Son Of A Bitch!!! What in the world is going on???? Two more local brothers, local icons were killed in two different motorcycle wrecks the same day, Cap in Deland and Big Steve on a vacation ride up in TN!!! I know the older we get the more death we see, but this is getting old!!!

Both of these men were Big Players in the biker world here and their shoes will NOT be easily filled. Cap was everywhere!!! He made ALL the rides and Steve was the long time manager at the infamous Iron Horse

Saloon, yes the hard nosed big man that kept things going, but as the employees all agreed on, Steve was a big ole teddy bear.

I know that by the time you read this, their memorials will have already happened, but the mourning of their loved ones for these men will still be happening for years to come, so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. God bless you Suzy Q, you were Cap’s everything and he was yours. Know that we all love you and are here for you. And Ms. Debbie, you too have been a pillar of unmovable love and friendship to so many for so long, and that you and Big Steve were very much in love, that I hope you know all those whom you have loved is here for you now. May both of you dear woman lean on us in this very difficult time. As we all loved Cap and Steve, we all love you two as well.

Willie is still on the mend, as of this writing (June 9th, the day of Cap’s Memorial at OB’s), he is getting stronger everyday. He even was able to muster up enough strength to go and help place a cross at the accident scene on June 6th. It was the first time he had been out, except for doctor and hospital visits.

I lost another very dear brother on June 5th, Brother Tony Ratliff from Columbus, OH. He was a GREAT man of faith, but also a biker who squeezed every drop of life out of everyday. Though a frail looking man, because of all the chemo and radiation performed on him, Tony was only about 5’8” and weighted maybe a buck thirty, he was one tough son of a gun. I worked with him one week, and though small in stature and fighting cancer, I swear he could work many 30 year olds in the ground, as he did me!!! Rest In Peace Great Man Of Faith!!

Gods Corner August 28th Benefit Concert For Willie At The Iron Horse Saloon I traveled to Dayton, VA to preach a weekend revival there. It was the 3rd time at The Home Church, for me, and as usual, they were great host and seemed to really like the messages as I challenged them on being a Christian witness to their friends and families, especially their children & grandchildren. My Sunday message was on Soul Winning, that most churches never mention anymore. I don’t understand this.

Acts 1:8 says to go and be witnesses after receiving the Holy Spirit. It took a tragedy before the church at that time did just that, as it was fulfilled in Acts 8:1. Read also Judges 2:10, “there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel (America)”. Has He blessed you, saved you, then tell others what He did, cause only He could do that!!! ~ Cochise

WHY DOGS LIVE LESS THAN HUMANS Here’s the surprising answer of a 6 year old child.

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-yearold Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure.

They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that dogs’ lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ”I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said, ”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The six-year-old continued, ”Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do.”

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

• Never pretend to be something you’re not.

• If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

• When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

Chopper/Motorcycle: A chopper is a type of custom motorcycle which emerged in California in the late 1950s. A chopper employs radically modified steering angles and lengthened forks for a stretched-out appearance. They can be built from an original motorcycle which is modified (“chopped”) or built from scratch. Some of the characteristic features of choppers are long front ends with extended forks often coupled with an increased rake angle, hardtail frames (frames without rear suspension), very tall “ape hanger” or very short “drag” handlebars, lengthened or stretched frames, and larger than stock front wheels. The “sissy bar”, a set of tubes that connect the rear fender with the frame, and which are often extended several feet high, is a signature feature on many choppers. Two famous examples of the chopper are customised Harley-Davidsons, the “Captain America” and “Billy Bike”, seen in the 1969 film Easy Rider. (From 1960’s)

RIP Big Steve Fritz! You were a real man, hard nosed, but gentle when need be. I’ve watched as you have had to handle a problem at the bar with loud, rowdy patrons, (for 30 years), that brought out the no nonsense side of you. The times I experienced this, you treated every person that tried you, the same, even friends. Always level headed.

But I’ve also watched you with that grand baby, as she undoubtably had you wrapped around her little finger. She brought out that gentle side!

