Missouri Cattlemen’s Youth Expo

It is almost time for the “can’t miss” weekend of the summer. The weekend will include both the 42nd Annual MCA All-Breeds Junior Show and the 3rd Annual MJCA Replacement Heifer Show & Sale. The expo will feature long-held traditions such as the MJCA Photo Contest, MJCA board interviews and elections, and the MJCA annual meeting while also bringing in new opportunities for junior members like a cornhole tournament on Friday. 22nd Annual Cattlemen’s Steak Fry

The Cattlemen’s Steak Fry will be held on Saturday, June 14th at the Missouri State Fair Agricultural Building.

Join us for a great steak dinner, raffles, live and silent auctions, and great conversation. You’ll find the details in this month’s magazine and on our website. This event is open to the public and we welcome anyone who wish to celebrate Missouri’s beef industry. Funds raised will benefit the MCA Political Action Committee to help elect leaders who understand and value agriculture to guide our state’s policy, now and in the future. For more information and registration instructions, see PAGE 27-28.

2025 Top Hand Awards

The 2024 Top Hand awards have been announced. Five levels of awards will be offered to members that have recruited 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 new members to the association. Each of these levels is accompanied by a certificate that is good towards items in the MCA General Store, 2026 Missouri Cattle Industry Convention & Trade Show registration, or toward the purchase of steak fry silent/live auction items, and/or convention silent/live auction items. Show-Me-Select Heifer Replacement Program

We are partnering with Show-Me-Select again this year for an exclusive new member promotion drawing. All new Missouri Cattlemen’s Association members will be entered into a drawing for a $2,000 credit to a ShowMe-Select Replacement Heifer sale. To be considered a new member, you must not have been an MCA member within the last 12 months. Credit must be redeemed in the same calendar year at any of the spring or fall sales.

Cartridges for Cash

MAY 2025

We are excited to be working with Merck Animal Health on the Cartridges for Cash program to raise funds for our association’s junior programs. We want to challenge our affiliates to a competition. The group that collects and turns in the most cartridges will win a $1,000 scholarship to award to a junior member of their choice. Each county should collect the Ralgro wheel and Revalor cartridges used by their members and bring them to either one of the Board of Director’s meeting held each quarter or to the annual convention in January. We will keep a tally of the cartridges collected from each county throughout the year and the winner will be announced at the Missouri Cattle Industry Convention & Trade Show after all cartridges are counted.

Perspective with Jeff Reed

VOLUNTARY Floods, tornadoes and more tornadoes. We have all be reeling from the widespread damage across the state.

Lives were lost and the damage toll continues to rise.

We have seen our rural communities rally together and help their neighbors, which is the way we should be. It is comforting that amidst all of this, we have a Governor who, before speaking to a large audience at the Missouri State Fair Foundation hall of fame inductee dinner, compares his pasture flood pictures with my own flood pictures. Our conversation regarded the management of the water and the U.S Army Corps of Engineers which is a recurring issue; however, with each concern I brought up, he was not only in tune with but already had a solution laid out. With Governor Kehoe at the helm, we are in great hands to deal with such natural disasters.

Another statewide official is reaching out to producers to educate them on opportunities for their children.

Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek is encouraging producers to enroll their children in a 529 plan. The plan is an educational savings plan which is MO state tax deductible and a great program to assist the future generation. This is something he is passionate about, and you will be seeing more from him in the magazine and other avenues to recruit for this. You can learn more about this program at www.missourimost.org

MCA President The Capitol is never a dull place! We have had some successes. We have been targeted as “Corporate Cattlemen,” and we have had more successes. I will never understand when individuals call for more governmental interferences in the cattle industry.

Asking the government to tell producers how their meat may be labeled is just preposterous. This is the same government who mandates human vaccinations, creates constant bureaucratic overreach, and quite simply will take a seemingly good, intended agenda item and turn it around to attack individual producers. The overarching theme of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association when it comes to policy is VOLUNTARY. Let each individual producer decide how, when and where they market their cattle. Leave the mandates to the overreaching bureaucrats. It is my intent to send bureaucrats this message; “No. The cattle market is the last free trade protein and is not for sale and not for taking.”

As far as good stories go, we recently hired a high school student to help on weekends, over summer, etc. I am always reluctant with new employees and try them out before hiring them full-time. When it came time to introduce himself, the young gentleman said, “Hello, I am Honeybun.” How can we go wrong with a 16-yearold who refers to himself as honeybun? You’re hired!

There will undoubtedly be more stories to come out of this new hire.

with Jennifer Poor Our Future Why do we do what we do? It’s definitely not for all the fame and fortune, that’s for sure! This month, I had a very hard time trying to figure out what to write about for this article. I was at my day job thinking about the topic for this article, drawing a blank, and getting frustrated. But then a student who happens to be a Missouri Junior Cattlemen’s Association member, came into my office and told me he really liked March’s article (he had not received April’s magazine yet). That is when it hit me. It’s kids like him that make me want to help keep this industry going strong. Let me give you a little back story on this student. He is an officer in the Willow Springs High School FFA and competes in multiple FFA contests. He helps out at the local food pantry and is an

CattleWomen President all around great person. There is one thing though, this kid doesn’t own any cattle. However, in August 2024, he got the opportunity to go on the MJCA Youth Industry Tour which got him a membership to MJCA which inturn got him a subscription to this magazine. Here is proof that he actually reads the magazine and gleans information from it.

There are days that I feel like what we do for the beef industry is a lost cause. Society today is so far removed from the farm that they have no clue about our industry, yet they want to regulate it. In order to educate our future leaders and advocates, we need to bring them to the farm during calving season or when we work cattle, invite them to join us at Cowboys at the Capitol, sponsor their tuition fees to Missouri Cattlemen’s Leadership College or the youth industry tour. We need to show the younger generation our why. May is a time when FFA chapters are having their annual banquets. I challenge you to reach out to your local chapter advisors and ask them when their banquet is. If it’s this month, go to the banquet. You can show up to see the kids or you can show up and volunteer to help out with the banquet. As cattlemen and women, we need to step out and show these kids that they are part of our future and that we want to help educate them. If you are not part of your local FFA Alumni group, then join it! If your local FFA doesn’t have an Alumni group, then start one. Most FFA advisors will welcome an alumni group with open arms.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Youth Expo on June 12th-15th. Go out and show them your support!

Cali-Avocado Steak Salad

A simple salad with a lot of flavor. Top Sirloin Steak, orange, avocado and naan bread make this salad a tasty option for lunch or dinner in 30 minutes.

