oatesville Primary School invites the community to come along and enjoy our annual Ag Day. Come early − 9am to see the animal judging, or later − from 10.30am for food, games and market stalls. We have games and rides galore, including a bouncy castle and water-walkers.

Stalls include fresh produce, a silent auction, face painting, food stalls, the amazing recycle clothes boutique and second-hand books. Would you like to be involved in our Ag Day? Have you got too many jars of homemade marmalade? Gone crazy making chutney?

We would love any community contributions towards our co-op stall. This may include jams, marmalade, cakes, fresh produce or any other local delicacies. We would also love good quality clothes, books, and puzzles (need to be complete) to sell on the day. These can all be dropped off at the school office during school hours from now. Any perishable goods can be donated to school on Friday, 18 October. All contributions are gratefully received.

A

s this issue's cover tells you, the main event for October is Coatesville School's Ag Day on Saturday, 19 October. This annual extravaganza is one of the things I loved the most about our school when our son attended. In Coatesville, we live so close to the city (when you strike the traffic right) yet we get to enjoy the richness of being part of a semi-rural environment. We're lucky to have the best of both worlds. Our family still has one of our Ag Day lambs and she's remained a pet for six years thanks mostly to a bond fuelled by universal feed pellets.

This month I visited Lollipops Educare to take the photo on page 3 of the children in the tie-dyed T-shirts they made for Loud Shirt Day. These kids are very young and it's lovely to see them wearing something they've made and feel proud of. Well done to them and the teachers who helped them through the process and for supporting such a worthy cause.

On page 4 you'll find a story about local man Gary Langridge who has used his spare time since retirement to help eradicate pest animals in Coatesville's native bush. Gary is a bit of an accidental hero. Although he never intended to be high profile, his energy and persuasive powers have made him into a Pied Piper of sorts

and got him nominated for a Mayoral Conservation Award.

This month I visited some of Coatesville's finest gardens to photograph and write about the people behind the botanical masterpieces. You can read what they love best about their gardens on pages 6 and 7. Next month, their properties will open their gates for Albany Rotary's Coatesville Garden Ramble. Don't miss your chance to wander through the grounds and experience them for yourself while helping to raise money for charity.

In September, Maori Language Week gave us all a chance to try out some te reo. I realised one of the simple and important phrases lacking from my vocabulary was how to say thank you in Maori. A quick Google search revealed that kia mihi is thank you. So, to everyone who I spoke to photographed or wrote about for this issue, kia mihi.

Loud Shirt Day at Lollipops Educare

Local restaurateurs Banu and Sulo Kaynarcali − the couple behind Black Cottage − have expanded their operation with a new café in Hobsonville called Midpoint.

The new café opened in July and has been busy ever since. If you're over that way and in need of refreshments, make it a point to visit Midpoint: 102C Hobsonville Road. The children at Lollipops Coatesville on Glenmore Road took on an adventurous project to support a good cause. They celebrated Loud Shirt Day by making their very own loud shirts, using the fun tie dye technique.

Teachers and children, who range from 9 months to 5 years, worked collaboratively to create some wonderful and very loud T-shirts. Teacher Kayla, took time to organise t-shirts and did a wonderful job to make sure that the T-shirt making process went smoothly.

Loud Shirt Day was officially celebrated at Lollipops Coatesville on Monday, 30 September, and teacher Rae (who organised the day for the centre) says, “We chose to celebrate Loud Shirt Day because it's a yearly fundraiser for the Hearing House and Southern Cochlear Implant Programme to support deaf children in New Zealand. We as a centre, are wanting to give back to our wider community.“

Congratulations to Lauren Hobson and Jared Gibbs who welcomed baby Cooper Leo Gibbs into the world on 25 September at 5.53am.

Cooper is a strapping little chap, he weighed 4.2kg (9lb 4oz) on arrival and was and 54cm in length.

The couple say: "We're abosolutely over the moon and completely filled with love for our wee man."

oatesville local Gary Langridge was a finalist in the Mayoral Conservation Awards based on his work to rid animal Ever had mess predators from 90 hectares of land near his home.

