The Great Quote: Men Who Wanted to Be Left Alone “The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of “Men who wanted to be left Alone”. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. The moment the “Men who wanted to be left Alone” are forced to fight back, it is a small form of suicide. They are literally killing off who they used to be. . . . Which is why, when forced to take up violence, these “Men who wanted to be left Alone”, fight with unholy vengeance against those who murdered their former lives. They fight with raw hate, and a drive that cannot be fathomed by those who are merely play-acting at politics and terror. TRUE TERROR will arrive at the Left’s door, and they will cry, scream, and beg for mercy . . . . but it will fall upon deaf ears.“ From Ron Gray

cochisechops@yahoo.com or (386) 690-6270 What a busy month November was, eh? Freedom/ Mom & Pop Ride on the 7th was the best. Sometimes the fewer people who show up, makes it more personable and you get to talk with and spend more time with those you care about, rather than having to rush around trying to spend quality time with everyone. I had a great time on this ride and to the 25 bikes that showed up, thank you from me AND Speedway Bar, The Last Resort Bar, Wind Walkers Leather & Biker Goodies & wherever else you went afterward!!! Then there was the 19th, 20th & 21st!!! A surprise birthday party by B & Sugar Baby, and a few very close friends (THANK YOU) on Friday the 19th, then on the 20th we rode over to the Crossroads in Lebanon Junction for the R.I.P. Run, before closing the weekend out on Sunday at OB’s Pan/ Shovelhead Show. What a great turn out for both of those latter events. I’ve posted a few pics through out the mag for you too see. By the way, I asked last month about what content most of you liked, and surprisingly, many said, “We like it just the way it is, don’t change a thing”, so okay!!! I want to the thank the hundreds of you who wished me a Happy Birthday, it meant much. As I said, I am breaking a record everyday I am alive, as no other Powell male has lived past 66 years and 3 months, thankfully I’ve made it to 67. It’s been tough, with all the “inherited” ailments I have, like the psoriatic arthritis, diabetes, heart decease, which all was passed down to me, HOWEVER I am fine with that as my parents and grand parents also passed on to me some good traits as well. Instead of listing them, I’ll let you figure out what they are and you can decide what you like about me or not, LOL!!! Merry Christmas from my family to yours, and Happy Birthday Jesus, and thank You for making a big difference in my life! Big Love, Cochise, Bianca & Sugar Baby Powell My family has started detailing motorcycles here at our house. It’s something we have been doing for awhile now for friends and family, so with B out of work, me part time, along with our daughter we thought we would start doing this part time to suppliment our income some. Jobs start at $100 and up. (Bianca is out of work because of an accident that caused her to break her right ring finger. It happened at the Goodwill store, as she was picking up a picture frame the glass fell out and was about to hit a child, when B caught it somehow it broke her finger, so she’s off for 6 weeks)!!!

God’s Corner Luke 2:6-14 says, While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no rooms available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Happy Birthday Jesus Christ!!!

For Florida, is was cold for the November Freedom/Mom & Pop Ride that started at the Speedway Bar on ISB, beachside! About 15 of us showed for the brisk ride to a couple more stops. But the great thing at the start of the ride was how many people didn’t know about The Speedway Bar, and how nice it was. Many said they would be back. Keith the owner along with Dawn the barmaid, made us all feel welcome. By now it’s 12:30 pm and a few were drinking a cold beer, but Dawn made us some hot coffee and hot chocolate before we parted their kindness, heading to The Last Resort. Also, Bogus Jack, another Daytona Beach icon and Dawn’s old man rode with us. When Jack goes with you, you can expect 2 things, you’re going to hear some funny jokes and that “everything is going to be alright”. Thanks agin Keith & Dawn for hosting CHOPS Mag and us!!! We headed East to A1A and rode South to Dunlawton, and crossed back over to Hwy 1, and went South, were we found another 5 or 6 bikes waiting on us. When I walked in, Al, the owner, was glad to see all of us. I hope it gave him a financial bump by us showing

received us with open arms, and a free water, coke and snacks, thank you, and many had never been there said, they would be back and a few spent some money while there. Wind Walkers is a great place and good people, please go by and see them. They are at the flashing yellow light in Oak Hill, on the left going South! After that we went in separate directions. Five us stopped at Jan & Libby’s Chops 12
Now for a few miles to the next stop in Oak Hill at Wind Walkers Leather and Biker supplies. I called to make sure they were open and I told them I was coming down, but I didn’t mention to Julie I was bringing 25 more people with me, LOL. Her and Doug
Hi Top Bar & Grill, and walked in on a huge spread of food, free with a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, a place I give to monthly, so I jumped on that, and we ate some fine home cooked food. After that, I came home, as it was still Florida cold!!! LOL The next Freedom Ride, or the next one, will be a two or three day event where people can hook up with us for the duration, or ride part of the way! It’ll BE FUN!!!

