MCF Cattlemen’s Classic Golf Tournament

With summer coming to a close, fall events will be beginning soon! Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Annual Missouri’s Cattlemen Foundation Cattlemen’s Golf Tournament will be held Thursday, September 10th, in Fulton at the Tanglewood Golf Tournament. The tournament will be a four-person scramble with a shogun start. Prizes will be awarded to the top teams in both the “Cattlemen” and “Open” classes. Last year we had a fantastic turnout with both golfers and supporters, and look for the same success in 2026. To join in on the fun, look for the registration form in this month’s magazine or visit the MCA website. For more details, see PAGE 77.

Missouri Youth Tour

The Missouri Junior Cattlemen’s Association Youth Tour took students, ages 14–21, across southeast Missouri for a firsthand look at agriculture beyond the cattle industry. Participants visited local cattle producers and agricultural operations while learning about the production of peanuts, cotton and rice and the important role each plays in Missouri agriculture. The tour provided students with the opportunity to ask questions, meet producers and see different aspects of agriculture up close. Be sure to read more about the 2026 MJCA Youth Tour and the experiences shared by participants in the October issue of the Missouri Beef Cattleman.

Missouri State Fair

The Missouri State Fair took place this past month, August 13th-23rd. The Missouri Beef House was once again a busy hub during the Missouri State Fair, serving up Missouri beef and providing opportunities to connect with fairgoers, cattlemen and industry supporters. Along with the daily Beef House activities, MCA hosted Legislative Day, welcoming legislators and guests to the fair for conversations about the cattle industry and the issues impacting Missouri producers. From volunteer workdays and special events to visits from members, industry partners and elected officials, the State Fair was a great opportunity to showcase Missouri beef, build relationships and tell the story of Missouri cattle producers.

Profitability Challenge & FFA Fantasy Feedout

The 2025-2026 Profitability Challenge is wrapping up and we are gearing up for the 2026-2027 competition. The Profitability Challenge will kick off with steers being dropped off at MU South Farm on November 12th, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Steer drop off will be held in conjunction with the MCA Board of Directors meeting on November 12th, 2026. Receiving window for calves will be between Nov 9 and Nov 14. No exceptions. Registration for the 2027 FFA Fantasy Feedout will open on November 1st, 2026. For more details, see PAGE 84.

with Anita Vanderwert A Great State Fair and Continuing to Fight for Missouri Beef As another Missouri State Fair comes to a close, I am reminded that our people, our livestock and our commitment to telling the story of agriculture is what makes Missouri agriculture so special.

The Missouri State Fair is always a highlight of my summer. It was great to see so many Missouri cattlemen and cattlewomen at the fair, exhibiting cattle, visiting with fellow producers and taking the opportunity to educate consumers about our industry. The cattle shows were a highlight, but just as important was the opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication and pride that Missouri beef producers put into their operations every day.

The State Fair also provided an important opportunity to take our message beyond the barns and show rings.

While at the Fair, we were able to visit with our United States Senators, Eric Schmitt and Josh Hawley, along

Those conversations are important. Our senators and congressmen need to hear directly from cattlemen about what is happening on our farms and ranches; from cattle markets and profitability to the challenges of rebuilding the nation’s cow herd, animal health concerns, trade and the policies that affect our ability to remain competitive.

Advocacy doesn’t stop when we leave Jefferson City or Washington, D.C. Some of the most meaningful conversations happen right here at home, when our elected officials could hear directly from the people who raise the cattle. We appreciate our senators our congressmen who are taking the time to listen, and we will continue working with them to make sure the voice of Missouri cattle producers is heard.

The State Fair provides an opportunity to remind people that beef doesn’t just appear on a grocery-store shelf or restaurant menu. It begins with Missouri farm families who care for their cattle, manage their land and work every day to produce a safe, nutritious and highquality product.

While we celebrate a great State Fair, we also have to keep our eyes on the challenges and opportunities ahead.

One of our most important jobs as cattlemen is protecting a strong and fair cattle market.

We are in an important period for the beef industry.

Cattle prices have been strong, and producers deserve

to benefit from the value they are creating. At the same time, we need a market that remains healthy and sustainable for everyone involved, from the cow-calf producer to the feeder, packer, retailer and ultimately the consumer.

Whether it is standing up for producers in Jefferson City and Washington, working on cattle-market issues, supporting youth programs, promoting beef or simply telling our story to a neighbor, every cattleman has a role to play.

The Missouri Cattlemen’s Association will continue to advocate for policies that strengthen transparency and opportunity in the cattle marketplace. We need producers to have the information and tools necessary to make good marketing decisions, and we need a market structure that rewards producers for the quality beef they produce without foreign beef influence.