Ingredients: 1 boneless beef top sirloin steak, cut 1 inch (about 1/2 pound) 6 teaspoons olive oil, divided 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 3/4 teaspoon pepper, divided

1 large navel orange 1 large Fresh California Avocado 2 loaves naan bread, (about 3 ounce each) 4 cups mixed salad greens

Cooking: Rub both sides of beef steak with 1 teaspoon olive oil; sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper.

Cut bottom and top off orange. Remove remaining skin from orange; cut into segments; reserve. Cut avocado in half; remove pit, but do not peel. Squeeze juice from two cut ends of orange over cut sides of avocado, then brush with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Sprinkle with remaining salt.

Brush both sides of naan bread with 2 teaspoons olive oil.

Place steak on grill over medium, ash-covered coals. Grill, covered, 11 to 15 minutes (over medium heat on preheated gas grill, covered, 13 to 16 minutes) for medium rare (145°F) to medium (160°F) doneness, turning occasionally. During last 2 to 3 minutes of grilling, place avocado, cut side down, and naan bread on grill; turn bread once.

Meanwhile, toss salad greens with remaining olive oil and pepper. Add orange segments to salad.

Remove skin from grilled avocado. Cut avocado into slices; add to salad and toss gently. Carve steak into thin slices; place on top of salad. Cut naan into wedges; arrange around salad.

Near the end of March, after my April article had already gone to print, I received a phone call from a gentleman requesting that I pick diabetic friendly recipes for my articles. Sir, I want you to know that I heard you. Thankfully, beef is a protein source and has zero carbohydrates or sugar. The stuff we add to it is a whole different story. My favorite way to have beef is a one inch thick steak that has been grilled to medium rare on a charcoal grill courtesy of my awesome husband. Usually I season our steaks with salt and pepper. If we’re honest, a good steak doesn’t need a ton of seasoning. For sides we have raw veggies, grilled corn on the cob yes, I know (corn is high in carbs), or fried okra. . Here’s the thing with our fried okra, I don’t bread it. I season it with garlic salt and pepper and fry it in my cast iron skillet with whipped beef tallow. Sometimes simple is best.

This month’s recipe pick is another one of my favorite ways to eat beef in a steak salad. If you are watching your sugars/carbs, don’t eat the naan bread. If you have had a high sugar day or your diabetes is acting up, you can easily leave out the orange segments and orange juice sprinkle and replace with a little bit of balsamic vinegar. Enjoy!

One last thing, mark your calendars for the 22nd Annual PAC Steak Fry on Saturday, June 14th. This is a great way to support our association on the political side of things. Also you get a great steak that night.

Pasture to Plate Workshop Missouri CattleWomen and Missouri Beef Industry Council teamed up for a Pasture to Plate workshop on Saturday, March 22, at 3 Cedars Event Center in Nevada, Missouri.

The day started with a recipe demonstration of Beef Breakfast Sausage, followed with Gobbler’s Roost Restaurant serving the Beef Breakfast Sausage and Goat Cheese Bake as the breakfast entrée. Attendees received recipe cards for all demonstrations and entrees served.

Allie Montz of FCS Financial wrapped up the morning session with information on the Livestock Risk Program, offering price insurance for producers.

The lunch entrée was a Beef Steak Salad with Dried Cherries. Kathy Abele’s plate presentations were outstanding and everyone enjoyed their meals.

Allison Crick and Erica Graessle of Missouri Beef Council were presenters for the first session and discussed Beef Checkoff funded projects and an overview of the Beef Quality Assurance program.

A Direct Marketing producer panel featured Jennifer Poor, Janet Crow, Mandy Weigand and Kathy Abele.

Each spoke on their marketing system, how they had adapted and changed to best meet the customer needs and make it work for them.

Monarch Drone was the second presentation of the day and Janet Crow, assisted by Eliza Crow, discussed opportunities for pasture management, as well as cattle observation using various drones best suited for each need. Mapping and locating using heat sensors were shown.

Matthew Jenkins, MCA Regional Grazing Coordinator, led a discussion of pasture care and management, sharing ideas for individualized plans to best fit each operation.

A cooking demonstration featuring Santa Fe Beef and Corn Chili served with tortilla chips, provided appetizers for attendees. Marsha Corbin invited everyone to join in at the Missouri State Fair Beef Showcase to help with similar beef cooking demos for fairgoers.

Keynote speaker for the day was Brandi Buzzard Frobose of Greeley, Kansas. An ag advocate, who is a working rancher from southeastern Kansas that maintains an active social media presence while carrying on the day to day business of a ranch mom. She shared how she became more active in representing agriculture and shared thoughts on the opportunities each attendee has to connect with media and consumers.

The day wrapped up with door prizes provided by Kitchen Essentials and 54 Feed & Seed of Nevada, Purina Feed by Kalyn Cushard and FCS Financial.

Missouri Beef Industry Council Director Election Legal Notice Notice is hereby given that the Director of Agriculture will be conducting an election to fill three positions on the Missouri Beef Industry Council Board of Directors. One regional council member is to be elected in each of Regions 1, 4 and At Large. Terms of office are three years.

Any cattle producer within the specified regions of the State of Missouri who is producing cattle for market and the legal owner of one or more head of cattle becomes eligible to vote in the election by registering at his/her respective Farm Service Agency, or electronically at http://mda.mo.gov/councils/ prior to July 21, 2025. Cattle producers who have voted in any of the previous three elections are not required to register unless their address has changed.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture will mail ballots to registered producers on August 12, 2025. Ballots must be postmarked no later than August 31, 2025 to be valid.

Any qualified producer may be nominated and have his/her name placed on the ballot provided the independent nomination is accompanied by petition of not fewer than 100 producers in the nominee’s region and written permission of the candidate. Producers signing said petition must meet the qualifications of a producer. Petitions must be delivered to the Director of Agriculture on or before July 21, 2025. Petition forms are available from the Missouri Department of Agriculture by calling 573-751-5611.

with Mike Deering Squeaky Wheel Nearly 13 years ago (seems like last year), I moved from the Washington, D.C., area back to Missouri to serve the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association. Within my first month of employment, I met with other commodity leaders and kept hearing about the need to build a new meat science facility at the University of Missouri to adequately train students interested in meat processing. I chuckled because I was shocked that we were still using a facility that was antiquated when I was a student at the University from 2002-2004. The current structure was built in 1952.

While Dr. Bryon Wiegand, Rick Disselhorst and many others didn’t let an outdated facility stop them from providing the best training possible, the facility was in no way, shape or form comparable to modern meat processing facilities in the “real world.” Bluntly put, it was embarrassing. We can do better. We went to work because as they say, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.”

Time after time, we would come close to securing resources and then end up with an empty bag. I was clueless it would take 12 years of collaboration, passion and grit to eventually find the grease.

