Missouri Cattle Industry Convention & Trade Show

We are just a few short months away from the Annual Missouri Cattle Industry Convention & Trade Show.

Cattle producers and industry partners from across the state will gather to discuss policy, learn about new technologies, catch up with old friends, and see some new faces along the way. The theme for this year is “Forging the Future” as we navigate the ever-changing terrain of the beef cattle industry together. The convention is set to take place on January 21st to the 23rd, 2026. with Anita Vanderwert

Rooted in Heritage, Shaped by Experience: A Lifetime Shaped by Cattle In Missouri’s cattle community, countless stories are tied to family, tradition, and the quiet determination that marks rural life. Yet some stories stand out because they combine heritage with leadership, perspective, and a lifelong commitment to advancing the industry.

The story of Anita Vanderwert is one of those. Cattle have never been just part of the landscape—they have been the backdrop, the education, and the heartbeat of her entire life. Long before she traveled the world studying agriculture or built a Simmental Angus program with her family, her foundation was formed standing beside her father in barns, showrings, and pastures across the Midwest.

A Legacy Passed Down Her story begins when her parents, Ron and Marlene Geddes, moved from Iowa to Lee’s Summit, Missouri, so her father could run the legendary J.C. Penney Angus Farm.

Anita’s father, Ron ( Jim), played an unmistakable role in shaping the cattlewoman she would become. A talented stockman, he judged shows across North America and showed seven grand champions at the National Western in Denver across multiple breeds, a rare accomplishment that left an impression not only on the industry, but on his young daughter working alongside him. He worked for several of the largest and most influential Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, and Charolais breeders of the time, handling elite genetics and setting standards for high-quality cattle.

Those early memories weren’t casual exposures, they were an education. Anita learned what structural correctness meant long before she could define it. She absorbed the rhythm of ranch work, the responsibility of caring for animals, and the wisdom of cattlemen across the U.S. Anita was the youngest of four children, and her parents were her first and most influential mentors. Her childhood

The Vanderwerts lessons—study structure, value good cow families, work hard, and never cut corners—became the foundation on which she built her life in agriculture.

A Youth Shaped by Leadership, Learning, and the Show Ring As a teenager, Anita became involved with the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association. In the late 1980s, she earned the role of MO Beef Queen. The title allowed her to travel across Missouri, represent producers, and speak on behalf of the beef industry—experiences that strengthened her confidence and communication skills.

Her reputation in the show ring also began early. At the first-ever MCA Junior Show, Anita won showmanship.

Showing became more than a contest; it became a stepping-stone to leadership, connecting her with mentors and future industry peers. Her leadership skills were further demonstrated when she served as president of the American International Junior Charolais Association, a role that expanded her influence and commitment to youth development within the beef industry.

One of her most defining childhood accomplishments, however, came through FFA. Through competitive success, she earned her way onto an FFA livestock judging team that judged in Scotland and toured agricultural regions across Europe. For a young Missourian, the experience opened her eyes to global livestock production and sparked a lifelong appreciation for agricultural systems around the world.

Academic Growth and a Global Agricultural Lens Anita went on to graduate from the University of Missouri, an experience that broadened her understanding of agriculture beyond the barn. She developed a deeper appreciation for policy, economic forces, and the science behind production—knowledge that would serve her well in the decades to come.

Her education didn’t end with a diploma. In the years since, she’s traveled to more than 30 countries studying agriculture, gaining firsthand understanding of how different regions produce food, manage land, and approach livestock production. Those experiences profoundly shaped her perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing U.S. cattle producers.

will take the next step in his academic journey, beginning medical school at the University of Missouri—a testament to the work ethic and ambition nurtured within the family.

What she learned was striking: despite differences in language, culture, environment, and scale, good producers everywhere share the same core values—stewardship, pride, resilience, and a deep respect for the animals in their care.

Carrying Tradition Forward: Sycamore Creek SimAngus Ranch Today, Anita’s story continues through the work she does alongside Wayne and Ethan on their Simmental Angus herd. They moved their operation from Monroe to Howard County, and it evolved from a cow-calf operation that feeds out cattle and backgrounds calves to producing seedstock. Today, they focus on efficient, maternal, fescuetough genetics that produce calves capable of performing well from birth to harvest.

A Career Built in Agriculture Her professional path has remained deeply rooted in the cattle and animal health industries. Anita has worked for: • American-International Charolais Association, gaining hands-on experience in association management, junior activities, and breed promotion • An agricultural advertising agency in Chicago working on the Case IH account • National Cattlemen’s Beef Association in Denver in Membership and Industry Relations • A St. Louis marketing agency, where she managed the Merck Animal Health account • Brownfield Ag News, where she used her marketing expertise to connect companies with producers across the Midwest Today, she brings her experience to the Missouri ALOT program, helping develop the next generation of agricultural leaders.

