Community remembers father and son

T

wo days after the tragic deaths of Lee Roycroft and his 13-yearold son Phoenix, Coatesville's community gathered for a candlelight vigil at the Coatesville Reserve to honour the well-loved father and son.

Among those present were members of the victims' family who shared warm hugs with the friends and neighbours.

Many of Phoenix's school friends were present, some from the Coatesville Primary community and others from Albany Junior where he was a year 8 student. Several Police officers also attended the vigil which ended following a minute's silence.

A funeral to farewell Lee and Phoenix was held on Tuesday, 1 June at the Settlers Hall.

oatesville opened its hearts following the terrible news that Lee and Phoenix Roycroft had lost their lives last week.

The popular pair touched the lives of their friends in such a positive way that there has been an amazing response from the whole community after their untimely passing.

When words fall short, actions speak volumes and Coatesville responded with a surge of support for the Roycroft family. Affirmative action replaced tears for a while as people got busy doing what they could to help.

The candlelight vigil held last Thursday gave everyone a chance to share their shock and grief collectively − just for a moment. Children and adults, family members, friends and neighbours all held up candles in memory of Lee and Phoenix during a minute's silence that resonated with emotion. Afterwards a super moon rose over the Settlers Hall that seemed to be honouring the pair as well.

A Givealittle page set up to raise money for the Roycroft family was soon accepting donations and Black Cottage cafe opened to provide drinks and snacks after the vigil with all

Jumble sale

The beautiful weather on a market day meant we had many people through the gate for our jumble sale. We received many generous donations from the community prior to the event and we were thrilled to make around $800 on the day to put towards our new sandpit project. We also donated several bags of leftover goods to Warming Hearts and the Mum's Clique. We look forward to holding more fundraisers at our centre once the market starts back in spring. Clothes Swap is back in 2021 Kate and Bex’s Annual Clothes Swap started six years ago with four racks, a handful of coat hangers, a batch of scones, one coffee plunger and $1200 raised at home in the lounge.

Fast forward to 2021, we now have over 100 racks, thousands of coat hangers, Sweet As Crepes do the food, the Harcourts Coffee Cart sponsored

by Simone du Bernard and we raise between $10,000−$15,000. For the last two years we have been lucky enough to use the Coatesville Hall to run our event, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Unfortunately we have grown out of the Coatesville Hall, so this year we are re-locating to the Big Sheds at the Kumeu Showgrounds.

Bayleys Coatesville Office Opens

he Coatesville office of Bayley's Real Estate celebrated its formal opening with a cocktail party on 12 May. A host of local residents came along as well as friends from further afield. John Bayley, the company's founder, made the drive out from the city and joked about commute time. And guest speaker, economist Cameron Bagrie shared his professional insights including his prediction of a bright investment future for Coatesville real estate given the area's proximity to Auckland city.

ravelling in a luxury coach is a great way to see everything!

The Coatesville Country Garden Club moved off at 8.30am on Tuesday, 4 May travelling north. The view from the windows was much more exciting than usual in a car – you could see over high fences and bushy hedges to take in an expansive view. We sped way up north turning left at the Brynderwyns, to arrive at Paparoa nicely in time for morning tea. Behind the shops was a north-facing hillside garden which was bearing all kinds of fruit — tamarillos, passionfruit, citrus of all kinds (some of the biggest lemons I’ve ever seen) some spent feijoas and apple trees as well as foliage shrubs and a variety of canna colours. The wisteria twisting its way up and over the verandah was a veteran which would provide welcome shade in the sunny environment. A joy to wander around.

The local shops were anticipating good numbers through — they had ranges of interesting knick-knacks, outdoor wear and lots to eat and drink − win/win for all.

Next stop was the famed Matakohe Kauri Museum. Most of us couldn’t do justice in an hour to the magnificent displays of historic photos, artifacts, tools and tableaux relating all aspects of the early kauri trade in those pioneering times and vowed to return in our own time. What a tough existence for often meagre returns for the hard slog endured. The living mannequin caught us all off guard but provided entertainment for one of the outstanding static displays.

We were well ready for the delicious lunch that the Gumdiggers’ Café across the road provided. Organised in relays, we were able to help ourselves to sandwiches and scones, while admiring the quiet, peaceful countryside views.

Our final garden was in Maungaturoto — again on a north-facing slope, looking over the countryside. Gardens were terraced along the driveway in, showing off a rich variety of plantings while native plantings were down the roadway stretching to a lower area which was being readied to sell off as a section.

Overall a sunny day was enjoyed by the busload of happy gardeners.

The recent coffee event at Black Cottage was well patronised by a chatty group of women and men who have taken up the option of attending too. On separate tables the woes of the world and garden problems were solved and conviviality prevailed.

