S

everal hundred members of the Coatesville community turned out at 7am to mark ANZAC Day at the Settlers Hall on Sunday, 25 April.

Even old friends and neighbours who no longer live strictly in Coatesville, made the trip over the hill to attend the commemorative service organised by the Coatesville Residents and Ratepayers Association.

It was the first ANZAC Day service since 2018 and the clear, sunny morning had a chill in the air that added to the atmosphere.

The mood was formal and yet inclusive and people from of ages and stages took part. Master of Ceremonies was Rodney Local Board Member Louise Johnston. Reverend Robin Palmer from Browns Bay Presbyterian Church once again led the prayers and the ANZAC requiem while Base Auckland Brass from RNZAF Base Auckland provided the musical accompaniment to the national anthems, hymns and the flag lowering and raising. And, bugler Corporal Jeff Tribe performed soulful renditions of the Last Post and the Reveille.

The Hon Mark Mitchell MP spoke, and Coatesville Scouts read the ANZAC dedication and lowered and raisied the flag.

Among the wreaths laid this year was one from the Coatesville Pony Club.

And the stoic site of Lynette Herbke on her horse Moonie reminded everyone of the contribution made by animals both World Wars as well as in military service today.

Traditionally, our ANZAC Day service ends with a cup of tea and an ANZAC biscuit. Not so this year. The feast prepared and provided by members of the ever-generous Hall and Reserve committee was nothing short of spectacular!

L

ast Sunday I bumped into Anna Atkinson and her daughter Pippa shown right at Coatesville Market.

Anna is a member of the Upper Harbour Local Board and she had a fistful of feedback forms in her hand. It turned out she'd been working with Louise Johnston from the Rodney Local Board on a stand at the market, encouraging locals to provide feedback to Auckland Transport about the proposed Regional Land Transport Plan. It was the deadline day for this feedback, and after collecting up the forms, Louise and Anna made sure they were handed in in time to be included before the cut-off date ended.

A week or so earlier I saw Louise and Anna at the protest at the bottom of The Avenue, raising awareness about AT's decision to no longer fund the widening of the Lucas Creek bridge. This is a frightening prospect when you consider that thousands of homes planned for the Milldale development and much of the traffic will feed onto Dairy Flat Highway.

Louise and Anna's hard work far exceeds what can be expected of elected representatives who are supposed to work part time.

I'd like to thank them for all they do on our behalf. With busy family lives to balance, they find time to attend every local event − usually outside business hours − and they always do it with a smile.

ANZAC Day at Lollipops

Bayleys team at home in Coatesville

T

he Bayleys lifestyle team now have a hub of operations in Coatesville with a dedicated office located here. Their new home is sensationally appointed at 328 CoatesvilleRiverhead Highway. Agents who normally work from home or make occasional visits to satellite offices now have a central place as well as access to office facilities.

New Shoots Child Centre in Coatesville

New Shoots Sprouting Up in Coatesville

A

New Shoots child centre is sprouting up in Coatesville on the site next to Fernielea café.

One of the centre’s owners, Michelle Pratt, says significant excavation work has been completed to install water catchment and drainage systems and soon the structure will start to take shape. At this stage, completion is expected to be in April-May 2022.

The build is a collaboration between New Shoots and Signature Homes who are their development partners on the project. Coatesville will be the 16th site New Shoots has opened in

the last 10 years between the Bay of Plenty and Northland, with four of its centres opened in the past year.

Michelle says the decision to build a centre in Coatesville was based on feedback from parents.

“We purchased the land around two years ago after parents who drive to our other centres told us they lived in Coatesville and would really love a New Shoots centre in Coatesville. We also love the rural nature of the area,” she says.

Although there are 16 centres in the network, each building is designed

to be contextual to its own site, so Coatesville's centre shown above will be one of a kind. “Everything is designed in a nature that fits the site so they all vary in style, size and shape and design. We don’t do cookiecutter designs. They’re all unique,” says Michelle.

When the building work is completed Coatesville families will be able to visit and find out more about the New Shoots’ child centre offering.

Roof Shout At Matea Trust The Matea Trust team had reason to celebrate at the end of April when an imprtant project came to fruition.

After months of planning and hard work that included pulling in favours from a network of local businesses, the team finally lashed down the roof on their new self-built, all-weather shed. The idea behind the project was to give the men a dry area outside that they can use during the cooler months and on rainy days. It also provides additional storage for firewood inside the two containers that form the sides of the covered workspace.

t the end of term one Coatesville Playcentre farewelled three incredible families as their big kids left for school. The big kids chose several of their favourite activities for their last week of Playcentre − we had costume making, face painting, sparkly collages, and a pyjama day with grandparents and a cooked breakfast. The biggest hit, and by far the messiest activity we've seen in our collective memories, was paint on the zoom slide! The kids absolutely loved it and even our babies had a turn. With a combined 16 years of membership at our centre, Claire, Tina, Hiroko and their children will be greatly missed. Ka kite anō au i a kotou.