Keeping the cattle market stable is important not only for today’s producers but also for the future of the Missouri beef industry. Strong cattle prices create opportunities to rebuild cow herds, invest in facilities, improve genetics and bring the next generation back to the farm and ranch. Those investments are essential if we are going to meet the nation’s demand for beef in the years ahead. But a strong market also brings responsibility. We must continue producing the highquality beef that consumers want while protecting our

Change has a funny way of bringing out those knee jerk responses. Change does not come natural to us and I am no different. Changes are all part of life, it is as simple as that. Some changes are voluntary and some come out of nowhere and completely and totally surprise you. But it is how was handle that change will speak volumes of who we are as a person.

Within the agriculture industry, we have seen a LOT of change. From a horse and plow to being in modern times of using virtual fencing within our cattle

CattleWomen President operations. Farmers arn’t always open to change, but they can see the ample benefit, financially esspecially.

Maybe that means a new corral system, virtual fencing, intensive grazing or technology we never imagined having 10 years ago. The easy response is to say, “That’s not how we’ve always done it.” But before we dismiss something simply because it is different, shouldn’t we take the time to understand it? Learn how it works. Ask questions. Decide whether it could make our operation better.

The same can be said for our organization as the Missouri Cattlemen and Cattlewomen. In an organization as large and diverse as ours, we aren’t always going to agree. It is as simple as that. But we are hit in the face with two options. You can dig your heels in, fight tooth and nail or be a leader in the progress of the new world. Ask questions. Lend a hand. Learn how it works. In the end, the choice is yours.

At the end of the day, we need to remember why we are here. We joined MCA and MCW because we believe in Missouri’s cattle industry. We believe in advocating producers, protecting our ability to raise a safe, highquality product and promoting beef. Those goals are bigger than any one person, position or personal agenda. We are a volunteer organization. Our greatest strength has always been our members—the people who are willing to show up, speak up, roll up their sleeves and work together. We may not always agree on how to get there, but we should never lose sight of where we are trying to go.

Progress doesn’t mean forgetting where we came from.

It means taking what we’ve learned and using it to build what comes next.

Speaking of what comes next, the application period is now open for the next Missouri Beef Ambassador! If you are between the ages of 18 and 21, are a self-starter and have a passion for beef promotion and AGvocacy, I encourage you to apply. This is a great opportunity to represent Missouri agriculture, grow your skills and be a voice for our industry.

Now, I will hop off my soap box and move onto something less serious. If you have met me, you know I

am not a huge sports fan. When I do turn on my TV, I am not looking for the latest game. But if it does happen to be on, I might be watching it from behind my eyelids.

But the food that those sporting event gatherings bring?

Now that I can get behind. One of my favorites is nachos (yep, my SoCal roots are showing). They are easy to make, easy to clean up and (most importantly) they’re delicious. This month’s recipe puts beef on top, with beef sausage. If you don’t want to make the sausage, no sweat! Swap it out for taco meat or can go the super easy route, use leftover ground beef or taco meat.

Enjoy!

Mexican-Style Beef Sausage Nachos

What’s a party without nachos? Top crunchy tortilla chips with Mexican-style beef sausage and your other favorites.

Ingredients: 1 recipe Mexican-Style Beef Sausage 1/2 cup salsa 1 can (4 ounces) diced mild green chiles, drained 8 ounces low salt tortilla chips (about 60 chips)

1 cup canned low-sodium black beans, drained, rinsed 1-3/4 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend 2 cups thinly sliced lettuce, such as iceberg or romaine 1 cup diced seeded tomatoes

Garnishes: Sliced avocado, fresh chopped cilantro leaves, sliced ripe olives, sour cream, sliced jalapeño peppers, lime wedges Cooking: Prepare Mexican-Style Beef Sausage. Add salsa and green chiles to sausage mixture; cook 2 to 3 minutes until heated through.

Mexican-Style Beef Sausage: Combine 1 pound Ground Beef (93% or leaner), 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 1-1/2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves, 1-1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika, 1-1/2 teaspoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder in large mixing bowl mixing lightly but thoroughly. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add sausage mixture; cook 8 to 10 minutes, breaking into 1/2-inch crumbles and stirring occasionally.

Cook’s Tip: Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed ground beef. Ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F. Color is not a reliable indicator of ground beef doneness.

Preheat oven broiler on high. Spread chips in single layer on large aluminum foil-lined baking sheet.

