or around 2000 participants in the Running Events Coatesville Half Marathon, 8km and 4km runs, Valentine's Day was the chance to celebrate their true love ... of exercise!

A perfect summer morning promised a hot finish and the Running Events team issued reminders to runners to stay hydrated and listen to their bodies. The tang of liniment on the breeze at the start line (1) suggested many were ready to do battle with the hilly course. Less than an hour and a quarter later, Rodwyn Issacs (2), crossed the line in a best-ever course time of 1:14:13. Four minutes after that, second place went to Daniel

Plews (3) 1:18:42. Daniel holds the record as the fastest amateur athlete to complete Hawaii's Kona Ironman race. Third home was Ants Blackmoore (4) from Cambridge in 1:23:23. The first three women home (5) were Bethany Bromfeld centre in 1:27:22; Jess Gerry left in 1:32:47 and Katie Rice right in 1:34:00.

Among the senior runners was Colleen Falloon (6) right, who completed the 21km in 2:42:03. Plenty of Coatesville kids took part in the 4km run, too (7 & 8) and proudly displayed their medals to onlookers like MP Mark Mitchell (9).

It was the event's 11th year and the 98th race organised by Running Events.

hen I read the unwelcome news that mail thieves had returned to the Coatesville area, I knew it required action on my part. Since I started delivering the Coatesville Chronicle back in October, I've been in an unmarked black car approaching and leaving letterboxes as quickly as possible. So, if anyone looks like a letterbox bandit, it's me!

In an effort to show I'm on official Chronicle business, I've invested in a yellow flashing safety light that sits on the roof of my black Kia Sportage. Although this might look a bit OTT, I also wanted to appear more noticeable to other cars on the road, so if you're driving around Coatesville and you see me and or my car at a letterbox, you'll know I'm legit.

Although mail theft is bad news for the community, it was surprising to hear from the Police that no reports of mail theft had been made to them by 24 February. On page 4 they ask people to call the 105 number if any mail thefts occur.

Recently I read on Stuff.co.nz that there have benn 36,000 speeding

infringements issued to drivers clocked travelling at more than 60kmph along the CoatesvilleRiverhead Highway. Auckland Transport's speed reductions have everyone's safety in mind, but if you feel the new speed limit on this piece of road is too slow, you should fill in the online feedback form at https://at.govt.nz/aboutus/contact-us/feedback-form/ because AT can make changes if enough people complain. So, don't leave it to social media to get the job done.

In this issue there are plenty of community updates including a report on page 6 from the Coatesville Golf Classic by Peter Savage. You have to give it to these cross-country golf crazies; they sure know how to make their own fun!

On page 8 our Local Board member Louise Johnston asks the community to provide feedback to Auckland Council's 10-year budget and the CRRA has this month's helpful hints.

Plant expert Grant McKechnie returns for March with advice on how to get rid of the pest plant Privet, on page 10.

The February Coatesville Market pulled a large crowd (1) over Waitaingi weekend.

Among those spotted were NIWA scientist Chris Brandolino with his son Dominic (2) who were out enjoying the sunshine, as well as condiment queen Liz Curtis with husband Alan at the Hearts Content stall (3) where Liz's handmade preserves rushed off the shelf as usual. The team from Te Rata Wines (4) helped keep their customers chilled while the aromatic spices from the Rwandan cuisine stall (5) were hard to resist.

Mail thieves return Emails from the SVaC List in February alerted locals to the return of mail theft. According to the list''s author, Charles Du Toit, a number of residents reported mail theft between Friday, 19 February and the end of the month. Charles advised anyone whose mail had been stolen to report the matter to the Police by calling 105. However, on Wedneday 24 February the Police had this to say: Waitemata Police are not immediately aware of receiving any recent reports in relation to mail thefts in the Coatesville area. If people have been a victim of mail theft we would encourage them to report this to Police so we can make follow up enquiries. In general, Police ask the community to be on the lookout for suspicious behaviour such as individuals hanging arounds letterboxes or vehicles acting suspiciously. Anyone with information should contact Police by phoning 105.