Over the holidays we demolished our rotten fire exit ramp and created a new outdoor space with a level access deck. We are looking forward to this providing easy access to our yummy feijoa trees, as well as a nice shady area for our children to play outdoors.

We will also install an asphalt path from the school gate to our main path which will improve access for After School Care. The next project we are looking to get underway is a new sandpit and we look forward to updating you on this soon. End of Season for Pony Club

N

ow the days are becoming shorter Coatesville Pony Club rallies have finished for the season. We have had a fantastic summer of rallies and events and have seen many new faces join the club.

On Wednesdays we have our junior rallies with six groups under instruction, ranging from lead reiners through to confident teens. The senior rallies on Thursday provide training for more experienced riders up to the age of 21. While learning to ride and care for their ponies, the kids also have a lot of fun. Our junior riders finished up with a ribbon day and shared dinner with lots of happy faces on the night.

This season many of our riders sat their theory and practice certificates.

Riders worked hard towards these and we had kids pass at D, D+, C, C+ and B levels.

We are about to order a new pole trailer for the club. This much anticipated piece of equipment will let us store poles and gear in one place and make it much easier to set up jump rings.

Later this month we will have our prizegiving and AGM. The AGM will be held in the Coatesville hall on 18 May at 7.15pm and anyone who would like to attend is welcome.

Finally, we have one last working bee before winter to bring in the portable cross country jumps and other equipment to store safely.

After lunch the Scouts helped pack down the Cub tents and then spent the afternoon navigating their way around some tracks in the Riverhead Forest from the end of Robinson Road.

Sunday’s main activity was our monthly duty to park the cars for the Coatesville Market. This has become our regular fundraising activity as we collect a gold coin donation from each car we park.

Despite a slow start, being the end of daylight saving, a nice sunny day saw a steady flow of patrons to the market and plenty of work for our Scouts.

Most cooled off in the afternoon with a well-earned dip in the pool before returning to camp where they were sent on a surprise Easter Egg hunt.

Monday was pack-down day but we still managed to fit in the traditional “last-day” waterslide. After lunch, with pack-down completed, we had flag down and some really tired Scouts headed home. Our first 4-night camp over Easter had been a huge success and once again, we must thank Owen and Carol very much for allowing us to camp on their property.

The following week was the final night of the term for Cubs and Scouts and we invested 7 new Cubs and 5 new Scouts and presented numerous badges and certificates, including 8 Bronze and 1 Silver Scout Awards.

We are already preparing for a busy Term 2 with ANZAC Day Services and then 11 Scouts and 3 Leaders will be heading down to the Waikato Adventure Camp at Piopio in early May. Other events planned are the working-bee camp on Coatesville Reserve in mid-June and hopefully a mud-slide in July..

Garden Club goes to Government House

t was an early morning start – the bus left Coatesville Hall at 8.30am to join the traffic going over the bridge for the City Wanderings Tour. With not much traffic (school holidays), we made it in for a wander through Eden Gardens first and some refreshments for the needy. It was interesting to anticipate the clearance of certain flowering borders to make way for the thousands of tulips that must be due in the ground soon (our last visit was in the spring). Kawau Island was visited on Wednesday, 21 April, for the start of the autumn clean up. Buoyed by extra, youthful volunteers, we collected leaves for mulch, weeded garden beds and cut back hedges and perennials. It was an enjoyable and productive day.

We were proud to be asked to lay a wreath on ANZAC Day at the Coatesville ceremony, and thank Helen Cato for her splendid effort in making our contribution and to President Owen Sprosen for laying it.

Protest at The Avenue

riday, 23 April was chilly but at least dry for the residents who took part in an early morning protest at the intersection between The Avenue and Dairy Flat Highway.

We were protesting the omission from the Auckland Transport 10-year plan of the Albany transport improvements (Avenue intersection, widening Lucas Creek bridge and Gills Road intersection improvements).

The only way to get these vital fixes back in the plan is to get as many submissions as possible so we have been trying all sorts of tactics to encourage people to submit. These tactics included maildrops to all of Paremoremo (thanks to Kim Ward for organising), Facebook posts, targeting individuals and targeting groups but the most fun of all was painting and then waving signs. The support from everyone driving past was great.

Hopefully this has resulted in a lot of submissions as they closed on 2 May. At the protest, residents from Paremoremo were joined by local board members (Louise Johnston from Rodney and Anna Atkinson, Margaret Miles, Uzra Casuri Balouch and Nicholas Mayne from Upper Harbour Local Board).

