About Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA)

More Confidence, Better Health through Sports

Darby Parker’s Story

Sports serve as a joyful and unifying platform for individuals and communities to connect. For those with autism, participating in athletic events can be challenging due to loud, chaotic environments or feelings of exclusion. Special Olympics Georgia was established to ensure inclusivity for athletes of all ages and abilities in team sports. Children and adults with autism or other special needs can greatly benefit from joining the Special Olympics or Unified Sports, and for some, it can truly transform their lives.

A notable example is Darby Parker, a 24-year-old athlete competing in Artistic Gymnastics at the 2024 Winter Games. She began training and was able to compete at the age of eight. Darby is a graduate of Marietta High School and has also completed the Tommy Nobis Academy, an Accelerated Vocational Training Program designed to equip young adults with disabilities with essential education, training, and life skills for successful employment. The curriculum covers vital areas such as life skills, social skills for the workplace, self-advocacy, confidence-building, and communication.

Learning occurs both in the classroom and community settings. Currently, Darby works at Once Upon a Child, a business that buys and sells gently used children's clothing, shoes, toys, and baby gear, allowing families to recycle their children's items while earning money on the spot. Darby’s dedication to The Special Olympics Georgia offers numerous advantages for her and her family, including enhanced enjoyment, positive effects on her social skills, behavior, self-esteem, sports skills, and overall health. Additionally, it boosts family engagement in the community, increases awareness of available resources and services, and fosters a stronger support network.

Session begins Feb 24

Ultimately Frisbee is a dynamic and exhilarating team sport that combines elements of soccer, basketball, and American football. Played with a flying disc, the game emphasizes sportsmanship, agility, and strategy. Teams compete to score by passing the disc down the field and catching it in the opposing team's end zone. Cobb County PARKS offers a Coed Ultimate Frisbee Program during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Players aged 16 and older are invited to participate. Games will take place on Monday evenings at Terrell Mill Park.

Year of the Snake Exhibit

The Snake is the sixth animal in the Chinese Zodiac, symbolizing wisdom, intuition, and grace. Individuals born under this sign are often regarded as profound thinkers with keen intellects. The Year of the Snake recurs every 12 years, encompassing the years 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, and 2013. The upcoming Year of the Snake will be in 2025.

Additionally, the Year of the Snake is thought to create a balance between Yin and Yang energies, embodying stability and harmony. It is viewed as a fortunate year for those born under this sign and for the global community as a whole.

Furthermore, in Chinese astrology, each year corresponds to one of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The year 2025 will represent the Year of the Wood Snake, which is associated with abundance and prosperity.

We encourage you to submit your artwork for the Year of the Snake Exhibit to commemorate the upcoming Lunar New Year by December 18th. We welcome both two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces.

The community is invited to the opening reception for the Year of the Snake, taking place on January 25th from 12 PM to 2 PM. The full gallery will be showcased at The Art Station from January 8th to January 31, 2025.

Improve your Freestyle

SWIMMING TECHNIQUE

Freestyle Swimming Techniques

Exercising in the water is a fantastic, low impact way to stay active and healthy.

Freestyle swimming is performed while lying face down in a horizontal position. Like many other forms of exercise, it relies on repetitive movements. However, the key is that several repetitive actions occur simultaneously. The three most crucial components are your arms, head, and legs. Let's examine each of these elements in detail!

To engage your arms effectively, you'll be moving them in a windmill motion Start by entering the water with your arms fully extended above your head. From that position, cup your hands and push them down towards your hips to ‘pull’ the water behind you, which will help propel you forward. When your hand reaches waist level, it's time to lift it out of the water and begin the process again. Each complete rotation of your arm is referred to as a stroke. Be sure to alternate arms with each stroke For a consistent rhythm in your arm movements, your arms should be opposite each other; when one arm is at your head, the other should be at your waist.

Moving your head is a fundamental yet crucial aspect of swimming freestyle, as it allows you to breathe effectively. Interestingly, instead of lifting your head to inhale, proper breathing technique involves tilting your head from side to side. Your face should turn away from the arm that is raised above your head. For instance, if your right arm is entering the water while you breathe, you should tilt your head to the left. To establish a consistent breathing rhythm, aim to breathe every three strokes, timing your breaths as your hand enters the water.

Finally, let’s talk about your legs. They play a crucial role in keeping you balanced on the water's surface and help propel you forward. Your kick should involve quick, small movements with straight legs near the water's surface. It might feel exaggerated, but if you're splashing with your feet, you’re executing it correctly

Freestyle swimming is an excellent way to enhance your cardiovascular fitness while being gentle on your joints Plus, it effectively builds muscle in both your arms and legs!
