his is the edition of Rome Life Magazine that most of our readers look forward to each year.

It’s the edition that contains the list of those people and businsses across our community who have earned your votes to be named the BEST OF ROME. The competition isn’t decided by the Rome NewsTribune. It’s decided by the people of Rome and Floyd County.

And it’s not easy to be named the Best Of. Individuals and businesses first have to be nominated. If they garner the most nominations in their respective categories, that earns them a place on the official ballot. And from there, folks all across our community vote by the thousands.

The winners and runners up of this year’s BEST OF competition are listed inside these pages. As you look through the names in each category, remember that it took thousands of votes for some of them to win, depending on how competitive their category was.

If you’re listed on these pages as having won or placed in your category, you should be proud of that achievement. It shows a committment by Rome and Floyd County residents to choose you as their favorite service, business or individual at what you do.

But while the Best Of contest dominates this particular issue, you’ll also find some cool features inside as well.

Berry professor Sandra Meek recently returned from a captivating journey to the island nation of Madagascar and shares her photo of that colorful and bountiful island, complete with lemurs and chameleons.

The Rome International Film Festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and we’ve got a great preview of this exciting event taking place in November.

RIFF always seems to bring some great films as well as a couple celebs to downtown Rome each fall.

We’ll take you back in time with some vintage photos from a Rome Christmas Parade long past.

And as with many of our editions, this one features our Social Scene pages filled with photos of YOU community residents socializing and having fun at venues and events around town. It’s a chance for you to shine.

T

he whirlwind weekend that brings films into focus in downtown Rome is almost here.

The Rome International Film Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with regional to international offerings that will run a gamut of subject matter Nov. 2 - 5.

Seth Ingram, RIFF’s creative director, has some pointers and previews for potential viewers to make the most out of the annual event that’s known for bringing notable actors, filmmakers and movies to town.

Rome and Georgia-centric films The festival’s opening night will go to films produced in Georgia. The offerings include “How to Ruin the Holidays,” a comedy focused on a family navigating challenges.

“It’s a very heartwarming, yet kind of a raunchy comedy thing,” Ingram said of the film shot in the Atlanta area.

Also showing on night one will be the horror thriller “You’re Killing Me,” shot entirely in Rome and featuring, among others, Anne Heche and Dermot Mulroney.

“That is a feature film. It’s out on Showtime now.

It’s already been released. It’s going to play on our opening night as our second feature,” Ingram said.

Daytime activities Thursday will also focus on a local slant for the film industry, although from an economic standpoint. The Georgia Unscripted roadshow will roll into town on Thursday, bringing with it speakers and networking opportunities.

“The Georgia Entertainment News has been going around from community to community hosting these, and it’s just focusing on the film industry in your area and how businesses can get involved in the film industry and existing businesses that are already there can cater to the film industry,” Ingram explained. “It’s going to be a full day of just Georgiafocused stuff on that day.”

Seth’s film picks For festivalgoers looking for recommendations on feature films, Ingram’s picks for the weekend are as follows: - “Asleep in My Palm:” Ingram said filmmakers scouted Rome for shooting of this piece but ultimately filmed it in Ohio. It’s the story of a man raising his child in a storage unit in a rural area.

“It stars Tim Blake Nelson. And his son Henry - it’s his first ever featured directorial debut,” Ingram said.

“I’m really excited to have that film” - A 40th anniversary showing of “The Outsiders:” “We’re showing a version called ‘The Complete Novel,’ which is a director’s cut that Francis Ford Coppola procured for us from Warner Brothers,” Ingram said.

- “Wonderfully Made:” This is a documentary about how the LGBTQ community addresses challenges in regard to religion. The film currently is slated to play Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5.

“This film has played around a little bit before, but the filmmaker is coming in,” Ingram said.

- “Elephant 6,” one of the pieces featured in “Through a Different Lens,” the documentary film series Berry College is sponsoring, will air at the festival. The remaining films will be available as that series continues in various community venues after the festival.

Shorts blocks The weekend will also include what Ingram called “shorts blocks,” chunks of time for short film groupings that cover certain subjects.

“We have Georgia student films, we have documentary shorts, narrative shorts, we have a big emphasis on LGBTQ,” Ingram said. “We have an Israeli filmmaker.

We have a partnership with Israel, so last year we signed an MOU (memorandum of understanding) with the country of Israel from RIFF - the first ever of its kind as a partnership - to try to foster film production between the two countries.”

Attendees can buy tickets for shorts blocks that allow them to see five or six films in a twohour period.

“For the same price as regular film, you’d be able to go in and watch all of those films. I think we have 12 different shorts blocks throughout the festival,” Ingram said.

Short films are categorized by awards genres like narrative feature, narrative short, documentary feature, documentary short, animated short and Latino focus. Locally based PAM Studios plays a key role in supporting the Latino category this year.

“For our Latino focus, PAM Studios is one of our sponsors, and her (founder Maria Guerra-Stoll’s) mission is to produce English language films for Latino audiences, so she’s working on that,” Ingram said.

Economic impact The festival brings a significant dollar influx for Rome, and Ingram said that with a little focus, that amount could grow.

“We’ve measured it as much as $500,000 of economic impact for the festival before,” Ingram said. “We have had huge crowds - especially the year we had Burt Reynolds - we had unbelievable crowds and had to move our venues …

We’re trying to showcase what the greater film industry can have an economic impact … We’re really focusing on trying to educate the community on what the creative economic impact could be if we would put a little focus on it.