Steve, you will be remembered for all the hard work you did during the events, always the same, “Never Sweating It”!!! Much Love & Respect Brother! Our family sends condolences to Debbie, the family, all the employees at the Iron Horse and the many, many friends of Big Steve’s!!!

Blue and Gray all veterans of the bloody fighting that occurred at Gettysburg meet as Americans shaking hands fifty years later--not as enemies, but as Americans.

Interesting Things I Found On the Internet: Outlaw motorcycle club: This article is about non-AMA sanctioned motorcycle clubs.

An outlaw motorcycle club, commonly referred to as a biker gang, is a motorcycle subculture. It is generally centered on the use of cruiser motorcycles, particularly Harley-Davidsons and choppers, and a set of ideals that purport to celebrate freedom, nonconformity to mainstream culture, and loyalty to the biker group.

In the United States, such motorcycle clubs (MCs) are considered “outlaw” not necessarily because they engage in criminal activity, but because they are not sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and do not adhere to the AMA’s rules. Instead the clubs have their own set of bylaws reflecting the outlaw biker culture.

The U.S. Department of Justice defines “outlaw motorcycle gangs” (OMG) as “organizations whose members use their motorcycle clubs as conduits for criminal enterprises” Subculture: A subculture is a group of people within a culture that differentiates itself from the parent culture to which it belongs, often maintaining some of its founding principles. Subcultures develop their own norms and values regarding cultural, political, and sexual matters. Subcultures are part of society while keeping their specific characteristics intact. Examples of subcultures include hippies, goths, bikers, and skinheads. The concept of subcultures was developed in sociology and cultural studies. Subcultures differ from countercultures.

Counterculture: Not to be confused with Anti-social behaviour or Countercult.

A counterculture is a culture whose values and norms of behavior differ substantially from those of mainstream society, sometimes diametrically opposed to mainstream cultural mores. A countercultural movement expresses the ethos and aspirations of a specific population during a well-defined era. When oppositional forces reach critical mass, countercultures can trigger dramatic cultural changes.

Prominent examples of countercultures in the Western world include Chops 25

the Levellers (1645–1650), Bohemianism (1850–1910), the Nonconformists of the 1930s, the more fragmentary counterculture of the Beat Generation (1944–1964), followed by the globalized counterculture of the 1960s (1964–1974), usually associated with the hippie subculture as well as the diversified punk subculture of the 1970s and 1980s.

The Levellers were a political movement during the English Civil War (1642–1651) committed to popular sovereignty, extended suffrage, equality before the law and religious tolerance. The hallmark of Leveller thought was its populism, as shown by its emphasis on equal natural rights, and their practice of reaching the public through pamphlets, petitions and vocal appeals to the crowd.

Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people and with few permanent ties. It involves musical, artistic, literary, or spiritual pursuits. In this context, bohemians may be wanderers, adventurers, or vagabonds.

The Non-conformists of the 1930s were groups and individuals during the inter-war period in Interwar France that were seeking new solutions to face the political, economical and social crisis. The name was coined in 1969 by the historian Jean-Louis Loubet del Bayle to describe a movement which revolved around Emmanuel Mounier’s personalism. They attempted to find a “third (communitarian) alternative” between socialism and capitalism, and opposed both liberalism/parliamentarism/democracy and fascism.

The Beat Generation was a literary movement started by a group of authors whose work explored and influenced American culture and politics in the post-war era. The bulk of their work was published and popularized throughout the 1950s. The central elements of Beat culture are the rejection of standard narrative values, making a spiritual quest, the exploration of American and Eastern religions, the rejection of economic materialism, explicit portrayals of the human condition, experimentation with psychedelic drugs, and sexual liberation and exploration.