The cooler weather has allowed me to get back to putting together my 1978 FLH project. As you can see here, I found a motor, thanks to Paul at Street Thunder in Mims, FL! It cleaned up super nice. All I have left is getting the tranny, inner & outter primary vapor blasted, brakes and wiring and it should be ready to fire up! Even though I would love to be farther along on it, I am happy to have this much done. Thanks for all the help with parts and the encouragement! Oh, and I need a carb, either a CV or an S&S E! Shovelhead Dave Summer of 1979 Road Trip, Part 1:
My buddy Randal was a Detroit Diesel mechanic in Dallas and he rode a Purple 73 Shovel Chop with suicide clutch and stick shift, sorta like my Black 74 Shovel Chop with suicide clutch and stick shift. Randal and me had a road trip scheduled for the summer of 1979, headed from Dallas to New Mexico, into Colorado, then over into Utah and down to that Four Corners Monument thing where you can stand in 4 states at once, then we’d ride on down into Arizona then cross back through New Mexico to Dallas. We had a week to do it with the 2 weekends before and after that week thrown in, for a total of 9 days. Then,.....a coupla days before we were to take off, tragedy struck when a fockin’ dump truck had spilt some pea gravel down at the end of my street and I did not know it. So I’m ridin’ back home on the 74 AMF Chopper after work and I’m downshifting, ready to turn into my street just like I had hunnerds of times, when suddenly, I ain’t got no back wheel under me, bwahahaha! That’s right, it slid to the left side on the pea gravel and down I went, onto the right hand carb side of the chopper. I tried to save the slide by throwing my right leg out to save the bike, but all it did was throw out my right knee,...bummer. It swelled up and got sore as fock, then it got all stiff where I could not bend it and I could just barely walk on it. I did not go into work the next morning, I sat around the house all day with ice on my knee, hoping it would not fock up our road trip. I called up Randal that afternoon and told him what happened. I said I guess the the trip is now off,...sorry. Randal said “Bullshit. We are Chops 26
still going.” I asked how? He said “I will kick start your bike for you the whole trip.” I was like “Are you fockin’ kiddin’ me? You know it’s a stroker with high compression, right? You sure you wanna do this for nine days?” Randal said fock yeah, we are going on the trip. So,....we took off on the trip. Since Randal was a Detroit diesel mechanic, that means he knew lots of truckers, and those guys had lots of those things you can eat to keep you awake. We gobbled us down some pills and left Dallas after sundown when it was starting to get dark. We rode across the Texas Panhandle on Highway 287 until we saw the sun rise in New Mexico. I took this picture here up in the high country in Colorado, and yes, Randal kicked my bike over the whole gawddam trip, hahaha. He’d kick mine over, then I’d hobble onto it with my stiff right leg all wrapped up in Ace bandages, then he’d go kick his chopper over and we’d take off. Got lots of funny looks along the way. Summer of 1979 Road Trip, Part 2: We left off in Part 1 last time riding through the Texas Panhandle at night to avoid the hot Texas sun and summer time triple digit heat. It was a fun night time ride with hardly any cars out on Highway 287, mostly just the 18 wheelers and us on the two Shovel Choppers. We were in New Mexico when the sun came up, so now it was time to rest a little bit on some picnic tables at a road side rest area. After relaxing for a bit and letting the vibrations subside, Randal kicked my 74 Shovel over, then I hobbled onto it with my swollen knee and he kicked his chop over and off we went again, looking for breakfast for us and some gas for the chops. Some times we planned road trips down to the last detail. Like if we had a specific destination in mind to get to, like Daytona Bike Week, Chops 27