In my opinion, stars started to align about six years ago with the development of the Food and Beverage Taskforce. This initiative was later led by then Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe, alongside Missouri Department of Agriculture Director Chris Chinn, and included commodity leaders, producers, academics from multiple Missouri institutions and policymakers. The taskforce was charged with exploring ways to add value to Missouri grown products. Agriculture was already generating $88 billion annually, but the potential was much larger. The University of Missouri commissioned an independent research study that concluded Missouri agriculture is leaving well over $20 billion on the table and sending that value to other states.

Executive Vice President More momentum occurred when I received a phone call that Missouri was on the American Foods Group shortlist as a potential site for a new largescale processing plant. Our collective efforts were now in overdrive and Governor Mike Parson was absolutely committed to sealing the deal. Missouri agriculture truly came together to make it happen and we did. We now had a new talking point. We have a major packing plant coming to our state and we must construct a stateof-the-art facility to train the next generation of meat processors. Senator Lincoln Hough and his team agreed and made sure the state’s budget included resources to make this happen. The pieces of the puzzle were finally coming together.

A lot of people had a hand in making this happen. I intentionally left out the vast majority of names in fear of missing someone. I could literally fill this column with names of people committed to making the Michael L. Parson Meat Science Education and Training Laboratory a reality. The groundbreaking on Friday, April 18, was truly overwhelming considering the 12 years I served alongside many others as the squeaky wheel who refused to let this go. I am proud of our association for never giving up on this effort. We kept after it and here we are with a major success story that will return dividends to our industry.

Hello, I’m Dale Buhman, newly elected Region 4 Vice President of the Missouri Cattleman’s Association from the small town of Clarksdale in Northwest Missouri.

My wife and I have a cow-calf operation where we sell yearling cattle and market our beef direct to consumer.

I also serve as the I-35 Cattleman’s Association Vice President and am a licensed auctioneer with a small auction company. My wife and I purchased my family’s farm around 33 years ago when my folks decided it was time to slow down. Farming and ranching has always been my way of life and I have always found ways to be involved growing up from FFA in high school to Ag Club in college. I have also served on the University of Missouri Extension Council and our local Farm Bureau boards for many years. Currently, I serve on the church board and FFA Alumni board.

Why is it we can get great attendance for events like this, but it’s such a challenge to get members to show up for monthly or quarterly business meetings? Sadly, it is a common occurrence. Trust me. I get it. It can be an overwhelming and exhaustive feeling when numerous other responsibilities are piling up and now you are being encouraged to be more actively involved. You might be asking yourself where you will find the time, but I have a suggestion. If you are new to MCA, I encourage you to a long-time member in the association and learn from them. Let them know your strengths and how you can be an asset to the association. That single act alone can go a long way toward becoming more actively involved. For long-standing members, I’d encourage you to lead by example by using your strengths to mentor an incoming member or step into a leadership role.

As you can see my life, like many of yours, is hectic.

I have plenty to do. I didn’t really need another job and was hesitant about getting involved in another association. I’ve always been an avid supporter of being actively involved in associations or organizations which promote and advocate for me, my community and the industries important to me. Notice I said “actively involved,” there is a difference between being involved and being actively involved. According to google, the definition of being actively involved means you are doing more than merely paying dues or attending meetings, you are doing such things as serving on a committee or organizing projects.

I attended an affiliate meeting a few days ago. The affiliate has nearly 70 members, but there were only a handful of people present. The purpose of the meeting was to elect officers for the upcoming year; however, most of the evening centered around the question “How do we get more people involved?” This particular affiliate recently held their annual fundraising event with nearly 200 people in attendance. The event featured a nice prime rib dinner, presentation of scholarships, and

When we become actively involved it goes above and beyond attendance. Your involvement will allow you countless benefits like access to information and resources, professional development opportunities, opportunities to advocate for our industry, and have a voice in the policy. I believe one of the most important reasons to get actively involved is to connect with other cattle producers to build relationships with like-minded people.

I don’t have all the answers on how to get people actively involved; however, I do know all it took for me was someone asking me to step up. I believe that’s a good place to start. Think of the people who would be an asset to our organization. Invite family, friends, business acquaintances to join. Then I’d encourage you to ask them or others to take on a bigger role by serving on a committee, being an officer, or attending events like Cowboys at the Capitol. By stepping up to the challenge of being more actively involved, you strengthen not just your local affiliate and the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, but Missouri’s agricultural industry.

Observations from the Field with Sarah Kenyon, PhD., Region Four Grazing Coordinator How to Manage Broomsedge Bluestem In March, I wrote about how to tell the difference between Broomsedge and Little Bluestem. After examining your plants, you may have discovered that you do have Broomsedge. I also have a number of acres with this weed. Broomsedge may very well be the most problematic weed in pastures and hayfields.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to control; however, there are a few things that could help to minimize this weed.

Broomsedge Bluestem, or Sage Grass, typically grows in low fertility areas. Conducting soil tests, identifying soil deficiencies, and making steps to correct these deficiencies should be the first steps for management of this weed. Research and demonstrations in Missouri have identified correcting phosphorus deficiency can help to reduce the amount of Broomsedge over time. In other regions of the United States, potassium deficiency has been noted as the primary nutrient associated with this weed. While the specific mechanism is not well understood, it is clear fertility plays an important role in keeping Broomsedge in check.

Another consideration regarding fertility is low soil pH can reduce the availability of soil nutrients, including phosphorus and potassium which have been linked to reducing Broomsedge. Often times limestone is needed to increase soil pH along with phosphorus and potassium fertility. Taking a soil test can identify exactly what nutrients are needed. If you need help interoperating your soil test report, please reach out to one of the grazing coordinators.

Other considerations for controlling Broomsedge include management practices that promote the production of the desirable forage. This could include minimizing seed production for Broomsedge and interseeding more desirable forage. Cattle will graze Broomsedge when it is young and tender. Grazing during this growth stage can reduce seed production and may slow production of Broomsedge. Because Broomsedge is a perennial grass, seed production is not necessarily for plant survival. Therefore, grazing and minimizing seed production alone is unlikely to have a large impact on Broomsedge populations.

Typically, as Broomsedge populations increase, the amount of desirable forage decreases. Interseeding additional desirable species can create more competition for the Broomsedge and reduce the amount over time.

If Broomsedge is dominant, occurring fence line to fence line, then total renovation is likely the best option.

Glyphosate applications and smother crops can be a useful tool for removing a wide variety of unwanted weeds. Annual smother crops generally produce significant tonnage; while the renovation process can be daunting, higher yield is usually achieved. In some areas, using a roundup-ready crop could help; having multiple applications of glyphosate on the area could help to remove Broomsedge.

