Thank you all for coming out to the Shovelhead Showcase that we put on at The Boot Hill Saloon back on September the 5th. I was overwhelmed at the number of local Shovelheads that showed up; how about “53”?!!!? And another 35 antique bikes and Evo/TC Choppers!!! My family was so proud of you all. I pray to God that each and everyone of you realize how much we love our community and YOU!!! When posting on social media, I always mention my location, which is “Beautiful Daytona Beach”. It doesn’t matter to me about the politics here or who is in charge and who is not, because it’s the “real people” who make our area the very best, and that my friends is YOU!!! My family is proud of where we live, PERIOD!!! Someone mentioned crime? Thank the good Lord above you don’t live in Orlando, San Francisco, NYC or Chicago WHEN it comes to crime, or any town for that matter. Yes we have crime, homelessness, azzholes and corruption in the ranks of the hierarchy of politics, but tell me where there isn’t! Daytona is my home, and for those visiting this month for Biketoberfest, WELCOME to our house! Please leave us the way you found us, and if you do “show out” while here, acting like a teenager on prom night, expect the consequences there of. Rest In Peace Officer Jason Raynor! May justice be served quickly on your assassin! Our community is better than that. And for those who live here year around, we all grieve with your mother & sister. Also, I heard that my old buddy Sidecar Willie passed away. He was the founder of A.N.U.S., the Unicycle races that started out in Samsula. I had already placed his picture, along with Hot Rod’s in this issue before his death, as they were sitting in front of the Patch for MaryAnn’s retirement party. You will be missed my friend!!! As the Holy Spirit tugs at your heart, like He’s doing right now, telling you, you need Salvation, you must come humbly to God in prayer asking for forgiveness of all past sins, (name them if you can, I couldn’t) and then receiving Christ Jesus into your heart, to become your Savior and advocate that speaks on your behalf to God the Father. Born again, means through Christ you become a member of the family of God! Dear God forgive me of my sins, I accept Jesus!

The Loops We Ride!!! There are basically 3 loops we ride here in the Daytona area, and it’s just pretty much up to whoever is leading that day on where we go. Everyone knows “The” Loop! Take A1A North to High Bridge Rd, go left and follow the scenic route signs. This will bring you back into Ormond Beach at the corner of Riverside Dr. & Granada Ave. It will be ridden by thousands during the event, so be vigilante!!! The South loop takes you South on Hwy.1 down through Edgewater, FL into Oak Hill, where you make a right onto Maytown Rd. It will take you on a route that shows you the real Florida. Be sure to watch and obey the suggested speed limit signs before entering a curve. If it says 15 MPH, that’s what you need to be doing, I promise. This loop will bring you out in Osteen, Florida onto Hwy. 415. Turn right to go to the Foxhead or left to go see Sanford, FL. Then there is the route that we call the Western loop, and will again show you what the true Florida looks like. You can begin by heading West on Hwy. 44, this takes you past Mike’s Corner (Eagle’s Nest) and on out through Samsula. Go through Deland, FL over the St. John’s river and make a right on County Road 42. Be sure to stop at the Pirate’s Pub for a refreshment. This is one of the coolest bars around and a favorite destination every weekend to hundreds of riders. Continue on till you come to Hwy 19 in Altoona, and make a right. Watch for CR 445, or signs pointing out Alexander Springs and turn right. This is a great ride. Just past the entrance to the springs (on the left), you can pull over on the right side of the road and walk down to the water. You use to be able to ride down there, but some people littered so much they closed it off to the bikes. 445 will dead end on 445A so make a right and then it immediately turns into Hwy 40. Go East to get back to Ormond Beach. There is a good place to eat on the way back in, called Castaways, (Great Food) and then there is ice cream on the left as you’re coming into Astor. Look for it and if you stop, you won’t be disappointed. We ride this route the most. ENJOY! Chops 12