Popera in the Paddock Congratulations to Sue and Ritchie Davidson on the success of their Popera in the Paddock fundraiser, which raised $5500 for the Child Cancer Foundation. Close to 90 people came along to enjoy performances by singer Mary Livingston and vioinist Nick Jones on a balmy summer evening that couldn't have been more perfect, said Sue. Only a day or so later, the rain arrived and stayed for a few days so the timing was perfect too!

Congrats Mr Miller After months spent nurturing his muchloved begonia plants, Coatesville's Sid Miller once again walked away with a host of awards at this year's Auckland Begonia Festival. Sid won awards in all four categories of begonia growing and shared the top champion prize for his begonia called White Waterfall shown above.

Look Local A mini market for Coatesville's small businesses is taking place on 6 May and organiser Debbie Skillcorn is looking for businesses to take part.

The event called Look Local will feature small businesses with a product or service they want to promote to local people. At this stage Debbie has put the word out on Facebook but there's still time to book a space at the Settlers Hall. Everyone is welcome to come along and check out what's for sale on the day between 2pm and 4pm.

he Coatesville Country Garden Club forges ahead in these tricky times with a very busy programme coming for the year. Maybe because we have eight committee members this results in all sorts of activities to cater for many and varied interests. We try and visit a local garden each month as showing off is one of the pleasures of our hobby. February was a stunner at Adrienne Fisher's garden (above) and had the members amazed at how much there was to see and admire, from a lake with flowering lilies to native bush. With many of our lady members often having to catch up on the local "news" the blokes had to keep occupied so we check out each others sheds. This often includes car collections and Allan Blackmore's was out of this world − a very lucky opportunity that was. The men also are keen to participate in the fruit and vege competitions, so these activities could be why we now have 31 male members and growing. The year ahead will likely have Covid challenges we will have to work around, but with the networking amongst the members, anyone who needs a helping hand is well catered for. Just like a very large family who tries to not only support each other we also try to support local things like our wonderful cafés and work in the Coatesville Reserve to restore some native bush alongside the stream behind the hall with monthly working bees.

Golf Classic Tees Off in style N ot even Covid and a mini lockdown the week before could stop The Coatesville Golf Classic this year!

On a stunning day, not a cloud in the sky or a breeze to be felt, the 20 Coatesville athletes donned their plus-fours and headed out for the, now famous, annual event. As always, a hearty barbecue breakfast started the day, washed down with a beer or two to set the day off as it meant to go on. I have to say, a beer at 8am sounds like a terrible thing but (and maybe I can blame Covid for my increased alcohol intake), but the first beer went down far too well.

For some, again due to Covid, the last time some of these menfolk met was at the previous golf event, so there was much catching up to do.

Being men that was mostly a good handshake and a nod.

This year there was a slight change of plan. No longer were we to be driven from hole to hole in trailers like livestock, but we were to play all the holes within walking distance based around the great community of Collings Drive.

The first hole looked simple but with a huge drop down to the hole on sun-hardened ground proved to be very tricky. For some a putter off the tee seemed the answer and that worked remarkably well. For others it was the first lost ball of the day. Uphill and down dale the men marched as the day grew hotter and hotter.

The holes were challenging in every

way. Not only selecting the right club (from the three allowed) but the harsh conditions and the very, very, very steep paddocks Collings Drive folk have tucked away.

Steve Williams put on a huge and delicious spread for morning tea. Hobby (Mark Hobson) made a spectacular, and I would have thought impossible, shot right into a glasshouse without breaking a single pane. Contender for duff shot of the day we thought.

Lunch was served at Brett’s house which seems like it’s mostly outdoors (real estate agent would sell it as having a wonderful indoor, outdoor, outdoor, outdoor flow). It was too good, and once sat down and stomachs full again it was difficult to move on. The day seemed to get hotter and hotter and harder and harder with more and more impossible holes to play.

Golfers gather

In the end, we finished back at the first hole green, the scores were added up (or made up in some cases) and the prizes awarded. Now at this stage I am usually a little hazy but on this occasion I think I can remember most of who got what. Nat King won for a second time (just pipping Des Ling), Steve Williams won duff shot of the day for missing the ball but the tee going a remarkable distance and the ball landing in exactly the same spot. He did this not once but twice!