The counterculture of the 1960s was an anti-establishment cultural phenomenon that developed throughout much of the Western world between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s. The aggregate movement gained momentum as the U.S. Civil Rights Movement continued to Chops 26

grow, and, with the expansion of the American Government’s extensive military intervention in Vietnam, would later become revolutionary to some. As the 1960s progressed, widespread social tensions also developed concerning other issues, and tended to flow along generational lines regarding human sexuality, women’s rights, traditional modes of authority, experimentation with psychoactive drugs, and differing interpretations of the American Dream. Many key movements related to these issues were born or advanced within the counterculture of the 1960s. As the era unfolded, what emerged were new cultural forms and a dynamic subculture that celebrated experimentation, modern incarnations of Bohemianism, and the rise of the hippie and other alternative lifestyles. This embrace of creativity is particularly notable in the works of musical acts such as the Beatles and Bob Dylan, as well as of New Hollywood filmmakers, whose works became far less restricted by censorship.

Within and across many disciplines, many other creative artists, authors, and thinkers helped define the counterculture movement. Everyday fashion experienced a decline of the suit and especially of the wearing of hats; styles based around jeans, for both men and women, became an important fashion movement that has continued up to the present day.

Several factors distinguished the counterculture of the 1960s from the anti-authoritarian movements of previous eras. The post-World War II baby boom generated an unprecedented number of potentially disaffected youth as prospective participants in a rethinking of the direction of the United States and other democratic societies. Postwar affluence allowed much of the counterculture generation to move beyond the provision of the material necessities of life that had preoccupied their Depression-era parents. The era was also notable in that a significant portion of the array of behaviors and “causes” within the larger movement were quickly assimilated within mainstream society, particularly in the US, even though counterculture participants numbered in the clear minority within their respective national populations. In general, the counterculture era commenced in earnest with the assassination of John F. Kennedy in November 1963; became absorbed into the popular culture with the termination of U.S. combat military involvement in Southeast Asia; and ultimately concluded with the end of the draft in 1973 and the resignation of President Richard Nixon in August 1974.

My Trip To Tennessee: Well, I pulled out of the house mid morning on a Thursday headed to a town Northwest of Nashville where my son and his family reside. It was a pretty uneventful day, other than I found out there is a difference between State Road 19 and US 19. I ran out Hwy 40 and went north on what I thought was the 19 that would take me into Georgia all the way to Atlanta (I wanted to run all secondary roads), instead I wind back around into Palatka and Hwy 100, so I shot up 100 and hit US 41 for a bit, and by then I was running way behind, so I hit I-75, even though I didn’t want to.

I was riding the 1996 Softtail Fat Boy I bought for Bianca. This was my first Evo Softtail, and I wasn’t use to the vibration at about 80 MPH’s, so the farther I went, the more it was affecting my 66 year old body. I was determined to get North of Atlanta before pulling over for the night, though I wanted to ride all the way through. My spirit which is eternal, lives for ever and knows no age said, “You can do this young man”, but my body, which isn’t eternal and will crash and burn one day said, “Your old, pull over”, so I did. At 512 miles from the house I pulled into a motel that my family had stayed at before. The funny thing was, I paid more for the room as a single occupant than I did with three of us, but I was to tired to argue (a first for me) and to weary to go looking for something less expensive. So I crashed for the night.

The next morning, I sought out some form of breakfast, I mean the price was higher now than before, when a complimentary breakfast was available, but I found nothing but a $2 Smart water and a package of brown sugar and cinnamon Pop Tarts. I ate that, loaded up and pulled off for my final destination, to see my son, his wife and those 3 beautiful, precious grandbabies, which included the littlest, my grandson, Olliejames, who is a hoot!!! Rose and Kynlee were glad to see Poppa, but Olliejames was really glad to see me, as he really only knows me through facetime on the phones.

I pulled into their home around 3pm Friday and immediately took a nap. I told you I’m getting old!!! I played with the boy and the 2 girls, then my son came home and we ordered some very good thin crust (better for us diabetics) Poppa John’s pizza, and sit around and just plain ole enjoyed one another’s presence. I was missing my Florida family, cause I knew they would love to have been there with me, Chops 28

hanging with us all.

Woke up Saturday morning to the surprise visit of one of my KY daughters and 3 of her 4 babies. WOW!!! I had “6” G Babies all in my presence, all at one time!!! I have 3 here in Florida and that’s always a blast, but 6!!!