One question I am often asked about is if weed wipers can be used to remove Broomsedge. The answers is maybe, or under the right conditions. Weed wipers usually work best on weeds that grow taller than the desirable forage; because Broomsedge tends to grow at

the same height as many other forage grasses, it is not well suited for this approach. In some circumstances one may be able to use livestock to selectively graze the desirable forage leaving the Broomsedge mostly ungrazed. If this is achieved, then the Broomsedge would be taller than the other forage and a weed wiper could be successful. Usually for selective grazing, a short duration of grazing is needed.

Glyphosate applications should be applied to green, actively growing plants. Applications to yellow, dormant plants will not yield significant control of the weed.

Glyphosate applications, whether spraying the entire field, spot spraying, or using a weed wiper should be conducted during the summer month to control Broomsedge.

Cost share is available through NRCS for planting new stands. If you intend to renovate areas dominated

by Broomsedge, assistance is available. Missouri Cattleman’s Association Grazing Coordinators can help with questions, and you can find their contact information below and on page 5 of this issue and also on mocattle.com under staff.

BEEF CHECKOFF NEWS Missouri Beef Industry Council & KY3 Partnership: Serving Up Beef Across Screens The Missouri Beef Industry Council continues to find innovative ways to connect with consumers where they are at. One notable outreach effort to-date is a long-standing partnership with KY3 News, a trusted news leader in southwest Missouri. Through a series of engaging, food-focused media features - namely the weekly Beef Bites segments and monthly informative interviews called The Place, MBIC promotes beef education, culinary inspiration, and awareness of Missouri’s cattle industry both on-air and across digital streaming platforms.

The weekly Beef Bites segments are designed for consistency and visibility during KY3’s regular newscasts. The monthly informative interviews offer deeper insight into beef-related topics through spotlighting local nutritionists, farmers and food professionals who help connect viewers to the broader story of Missouri beef.

In addition to strong regional broadcast placement, the campaign extends to streaming platforms to meet audiences where they consume content most - on demand. MBIC’s strategic inclusion in streaming television has significantly amplified visibility. Over the course of the campaign, segments have appeared on major streaming services including Roku, Tubi, Pluto TV, and Sling.

From December 2024 through March 2025 alone, the campaign delivered over 143,000 total streaming impressions, with a monthly high of 42,874 impressions in January 2025. Notably, services like Roku and Sling TV contributed consistently strong numbers, reflecting their popularity among target demographics. This digital extension ensures that MBIC’s messaging is not only consistent but also scalable, reaching thousands of households across Missouri each month.

Looking ahead, MBIC is turning up the heat with an exciting new Summer Grilling Series that will run from May through August. Integrated across both Beef Bites and monthly interviews, this seasonal campaign will

showcase summer grilling recipes, and techniques to inspire viewers during peak outdoor cooking months.

Whether it’s highlighting a new spin on burgers or sharing tips for a perfectly grilled steak, the summer series aims to celebrate beef’s versatility and bring even more value to consumers’ mealtime routines.

This multi-platform strategy - leveraging the trusted voice of local television with the expansive reach of digital streaming - demonstrates how MBIC is evolving to meet the demands in a modern media environment.

By combining frequent, relatable content with strategic digital placements, MBIC is strengthening beef’s relevance, increasing consumer awareness, and reinforcing beef’s role as a nutritious, and sustainable protein option.

The KY3 partnership is more than just media. It’s meaningful communication with real results. Through compelling content, broad distribution, and timely seasonal campaigns, the Missouri Beef Industry Council continues to put beef at the center of the conversation and, more importantly, at the center of the plate.

Meet Your Chair Tracey Mershon is co-owner of Mershon Cattle and currently works with her husband Bruce in their family business, a commercial cattle operation located in Buckner. She is responsible for data collection on their cattle herd, HR administration and finance, communications and their new direct to consumer beef program.

Tracey currently serves as Chairwoman of the Missouri Beef Industry Council. Her main priority is to help drive demand for beef among consumers. Over the last six years as a Region 1 Board Member, she has successfully applied her knowledge and expertise to benefit the beef promotion and education programs. She has also earned NCBA’s Masters of Beef Advocacy certification and is BQA certified.

Tracey has more than 30 years of experience in marketing communications, corporate public relations, nonprofit fund development, and journalism. She has helped create and implement many highly successful public relations programs around the country.

Mershon Cattle has been recognized with the 2019 BIF Commercial Producer of the Year; 2018 Missouri Hereford Association Commercial Breeder of the Year; 2013 Missouri Angus Association Commercial Producer of the Year; and the Mershon’s have been named Farm Family of the Year twice by Jackson County, Missouri.

Tracey has been actively engaged in her local community and statewide organizations for over 30 years. She currently serves on the MU CAFNR Foundation board of trustees and on Centerpoint Medical Center’s board of directors. She has held leadership roles with the Mizzou Alumni Association, Griffiths Leadership Society, Truman Heartland Community Foundation, and Rose Brooks Center.

Tracey earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Missouri. She and Bruce are avid sports fans and have been Mizzou football season ticket holders for many years. They are members of the board of directors for the MU CAFNR Foundation and are members of the CAFNR Monticello Society. Bruce and Tracey have three sons and five grandchildren.

“Helping to run a family farm and multi-enterprise cattle operation has given me the opportunity to take on jobs I never dreamed I could tackle,” said Tracey.

Meet Miranda MCA’s New Manager of Membership

Miranda Zumbehl-Howard New beginnings with the cow people. When I told a friend that I was taking this position, Spenser told me it was a great fit because I would be with the cow people.

This has turned into a running joke with that small group of friends anytime they ask about my new job. I am very grateful to have this opportunity to work with my fellow cow people across the state.

I grew up in New Bloomfield, Missouri, on a Red Angus and Hereford cow-calf operation and a small direct-toconsumer feedlot. Today, my family and I run cows on the same ground my grandparents purchased when they moved to Central Missouri from St. Charles almost 50 years ago. My dad, brother and I are carrying on my grandparent’s legacy of being cattle producers. We are big believers in rotational grazing and putting up as little hay as we can. I always say I would rather move cows to a new paddock than feed a bale of hay.

I was blessed to spend all my summers as a kid in show rings across the country. We showed registered Salers and travelled to any show I could convince my dad to go to. Luckily, he was always up for packing the show trailer and heading out at 4 a.m. to hit every small jackpot we could. I never missed a Salers Junior National, regardless of the hours in the truck to get there. We also took every opportunity to show at American Royal, NAILE, and National Western.