Beyond her professional roles, Anita has consistently demonstrated a commitment to agricultural leadership and service. She has served on the board of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters, as president of the Agricultural Alumni Association at Mizzou, and is a current trustee for CAFNR. In addition, she serves on the Youth in Ag committee for the Missouri State Fair and the Missouri Wine & Grape marketing committee.

Their son, Ethan, has continued the tradition of leadership and excellence. He is a past president of the Missouri 4-H Council and a past member of the Missouri Junior Cattlemen’s Board, reflecting the same dedication to agriculture that shaped his parents’ lives. This summer, he

They market bulls and packages of bred heifers, earning a reputation from commercial cattlemen who value practical, balanced genetics, longevity, structural correctness, and excellent disposition. Every animal on the ranch reflects the decades of accumulated knowledge between them.

Their ranch is more than a business—it’s a continuation of a legacy. The values Anita learned growing up are the same ones she works to pass down—to her family, to her customers, and to the next generation of young cattle producers watching from the sidelines just as she once did.

Carrying on a Missouri Legacy From the J.C. Penney Farm to the judging rings of Scotland, from the University of Missouri to more than 30 countries exploring agriculture, Anita’s story is one of family, dedication, and lifelong involvement.

Guided by the lessons her father instilled and supported by her husband and son, she continues to honor the legacy that shaped her—raising high-quality cattle, serving Missouri producers, and helping build a strong future for the next generation of cattlemen and cattlewomen.

Active in Missouri Cattlemen’s—and Leading It Forward Her connection to the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association began in the show ring and grew through years of advocacy, leadership, and service. This year marks a milestone: she is deeply honored and excited to begin serving as the 2026 Missouri Cattlemen’s Association President.

She looks forward to representing producers, strengthening MCA’s grassroots voice, and continuing the organization’s long-standing mission to support Missouri’s beef community.

The Missouri cattle industry has been shaped by many hands over many generations—and Anita Vanderwert’s story stands as a testament to the dedication, passion, and resilience needed to keep this industry thriving.

A Family Grounded in Agricultural Leadership Anita’s own devotion to the cattle industry is mirrored by her husband’s distinguished career. Her husband, Wayne, holds a PhD in Animal Science and has made significant contributions to the livestock sector. He previously served as Executive Director of the North American Limousin Foundation and the American Gelbvieh Association, helping guide breed development, supply-chain support, and genetic improvement at a national level. Before his association leadership, he worked as an Extension Agent, where he supported producers through education, outreach, and practical on-farm problem solving.

Their expertise and service have not only shaped the industry but also strengthened the foundation of the ranching and livestock-focused life the couple shares.

To be completely honest, when I started this “gig” as the Missouri Cattlewomen’s President, I had no clue what I was doing. If it were not for the people below, my year would have been frustrating and chaos.

Marsha Corbin, Sue Day, Mary Kay Lyle, Janet Crow and the MCW Board—thank you for showing our industry that women are right there in the “trenches” alongside the men, getting the job done. You are some of the hardest-working people I know, and your dedication, both on and off the farm, does not go unnoticed. Thank you for all you do!

I know I have forgotten some but just know I appreciate each and every one of you. Your dedication to our industry does not go unnoticed by me and my family.

MCW Business Note

At the November board meeting MCW voted to present a bylaws change to our membership. Below is the current version of the bylaws to be changed and the proposed change. We will be voting on this at the January Annual Meeting. Please make a point to join us and vote.

Bylaws suggested change:

2021 version Article II—Membership 1. Membership in the Missouri CattleWomen is classified as Member, Collegiate Member, Student Member, Associate Member and Honorary Member. a. Members shall be women who own farms, who live on farms, or who are directly associated in livestock and farming industries and pay dues to the Association.

Classic Beef Pot Roast Now this is a crave-worthy dinner. Tender beef pot roast cooked low and slow with carrots and potatoes. This is as classic as it gets.

Ingredients: 1 beef Cross Rib Chuck Roast (2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pounds) 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 4 cups reduced-sodium beef broth

2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves 1 pound red-skinned potatoes (about 1-1/2-inch diameter), cut in half 1 pound carrots, peeled, cut into 1-1/2-inch pieces 2 large onions, cut into 8 wedges each

Cooking: Combine flour, salt and pepper; coat beef Cross Rib Chuck Roast with 2 tablespoons flour mixture. Reserve remaining flour mixture. Heat oil in stock pot over medium heat until hot. Place roast in stockpot; brown evenly. Pour off drippings.