After spending time together with them, I gave away all my hugs and kisses, and after a few pics taken I loaded up to go to my final, final destination, Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, to do the Sunday morning worship service. I was able to ride secondary roads all the way there.

I stopped on top of this one hill in Ashland City, TN to ask for positive directions, I still don’t know how to use that I Phone GPS, and my GPS (New Smyrna Beach Jimmy) wasn’t with me and I left my Atlas at home, but, Oh Boy, did I ran into a surprise. I will try to include some pictures of it. I mean you wouldn’t believe this place! Old pop machines, gas pumps and beautiful antique cars and trucks.

I left from there and within 1 hour I arrived in Hurricane Mills where the event, The Tennessee Music and Motorcycle Revival was! The headliner, believe it or NOT was NOT Willie and Me, but Billy Gibbons of ZZ TOP fame, with a new band/venture he is trying out called BGG! The funny thing about this whole deal was even though I saw some people I hadn’t seen in awhile, like Big Paul from St. Louis and Bro. Jeff, who I think lives in OH now, I mostly saw and hung out with my neighbors from here in the Daytona area, 800 mile ride to see my friends, LOL! One quick story. I camped beside Van from NY but didn’t pay any attention to ALL my surroundings, so at about 8:30PM I went to my bike, where I had designed a “lean to” with a tarp, and placed my sleeping equipment under, to take my insulin shot and my nightly array of prescription meds. After swallowing them and properly disposing of my needle, I decided to take a short nap, before Billy Gibbons played. I fell asleep, but when I woke up, it was still daylight.

I thought I had slept about one hour, but? So I went back to sleep.

When I was shaken from my slumber, by a now “dead asleep” left arm (which I laid on wrong), it was STILL daylight. I knew something was amiss, so I picked up my phone and hit the on button and it was 2AM!!! What in the world, it was still daylight, man I was confused Chops 29

bad!!!

As I said, I never noticed the surroundings of my one night lay down place, other than other tents and pick up trucks, and of course motorcycles, BUT guess what? I placed my scooter and tent right under generator powered lights, that lit up the whole area, around me. I never even heard the generator kick on, so I slept through the concert, and pretty well the Saturday night party. I justified it, by saying, “The ole body knew what it needed, rest & sleep”!!!

After taking a “baby wipe” bath the next morning, I moseyed on down to where “church” was to take place. To my surprise and a lack of communication, the people there the “Redeemtion Sons Christian M/C” didn’t know I was to speak. I felt embarrassed and apologized and told them, it’s cool I’ll just listen to whomever they had to bring the message. But, I think they felt bad that I had ridden over 800 miles to do such, so they worked me in. That was very nice and Christianly of the man in charge, Hurley. So I brought the message on Free Will, stayed to hear the other gentleman speak, and he did a fantastic job, then got on my old Evo Fat Boy and headed home.

I rode straight through this time, 765 miles in about 14 hours, shorter than going up because I came home on the interstates. I had to stop about every 90 miles to get gas, as my petcock wasn’t working properly and I had no reserve, and this slowed me down, that and a 20 mile back up South of Atlanta because of construction (on a Sunday...argh)!!!

When I was 210 miles from Bianca and the Sugar Baby, I thought I was going to have to pull over at a rest area and sleep for a bit, but I know how my power naps turn into 2 hour ones, I fought on through my weariness.

I have ridden rubber mounted Harleys since the early 90’s except for my rigid frame Choppers, so I wasn’t use to the serious motor vibrations on the Evolution Softtails, you see the Twin Cam Softtails have balanced engines to stop the vibes. So at 80 MPH my mirrors were blurred, and I ran about 80 most of the time. So those same vibrations going through my mirrors were going through my body, and it did take a toil on me. Was it worth it? Yes! Will I do it again, (800 miles in one day)? Let me pray about that question, LOL. Chops 30

So what was my opinion of the ride, the bike, my visits, the venue and returning home?