Spread sausage mixture evenly over chips. Top with beans; sprinkle with cheese. Broil 5 to 8 minutes or until cheese is melted and begins to brown. Remove from oven. Top with lettuce and tomatoes.

Garnish with avocado, cilantro, olives, sour cream, jalapeños and lime wedges, if desired.

Cook’s Tip: You may substitute pinto beans for black beans.

with Mike Deering Your Funeral The people who show up and tell embarrassing stories you hoped would never be repeated. That song that perfectly sums up your life in just three minutes. The room crowded with everyone wanting to pay their respects, even some you really didn’t like all that much. Have you ever imagined what your funeral might be like?

When thinking about that moment when you ride off into the sunset, you probably imagine yourself being in your 80s or even 90s. Your body worn out. Your skin thick, textured like leather, etched by windburn and sun from decades of working on the farm. You picture yourself peacefully drifting off. You’re ready for the next journey.

What you don’t imagine is dying young. Watching from above as your rambunctious 11 year-old son screams, desperately calling out for his dad. His enthusiasm for life obliterated. Your wife feeling guilty that she is the one still breathing. She feels helpless with nothing but uncertainty ahead. You don’t think about this, but you should.

This was my life in 1993 when my dad drew his last breath under a tractor. A horrible, tragic scene that haunts me to this day. I remember the sound of sparrows, the smell of April rain and the undeniable feeling of emptiness. A vivid memory that won’t leave me alone even with nearly 30 years gone by. Time doesn’t ease your pain. That’s a statement that anyone who has truly felt loss knows is nonsense.

Time does allow you to develop the courage to turn pain into something bigger, something more powerful. You turn pain into passion and hope your story strikes a chord in the life of just one person. That’s why every September as part of National Farm Safety and Health Week, I share my story with farmers and ranchers. You’ve read this column before and you will read it again if you keep me around. I will not stop

Executive Vice President sharing my story. I hope maybe, just maybe, someone cuts this editorial out and hangs it in the barn or on the refrigerator to serve as a sobering reminder that our profession is dangerous.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that farming and ranching ranks among the most likely occupations in which people can be killed. Twenty-four out of every 100,000 in the farming, fishing and forestry occupation category reportedly died of a workplace injury in 2024, the highest rate of any profession. I’m not going to claim that every single death could have been prevented, but I know many could have been. So do you. You know there were times you made decisions to save time or money that weren’t exactly brilliant. You know that you know farming. You’re good at your job. This doesn’t make you invincible. Slow down, evaluate the hazards and avoid shortcuts.

I care about you and I want you to keep farming. I also care about your family. I want no one to feel what I felt, to see what I saw or to hear what I heard over 30 years ago. I don’t want to hear people gossiping about how you died “before your time” and making coffee shop predictions about what will become of your kids.

Do everything you can to make yourself aware of the dangers. I want your funeral to be a day of celebration with embarrassing stories and laughter. Let’s work to prevent your kid from sharing a similar story. Deal?

Observations from the Field with Micah Hans, Region Four Grazing Coordinator Spring Calving or Fall Calving: Let the Grass Help Make the Decision When it comes to calving season, there are about as many opinions as there are cattle operations. Some guys swear by spring calving, while others wouldn’t think about calving any other time than fall. The truth is, both can work. The question is which one fits your operation, your cows, and, maybe most importantly, your forage.

Here in Missouri, we have a pretty good forage-growing environment most years. We have cool-season grasses, tall fescue and the ability to stockpile forage for later use.

That gives us some flexibility when deciding when we want those calves on the ground.

For a lot of Missouri cattlemen, spring calving has always been the standard. Calving in February, March or April lines up pretty well with our spring grass. The cow is coming off winter, calves on the ground and, as the grass starts growing, she has better feed available right when her nutritional needs are going up. That’s a pretty good setup when everything goes right.

The problem is that Missouri weather doesn’t always cooperate. We can have a warm February one year and be buried in snow the next. A cow can calve during a stretch of cold, wet weather and still have several weeks before there is enough grass available to really help her.

Then there is the breeding season. With a spring-calving herd, we’re generally trying to get cows bred during late spring and summer. By July and August, Missouri can be hot and humid, and cattle grazing endophyteinfected fescue can have an even harder time dealing with the heat. You’re asking a cow that is still raising a calf to breed back during some of the toughest weather of the year. Fall calving turns that situation around.

A September or October calving season can put cows on good fall forage when they are nursing a new calf.

Missouri fescue can make some pretty good fall growth, and if we’ve done a good job managing it, stockpiled fescue can carry those cows well into winter. Research from Oklahoma State points out that the best calving season is the one that matches the ranch’s forage resources, and that fall calving can work well when there is enough forage to meet the higher nutritional demands of a lactating cow. But fall calving isn’t a free lunch either.

