nice big roomy motel room. It was a huge ass room, two big double beds, kitchen area, nice roomy shower, and double closets with Color TV yet, hahaha. Once we got situated in the room, we spread out all our road gear on different ends of the room. I actually set up my tent in the room to dry out. Back then it was one of those little orange nylon pup tents, if you remember those things. Of course there was no way I could stake it to the floor, hahaha, but I did put on the tent poles to stand the tent up and I tied one line to the closet door and the other line to a chair, so it Chops 38

was set up and could dry out pretty quick. We had all our wet clothes spread out to dry. Now it was time for hot showers, put on some wet and cold clothes cuz nuthin’ was dry yet, and then,.....hot fresh Pizza & Beer, yay! Oh,...and more Kona Bud with the purple hairs. Steve told me he was from San Francisco and he had been out on the road since January. That made me the lightweight on the road for only 3 days. He said he knew folks up in Couer d’Alene and that’s where he was headed. I said I didn’t know anybody in Washington State just yet but that’s where I was headed,...for a new start. We woke up kinda early the next morning and it was nice and sunny for a change. Had breakfast at the motel cafe, filled up the gas tanks, kicked the Shovel Chops over and took off. I was still 1,000 miles out from where I was headed, so that meant two more days on the road for me. Looking at the soggy road map, Steve still had about 800 miles to go himself. We took off, rode on up I-25 into Montana, BIg Sky Country. Then around Billings we peeled off onto I-90 headed west and rode that nice big freeway through mountains. We stopped only for gas and food and to toke, then crashed for the night at a campground by Butte, Montana. That gave us around 500 miles that day, which was pretty good. And now we were back up in the high country, elevation around 5,500 feet, way up high in the mountains. This photo here is up high in the mountains and is getting ready to pack up the camping gear again and take off. Last time California Steve and me had stopped the Shovelhead Choppers at a campground around Butte Montana for the night. After we got the tents set up we got a nice little fire going for some warmth. Looking at the semi-dried out road map, it looked like Steve had about 275 miles to go to Couer d’Alene Idaho while I had about 475 miles or so to make it to Ellensburg Washington. We both decided we’d go for the gusto the next day, cuz it was supposed to be nice weather, so we might as well make hay while the sun shines,...right? Besides, who wants to get caught out in another monsoon storm? I-90 was our only highway we needed now, so we ain’t got no more use for the still damp maps. All we had to do was point the front Chops 39

wheels west and roll on the throttles, hah. And that’s what we did. We had fun riding in the good weather through the high country, or at least I know I did. It was a fun ride leaning in and out of the big turns, mountinas all around us, river running next to the freeway every once in a while. We even saw eagles flying overhead. Montana is a looooong state when yer riding east to west, and it seemed like to me it was taking forever to cross it. Missoula finally came and then went behind us, then we were getting closer to the Idaho border and then Couer d’Alene. I will admit it was a kinda sad feeling when we got to Steve’s exit ramp for Couer d’Alene, and he waved me on by with his raised clenched fist and he took off down his exit ramp never to be seen by me again. It reminded me of the 1979 Randal Road Trip where Randal peeled off for his exit. Ya get kinda used to riding with somebody for a few states, having them be there, hearing their exhaust pipes blastin’, and then suddenly,..... they are gone, and then it’s just back to only you and your bike and your bike’s pipes, going down the highway by yourself again. Oh well, I started out this long road trip by myself so it’s only fitting I ended it by myself. I was lucky to have Steve through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and into Idaho. Funny how I accidentally ran into a guy in the middle of a downpour whose chopper was flooded out under a big tree in Colorado, and now 41 years alter that, I still remember his cool California chopper and him, and I even got a picture of his bike to remember that soggy meeting by. I continued the ride alone now, through Spokane on I-90 and then on into Central Washington. I rode through little towns like Ritzville and Moses Lake, towns on I-90 that I would soon become very familiar with. The Shovelhead’s upsweep fishtails kept rumbling through a little town called George,.....George Washington,..... get it, hahaha? And then I crossed the big ass Columbia River by a town called Vantage, and kept on rolling over the pass into Ellensburg, the destination. I was dead beat. Got a motel room at The Thunderbird Motel on the east end of town. I dumped off all the camping gear in the room and rode around on a bare chopper for a while, hahaha. I checked out the bars downtown Chops 40