The Ride: Other than the misleading of the FL 19 & US 19, and the tremendous back up South of Atlanta, the ride was good. The vibraSome Of Daytona Red’s Friends tions were definitely causing some undue stress on my body, BUT if I had of stuck to my original plan, of riding all secondary roads, I would have done fine. For years, I think due to riding with clubs, wide open on mostly the “big” roads, at 90 MPH, I was just a traveler, but in the last 20 years I am now more of a sightseer. I like to slow down and see where I am and what I might find. You never know, you may run across an old Panhead or a ‘55 Chevy sitting in someone’s yard out in “podunk hollar” at a great buy, yes I am dreaming a bit.

But the ride for me is seeing the sites, not just busting through and missing so much of this great country we live in.

The Bike: It was a 25 year old motorcycle, a 1996 Harley Fat Boy, evolution engine, which I believe, and will till the end, is the BEST motor ever build by the factory! Some say Harley died when we switched from the cast iron to the aluminum engines, but we all know that’s not true. The Evolution Motor saved them, and perhaps the latter 80 CI Shovelheads. The Evo will never be called “old iron” because it is aluminum, but they are the best. People who want to argue this, just drop in behind any Evo I own and stay with me for a day, 600 to 700 miles a day, then do it again the next day, and then do it again..... you get the point, Call my son in law in KY, he’ll tell you how we use to ride an average of 600 miles a day for a week at a time, and those motors never left us stranded, well only once when I dropped a valve while racing in TX and once when a wrist pin clip came loose, but we could still ride it, it was just noisy.

My Visit: I have pretty well covered this. My FAMILY is the most important people in my life. Just wish I’d seen the other 3 Grands!!!

The Venue: It was on a creek bed with rock and sand roads, which made it kind of hard to ride on, and very, very dusty, but overall, it was worth the ride.

My Return Home: Believe it or not Bianca and the Sugar Baby missed me and was glad to see Daddy, even at 1AM in the morning. I think one or two of my friends missed me too, but they’d never tell me, LOL!!! Hope you enjoyed the story, be blessed & get out & go riding!

My Calling, Cochise I have never understood why God chose me, a country boy that was reared on a dead end gravel road, that you had to travel 4 miles to get to the blacktop highway, then another 20 miles to the city. Why me Lord?!?

I can’t remember the exact time the bug bite me, but it did and it was hard. I knew immediately what I was to become, but it seemed so far fetched from my world of reality, because no one else in my area of the county or in the city seemed to be doing what I was destined to become.

Shoot, I don’t recall ever seeing another person with the drive to do what the Lord had placed on my mind to do. I saw a couple of people that may have wanted to do it, and had the proper tools to do such, but I never met one personally like me.

I think of a day in 1965 when I truly saw a man that I thought I wanted to be. He dressed the part, but that look just wasn’t in his eyes. Another time my daddy and momma took us to some families house, I think for a car deal, and I remember momma saying that had a bunch of children, something like 12 or 13.

I went to school with a couple of them, but the oldest, the biggest brother was the one who caught my eye that day we visited them.

He had the look and the swagger, I could see it and was drawn to him, but he wasn’t to much interested in hearing my line of questioning about, have you ever been to California? Florida?

The places I see in the magazines? He was probably 15 years older than me, and at that time I was probably 12, so he just took his hand and kind of mussed up my hair and smiled as he went into their house.

Then 1966, we had a new student enter out 7th grade class, that spoke of his father who was the “real deal’, now whether he was or not, I never knew, and lost contact with Gary after the 8th grade. Yet, the stories he told us as we sit upon the hill Chops 34

at our elementary school, the farthest place being out of sight from any authoritative eyes, like our teacher Mr. Murphy who could swing a mean azz “board of education, and the principle, Mr. Pete, as we lit up one cigarette after another listening to Gary Trent talk about his dad and the crazy things he did as a part of a group of men, (at that time), that you either admired or despised.

