R.I.P. My Friend Sidecar Willie Chops 6

I really liked the cover this month, as it shows just how tight our brotherhood is here among those who ride together to the benefits, or just out getting together for a Sunday afternoon scoot. Here, we are all laughing at Shaun for putting my Banshee battery down (again LOL) as no good, HaHaHa, and AGAIN it was just a loose wire on Scott’s Road King. The 2nd time it’s happened. So after we found the problem I had just said, “Well, at least he has a GREAT battery!!!” And we all had a good laugh! Thanks guys for pitching in to help, and showing our community what “IT’S” all about. Every month I hear the same thing about the mag you’re holding in your hands, and that’s, “Too many pics of people!” or “Too many pics of bikes!” or “Too much reading!” So you tell me the next time you see me out, which our next ride is Nov. 7th, what you like the best or least, AND I’ll still do it the way I want to!!! LOL You all know I love you though, right? The number of people who tell me that they have EVERY issue of CHOPS always amazes me!!! I don’t even have every copy! The funny thing is when someone says to me, where, they keep their stash of CHOPS. 80% of them say “a rack in the bathroom”, or in the recliner’s side pockets, or even in the garage, BUT my favorite story of where they keep them stored was from a lady (a few years ago) that kept them in her Hope Chest! I asked why, and she responded with, “Well, I’m hoping for a good man, and that he owns a Chopper or older bike”! Sounds good enough to me. If you can get out on November 7th, come on out for our Freedom Ride. We will meet at the Speedway Bar, the old Oyster Bay at noon and leave there about 1PM. Heading to the Last Resort, Wind Walkers & then to the No Name Saloon. It’ll be a good day & ride! Happy Birthday to me this month, 11/21/1954! Cochise “67 years old” Chops 7

God’s Corner John 3:3 says, “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” ~ Jesus Christ Many people say there is more than one way to get to Heaven when you die, but Christians believe in ONLY one way, and that’s through a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Other religions may believe in another way, but “IF” you are a or want to be a true believer, a Christian, according to the Bible, you must accept Jesus into your life. As the Holy Spirit tugs at your heart, like He’s doing right now, telling you, you need Salvation, you must come humbly to God in prayer asking for forgiveness of all past sins, (name them if you can, I couldn’t) and then receiving Christ Jesus into your heart, to become your Savior and advocate that speaks on your behalf to God the Father. Born again, means through Christ you become a member of the family of God! Dear God forgive me of my sins, I accept Jesus!

Everyone knows I love old iron, and I love to ride them as often as I can , especially across the state or out of state, etc., so when the Celebration Of Life for a friend over in Cape Coral/Ft. Myers was taking place Jerry Dier and myself decided to go pay our respects and to ride our old Shovelheads. Him on his 74 FLH and me on the rigid frame that I built back 20 years or so ago. We decided to take two lane black top the whole way, but because we were running late, we rode I-95 South to 192 West before hitting the back roads the rest of the way. About 2 months previous to this trip I had to replace the clutch cable on my bike. It was a simple thing as it’s a suicide clutch with a very short cable that runs from the brass knuckle foot peddle to the clutch rod, no big deal, right? But after the changing of the cable, I was always having to readjust my clutch, and on the way over there it kept loosening up to where I had no clutch play, so with the help of Jerry, who could see a whole better than me, we kept adjusting, first the cable, then we’d adjust the push rod/ throw out bearing. After doing this twice to both, we decided if we Chops 10

continued adjusting that we would push the clutch push rod through the kicker case. As we got to the exit for us to go to the motel room we had reserved, I pushed the clutch peddle down and I only had about 1/2 inch of play! Now, if we had of been in familiar surroundings I would have rode it without a clutch to get were I was going, but we were in unfamiliar territory, and decided to pull over and call a friend. Bottom line was the throw out bearing was shot and was shredded. So we left it a friend’s shop and went to the motel to rest up and tackle the problem the next day, and with the help of Drew from Freakshow Fabs, we all got her going in time to follow some locals to the place of the memorial for Sweet Pete, RIP Brother!!! On the way home we decided now was the time to do the two lanes all the way home. My bike, as Jerry’s, likes to run between 60 and 68 MPH, so we set out to return home on the old iron, taking our time and enjoying life. Two old relics on two old relics, LOL!!! ~ Cochise