The Blokes will be out and about the following week too, as they attended Richard’s shed in Waitoki – rich in automotive restoration work, car parts and accessories for veteran vehicles. Ideal weather for such a visit. Richard has a superb vegetable garden as well, the produce of which he shows off regularly at our meetings.

Make sure you visit the July column in The Chronicle to hear about the first hall meeting of the Garden Club in the winter calendar, as well as other interesting club activities.

Also, on Sunday, 20 June from 9am until 11am we have 250 native trees to plant at the Coatesville Reserve Stream revegetation area behind the hall. All Coatesville residents are welcome to bring a spade and dig in.

Scouts Go to Camp in the Waikato

he second term started very quickly for Coatesville Scouts. On just the first weekend back after the May school holidays, Coatesville Scouts made the annual trip to the Waikato Zone Adventure Camp at Piopio in the central North Island.

Eleven scouts and three leaders travelled to Dawson’s Farm, just outside Piopio, where for 47 years, one of the largest Zone Camps is held in NZ with up to 240 scouts from all over the North Island attending a weekend of challenging outdoor activities. This camp is traditionally held on Mother’s Day weekend and Coatesville has been attending every year since 2012.

Because of the distance to travel we always depart on the Friday morning which means scouts get the added bonus of a day off school.

Off to an early start.

On Friday, 7 May at 9.30am we met up with seven scouts and two leaders from Taiaotea (Browns Bay) at Coatesville Hall and set off in convoy at 10am. For the past few years, we have travelled and camped with Taiaotea, who, we have combined with as a contingent Coatesville Scouts ready to head home. for the past four Jamboree. activity teams and they move around all the activity bases as a group. As with previous years we were not with Taiaotea scouts but this means there is a lot to discuss and compare at the end of each day. The activities are shooting, cliff abseiling, caving, quadbikes, grass skiing, four-wheel drive trips, flying fox and archery and a frisbee and GPS Base.

Each group gets 1 ½ hours at each activity with plenty of time for multiple goes and they don’t return to camp until the end of the day. An early dinner and clean-up was followed by a very pleasant evening sitting around the campfire with some raucous singing and competition between several similar campfires on site.

Sunday dawned a damp drizzly day but with a slightly more leisurely start, with flagbreak at 7.30am before activities.

The scouts returned to camp between 12.30 and 1.30pm depending on how long they were held back to help clear up the activity sites and scoffed down a hot dog lunch before helping with pack-down of the campsite. Unfortunately, the drizzly day saw a wet pack-down but we still managed to leave site just before 3pm despite a lot of vehicles skidding on the greasy, muddy driveway.

A lot of very tired scouts were met by parents at Coatesville Hall at 7.30pm but all will agree that the Piopio Camp is one of the best they ever attend. All experienced new challenges, with many overcoming personal fears and doubts, but with everyone keen to do it again next year.

Our next camp will be in mid-June where we will again join up with Taiaotea for our annual Reserve Camp and Working-Bee weekend tidying up the Coatesville Reserve.

uckland’s Councillors are currently deciding whether to support a Mayoral Proposal to increase rates next year by an average of 5 percent, or alternatively by 3.5 percent.

Importantly, that process included asking Aucklanders which option they supported.

Council provided written consultation material, online information sessions, face-to-face public meetings, and social media videos to explain the different impacts between a 5 and a 3.5 percent average rates increase.

Overwhelmingly, very well-informed Aucklanders rejected the Mayor’s budget.

Public feedback also included a need to find revenue and savings, internal cost reductions rather than just efficiency gains. Many people commented about the financial hardship they were under and having to make cost reductions, why wasn’t the Council doing the same?

True cost reductions will be impossible without Council defining what its core business is. I will continue to push to ensure this happens.

Rejection of the 5 percent rates increase was even more pronounced from Rodney’s residents with a massive 70 percent of people not supporting the Mayoral proposal.

Most people’s feedback explained they supported the 3.5 percent rates increase with many wanting even lower rate increases.

Personally, I have supported all of the advocacy points of the Rodney Local Board. However, I did not support their idea to increase the rates by 8 percent.

Feedback on the Mayor’s proposal from Rodney’s residents included wanting Council to get back to core business, stopping wastage and overspending, a reduction in regulations and compliance costs,

and a reduction in senior executive salaries.

Ratepayers disapproved of Council planning to spend more than ever yet Rodney was being marginalised from that spending.

This has proven inconvenient for the Mayor, forcing him to promote a smaller Colmar Brunton poll, ahead of the official public feedback results, as the new source of truth. This poll cost ratepayers $110,000 returning a favourable result of 9 percent more people supporting his budget than rejecting it.

I believe the poll was fundamentally flawed because it only had the 5 percent option, and it failed to mention the cumulative effect of 7

percent water rate increases or the regional fuel tax, or the Rodney Local Board additional transport tax — all of which was outlined in the Council’s official consultation documentation for a fully informed public.