Combine broth, tomato paste and thyme in stock pot; whisk in reserved flour mixture. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover tightly and simmer 1-3/4 to 2 hours. Stir gravy. Add potatoes, carrots and onions to stockpot; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover tightly and simmer 45 minutes to 1 hour or until roast and vegetables are fork-tender.

Carve roast into slices or chunks; serve with vegetables and gravy.

with Mike Deering Hello, Walls Classic country music has always been my thing. My taste in music drives some people bonkers, but I so love the old school traditional sound with real world lyrics that pack a punch. The story songs of yesterday are what I prefer. I often relate my everyday experiences to a song. Faron Young’s “Hello Walls” is about a guy who is lonely and all he can force himself to do is sit around his empty house and talk to the walls, windows, and ceiling. I feel his pain. I’ve been there, but usually while in a crowded building called the Missouri State Capitol.

While hundreds of people are in the building, our lobbyists, Nancy Giddens and Shannon Cooper, would likely agree it’s the loneliest place on earth.

While at the Capitol, you isolate yourself from anything that could get your mind off task. You trust no one and share little. It is about winning at the end of the day, and I believe we are fighting for the right things. We are fighting for an industry that is vital to sustaining life on this planet. We are fighting for families who want to make a living off the land without unnecessary government interference. While lonely, your staff and legislative team are focused on protecting and advancing this industry. We fight to win.

I have sat alone oh so many times in that building just talking to the walls. I just wish they’d talk back because I know they’ve seen and heard it all. It is easy to get depressed in that building and that’s why legislators get so excited when the Cowboys at the Capitol program is going on every single Wednesday of legislative session.

Executive Vice President Legislators get to hear from genuine people who have no ulterior motive and are there on their own time and dime. They are there for the right reasons and people know that.

The presence of our members at the Capitol is a big deal to so many and it makes a difference. I personally want to thank each and every member who has ever participated in the program. It is effective and puts a positive image on our association and on our industry.

As our association works to establish policy priorities, your voice matters. Please get engaged and be that resource legislators can trust and rely on. With so much chaos and distractions, we can influence change by just being honest, genuine people. You bring sanity to an insane place where we often find ourselves talking to the walls. The 2026 legislative session begins on January 7 and Cowboys at the Capitol will kick off on January 28.

Our association is special, and your membership is why it exists. If you want to participate in Cowboys at the Capitol but aren’t sure how it works, please contact me or your regional vice president. We will do all we can to make your visit worthwhile.

Observations from the Field with Doug Mertens, Region Two Grazing Coordinator New Kind of Resolutions It’s a new year, that means it’s time to make some resolutions, right? Many of us will make resolutions as the new year begins, I’m going to eat better, exercise more or spend less time on devices. All of those are great ideas, but how about setting goals for our cattle operations and our pastures? This is the time, as we begin a new year, to think about improvements that we can make that can provide benefits to our pastures and cattle.

One of the first things to consider is the forages in the pasture. What is the species mix? Is it predominately fescue or is it a mix of clovers and grasses, maybe some native forages? Is brush or weeds an issue? Taking a bit of time to think about this can help build a plan to improve our grazing.

Fescue pastures make up a significant percentage of Missouri pastures. Some despise it, but it is very well suited for our weather and with management it can provide the nutrition the cows need. Adding a legume to those fescue pastures can improve forage quality and has the added benefits of providing nitrogen to the soil.

Legumes also have tap roots, which can over time break compaction zones and allow for better water infiltration.

Frost seeding is an efficient way to establish legumes by spreading seed during the winter and letting natural freeze-thaw cycles work into the soil. Legumes can be mixed with fertilizer or can be broadcast with seeders or drones.

Pasture quality can be affected by invasive species, brush or weeds. You may be considering an herbicide application to help control these problem areas. Now is the time to start talking to your herbicide supplier about the best product and time to control the problems in your pastures. Unfortunately, there is not one product that will take care of every problem or one application timing. This is why it’s important to think about the biggest problem and tackle it first. During this planning,

deciding who will apply herbicide is another consideration.

Certain products for pastures are restricted use, meaning you will need a private applicators license to buy, so if you’re planning to apply yourself make sure your license is up to date or attend a training to get one.

Native forages can extend grazing. Indian Grass and Big Blue Stem is now seen growing on Missouri’s highway ride aways. I’ve noticed that, while other species go dormant during the hottest summer months, these natives were thriving. Putting these native forages in a part of your pastures can provide forage when fescue and other cool season grasses production has slowed during our summer months. Establishment does take a plan, so if you’re interested talk to one of Cattlemen’s Regional Grazing Coordinators or stop in at your county NRCS office.

