Junior Award Winners Named

P

est free Coatesville has awarded its first-ever Junior Awards to two young trappers who are passionate about conservation. Dan Owen Stone, a 17-year-old year 12 student from Albany Senior High School and Lewis Jones, a 16-year-old-year 12 student from Kristin School, have both been selected for the awards. Dan's interest in trapping was ignited at the end of 2021 when the opportunity to make wooden tunnels used to house the Victor traps came about. Soon he was making between 3 and 5 tunnels a week in his impact project class. At first these were used on Albany Senior’s trapline in the bush on its boundary, but production exceeded the school's needs and soon Dan was making tunnels for Pest Free Coatesville group. PFC leader Gary Langridge says the tunnels Dan makes are being installed along the Coatesville Scenic Reserve traplines where volunteers began working in May.

and stoats. It could reach further into the community and across the city,” says Cate. Although Dan started working on the trap tunnels because he enjoys making things, his interest quickly grew and today he's one of a group of students involved in the project who also regularly check the school's trapline and bait the traps. Fellow award winner Lewis Jones is studying outdoor education as part of his year 12 course at Kristin School. He hopes to one day have a career working with nature and the great outdoors, because, as he says: "I'm concerned about the threatened native species, and how many native birds we have lost." . Gary Langridge says, "Both Dan and Lewis are making valuable contributions to pest animal eradication in our area. By sharing what they learn with their peers and the wider community, we believe they'll make excellent ambassadors for the work we're doing through Pest Free Coatesville." As part of their award, Dan and Lewis will be flown to Wellington to visit Zealandia, a pest-free sanctuary where New Zealand flora and fauna thrive. They will also get advice from Good Nature on how to use their state of the art A24 traps.

Coatesville local Cate Haigh is Dan's mentor. “Dan’s impact project is being done through the Conservation Hub and has grown from simply providing traps outside the school. The idea is they’re going to donate traps to other groups and people who want to get rid of rats