A fall-calving cow has a calf beside her when winter gets here. That means she’s still producing milk when pasture quality and quantity are going downhill. If you don’t have enough stockpiled grass, you’re going to be feeding hay and possibly supplementing those cows through the winter. That can take some of the advantage out of fall calving pretty quickly. That’s where I think forage needs to be a bigger part of the calving-season discussion.

Instead of asking what month everyone else is calving, I’d start by looking at my own farm. When do I have the most grass? When do I normally run short? How much

fescue can I stockpile? How much hay do I normally have to buy? When do my cows need the most nutrition?

Those questions can tell you a lot.

If you have plenty of high-quality spring grass but struggle to carry enough stockpile into winter, spring calving may make more sense. On the other hand, if you can grow and stockpile a good amount of fescue, fall calving may allow you to put that forage to better use.

The goal isn’t necessarily to eliminate hay feeding altogether. That’s probably not realistic on most Missouri farms. The goal is to use the grass we’ve already grown before we start buying feed. Stockpiled fescue can be a valuable winter feed source, particularly when it is managed properly. Oklahoma State research has shown stockpiled tall fescue can maintain useful protein levels into the winter.

There are other things to consider, too. When you want to sell calves, how much labor you have during calving, what your bull battery looks like and how your cows handle the Missouri weather all matter. But I believe forage should be near the top of the list.

We spend a lot of money putting up hay, buying feed and keeping cows productive. If we can adjust our calving season so that the cow’s highest nutritional demands line up with the forage our farm naturally produces, we’re ahead of the game.

There isn’t a magic calving date that works for every Missouri cattle producer. Spring calving works. Fall calving works. What matters is figuring out which one works best with the grass under your feet.

At the end of the day, I’d rather make my cows fit my forage program than spend all year trying to make my forage program fit my cows.

by Vance Keaton, MCA Treasurer Southwest Missouri Cattle and Weather Update Hello from southwest Missouri... and I mean southwest Missouri. My family ranches in McDonald County, the county that borders both Arkansas and Oklahoma.

My wife and I have raised three kids alongside our operation. Where together we run an Angus, Simmental and crossbred cow/calf herd along with a heifer replacement program.

If you’re running cattle in southwest Missouri right now, you’re probably seeing a market that still feels strong, but isn’t quite as steady as it was earlier in the summer. Feeder cattle demand remains at a steady level, especially for calves that are weaned, vaccinated, in good condition and offered in uniform groups. Buyers are now being more selective - calves that are lighter, unweaned, carrying extra hair or missing a clear health program are more likely to be discounted. For those planning a late-summer or early-fall sale, the message is simple: the market is still rewarding good management.

Tight cattle supplies across Missouri continue to support prices, but the market is moving around week to week.

Some early-August reports showed feeder cattle trading somewhat higher, helped by cooler weather and better buyer interest. More recent southwest Missouri reports have been mixed - some feeders steady to lower amid our current hot/dry spell, while certain weight classes still found solid demand. Local quality, flesh condition, health records and sale-barn volume can make a real difference in what calves bring on sale day.

Replacement and breeding heifers are another part of the market our family watches closely. Good females are still drawing attention as producers work to rebuild or improve their cow herds. The top end favors heifers with sound structure, good disposition, proven health work and clear breeding information. We market bred heifers with known calving windows and calving-ease bull exposure, backed by solid pregnancy checks. Programs, like Missouri’s Show-Me-Select sales, show buyers are willing to pay for females that offer lower risk and longterm herd value. Still, replacement decisions have to fit the grass and feed situation at home - a fancy bred

heifer is only a good buy if you can carry her through calving and rebreeding without shorting the rest of the herd.

Weather has had a direct impact on our cattle movement and decisions this year. When temperatures push past 100 degrees, we hold cattle back rather than haul and stress them. Rainfall has been spotty, some pastures have caught rain and are regrowing, while others remain short, brown and stressed. These local differences affect pasture growth, pond levels, hay needs and how long cattle can comfortably stay on grass, so we ride pastures and check water rather than rely on internet averages.

Hay supplies in our area look better than in past years.

Early spring rains supported good production for those who cut in a timely window and harvest has caught up after earlier delays. That’s good news! But hay shouldn’t be an afterthought. If pastures tighten in August or September, hay use could pick up quickly. More rain would give producers breathing room; heat reduces performance, increases water demand and makes handling cattle more stressful. Shade, clean water, fly control and low-stress handling need to stay near the top of the list, especially for calves being preconditioned or backgrounded.