Finally, plan to rotate your pastures. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you rotate your cattle every day, the grazing period can be adjusted based on the number of cattle and the size of the pasture. Rotating to prevent overgrazing will allow for quicker regrowth and if you have seeded legumes, it will allow them to better establish. Poly wire can be used to divide pastures, allowing for better use of forage and providing more rest for pastures and more forage for your cattle.

by Blake McDonald, Region 2 Winter is Here As of this writing, all of us in Region 2 have experienced some sort of winter weather, with a shot of snow and a cold snap to test equipment and waterers. Like most folks in the cattle business, winter wouldn’t be my favorite season, but we’re all in this together. And to think positively, spring is right around the corner!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and your year is off to a great start. As I reflect on 2025, it’s hard not to smile. While I haven’t had as many birthdays as some of our readers, I can’t think of a better year to be in the cattle business than 2025. Every class and kind of cattle commanded record-high prices last year. There’s no such thing as perfect when you’re working with Mother Nature, but aside from a few cold days and periods of either too much or too little rainfall, we had a decent weather year as well. It’s not often we see exceptional cattle prices and strong demand paired with abundant, affordable feedstuffs.

I’m not old or wise enough to offer advice, but I’ve always tried to listen to customers and consumers. I was taught that the customer is right, so whether someone is buying a bull or a burger, I try to hear their thoughts and opinions and use that feedback to improve the future. Even amid the success we’re experiencing as an industry, I believe it’s important to keep listening and continually work to make beef even better.

I remain optimistic about 2026. Most of us in Region 2 have ample feed for the winter, and demand for cattle remains consistently strong. From an inventory

BEEF CHECKOFF NEWS Beef Marketplace Update: Strong Sales and Committed Consumers

The most recent Beef Marketplace Update confirmed what Missouri families continue to demonstrate in grocery aisles and at dinner tables - they are choosing beef first. With $44.3 billion in annual beef retail sales nationally and a 12.2% increase over the previous year, beef remains the leader in the fresh meat case. In a recent four-week reporting period, beef reached $3.47 billion in sales, marking a 12.5% increase compared to the same window in 2024.

For the Missouri Beef Industry Council, this data reaffirms the priorities already guiding our mission statement. Consumers are loyal to beef. They trust it, they cook with it at home and they continue to celebrate with it on weekends and holidays. MBIC is using this information not as justification, but as direction for how we continue shaping recipe development, educational outreach, digital messaging and statewide promotions.

Ground Beef Holding the Spotlight Ground beef remains the volume driver. With $16.16 billion in annual national sales and a 17.5 % increase in the recent four-week reporting period, families continue to rely on ground beef for practicality, flexibility and affordability. It fits real weeknight schedules, freezes easily, stretches across multiple meals and works for cooks of every age and skill level.

MBIC is leaning further into these strengths. Ongoing recipe videos, weeknight meal ideas, after-school cooking content and family-centered budget meals are designed to match how households actually use ground beef. Whether it is tacos on Tuesdays, burgers on the weekends, skillet pasta for busy evenings or freezerfriendly prep, MBIC is keeping ground beef top of mind in ways that support everyday cooking.

Steaks and Special Meals Remain a Natural Pairing Premium steak cuts reached $15.56 billion in annual sales, showing that consumers still reach for beef when the meal matters. Graduation parties, tailgate Saturdays, Fourth of July cookouts, anniversaries, hometown events and quiet nights at home with the grill are still anchored by ribeyes, strips, sirloins and filets.

MBIC continues to highlight this connection between beef and celebration. Steak-focused social media features, seasonal grilling promotions, Missouri pairing spotlights, and cooking demonstrations remain central.

Consumers do not need to be convinced that steak elevates a gathering. They simply need reminders, inspiration and a few approachable preparation ideas that build comfort and confidence.

Price Consideration Is Present, Commitment Is Stronger The latest update reports beef averaging $7.14 per pound annually and $7.23 per pound in the latest reporting period. Even with this rise, more than 70 percent of adults eat beef weekly, and more than 80 percent intend to maintain or increase their current level of consumption. Among those who eat beef most regularly, more than 90 percent expect to keep consumption steady or increase it.

MBIC is addressing the price landscape with clarity and reassurance rather than avoidance. Consumer messaging now includes serving size value, multi-meal recipe sets and cost-per-serving comparison. The intent is to support families as they make thoughtful grocery decisions without sacrificing the protein they trust and enjoy.

Missouri-Focused Promotion Guided by Verified Behavior The 2025 marketplace findings give MBIC more than a snapshot of national loyalty. They offer direction for statewide communication efforts. MBIC continues to connect data with Missouri habits, retail movement, school engagement and family cooking cycles.