Thanks mom and dad for the countless hours you spent away from the house and farm to let me follow my dreams!

Fast forward to the present and my husband, Lane, and I are raising our three boys, Dutton, 3, and twins Gibson and Kelton, 6 months, on that same farm and operation. Hopefully one day, these three Howard boys will enjoy spending their summers in the show barn as much as I did. Until they get to that point, they will just be tagging along with mom to watch from the stands.

I would not be as excited for the junior programs part of this job without my background and passion for showing cattle. I am ready to take on the challenge of planning the Missouri Cattlemen’s Youth Expo and hope to bring some new ideas to the table. I look forward to meeting all of the great cattlemen across the state of Missouri and helping your industry grow and thrive. If you see me at a show, meeting or conference, please come say hi and introduce yourself. I am always eager to hear from my fellow cow people and learn about their operations.

Dallas County Cattlemen With recent much needed spring rains and warmer temperatures, Dallas County Cattlemen are seeing a significant growth in pastures. Along with lush, green grass comes a plethora of unwanted weeds. Members of the Dallas County Cattlemen’s Association heard from an expert in the field of pasture management at the group’s April 8 meeting held at Prairie Grove School.

David Moore, MFA Inc. Range and Pasture Specialist, emphasized that the more pounds of beef produced per acre per year help cattlemen become more efficient and profitable. Sustainability of any operation evolves around profitability, according to Moore.

Moore said, “What we do to prepare for a drought helps us the next year.” He touted the importance of the need to soil sample, not to mow or graze below four inches, lime and control weeds, mitigate the effects of fescue endophyte, catch up on phosphorus and potassium, and practice species diversity.

Moore considers the most under utilized practice in pastures is species diversity. He believes that 30% of our grasses in pastures should be warm season. Moore’s presentation included a discussion of toxic plants in Missouri--with perilla mint being the number one most toxic. Two bites can lead to a dead cow. Corteva’s newest weed killer, Novagraz, allows white clover and lespedeza to survive.

Also talking at the meeting was Brant Gideon of Gideon Ag Drones located in Preston, Missouri. Gideon explained the advantages of using drones to spray and control weeds. Among those are no tracks left in the field, ability to spray on wet ground, efficient use on rough ground, ability to spray brush, and the use of GPS to spray.

Buffalo FFA officers Paige Henderson and Jordan Tucker informed the group of recent chapter activities.

A number of members will be taking a trip to a leadership conference in Washington, D.C. this summer with numerous other educational stops. As always we appreciate all our speakers taking the time to attend our meeting.

Johnson County Cattlemen Johnson County started the year doing a cook for the Johnson County Farm Bureau’s thank a farmer event at Ag Power in Centerview. It was a great turnout feeding over 100 farmers in the area. Johnson County held its first meeting of the year on March 10 in Leeton. The meal was sponsored by Holganix Soil Health. April and May are filled with fun events such as supporting the Hope Outdoors - Central Missouri Chapter with a few cooks and supporting some local FFA banquets.

Southwest Missouri Cattlemen The April meeting of the Southwest Missouri Cattlemen’s Association kicked off on a high note thanks to the recent rain. With much of Southwest Missouri experiencing an unusually dry winter and the U.S. Drought Monitor reporting moderate drought throughout spring, the rainfall we got in early April was a real blessing, with more forecasted through the end of the month.

Speaking of good things happening in April, the featured keynote speakers from FCS Financial in the Joplin office, are some of the finest folks you’ll come across. More on that in a minute. First, we want to thank FCS Financial for sponsoring our meal, which was prepared and served by Teri & Company Catering, out of Lockwood. The beef enchiladas, sides and desserts alone were worth the drive to attend the meeting!

Back to the FCS Financial team, you may have already met one or more of them, since they’re part of the local agricultural community and attend many of the events in our area. Other than when you need a financial product, is it possible to look forward to seeing and visiting with your banking representative? If you’ve met Beth Luebbering, Vice President, Ag & Rural Lending, then you know the answer to that question is a resounding, yes! Commodity Trades Welcome

We always look forward to the update on the Eldon Cole MU Livestock Facility by Jay Chism, Southwest Research, Extension and Education Center Director, on the Eldon Cole University of Missouri Livestock Facility. This month we can see the progress with poles in the ground. It sounds like work will begin moving fast and working pens going in very soon. In addition to livestock, this building will house a set of drones to be used for agricultural applications. MU Extension Specialists are providing a drone training session at the MU Southwest Research Center on May 1.

“They will cover the various kinds of drones currently being used in agriculture and what is required of remote pilots to utilize these technologies,” said Caleb O’Neal, MU plant science field specialist. “Our team will introduce many capabilities of small drones and large utility drones commonly used for spraying or spreading materials as well as give examples of how these technologies can be utilized by entrepreneurs.”

The SMC grill team will be firing up the grill for the grand opening and customer appreciation day at Whitehead Farm Supply, second location for Hills Feed & More in LA Russell, on April 26. Next up is the Missouri 4-H Dairy Cow Camp, in Freistatt May 21-23. The grill team will be cooking on the 23rd. Cow Camp is sponsored by MU Extension. Extension staff and industry professionals will provide education and hands-on assistance for area youth. The next event is also in Freistatt is the 2025 Lawrence County Youth Fair, a livestock show for 4-H and FFA members in Missouri June 5-7. The grill team will be cooking on the 7th. Please plan to support your local businesses, youth in agriculture, and enjoy some outstanding beef while you’re at it!

Following the May 6 meeting, the next meeting is three warm summer months away on September 2.

I’m unsure if becoming more weather-aware is a result of increasing age or the ranching lifestyle, but when I think of June-August the first thing that comes to mind is working in summer heat. Before we move into the warmer months, consider preparing early for the upcoming hay season. Hopefully your soil tests, fertilizer applications, and the forecasted rain arrived at the perfect time, and everyone has their tractors and baling equipment serviced, just in time for another great hay harvest.

Newton and McDonald County Cattlemen The Newton and McDonald County Cattlemen’s Association held their meeting on Mach 18, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at the Newton County Fairgrounds. There were approximately 130 members and guest present.

The meeting was sponsored by Oklahoma Steel & Wire, and the USDA. The cook team of Nick Neece, Randy Drake, Kelton Miller, and Alan Drake grilled steak for the meeting. Paula Moorehead brought baked beans, and potato salad and members provided various desserts including home made ice cream.

The meeting was brought to order by President Lynn Moorehead with the Pledge of Allegiance. Ronnie Tosh offered a prayer for the meal and safe travels for all who attended. Everyone enjoyed their meal before the business portion of the meeting was conducted.