we would allow so many miles and day and figure out how long it would take to get there. And for those of you old enough to remember KOA Kampgrounds, you might remember how they had their little road atlas things, that had a map of the USA with all their KOA Kampgrounds listed. The beauty of those things were,...say you wanted to ride 400 miles the next day, the guy at the desk could look up the road you were headed, pick out a KOA around 400 miles up ahead, call and make a reservation for your tent site. That was kinda kool in my book. Not exactly the Ritz Carlton, but purdy damn close in my book, hahaha. You’d know how far you had to ride the next day to get to your next KOA tent site. And KOA’s usually had a little cafe for eats, or maybe vending machines, usually had showers, washers and dryers for your filthy bug guts splattered clothes, and sometimes the nicer KOAs even had swimming pools. And I think those KOAs were usually like 4 or 5 bucks a night. If something happened along the way, say a little mechanical trouble, or maybe you took a side trip or maybe had a few too many beers at lunch time and you were running kinda late, well they’d still be holding the tent site for you, so you wouldn’t hafta go camp out on the concrete front porch of the high school in Cheyenne, Wyoming like I had to one night, bwahahaha. On other road trips back then, if we weren’t doing the KOAs, then maybe we’d camp out in State Parks or National Parks, and this was back before you had to make reservations. You could just ride up and say you wanted a tent site and they’d assign you one. SImple, eh? Chops 28
Those were two ways we used to road trip. But this road trip was not either one of those types of trips, bwahahaha. This was a “Let’s Get Wasted Every Day and Have Fun Road Trip.” And we did. We didn’t care how many miles we were going or didn’t go, and we didn’t care where we were headed. Our only goal was to have fun getting wasted and riding our choppers in the mountains. That’s called keeping it simple. We were not looking for bright lights or busy cities, we had that back in Dallas. We were looking to get out into the boonies where hardly any people were around. So for some reason I don’t remember, we headed to Creede, out on Highway 149, kinda in the southern part of Colorado and a bit west of the center of the state. This picture here is one Randal took while we were riding up the highway. He had the Kodak Instamatic and turned around and took this action picture, hahaha. And if ya look really close, you can see the handle of my walking cane sticking out of the back pack on the back of the chopper. Summer of 1979 Road Trip, Part 3: We left off last time riding into Colorado and spent the first night camped out and then headed on to Creede the next day. The next day found us riding through the mountains on Highway 149 going into Creede. Once we got into town we found out it was a really cool little cowboy town. I think its history was an old silver mining town. If any of your folks lived there, traveled there, or know more about Creede than I do, please feel free to correct me, cuz we were just wasted chopper tourists. Chops 29
We rode up and down the Main Drag and liked Creede enough that we circled the two Shovel Choppers back around and headed back outta town to the southeast end where we had come from cuz we had seen a nice little camp ground on the way into town, maybe 2 or 3 miles outta town next to a river. So we gave the campground guy a few bucks and set up our tents, then Randal kicked over the two choppers and we headed back into Creede for eats and drinks. We had noticed this one saloon in town that looked like lots of fun, an old cowboy saloon with swinging doors, even. So we pulled the chops up in front of the bar and shut ‘em off. The racket from the exhaust pipes attracted a few folks who came to the swinging doors and looked out at us and one guy yelled out “ALLLL RIGHT!” Looked like it might be a fun and friendly place after all. And the town had those old wooden sidewalks like the old downtown part of Fort Worth had. It felt kinda like home. And we saw the town Sheriff, and he had on cowboy boots and a cowboy hat and a brown leather vest and a six point star and a 6 shooter in his holster, just like the old west days. So Randal started into the saloon swinging doors and I grabbed my walking cane and hobbled along behind him. The saloon was a fairly nice sized place, had a pool table and juke box, had some decent food and cold beer and freindly people. While I normally like to shoot pool a lot, I was gimped up with my right knee being out, so I just watched mostly and my main job was ordering the drinks and playing the juke box, hahaha.
