othing says Halloween like spotting a witch, the Grim Reaper, a devil, Curious George, an Angry Bird and Buzz Lightyear in your neighbourhood, not to mention a spaniel wearing a mask. Dressing up proved excellent fun for Coatesville's Cubs, and this group of 10, including two parents and a dog, attended the trick or treat event held in Riverhead on Tuesday, 31 October. After arriving at the Riverhead tennis courts, the Cubs were handed a map showing the Halloween-friendly addresses in Riverhead that were happy to receive trick-or-treaters. Coatesville Cub Leader Jacky McCoy says the kids scarpered at top speed to start knocking on doors. Jacky says that although the group enjoyed the whole event, there was one particular highlight. "The kids really loved the haunted house on Great North Road where a man was dressed as Frankenstein and measured their arms," she says. Naturally, the resourceful Coatesville Cubs had a trick up their sleeves if they needed it. Rumour has it they were going to wrap up letterboxes and trees in toilet paper if they had to, but since no one asked, their night was all about treats!

Those that have lived here in Coatesville for some years will have seen that New Zealand’s most undesirable weed, gorse, has been making a comeback. And we know how it flourishes, first one small seedling...then, you guessed it, a field full of the damned weed. Gorse, New Zealand’s worst scrub weed, was originally introduced here as a hedge species, but now occupies large areas of countryside, reducing the area available for grazing by livestock on pasture land. Gorse does so well in NZ that it flowers twice a year, unlike its home environs in Europe. If you own a parcel of land and can see gorse, please can you start the process of eradication. To the land owners that are already controlling gorse and other weed species, a very big thank you from your neighbours and fellow locals. If there are any large patches of gorse on rural road sides bordering your land, then contact Auckland Transport either by accessing “Contact us” on their website or ring 301 0101 to report it. If there is just the occasional plant on the roadside outside your property could you kindly deal with it. Let’s give gorse the heave-ho. And while you're at it, hit those woolly nightshade, privet, blackberry, convolvulus and arum lilies as well. There are many alternative/organic ways to get rid of gorse that you can Google or visit RD1, Falloons or Wrightson for advice. Mary Logan

The exact opening date is not yet known as the pool will be re-painted prior to opening and this is weather dependent. Any updates will be posted on the pool gate and the school’s website. I am writing on behalf of the Coatesville Country Garden Club on the matter raised by Owen Aspden in the September edition of the Coatesville Chronicle on pest plants in Coatesville. The club fully supports Owen’s concerns over the volume of pest plants on our local roadsides and the need for initiating an eradication program. As Owen suggested, it is unlikely the Auckland Transport will lead the charge on eradicating the plethora of pest plants and it will be up to the land owner to be proactive in dealing with their road frontages. The Garden Club has also requested that the CRRA take