on their old fashioned town square, what a natural slice of Americana. Then I rode on over to the Main Drag to a place called The Hi-way Grill, which would soon become one of my favorite places to eat, cuz not only did they have good eats, they were also open after bar time, hahaha. And the chopper felt a lot better riding it with nothing on it except my butt. Oh well. At least I had made it. This picture here is out in the woods by Ellensburg Washington looking through some pine needles at the trusty Shovel chopper who got me all the way here, 2,000 miles. Tomorrow I gotta find a new dump to crash in for a while and check out my new home town. Last time the 74 Chopper had just ridden into Ellensburg Washington on I-90 from Idaho. I got a room at The Thunderbird Motel out on the east end of town. The next morning I ate breakfast up the road from the motel at the The Hi-way Grille, a really cool old joint built in the 1940s, which became sort of a hangout for my eats plus it was close by. Next I set about finding a dump to rent so I’d actually have a place to live cuz that Thunderbird Motel ain’t exactly cheap, hah. The rent prices kinda floored me. I had my own shacky house in Dallas and the payments were 104 a month. The places I was looking to rent were 250 to 300,.....yikes! I finally found a crash pad for 200 a month on Water Street, downtown one block off the Main Drag, and it was furnished, which was kinda cool since I didn’t have any furniture, hahaha. Gave the guy first & last months rent and there I was, an official Ellensburg resident,...sorta. And the place I rented was a duplex with a college kid in the other half, and we were right close to the Hi-way Grille and the University, with a nice burger joint right acrost the street and even a head shop a coupla blocks away. Things were starting to look up. Next on the agenda was to get rid of that Dallas First National Bank Cashiers Check for 10 grand, which had been the money from selling the shack in Dallas. Since I was now living right downtown by the Town Square, I moseyed into the biggest old bank in town to open a savings account with the cashiers check. I would like to state for the record that I had every intention of getting a job in this town and buying a house there, but sometimes intentions and plans don’t work out Chops 41

so hot, do they, hah? Anyway, I walked up to the counter and I told the girl teller I’d like to open a savings account. She looked at me, sorta in disgust, I guess I’d say. I mean, it wasn’t her fault, I was kinda scumbag looking, shaggy hair and beard, road worn jeans and scruffy black leather jacket, what was she supposed to think? That I was there to rob the joint, hah? She looked at me and I will never forget what she said next. “You need to have at least 50 dollars to open a savings account here.” Bwahahaha! So I opened my eyes really wide sez to her kinda loud-ish in mock disbelief, “Fifty whole dollars?” I pulled out my wallet and handed her the sorta worn and rolled up cashiers check for 10 grand and said “Will this be enough?” She didn’t say nuthin’! She looked at it in her hands for a coupla seconds, then walked over to the big boss man and handed it to him with one hand and pointed at me with her other hand, bwahahaha. Anyhow, I finally got my savings account going and I gave them the address of the dump on Water Street, and next I got a phone hooked up, the type of phone with a dial on it that most folks today wouldn’t know how to use. Now I am semi-established in Ellensburg. Next I went to the nearby lumber yard and got a nice 10 foot long 2 X 12, walked back to the dump with it, and that became my nice new ramp for the chopper to get to its nice parking spot,...inside the dump, hahaha. Hell, I ain’t leaving that nice fugger outside in a strange town,..would you? So next I hopped on a classy Greyhound Bus and took it to Seattle where I hopped a plane back to Dallas, and this was the first time for me to fly on a big jet plane. It did not crash, so that was good. Then I went to my folks’ house where I had my car stashed, the White 75 Vette that some of you saw in the Randal’s Blazer picture with my Chops 42

bare chopper frame sitting next to it in the yard. I took the Vette to my buddy Hal’s garage and we put it up on the lift, changed all fluids for the trip up to Washington, then stuck a trailer hitch on back, complete with tail light hook ups,...oooh la la. I loaded up a litte U Haul trailer with my carpenter tool box, extra chopper parts, the busted 1976 Durfee Girder, the stereo and albums, 19 inch TV, kitchen stuff like pots and pans and the rest of my clothes and off I went, back up to Washington. This time, I took HIghway 287 as far as Amarillo, then I took Route 66 West to Los Angeles, cuz I had seen enough of Colorado Rocky Mountains from the last 6 chopper road trips going through there since 1973, hahaha. Once I hit LA and the Pacific Ocean, I simply turned right and took Highway 1 and 101 all the way up north, as far as it went. What a trip. I know this was a car trip instead of a bike trip, but that’s the way it had to be, no choice. Besides, I would later make that Highway 1 and 101 trip quite a few times on the 74 AMF Chopper in the coming years. I cruised north along the California Coast, mountains on my right, ocean on my left, watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. That was cool, had never seen that before. I drove across that Big Sur Bridge that Bronson rode his Sportster over, and I drove across the Golden Gate Bridge and the rest of Northern California Coast. Then I headed up the Oregon Coast, holy shit, how beautiful. I ate tons of clam chowder at the grottos along the way, had fresh red snapper and other fried fishies along the way. When you get going good into the Washington Coast, Highway 1 North suddenly becomes Highway 1 South, cuz you go all the way around the Olympic Penninsula, until you actually go south into Seattle. It was raining in this area,...big surprise,...and since I was in a car, I did NOT get wet, hahaha. I stayed dry the entire 9 day trip, had tunes and Kona Bud and had it made. This was the best car trip I ever took to this day. I got back into Ellensburg and unloaded the U Haul into the Rental Dump, ready for my new life to start. I put the Purple Hair Kona Bud inside that knot hole in the tree trunk, don’t ask me why, hahaha. And I had a really nice parking spot for the 74 AMF Chopper, which I hadn’t Chops 43

