Hello everyone and welcome to the 100th Issue of Cochise CHOPS Magazine. It has been a privilege to be a part of your lives as well as have you be a part of ours for all these years. You have got to watch, through the magazine our daughter Emily, AKA Sugar Baby, grow into a beautiful young lady. You’ve celebrated birthdays and anniversaries with us! You have watched our grandchildren be born (and we have a lot of them), and also been with us as dear friends and family members have passed away. We have prayed with you and you with us, and so many of you truly are family, even some we have never really met. I have always enjoyed walking into a place with my husband and wondering who we will meet that day. Watching him stand a little taller and seeing a smile coming across his face as he sees the people who read CHOPS. As long as he has been doing this magazine, he is still in awe, that any of you would know him, a poor country boy from Kentucky, never dreaming his life would lead him here, with so many loving him, and of course a few who don’t. LOL He doesn’t care so much that you dislike him, he is only amazed that you know him. That you took the time to read his magazine or look at his social media sites, and that what he had to say would even cause a reaction. My husband can write in a way that keeps your attention, that makes you laugh, cry, or that may make you mad, make you think, even pray, and that is what makes him, him. Thank you for your support and encouragement throughout the years. We are looking forward to a hundred more issues full of new friends, new places and making new memories. My dads’ magazine has been a part of our family’s life for about as long as I can remember. This magazine has reached so many people, many of which have watched me grow up. I was 5 when daddy started it and I am now eighteen, and through those years I have met so many really cool people thanks to my dad. I will cherish all of the birthday wishes, words of kindness, and sharing of advice from people who only knew me as Sugar Baby. It has been great to know that there is so much love in my life. Even if I have not been able to feel it all directly or face to face. It is still so very appreciated! I have many great memories from Bike Weeks, Biketoberfests, and just regular meetups with my dad’s buddies. I can remember being little walking to my parents room in the morning during events like those through a sea of people on the floor from the den to the dining room, and eventually everyone eating breakfast together. With us later in the day standing around Bon fires in the backyard with varying ages of people sharing funny, raunchy, sad or meaningful stories by the open flame, many with beers in their palms and smiles on their faces. Or the times my mom and dad throwing me birthday parties and more people their ages showing up rather than mine. But them being there making me laugh harder than ever before, taking the time to talk and play with me. Moments like those bring a smile to my face even to this day. I know there have been times my father has struggled with knowing whether to continue writing this very magazine in your hands or not, but throughout the years I have watched him power through with a passion for writing. Writing about his truths, his family, his life experiences. I can say with full confidence that he is great with words and people , whether when it comes to crowds, one on one or on a page. I am his daughter and so far a complete contrast, but I look up to his confidence, determination, vocabulary, and ability to articulate words of wisdom. Should I put pics of the bikes from Bike Week or the people? I think most would rather see themselves in the magazine, so I have had a few friends to send me some of what they took at the shows of the coolest of people and a couple of nice bikes, mostly older ones and Choppers!! I hope you enjoy! This is my 100th edition of the magazine!!! It took me a while to get here, because I took a couple of years off, but to me this is a great milestone, for a dude who still types with two fingers, and writes like he talks, Southern!!! LOL I remember in November of ‘07, I told a few people that I was going to try and start my own magazine, as I parted ways with the one that I had been helping out. Everyone seemed to think that was cool, but one fellow, whom I can’t even remember his name now, but he said, “What are you going to call it?”, and I said I am not for sure, but I liked CHOPS, and since I have written for several magazines both local and national, I may put my name in there somewhere! He said, “It won’t work, because no one will know what you’re talking about, or it would kind of be vain to use your name”! So I went home and thought about it, and decided, I was going to name it Cochise CHOPS, whether it was self promoting or not, and it worked. By the way, CHOPS doesn’t necessarily mean choppers, but it was meant to be a word that meant I would ‘chop up’ staus quo, political correctness, liberalism and such. I think it worked out just fine!!! HaHaHa!!! Honestly, I am still very humbled by the fact the magazine is still going strong and you are still reading AND looking forward to it monthly. Thank you all so very much!!! We lost 2 more good brothers this last month, Tino from here in town and Big Mike Duncan my best friend from my home town of Henderson, KY. Tino rode with us often and will be greatly missed, especially at the Chopper shows and at the monthly swap meet. Mike, I love you brother. I know I will miss your calls & texts!!!

Well now, I’ve got my own version of that, with CHOPS Magazine. TECH TIP OF THE MONTH By Marcus Of Trailer Trash This is a very important Tech tip concerning most all Harley-Davidsons and other manufactured bikes as well. It could be a matter of life and death as it has happened to a friend of mine a long time ago and he died from a result of it. There is a correct way and a wrong way of installing the rear axle. They should be installed from the right side which is the exhaust side on most Harleys with the nut on the primary side. Sometimes people will take the easier way by installing it from the left side with the lock nut on the exhaust side because the muffler or the exhaust pipe is in the way of putting the axle in from the right. When doing it this way the axle nut could possibly loosen up and back off and the axle could slide out with a result of the axle falling out and dropping the bike to the pavement. As I said earlier this happened to a friend of mine and he died as a result. If you must put it in the wrong way at least use a Cotter key to hold the axle nut from backing off. But really the correct way is to put the axle in from the right with the nut on the left and even then still using a lock tab or Cotter pin. If your axle doesn’t have a hole for a cotter pin it’s not hard to drill a small hole through it near the nut to keep it from backing off.