Chops 30
And then? The Tequilla came out. And next thing we knew, it was closing time, bwahahaha. We were drunk as skunks, and didn’t really even know where we were. The temperature had dropped a bit in the night, and Creede
sits up a bit over 8,500 foot elevation, and that meant the two Shovels were now kinda cold. And that meant Randal had to kick over my cold 84 inch stroker,..... while he was drunk. After maybe 3 or 4 tries, it popped and fired up and the folks at the swinging doors let out whoops of joy, I hobbled onto my bike and then Randal kicked his Shovel over, and we pushed in the foot clutches, the open belt drives made their spinning sounds, we hit the stick shifts into first gerar and took off back to our tents while the little crowd was laughing and yelling and telling us good bye. It was a really fun night I still remember. Although it was kinda cold in the mountains at night, the moon was out bright and it was a fun ride, nice and crisp enough to kinda clear the ta-kill-ya out of our noggins,....sorta. And then? Just as we got close to the camp ground, ol’ Randal decided to wind out his throttle and he took off like a bat outta hell. I had no idea what he was doing, and I’m sure he had no idea where he was going, hahaha. I pulled on into the campground up next to our tents and shut the chopper off. I put the kickstand down, leaned the bike over and just sat there on it for a bit. I could hear Randal’s Shovel in the distance getting quieter, then it got really quiet. Hmm. What happened? Then I heard it off in the distance again and it got louder and louder until he got back to the campground and pulled up next to me. He pulled up in the gravel and shut his motor off. I asked him what happened. He said he went too Chops 31

far and when he found out what he did, that he tried to turn around in the road, but his front wheel went into the soft dirt shoulder part and he lost his drunk balance, hahaha. So I asked him “You mean you dropped your bike?” He said yep. He dropped it on the left side, but at least he did not break off a clutch hub stud, so that was good. We laughed about it, since he and his bike were OK. And then it dawned on me what a pile of bullshit we woulda been in if he had dropped his bike on the right hand side and thrown HIS right knee out, bwahahaha! We coulda been two stuck young punk saddle tramps up 8,500 feet in the Rockies with no way to start either chopper and we were about 800 miles from home. Let that one sink in. This is a picture I took of Randal riding up the road. Summer of 1979 Road Trip, Part 4: We left off last time getting kinda drunkish at the old cowboy bar in Creede, Colorado, staying til the bar closed then riding back to where we were camped out just south of town. Woke up the next morning with some nice Tequilla hangovers, hahaha. Rolled up the sleeping bags and tents, packed them on the choppers, got ready to leave the camp. Randal kicked both chops over and we were off back into Creede for some breakfast for hungover hungry us and some gas for the thirsty bikes. We made it into downtown Creede in no time flat. We backed the choppers into the curb outside a little cafe/diner. It was a little mom and pop joint, with maybe a half dozen locals inside. We got some strange looks as we moseyed in, kinda like we had just landed a flying saucer out on the Main Drag and were two Martians coming in to eat with them all. They had a juke box, but unlike the one from the night before with old rock and roll in it, this one had old country music in it, which was also fine with us. I hobbled over to it with the walking cane and put some folding money in it and played us some Willie and Waylon, Loretta, Merle, George and Tammy, and other good ol’ stuff like that. The nice little lady was like a grand mom, waiting on the tables and Chops 34