seen for a few days. You can also see my old yeller carpenter tool box and that same buckskin fringe jacket that I got from the base of Pikes Peak on the 1973 Canada Road Trip on the Red 67 Sportster. This was now the end of April, 1980. Time to find a job and some new riding partners. Now,.....who remembers what happened in Washington State on May 18, 1980? Last semi-boring episode we left off getting settled in Ellensburg, flew back to the old home and drove the car up from Dallas, had a place to crash in E-burg and was looking for a carpenter job. Guess what? There weren’t none, hahaha. I had that cuzzin of mine that lived up in Anchorage that first gave me the idea of living up in the mountains, that suggested Ellensburg. He was married and had a son and they sold their house in Anchorage and moved down to Ellensburg. Why? Cuz his mom in law lived there and she was getting in bad shape with arthritis. Now my cuzzin Joe did the smart thing and also the exact opposite thing of what I did. He sold his house in Alaska where houses are big bucks and he moved to E-burg where houses were cheaper compared to what he had been used to. I sold my cheap house in Dallas and moved to where they cost more. Yikes. I was gettin’ in trouble already. Joe had his builders/contractors license from Alaska and he got one in Washington pretty fast, he had his tools shipped down and was ready to go. So I went to work for him. But there wasn’t much work to be had. Mount Saint Helens blowing up kinda stifled things for a while, too. We got a coupla jobs remodeling kitchens and bathrooms but that was about it, except for 4 houses where we put foundations under them. Joe got hooked up with a real estate guy and in order for the houses to sell in 1980 they had to be up to code. These houses were probably 100 years old or so and did not have foundations. So we’d dig holes under each corner of the house and put concrete blocks in the bottoms of the holes and we’d jack the houses up in the air maybe a foot or so, then dig trenches and pour concrete footings under the perimeter of the house, then lower it back down and bolt it to the new concrete footings. Sounds like fun, eh, bwahahaha? It sucked. In Dallas, 1979, I had been making 12 bucks an hour and my house payment was only 104. I was doing pretty good there. Now I was getChops 44

ting 8 bucks an hour and the rent was double my old house payment. You can see where this is headed,..right? (To the poor house.) But on the fun side, Ellensburg did have some fun bars,...I mean,...taverns,... cuz you couldn’t call a drinkin’ place a bar there in Washington State. And I fell in with a bunch of good motorsickle people. Dane and Stacy were on their chopped 64 Sportster, Chuck was on his 75 rigid Black Shovel Chopper, Jerry Webb on his Panhead chopper, then there was Ghost Rider Taz and then Mushroom Tim on his Panhead, and Ghost Rider Bob, too, plus a few others. Now lemme tell ya, being the new young guy in town with the shiny Black Chopper was a horrible thing to have happen to me. Those Ellensburg gals would not leave me alone. It’s like they were trying to wear me out. Girls from the bars, girls from the diners and cafes, girls from the University, what was a young guy supposed to do, anyhow? I nearly got dehydrated to death. When our work falls to shit in a few months, I will be moving over the pass to Wenatchee, cuz that is a city with 40,000 people, four times the size of Ellensburg, plus it has a Harley dealer and three cabinet shops to possibly work for. And that is,.....The End of this saga. Thanks ~ Shovelhead Dave