The data confirms what consumers already show. Beef belongs at the heart of mealtime, and the Missouri Beef Industry Council will continue to support that connection with clarity, pride and purpose.

This includes seasonal retail partnerships, cooking demonstrations that feature beef in classrooms and culinary labs, digital campaigns built around weekly meal planning and nutritional content that explains beef’s strength in iron, protein, zinc and B vitamins.

The approach is not to push beef harder, but support the reality that consumers already demonstrate: Beef.

It’s. What’s for Dinner (breakfast and lunch, too).

Continuing the Momentum The update also shows an industry operating from consistency and confidence. Ground beef continues to fill the weeknight gap. Steaks continue to mark moments worth slowing down for. Even with inflationary conditions, consumers remain steady in their commitment to beef.

MBIC’s work is ongoing. The council will continue to deepen recipe development, increase approachable cooking education, and maintain Missouri-centered messaging that reflects genuine consumer behavior. Beef is not only a staple of kitchens; it is a source of comfort, celebration and connection.

Linn County Cattlemen The Linn County Cattlemen were very active this past year. The year started with our annual banquet in February with over 350 in attendance. Later in the spring a farm safety day was held at the Cornett Center for 4th through 6th graders teaching many aspects of farm safety to be concluded with serving all beef hotdogs.

During Beef Month we purchased two cows to be donated as hamburger to the Linn County Food Pantry.

Several members of the group read to elementary classrooms in all five Linn County schools. The books read Can Do Cowkids and Levi’s Lost Calf, both by Amanda Radke. We also sponsored three 4x8 signs promoting beef to be displayed around Linn County.

At our summer meeting Dan McCurty educated us on the difference between black vultures and turkey buzzards. The group agreed to sponsor t-shirts for the Linn County Clover Kid camp. A food booth was set up at the Linn County Extreme Bull Riding event held at the end of May at the Linn County Fairgrounds.

Cattlemen scholarships were awarded to six area students in the amount of $1,750 each and six additional scholarships in the amount of $500. A Young Farmer grant was awarded in the amount of $1,000.

At the Linn County Youth Fair, the Cattlemen served 100 steaks at the Steak Feed. A cash award was given to the Champion Bred & Owned and raised heifer and the Champion Home Raised Market Steer.

There were 12 members who worked at the Beef House at the Missouri State Fair. Linn County Cattlemen sponsored two youth to attend the MCA Youth Industry Tour. They also sponsored all beef hotdogs for the FFA day held at the Cornett Farm.

At our fall roundup we had two excellent speakers, Jim Humphreys discussed confinement cattle feeding options and Dr Tonya Collup presented a program on New World Screwworm. There were approximately 30 members in attendance.

Our last item to discuss for 2025 was the election of offiers. Dallas County Winter has officially arrived in Dallas County waking up to single digit temperatures this second week of December. The Dallas County Cattlemen’s Association (DCCA) does not hold a December membership meeting, but we plan to kick off meetings again in the New Year in January.

Our board and officers always have an annual Christmas get-together in December. Spouses and family members are invited. This year we met at Southern Fried Kitchen in Buffalo. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal and great fellowship.

DCCA once again helped out Buffalo’s annual Toys for Tots in December and donated 250 pairs of socks to local children. DCCA is glad to help with this project each year as there is always such a huge need in the community for so many things.

As we wrap up the 2025 year we would like to thank our many meeting sponsors for helping us to have a successful year supporting the cattle industry. We hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas with family, and the best to all in 2026. Hopefully Santa will be good to us and continue to bless us with high cattle prices!

Newton and McDonald County Cattlemen The November meeting of the Newton and McDonald County Cattlemen was held on November 18th, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. at the Newton County Fair Grounds. Lynn Moorehead president opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Ronnie Tosh offered prayer. 110 Members and guests enjoyed a steak dinner with all the fixings. Steaks were grilled by Randy Drake, Nick Neece, Ronnie Rogers and Alan Drake. All the sides were cheese mashed potatoes, hot rolls and green beans provided by the Crowder College Aggies. Desserts were provided by members. The meeting was sponsored by Pellet Technology USA. Lynn presented thank you cards to Jenny Drake and Connie Rogers for all the work they do throughout the year with helping make the meeting run smoothly. Jenny Drake read the minutes of the previous meeting. Max Ruhl moved to approve the minutes with Nick Neece seconding. The motion passed unanimously. Jerry Davis got up and discussed the Cattlemen’s Directory and when we would start selling ads for the next one that will be printed. The Directory funds the association’s activities along with our sponsor throughout the year.

Jerry also gave the treasurer’s report noting that as of November 8 there was $11,102.36 in the bank. The treasurer’s report was approved and passed.