He turned his attention to tackling the problem of animal predators and put his persuasive powers to work. Soon Gary had engaged his neighbours to join him and together the group of seven Hartway Drive property owners formed the NoPredator mess, Free no dodgy products Sunnyside Trust (SPFT).

"Before we could lay traps or poison, we needed to understand where the predators were and in what concentrations," says Gary.

The SPFT applied to the Department of Conservation but were turned down so they approached Auckland Council for support. Restoration Advisor Hana Aickin was appointed to work with them, and their project went to the next level. Hana's role is to work with community conservation initiatives, and she provided technical support to establish monitoring lines through the native bush. She also created the Animal Pest Plan which acts like a roadmap for the group of what to do and when to do it.

First, chew cards were placed along monitoring lines through the native bush. These polystyrene cards are baited with a lure that attracts animals to bite the cards. The bite marks and number of bites identifies the animals and indicates how many are living in that area. Traps and baits were then installed along the lines.

Gary says most of the people in the SPFT are now actively involved in monitoring traps and bait stations and they've seen some early results. "We haven't seen any skinless lemons on our trees for a while," he says. "And it's early days but we're pretty sure we're seeing more native birds."

Hana nominated Gary for the Mayoral Conservation Award because, as she says, "Gary is a go-getter. He didn't have 1 experience but that didn't stop him from pulling together the people who live in Hartway Grove. His attitude and energy have made him a community champion. These are the people the council really wants to support."

The SPFT will be at Mincher Garden during the Coatesville Garden Ramble on 10 November. Gary invites everyone to stop by and check out the equipment and methods they're using to help restore the native bush in Coatesville to being predator free by 2050.

Seasonal crime is on the rise

ith the changing of seasons our local criminal fraternity look for new opportunities to exploit.

People become relaxed about shutting windows and securing property as the sun comes out and holiday mode takes over. It’s important to remember that although most of our local thieves aren’t criminal masterminds, they are opportunists who take easy pickings when presented to them.

So once again I will remind you of a few simple prevention methods that will help keep you from becoming a victim.

As the weather warms up and doors and window are left open to allow the breeze to flow, ensure that windows have security stays.

Don’t leave keys, wallets and handbags near partially open windows or by the front door. If you are going to leave doors open, have a screen door fitted.

It’s also that time of the year that the neglected garden starts to get some attention. Please don’t leave the garage door open while you weed the back garden oblivious to the person riding off on your new electric bike.

High street shopping chains are now offering very competitive prices on CCTV and use of these systems has become much easier for those of us that struggle with technology. You can now go on holiday and keep an eye on the house via your mobile phone.

The CCTV gives you peace of mind and acts as a deterrent for any would-be burglars.

Lastly, remember to secure the boat with a good quality lock on the towing eye and clamp on the wheel. Don’t load the boat with the rods and other expensive goods until you are ready to go. Too many people have come out to the boat in the morning to find that somebody helped themselves to the life jackets etc overnight.

Finally, have good sensor lights fitted about your property, and keep a clear line of vision to sheds, boats, campervans etc so you can keep an eye on them.

Make sure that you are the person enjoying your gear this summer.

Guy Fawkes Night is on Thursday, 5 November, and if you're planning to let off fireworks, please think of those around you.

Meet Coatesville's generous gardeners The Albany Rotary Club's Coatesville Garden Ramble 2019 takes place next month and these are the people behind the stunning gardens. Here they share what they love most about their gardens so visitors will know what to look for.

Bruce and Angela Spooner, Mincher Garden Mincher is a large rural garden in the heart of Coatesville.

The Georgian-style home is surrounded by formal planting of a parterre with long borders that lead to cottage gardens and expansive grassed areas, which in turn open up into the gardener’s cottage and walled kitchen garden. Spring plantings of rhododendrons, camellias, bluebells, and daffodils complement the backdrop of the bushwalk and podocarp forest to the north together with waterways and ponds. "Our favorite place in spring is the cottage gardens with mass plantings of tulips and the perfumed blossom of the fruit trees," says Angela.

