Recreation Coordinator I Fullers Recreation Center
In my interview for the Communications Specialist role at Cobb County PARKS, I confidently stated that, "I manifested this job, and by the end of this interview, you'll agree." What are the chances of a candidate meeting all the job requirements AND finding alignment from leadership to daily operations with the candidate's preferences?
Initially, my career ambition was to be a wellness director at a university recreation/wellness center. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Public Health from Georgia Southern University, I began my career in parks and recreation as a personal trainer/fitness program specialist. Soon after, I shifted my aspirations to planning and implementing day camps, coordinating special events, and developing promotional materials. This transition felt like a natural progression and allowed me to unleash my creative side.
In my positions as Program Specialist, Events Coordinator, and Program Supervisor, I recognized the importance of effectively marketing parks and recreation services. Implementing marketing strategies, honing communication skills, and using graphic design were crucial in ensuring the success and impact of various programs and events.
As the Communications Specialist, I capture professional photos and engage with participants at our parks, programs, and events to feature them on various platforms. This involves sharing content on social media channels such as @explorecobbparks and @cobbcountygovt, our website, and in publications like Marietta Daily Journal and Cobb Travel and Tourism. Additionally, I design and manage the production of seasonal activity guides. In essence, I narrate the stories of Parks and Rec, working closely with all levels of the department to be the collective voice of our team.
I take pride in creating and maintaining inclusive environments where everyone can find enjoyment amidst nature's beauty.
Working with the Parks Department allows me to enhance the natural areas in our communities. Parks serve as essential communal resources that promote social unity and enrich our cultural experiences.
I have dedicated eight years to the Parks Department, starting as a recreation leader/equipment operator. My responsibilities included organizing events such as fishing rodeos, bike/running races, and kids' mountain bike camps. Additionally, I contributed to constructing and upkeeping sustainable multi-use trails across the county.
The scope of my role in park maintenance is diverse, from organizing exciting events to collaborating with dedicated volunteers who play a crucial role in our projects. Currently, I serve as a maintenance crew leader supervising numerous parks like Allatoona Creek Park, Kenworth Softball/Tennis Park, O.C. Hubert Soccer Park, the county's R/C airport, Price Hall Park, and the Cobb County archery range. Over the past years, I have pursued further education by obtaining certifications as a playground safety inspector, an ISA certified arborist, and I am working towards becoming a certified parks and recreation professional. I had the privilege of presenting at the Professional Trail Building conference on the Emergency Location Markers (ELM) system, which was successfully implemented at Allatoona Park to improve response times and aid in locating individuals in need within the 1200-acre park. Engaging with children at our mountain bike camp has been a highlight for me.
Working in the Parks Department offers a unique blend of fulfillment and purpose that resonates deeply with my passion for environmental stewardship and community service.
I take pride in creating and maintaining inclusive environments where everyone can find enjoyment amidst nature's beauty.
Working with the Parks Department allows me to enhance the natural areas in our communities. Parks serve as essential communal resources that promote social unity and enrich our cultural experiences.
Our team has successfully completed numerous projects to maintain the safety, functionality, and beauty of the parks. These projects range from repairing bridges and boardwalks to ensure access to various park areas to promptly securing walls in emergencies so that events can continue until proper repairs are carried out. Some of our notable projects include rebuilding a bridge at Wallace Park, repairing a boardwalk on the Bob Callan Trail, and conducting emergency repairs at the Cobb County Civic Center after a car incident in the lobby.
My background in Glasswork, Carpentry, Plumbing, and Electrical work has equipped me with the necessary skills to learn from seasoned professionals and excel in my current role. My ultimate career aspiration is to never cease learning, and Cobb County Parks continues to provide opportunities to achieve this goal.
I currently work as a Recreation Coordinator I for Fullers Recreation Center. I obtained my Bachelors of Science degree in Sports Management from Kennesaw State University. Upon graduating with my degree, I started my career in sports working for professional sport teams in Atlanta. With a devotion and heart to give back to others through my career, I began working with various non-profit organizations throughout Atlanta where I planned, developed, evaluated, and overseen implementation of arts, physical education and specialty programs that prepare youth for success.
In my current role as Recreation Coordinator I, I have the pleasure of planning, coordinating, and implementing recreational classes, programs, camps, special events, and activities for both youth and adults in the East Cobb-Marietta community. My role also provides me with the opportunity to participate with the planning and implementation of seasonal and celebratory county-wide events. What I enjoy most in my position, is my freedom to express my creativity and share my ideas through programs and activities. I take pride in visualizing an idea and turning it into a reality. It is fulfilling to work with youth and provide them with fun, engaging, and impactful experiences. My future goals are to continue to deliver successful and optimal experiences for a growing community. “With the best tools I have -- my heart and my camera- I have been documenting the contributions that so many immigrants -- come here from all over the world- are making every single day, for the good of our country, the good of our people. The deeper I got into the work, the more clearly I saw the truth, a truth that is often hidden from our eyes: without the help of immigrants, our country might not be able to survive. Our land, our food, our economy, our schools and hospitals, even our cutting edge science and technology -- in every sector of American life, immigrants provide us with essential manpower and expertise, and they bring us a special spirit too, the spirit of people come here to start fresh, to build their dreams and raise their children in our cherished and of liberty.