Phil Anderson won the Adam Osman cup for best sport (read that as most drunk). Longest drive Maurice Hoban and nearest the pin was ...? Ok, still a little hazy. After checking with others, we think this may have been Mark Hobson.

The athletes drank and told tales of near misses into the evening, some of the good lady folk came along and reclaimed their husbands. Those that didn’t get claimed, made their way home on foot some taking a little longer than others. Andy Glasson, we believe was last man home after

1.5-hour walk getting some extra steps in for the day. He may have recorded a new Fitbit record, we are awaiting confirmation from the Guinness book of records.

One of the amazing events that happens every year is the number of emails, text messages and other forms of communication from many of the participants looking for lost items and several of the hole hosts posting items left behind. There is more communication done after the event reuniting people with their property than there is arranging the event in the first place.

All in all, another spectacular day and we're all looking forward to 2022 event. 

10-year budget. Last month I stressed the importance of being the ‘squeaky wheel’. If you have never provided feedback on Council’s/ Auckland Transport’s (AT) 10year budgets now is a good time to start! Feedback numbers are always relatively low, but they are analysed for common themes and this information is used for decision making. So, please voice your frustration with Council this month and AT via feedback on their 10-year budgets!

Council’s 10 Year Budget: This budget sets out the funding for Council’s activities, services and investment for the next 10 years. As a result of Covid-19, Council has forecasted a $1 billion shortfall in revenue over the next 4 years. Even with the proposal in the draft budget to increase Council borrowings in the short term and a proposed 5% rate increase there are still hard decisions to be made. Auckland is a massive sprawling city that goes from Drury to Wellsford. There are too many community facilities that are

I am really concerned that Council is delaying strategic planning for the Super City and will continue to build more and more houses without infrastructure and let the future generations inherit the problem.

Auckland Transport’s Regional land Transport Plan: in late March, AT will be asking for feedback on the Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP).

The RLTP is a 10-year investment programme for transport in Auckland.

This budget is revised every three years. In our area, I am very concerned about the congestion at the bottom of Albany Hill. With 4500 new houses scheduled to be built at Milldale by 2030 this is going to get a lot busier.

Especially when the new road from Argent Lane to Dairy Flat opens soon. In the last RLTP there was a ring fenced and funded project for widening of Dairy Flat Highway from Stevenson’s Cres to Gills Road. This project also included replacing the Lucas Creek Bridge and signalisation of The Avenue/Dairy Flat Highway Intersection. However, this project has now been rolled up into the ‘strategic review’ of the Gills Road link project which is making me a little nervous that this long overdue work will never be delivered. Pest Plant: Privet

T

his month’s pest plant is Privet (Ligustrum), another from the long list of plants introduced to New Zealand as hedging, and that liked it so much here they try to take over.

There are at least four Privet varieties.

The main differences between them being the leaf sizes and the mature size of the plant, plus there are some variances in their flowering and seeding times. Generally the bigger-leaved varieties are the bigger growing.

All flower and seed prolifically, grow in a broad range of conditions from dry to wet and in heavy shade to full sun. If left unchecked their prolific seeding will quickly establish a mini forest, smothering any native regrowth and to make matters worse, the seed is eaten and distributed by birds, leading to new areas of invasion. The scent of the creamy white flowers is known to aggravate asthma, while the purple seed and leaves can be poisonous to animals and humans, but not birds.

Eradication is tricky. Privet looks very similar to one of our native plants,

Mahoe, also known as Whitey Wood (Melicytus ramiflorus).

Mahoe has very similar leaves and both have purple berries.

Not only does Privet look similar it often inhabits the same areas that you would expect to find Mahoe; our native forest margins. This can lead to Mahoe being destroyed because it’s mistakenly thought to be Privet.

If you are unsure if you have Privet or Mahoe there are several ways to distinguish them. Have a look at the trunk, Mahoe should have white blotches on its bark. Mahoe is also a surprisingly dense and heavy white wood when you cut into it. Another difference is Privet has a more upright form whereas Mahoe is more random with branches often going horizontal before they go vertical. And lastly, Mahoe seeds and flowers will be down the stem below the new growth.