At 7 p.m. the business portion of the meeting was started with Jenny Drake reading the minutes of the previous meeting. The minutes were approved by the members. Jerry Davis then gave the treasurer’s report, which was also approved by vote of the members and passed unanimously.

Nick Neece called Ronnie Rogers to the front to present him with a special Certificate of Sensitivity from Cindy with Willis Printing Group. He was honored for his commitment to assisting with the membership directory and the sensitivity he displayed in doing so.

Aly Francis was introduced to the membership she was visiting to do an article on Ronnie Rogers as the Pioneer Award winner. She works for the MCA as the manager of strategic solutions. She was raised on a cow/ calf operation in Northeast Missouri. We appreciate her being with us.

We welcomed them to our community.

Jerry Davis and Nick Neece put a motion before the membership to do a Herdsmen Award for only 4-H kids at the Newton County and McDonald County Fairs this summer. The proposal was to award $500 to each county for Herdsmen Awards. The motion was made by Randy Drake to approve the proposal with Fred Parks offering to second the motion. The motion passed.

Chez Kleeman with the USDA put on a program explaining how to distinguish between a Black Vulture and a Turkey Vulture. He brought in examples of both birds along with a juvenile Turkey Vulture. He also explained what we needed to do if one of our calves appears to be killed by a Black Vulture and how to make a claim. We were all provide with applications from Missouri Farm Bureau for permits to kill up to ten Black Vultures per permit.

Jenny Drake made the motion to adjourn the meeting.

The motion passed unanimously with members and guest stacking tables and chairs.

It was announced that the next Cowboys at the Capitol for our region is April 23. The Annual Cattlemen’s Steak Fry will be Saturday, June 14.

St. Clair County Cattlemen The St. Clair County Cattlemen’s Association met on Tuesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. at Four Fillies in Lowry City.

President Weston Shelby called the meeting to order, with 28 members in attendance. Regan Hollinsworth and the staff of Four Fillies served the meal. Heiman Inc. sponsored the meeting. Thank you to Heiman Inc. for sponsoring our meal and to Regan and all of her staff for preparing a delicious meal.

Leland Browning with Heiman Inc. was the presenter for the meeting. Leland spoke with the group about developing heifers. He presented a handout with information about the heifer’s weight loss and gain throughout the calving process. He spoke about the difference between hand-feeding and self-feeding.

Leland stressed the importance of self-feeding and how this can be beneficial to your heifers. He spoke with the group about a starter program and gave information about different supplements and support for the cattle.

Lastly, Leland stressed the importance of a good mineral program when developing your heifers. When putting all of these steps together it can help with the development of our heifers.

President Weston Shelby then opened the business meeting. He discussed cattlemen’s activities from April to June. He announced to the group the St. Clair County Cattlemen had received several scholarship

applications, and the local association would be awarding two scholarships this year.

February Pork and Beef Exports Below Year-Ago February exports of U.S. pork were moderately lower than a year ago, despite continued success in Mexico and Central America, according to data released

by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation. February beef exports were also below last year after trending higher in January, while lamb muscle cut exports posted a year-over-year increase for the fifth consecutive month.

Robust pork demand in Central America and Mexico offset by slowdown in Japan, Korea February pork exports totaled 241,179 metric tons, down 4% from the large year-ago volume, while value fell 2% to $671.5 million. Exports soared to Central America in February and export value to Mexico exceeded $200 million for the eighth consecutive month.

Shipments also increased to the Philippines, New Zealand and Cuba. For the first two months of 2025, pork exports were 3% below last year’s record pace at 485,144 mt, with value down 2% to $1.34 billion.

“I can’t say enough about the tremendous demand for U.S. pork in Mexico and Central America, where the U.S. industry continues to move a wider range of centerof-the-plate cuts to a variety of end users,” said USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom. “Unfortunately, the strong performance there has been offset by a slow start

to the year in Japan and South Korea. And although February shipments to China were slightly above last year, exports may have been larger if not for the uncertainty over plant eligibility, which wasn’t resolved until mid-March.”

In February and March of this year, many U.S. pork, beef and poultry plants and cold storage facilities were due for a five-year eligibility renewal by China’s General Administration of Customs. Pork and poultry plants were renewed on the March 16 expiration date, but GACC still has not renewed the eligibility of any U.S. beef establishments, and the majority of U.S. beef production is now ineligible for China Beef exports higher to Korea and Canada; Uncertainty looms for China Beef exports totaled 98,198 mt in February, down 5.5% from a year ago, while value declined 4% to just over $800 million. February exports increased year-over year to South Korea, Canada, Egypt and the Philippines, and reached the highest value on record to Panama.

Shipments were lower to Japan, China/Hong Kong and Mexico, though beef variety meat exports to Mexico increased. January-February shipments were 1% below last year’s pace at 201,038 mt, but value increased 1% to $1.6 billion.

“It was encouraging to see beef exports to Korea trend higher despite considerable economic and political headwinds, and Canada’s demand for U.S. beef has been very robust to start the year,” Halstrom said. “But exports to China lost momentum in February, likely due in part to the slowdown after Chinese New Year and the questions about plant eligibility. Unfortunately, China has still failed to address the issue of beef plant renewals.

Growth was led by Mexico, where shipments climbed 133% to 126 mt, valued at just over $400,000 (up 135%). For the second consecutive month, export volume to Mexico was the highest since November 2022. January-February exports to all destinations increased 17% in volume totaling 469 mt and 6% in value at $2.6 million. With a wider range of lamb cuts – including shoulder and flap meat – gaining popularity in Mexico’s foodservice sector, January-February exports to Mexico climbed 55% to 246 mt, valued at $856,000.

Shipments to the Caribbean also trended higher, led by growth in Trinidad and Tobago and the LeewardWindward Islands.

“USMEF is hopeful that instead of retaliating, other trading partners will choose to lower trade barriers for U.S. exports,” he said. “This would certainly ease the

The Original Do-It-All Breed: Brangus Source: Kyle Caldwell, International Brangus Breeders Association A hot topic on every good cattleman’s mind is, and has always been, “How do I get the most out of my cowherd?”

For some, that means investing in the terminal side of the equation with a bull that will sire high grading, highly marketable feeder calves. For everyone, it should mean investing in the fertility of the cowherd, ensuring that every cow drags a heavy calf to wean every year.

Because after all, a dead calf (or no calf at all) is worth nothing to anybody. A follow up question, can a single breed of cattle combine elite fertility and terminal traits into one package? With Brangus, the answer is a resounding “Yes!”

Few can dispute the added value a well-built Brangus female brings to the herd by combining hardiness, longevity, adaptability, and early puberty in an attractive solid black or red package. However, the mechanisms that make Brangus the best cow to eat grass, and well adapted to Missouri beef producers, is not always understood.

