Remember to slow down O

n Tuesday 30 June, the new speed limits come into effect throughout Auckland and road users are expected to comply from day one. In total there are more than 2800 speed limit signs across the city being updated by Auckland Transport and they ask motorists to take care and watch out for the contractors doing this work that day. AT's spokesperson Natalie Polley says, "Where new signs are required, these have been installed with a blank face covering the speed limit. Where existing signs require changing, the old sign is replaced with a new sign which has been covered by a special vinyl sticker showing the current speed limit. All of the covers will be removed on 30 June when the new speeds come into effect." For motorists in and around Coatesville, the new speed limit on the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway may feel unnatural to begin with. Until now, the top speed on the highway has been 80kmph. However, from the

changeover onwards, large sections will drop to 60kmph. Even so, drivers should be aware that the Police can issue speeding tickets to anyone who ignores the reduced speed limit. Michael Rickards, Road Policing Manager, Waitemata says, "Police will be responsible for enforcing these new speed limits and ensuring drivers adhere to them. Our officers will focus on engaging with motorists during the first few weeks of the limit changes and educating them about reducing their speed. However, if motorists are found to be over the speed limit and driving in a manner and at a speed that may potentially put other road users at risk, we have the discretion to issue them with a speeding infringement notice." Ms Polley encourages all drivers to go to www.AT.govt.NZ before 30 June and scroll over the interactive map to see which roads on usual routes have been affected. "Please be kind, courteous and patient as we all adapt to our new speed limits," she says.

If you forget to slow down, the fines for speed infringements can be costly. The information below is available on the NZTA website and provides a guideline of what to expect. However, demerit points are also given for all speeding infringements (except those recorded by speed camera) and these remain active on your licence for two years after the offence. Drivers who accrue 100 demerit points within a two-year period will have their licence suspended.