Both boards will keep pushing for these improvements as it's a huge issue for anyone commuting through Albany. It's compounded by the complete failure of public transport in the area and the huge growth in surrounding areas. We will keep pushing Auckland Transport as these projects should be prioritised not dropped.

ne thing for sure is that urban Auckland is encroaching on the Dairy Flat subdivision from all sides.

There are developments in Albany Heights, Riverhead and Silverdale but nothing compares to the Milldale development. Within the development the roading and wastewater infrastructure will support 9000 dwellings.

The main entrance into Milldale will be Dairy Flat Highway via Argent Lane and this is due to open next month.

With 1000 homes already built in Milldale our roads are going to get a lot busier.

Unfortunately, even though both the Government and Council have declared a climate change emergency, there are no cycling connections from Milldale to the Silverdale Park n Ride and public transport has been a complete afterthought.

I cannot stress enough the importance of AT/government delivering on Penlink and funding the widening of Dairy Flat Highway from Stevenson's Crescent to Gills Road in the next 10 years because if they don't, it will be gridlocked.

Another issue of concern has always been the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway and SH16 intersection. While there is the promised roundabout in the 10-year budget, Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) are proposing in the interim to ban right turns from Coatesville Riverhead Highway onto SH16 and redirect traffic to use the Taupaki roundabout via Old Railway Road and Old North Road. Will your trust pass a 2021 health check?

T

he new Trusts Act has now been in force for nearly three months.

This has been a good catalyst for many New Zealanders with trusts to consider why they set up the trust and if it is still actually needed. Trusts are a bit like life insurance in that there are times when you may need more protection. For example with life insurance you need more when you have young children and large debt, but as the debt decreases and the children grow older you may need less. In the same way, the reasons why a trust may have been set up 10 or 15 years ago may no longer exist.

Further, the extra requirements of the new Trusts Act may mean that on balance there is no real need for the trust anymore.

When deciding to wind up a trust, extra care must now be taken around the implications of the brightline test.

And, winding up a trust and putting assets back into personal names does re-start the ownership cycle for brightline. Now that that has been extended to 10 years, many people are choosing to retain trusts that

they may otherwise have wound up, waiting to wind up when they sell the property which could be caught.

Many people are also reviewing the terms of their trust, ensuring that it is fit for purpose in 2021. A big driver here is looking at who the beneficiaries are and ensuring that they are actually people who you want to benefit from the trust. This is particularly in light of the changes to the law which gives beneficiaries greater rights to trust information.

Those with trusts have also been reviewing other elements of their trust – eg any restrictions around how the trustees can invest trust assets, whether trustee decisions need to be unanimous and whether professional trustees can be paid for their involvement in the trust. It is very important to review the terms of the trust deed to determine whether these sorts of provisions comply with the new Act, and if not, what if anything can be done to resolve this.

Pest Plant: Wild Ginger

W

e have two wild ginger pest plants in New Zealand, both are also known as ginger lily and one is also known as Kahili ginger and the other yellow ginger. Regardless of what you like to call them they look very similar and their nuisance factor is high. The main difference between them is their flowering period. The Kahili form flowers January to March and has fragrant yellow flowers followed by orange fruit.

Yellow ginger has cream to light yellow flowers in May-June and doesn’t produce seed. Both were introduced in the 1860s for their flowers, not for their culinary use.

Since then they have made a meal of New Zealand’s warmer climes gobbling up big tracts of land if left unchecked. They are a bit frost tender so are generally not found in colder regions.

Stock will eat wild ginger but in uncontrolled areas there are no predators, allowing it to grow unchecked unless there is human intervention. Wild ginger has a very invasive root system of rhizomes, like a fleshy root, this root mass can be up to a metre deep and as they migrate will smother the roots of nearby plants killing them. Regeneration of native plants doesn’t happen because of the roots and the dense foliage growth which can be 2m tall. It can dominate

vast areas and in native bush is detrimental to Kiwi survival.

How is it spread around the country?

Mostly by humans dumping it where they shouldn’t, but also from being washed out of stream banks and with the Kahili form by birds taking the seed. It can be carried between sites on machinery, a small piece of rhizome will quickly establish a new colony.

What also aids wild ginger's spread is its ability to grow in a wide range of conditions from dense shade to full sun, dry drought conditions to being immersed in sea water and all types of soil.

Eradication is time consuming. If the clump is small enough, dig it out making sure you getting every little piece, then either put it in a plastic bag to rot, or spread it out in a safe place to dry out then burn it. Both methods will take some months.

For bigger clumps, go through and cut it down and then immediately spray thoroughly the freshly cut stumps with 1g of Metsulfuron-Methyl (Escort plus other trade names) in 1L of water.

For big clumps, spraying is really the only viable option. Once again use Metsulfuron-Methyl 5g in 10L of water with 10ml of penetrant. Be really careful when spraying as this is a strong herbicide.