Back to eradication, Privet has a strong tap root making it difficult to pull out even relatively small plants and it’s likely any root you leave behind will re-sprout and carry on growing. Spraying with herbicides is the easiest way to attack this pest Privet plant but you must get good coverage on all of the leaves. This can be difficult if you have big plants to deal with.

An alternative is to cut them down and treat the stump, and if they are too big for you to cut down, frilling or, drill and inject will also work. Frilling is where you work your way around the base of the trunk giving it a decent clout with an axe to make deep cuts which you then fill with herbicide. Drill and inject is the same theory, work your way around the base drilling 15-20mm diameter downward sloping holes to fill with herbicide. For all of these methods, frilling, drill and inject or painting the stump, I use either Glyphosate, Metsulfuron-methyl or Triclopyr at triple strength. You need to do it within 10-minutes of inflicting the wound so that it soaks in before the wound dries out. With the chemical at this strength you need to be very careful about making sure you only get your target plants.  Mahoe

oatesville’s volunteer army of pest eradicators has grown over the summer with more people putting up their hands to help out. The number of traps registered on Trap NZ is moving in the right direction and Pest Free Coatesville group leader, Gary Langridge says they are now poised for action.

Their first project will be to start monitoring the traplines now in place on the 54 hectares of land at Green Road. The second will be to install traps in the Coatesville Scenic Reserve once a community agreement is in place with the Department of Conservation.

“We’re just waiting for DoC’s Community Agreement and once that’s finalised we can draw down the grant and purchase the traps we’ll need in Coatesville Scenic Reserve,” explains Gary. “For now, we’re on standby in that area but Green Road is ready to go.”

The recent lockdowns have hampered progress somewhat but luckily the majority of the groundwork had been completed at Green Road with 100 traps already in place before the move to Level 3.

"Soon we'll hold a meeting with volunteers to go over how to run the trap lines and schedule the ongoing task of baiting the traps," says Gary.

Thinking of Selling?

ere is a snapshot of real estate in Coatesville right now.

There are 55 properties in Coatesville for sale of which 22 are bare blocks (some of these bare block listings include subdivisions of more than one block therefore potentially 30+ sections available). On average prior to Christmas there was at least 75 properties in total for sale.

What has happened? With the current buoyant market properties have sold leaving few properties for buyers to choose from. Lucky Vendors!

Consider also the wide range in which property sells in our community. Anywhere from entry level at circa $1.5 million to $8 million-plus. I know that now is a great time to sell however I also know that with such a buoyant market potential vendors are concerned about what they might then go and buy. Can they find their next perfect property? There are ways to protect yourself and make this more manageable so that you are buying and selling in the same market.

Fundamentally the simplest way is to control your settlement date. i.e., give yourself a longer settlement, for example three months or longer. This will allow you to secure an offer on your property at a level that is acceptable to you however gives you a period of time in which to find your new property. Particularly if you are downsizing or looking to go residential where the campaigns for property are around three weeks. It’s important to call me and understand where your property sits and discuss the best way to achieve the right money for you. My team and I can also give you an understanding of property values in the area you are considering moving to which also helps you make an informed decision, or we can put you in touch with the local agent.

When you are looking for a new area to move to there will be a number of things to consider depending on your family dynamics and situation, for example, closest supermarket, school bus, public transport, schools, nearest beach etc.

Then the hard work starts with viewing property until you find the one you love! Understanding that area value-wise is also important. Don’t be afraid to ask the real estate agent representing the property for a list of recent sales in that area and if possible specifically other properties that are similar to the one you are considering. Of properties that you have viewed, keep in touch with the list agent and ask for the sale price once sold so you again keep yourself informed. This all helps when you do find ‘the one’!

One last note in relation to ‘maintaining our homes’, I have noticed already that some of the trees are starting to turn to the autumn colours. Seems earlier than normal but critically important as this is a time to keep your gutters cleaned regularly so that you get maximum flow into your water tanks and with minimal muck. It is much easier to keep on top of this from the start. It could be time for you to consider gutter guard which helps immensely.