When I went in the Army in ‘73 I met another man, he was called Harry and from South Cally, and he was what appeared to be what I wanted to become. He told me story after story of the huge venues he attended and often times he was talking to, persuading others to follow him and his beliefs and how hundreds did. He was a charismatic leader and even as a diesel mechanic stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY he drew 20 or 30 men together to listen to his gospel of freedom and brotherhood. I got to know Harry very well, and we would go to the NCO club and play pinball, drink beer and watch others shoot pool, but while there he was mentoring me on how to act around this chosen group of men whom many knew very little about in their personal lives, why? Because they were so scrutinized by the average Joe, they kept only to themselves until it was time to get out and up to do the thing they were preordained to become. I learned a lot form Spec. 5 Harry B, who was 5 or 6 years older than me, first and foremost, RESPECT, learn to give it and then demand it, if need be. He said, “Many will never understand you Powell but make them want to be you by carrying yourself in a way that others want to follow, and they will!”

When I got out of the service, I yearned to fulfill my dream, and even met some like minded people in my hometown, but they, again, didn’t have it in them, so we only hung out downtown from time to time, talking it but never walking it. Many times while I sit there with them, I would think about Harry, Gary Trent’s dad and the scene in Southern California or in New York City.

I was already married by now and children were coming, beautiful babies that filled much of the void inside of me.....Page 39 Chops 35

that could only be completely filled by answering the call, but when? When would I finally go and do my thing, answer the voice that was beckoning me from 20 years ago?

Remember, many are called, but few are chosen, why? Because even though it is a rewarding vocation, it’s like swimming in a small fish bowl, with no place to hide! All eyes are always on you, even to the point were many who live this precarious lifestyle have to take long sabbaticals to get away from the harsh judgement of those who don’t understand the “call”.

The calling!!! God chooses all sorts for this worthy but worldly lifestyle. He looks on the heart of a man, NOT on the outward appearance. Tall, short, fat, skinny, ugly, pretty, red, yellow, black and white, they are ALL beautiful in His sight!

Even though I have never reached the pinnacle of my calling, as marriages and babies kept me from totally fulfilling my destiny, I have been from time to time able to get out and do much more than others who have been called, only because He put good understanding women and children in my life. I have been afforded the opportunity to get out on the highways and the byways and do my thing, to relish in the anointing from an upward call to be, at times, a lone wolf, and yet at times the leader of the pack.

As I start to close down my life and complete my desire to be the man I was destined to be, I think about all the great opportunities I missed, that I forfeited and stayed home, (which I regret) but also think on and cherish the many great memories that I have forever stowed away in the deepest part of my inner being.

I can’t do what I use to do, not only because of certain health issues, but because my body just doesn’t allow me to pour 110% of my soul into this love anymore. I hate it, but it is reality. I use to go on and on, with great stamina and could recoup immediately, even after pushing myself to go a little farther, just a little farther. “You can do it”, is what I would tell myself as Chops 39

I would seem to have an out of body experience, were I could almost stand to the side and watch my own self, doing my thing.

You can do it! But when the day wound down, after a long outing, my body was tired, really tired. The stamina is gone! No recuperation as fast as before, sometimes taking me days to getting back to normal.

I lay in bed now, thinking to myself, “Is it worth it, really worth it?” Do I need to stop all together? What do I have to prove? I have been doing the this for over 50 years, what else can I do to top that? Maybe I’ll just slow down.

Then the phone rings!!! “You want to come up where we live and do your thing with us?” Our people love you brother and we are ready for you to lead us to somewhere we can go to and relax in your words while being challenged to the utmost. Will you come up and let your calling be seen by us and others that we will invite along? And even though my body aches and my mind is still numb from the last go around, because I pushed myself so hard, I say, “Of course, what are the dates?’

You see the calling never goes away!!! Remember again, many are called but few are truly chosen to be A BIKER, a true nomadic, ride across America until you die BIKER! Many have faked it, but their facade is soon revealed when it’s time for the rubber to hit the road. But I digress!

Back to the beginning............why was I chosen from all the boys I grew up with, and there was a lot of us? Why didn’t any of them want to travel across America or at least across the state on a motorcycle. I can only recall one childhood friend that loved street bikes other than me. We all had RM 125 dirt bikes, but Turney and me were the only ones that had road bikes, and he too didn’t have that look in his.