running the cash register while the old guy was the short order cook on the grill. I remember getting some tasty biscuits with sausage gravy and scrambled eggs and hash browns. There were 4 things we ate that stood out to me on this trip and this good home made breakfast was one of them. I remember leaving the lady a nice 5 dollar bill for her tip, just to let her know all us scooter tramps ain’t all that evil. Now 5 bucks may not seem like much of a tip today, but this was back in 1979 when most guys slid a couple or three quarters under the edge of the plate, bwahahaha, so that Fiver mighta been the best tip she got all that summer. Anyhow, we were full, time to fill up the choppers and hit the road for Antlers, our next destination. Antlers was about a 5 or 6 hour ride away, up north and a little bit west of Creede. The elevation of Antlers is a little over 5,000 feet, so it would be a downhill ride, hahaha, cuz we were currently at 8,700 feet in Creede. This photo here was taken along the way, and don’t ask me what the hell it is cuz I don’t know. Maybe some of you do? Is it an old abandoned mine? A landing spot for UFO space ships, hahaha? Who knows? You can also see in the picture how my right knee is still swollen, even 5 days after I went down on the 74 Shovel in Dallas, and there’s that trusty walking cane handle still sticking out of the duffel bag on the back of my chopper. Summer of 1979 Road Trip, Part 5: We left off last semi-thrilling episode leaving Creede for Antlers, Colorado, which was about a 5 to 6 hour ride to the northwest of Creede. Now riding them suicide clutch stick shifting rigid choppers cross country ain’t exactly for delicate wannabes and sissies. Even with our iron butts, every once in a while we’d stop to stretch our legs and light up a big fattie and enjoy the clean mountain air,....which we just made smell like devil weed all around us, hahaha. This picture is us doing just that,.....a nice rest stop. We pulled off the road, had a nice view, got a good buzz going, and everything was calm and quiet,....until Randal kicked over the Shovel Choppers again when it was time for us to split. To Be Continued Next Month, With 4 or 5 More Parts......... Chops 35
Is this picture of Jesus holding an engine sacrilegious? If so, why? Does the good Lord above care? Or is it just men that care? Do people, especially church people paint a picture of Jesus that is inaccurate? How do you see Him? Is He relevant in your life, or are you like so many, who say they believe in God, but not Jesus? So, who is Jesus? The Bible says He is God incarnated as a human being! The Jewish people say He was a great teacher and prophet, but not important in their salvation! A lot of men, after being told what Jesus did for mankind, sees Him as a weakling! A majority of folks only see Him as someone to lean on in times of trouble, but He is not that important in their lives at other times! To some His name is just another cuss word or someone to curse when things don’t go right for them, or someone to blame! But, who do you say He is? And does it really matter? It seems everyone has their own idea of who and what Christ is about, and they have a mental picture of what He looks like. Blacks see Him as a black man! Asians see Him as oriental. While most see Him, mostly because of the artist’s rendering of Him, as a white man. Perhaps some even think He is a blonde hair, blue eyed republican American! Right? I could spend hours on telling you who I think Christ Jesus is and what His mission here on earth was, but 90% of the people won’t read it, and by the way, it would be based strictly on what the Bible says, not on how some interpreted it. The Bible is 100% a book of faith! You will only see the real biblical Jesus if you read the Bible for yourself, not what some preacher, pastor and especially a priest (or someone who refers to themselves as an Apostle or Prophet) tells you.