My New Project, A ‘78 FLH Shovelhead!!!

PLEASE READ!!! Okay, this is what I plan on doing before I kick the bucket. I have always wanted a FLH Shovelhead, as I think ALL FLH’s are the epitime of all Harley Davidsons (16’s on both ends) but I never owned one, or not a true FLH. You see after 1979 they went to the square frames on most dressers. They are FLT’s or FLHT’s, but I wanted one from about 1978 up to 1984. You know, the big battery, the hinged rear fender, the old rounded fiberglass saddle bars, and on and on. Well, I found a buddy who decided to sell me this one, in parts and quiet beaten up, on a payment plan, so I said, “Bring it on over!” She is BEAUTIFUL to me!!! So here is my deal, just like many of you, I have no spare money outside bill money, so I would like to barter for parts and maybe some labor, like sand blasting, a dap of paint, etc., for an ad in my magazine. I know some of you can’t afford to advertise, but have always wanted to, not only for business, BUT because you do love and support me and the magazine, Well, here is your chance!!! I need several parts, so if you have something I need and want to BARTER, please let me know. I will hook you up with a great ad, and you all know I give way more than what someone pays for! Each issue I will do an update, and mention you in the article, which is just another way of advertising. If you don’t have a business, I will mention your name anyway. If my printer would barter, I’d never charge for an ad, as I would barter on all things, which I feel is the correct way of helping each other! It’s a 1978 FLH, so what are you holding? Battery tray & cover? Rear shocks? Headlight nachelle? The left side saddle bag lid? Oil tank? Spoke, not mag wheels? Labor, like replaced bearings & bushings? Paint? Motor parts? This was the best, garage built bike at Warren’s True Grit Bike Show @ The Broken Spoke! I didn’t get the young man’s name, but his work speaks for itself. He even made his own wheels! Chops 44

So the cleanliness of a restaurant is just as important as the food they serve, correct? Well, what about the bathrooms, especially the women’s as they have to sit or try to sit down to relieve themselves. There have been times I have overheard our ladies say, “That place is filthy! Disgusting! I’m not sitting down in there”!!! So Willie has made it his mission to secretly, OK with the owner’s permission, to scope out the restrooms of the places we frequent. So far he has went into 2 of them and videoed their private areas of the establishment. First, was OB’s in Deland, a place we all go to often. I can attest that men’s room is ALWAYS spotless. Clean floors, soap, hot water, paper towels and when I went into the stall, plenty of TP, but what about the ladies’s room? Willie arrived there early one morning and with his super duper phone camera gave us all a look around in OB’s restrooms. The watchers of the live video was impressed, as I was and OB’s got an A+!!! Second up was The Legendary Boot Hill Saloon on Main St. The Boss Man of Tropical Tattoo goes in early (lately he is an early riser, getting out and riding his bikes before the traffic) to the well know establishment, and meets and spends time with the owner, Karin. Willie had been a bartender here 30 years ago, and as he was looking around at the few changes made by Karin, and he noticed the ladies room was totally different, so he asks about it and Ms. Karin, said go take a look at it..................WOW!!! I knew that Al and the help there kept the men’s room nice, always painting, etc. I’ve never been in it, recently, when it was nothing but super clean, BUT the ladies room, oh my, you girls are being pampered!!! Willie took a live video and put it out on Instagram, and the men’s room got an A, with the ladies getting an A++!!! Good job Chops 46
Karin, Kristie and our connoisseur of Bar BQ, Mr. Willie T. Jones for the excellent coverage of the johns!!! ********** As we all know Willie is a connoisseur of Bar BQ, he and I differ somewhat on that, as I am from KY where the most Bar BQed thing there is sheep, which we refer to as mutton, and I LOVE IT, BUT Mr. Jones lives and dies on where the best morsels of mouth watering “Q” there is, preferably, BRISKET!!! So I have been telling him he needs to write up a review of some restaurants in the area each month, with the focus on his speciality, Bar BQ! I’ll start it out for him by mentioning two of his favorite places, one being in the Deland area, on Hwy 17 North, heading towards Deleon Springs, Called “Pit Masters”! This is my friend Billy AKA Panhead Billy. He’s owned this motorcycle since 1983. He’s ridden it over a million miles, all over the United States. He sleeps Under the Stars, beside this motorcycle every night! In the winter he heads South and in the summer he heads North. He’s about as old-school and OG as you can get. Truly one of the last American motorcycling icons. I’ve known him for probably about 19 years now. And every time he sees me he comes up to me and says hello and addresses me by my name. He’s never too busy for conversation. And never boasts on himself. He is definitely one of my heroes. And a person I look up to and respect more than most. Chops 49

In every town that you have ever lived in you usually have a best friend there. Mike was my best friend in Henderson Kentucky. We talked or at least texted each other a couple times a week. I loved going to visit him and Sandy Bowling, my 1st cousin, and bantering back and forth with him (it reminded me of how Sandy’s daddy and I did each other). He would slam me and I’d slam him. Then we would laugh! Big Mike could dish it out and he could also take it. I love you Mike! Tell Jay Dub hey!!!