James Gibson got up and spoke about the two Oktoberfests that the Cattlemen’s participated in. At the Neosho Fall Festival there were two drawings for $200 each in beef. $100 was provided by Gateway Meat with the Cattlemen’s providing the other $100 and the second was $100 from Braunschweig and $100 from the Cattlemen’s. Two barbeque grills donated by New Mac Electric were also given away. There were over 600 entries for the giveaways in Neosho. The second festival was at Pineville where $100 in beef was donated by Goodman Meat Locker with the Cattlemen’s providing $100 and another barbeque grill provided by New Mac Electric. There were 384 people signed up in Pineville.

Free recipe cards provided by Beef CheckOff were also given away at both festivals and the Cattlemen’s sold hats.

Lilly Ballard, one of the Crowder students got up to talk about the field day that she attended. The Cattlemen had a field day on November 1st Sponsored by Four State Stockyards at Across Jordan Cattle Co. BJ Jordan owner spoke about what they are looking for in feeder calves. He also discussed the replacement heifers that they are feeding for a customer. Talked about the mineral supplements that they use to keep the heifers from going into heat. A meal of hamburgers and hot dogs was grilled up by Randy Drake, Jenny Drake, Alan Drake and Kelton Miller.

Sydney Thummel, Executive Director of the Missouri Beef Industry Council, attended our meeting and got up to discuss what they do to assist cattlemen. How what they do helps drive beef demand and ensure the longevity of the beef industry through promotion education and research directed toward consumers. She discussed how beef checkoff money is used in the state.

She also discussed how all time has to be accounted for in 15 minute increments to ensure that money is not wasted.

Allison Crick with the Missouri Beef Industry Council was also in attendance, and will be coming back in the new year to put on a program about Beef Quality Assurance. She will be partnering with the Newton and McDonald County Cattlemen.

Southwest Missouri Cattlemen Each year, on the first Saturday in December, the SMCA hosts a benefit auction. Trust me, it’s a fun event and one that draws in a big crowd! The evening is made possible by the hard work of our membership and the support of businesses who fund everything from decorations & monetary donations to a wide variety of auction items. We dined on ribeye steaks prepared by our grill team, delicious side dishes cooked and served

Polk County Cattlemen The Polk County Cattlemen’s Association wrapped up 2025 with its Christmas Celebration and Annual Meeting on December 11th at the Pitchfork Restaurant.

The evening brought members together to reflect on a productive year, recognize leadership and volunteers, and look ahead to 2026.

President, Ed Vest, welcomed everyone to the meeting, followed by Vice President, Jody Wing, who led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Cattleman Len Sievers offered the blessing, and guests then enjoyed a delicious meal of brisket with sides and dessert.

Past President, Bob Moreland, thanked the 2025 Board of Directors for their dedicated service. He then presented the slate of the 2026 Board of Directors to the membership, and the board was approved.

To get the evening rolling, Nikki Bartlett warmed up the crowd with a fun icebreaker. President, Ed Vest, and Communications Director, Marla Moreland, followed with a Year-End Review, featuring a video that highlighted the many events, activities, and community involvement of Polk County cattlemen throughout the year.

A favorite part of the evening was the Volunteer Drawing, presented by Volunteer Director Larry Waltz with Vice-President Jody Wing assisting. This drawing served as a special thank-you to volunteers—each time a member volunteered during the year, their name was entered into the drawing. Winners whose names were called received prizes during the celebration.

CattleCon 2026 Highlights Not To Be Missed Source: NCBA CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Dec. 15, 2025) – CattleCon 2026 is just around the corner and there are plenty of “don’t miss” events in store. The largest beef and cattle industry event of the year will be held in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, Feb. 3-5.

While CattleCon officially begins on Tuesday, Feb. 3, arrive early for the D.C. Issues Update and NCBA Regional meetings on Monday, Feb. 2. During the D.C. Issues session, NCBA Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane will share insights about NCBA’s policy work. NCBA Region meetings give cattle producers the opportunity to engage in insightful conversations regarding significant local matters that could potentially influence operations.

A new event at CattleCon 2026 is the Prime Cut Awards: Featuring the National Environmental Stewardship Award and Beef Quality Assurance Awards.

This signature event on Tuesday evening brings together cattlemen and women for a night of celebration, connection and industry pride.

The Sustainability Forum on Thursday, Feb. 5, focuses on legacy in action. The engaging discussion brings together producers and experts who have navigated — and are navigating — the challenges of succession planning and generational transfer. U.S. Pork Exports Steady in September with Value Record for Mexico; Beef Exports Lowest Since Mid-2020 Source: USMEF USDA has released red meat export data for September, which was delayed due to the recent government shutdown. As compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), September data showed a fairly steady performance for U.S. pork exports, matching year-ago value while down slightly in volume. But September beef exports were the lowest in more than five years, with shipments to China effectively halted and exports to other Asian markets also trending lower year-over-year.