For over 3 years now, I have wanted to rent the “Hall” out in Samsula to have an “ICONIC”, Daytona Beach area Legend’s Party. I just never had an extra $400 for the rent on the place. By legends, I mean those who were either born here or has lived here for a half century, give or take a year or two and who made an impact on the motorcycle/biker world here. I truly wanted to get all these folks together for one BIG Hoorah, but now, well, it’s getting to late. We just lost Swamp, a “Brother” that accepted me into the Samsula “Tribe” from day one. By the way, I love my Samsula friends so much and miss hanging out down that way. Besides Swamp, Billy “Ace” Myers, Larry Russell, Mr. Edward, Sidecar Willie, Peewee From Miller’s, Old Man Tom, who worked for decades at HD in Yorktown, Bubba Baker, and many more that my mind can’t conjure up right now, are gone, (forgive me if I left any off). I know more brothers have passed that’s not mentioned, but how long have they been or were here, and what did they contribute? Example; I’ve been here 20 years and Willie’s been here all his life, I see him as an icon but not me. We have people still living that are, in my opinion, legendary, like Marcus, Daytona Red, Yetay, Breeze, Doc B., Coe, Al Bulling, Ken Tucker, OB & Willie. These men have either made a name in racing “here” or riding old iron all over America or promoting our area in film and magazines or just plain popular Daytona people, like Bogus Jack, Johnny Two Beers, Clay, Dawber, Rocky, Tommy, Gray Beard Dave, Wino, Johnny R&R, Boot Hill Karin, Joycey May, Gloria Perry, MaryAnn Muir, Barbara Hall, Ms. Betty at Smiley’s, plus all the folks that own & operate the Iron Horse, Froggys, Smileys, Dirty Harry’s. If there was a Hall Of Fame for doing all those “kool” things, many that have gone on, and these, would be in it. I was in Face Puke jail and didn’t know of Swamp’s passing for many days, but this picture is forever etched in my heart. RIP Brother!!!

Why You Never Ever Believe What Someone In A Position Of Importance’s Says, Immediately! A Sad Story! I know many of you don’t know my son Zach, but he is a good man, who is shy. When he was a child he was very shy and also had a tough time pronouncing some words, thankfully he got over the latter, and maybe a little better on the shy part, but I tell you that to share a “regrettable” story concerning my precious baby boy, and a telephone operator (this was in maybe 1991) that called me late one Friday evening to tell me that my son kept calling her a very harsh curse word. She said he kept using the “F” word when speaking to her, and I promptly went to his room and asked him had he been on the phone and he said “yes”? Did you speak to an operator? He said some woman kept coming on the line asking if he needed help and yes he spoke to her. I flipped him over on his stomach and busted his butt, really only one good swat with my hand and walked away, and went to tell his momma that he had indeed talked to the Bell South lady, BUT WHAT DID HE REALLY SAY?

After school that Friday, his new friend Jock, had asked Zach to call him that night (he lived in the same neighborhood as us, only maybe 3 blocks away) and they could make plans to play ball that Saturday, and that is what my boy was doing, he was just calling Jock. But either he wasn’t dialing the number correctly or his buddy had given him, by mistake, the wrong number. As Zach would place the call, he kept getting a recording that said, “Please hang up and dial 0 for the operator, for assistance”, or something like that. So he did, and this lady from above answered. Zach told her he was trying to call Jock, J-O-C-K and she miss understood this child and his slow shy way of talking to interpret it as him saying the F word! And dumbazz me just sided with the adult, not trusting my child, whom had never given me any reason to not believe whatever he shared with me before, and I disciplined him over it. Even to this day, I could literally cry over that scenario and want to right now as I type this. Forgive me son, for I am so sorry! ~ Dad Chops 48

The vast majority of fentanyl is manufactured in China and enters the United States via the southwest border. In fact, the Drug Enforcement Agency reports that an astounding 80 percent of fentanyl in America comes into our country through the U.S.-Mexico border. Fentanyl is often the supplemental drug of choice for smugglers and dealers, as the illicit synthetic opioid is cheaper than heroin and nearly 50 times as potent. It doesn’t just stop at pure fentanyl. As the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported that last year, in 75 percent of cocaine deaths and 50 percent of methamphetamine deaths, the drugs were mixed with fentanyl. There is no doubt that the compounding border crisis is exacerbating the illicit fentanyl stream into America. In 2021 alone, border officials encountered nearly 2 million illegal immigrants, seizing 11,201 pounds of fentanyl — a 134 percent increase from fiscal year 2020, and a 400 percent increase since fiscal year 2018. It is clear to me as both a lawmaker and a physician of more than 30 years that the most important way to get the fentanyl drug crisis under control is by first securing our southern border. I call on the Biden Administration to take swift and decisive action to enforce our rule of law and reinstate common sense border protections as a matter of national security and public health.” ~ U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy M.D.