Margaretha Graham, A La Fois Garden Step onto the driveway at A La Fois Garden and the southern hemisphere aesthetic surrounds you. Margaretha Graham and her late husband Terry have created one of Coatesville's most distinctive gardens with subtropical and Australian natives combined with garden art alongside native New Zealand bush. The meticulously maintained environment is breathtaking. It's hard to believe that back in 1999 when the Grahams purchased the six-acre site, it was farmland.

Margaretha enjoys the garden every day and says her favourite plant is grevillea poorinda royal mantle shown beside her. "It provides amazing groundcover, takes almost no maintenance and the bees just love it," she says. Visitors will find it on the left of the steps that descend to the pond.

Amanda Malbon, John Gavin and Selena Yang Twin Lakes At first glance the lakes are this property's stand-out feature.

They occupy around five acres and provide a habitat for many plant, fish and bird species. But Twin Lakes also has more than seven acres of gardens. These include; a classical rose garden with statues and pergolas; plantings of conifers; an aviary, which houses an impressive array of rare exotic birds, and the stunning views across the water back to the house. The trio on the left maintain the impressive Twin Lakes property and care for its many animals. They describe is as being like a theme park but without the rides.

Sabrina Feng and Jeffrey Zhu, Natural Garden A little over two years ago, Sabrina Feng was house hunting in Auckland. Back then, Coatesville wasn't on her radar but when she saw the Screen Road property now named Natural Garden, she was hooked. Sabrina lives with her family including son Jeffrey Zhu (shown left) and describes her garden as being in the English style. In spite of that she's been surprised to find a number of well-known Asian plants, like sugar cane in amongst the plantings. Each morning Sabrina enjoys wandering through the garden with a cup of coffee and says her favourite garden feature is the birdlife.

This English-style garden under the trees with its colonial buildings is one of Coatesville's most picturesque properties.

The five-acre garden was laid out by landscape designer Lesley Maughan for owner Roy Richardson and she divided it into colour-themed rooms which entice the visitor to explore further. Although some of the garden is visible from the road, the pond with its bridge, outbuilings and arbour are on the other side of the house. “I like that the garden reveals itself as you walk around, says Roy. "One of my favourite things is how the garden and the buildings work together."

Roy's partner Margaret Wallace says her favourite element in the garden is the arbour, a fairytale iron structure that hosts a climbing banksia rose.

Adrienne Fisher and Rollie Wards, Bumkin Garden A shared passion for gardening attracted Adrienne and Rollie to their 10-acre block of land in 1989. Previously part of a dairy farm, the devoted gardeners have lovingly transformed it over 30 years into an English-style garden which occupies roughly three acres of their property. Rollie says they named it Bumkin Garden because of the rural setting and their love of the simple life which includes his interest in vintage tractors.

Their favourite place in the garden is looking out over the large pond which visitors will find down the stone steps in front of the house. By 10 November, Adrienne expects the water lilies to be flowering and says, "There will be leaves on the trees and probably some rambling roses blooming too."

Do it yourself or call in the experts?

W

e've all been there, you take a walk around your property after a storm and find that a tree has blown down. If it hasn't caused too much damage, you might be able to use it for firewood as long as you have a chainsaw, the know-how and, most importantly, the safety gear.

A1 Sure Services are experts in tree work and have provided tree services to commercial and residential property clients across Auckland for almost 20 years. The advice below is from Fergus Vere, a level-5 qualified arborist on the A1 Sure Services team. His answers will help you decide whether or not to strap on your chaps and fire up the chainsaw, or pick up the phone and call in the experts the next time you come across a tree down at your place.

What are the first things to consider when eyeing up a tree that's come down?

Check to see if it has landed on or affected any services.

Check for property damage and if it has fallen on anything.

If it has, then call us.

How big is too big to tackle with a standard chainsaw?

Anything over 18 inches, or if your farm boss can’t do the job, then call us.

When do you start?

Trees are easier to cut when green. Trees are harder to cut when the wood is dead, so cut and split straight away.

If the tree has been lying around for a year or more, can you still chainsaw it into rings for firewood.

You can but the job will be harder and you will need to be good at sharpening a chainsaw.

What are the steps in the process?

Delimb your branches first and when getting to the lower branches, check the tension and compression of the weight of the log upon the lower branches if there is weight on the branches, then you may need help from an arborist.

What safety gear do you need to wear when doing a job like this?