Chops 36
I bring all this up and post this picture because honestly He doesn’t care what picture we draw of Him or what we call Him, but whether we will take the time to seek Him and what He stands for, that’s it. This month is a time we celebrate His birth, and we all know December the 25th really isn’t His real born on date, but what does that matter? Any date we choose is ok, as long as we know WHY we are celebrating His birthday. The politicians say Christmas may be cancelled because all the CHINA JUNK that we Americans buy, is stranded off shore in huge ships waiting to be unloaded! This tells me that most Americans do not understand the meaning of what Christmas is all about. It’s more than spending money, (many times more than we can afford), on loved ones. It’s more than a family get together. It’s more than the lights, the reindeer, and snowmen! It’s a time of reflection on how blessed we are and what we have. Even the poorest Americans are richer than 85% of the rest of the world. It’s about giving of ourself to help others the best we can. It’s about loving the unlovable, even our own family at times. It’s about giving, but not necessarily expensive gifts, but the giving of our time and talent to make this world a better place. So who is Jesus? For me He was and is the greatest man whoever lived. He’s birth and life was so important that our dates as we know them are based on His birth, BC and AD. Even the strongest atheists, every time they date a check or document, they are recognizing Him. For me personally. He is my Savior for when I die. I have sincerely done what the Bible teaches, and repented of my sins and asked for forgiveness from God, through Christ, and if the Bible is true, and I believe it is, then I am assured of a place in Heaven when I die. If it’s not, no big deal, as His words have helped me to be a better person. (BTW, I am NOT perfect!!!) So who is this Man that we celebrate this month, He is who He is! Paint His portrait as you see Him in your own mind, and believe and see Him as you see Him, not as how another one does. Be Blessed!!! P.S. According to the Bible, Jesus was born a Jew, an olive skinned man born in the Middle East, Not white, not black, not yellow nor red! He would have had dark hair, medium in length with a beard. I hope this doesn’t mess you up! Remember The “REAL” Reason For The Season!!! Chops 37

‘Jump-kick man’ who was filmed kicking Kyle Rittenhouse in the head before the teen shot at him is revealed as a career criminal with an open domestic violence charge for ‘throwing his girlfriend to the ground and attacking her’! Maurice Freeland, 39, has admitted that he was the one who kicked Kyle Rittenhouse in the head on the night of August 25,2020. Rittenhouse is charged with First Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety of Freeland, who was only known as ‘jump-kick man’. The state has painted all these actors as heroes attempting to take down an ‘active shooter’ But DailyMail.com can reveal that at the time of the 2020 incident Freeland was out on bond and is a career criminal. He was charged with Battery Domestic Abuse, Criminal Damage to Property Domestic Abuse and Disorderly Conduct Domestic Abuse Freeland was charged for an incident that took place on March 23, 2020 between Freeland and his partner Monalisa N McDuffie. McDuffie told police that Freeland ‘threw her to the ground and kicked her in her lower right ribcage…then began punching the television’
Kyle Rittenhouse was found NOT GUILTY on all (trumped) charges in his self defense from a bunch of thugs. One was a pedophile, the other a career criminal, lastly the one now referred to as Lefty was also a well known breaker of the law. They were going to kill this boy, bottom line. You can make this about race, or politics, BUT the left needs to remember one thing, well two, not all jurys will be intimidated and the common person is sick of all this bullshit & ready to fight!!! We always hear ‘the rules’ from the female side. Now hear the Rules from the male side. These are our rules: Please note.... these are all numbered as #1 ON PURPOSE ! 1. Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one: subtle hints do not work! Strong hints do not work! obvious hints do not work! Just say it! 1. Breasts are for looking at and that is why we do it. Don’t try to change that. 1. Learn to work the toilet seat. You’re a big girl. If its up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don’t hear us complaining about you leaving it down. 1. Shopping is NOT a sport. and no, we are never going to think of it that way. 1. Crying is blackmail. 1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question. 1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That’s what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for. 1. A headache that lasts for 17 months is a problem. See a doctor. 1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 days. 1. If you think you are fat, you probably are. Don’t ask us. 1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one. 1. You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself. 1. Whenever possible, please say whatever you have to say during commercials. 1. Christopher Columbus did not need directions and neither do we.