Someone’s (Not Mine) Top 10 Best American Bands List, You Agree? 1. Lynyrd Skynyrd O’kay, I agree with Gibson on this number 1 pick. There is no band that sounds more American than these rugged survivors from Jacksonville, Fl. In excess of 30 years after fatality stole their voice and their heart & soul, they carried on to sell out shows to bandana-and-bluejean crowds singing “Free Bird” like it was nationwide anthem. And perhaps, just maybe, it really was. 2. Aerosmith For forty years, these Boston rockers have charted their way to the fore-front of the American rock scene. Few shows can match the sheer power of these reformed rebels. “Walk This Way,” “Dream On” and “Sweet Emotion” are only a handful of the songs you’re guaranteed to hear this 4th of July weekend if you’re within arms reach of a stereo. 3. The Beach Boys Back in the mid-’60s, there were really only 2 other bands that entered the discussion with The Beatles for Greatest Band in the Planet. Undoubtedly, The Rolling Stones were one. However at the time, the other band that garnered serious talk was The Beach Boys (even The Beatles agreed!). With unequaled harmonies and a sheer musical genius cranking out the music, The Beach Boys were America’s finest compared to the British Invasion, right up to the point where Brian Wilson dropped out of the race. 4. Nirvana Essentially the most influential band of the last 20 years, Nirvana swept away the loopy gymnastics of ’90s electric guitar with a single riff. If “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was the only song the group ever recorded, they’d still garner a spot on this list. Yet Kurt Cobain’s soulful lyrics and deceptively musical strategy to songwriting ensured that the group’s short life would forever send ripples throughout the musical horizon. 5. The Allman Brothers According to Gibson Guitars, this was number one on their fan poll for Best Guitarist of All Time, Duane Allman was the original fretted Chops 54

monster to his blues-style jam machine, together with co-guitarist Dickey Betts. Over time, the lineup has altered (with modern guitar geniuses Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks presently on-board), however the improvisational guitar-gods of the band has in no way faltered. 6. The Ramones The modest album sales The Ramones produced through the years pales in comparison to their influence on decades of artists. All of the snottynosed punks who trash the department stores now can bow their heads to these zillas of punk music. 7. The Eagles No question about it, these So. Cal rockers shaped a sound so distinctive and so completely tranquil on the ears, that nobody has ever been capable of duplicating it. With song-writing geniuses like Don Felder, Glenn Frey and Don Henley on board, each song tells its own personal story. And that “Hotel California” ending solo is pretty much as good as rock guitar gets. 8. Metallica The largest powerhouse in thrash for the past twenty five years, Metallica show no signs of slowin’ down. With the astounding wizardry of Kirk Hammett and the customarily-imitated-never-duplicated chunka-chunka of frontman, James Hetfield, these giants of metal continue to hammer ears all around the planet. 9. The Doors Among America’s illustrious icons – up there with Marilyn, Elvis and James Dean – is the late, famous James Douglas Morrison. However the magic of The Doors was that they were not simply the backing band for an electric frontman. They had been an diverse and gifted band of artists whose sum was forever greater than the parts. 10. Guns N’ Roses Rock and roll is always most at home when it’s sitting in a gutter, dirty and arrogantly menacing to all passersby. Rock and roll is – well, ought to be – risky. And not for the reason that Stones, or at least The Sex Pistols, has a group exuded bluster and stagger like Guns N’ Roses. Listen to “It’s So Easy” off the influential Appetite for Destruction and try not to flinch. What about Tom Petty, Heart, KISS, Bob Seger, Kid Rock, 3 Dog Night?

What Is Putin’s Motive???

(Just An Opinion, No Bases)

I AM “NOT” FOR PUTIN NOR THE KILLING OF INNOCENT PEOPLE!!! This is all speculation, written on 3/16/22 Is Putin only trying to stop those countries, where he lives (in that part of the world), from becoming Westernized or Americanized? Is he saying NO to Liberalism and Progressives? And if the countries are accepting the way of the western world, is he putting his hard line fundamentalists foot down, as to say NO? Which I 100% disagree with his methods and the way he is doing it. No one, that I’ve heard, has ever said “WHY” he is doing what he is doing? Only speculations! Many assume it’s because of the resources that these other places have, and he wants them. Some say he is trying to build back the great USSR, but what is he really doing? Is Putin, in his own “mad man” way, trying to “save”’ those places from America, Westernization, Liberalism & the Progressives? Whatever, he’s a war monger who does not have the right to do what he is doing, in my opinion.

This man despises America!!! He wants nothing in our country to be in his, not even our music, so is he really trying to save his people, or is he just crazy???

Axis casualties during the Battle of Stalingrad are estimated to have been around 800,000, including those missing or captured. Soviet forces are estimated to have suffered 1,100,000 casualties, and approximately 40,000 civilians died. The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the deadliest battles in World War II.