Producers who can show value should be in the best position going forward. Weaned, vaccinated, bunk-broke calves in even groups are still the kind buyer’s chase.

Lighter or higher-risk calves can still bring good money compared with long-term averages, but that discount can widen fast if heat returns or buyers get more cautious. Now is also a good time to review cull cow plans, pregnancy-check schedules, mineral programs and fall forage needs before the season gets away from us.

Bottom line: the Southwest Missouri cattle outlook is still strong, but it pays to stay flexible. Prices are currently supported by tight supply and solid demand, but the market isn’t moving in a straight line.

BEEF CHECKOFF NEWS Internship Reflection: Lanie Milliken Growing up on a commercial Angus operation, I have always understood that the beef represents much more than the end product. It represents early mornings, long days, dedication, and a commitment to caring for animals and the land. I have grown up watching my family and other producers invest their time, resources and passion into raising cattle, while also carrying the responsibility of providing safe and nutritious food for others. Because of that, I have always recognized the importance of telling agriculture’s story. My summer with the Missouri Beef Industry Council (MBIC) provided me with a deeper appreciation for the work that takes place beyond the farm gate to strengthen the connection between producers and consumers.

When I began my internship with MIBC, I already had a solid foundation in agriculture and a deep passion for the beef industry. I understood the importance of advocating producers, but I wanted to gain a greater understanding of how the Beef Checkoff strategically communicates the value of beef to audiences who may not have a direct connection to the ag industry.

Throughout my internship, I learned effective communication extends far beyond simply sharing information. It is about fostering understanding, cultivating relationships, and establishing trust with your targeted audience.

One of the most valuable aspects of this experience has been witnessing the diverse ways the Beef Checkoff supports the industry. Before this internship, I understood the importance of promoting beef, but I did not fully grasp the amount of planning, collaboration, and strategy involved in each initiative. From consumer education to promotional resources and industry outreach, every project serves an impactful purpose. The work is designed to address questions, provide credible information, and help consumers better understand the dedication and responsibility behind every beef product they purchase.

During my time with MBIC, I had the opportunity to contribute to projects that allowed me to combine my agricultural background with my passion for communication. I developed resources that helped share information about beefs’ nutritional value, assisted with educational materials, and contributed to efforts focused on engaging both consumer and producer audiences.

Each assignment challenged me to consider how the industry is represented and how we can communicate our message in a way that is accurate, relatable, and impactful.

One of the greatest lessons I gained throughout this internship is the importance of understanding your audience. A producer may understand the daily decisions, challenges and commitments involved in raising cattle, while a consumer may have questions about animal care, nutrition, or where their food originates. Effective communication requires recognizing these differences and discovering meaningful ways to connect. The goal is not simply to promote beef, but to highlight the people, values and dedication that make the industry what it is.

This experience also reinforced the importance of agricultural communicators who understand both sides of the conversation. Coming from a cattle background, I have witnessed firsthand the pride producers have in their operations and the care they provide for their animals. This internship allowed me to see the importance of sharing that perspective with individuals outside of agriculture. Producers have powerful stories to tell, and organizations like MBIC provide the platform and resources necessary to share those messages.

One of the most rewarding parts of this internship was seeing the dedication behind the scenes. Many consumers only see the final message, advertisement or educational resource, but there is a significant amount of research, collaboration and creativity that goes into making each piece effective. Every decision is made with the goal of representing producers accurately while providing consumers with reliable information. Seeing this process firsthand strengthened my appreciation for the role communication plays in the success and sustainability of the beef industry.

The MBIC staff played an essential role in making this internship such a meaningful experience. Their commitment to the beef industry is evident through the work they accomplish every day. They are dedicated to supporting producers while also helping consumers feel informed and confident about beef. Being surrounded by individuals who are passionate about agriculture and communication encouraged me to continue developing

professionally and reminded me of the significance of teamwork within the industry.

Another important takeaway from this summer is the role of advocacy. Advocacy is not always about having the loudest voice; it is about delivering the right message with purpose and authenticity. It requires listening, learning, and creating opportunities for meaningful conversations. In a time when discussions surrounding food production can often become complex, the need for accurate, science-based information and trusted voices are more important than ever.

As I continue pursuing a career in agricultural communications, this internship has helped shape my understanding of the role I hope to have within the industry. My desire is to be someone who helps bridge the gap between producers and consumers by sharing agriculture’s story with honesty, accuracy, and authenticity. The future of agriculture depends on individuals who are willing to communicate effectively, educate others, and advocate for the people who make the industry possible.