The key to a Brangus cow’s unmatched fertility lies in her more developed sweat glands which also lends heat tolerance, environmental adaptability and fescue toxicity resistance, all thanks to the 3/8-Brahman side of her genetic profile.

Brangus and Ultra cattle have a greater tolerance for fluctuating temperatures, particularly in the spring and summer months due to more developed sweat glands.

Moreover, Brangus cattle shed hair faster during the spring, according to one University of Florida study1.

Endophyte-infected tall fescue can be a problem for many Missouri beef producers, causing decreases in body condition scores, weight gain, milk production and longer intervals between calving and re-cycling.

According to a white paper from the University of Kentucky2, these issues happen primarily due to increased heat stress. When cattle consume endophyteinfected fescue, the fungus raises core body temperature, causing the issues listed above. With Brangus and Ultra cattle, these issues are much less pronounced or completely mitigated due to a stout combination of heat tolerance and hybrid vigor.

Not only is the Brangus cow more capable in harsh environments, but she also brings an extra shot of longevity to the cowherd as well. The average Brangus cow stays in the herd an extra 3-5 years longer than straight-bred British cows. With weaned calf prices eclipsing $2,000 per head, an extra $10,000 over the lifetime of a cow adds up to big dollars back in producer’s pockets. Brangus cows are Built to Last.

I have spent a great deal of space in this article talking about the fertility advantages of Brangus cattle, but the reality is these cattle are not one-trick ponies.

Modern Brangus cattle walk the fine line, balancing maternal and terminal better than any other breed out there. Fresh from the latest round of the International Brangus Breeders Association’s Brangus Value Project benchmarking the terminal value of Brangus-influenced feeder steers, Brangus-influenced steers fed in Southwest Kansas outgained the average feeder steer in Southwest Kansas by ¾-pound every day eating ¾ less feed per pound of feedlot gain. Those same steers went on to grade over 90% Choice and higher with nearly 50% grading Premium Choice. Brangus feeder steers are Built for Profit.

As you can see, Brangus cattle are more than calf raising machines, their calves can grow and grade with the industry’s best. The Brangus breed has been cultivated on practical, progressive performance for the commercial cattlemen to add more to their operation’s bottom line. If Brangus cows can raise a calf 30 to 50 pounds heavier than straight bred English cows, have those calves grade 90% Choice AND do all of that in some of the most inhospitable environments out there, what more could you ask for? In this regard, Brangus are truly Built for Business.

Brangus Value Project Proves Brangus Are Built for Profit Source: International Brangus Breeders Association The Brangus Value Project, launched nearly four years ago as a collaborative effort between the International Brangus Breeders Association Breed Improvement Committee and the International Brangus Breeders Foundation, continues to showcase the breed’s superior economic and production advantages. This initiative was designed to benchmark the terminal value of Brangus-influenced feeder steers in feedlots and packing plants while assessing the breed’s competitiveness in these environments.

The project began with the selection of 17 influential Brangus sires, chosen based on the number of progeny recorded in the IBBA database. These sires were bred to commercial cows, and the resulting steer calves were DNA-verified before being sent to a feedyard in southwest Kansas. There, they were managed until they reached finishing weight before being processed at a beef packer. Comprehensive carcass grading data was collected, and steak samples from each steer were sent to Texas Tech University for tenderness testing.

To date, three groups totaling 300 steers have been included in the project, producing key findings in feed efficiency, grading performance, tenderness, and—most critically—economic value.

Brangus steers in the feedyard consistently outperformed their counterparts, gaining ¾ of a pound more per day while consuming ½ pound less feed for every pound

of live weight gained. Over a 150-day feeding period, this efficiency translates to significant cost savings and increased profitability at harvest.

In terms of carcass quality, Brangus steers demonstrated exceptional grading performance, with 90% achieving USDA Choice or Prime, and nearly 40% grading Premium Choice—exceeding the industry average of 85% Choice. Additionally, tenderness testing results were outstanding, with 96% of the steak samples categorized as tender or very tender.”

The most compelling finding for producers is the economic value of Brangus-influenced cattle. When accounting for feed efficiency savings and grid premiums, Brangus steers consistently outperformed commodity projections by approximately $200 per head.

“These results challenge the long-held belief that indicus-influenced cattle struggle to compete with their northern counterparts,” said Kyle Caldwell, IBBA’s director of field services & strategic projects. “The data clearly demonstrates that the traditional ‘eared discount’ can become a ‘Brangus premium’. Producers in heatstressed environments, where Brangus and Ultra cattle excel, can achieve remarkable results with high-quality Brangus genetics.”

The fourth set of steers is currently on feed and will be harvested in the summer of 2025 as the BVP continues to validate the breed’s performance through data-driven research. The results reaffirm what Brangus breeders have long known—Brangus cattle are truly Built for Profit.

Jackson and Sankey Elected to IBBA Board of Directors Source: International Brangus Breeders Association Jodi Jackson of Waco, Texas, and Sharee Sankey, Council Grove, Kansas, were recently elected to the International Brangus Breeders Association Board of Directors and began serving three-year terms each in March of this year.

Jackson’s lifelong passion for the Brangus breed stems from her childhood growing up on a registered Brangus operation in Oklahoma. Her early involvement in junior Brangus programs laid a strong foundation for her continued dedication to the breed. A graduate of Oklahoma State University, Jackson was a standout member of the livestock judging team before joining the staff of the Brangus Journal, where she later served as managing editor.

Today, she and her husband, David, operate a diversified agricultural enterprise. David oversees a large dairy operation, while Jodi manages the Brangus herd.

Together, they also raise corn, sudangrass, oats, jiggs, and coastal bermuda, and run a sprig business.

Jackson has held several leadership roles within the Brangus community, including serving as director and president of the Texas Brangus Breeders Association and as past president of the International Brangus Auxiliary.

She has been a dedicated participant in IBBA events and currently serves on the breed’s finance committee and has served on the commercial marketing committee.

Additionally, she was a member of the Brangus 75th Celebration’s Historical Committee.

Their children, Emily and Connor, both grew up in the junior Brangus programs, and Jackson remained deeply involved in junior association activities throughout their participation.

The Sankeys’ children, Cody and Jeana, were both active members of the International Junior Brangus Breeders Association and National Junior Angus Association. Both served on the IJBBA Board of Directors and Jeana held the National Junior Angus Association Vice Chairman position. Today, both remain involved in the cattle industry through their own operations while continuing to contribute to 6N Ranch.

