Warming up winter's chill

T

wo Auckland artists are spreading warmth around the city again this winter with their "Give a Kid a Blanket" initiative. During June and July Bernie Harfleet and Donna Turtle Sarten are collecting quality pre-loved and new blankets as well as other cosy items to distribute via social workers and public health nurses to those who need them. But Bernie says their cause is about more than charity. "The main idea is to make people who might be a bit down on their luck feel valued by the wider community." he says. "People's circumstances can change suddenly and often they don't want to ask for help. It can happen to anyone," he explains. The pair started the initiative in 2015 and last year won ASB's Good As Gold Award for their efforts. Each year the amount of donated items has increased and this year Bernie and Donna have been loaned a van for two months by Tristram European so they can collect and distribute the donated items all over Auckland. On Friday, 15 June, Coatesville residents will be able to contribute to Give a Kid a Blanket from 2pm to 4pm at the Settlers Hall. However, for those who would prefer to help keep this cause going, you can help them to cover their costs which include driving 700km per week and paying rent on their warehouse space, by donating on their give a little page at www.givealittle. co.nz.

Ben, Xander, Alexander and Theo ready for some fluoro fun

School disco a highlight

Coatesville School's Funky and Fluoro Disco held in May was another chart-topping success with kids, teachers and parents. The event, which was run by the Friends of the School, saw students dressed in bright coloured outfits designed to catch the light as they busted out their moves on the Settlers Hall dancefloor.

Ram raid arrest

A 17-year-old South Auckland man was charged with burglary in March in relation to the ram raid burglary of the GAS Albany Heights service station on 14 March. He is remanded in custody to appear at court in June 2018. Enquiries are continuing to identify his co-offenders, says Detective Sergeant Aaron Iremonger, Orewa Police. For more information about local crime, see the Police Update on page 3.

The students were divided into junor and senior age groups so everyone had plenty of space and fun with their friends. Principal Richard Johnson says, "The disco is an annual highlight that Coatesville School students look forward to and it was great to see it so well supported again by the entire school community."