My summer with the Missouri Beef Industry Council has been an experience I will carry with me throughout my career. I leave with expanded knowledge, meaningful relationships, and a greater appreciation for the work that goes into promoting beef and supporting producers. This internship reminded me that every producer has a story worth sharing, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help tell it.

Franklin County Cattlemen Fair time is upon us and Franklin County just completed their big five day fair. The Washington town and country fair’s theme was rooted in tradition. This holds true for the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association as this year marked the 35th year of crowning a beef queen for the fair. The honors went to Miss Ann Dinger of Villa Ridge, Missouri. Ann is the 17 year-old daughter of Brian and Ann Dinger. She is very active in 4-H and the Washington FFA chapter. She has been showing a market steer the past several years. She is actively involved in her family farm and hopes to one day have a farm to plate operation.

The cattlemen’s association has been very busy this spring with a cookout first Friday of May, promoting beef month with cooking ribeye steak sandwiches to help support the Franklin County Extension Foundation.

The local 4-H club served ribeye’s the next day also and had a huge sales.

Our cattlemen were busy at the five day fair grilling just under 5,000 steaks and over 550 lbs of brisket sandwiches. The cattlemen’s had a table supporting MBIC and handing out brochures and recipe cards.

Bates County Cattlemen The Bates County Cattlemen have been very busy these last couple of months. We had a visit from Kyle Viers, Region 1 MCA Regional Grazing Coordinator. He offered his assistance to anyone who may have questions or concerns.

The Cattlemen partnered with Hertzog Meat Company to feature premium Angus steaks, aged 44 days through wet and dry methods, for their steak fry during the Bates County Fair. While the meat was going through the aging process, some of the Cattlemen (and Cattlewomen) toured Hertzog’s new facility in Butler, MO. July brought us the Bates County Fair, where we participated in the Bash. We offered burgers, smoked meat, and ribeye steak sandwiches. It was a fun and successful event. On Thursday, the Cattlemen held their

Newton and McDonald County Cattlemen The Newton and McDonald County Cattlemen’s Association has had a busy summer this year. We started out the summer by attending both of our local fairs and handing out watermelon at their premium sales. Newton County Fair on July 11th and McDonald County Fair on July 18th.

On August 6th the cook team of Randy Drake, Jenny Drake, Ronnie Rogers, Brian Hall and James Gibson along with other members grilled burgers for the Pasture Renovation Workshop at the Pineville Community Center. The workshop was put on by the MU Extension office and had 88 people in attendance from Newton, McDonald and Barry Counties.

We are rounding out our summer by distributing the proceeds from our Gun Raffle to five schools to use in the Backpack, Snack Pack program for kids. We generated funds of $5,000. With the raffle and that is being distributed based on need to area schools. The first distribution was to McDonald County Schools on August 13th in the amount of $1,654.77. We will be distributing funds to Neosho Schools on August 17th, $1,424.95. Seneca Schools on August 18, $689.49.

Polk County Cattlemen Summer has been a busy and rewarding season for the Polk County Cattlemen’s Association as we continue supporting local youth, promoting the beef industry and serving our community.

At our June 11th meeting, we were honored to present scholarships to this year’s scholarship recipients.

Supporting the next generation is one of the most important investments we can make and we are proud to recognize these outstanding students as they pursue their educational goals. The future of agriculture depends on young leaders like them, and we wish each recipient continued success The Fourth of July provided another opportunity for our association to connect with the community.

Members staffed a booth at Southwest Baptist University’s Celebration of Freedom, where we served steak sandwiches and all-beef hot dogs to attendees enjoying the festivities. The event was well attended, and we appreciated the opportunity to promote beef while participating in one of our area’s premier Independence Day celebrations.

During our July 9th meeting, members welcomed Wesley Tucker, who presented information on

Alternative Heifer Retention Strategies. His discussion provided valuable insights for producers as they evaluate herd management decisions in today’s ever-changing cattle market. We appreciate Wesley sharing his expertise and contributing to the educational mission of our association.

Looking ahead, Polk County Cattlemen have several opportunities to serve and promote the beef industry.

On August 22nd, members will volunteer at the Missouri State Fair Beef House in Sedalia, MO, helping showcase high-quality beef products to fairgoers from across the state. Then, on September 12th, our cookers will be back in action at Country Days in Bolivar, serving our popular steak sandwiches and all-beef hot dogs to attendees.

For many cattle producers, a single decision this fall could shape the future of their operation: whether to sell valuable heifers for immediate income or retain them to help rebuild the herd.