The Watering Holes: Of course The Legendary Boot Hill Saloon on Main St. is out largest advertiser and the place to go to on Main St. Always an inviting atmosphere, with cold drinks and hot barmaids. Speedway Bar, formerly The Oyster Bay, is on beachside on ISB. As you cross the bridge look for them on the right heading East. This bar has been around forever, and under new ownership. A place were the real locals hangout for a cold beer. Cross back over the bridge, and turn left onto Beach St. and go South to the corner of Beach & Bellview Ave, and on the left side is the famous Ed Walden’s Bar. Stop in and have a cold one. A great local place with cool owners and patrons. Take Bellview West to Ridgewood (Hwy.1) and turn left. Look for the Boat Bar just South of Commonwealth, on the left. Another local bar were the cool people sit and drink a cold beer while fellowshiping. Head back North on Hwy. 1 towards Ormond Beach. Look for the Iron Horse Saloon on the left, the Beaver Bar & the Broken Spoke on the right, but if you keep going, about 1/2 mile before you get to I-95, look right and find Annie Oakleys on the right. This is a beautiful small bar, that serves mixed drinks and cold beer. Keep rolling on Hwy. 1 North into Bunnell and take a left on Hwy. 11 (11 turns into Hwy. 17) and head over to OB’s place in Deland. It’s on the right as you come into town, you can’t miss it. Great food, drinks and fellowship. As you leave, do me a favor and take Hwy. 92 (ISB) left off of Hwy. 17 South go down to Jacobs Rd (towards the High School) until it comes to Hwy. 44 (New York Ave.) and turn left. About 1/2 mile down on the right is a small bar called Pat’s Place. The owners here are friends and great people. Please stop in and say hey and patronize them. Go West on Hwy. 44 to West CR. 42 and stop by the Pirate’s Pub!!! Chops 13

Rolling Stone Magazine Ranked Them 82nd On Its 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time. Creedence Clearwater Revival, also referred to as Creedence and CCR, was an American rock band that recorded and performed from 1959 to 1972 under various names before settling on the Creedence Clearwater Revival name in 1967. The band initially consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter John Fogerty; his brother, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty; bassist Stu Cook; and drummer Doug Clifford. These members had played together since 1959, first as the Blue Velvets and later as the Golliwogs. Though from California, the band often played in a Southern rock style, with lyrics about bayous, catfish, the Mississippi River and other elements of Southern United States iconography. CCR’s musical style encompassed roots rock, swamp rock, blues rock, Southern rock, country rock, and blue-eyed soul. The band’s songs rarely dealt with romantic love, concentrating instead on political and socially conscious lyrics about topics such as the Vietnam War. The band performed at the 1969 Woodstock festival in Upstate New York, and was the first major act signed to appear there. CCR disbanded acrimoniously in late 1972 after four years of charttopping success. Tom Fogerty had officially left the previous year, and John was at odds with the remaining members over matters of business and artistic control, all of which resulted in subsequent lawsuits among the former bandmates. Fogerty’s ongoing disagreements with Fantasy Records owner Saul Zaentz created further protracted court battles, and John Fogerty refused to perform with the two other surviving members at Creedence’s 1993 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though the band has never officially reunited, John Fogerty continues to perform CCR songs as part of his solo act, while Cook and Clifford have performed as Creedence Clearwater Revisited since the 1990s. CCR’s music is still a staple of U.S. classic rock radio airplay; 28 million CCR records have been sold in the U.S. alone. The compilation album Chronicle The 20 Greatest Hits, originally released in 1976, is still on the Billboard 200 album chart and reached the 500-weeks mark Chops 21

This is a picture of the redneck, that wore the Cat hat in the movie Easyrider, from the restaurant scene, taken in 1999, 30 years after the movies release. He has passed away now, but was a town icon in Morganza, Louisiana for his scene stealing lines in the movie. My friend Kenny who took this pic says, Catman still looked like he could whip a man pretty good! I believe they said he was 80 years old in the pic. Would you have done what Billy did and “FLIP” this guy off? This is David C. Billodeau, and this was his only acting role. He fit the bill with his looks for sure. The man driving the truck was Johnny David, it was his one and only job as an actor as well. It takes a very brave or stupid person to flip off a man who has a shotgun pointed at you. Which one was Billy? Which one are you? I hope you never have to make that decision!!!