If it itches, it will be scratched. We do that. 1. If we ask what is wrong and you say ‘nothing’, we will act like nothings wrong. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle. 1. If you ask a question you don’t want an answer to, expect an answer you don’t want to hear. 1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine. Really. 1. Don’t ask us what we are thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics and Sex, Sport, or Cars. 1. You have enough clothes. 1. You have too many shoes. 1. I am in shape. We have heard about and read about the “stars’ of the movie Easy rider, but what about those who had smaller roles, especially the ladies, Karen Black and Tony Basil, the girls that worked at the House of Ill Repute? Toni Basil was best known as the singer of the popular 1980s one-hit wonder, Mickey, but she also found success as a choreographer and actress. Born Antonia Christina Basilotta on September 22, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she started dancing as a child. At 19, Basil was in Hollywood as an extra and dancer, and in her screen debut was arm-in-arm with Frank Sinatra. Next, a brief but memorable moment from “Viva Las Vegas,” with Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret, as “the girl with the red dress on.” She was also the assistant choreographer for the film. As an actress, Basil started off in the films Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces. Some of her other films are The Last Movie (directed by Dennis Hopper), Greaser’s Palace (directed by Robert Downey, Sr.), Mother, Jugs & Speed, Village of the Giants, Rockula (with Thomas Dolby) and Slaughterhouse Rock. On TV, she has appeared in episodes of Laverne & Shirley (in which she played the character, Mickie), Dark Justice, and in Baywatch Nights as a fortune teller. From Wikipedia (which I pay for) says; Antonia Christina Basilotta (born September 22, 1943), better known by her stage name Toni Basil, is an American singer, actress, choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker, best known for her multi-million-selling worldwide 1981 smash hit “Mickey,” which topped the charts in the US, Canada and Australia and hit the top ten in several other countries. She has collaborated with David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Talking Heads (choreographing and codirecting the acclaimed video for “Once in a Lifetime”), the Monkees, Frank Sinatra, George Lucas, Quentin Tarantino, Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Bette Midler, and The Muppets. So bottom line, she did ok for herself as an actress, a singer but her biggest asset was her understanding of being a successful choreographer! “Hey Mickey You’re So Fine”!!! And then there was Karen Black! Black was born Karen Blanche Ziegler on July 1, 1939, in Park Ridge, Illinois, the daughter of Elsie Mary (née Reif), a writer of several prize-winning children’s novels, and Norman Arthur Ziegler, an engineer and businessman. Her paternal grandfather was Arthur Charles Ziegler, a classical musician and first violinist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She had one sister, actress Gail Brown, and a brother. Black was of German, Czech, and Norwegian descent. The Zieglers came to the United States from Southern Germany from the area of Neukirch (Rottweil) between the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura. Black and her siblings were raised at 224 N. Greenwood Ave in Park Ridge, and often spent time on her uncle’s farm near Green Bay, Wisconsin. As a young teenager, she aspired to have a career as a stage actress, seeking out summer stock theater job opportunities. “From the age of 13 I’d rush out during vacations to find work in summer stock,” Black recalled. “I started by cleaning toilets and by the time I was 16 I was a prop-girl and in the chorus line singing, and at 17 I got my first real acting, paid job.” Black graduated from Maine Township High School East in 1957. After high school, she enrolled at Northwestern University, where she majored in theatre arts, studying under Alvina Krause. Black completed two years of studies before dropping out. She later reflected on her training unfavorably, stating: “I would say that the college training was very lousy, and I don’t think that people learn by being invalidated... Acting teachers, not all of them but many, seem to think that beating up their students and invalidating them will make them better, which I think is completely wrong. And at that age, you don’t realize that this sick person is really projecting all their neurosis onto you, you think that you’re the one who’s damaged... Alvina Krause would not validate and would not allow. I think she had favorites, and you could never figure out why you Chops 57