“The opportunity to expand is real, but so is the risk,” he said. “With cattle prices where they are today, mistakes in replacement heifer selection can be extremely costly. Producers need a system for making those decisions intentionally rather than relying on tradition or intuition.”

The U.S. beef cow herd is at its lowest level in nearly 75 years, and cattle prices at record highs. The opportunity to expand has never been greater, but neither has the financial risk of getting it wrong, said Eric Bailey, University of Missouri Extension state beef nutrition specialist.

To help producers make informed decisions, MU Extension will host Retain With Intention: Building a Better Missouri Cow Herd Sept. 2nd-3rd at the MU Southwest Research, Extension and Education Center near Mount Vernon, MO.

High Nitrogen Prices Force A Closer Look At The Numbers State Forage Specialist Advises On Fall Fertility Decisions For Stockpiled Tall Fescue Source: MU Extension News COLUMBIA, Mo. – Stockpiled tall fescue remains one of Missouri’s strongest competitive advantages in the beef industry. This low-cost fall and winter feed allows producers in Missouri to extend grazing deeper into the winter than producers in most other cattle states.

Maximizing that advantage starts with smart fertility decisions in August, says Carson Roberts, University of Missouri Extension state forage specialist.

Applying nitrogen in mid-to-late August has traditionally been a reliable way to boost stockpile yield. But nitrogen prices have risen more than 40% in the past six months because of supply disruptions tied to the Iranian conflict.

That increase has many producers asking if fall nitrogen still makes economic sense, Roberts says.

MU Extension research over the past three years shows that a 60-pound-per-acre fall nitrogen application has increased tall fescue yield by an average of about 35%, Roberts says. Response varies widely with rainfall: Drought years often produce only 8 pounds of additional forage per pound of nitrogen applied, while in years with favorable moisture, the increase can reach 20-25 pounds of forage per pound of nitrogen.

To decide whether fall nitrogen is a better buy than purchasing hay, Roberts recommends this quick formula: 1. Divide 2,000 by your expected pounds of forage produced per pound of nitrogen.

2. Multiply that result by the current cost of nitrogen per pound.

3. Compare that number to the delivered price of average-quality fescue hay.

For example, assuming 8 pounds of forage per pound N, and N at $0.80 per pound: (2,000 ÷ 8) × $0.80 = $200 per ton of forage. At 20 pounds of forage per pound N: (2,000 ÷ 20) × $0.80 = $80 per ton of forage.

If the calculated fertilizer cost per ton is higher than local hay prices (currently near $85 per ton for average fescue hay in many markets), purchasing hay is the lower-cost option, he says.

Buying and feeding hay on pasture also affects fertility, says Roberts. A typical ton of fescue hay contains about 32 pounds of nitrogen, 12 pounds of phosphorus and 18 pounds of potassium, plus valuable micronutrients.

When hay is fed strategically across pastures, much of that fertility returns to the soil and can reduce the need for commercial fertilizer over time.

The key to capturing the fertility benefit of hay without damaging stands is proper feeding management.

“Pugging and mud problems usually develop when cattle repeatedly congregate in the same location,” Roberts says. “Whether unrolling hay or bale grazing, move the feeding site with each new bale.” Limit total hay fed to no more than about two tons per acre in any one area to avoid excessive nutrient concentration and soil compaction.

Even when relying primarily on purchased hay for fertility, soil testing remains essential. Nutrients added by hay become available to plants only when soil pH is near neutral and the overall nutrient balance is correct.

A soil test every three years allows producers to monitor progress and make targeted adjustments rather than guessing.

Roberts’ bottom line for 2026: Evaluate your specific situation using the calculation above. Timely application—ideally by late August—and careful hay-feeding management will determine how much advantage Missouri producers capture from stockpiled fescue this winter.

Delegates Elected by Peers to 143rd Convention of Delegates Delegates will meet to conduct annual business on Nov. 16, as part of the 2026 Angus Convention.

Source: American Angus Association Delegates and alternates have been elected to the 143rd American Angus Association® Convention of Delegates, to be held Monday, November 16, in Louisville, Kentucky, as part of the 2026 Angus Convention. Angus breeders were elected by fellow members in their state or district to serve as voting representatives at the annual meeting. Representing the United States and Canada, the delegates will participate in the annual business meeting which includes the election of officers and five directors to the American Angus Association® Board of Directors.

Delegate candidates were nominated this spring through a process outlined in the Breeder’s Reference Guide.