In my eyes now, awakened as I am, what I see is plain as day: Together We Rise. Or, Divided We Fall.
“Wherever I go, I find people with incredible compassion and dignity, and through my art I want to convey the message that we are all inter-related, we are all in this together.”

As a visual artist with an advanced degree in visual art, I often find myself grappling with the challenge of creating new work. The landscape of adult athletic leagues within parks and recreation has experienced a remarkable evolution over the years. There has been a notable shift, marked by the rise of social leagues, church leagues, a diverse array of new sports and a change in the culture of adult sports. The competition for participation has ushered in a new era for parks and recreation departments. As citizens seek alternative options for their recreation needs, departments are facing the challenge of adapting to these dynamic changes.
Cobb County PARKS stands out as a prime example of adaptation and innovation in response to the changing preferences and demands. They recognized the evolving nature of adult athletic leagues and not only adapted, but thrived, in response to the diverse interest of its citizens.
Cobb County PARKS serves more than 775,000 citizens and recognizes that recreational interests span all types and seasons. To accommodate this demand, Cobb’s league offerings have grown exponentially over the years. In 2016, Cobb PARKS adult athletics division ran three sports adult basketball, flag football and softball Today, the league landscape has expanded offering a total of 10 sports. The additions include adult kickball, cornhole, Spikeball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, pickleball and golf, with plans to introduce soccer in the upcoming year. Cobb PARKS now runs more than 100 leagues annually, boasting a total of more than 700 teams. Leagues are offered in the spring, summer, fall and winter, providing year-round opportunities for residents to engage in their favorite sports.
This expansion mirrors a broader trend in adult recreation, where non-traditional sports have gained popularity for their social and inclusive appeal. The inclusion of sports like pickleball, kickball and cornhole reflects a growing trend towards recreational activities that emphasize social interaction and enjoyment These non-traditional sports provide an alternative for individuals seeking a break from the routine and a chance to engage in playful competition.
Acknowledging the changing dynamics and the desire for alternative options, Cobb PARKS introduced individual registration alongside team registration in 2018 While team registration has been a staple, the introduction of individual registration has been a game-changer. Individual registration has allowed more than 500 registrants to join the league each year that would have normally missed out on the opportunity to play, creating more than 60 additional teams annually. Not only does this allow everyone the ability to play but it generates more teams for each league The additional individual teams have been an important factor contributing to the continued growth and reach of the adult athletics division with many teams returning for future seasons. This move addressed the consistent demand from individuals who yearned to participate but lacked the numbers to form a complete team Whether new to the area or groups of friends looking to join without a complete roster, individuals could now sign up for an opportunity to engage in recreational activities that were once unavailable to them.
The birth of the ultimate frisbee league in 2018 stemmed from the observation of a group regularly playing in the park Staff approached them about forming an official league and after thorough research and collaboration, the ultimate frisbee league was successfully created later that year. In the realm of recreational sports, where tradition often reigns supreme, Cobb County PARKS has carved a niche for itself with the introduction of non-traditional sport leagues One that stands out is their adult Spikeball league. Since its inception in 2019, this league has not only become a standout feature in their league lineup but has also marked itself as one of the few, if not the only one, offered by a parks and recreation department in the entire country.
While the growth of Cobb County PARKS leagues has undoubtedly been positive, the creation of new leagues requires careful consideration of various factors. Essential to the success of any league is garnering support from both the community and your department. The backing of these key stakeholders ensures a solid foundation for the league to thrive Moreover, budget considerations are crucial in determining the feasibility of introducing a new league, as costs associated with equipment, officials, facilities and staff support must align with available resources. Additionally, determining an affordable cost structure for the leagues is crucial, requiring an analysis of operating costs and expenses Striking the right balance ensures that participation fees remain accessible to a broad range of community members while still covering the necessary expenditures.
Having a dedicated and capable staff to manage the logistics, organize events and support the league’s growth is equally vital Notably, the introduction of non-traditional leagues like cornhole, ultimate frisbee, Spikeball and pickleball has proven beneficial, as these sports often involve self-officiation, relieving pressure on the operating budget while maintaining a positive and engaging recreational experience for participants. This thoughtful approach ensures that new leagues not only meet the diverse interests of the community but also operate sustainably within the available resources.
Cobb County PARKS has truly become a hub for diverse athletic pursuits and stands at the forefront of the evolving nature of adult athletic leagues, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity, responsiveness to community interests and a proactive approach to diversifying recreational opportunities. As the landscape continues to evolve, Cobb PARKS remains steadfast in its mission to make recreational opportunities affordable, accessible, enjoyable and enriching for all.