weren’t a favorite, and it never made any sense. The thing you have to remember is that if a person is making you feel bad about yourself, that person is going to be in his or her own world. They are lost in their own universe.” While attending college, at age 19, Black gave birth to a daughter, Diane, from her relationship with Robert Benedetti. Black gave the child up for adoption at birth, though she did reconnect with her in the final years of her life. Karen Blanche Black (née Ziegler; July 1, 1939 – August 8, 2013) was an American actress, screenwriter, singer, and songwriter. She rose to prominence for her work in various studio and independent films in the 1970s, frequently portraying eccentric and offbeat characters, and established herself as a figure of New Hollywood. Her career spanned over 50 years and includes nearly 200 credits in both independent and mainstream films. Black received numerous accolades throughout her career, including two Golden Globe Awards, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. A native of suburban Chicago, Black studied theater at Northwestern University before dropping out and relocating to New York City. She performed on Broadway in 1965 before making her major film debut in Francis Ford Coppola’s You’re a Big Boy Now (1966). Black relocated to California and was cast as an LSD-tripping prostitute in Dennis Hopper’s road film Easy Rider (1969). That led to a lead in the drama Five Easy Pieces (1970), in which she played a hopeless waitress, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Black made her first major commercial picture with the disaster film Airport 1975 (1974), and her subsequent appearance as Myrtle Wilson in The Great Gatsby (1974) won her a second Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Black starred as a glamorous country singer in Robert Altman’s ensemble musical drama Nashville (1975), also writing and performing two songs for the soundtrack, for which she received a nomination for a Grammy Award. Her portrayal of an aspiring actress in John Schlesinger’s drama The Day of the Locust (also 1975) earned her a third Golden Globe nomination, this time for Best Actress. She subsequently Chops 58
took on four roles in Dan Curtis’s anthology horror film Trilogy of Terror (1975), followed by Curtis’s supernatural horror feature, Burnt Offerings (1976). The same year, she starred as a con artist in Alfred Hitchcock’s final film, Family Plot. In 1982, Black starred as a trans woman in the Robert Altman-directed Broadway debut of Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, a role she also reprised in Altman’s subsequent film adaptation. She next starred in the comedy Can She Bake a Cherry Pie? (1983), followed by Tobe Hooper’s remake of Invaders from Mars (1986). For much of the late 1980s and 1990s, Black starred in a variety of arthouse, independent, and horror films, as well as writing her own screenplays. She had a leading role as a villainous mother in Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses (2003), which cemented her status as a cult horror icon. She continued to star in low-profile films throughout the early 2000s, as well as working as a playwright before her death from ampullary cancer in 2013.

I was listening to Hank Williams as a child living in KY. Back then it was about all anyone listened to, except maybe some Gospel songs, or maybe Elvis or a Motown group, but mainly, there was no Rock & Roll, per say. So I grew up listening to Hank Sr., along with Kitty Wells, George Jones, Tammy Wynette and many more of the older Country & Western singers, yes it was called Country & Western for years, now it is considered Country Classics, but anyways, my point here is, I never really got into Hank Jr., until way up in the 80’s. Why? For one reason they had John Boy Walton playing Hank Jr. in a Bio Pic, and I didn’t like John Boy, who I thought was a smart butt towards his parents in the TV series, the Waltons. Believe me when I say, kids DID NOT back talk nor correct their parents back then, so I never got into the movie about Bocephus. From about 1983 up to 1995 I listened to mostly gospel music, when it was changing from the old hymns, which I still love, to the newer stuff, which I now think that about every song sounds the same, like they are whispering songs! So I missed Guns & Roses, whom I realize now that Axle Rose sang like a bird, what a voice, and of course Hank Jr.

I remember hearing a song called Seminole Wind by John Anderson, and the disc jockey said the come back singer of the decade, and I am like “WHAT?” The last song I heard him sing was “Just A Swanging”, but apparently while I took a break from main stream music, both R&R and Country, things changed. So I was surprised to hear some of the songs sang by Hank Jr., was bad to the bone, like a “Country Boy Can Survive”, “A Country State Of Mind”, and “Family Tradition”! So I started listening to him, and though he sounded nothing like his daddy, he could sing. I love the ballad, “Outlaw Women” and then, “All My Rowdy Friends”, “Dixie On My Mind” and “There’s a Tear In My Beer”!!! So between him and Charlie Daniels, I started listening again to the music that moves a Kentucky country boy’s very soul. He doesn’t sound like his daddy, but he is definitely equal in talent, which brings me too the last Hank, or as he’s called Hank III. Third looks and sounds likes his grandpa and is very talented. He is not reaching many of the genre that listens to, or has listened too his daddy nor grandfather, but he has a great following. Hank III has some pretty raunchy stuff on some of his albums, (perhaps compliments of listening to DAC as a young’en), but when he really wants to tear at your heart strings, he can do that as well as Hank. When Sr. did “Your Cheating Heart” everyone felt those lyrics deep in their being, and Hank III equals that with his song, “Country Heroes”! All the Hanks are good at what they do. I miss Sr., but Jr. makes up for his absence, and III is a great alternative to this new stuff. Thank God! Chops 61