Get the most out of RIFF: patrons, parties, passes The Rome International Film Festival, set for Nov. 2 through 5 this year, brings short and full-length films from far and wide to town a weekend out of each year. Attendees will benefit from an event roadmap.

“It’s a lot,” Rome International Film Festival Creative Director Seth Ingram conceded. “We start on that Thursday, Nov. 2, and we’ll go through films and events going through Sunday evening.

All-access patron passes get attendees into an array of events including the films, the workshops and panels, and the VIP parties, he explained. Attendees who want to keep it simple, Ingram said, can also simply purchase a ticket for any film at the venue where it’s showing, provided there’s availability.

“Our three venues this year are the DeSoto Theatre, the City Auditorium, and PAM Studios,” he said. “We’re making a little black box theater in there … We’ll also have additional workshop venues - the Seven Hills Room by the DeSoto, and our VIP room is going to be at Six-O-Eight Events, which is behind the Canoe House.”

Jurors made up of industry professionals and local representatives take assignments for different film categories and watch films that are up for awards. There’s an awards presentation Saturday evening after that night’s film, and anyone with an allaccess or day pass, Ingram said, can attend.

“We try to make our jury list robust with industry professionals,” he said.

Attendees can see the film schedule and purchase passes at www.riffga.com, and there’s also an app attendees can download to see the festival program.

“You’ll be able to just download the app, and everything will be right there and on your phone,” Ingram said.

RIFF 2017 featured special celebrity guest, Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Burt Reynolds who attended the festival to present a screening of “Smokey and the Bandit” as well as his latest film at the time “Dog Years.”

Christmas past These wonderful images of a Christmas long past, were posted to social media by Mike Porter.

They were taken of a Rome Christmas Parade in the 1950s by Mike’s father, William A. “Bill” Porter.

You’ll notice that at that time, the parade made its way down Broad Street in the daytime as opposed to the nighttime parades we enjoy today.

As you can see, this particular parade featured a marching band, majorettes, floats, a nativity, and even a couple of mermaids.

Notice, also, the names of businesses on the buildings along the parade route.

erry College professor Sandra Meek was supposed to travel to Madagascar in 2020.

But the pandemic had other plans.

She got the chance to visit the island nation off the southeast coast of Africa in July and spent almost three weeks immeresed in the rich culture and astounding wildlife. While there was great beauty, there was also great poverty. But Sandra said she was enriched by her journey.

With her traveling companion, her sister Linda, Sandra

found herself encountering friendly people and exotic animals.

“The culture was a fusion of East Afrian and Indonesian heritages,” said Sandra who has lived in Botswana and traveled extensively in Southern Africa but never to Madagascar.

The island is famously home to more than 100 types of lemurs, a species of primate, with long tails and supreme agility. They are found nowhere else in the world. It’s also home to the worlds smalles and the world’s largest chameleons, highly specialized Old World lizards known for their ability to change the rapidly color of their skin.

Sandra said Madagascar is full in incredible biodersity.

So with the help of local guides and and Linda explored various aspects of the country.

“When I traveled to southern Africa I’m uncomfortable doing everything by myself,” she said. “But Madagascar wasn’t that kind of trip. We worked with a travel agency that uses local guides. We were actually with a Madagascar guide the entire time. At each place they also brought in a local expert in whatever we were there to see. They were very welcoming of us.”

One of the things Sandra and her sister put a lot of thought into was about how their trip might affect the local culture and economy.

“Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world,” she said. “A year ago they experienced what’s been described as one of the first global warming droughts in the world. Since the pandemic shut down travel, the country is still recovering from that. They desperately need the money that tourism brings in. I understand the fear of not wanting to exploit people but the reality is that in Madagascar they want tourists.”

So the sisters visited a colorful but busy market in southern Madagascar where merchants were constaly trying to sell them vanilla. Sandra bought a piece of handiwork from a local woman who had designed and embroidered the piece which featured lemors and boabab trees.

One hightlight of trip was that they were treated to a private concert by local musicians playing traditional music on a rooftop in the capital.

“It reminded me of some continental subsaharan African music,” Sandra said. “They had drums, guitars and a traditional instrument almost like a violin as well as a lot of singing and dancing.”

One of the things Sandra would like other to know if they’re considering a trip to Madagascar, or another location where people are experiencing poverty, is to do plent of research beforehand.

Brookesia includes species considered to be the world’s smallest chameleons and are also among the world’s smallest reptiles.

“I think it’s really important to do the research on a place and be honest with yourself about how you’ll feel about going there,” she said. “It’s always a good thing to make sure that if you’re traveling with a group, that they’re hiring local people. And be careful with the ‘All Inclusive’ type places. They tend to be owned by foreigners and the extremely wealthy.

That’s different than patronizing small restaurants and small businesses.You want, as much as possible, to make sure your dollars are going back to the people who live there.”

Madagascar is the only place where wild lemurs can be found. This one is a ringtailed lemur at the Berenty Reserve, a private wildlife reserve in Southern Madagascar. It has been the focus of scientific research on lemurs for over 40 years.

Linda Meek with a tiny blue-nosed Boettger’s chameleon. The sister’s guide on the trip was an expert in this particular species who said it was ok to handle the animal for a quick photo.

This Sifaka appears to be dancing across the ground at the Berenty Reserve. The sifaka are distinguished from other lemurs by their vertical clinging and leaping mode of movement. They maintain a distinctly vertical posture and leap through the trees using just the strength of their back legs.

Colorful fabrics and a variety of fruits and vegetables are featured at market day.