“We are encouraged by the robust and resilient global demand for U.S. pork – especially in Mexico, but also in a broad range of international markets,” said USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom. “The situation is obviously much more challenging on the beef side, primarily due to the ongoing impasse with the Chinese government, which continues to ignore its commitments under the U.S.-China Phase One Agreement. U.S. industry losses continue to mount as a result of this lockout, and relief simply cannot come soon enough.”

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) is conducting a Section 301 investigation of China’s implementation of the U.S.-China Economic and Trade Agreement, popularly known as the Phase One Agreement, with a public hearing set for Tuesday, Dec. 16. USMEF submitted comments to USTR detailing China’s failure to meet its Phase One commitments on red meat trade.

September, down 2% from a year ago. Export value was steady at $683.9 million, highlighted by the highest value on record for Mexico (nearly $260 million). The value of pork muscle cut exports trended higher in September ($586.2 million, up 1%), but pork variety meat exports declined, due in part to China’s retaliatory tariffs. Excluding China, September pork and pork variety meat exports were 4% above last year.

Through the first three quarters of the year, pork exports were 3% below the record pace of 2024 in both volume (2.16 million mt) and value ($6.16 billion), and down just 1% when excluding China. Exports to leading market Mexico, which have already topped $2 billion in value in 2025, and to Central America, are poised to reach new annual highs. January-September shipments also increased year-over-year to Colombia, the Caribbean, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Few Bright Spots in a Difficult Month For U.S. Beef Exports September beef exports were just 80,835 mt, down 22% from a year ago and the lowest since June 2020. Export value was $660.9 million, also down 22% and the lowest since February 2021. Even when excluding China, beef export volume fell 11% year-over-year, due in part to lower production.

January-September beef exports totaled 856,023 mt, down 11% from a year ago (and down 4% when excluding China). Export value was down 10% to $7.03 billion. Exports trended higher to leading value market Korea and to Central and South America, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and Africa. But these gains were more than offset by the steep decline to China and lower shipments to Japan, Mexico, Canada and Taiwan.

September Lamb Exports Above Year-Ago, But Lowest of 2025 September exports of U.S. lamb muscle cuts totaled 130 mt, up 67% from last year’s low volume but the smallest in 12 months. Export value was $807,000, up 64% but also the lowest since last September. Led by growth in Mexico, the Caribbean and Canada, JanuarySeptember exports increased 47% from a year ago to 2,179 mt, valued at $11.7 million (up 31%). Exports also increased to Costa Rica and Panama.

Missouri 4-H’ers Take Top Awards at American Royal Livestock Contest Source: University of Missouri Extension KANSAS CITY, MO. – Missouri 4-H was wellrepresented at the 2025 American Royal 4-H Livestock Judging Contest on Oct. 19th. The team from Clinton County included Shanna Aughdinbaugh, Cass Kleeman, Reagan Rodgers and Dylan Swindler and was coached by Cody Sloan and Shane Bedwell. The team of four competed against individuals from 19 states, placing seventh during the awards ceremony that evening.

The highlight of the evening came when Cass Kleeman and Reagan Rodgers were named High and Reserve High Individuals Overall, respectively, said Kelsey Fuller, University of Missouri Extension state 4-H agriculture educator.

The awards were a cherry on top for the hard work and determination put in through the summer and fall, she said.

“This team certainly has put in the time and effort to deserve awards such as these and more,” Fuller said.

“We look forward to watching these four youth continue to grow and develop their skills in the years to come.”

Also taking top spots at the American Royal Livestock Judging Contest were past Missouri 4-H members Ben Brubaker, Braydon Cull, Beau Graves and Carman Woodworth. The team represented Missouri FFA in the contest.

MU Extension Expands Feedlot School Source: University of Missouri Extension COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension will host three two-day Feedlot Schools in January and February giving cattle producers a practical roadmap for retaining calves longer in Missouri and capturing more value through backgrounding and finishing.

“Missouri has the cattle base to do this, but too many calves still leave the state shortly after weaning, taking opportunity to add value to the Missouri economy with them,” says Eric Bailey, MU Extension state beef nutrition specialist.

Missouri agriculture is a major economic engine, and beef is a cornerstone of it, Bailey says. Retaining calves beyond the cow-calf stage matters because backgrounding and finishing drive additional local spending on feed, veterinary services, transportation, labor and infrastructure.