When using a chainsaw to cut through a tree trunk, what should you keep in mind?

Never use the top of the chainsaw to cut into the log. The top of the chainsaw is the most dangerous part of the saw (watch out for kickback!) Always keep the bottom of the saw against the log.

What's the standard ring size and how do you keep your measurement consistent?

The standard ring size is 30cm (12") easily gauged with the keen eye of an experienced arborist or you can use the width of your saw as a guide for cutting size.

Are there some trees a lifestyle block owner should never try to tackle Anything over 18” or over you should call in a professional.

How do you know if something is outside your chainsaw's ability and when should you get an arborist rather than having a go yourself?

When the log is too wide for the bar you are using to cut it, or if your saw is jamming up while making cuts, or if there are any limbs or log with weight in them, call us!

A Twlight Zone of Internet Investment

O

ne of the issues most commonly brought to me by residents of Coatesville and Dairy Flat is the lack of reliable, fast internet connectivity in the area.

The issue had been brought to my attention before the 2017 election, in fact, so I made it a priority to get underway advocating in this space once elected as your local Member of Parliament.

Initially I wrote a letter to the Minister of Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media to highlight the implications of poor internet coverage, noting comments she had made about the importance of rural communities being connected online.

The main challenge for Coatesville is that it’s deemed not sufficiently densely populated to justify ultra-fast broadband (UFB) investment, on the one hand, but not sufficiently remote and rural to justify inclusion in the latest tranche of the Rural Broadband Initiative or Mobile Blackspot Fund (RBI2/MBSF). You’re within a twilight zone of internet investment, in other words.

I’ve been advocating for a change to the investment criteria to address this problem. My argument has been that the government should take into account features of Coatesville that are relevant to the need for better internet, such as the high proportion of home-based businesses in the area, close proximity to Auckland and

transport-related difficulties.

Outside the existing government funding, the deployment of broadband networks are commercial decisions on the part of private companies.

I’m currently planning a meeting that the Coatesville community will be welcome to attend. My office has been liaising with Crown Infrastructure Partners and Chorus, asking them to provide some clarification about the next steps for rolling out internet infrastructure for Coatesville and Dairy Flat. This will be an opportunity to hear from them first-hand, together with invited locals (for example, the Coatesville Residents and Ratepayers Association and Louise Johnston of the Rodney Local Board as she’s also been a strong advocate) and I look forward to meeting many of you.

I’ll also be at the Coatesville Market on Sunday, 6 October, so please stop by and say hi!

CRRA UPDATE

Communication: We are keen to push our Facebook page so look out for upcoming posts and contact us if you have ideas/ projects etc to share.

Fibre: Louise Johnston is working with Iain and Samantha to push this initiative harder.

Area Enhancements: Val and Lynn are pushing for less waste in curbs and plastic-free home waste.

Transport: We are pushing hard to get a safe pedestrian crossing installed in front of the dairy, however lack of funding may delay this project. We are also pushing to have the council look at covering over the deep culverts that surround the reserve to create more parking space.

Greenways: Neil is working with Louise in the background to see if we can secure inclusion of the Sunnyside reserve area in this amazing plan. As more progress is made, we will let you know.

O

ne of the ongoing criticisms of Auckland's Unitary Plan is that much of Auckland's elite soils (i.e. Pukekohe) are zoned as future urban. Central government have now released a proposed National Policy Statement for highly productive soils and this may impact future land uses for Coatesville.

"The National Policy Statement introduces a clear and consistent policy that councils must follow when making decisions on land use. This statement proposes that councils be required to ensure there's enough considered prime soil and therefore highly productive land available maybe covered by this new proposed for primary production now and National Policy Statement. Q. How far in advance does the professional photographer need to be booked?

A. 5−10 days in advance for the top photographers, and if it rains or is too dull on the day, the photos will be postponed.

This could be as close to 30 minutes beforehand as Auckland weather can be very changeable. Your property will be given priority for the re-shoot.

Q. What media deadlines need to be met?

A. Your print adverts need to be booked between 7−10 days before the publication date. There are often restrictive templates and parameters to work within. Allow time to work with your agent to ensure that the property, photos and words are the best they can be.