Behind the Scenes of Easy Rider!!! According to Terry Southern’s, (a co-writer of the movie), biographer, Lee Hill, the part of George Hanson had been written for Southern’s friend, actor Rip Torn. When Torn met with Hopper and Fonda at a New York restaurant in early 1968 to discuss the role, Hopper began ranting about the “rednecks” he had encountered on his scouting trip to the South. Torn, a Texan, took exception to some of Hopper’s remarks, and the two almost came to blows, as a result of which Torn withdrew from the project. Torn was replaced by Jack Nicholson, whom Hopper had recently appeared with in Head (along with another Easy Rider co-star, Toni Basil). In 1994, Jay Leno interviewed Hopper about Easy Rider on The Tonight Show, and during the interview, Hopper falsely claimed that Torn had pulled a knife on him during the altercation when it was actually the other way around. This infuriated Torn, so he sued Hopper for defamation seeking punitive damages. Torn ultimately prevailed against Hopper on all counts. ( YEAH, BUT HE LOST THE PART......LOL ~Cochise) Most of the film is shot outside with natural lighting. Hopper said all the outdoor shooting was an intentional choice on his part, because “God is a great gaffer.” The production used two five-ton trucks, one for the equipment and one for the motorcycles, with the cast and crew in a motor home. One of the locations was Monument Valley. Peter Fonda wanted Crosby Stills & Nash to do the soundtrack. Dennis Hopper refused, telling the band that anyone who drove around in limos as they did had no comprehension of the film, telling them, “If you guys try to get into the studio again, I may have to cause you some bodily harm.” Peter Fonda got the idea for this movie after seeing a picture of he and Bruce Dern on their motorcycles. He got Dennis Hopper (who was planning to get out of the acting business and become a teacher at the time) involved when he promised him he could direct the film. While the actors smoked real marijuana, the cocaine seen at the start of the film is fake. According to Peter Fonda, this is because they Chops 26
couldn’t afford the real thing. Captain America’s (Peter Fonda’s) chopper was so “squirrely” to ride that at one point, Jack Nicholson (who was on the back) squeezed his knees on Fonda’s side to balance himself and broke one of Fonda’s ribs. During one meeting at Columbia, Dennis Hopper stood up and stuffed his finger in an executive’s nose. While filming in the South, the crew were intimidated by locals. Dennis Hopper entered a bar and a man took a swing at him. Behind him was the Sheriff. As a joke, Hopper said, “Hi there, I’m hitchhiking to the peace march”, whereupon eight men jumped him. A paranoid Dennis Hopper demanded that cameraman Barry Feinstein hand over all the footage he’d shot, so he could keep it safe in his room. An enraged Fernstein hurled the film cans at him, and the two got into a brawl and fell through the door of one of the motel rooms. They got up and stared at the sight of Peter Fonda in bed with Karen Black and Toni Basil (though Black denied this). Fernstein wasn’t distracted for long, and threw a television set at Hopper. Dennis Hopper, Karen Black, and cinematographer László Kovács all subsequently died of cancer at the age of seventy-four. When Peter Fonda wrote the script he imagined the two main characters were modern day cowboys roaming the west, so he named them Billy (Billy the Kid) and Wyatt (Wyatt Earp). The original title of the film was “The Loners”. Stephen Stills wrote the song “Find the Cost of Freedom” at Dennis Hopper’s request, for use with the final scene (when the camera pans up into the sky). Hopper ended up not using it, and the song was eventually released as the B-side to Crosby Stills Nash & Young’s single “Ohio”. Crosby Stills Nash & Young often used it to close their concerts. When Bianca and I first met her, she was the owner/operator of a Party store on Canal St. in New Smyrna Beach. After that we’d see her out at different places riding her Softtail and just having a good time, and periodically I would see her bartending, and them BAM, she’s at the Cabbage Patch, for good!!! MaryAnn is not only a staple at the Patch, but all over the Daytona area, as she is known for always helping others, and that beautiful smile. She just retired from the CP, so look out NOW! Chops 30