Regardless, the people have spoken and have sent a very clear message.

They want their elected Super City representatives to uphold their democratic wishes, however, I am doubtful that will happen.

Although the pros and cons around the rate increase options were clearly laid out in Council’s comprehensive consultation documents, many elected members have signalled they will support the Mayor’s proposal.

Increasing rates is an easy fix for Council. Digging deep and making cuts back to core business, as most businesses have to do in hard times, requires tougher calls to be made.

As a Councillor I am refused a full breakdown of the amount of money being spent back into Rodney, or into each of the other Wards across Auckland. This makes it impossible for myself, and my other likeminded colleagues, to effectively advance alternative budgets to find a middle ground more acceptable to Aucklanders.

However, it will be with a clear sense of duty and surety that I will be representing the people of Rodney when the rate increase decision must be made.

Another feeling that came through in the public feedback was a continued lack of trust in the Council. Well, maybe taxing by stealth and riding rough-shot over the people paying the politicians wages is the exact conduct the public don’t trust.

My prediction is in future years the Council will be seeking from you even greater rate increases because of its increasing spending, spiralling debt and failure to peel back to core services.

Rodney Local Board Update

ith only a month to go until the end of Council’s financial year, it is a great opportunity to update everyone on some of the key projects/ issues.

Transport: As a result of the success of the 126-bus service from Westgate to Albany, Auckland Transport (AT) are going to take over the running costs of this service. This service was previously funded by the Rodney Local Board targeted rate, so this is great news. A big thank you to everybody that is using this service as not only are you reducing your carbon footprint, you're helping ease congestion.

The new bus stops on Coatesville-Riverhead Highway by Lewis Lane and Gold Flats Rd are scheduled to be constructed next month which should also increase patronage of this service.

As everybody knows, our roads have been taking a pounding and several of our key roads are scheduled for resurfacing including CoatesvilleRiverhead Highway, Sunnyside Road, Kahikatea Flat Road and Dairy Flat Highway.

Council is currently completing a number of plans and reports, including a tree management plan, topographical survey, contaminated land assessment, ecological report and environmental management plan. This month we have secured funding for tree maintenance from underspends in other projects. The next plan to be commissioned is a trail networks plan. We are so lucky to have this future park in our neighbourhood.

While progress does seem slow, it is very important with a park this size to get the planning in place. To open it up we don’t need over-engineered pathways, but simple trails. But we do need to start planting out and landscaping the park, as great parks are all about great Trees.

Well-Being Budget Winter Wellness

udget 2021 supports the people and businesses of Kaipara ki Mahurangi and leads New Zealand’s recovery from Covid 19, while addressing the challenges of our time.

It embeds wellbeing into day-to-day decision-making, and takes a balanced approach that keeps New Zealanders safe from COVID, accelerates our health and economic recovery and tackles the country’s long-term challenges like child wellbeing, housing, and climate change.

It addresses key social and infrastructure issues while raising the bar on health, education and the economy through prudent investment across the electorate and the country The Budget allocates new funding to teachers on the lowest pay in early education and care services. It delivers improved breast and cervical cancer screening; more money for Pharmac; better childcare for working families; a more humane welfare safety net for those out of work; support for a transition to a carbon neutral public sector by 2025; free vaccines for every New Zealander and recovery and reset support for tourism companies.”

For Kaipara ki Mahurangi specifically this means a vibrant but ecologically sustainable economy, reduced poverty and inequality within the electorate, investment in schools and education, better access to life saving medical screening and treatment, and fairer wages and conditions for workers.

A

s we hurtle into the colder months of the year it's time to have a quick refresher on boosting immunity and keeping well.

Sadly, at exactly the time when our bodies are finding it hardest to fight disease, many viruses get a new lease of life. The “cold” is called that for the reason that these common upper respiratory infections thrive in slightly lower temperatures.

Here are a few things that we can do to fight back and help out our overworked immune systems.

Sunshine Vitamin D plays an essential role in the immune system and it may be the scarcity of this nutrient over the winter months that can lead to us being more vulnerable to illness. The best source is made in the skin when we are exposed to sunshine. In summer our levels peak, and the excess is stored for the winter months when the sunshine is less plentiful. We do need to top these up though and 10-30 minutes 3-4 times a week can do this.

Hydration An area often known but neglected is hydration. Its not just the summer when this needs to be a focus. Our immune system relies on the transport of nutrients, and elimination of toxins and waste, to operate efficiently.

When these functions are disrupted due to dehydration, your immunity weakens and you become susceptible to infection. A good target is 30ml per kilo body weight (80kg = 2.4 L).

e are at the end of autumn and driving around the local community there are incredible scenes of bursting colour. We are as well in a changing world and do not seem to have the same peaks and troughs in our Real Estate seasons. There are many cash buyers looking to secure right now — from local to the regions and expats.