Daytona Beach is a city on Florida’s Atlantic coast. It’s known for Daytona International Speedway, which hosts February’s iconic Daytona 500 NASCAR race. The beach has hard-packed sand where driving is permitted in designated areas. Near the boardwalk’s rides and arcades, Daytona Beach Bandshell stages free summer concerts. Steps from the beach, Daytona Lagoon water park offers go-karts, laser tag and waterslides. Located in Florida’s Volusia County, Daytona Beach is one of the state’s most popular destinations, but it’s not just the endless strips of beaches and auto racing that draw the crowds. Which beach is better Cocoa or Daytona? When we compare the travel costs of actual travelers between Cocoa Beach and Daytona Beach, we can see that Daytona Beach is more expensive. And not only is Cocoa Beach much less expensive, but it is actually a significantly cheaper destination. So, traveling to Cocoa Beach would let you spend less money overall. Is Ormond Beach better than Daytona Beach? The beach is well patrolled and the sand is hard packed -- great for walking and bike riding. It’s not as crowded as Daytona and its really a family beach. It’s a family favorite. Is Daytona Beach a bad area? With a crime rate of 53 per one thousand residents, Daytona Beach has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One’s chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 19. However in September of 2021, Daytona Beach was deemed the third best town in America to retire too. Mixed signals on these last two statements. They 1st scare people off with crime rate, then say it’s “the” place to retire too. You reckon the bad guys paid someone off just to get old folks here, so they could rob them? LOL Anyway, I LOVE DAYTONA.......PERIOD!!! ~Cochise Chops 31

What Is An Outlaw??? (Not just speaking of the motorcycle club) Let us first look at what the dictionary says, then Wikipedia, then what others say: The dictionary; Outlaw, noun: a person who has broken the law, especially one who remains at large or is a fugitive. Famous outlaws; Billy The Kid, Jesse James, Butch Cassidy, John Wesley Hardin, and others! Wikipedia tells what the “real” definition of an outlaw is. (I’ll write below what they say), but primarily it’s someone who is “NO LONGER PROTECTED BY THE LAW”, or free game for anyone who wants to hunt them down. Here is what they say and a little history! Outlaw An outlaw is a person declared as outside the protection of the law. In pre-modern societies, all legal protection was withdrawn from the criminal, so that anyone was legally empowered to persecute or kill them. Outlawry was thus one of the harshest penalties in the legal system. In early Germanic law, the death penalty is conspicuously absent, and outlawing is the most extreme punishment, presumably amounting to a death sentence in practice. The concept is known from Roman law, as the status of homo safer, and persisted throughout the Middle Ages. In the common law of England, a “Writ of Outlawry” made the pronouncement Caput lupinum (“Let his be a wolf’s head”, literally “May he bear a wolfish head”) with respect to its subject, using “head” to refer to the entire person (cf. “per capita”) and equating that person with a wolf in the eyes of the law: not only was the subject deprived of all legal rights, being outside the “law”, but others could kill him on sight as if he were a wolf or other wild animal. Women were declared “waived” rather than outlawed but it was effectively the same punishment. Chops 34

In English common law, an outlaw was a person who had defied the laws of the realm, by such acts as ignoring a summons to court, or fleeing instead of appearing to plead when charged with a crime. The earliest reference to outlawry in English legal texts appears in the 8th century. An outlaw might be killed with impunity, and it was not only lawful but meritorious to kill a thief fleeing from justice—to do so was not murder. A man who slew a thief was expected to declare the fact without delay, otherwise the dead man’s kindred might clear his name by their oath and require the slayer to pay weregild as for a true man. (Weregild, also known as man price (blood money), was a precept in some archaic legal codes whereby a monetary value was established for a person’s life, to be paid as a fine or as compensatory damages to the person’s family if that person was killed or injured by another.) By the rules of common law, a criminal outlaw did not need to be guilty of the crime for which he was an outlaw. If a man was accused of treason or felony but failed to appear in court to defend himself, he was deemed to be convicted of the said offence. If he was accused of a misdemeanor, then he was guilty of a serious contempt of court which was itself a capital crime. In the context of criminal law, outlawry faded out, not so much by legal changes as by the greater population density of the country, which made it harder for wanted fugitives to evade capture; and by the adoption of international extradition pacts. [citation needed] It was obsolete by the time the offence was abolished in 1938. Outlawry was, however, a living practice as of 1855: in 1841, William John Bankes, who had previously been an MP for several different constituencies between 1810 and 1835, was outlawed by due process of law for absenting himself from trial for homosexuality and died in 1855 in Venice as an outlaw. There was also a doctrine of civil outlawry. Civil outlawry did not carry the sentence of capital punishment. It was however imposed on defendants who fled (pg.46) Chops 35