Why me Lord? I feel I have let you down, by not 100% doing what I knew I should have, therefore I apologize, however thank you for calling me into this lifestyle, as I would never ever want to be anything other than a BIKER!!! ~ Cochise Chops 40

We were a loose formed group of guys that started a bike club, this one Saturday afternoon we had just returned from a ride to a guys funeral. He had the dreaded C, and fought hard, but lost the battle.

We gathered after the ride at a little run down bar we used as a clubhouse, for drinks and to unwind from the road. The mood wasn’t really upbeat, we all had liked the guy, and we understood the tragedy that Agent Orange had bestowed on so many Viet Vets.

I found a seat at the corner bar end and sat alone, until a wispy blonde I’d been watching came over and sat with me. She had rode in with a guy named Big Henry, who was wanting to be our President, but we hadn’t had a vote yet.

We talked some and we clicked, I bought her another beer, and before long we were pretty cozy. She kissed me and before long we were making out. Big Henry didn’t like that.

He stormed over and yanked her off the barstool and slapped her hard across the mouth. She reeled backwards, a tinge of blood on the corner of her mouth. “ You deserved that and more!” He bellowed.

I was hot. I got up and tossed my glasses on the bar. “ If she deserves more, I’ll take it!” I said. “ You got one free shot, Henry, as long as it’s open hand. After that it’s outside.”

I stuck my hands in my pockets closed my eyes and waited. And waited, seemed like forever but then I heard Henry laugh. He cussed, and then said “ Your alright, Weasel. Your a standup guy, and I like you.!” And that was it. Henry bought a round for the club, and he even apologised to his date. But she didn’t go around with him after that.

But we did, and now she’s been my wife for 35 years.

Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (shortened to Dr. Hook in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including “Sylvia’s Mother”, “The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone’” (both 1972), “Only Sixteen” (1975), “A Little Bit More” (1976), “Sharing the Night Together” (1978), “When You’re in Love with a Beautiful Woman” (1979), “Better Love Next Time” (1979), and “Sexy Eyes” (1980). His songs have been recorded and popularized by a wide range of acts including Johnny Cash, The Irish Rovers, and Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. He was the recipient of two Grammy Awards as well as Golden Globe Award and Academy Award nominations.

”The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone’” is a song written by Shel Silverstein and first recorded by American rock group Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. Produced by Ron Haffkine and released in 1972, it was the band’s third single and peaked at No. 6 on the U.S. pop chart for two weeks on March 17–24, 1973. The song’s success led to the band appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1973, albeit in caricature.

The song satirizes success in the music business; the narrator laments that his band, despite having the superficial attributes of successful rock stars (including drug usage, “teenage groupies, who’ll do anything we say”, and a frenetic guitar solo) has been unable to “get our picture/on the cover of the Rolling Stone”. As the song was riding high on the charts, the magazine finally acquiesced to Dr. Hook’s request — after a fashion: the March 29, 1973, cover of Rolling Stone did indeed feature the band, but in caricature form rather than a photograph (and with only three of the band’s seven members). Also, the group’s name was not used; instead the caption read simply, “What’s-Their-Names Make the Cover.”

BBC Radio refused to play the song, as it contained the name of a commercial publication (Rolling Stone) and could therefore be considered advertising. An urban legend states that the song was rerecorded by the band as “The Cover of the Radio Times”, the weekly television and radio guide published by the BBC; however, this is disputed by Dennis Locorriere, Dr. Hook’s co-lead singer. “Legend has it that we went into a studio and re-recorded the song. What actually happened was that a bunch of BBC disc jockeys went into a studio and shouted ‘RADIO TIMES’ over our original chorus,” Locorriere said. “It’s the same recording that we released but with the addition of their voices layered on top of ours. You can, however, still hear us singing ‘Rolling Stone,’ but way in the background, under their voices.” The new version was rush-released in the UK, but did not find its way onto the charts there. However the band’s UK publicists took advantage of the BBC’s uptight attitude by advertising the single in the UK music press as “the first banned single of 1973”.