To be eligible to vote, nominate or be nominated this year, members needed to be active life or regular members and have met the requirements to be an Eligible Voting Member by April 17, 2026. During the nomination period, nominations can be made by any Eligible Voting Member whose farm or ranch is located in the same herd state as the nominee. Following the close of nominations, ballots are prepared and sent to Eligible Voting Members in each voting district (state or Canada). This year’s voting period was July 17 – August 18.

Paper ballots mailed to the office and received by Aug. 18, were counted on August 19, 2026, by Association staff using a multi-step process which includes several checks and balances to ensure the process followed the guidelines set out in the Breeder’s Reference Guide.

Election observers and Association members Lori Fink of Kansas and Jake Tiedeman of Nebraska oversaw the process.

Online ballots were tabulated by the online voting platform, YesElections. Mailed-in and online votes were then totaled together, and the results were audited to ensure accuracy of the count and the eligibility of any delegates who were elected through the write-in process.

As a part of the process: • 2,225 ballots were received.

• 2,169 ballots were eligible to be counted.

• 1,178 ballots were electronically submitted, 54.3% of total eligible ballots.

• 301 delegates and 247 alternates were elected from 44 states, Canada and Washington D.C. A complete list of Delegates and Alternates to the 143rd Convention of Delegates is listed online at Angus.org.

This year’s Convention of Delegates and Angus Convention will be held in conjunction with Angus events at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). Capitol Update with Nancy Giddens & Shannon Cooper Attention Now Shifts to November The dust has settled on Missouri’s 2026 primary election, and while the campaign signs will soon disappear, the work of governing is only beginning. From the perspective of those of us who spend our days advocating for Missouri agriculture, election night is never the finish line. It’s the beginning of building relationships with the lawmakers who will make decisions affecting cattle producers, rural communities and family farms over the next several years.

This year’s primary featured spirited contests across the state, particularly in Republican legislative districts where ideological differences often mattered more than party affiliation. Seventeen of Missouri’s 34 Senate seats and all 163 House seats were on the ballot, producing a mix of expected victories and a handful of surprises.

The only statewide office on the ballot was the State Auditor.

Republican Scott Fitzpatrick secured his party’s nomination and will face Democrat Quentin Wilson in the November general election.

Several congressional races also drew significant attention.

Wesley Bell claimed the Democratic nomination in the 1st Congressional District, while Rick Brattin emerged victorious in the Republican primary for the 5th District and Chris Stigall won the Republican nomination in the 6th District.

The most closely watched legislative races largely centered on the Missouri Senate. Incumbents generally held their ground, with one notable exception. Senator Curtis Trent of Springfield was defeated by Lori Rook in one of the night’s most closely watched Republican primaries, underscoring the ongoing shift within portions of the party. Other contested Senate races produced victories for candidates including MCA’s own Mike Deering, Bill Hardwick, Jake Vogel, Jon Patterson, Greg Sharpe, Sam Alexander, Jill Carter and Mike Jones, while Democratic nominees Gina Mitten and Raychel Proudie advanced to the general election.

Looking ahead to November, most legislative districts remain favorable to the party that currently holds them because of Missouri’s district maps. However, Senate Districts 8 and 30

Nancy Giddens & Shannon Cooper are expected to attract considerable attention, with competitive general election matchups that could influence leadership and legislative priorities.

The Missouri House also will look considerably different when lawmakers return to Jefferson City in January. Three incumbents were defeated in their primaries, and when those races are combined with term limits, retirements and open seats, nearly one-third of the House will consist of newly elected members.

That level of turnover creates both opportunity and responsibility.

For agricultural organizations, it means introducing new legislators to the issues that matter most to cattle producers – from property rights and animal health to transportation, taxation and regulatory policy. Building those relationships early is essential because many of tomorrow’s legislative leaders will be sworn in for the first time this winter.

Voters also weighed in on four constitutional amendments. Amendments 1 and 2 passed comfortably, continuing funding for state parks, soil and water conservation while requiring all county tax assessors to be elected.

Amendments 4 and 5 were decisively rejected, with voters turning away proposals to change Missouri’s constitutional amendment process and eliminate the state’s income tax.

Attention now shifts to the November 3rd general election, but preparations for the 2027 legislative session are already underway.

Bill pre-filing begins December 1, and the General Assembly gavels in on January 6th. The conversations we begin today with newly nominated candidates will shape the policy debates of tomorrow.

For those of us representing Missouri’s cattle industry, the mission remains unchanged regardless of election results. We will continue working with legislators on both sides of the aisle to ensure the voice of Missouri cattle producers is heard as the next General Assembly begins its work. Elections may determine who occupies the seats in the Capitol, but effective advocacy is what helps ensure rural Missouri has a seat at the table.