Peter Howard Doherty passed away on 11 October after an illness. Peter was well known in the community having lived here for 30 years with his wife Judy. Semi-retired, he worked locally on the Rural Delivery postie run and was a real people person who loved the social aspect of this job. Peter was also an active volunteer with on Tiri Tiri Matangi where he helped with bird counts. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Crossfit champion
My name is Debbie Downing, I’m a local Personal Trainer and gym owner. I have recently returned from competing at the World CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. This was the fourth time I have qualified for the World CrossFit Games (once in a team and three times as an individual) and my third time competing at the Games. It’s a lengthy process just qualifying for the Games. In my age group alone there were 3,500 women from around the world who signed up for five weeks of competition (one workout per week for five weeks). At this stage I was lying in 15th place and moved to a second stage of qualifying (only the world's top 200 get to advance). I completed this in 11th place, earning a spot to compete at the World CrossFit Games where only 20 athletes worldwide in each division advance to.
The Games were held from 3-6 August and this was an incredibly humbling experience. With CrossFit you never know what workouts you may have to do. For the first time a biathlon was included, run-swim-run. We also had to complete an obstacle course, heavy weightlifting, pull ups, handstand push ups, rope climbs, a running squat and burpee event whilst wearing a 14lb weighted vest, to name a few. At the conclusion of the demanding four-day competition I ended up in 9th position. This was an incredible result competing alongside an incredibly talented group of athletes from all over the world. Hall Society holds its first AGM
The first year of the new society set up to oversee and manage the hall and to continue the role of Reserve Advisory Committee to Auckland Council has been very much a year of “business as usual”. It took a little longer than expected to get the licence from the Council which meant that the licence was not signed until the first AGM on 26 October 2017. After settling with Council for the funds we had managed prior to signing, we have arrived at a financial position for our first year of operation with a reasonable surplus of $5,863.59. Auckland Council have been particularly generous with their support of improvements on the reserve outside the Pony Club leased area as we continue to maintain, develop and protect the environment. We are naturally finding ourselves increasingly under pressure from Council to ensure that all health and safety matters are addressed in accordance with their rules. They are separately talking with Pony Club about their responsibilities on the leased area. The regular users of the reserve, Pony Club, Scouts, Coatesville School, Coatesville Market, and Coatesville Garden Club are all contributing to our outstanding facilities. The hall continues to be available at no cost to local community organisations although they have all had to realise that given the popularity of the hall for hire, they need to book well in advance to secure their preferred dates. I should like to acknowledge with particular thanks the contribution of our committee over the first twelve months of our operations, especially Owen Aspden and Owen Sprosen for their work on the reserve. In this regard a very special thanks to the Coatesville Garden Club who have put in a considerable amount of time, especially in our developing Wildwood. Ride for Road Safety Life-long horse enthusiast Simone Frewin is leading a national campaign to improve the safety of riders and their horses on our roads. And, on 19 November, 200 riders are expected to take part in the Dairy Flat Ride for Road Safety. "I have been hit by cars while riding south Auckland and west Auckland roads. The first time, as a child, my horse survived with many stitches and wrote off the car. The second time, it was only the wing mirror that was ripped off the vehicle when it caught my stirrup iron as the car went past. But I have had many close calls in my 40 years of road riding. As urban sprawl takes over rural areas, altercations between road users are becoming more prevalent. Most city drivers have no idea how to behave around horse traffic and don’t know the law. The Road Code is also very ambiguous when it comes to horse traffic; ‘Pass wide and slow’ is extremely subjective. If you’re travelling 100km/hr, see a horse and slow to 70km/hr, you’ll feel that you’ve slowed significantly, but if you hit a horse and rider at that speed, they’re going to be seriously injured. Many drivers just aren’t aware how easily even the quietest, most sensible of horses can be startled. Many drivers also don't understand the hand signals used by riders to indicate their intent or when they’re in difficulty. I want to educate all road users, including horse riders, regarding their responsibilities around horse traffic on roads. We all have equal
right to use NZ roads so we need to learn a bit of empathy for each other and keep each other safe. The Dairy Flat Ride for Road Safety is set to be the largest ride in the country with around 200 horses and riders expected. We’re very fortunate to have the support of Waste Management who have opened their Redvale property for our use and are very generous hosts of the event. We’ll be riding along Richards Rd (off Dairy Flat Highway) which is a quiet, deadend road. We’ll then track from there off onto paper roads and Waste Management’s private property. The scenic ride starts at 10am and is approx. 7 kms, is very safe and is suitable for children to attend. We also welcome walkers who would like to participate and show their support."
How to get involved
All participants must pre-register before the day. This can either be done on the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ rideforroadsafety/ or by contacting Karen Rutherford (the Dairy Flat RFRS Ride Coordinator) by email at ride4roadsafety@gmail.com or by phone 027 279 5930. All participants (riders and walkers) must wear high-vis clothing for the ride.
Safer road use
All road users must take care when approaching a horse and rider – even cyclists and pedestrians. Drivers: ∞ Slow down to 20km/hr ∞ Keep a distance of 2 metres between your vehicle and the horse and rider. ∞ Obey rider hand signals. ∞ Don't pass a horse on a bridge or when an oncoming car is approaching. ∞ Don't pass a car that is passing a horse. ∞ Pass a horse and rider the same way you would pass a 2-year-old child that’s just run out on the footpath unsupervised. ∞ Don't make loud sounds or rev your engine. Cyclists: ∞ Slow down and talk as you approach a horse. Horses can’t see or hear you coming and can be dangerous when caught by surprise. Pedestrians: ∞ Please keep your dog on-leash and under control. Riders: ∞ Wear hi-vis clothing and an approved hard hat. ∞ Don’t ride on footpaths or nicely mown berms. ∞ Only ride two abreast if you’re leading another horse or shielding a horse from traffic. ∞ Carry a cellphone but don’t use it while mounted. ∞ In a residential area, pick up horse poo where it's safe to do so or go back later to remove it. ∞ Wave and be courteous to considerate drivers.

