Fence is mended!

Mail thefts stop after arrests

R

eports of mail thefts in Coatesville and the surrounding area have virtually stopped since Police made two arrests in August. The offenders have already appeared in court on charges of mail theft. One was remanded in custody to appear in court again in October and the other was remanded on bail to appear in court in September. Both will face further fraud-related charges. Waitemata North Area Commander Inspector Mark Fergus says most of the reports Police have received from the Coatesville area since the arrests have come from people trying to establish whether or not they have been affected by mail theft. The issue for many is that they simply don't know what was taken. However, Inspector Fergus says the offenders were mostly targeting bank cards and courier packages. "Some banks require you to activate bank cards online before they can be used but others send them already activated," he says.

It appears the thieves were looking for cards from banks that they knew were activated so they could use them to make purchases using Paywave. Police are now working with NZ Post to return the items of mail they have uncovered to their rightful owners. "People who have had items of value taken and where they have missed deadlines as a result of not receiving their mail, will be sent a letter to assist with insurance claims," he says. In spite of the arrests, Police investigations are ongoing as there may be other offenders associated with the crime which has been reported in other areas of Auckland. The Police advise residents in rural areas like Coatesville to clear letterboxes daily, lock them overnight wherever possible and either collect bank cards from the bank or ensure that Paywave is disabled on cards that are sent in the mail. Copies of the letter to assist with insurance claims are available from local Police stations.

Kumeu-based TreescapeÂŽ has mended the post and rail fence at the Coatesville Reserve that was damaged in January when a chipper went through it. Business Manager Bryson Middleton says the delay occurred because all three fencing contractors engaged to do the repair struggled to source the distinctive rounded posts needed for the job. The right materials were eventually found though, and the fence is looking great again. "It's been an unfortunate event, but we're grateful that no one was injured at the time it happened," says Bryson.