1970, Point Defiance Park Tacoma, WA. I was in the Army there, at Ft.Lewis, and on Saturday afternoons I liked to hang out at the snack bar and have a few drafts and just get away from the post. There was a few bikers that hung out there as well, one guy I distinctly remembered as The Kid. He wasn’t a kid, really, just looked it. He was a wrench at a car dealership, was a vet, and rode a funky hopped up Harley K Model. Painted British Racing Green, it had a bright red letter K on the tank, and the Kid called the bike Special K like the breakfast cereal at the time. The bike was hot, and the Kid could ride it, and the bets were made, that no one could ride the concrete sea wall along the small beach there. The sea wall was about 3 ft wide, and on the right side was even with the grass but on the left side it dropped about 5 feet into Puget Sound incoming tide. The wall had a smooth top and had a gentle curve off to the right for about 500ft until it ended at a level on the beach. Many had tried to ride it before, but none had been successful. Some had gone to the grassy side, and some into the surf. The Kid took the challenge, fired the old flathead and rode down to where the wall began on level ground. He rolled up onto the wall, and off he went at a pretty good clip over the top, following the curve right to the end and onto the beach. At the beach he tipped the throttle and dug a large rooster tail into the parking lot. He’d done it. Even made it look easy. But it wasn’t, and nobody had done it before. The bets were paid off, and the Kid bought a round for the bar. ********** Back in 1970, there was an established well know bike club around the city. It was exclusive and required 100% vote in to be a dues paying member. Then there was a loose group of young roosters that just hung out together rode motorcycles and decided they would form a club. The Kid was a part of that group. He was a ex army vet, and a mechanic at a Mercedes-Benz dealership. He rode an older Harley K Model that was painted British Racing Green, and had a red big K on the tank, like the old cereal Special K. And that’s what he called the bike Special K. Chops 46
One night the group stopped at a local dive called the Dusty Cup not knowing the other club would show up soon after they did. There was a ruckus, glass broke, tables turned over, and some busted lips and knuckles followed until the word came down, the cops were on the way. As they all, split. The Kids Special K wouldn’t start. Seems he flooded it, which was easy with the oversized Tillotson carburetor he’d installed. He kicked and kicked but to no avail. With sirens wailing in the distance the group begged him to go with them riding bitch, but the Kid wouldn’t go. He wouldn’t leave his Special K behind. Seems the cops would take it out on left over bikes with flashlights and nightsticks, and the Kid wouldn’t have it. The Kid did 6 months in the can over it, the roosters put the K in someone’s basement. Now thats Bikin and Bikers. ~By Ken Bradway ********** He was known as The Diamond T Man at the little independent truck stop where he fueled, ate and often parked the big red tractor when he took some time off. It was said he bought the last one made, a 1970 model, with a Dog Hole 36” sleeper, and a 232” wheelbase. A Cummins diesel, and 10 gears to roll thru with 1200 20 tires on Dayton rims. Old school, just like he was. He was well known out on the slab for his active role on the CB, his helpful attitude, and generosity toward other truckers travelers and those that needed something he had. There was even a story about the clean dry shirt he offered a sunburned biker right off his back. I know it’s true, because I was that biker. As it goes in life, he sort of faded away, got old, sick, maybe retired, I don’t really know. But for sure he left a mark on that concrete, maybe some oil, maybe some rubber, and like the black diesel smoke, he left behind, it’s all gone now. I still have that shirt he gave me, it’s way to big, and it’s tucked away in my closet, it saved me from a serious situation where I had many miles to go. He cared, he stopped, and helped me get going again. We sure could use more out there today, like the Diamond T Man. ~ By Ken Bradway Chops 47