This marks Sankey’s second term on the IBBA Board of Directors. Her service record includes chairing and contributing to the IBBA Promotion and Show Committees, co-chairing three National Junior Brangus Shows, and advising the IJBBA. She has held the office of president of both the Kansas Brangus Breeders Association and Kansas Angus Association. She is also a past president of the International Brangus Auxiliary and the American Angus Auxiliary. The Sankeys have been honored as Herdsman of the Year in both the Brangus and Angus breeds, and she has judged numerous state, regional, and national showmanship competitions.

Sankey is enthusiastic about the future of the breed and is honored to represent her region. She believes there is strong momentum behind Brangus cattle and sees significant opportunity for continued growth and success.

MU Extension Hosts Bull Breeding Soundness Exams May 15 in SE Missouri Source: MU Extension News Specialists highlight key strategies to prepare bulls for peak breeding performance.

DONIPHAN, Mo. – With breeding season approaching, University of Missouri Extension specialists emphasize the importance of proper bull preparation.

“Strategic bull management directly impacts reproductive success and herd profitability,” said Jason C. Morris, MU Extension agricultural business specialist.

MU Extension will host breeding soundness exams Thursday, May 15, at Hillcrest Animal Hospital in Poplar Bluff.

Alexis Stumpe, MU Extension livestock field specialist, said March-May is the ideal time to implement preparation protocols.

“We recommend a four-part approach focusing on body condition, structural soundness, health protocols and fertility testing,” she said.

She stresses that bulls should enter breeding season at a body condition score (BCS) of 6 on a 9-point scale.

“A bull at BCS 6 has adequate fat reserves without being over-conditioned,” she said. “This optimizes both libido and breeding stamina.”

Producers can access detailed scoring guidelines in MU Extension publication G2230, “Body Condition Scoring of Beef Cattle,” which is available for free download at https://extension.missouri.edu/publications/g2230.

Sound feet and legs are nonnegotiable for breeding bulls, Stumpe says. She also recommends foot scoring, with ideal bulls scoring between 3 and 7 on hoof and pastern assessments.

Both specialists highlight the importance of veterinary collaboration.

“A comprehensive health program should include vaccinations and parasite control for new bulls,” said Morris. “Preventive health care is one of the highestreturn investments in a breeding operation.”

The breeding soundness exam (BSE) serves as the cornerstone of reproductive preparation.

“A BSE evaluates everything from semen quality to structural fitness,” Morris said. “We recommend scheduling exams 30-60 days before breeding to allow time for replacements if needed.”

MU Extension collaborates with veterinary clinics and pharmaceutical partners to host specialized BSE Days across Missouri.

“These events provide education on genomic testing, foot scoring and BCS evaluation while offering rebates on health products,” Morris said.

Morris underscores the economic implications: “A single infertile bull can cost producers thousands in lost pregnancies. Testing is significantly cheaper than the alternative.”

Producers are encouraged to contact participating veterinary clinics or their local MU Extension center for scheduling. Whether through BSE Days or your regular veterinarian, the important thing is to get bulls tested, Stumpe said.

Ag Drone Training Set for May 10 in Montgomery City Source: MU Extension News MONTGOMERY CITY, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension specialists will provide a day of discussion and hands-on training for using drones in Missouri agriculture Saturday, May 10, in Montgomery City.

Training organizers say the event will cover kinds of drones used in agriculture and what is required of remote pilots to use these technologies. MU Extension specialists will introduce many capabilities of small drones and large utility drones commonly used for spraying or spreading materials as well as give examples of how these technologies can be used by entrepreneurs.

The program is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Merchants Building, Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 700 S. Sturgeon, Montgomery City.

A morning of classroom lecture and discussion will be followed by a catered lunch at noon. The afternoon will be devoted to field exercises for which attendees will receive training on manual flight maneuvers of small and large drones as well as autonomous mission planning and task implementation for drone imaging, spraying and spreading.

Organizers say that by the end of the day attendees should have a firm grasp of the many ways drones can be used in Missouri agriculture, the licensing and certifications required to pilot these technologies, basics of aircraft performance, weather and safety considerations, imaging and mapping tools, calibrating sprayer and spreader functions on utility drones, and manual flight controls for these aircraft.

A $175 per person registration fee covers trainings, materials packet and catered lunch. Preregistration is required by noon Friday, May 9, for an accurate meal count and to ensure adequate materials. Pregister at http://muext.us/DronesInAgMay10.

Capitol Update with Nancy Giddens & Shannon Cooper Why Voluntary COOL Protects Missouri Cattlemen As you know, few topics spark more conversation in our industry than Country of Origin Labeling.

It’s back in play this session thanks to HCR 9 and HCR 15, resolutions introduced by Representatives Mazzie Christensen and Keith Elliott, that push for a government-mandated COOL system.

We all agree consumers deserve to know where their beef comes from. And let’s be honest, we raise some of the best beef in the country. But let us be just as clear: a state-mandated labeling program is not the way to get there.

At the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, we believe the best solution is one that empowers producers, not burdens them. That’s why we support a voluntary, industry-led COOL program— one that’s built by cattlemen, for cattlemen.

Here’s why.

A government mandate sounds good in theory, but in practice, it’s a logistical nightmare. As many of you remember, the federal COOL law was scrapped in 2015 after the World Trade Organization ruled it unfairly discriminated against our trade partners. The result?

Think about the complexity of our supply chain. Beef from multiple states and countries is often co-mingled during processing. If a government mandate forces packers and retailers to track and label every cut by origin, the costs go up— and those costs don’t fall on Washington lawmakers, they fall on us, the producers.

Nancy Giddens & Shannon Cooper A voluntary program flips the script. It allows you, the producer, to opt in and differentiate your product when it makes sense for your operation. Maybe you’re direct-marketing locally raised beef. Maybe you’re part of a branded program that already highlights origin. Great, lean into it. But for those of you selling through commercial markets, a voluntary system avoids unnecessary red tape and cost.

Even more important, a voluntary system respects your freedom to run your business your way. Our association has always stood for producer-driven solutions, not government overreach. We believe in market access, not mandates. And we believe Missouri cattle producers, not bureaucrats, should decide what’s best for their operations.

Let’s also recognize this isn’t about avoiding transparency. It’s about providing that transparency on our terms. Through MCA and other allied organizations, we can build and promote labeling programs consumers trust and we control.

So, what can you do? Stay engaged. Talk to your legislators.

Let them know that MCA supports COOL when it’s voluntary, market-driven, and industry-led. Urge them to oppose HCR 9 and 15. These resolutions, though wellintended, open the door to costly mandates that threaten our independence and profitability.

At the end of the day, we all want to keep Missouri beef strong, trusted and competitive. Let’s make sure the path forward is one we lead and not one imposed on us.