not carry the sentence of capital punishment. It was however imposed on defendants who fled or evaded justice when sued for civil actions like debts or torts. The punishments for civil outlawry were nevertheless harsh, including confiscation of chattels (movable property) left behind by the outlaw. Though the judgment of outlawry is now obsolete (even though it inspired the pro forma Outlawries Bill which is still to this day introduced in the British House of Commons during the State Opening of Parliament), romanticised outlaws became stock characters in several fictional settings. This was particularly so in the United States, where outlaws were popular subjects of newspaper coverage and stories in the 19th century, and 20th century fiction and Western movies. Thus, “outlaw” is still commonly used to mean those violating the law or, by extension, those living that lifestyle, whether actual criminals evading the law or those merely opposed to “law-and-order” notions of conformity and authority (such as the “outlaw country” music movement in the 1970s). Which brings us to, what is an outlaw TODAY? Is it as the above paragraph says, “those opposed to law & order”, “not wanting to conform to authority”? And that an outlaw today may not even be a criminal. As this mag dealing mostly with biker stuff, I think there are many outlaws in our society that rides bikes, but there are many more who have never owned a motorcycle much less rode one, and the reason they are deemed outlaws, is because they DO question authority. Think back to when you were growing up. Remember the kid that questioned the teacher, the principle, the government on WHY should I do this? Why should I go along, or conform to what you say is correct, but I feel isn’t? If you were this kid or remember one who was, more than likely he grew up, or you did, as an outlaw in America. Outlaws question the laws pushed on them by people who know nothing Chops 46

about the real world. These aristocrats jerk our freedoms away by saying they want to implement safety on us. And it is a proven fact, once we loose a freedom, that was supposedly swapped for our own safety, it will hardly ever be given back. As bikers, we know the chance we take every time we straddle our bikes and take off. We understand the scenario of being run over, run off the road or have something thrown at us, harassed by some cops, and so on, HOWEVER we also know the feeling of freedom from riding our bikes, wherever and whenever we want. Today’s outlaws resist any freedom taken away from them because of some milque toast, lilly livered, momma’s boy who bought his way into office tells us, it’s NOT SAFE! How in the world would he know? Did he see it in a movie? Hear a sad story, what? Because he has no idea what he’s spewing out of his pie hole, and American Outlaws will ALWAYS question these self righteous ignorant people. To me that is what an outlaw is. Someone who questions authority! Fights for his freedom! Doesn’t want any government intervention, not even by the police (outlaws police their own). And to get back to what Wikipedia says, about how an outlaw looses the protection of the law, most today would say, so what, big deal, we can handle it ourselves. The only thing we can’t fight very successfully is the government and their branches that grow all the way down to the local police force. I am a firm believer in taking care of your own business, without any government agency’s getting involved and snooping around, cause we all know, once you get on “their” radar screen, you will be watched, maybe for life. Now, whether you agree with the dictionary, Wikipedia or me, that is okay, as I am sure there are many many answers to this question that popped into your mind, when you read the very first sentence. ~ Cochise P.S. I reckon the only people I know from the outlaw world that needs the law to protect them are rats, snakes and such. And good luck with that!!! Chops 47

By Ken Bradway Shortly after my Dad died, I went to the Nursing Home, to pick up his few remaining things that were in his closet. There want much there, as I expected but one thing really surprised me. Hung in the closet was an old Army winter trench coat. I knew my Dad had served in WW2, and fought his way through Europe, all the way to Paris, and was a veteran of The Bulge. But he never talked much about it to us growing up. He came home, and restarted his life in a furniture mill, and worked his way up to a foreman position, just living a quiet normal life. But this long battered coat, I’d never seen before. Where was it? And why had he kept it all these long years? I went thru the deep pockets, in one, was a hand drawn map, of a hilly terrain, with check marks and Xes placed. In another pocket was a crumpled and dog eared photograph of a young woman, whom I didn’t know, on the back it read “Love Marge.” That wasn’t my mother’s name. In the last pocket was a broken knife, that had been reground much shorter, I recognized it as a Randell knife, very old and very deadly. I took the few things home, and hung the old coat in back of my closet, I never tried it on, or took it off the hanger. It remains in darkness, some things in a man’s past, are best left that way. Maybe some of you remember these days, maybe not, I do! If you rode a motorcycle, especially a Harley Davidson, back in the 60’s and 70’s, you could have about any girl you wanted. Even the most uppitty ones, the snooty ones, yes the rich girls loved the bikers of that day, cause deep down in their soul they liked that bad boy image and dirty grimey look that was prominent back then. Those girls, both rich and poor wanted on the back of that scooter. Now, the regular sweethearts didn’t mind being seen riding with you, but the rich ones only came out at night, under the cover of darkness to be a part of your scene. Most just wanted to meet you somewhere out of town and do what you see above. Motorcycles were always chick magnets, and just like the bikers didn’t cull any of those ladies, neither did the ladies cull any bikers. The crazier looking, the more hair you had and the greaser your pants, BAM! Chops 62
