Meet the Auckland Mayoral Candidates
A
ttendees at the CRRA AGM got to know five of the mayoral candidates who are vying for the top job at Auckland Council. For those wanting a steer about who to vote for in October, there was no clear winner on the night but it was a great opportunity to hear from each candidate about their priorities and campaign messages. Below is a brief summary of each speaker. Viv Beck heads up Heart of the City and wants to bring back the buzz to the centre of Auckland. Viv says she will collaborate with council CCOs like Auckland Transport to deliver results for the people of Auckland. Her action plan is divided into five categories and she's interested in there being a night mayor to help grow the city's night-time economy. Viv has worked in start ups and Not For Profits that have given her broad business experience. Craig Lord is an experienced candidate who ran for mayor in 2019 and came third. Craig is an independent candidate who describes himself as being frustrated with the way things are being run and says financial mismanagement is the main pitfall of the current council. His original career as a hydraulic and pneumatic engineer helped him develop problem solving skills.

Gary Brown, chair of the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, says he has a commonsense approach and wants to bring accountability back to Auckland Council. Gary has been in business and worked as a volunteer and fundraiser supporting charities locally and nationally. He says he will make financially prudent decisions with the massive Auckland Council Budget. Effeso Collins is endorsed by Labour and the Greens and is a well-known face from TV. He is an experienced politician and is currently a ward councillor for Manukau. His themes are care, collaboration and courage and he suggests removing the GST on rates which would return $300M to Auckland. He also wants Auckland Transport to come inside council to be managed in house and have two councillors join its board. Leo Molloy is an experienced businessman who worked as a veterinary surgeon for 20 years before moving into the hospitality sector. His themes are choice, chance and change and during the pandemic he funded a kitchen to feed the homeless. Leo highlighted the issues Auckland Council faces having been led by three successive Labour mayors. Although his direct style is bound to challenge

the status quo if he's elected, Leo says he is not a disrupter. All of the candidates said they want to improve Auckland city with most citing the long-term construction in the city centre as having done too much damage for too long. All spoke to varying degrees about CCOs, and shared the view that Auckland Transport is not accountable enough to Aucklanders.