Local Board & CRRA Update

ingers crossed we are gearing up for a good summer and with the warmer weather approaching it is great to see so many runners, walkers, cyclists and horse riders out and about. Hopefully one day they will be able use our Greenways Paths. For this annual budget, the Local Board have allocated funding for a Greenways Plan for Coatesville and Dairy Flat. At the last Coatesville Resident and Ratepayers meeting we were very lucky to have my fellow Local Board member, Allison Roe, attend. She has been an integral part in the development of the Greenways Plan from Puhoi to Pakiri and in the building of pathways from Omaha to Point Wells and Matakana. In Allison’s experience the Puhoi to Pakiri Greenways planning was successful because local residents had a clear idea of where the pathways should go before any public consultation began. The planning of the Greenways paths for Coatesville and Dairy Flat area is being outsourced by Council to the private company, Path. Path will firstly engage with internal stakeholders and Iwi (i.e. Council Planners, Auckland Transport, Local Board) and review any previous plans before the engaging with interest groups such as the resident and ratepayers, and Pony Clubs. Once draft plans are drawn up, public consultation will begin. Possible venues for the public consultation will be the Coatesville Reserve or outside the Coatesville Dairy. This will hopefully happen before Christmas. If you are thinking about where the pathways should go in Coatesville, one great place to
CRRA: Fitness Station Update
We are using a company called Playco who are a very reputable company and have previously installed fitness stations and playgrounds throughout the surrounding areas. They have worked with council so know the rules and regulations. The CRRA have raised all the money through various donations for the fitness station and have had the position agreed by the council, hall and reserve committee and ratepayers committee. We are currently working with council in relation to them funding the safety matting and area below the fitness station. Initially this was agreed but since been retracted. We hope to have a resolution within the next month.

We are very lucky to have this on our doorstep. I have asked Council on behalf of local residents if they are able to use the Green Road farm for rambling and have been given a yes-but-no answer. Council are concerned that because it is a working farm there maybe health and safety concerns and given that there is no infrastructure (car parks, signage or public toilets) and it is not a vested reserve, they believe that locals should be discouraged from using the site until Council can access the hazards which they will do in November. However, I have pointed out that there are many working farms that have public access and you don’t need infrastructure if you are just going for a walk. It will be interesting to see what the outcome is especially given that our rates have funded the purchase of the land and as per the Sales and Purchase agreement between Rodney Council and the seller, this land should have already been vested as a reserve under the Reserves Act. Lastly, an update on the proposed major safety improvements at the intersection of Coatesville Riverhead and Dairy Flat Highway. Auckland Transport have completed their geotechnical investigations and as a result some of the proposed designs may need to change. Once this is finalised and soon as practicable, public consultation will begin, however work will not start on the project until July 2018. Given the increasing number of serious accidents at this intersection I have asked AT to look at some interim safety measures such as ‘Serious Crash Risk Area’ signs or a speed limit reduction. AT have said that given ‘the look and feel’ of the road it would be difficult to reduce the speed limit but the AT safety team are going to look at what can be done with additional signage as an interim measure.