“Backgrounding is a low-hanging fruit to add value to beef calves in the current market,” he says. “We are expanding the school because producers asked

for practical training that connects the dots from weaning and receiving all the way through finishing and marketing cattle on the grid.”

For 2026, the school has been expanded to include a dedicated backgrounding session on Day 1, followed by a finishing and marketing session on Day 2.

Day 1: Backgrounding Calves The backgrounding day starts with practical facilityfocused instruction, including low-stress cattle handling and working facility design, then moves into backgrounding nutrition and management with profitfocused targets for growing calves.

The program includes a systems-based session on post-weaning calf health management that connects pen design and stocking density to enhance health outcomes. This is followed by a lunch-and-learn session highlighting MU demonstration and research projects. The afternoon closes with financing and risk management and a capstone session on building a competitive advantage by benchmarking costs and identifying where your operation can win.

Day 2: Finishing Cattle Sessions include facility design and upkeep, practical finishing nutrition and bunk management, finance and risk management, and grading and pricing fed cattle, including the dollar difference between selling live versus marketing on a carcass grid. A packer Q&A and a feedlot tour are included.

The program also reflects results from a recent MU Extension statewide needs assessment, Bailey says., Missourians said they want MU Extension to prioritize improving agricultural production and profits, training a skilled workforce for agriculture and natural resources, and developing the next generation of farmers.

Theileria Losses May Qualify for USDA Livestock Indemnity Program Source: University of Missouri Extension COLUMBIA, MO. – Beef producers who have lost cattle to Theileria orientalis may qualify for financial assistance through USDA’s Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP), says Craig Payne, University of Missouri Extension director of veterinary medicine.

The program provides payments to livestock owners when deaths exceed normal mortality due to certain weather events, predator attacks or eligible diseases.

Because Theileria orientalis is a vector-borne disease without an effective vaccine or control practice, USDA lists it as an eligible cause of loss under LIP. “If Theileria orientalis caused losses that exceed your herd’s normal mortality, LIP may help you recover a portion of your financial losses,” says Payne.

To apply, contact your local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office. The deadline to apply for losses incurred during 2025 is March 1st, 2026.

You will be asked to provide records that verify the loss.

Useful documentation includes veterinary or necropsy reports confirming Theileria orientalis, herd inventory records showing the number and class of cattle before and after the outbreak, and mortality records that show when and how many animals were lost. You will also need proof of ownership, such as calving, purchase or production records. FSA may ask for additional evidence such as photographs, sale or disposal receipts, or a veterinarian’s statement linking the deaths to Theileria.

Payments are made only for the number of livestock deaths that exceed the applicable type of livestock’s normal mortality. The amount is based on 75% of the average USDA-determined fair market value for each class of livestock. For 2025, the payment rate is $1,810.09 per adult beef cow, $2,353.12 per adult bull and $1,133.82 for non-adult cattle weighing 400-799 pounds.

Capitol Update with Nancy Giddens & Shannon Cooper What Missouri Cattlemen Need to Watch in 2026 As the Missouri General Assembly gavels into session, those of us who make a living walking the Capitol’s marble halls can already sense the tone: brisk, budgetminded, and—fortunately for the cattle industry— ready to engage on the issues that matter most to rural Missouri. This year, three priorities stand front and center for cattle producers: protecting landowners from runaway property taxes, ensuring responsibility of solar developments, and balancing the relationship between farmers and veterinarians that modern animal agriculture depends upon.

Property Taxes: Holding the Line Property taxes remain one of the most significant concerns facing Missouri’s agricultural community.

While recent reassessments and state-ordered valuation adjustments have created uncertainty and concern across many counties, agricultural producers are especially focused on protecting the stability of ag land assessments. Lawmakers know they’ll be judged by how they respond, including whether they can hold agricultural property taxes at current rates—subject to a recommendation from the State Tax Commission.

Our message to legislators is simple: cattle producers rely on stable, predictable property taxes to plan for the long term. Land is our most important asset and our biggest investment. When valuations whiplash, it jeopardizes generational planning, borrowing power, and operational stability.

Solar Farms: Balancing Opportunity and Oversight Renewable energy continues its march across rural Missouri, and with it come both challenges and opportunities for cattlemen. While solar leases can offer

Veterinarian–Farmer Relationships: Protecting Access and Practicality Finally, the issue that gets less media attention but carries huge implications for us – our veterinary relationships. At the state level, we’re working to ensure Missouri maintains practical standards that reflect realworld conditions in beef production. Healthy cattle are the heart of a sustainable beef industry, and that requires a regulatory framework built around partnership, not red tape.

As the session unfolds, MCA’s job is to ensure your voice is the one lawmakers hear first and loudest. Stay engaged, stay informed, and never underestimate the power of a call or conversation with your elected officials.
